Joe Biden signs the Respect for Marriage Act, which sounds like something conservatives would make up to support a "traditional marriage" but it actually protects same-sex marriage and interracial marriage. All it took was Joe Biden's entire life for him to come around on gay people!
Okinawa is home to 75% of US military bases in Japan, and there are many Okinawans who have protested against the troops for years for leaving military waste in the country, on top of multiple acts of gendered violence. If there's one country where you shouldn't leave trash, it's Japan.

The NYPD can now involuntarily hospitalize any mentally ill person on the street who appears "unable to take care of themselves". What could possibly go wrong?
2 years ago, NYC launched a $1 million fund for innovative solutions to hate crimes that don't involve the police. The fund was split into many $20k grants, but none of that money has been given out, and no one knows what happened to it. Did someone in NYC cash in a huge Christmas bonus??

This week in Asian America politics!
Lots of nail salon workers in America are Asian, and this week we talk about how their reproductive health is heavily harmed by the chemicals they work with for 8+ hours a day. In NYC, there are new regulations requiring better ventilation starting this year, but for many workers it's too late.
Shein is the Thanos of worker violations. In a new piece by the Cut, journalists cover the intense conditions of Shein workers. Will this be enough to stop Gen Z's love for fast fashion?
BTS' 2-year hiatus. Members of the K-pop boyband have to do South Korea's mandatory military service because.. geopolitics.
Hollywood pioneer Anna May Wong is on the quarter. Is this the U.S. government's way of trying to placate East Asians in America after the last few years of anti-Asian violence?
In NY, the Attorney General Leticia James is calling on a ban on online homicide videos after the shooting in Buffalo, NY earlier in the year. Will this stop all those aspiring shooters on 4chan?

Trump is subpoena'd by the Jan 6th. committee. Elaine Chao finally believes in democracy once rioters take over the capital. Will Trump finally go to prison, or is his plot armor too strong?
U.S. bans all new Huawei devices, proving they can tell Asian (devices) apart.
Seattle cancels plans to expand a 270-bed shelter in Sodo, just south of the Chinatown International District. Will they use this money to build some affordable permanent housing now for Kings County residents?
There's a nation-wide Adderall shortage and the company that makes the most Adderall for America is deep in shady shit.

New episode out now! And maybe one of our best? This week in Asian American politics:
You know what they say, third time's a charm for ending Southeast Asian deportation! There's a new bill introduced by Congress Members in California to end deportations for Southeast Asian refugees who fled to America before 2008… which includes many people who came to America because America destroyed their country.
NY Mag interviews Christina Yuna Lee's Landlord and let's just say we weren't expecting the fight that happened? We share our opinions on Asian Americans and how they view the police and whether they think jails make people better or worse.
NY Mag did some great profiles on Asian immigrant nannies who had to deal with Asian hate at home from their abusive Asian host families in addition to Asian hate happening outside in the city. A masterpiece in illustrating how not all skinfolk are kinfolk.
Seattle's city government proposes a new "mega-shelter" and a light-rail project all in Chinatown, threatening displacement of exiting residents and businesses. If there's one thing to take away from this, it's to stay involved with local politics because city governments will do the most minimal outreach and then acted surprised when you're angry.
New programs to teach Cantonese are popping up all over the US and UK as most programs that exist focus on Mandarin! Maybe it's time to feature a sequel to Shang Chi where he learns the Legend of the Nine Tones. (We also didn't know Cantonese has nine tones).

This week in Asian American politics:
Like a 40 year old dad who tells everyone he played varsity football, Ohio Senate candidates nostalgically cling to the idea of Ohio being a manufacturing state. Despite Ohio having a large nursing industry that makes up most of its economy, these candidates are stoking anti-China flames to bring back manufacturing and get elected, even if this spells Ohio's economic collapse.
Many protests start in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini by Iran's "morality police", and as expected, every cringy US politician comes out of the woodwork.
Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Hae Min Lee, was finally released from prison as prosecutors find new evidence, investigate other suspects, and no longer have enough confidence in their original conviction. Adnan was the subject of the first season of Serial (the podcast), and his case drew national attention to how self-serving attorneys, shady cops, and clunky 1999 technology is a recipe for disaster for accused POC.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. arrives in the US to rekindle things with Biden and is welcomed by large crowds of protesting Filipinos who want him to pay for the war crimes his father did and the money his father stole.

