Welcome Back to Behind the Service . Today Libby sits down with Rohini Bagrodia to discuss her work at Columbia University with the Family Flex Study which aims to capture the resiliency within families as they have traversed difficult times, as well as better understand the needs and struggles of families across the U.S. They will also pay specific attention to the unique needs of our veteran families, recognizing that there is often a lack of resources for the larger family unit post-military separation.

Rohini is a PhD candidate in clinical psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research interests focus on exploring emotion regulation patterns in children and between different family members as indicators of overall adjustment following stressful life events. While not a veteran herself, Rohini has worked in veteran mental health for the past years, motivated by the unique mental health needs of veterans and continually inspired by the phenomenal resiliency seen every day.
During the height of the pandemic, Rohini, Ann-Christin Haag, and Dr. George Bonanno, developed the Family Flexibility Study, with the goal to understand how families, especially veteran families, were managing this unprecedented time. In her initial conversations with families, Rohini became all too aware of the lack of resources for veteran spouses and children post-military separation. Recognizing that just under half of current servicemen/women are parents and will ultimately separate from the military potentially looking for support, she turned her attention to better understand how the veteran experience and pivotal events thus far. She hopes her research will ultimately inform policy and connect to families to effective resources they need and deserve.

Alyssa is a Licensed Professional Counselor turned entrepreneur after creating the Physio-Life Transformation Program, which shows high achieving professionals how to “unstuck” themselves from the hold of anxiety and walk them through how to build a life that is aligned with their values, purpose and goals.

Serving in the mental health field for 7 years, Alyssa noticed patterns across different clients whose stories and pain points varied from one another, but all led back to the same underlying causes. This broken foundation kept them in the same self-sabotaging patterns, showing up to therapy each week with little improvement to show for it. Alyssa believes that although talk therapy is helpful and healing in its own right, transformational healing that goes from survive to thrive happens beyond 50-minute sessions.

Alyssa believes that facilitating change begins with a positive support system as well as aligning the body, mind, and spirit; focusing on the mind-body connection and healing the nervous system.

Alyssa helps exhausted and disconnected high achieving individuals remove toxic relationships, crushed self-worth, exhaustion and burnout from their lives and teach them how to overcome uncontrollable overwhelm and anxiety so that they are empowered, decisive and in control of their lives. Alyssa helps them do this without having to rely on medications, supplements, doctor visits and what can often be years of fruitless therapy sessions.

If you are interested in learning more about the work Alyssa does email her at alyssa.thechangeco@gmail.com or visit her website to sign up for a coaching session.

Welcome back to Behind the Service podcast. Today Libby sits down with the author of the book, Attributes of Manhood: Stones That Build The Foundation To Weather Any Storm, Mitch Anderson who is starting a movement aimed at igniting and inspiring men to re-assume their rightful place in society. One not of tyranny, but of servitude so that our culture can once again hold men accountable to their original design!

This book aims to invite men to wrestle with five key attributes pulled from the Word of God pertinent for men to assume their rightful place once again in society and, more importantly, in the home. We need to unlock the strength hidden deep within men because the weight of the world is far too great for women, or children, to carry alone. For men to accomplish their original design, we need the Spirit of God to empower us and contend for us. I hope this book inspires the men of this generation to unleash the power of Jesus Christ in their lives to overcome their basest urges and give glory back to their Designer.

In 2010, the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, now known as the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence, launched the Caregiver and Family Member Study. This 15-Year Longitudinal TBI Study, led by TBICoE researchers at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence
Opens to the homepage of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence in Bethesda, Maryland is a congressionally mandated study that examines the effects of TBI incurred by service members. The specific focus of the study is on those who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom, and how those effects impact family members.

The Caregiver and Family Member Study aims to better understand the impact of the service member’s or veteran’s TBI on their family.

Now in its eleventh year, the Caregiver and Family Member Study has found that the time commitment and burden of caregiving is correlated with physical and psychological distress, poor sleep and disrupted family life. Frequently, caregivers balance their commitments toward their service member or veteran with childcare and other work duties, often receiving no help and having little time for themselves.

Caregivers also have unmet health care and care provision needs. These unmet needs can evolve to worse caregiver health and well-being.