California lawmakers say #ContinueAsianHate and vote to keep the prison-to-ICE deportation pipeline, something that affects many Southeast Asians (see Phoeun You).
SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins takes California back to the 1990s by being "tough on crime." Her team is reviewing past cases to see if hate crime labels can be applied to them retroactively. Will this actually do anything to solve the root issues leading to crime in SF?
Two noncontroversial Anti-Asian Hate bills pass in CA, just not the ones actually actively harming Asian peoples' lives (see ICE deportation issue above)
Kathy Hochul makes masks optional on all public transit in NYC. The only places masks are required now are hospitals and nursing homes. We hate it here!!

Many low-income Asian women live in conservative states where abortion is now illegal, with one of the main states being Texas. Contrary to what Texas says, it's time to mess with Texas so they stop messing with basic rights.

This week we have NYC Council Member Shahana Hanif! Shahana represents District 39, which includes parts of Kensington, Borough Park, Windsor Terrace, Park Slope, Gowanus, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and the Columbia Waterfront. She's also the Co-Chair of the Progressive Caucus and Chair of the Immigration Committee. We ask her questions about working with our NYPD-loving Mayor Eric Adams and how to get him to think about community safety in ways that don't involve more police officers and homeless encampment sweeps. After that, we go into some lightning rounds about other work that Shahana does as a Council Member. Sorry for the shortness of this episode! We were on a very tight schedule and tried to pack as many question as possible in the amount of time we had together for recording. As always, if you like the podcast, please give us a 5 star rating on Spotify or Apple.

This week we talk with Shenuque Tissera! Shenuque (@shenuque) is also a New York City comedian who is from Sri Lanka, and he's here to talk to us about the current economic crisis going on, how Sri Lanka got there, and most importantly, what people can do to support Sri Lankan relief efforts on the ground! Shenuque provided several links, which we are linking right below the blurb. Hope you enjoy the funny yet serious questions we ask this time, and as always, if you want to support us, please give us 5 stars on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, or donate to our Patreon to help us get transcription services for our podcast and Canva Premium at patreon.com/politicallyasian.

Happy podcast birthday!! Politically Asian is officially one year old. Our first episode was last year, April 9th, 2021, so we recorded this episode as an anniversary episode, to reflect on our podcast in a rose, thorn, bud style. We reflect on what we like about the podcast so far, some of our favorite guests, things we didn't like, and some Politically Asian guest episodes and irl events we're looking forward to in the future! If you are reading this right now, especially if you are a white mom who reads Good Housekeeping or a non-Asian listener, please leave us a 5 star review on Apple or Spotify.

This week we talked with two amazing people Vivi Le (she/her) and Kris Chan (he/they) from Chinatown Community for Equitable Development aka CCED! If you haven't heard of CCED before, check them out on their very active Instagram @ccedla. They do amazing work related to tenant organizing, small business organizing, and general organizing against displacement in LA Chinatown. We talk about Asian art gallery gentrifiers pushing out existing Asian residents in LA Chinatown, how to organize across generations and different ethnicities, and how to define success when organizing efforts and wins can take years! Unfortunately, we had some internet issues while recording so this is about 70% of the original audio, which is why Kris disappears towards the end. As always, if you like what we do, go to Politically Asian on Spotify or Apple, and give us 5 stars.

This week, we have Shashank Rao (he/him, @wordsinsankethi) on the pod to discuss Hinduism! Shashank is pursuing a Masters in Divinity at UChicago, where he studies progressive Hinduism frameworks. As East Asians, we aren’t super familiar with more South Asian/Southeast Asian religions and wanted to familiarize ourselves to be inclusive of ALL Asians. Shashank walks us through the basics of Hinduism, the caste system, and how Hindu philosophies can be applied to progressive practices and beliefs. We also serve up some hot takes about Hasan Minhaj, Tik Tok Houses vs. corporate Asian Americans, and tech’s impact on Asian America’s descent into whiteness, and more!