Jessica Manfre is a licensed social worker, author, and Chief Financial Officer of the nonprofit, Inspire Up. She holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Central Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Northwestern State University. Jessica is the proud wife of a U.S. Coast Guardsman, Scott, and mama to their two children, Anthony and Raegan. When she isn’t working or with her family, you can find her drinking too much coffee with her nose buried in a book.

Faraway lands, fear, and faith—Ruth paves the way for our story.

One day when author and military spouse Jessica Manfre was reading the book of Ruth, she had an epiphany. Ruth is the story of every military spouse.

In the book of Ruth, we witness a woman’s brave journey—one of loss, loneliness, and loyalty. A story of love and faith. Does that sound familiar? These are the hallmarks of the military life. While our lives are fraught with heartache and sacrifice, that isn’t the whole of our stories. Ruth is a hero that has gone before us, offering encouragement and strength. Through her, we witness the beauty of hope and share in the healing power of friendship. We discover that even when all seems lost and completely hopeless, we are Never Alone. God is always with us. And He’s leading us through our own story of redemption. He’s restoring the hardships and healing the wounds of despair. He’s transforming our pain and building our trust. Even when we’re wandering in a faraway, foreign land, He is not lost and has not lost us.

Join Jessica in studying a story that was meant for you. Jessica explores topics like the fundamental need for connection, the clinical mental health implications of loneliness, preparing your heart for loss (she writes from experience), friendship, and much more. This resource is for every military spouse who desires to strengthen relationships, live in authentic community, and walk with God.

Never Alone: Ruth, the Modern Military Spouse, and the God Who Goes With Us available for preorder.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 New Living Translation
"A spiritual gift is given to each of us so that we can help each other to one person. The spirit gives the ability to give wise advice. The same spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same spirit gives great faith to another and to someone else. the one spirit gives the gift to healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles. Another the ability to prophesize. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the spirit of God or from another spirit. Another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages while another is given the ability, to interpret what has been said. It is the one and only spirit who distributes all of these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have"

Philippians 4:13 New Living Translation
"I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength'.

In this crossover episode, Libby Bates talks with Dr. Paula Schnurr, executive director for the National Center for PTSD about the difference between prolonged exposure therapy versus cognitive behavioral therapy for veterans with PTSD. Prolonged exposure therapy focuses on helping a person get control over their traumatic memories to break the cycle. Whereas cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the thoughts of guilt and shame that often accompany the traumatic experience.

This is a crossover podcast from Coming Home Well on the journey of caregiving.

Who are we when we are forced to face the inexplicable? What memories ground our lives? What are the events that define us? How do our experiences impact our lives?

In this episode, Tyler talks with Joy Carlson, author and teacher, about her journey caring for her son, Kevin Ash after his debilitating accident on the rugby field in her book, Faith Alone ~ A Mother and Son Story of Hope and Love. Kevin was part of the military for 10 years and had multiple deployments. Upon his return, Joy watched as her son's physical and mental health began to deteriorate, completely unaware of the degenerating disease that was destroying his brain.

Listen in to Joy's story and how she turned her pain into writing her story so others will feel they are not alone.

In this episode, Libby chats with Dr. Michael Mithoefer about MDMA Assisted Therapy for PTSD. Dr. Mithoefer is the Senior Medical Director for Medical Affairs, Training and Supervision for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Dr. Mithoefer covers his background and what inspired his passion to help the veteran community heal from PTSD and trauma.

Dr. Mithoefer describes the process of participating in a MDMA Assisted Therapy Trial and how the use of MDMA decreases fear and defensiveness to enable the desire to discuss the trauma. Several participants have expressed the inability to move forward or process the trauma clearly, however, after several sessions they have been able to evolve within a safe, controlled environment. Creating a new perspective!

MDMA Assisted Therapy is currently in its third stage of clinical trials. Follow the research at maps.org/mdma/ptsd . Follow on MAPS news on Instagram @mapsnews

Bio for Dr. Michael Mithoefer
Michael Mithoefer, M.D., is a psychiatrist living in Asheville, NC, with a research office in Charleston, SC. In 2000, he began collaborating with MAPS on the first U.S. Phase 2 clinical trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. He and his wife Annie have since conducted two of the six MAPS-sponsored Phase 2 clinical trials testing MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD, as well a study providing MDMA-assisted sessions for therapists who have completed the MAPS-sponsored MDMA Therapy Training Program, and a pilot study treating couples with MDMA-assisted psychotherapy combined with Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy. He is now Senior Medical Director for Medical Affairs, Training and Supervision at MAPS Public Benefit Corporation (MAPS PBC). He is a Grof-certified Holotropic Breathwork Facilitator, is trained in EMDR and Internal Family Systems Therapy, and has nearly 30 years of experience treating trauma patients. Before going into psychiatry in 1991, he practiced emergency medicine for ten years, served as medical director of the Charleston County and Georgetown County Emergency Departments, and has held clinical faculty positions at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has been board-certified in Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, and Internal Medicine.

Welcome to Behind the Service hosted by Libby Bates as she sits down with Dr Dan Perl from Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.
Dr. Perl was the primary investigator on the study of CTE in the brains of military personnel that was published June 9, 2022 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
We had some caregivers with questions regarding the study and the best way to answer those questions was to chat with Dr Perl to gain some more clarity for everyone.

Welcome to another episode of Behind the Service with your host Jolynn Lee.

"So often our service members come home, and they withdraw. When these events happen in our world, they can pull back and they can withdraw because it reminds them of experiences that others just don't understand unless they've been. And it's easier to pull back and withdraw into isolation than it is to try and communicate to those around them. What is going on internally and how those events make them feel, even if they're not directly connected to those events, there is an emotional and a mental impact". ~~~Jolynn Lee

Welcome to another episode of Behind the Service hosted by Jolynn Lee.
Today we're going to lean into the conversation.: Tensions abroad equals tension at home.

When events escalate overseas, it impacts us here on the home front, whether you are active service or you are a veteran, you're military affiliated or connected. When things happen abroad. It creates a tension at home and a lot of times, it's so subtle that we don't even realize that it's happening. The withdraw in Afghanistan and then the invasion in Ukraine there has been an escalation in military mental health overall.

Welcome to our Caregiver Coaching Corner @behindtheservicepodcast ! We're on part 6 of our book club series where Jen discusses the book written by Brene Brown called Atlas of the Heart. This book shows us how accurately naming an experience doesn't give the experience more power. It gives us the power of understanding, meaning, and choice. This week we are talking about places we go when things aren't what they seem. We are talking about the emotion bittersweet this week on the caregiver's coaching corner.

On this episode of the Nutrition Minute, we're going to talk a little bit about why dieting doesn't work. We've all done it, right? We've jumped into whatever recent fat diet is working for, You know, whatever celebrity, Instagram, influencer, friend of a friend's brother, sister. We've all done it, or we've purchased the diet foods that big diet companies push on us to give us quote more energy with less calories. And we've all fallen victim to it. These diets or foods work for a small amount of time.
Right? We lose a little bit of weight, just enough to tell your friends about your recent dietary success and just enough to pay money into whatever company, whatever, diet trend, cookbook, whatever, uh, energy snack bar that diet company is selling.

Welcome to Peace After Combat with your hosts: clinical psychologists, Air Force Veterans, AUTHORS, and spouses to veterans, Dr Tiffany Tajiri and Dr. Kristina Seymour. Learn about the connection between faith, spirituality and psychology and how to find peace after painful LIFE experiences. Real Truths, through Real Talk about Real Life. Now here are your hosts, Dr. Tiffany Tajiri and Dr. Kristina Seymour.

In the first episode of Peace After Combat, Libby Bates over at Behind the Service sits down with Dr Tiffany to speak to her about her book, Peace After Combat, Healing the Spiritual & Psychological Wounds of War.

Dr. Tiffany Tajiri takes a hard look at the psychological trauma experienced by veterans and their loved ones and offers insight and hope for better lives.

It could be your neighbor, your coworker, your son, or the woman sitting next to you in church. When combat veterans return from war, they’re often confused. They struggle to reconnect with their families; the cheering crowds and smothering hugs make them want to jump out of their skin, and sometimes they even long to return to the hell of deployment.

What they’ve experienced in combat can radically change how they view themselves, others, and the world at large. They may have never seen so much hurt, suffering, death, and destruction, which leaves them questioning, “Where is God?”