We're back with Season 4! To start things off, we talk with Cookie Duong (she/her, @parisbynightcore on Tik Tok) who is the cofounder of Asian Americans with Republican Parents Support Group on Facebook (10k members), and the Interpreter, an ethnic newsroom that translates English-language articles from credible news outlets into Vietnamese. We talk about the history of the group, why she thinks so many Asian Americans have right-wing parents, and how she put together an impressive 22-slide deck to successfully convince her dad to note vote for Tr*mp in 2020! This is the last episode for Season 3! In this episode, we talk about Asian American data disaggregation happening in New York, Eric Adams' rocky start as Mayor, and some Ivy League racism! We dive into this more in the episode, but just because a professor teaches at an Ivy League and has a resume that is most Asian parents' wet dream does not mean that professor will be progressive and anti-racist. We have some exciting guests for Season 4, some of whom you've definitely heard of if you pay any attention to news related to Asian Americans, so stay tuned! We start by talking about the China Initiative, and how the first person found guilty of being a "Chinese spy" is a WHITE GUY HARVARD PROFESSOR (lmao). We then go into Joe Biden's new AANHPI advisory group (Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander) and how we feel about this roster, which includes Daniel Dae Kim. We wrap it up unpacking how we feel about all these celebrities coming out of nowhere who are making China their whole personality. This week we talk with Jenny G. Zhang about her Identity Fraud piece on Gawker! We're not talking Identity Fraud in the traditional sense (e.g. scamming elderly folks for their SSN), but in a different way involving POC who use race as disingenuous defense when they're called out for doing something bad. Think corrupt Asian landlords who, when called out for being shitty towards their tenants, deflect criticism by saying we're being racist because they are Asian (??). We also talk about white people and POC reactions to Jenny's piece, as well as some of her earlier work. As always, tune in for some fun Hot Take Hot Pots, and please leave us an Apple review!

This week we talk with Kai (@tankiepilled), who is the co-founder of All Power Books (@allpowerbooks), a bookstore and community space for the people! Fun fact for this episode, Kai is actually a pseudonym for our guest because they’ve been arrested at protests, which we thought was cool because it shows they are extremely down for the cause. We talk with Kai about the logistics of starting a bookstore, what community members use All Power’s space, what kind of books the bookstore offers, and more. Tune in to hear what books Kai recommends reading if you wanna dip your toes into learning more about socialism, Karl Marx, etc.!

This week we talk to advertising creative and conceptual artist, Sai He (@replysai)! Sai's worked with many big-name clients like Old Spice, Netflix, Jet Blue, and the New Zealand Transport Agency. He's also the person behind the popular ad industry meme account @dongdraper. We talk to Sai about companies that suddenly became woke with their ads during the George Floyd protests, and whether any of those companies are keeping up with their promises for diversity and equity a year later. We also discuss how Sai got into advertising, whether brands and agencies should even have morals, and some notable ad drama related to social justice movements. This week’s episode was so funny and therapeutic it literally had us in tears. We talk to Kalaya'an (Kala) Mendoza (he/him or they/them), a Queer, Filipino and Hard of Hearing human rights defender, street medic, and community safety & mutual protection trainer. Kala currently serves as the Director of US Programs at Nonviolent Peaceforce. Nonviolent Peaceforce protects civilians in violent conflicts using unarmed protection strategies. We talk to Kala about how to protest safely, protestor safety issues with Stop Asian Hate protests following Atlanta, and what to do in the worst case scenario where white supremacists show up to your protest. Tune in to hear one thing each of us are doing to take care of ourselves while living in the nightmare that is America. The 2020 Census data is out, baby! This week we talked with Julie Kim (@julieaekim), who was the Queens Borough Lead for the NYC Census 2020 and is also the cofounder of the Asian American Feminist Collective (@aafcollective)! We break down how the Census is not just a fun tally of the US population, but a tool that determines how much money is allocated to different states. cities, and counties every decade. Fun (potentially depressing) fact: due to the pandemic, this was the first time the Census went digital. Julie also talks about how she got started with organizing and teaches us the term grass-top organizing!