Many caregivers often ask themselves...Who am I?
It starts with the foundation of who am I in Christ? What is your spiritual identity? That is the foundation of who we are as individuals. And you have to know first what your spiritual identity is because that's what you're anchored to and that's what keeps you moving forward. Once you know what that spiritual foundation is, then you need to look inside of you at the heart.

Welcome to our Caregiver Coaching Corner! Jen will be starting a new book club series for the next 13 weeks on the book written by Brene Brown called Atlas of the Heart.

A little bit from the introduction of the book she talks about how 15 years ago when we first introduced a curriculum based on her shame research. they asked participants in training workshops to list all of the emotions that they could recognize and name as they were experiencing them. And she goes on to say that over the course of five years, they collected those surveys for more than 7,000 people. The average number of emotions that was named across the survey was three, three emotions.

When we don't have the language to talk about what we're experiencing, our ability to make sense of what's happening and share it with others is a very or severely limited. Without accurate language, we struggled to get the help we need. We don't always regulate or manage our emotions and experiences in a way that allows us to move through them productively and our self-awareness is diminished. Language shows us that naming an experience doesn't give the experience more power, it gives us the power of understanding and meaning.

When four Green Berets were killed in an ambush in Niger in 2017, the media and the American public largely focused on President Trump’s ham-fisted condolence call to one of the widows. But for Michelle Black, whose husband Bryan was one of the men killed in the attack, this shattering ordeal was made indescribably worse by vague and conflicting reports from the Army about what happened that night along the Niger-Mali border. Suddenly a widow struggling to raise two sons alone, Black was determined to discover the facts about how and why her husband and his comrades died.
In her unvarnished and honest memoir, SACRIFICE: A Gold Star Widow’s Fight for the Truth (G.P. Putnam’s Sons; May 2021), Michelle Black combines a heartfelt narrative of her family’s journey to overcome grief with a meticulously-researched and uncompromising account of the circumstances behind Bryan’s and his fellow soldiers’ deaths. Interviewing many of the mission’s survivors and relentlessly questioning the inconsistencies in the official Army reports, Black probed into the half-truths and outright lies fed to her and the other fallen heroes’ families. This obfuscation, she would come to believe, was a calculated effort to protect those higher up the chain of command.

On this episode of our caregiving coaching corner, we're continuing our series on influencers and how they impact our wellbeing. Social influencers are related to the people who are around you. So, while the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical areas were more internally focused, the social influencers are more externally focused. Now people's social needs and desires vary greatly. So, from a social perspective, your engagement is enhanced when you have the right amount and type of interaction that's best for you.

Jen is back for part two in our series on emotional influencers in another episode of our Caregivers Coaching Corner. Last week Jen left you with the opportunity to think about a time in which you experienced one of the flags: fear, love, anger, guilt, or sadness, and then consider or think about what those emotions were trying to tell you. So now we're going to continue moving forward. We're going to talk a little bit about emotional expression or expressing your emotions in part two of emotional influencers.

“The shame response is an unavoidable, emotional reflex, universally experienced and intensified with the use of digital communication and social media.”⁣

In other words, Shawn discovered we have an autonomic shame response that is involuntarily activated when we have human interaction and communication via non-human devices. ⁣

Our brain doesn’t get it and bugs out big time! ⁣

This is a subconscious process and occurs 25x’s faster than our conscious thinking brain! Before we even notice, our brain sounds the alarm, “pull back! Social danger!” ⁣

This is where we get stuck! Nervous system says pull back, but needs us to move toward real time, face to face, social engagement to repair the shame response. ⁣

We don’t understand what the problem is or where the enemy is located, and this subconsciously drives us to to spend on social media searching for the danger by comparing and competing to no avail. We then shame, blame and stigmatize our response. ⁣

This is not a conscious process and it’s not your fault. It’s what your body will do when confronted with communication on metal. ⁣

In today's episode Dr Shawn discusses the difference between guilt & shame, the importance of separating our behaviors & circumstances from our identity, the difference between toxic shame and healthy shame, the difference between shaming and describing, and the role digital communication has on our autonomic shame responses.

On today's episode of A Joyful Life with Jennifer, we're in the midst of another caregiver coaching series that Jen is doing on influencers. They are the factors that can either work for you or against you in terms of your overall wellness. Mental influencers are really just another way of talking about how your brain functions or your brain power, if you will.

If you think of your body as like a computer, then your consciousness is the computer programmer. The reason that you think the way that you do in your brain is the hardware, which is like the processing part of the computer and your mental factors that influence energy and thus your wellbeing and involve those things that allow you to be present in the moment, to be alert, focused, and clear, which really allows you to harness your mental capacities for decision-making and overall wellbeing.

Grab a cup of coffee, tea or a tall glass of water and settle in for another Caregiver Coaching Corner. On today's episode, we're in the midst of another series that Jen is doing on influencers, which are the factors that can either work for you or against you in terms of your overall wellness.

And so far, we've talked about physical and environmental influencers so if you didn't listen to them, please go back and have a listen. Today we're going to be talking about spiritual influencers and spiritual influencers are things that involve your purpose, your beliefs, values, desires, goals that are in relation to what you specifically want to do and how you want to do it.

Spiritual influencers can detract from your energy when whatever you're doing, causes you to question or comes into conflict with the above. Sometimes people confuse spiritual with religious. And to make sure that we're all on the same page here: spiritual is simply a word that describes the immeasurable items that influence your behavior and your energy.

On our second part of our energy influencer series, today Jen will discuss physical energy influencers. Physical influencers really involve the awareness that you have about what your body is telling you and how proactive you are in taking care of your physical self.

These influencers really create physical wellbeing, and we all know that when you are feeling physically strong, physically active, you really have the best chance of experiencing the energy you need to complete all of the things that are important. When your body's not able to function optimally or in the manner to which you might be used to, then your energy is going to be depleted.

Mac Parkman loved sports, video games and hanging out with his friends. Growing up he wrestled, and played football and suffered numerous concussions. Unknown to his loved ones he struggled with depression. He took his life at 17. The Parkman family donated his brain to VA-BU-CLF brain bank to honor his memory and accelerate brain trauma research.

The Mac Parkman Foundation for Adolescent Concussive Trauma Vision: To create a centralized community of trust for parents, coaches, athletic trainers, and athletes to learn about the risks of concussive related trauma for our youth, particularly focusing on the risks of multiple concussions, sub-concussive trauma and long-term management and identification of issues including physical pain/trauma, depression, and other related mental health issues.

Our Mission: To serve as a source of information, resources, and communications to the community of parents, coaches/Athletic trainers, medical staff, and athletes that are affected by sports-related concussions and to raise awareness of the long-term implications of concussive and sub-concussive trauma to our children to include physical pain and emotional/mental health issues such as depression, personality disorders, and other mental health issues. We will support this mission through collaboration with other sports, medical, educational, and military organizations, advertising, fundraising, and communications.

Steve’s paintings are included in the Pentagon, the Women in Military Service for America Museum at Arlington National Cemetery, the Naval War College Museum and the National Museum of the Marine Corps. His work has been exhibited by fine art galleries across the U.S. as well. A beautiful coffee table book featuring photographs of the portraits and biographical vignettes will accompany the portrait series.
The stories highlight the women’s experiences during their military careers including challenges and successes. The women also share the mantras they live by and who inspired them along their journey. On the first episode of The Military Spouse Perspective, Becca sits down with the founders of an amazing organization dedicating their service to raise awareness of suicide in our military family community.

The Ohana Homefront Foundation was founded in 2021 by two friends, Sarah Otto and Natalie Ealy. Sarah and Natalie share the same passion for suicide awareness and prevention within the military community. "Suicide in our military community is an issue, especially for the families, yet it is not spoken about at the same level as active duties and veterans." OHF's mission is to support the ENTIRE military community when it comes to suicide awareness, by bringing the talk of suicide to the front for the military community as a whole and to offer support to those holding down the homefront.

Aaron Quinonez (Sgt Q) endured a rough upbringing before becoming a proud Marine right out of high school. He was trained to fight the enemy and was prepared for war. When he volunteered for a combat tour in Iraq, little did he know his real battle would be fought in his mind.
After eight years of military service, Sgt Q suffered from depression, anger, and panic attacks and was diagnosed with PTSD. He nearly ended his own life in the parking lot of a church, where later he was redeemed by Jesus Christ, who gave him a new life.

Sgt Q traded the battlefield for the mission field and found healing and purpose through building homes and churches, feeding children, and supplying precious hope to struggling communities worldwide. God then called him to form QMissions, a pathway for veterans—Sgt Q’s fellow warfighters—to replace the battle scars of their minds with the joy of serving.

Now, Sgt Q is the award-winning author of Healing Thru Service

**originally aimed at struggling veterans, which also offers help for anyone in crisis and may be one's ticket to a more fulfilled life. He went from being homeless and on the brink of suicide to starting the multi-million dollar company with over 100 employees, Reliable Commercial Cleaning, founding the veteran non-profit, Q Missions, and the health-tech startup, Q Actual 2.0.

“FROM PATIENT TO PH.D: AFTER SUFFERING A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY, I HAVE DEDICATED MY LIFE TO EXPLORING THERAPEUTIC OPTIONS THAT RESTORE NEUROLOGICAL FUNCTION AND PROVIDE NEURONAL PROTECTION.”

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) affect 100 million of people around the world annually and contribute to other neurological disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Military service members are particularly at risk for TBI.

Jayme joined the Army following high school, serving as an airborne combat medic and while deployed to Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne in late 2009, he witnessed and treated numerous TBI even becoming a victim of one himself. Those experiences motivated James to go from patient to Ph.D.—becoming the catalyst that led him to the field of neuroscience and the foundation of his education, his research and his volunteer work.

Following medical retirement in 2012, Jayme attended Western Michigan University where he received his B.S. in biology and chemistry minor with concentration in neuroscience. As an undergraduate he began his scientific career investigating therapeutic candidates following trauma to the central nervous system, publishing a first-author paper identifying neuronal protection in the adult zebrafish following damage.

Jayme is currently a 5th yr Ph.D. candidate at the University of Notre Dame under the guidance of Dr. David Hyde, where he has developed a novel blunt-force TBI model in regenerative zebrafish allowing for the examination of both the injury and the regenerative recovery. His work has been nationally recognized by the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Department of Defense, and Pat Tillman Foundation. He has identified injury-induced activated regeneration, the originating regenerative source, and replacement of lost and damaged brain tissue. He aims to further understand the complex gene regulation providing a potential neuroprotective and regenerative therapeutic to at-risk populations such as service members.

Our fourth & final episode in our inner block series, Jen discusses GREMLINS.
Gremlins are the most, highly personal and most intense emotionally, of any of the energy blocks that we've talked about so far. If you imagine what a gremlin looks like, and if you've ever seen the movie gremlins, then that might be similar to what's popping in your mind, but gremlins are usually, or are not ever very nice.

Gremlins lie in each and every one of us. And they are that voice in your head. That's whispering in your ear. Maybe even sometimes shouting in your ear, things like you, shouldn't try not to take risks. Wanting you to take the safe road and really just play your life small. If you will, often times the message that the gremlin is.

Saying to you is something along the lines of you're just not good enough. And gremlins are really personal and very emotionally charged when your gremlin, when our gremlin speaks, it's really difficult not to listen. And oftentimes when you do listen or when we do listen, We won't even try something because our gremlin has told us and convinced us that we're going to fail.

If you've been tuning in the last few weeks, you will know that we are right in the middle of a series. That's talking about inner energy blocks and these blocks have a really big influence on our wellbeing. This week Jen talks about assumptions.

Assumptions are a belief that, because something happened in the past, it's going to happen again. Right.? We've all made assumptions. We all make assumptions, whether we're super proud to admit it or not.

The main question to ask yourself when challenging an assumption is simply just because it happened in the past. Why does it have to happen again? Or why must it happen again?

We are joined by Shawn Moore, founder of Caregivers on the Homefront to discuss the prevalence of suicidality in our veteran caregivers and what we can do to support our caregivers.
Caregivers on the Homefront. serving the families who care for the warriors of all military eras and first responders. (caregivers-homefront.org)

Phenotypes of caregiver distress in military and veteran caregivers: Suicidal ideation associations (plos.org)

PER RESEARCH ARTICLE: This study’s findings identify a public health concern and a call to action. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the US and suicide among veterans is already a public health problem. This study also identifies significant suicide risk for military caregivers. Presently, there are no registries or efforts in monitoring suicide among military families. Military caregivers of the latest era of war are younger, in the prime of their adult life, not yet at the age of retirement, and not yet at the age when a caregiver role is assumed, which typically occurs at the age of retirement. As a result, the emotional, physical, and social toll of caregiving in this group of younger caregivers may last for decades. A healthy and productive life while being a caregiver may require significant support from programs and policies that can strengthen the health and well-being of caregivers, with an emphasis on career progression. To date few programs are addressing suicide in military and veteran caregivers. This study sheds light on some of the factors and caregiver characteristics associated with suicidal ideation, a contribution we hope can be incorporated in future prevention initiatives. This study suggests that education interruption, loss of self, and the stress of caregiving are important contributors that warrant further evaluation.

We're continuing our series on inner blocks more specifically the four types. In this episode, Jen discusses interpretations. What are interpretations? a judgment or an opinion that you create about something that happens. It might be about an event or a person, perhaps an experience and you believe it to be true. The interesting thing about interpretations, is that more often than not whether it's consciously or not? You continue to develop that story by either overthinking it or continuing to search for more evidence to support your interpretation, which ultimately really just adds fuel to the fire.

Before we jump into the energy block we're going to be talking about today, energy blocks, no matter if they're inner or outer or what type of inner energy block they are, they limit your potential. They can limit your wellbeing. Oftentimes you don't even see all of the choices that you have.

In Jens series on energy, she talks about energy, the different types of energy, anabolic and catabolic, as well as the seven levels of energy. She talked about the self energetic perception chart. She talked about what each of the levels look like as well as what thoughts, feelings, and actions results from each of those levels.
Today we're going to spend a little bit of time putting it into perspective or painting a picture, a realistic picture, if you will, of what each of the levels look like.

NEW Monday Caregiver Coaching Corner

🎙 NEW RELEASES COMING YOUR WAY!
EVERY MONDAY MORNING! @behindtheservicepodcast

🎙 Stay tuned in! We have some new and exciting episodes about to drop! As we grow as a podcast and organization, we wanted to be able to provide caregivers more tools for their toolbox.

🎙 In addition to our regularly scheduled Wednesday episodes, we are adding a Saturday morning Caregiver Spotlight which will be focused on the stories of many of our amazing veteran caregivers across this nation assisting and taking care of our wounded service members.

🎙 As caregivers, we each need to focus on our own well-being to avoid burn out. If you ask most caregivers that just doesn’t happen regularly, so having a coaching segment dedicated directly to that will provide a space for caregivers to utilize these tools for their own mental health and well-being.

🎙 That’s why we’re so excited for this new coaching segment on Monday mornings featuring @jenniferballouwellness.

🎙 Jennifer Ballou is a 21 yr Army veteran, Gold Star Spouse, speaker, yoga teacher and a well-being and wellness coach. Each episode will focus on mastering your well-being and your life through coaching on ways to reduce your stress and increase your energy!

🎙 Tune in this Monday Aug 2 for the very first segment “catabolic vs anabolic energy” in a series that is sure to help you tune into the various energies we experience throughout our day so we can each become better versions of ourselves and be able to navigate the various issues we face as a caregiver.

Micah set out on this journey to find a healthy lifestyle balanced with cannabis and fitness. What he found out at 39, was that not only could the two work together, but he could strive with this “Training Through Terps” program.

There are many benefits including post-workout pain management, reduction in inflammation, as well as, being able to control hunger spikes with humulene, and getting premium sleep when he wants it and not when his anxiety wants to let him. Working out at home, with minimal equipment, using a selective eating program, as well as cannabis, has given Micha a lot of the benefits you wouldn't expect from this wonderful plant.

Amid the opioid and suicide epidemics, military veterans across the country are shunning prescription medications in favor of cannabis.
In his first feature-length documentary, producer, director, and military veteran Steve Ellmore chronicles the lives of fellow veterans, spouses, and family members coping with war-related trauma and the loss of loved ones to suicide brought on by the over-prescription of pharmaceuticals.

STEVE ELLMORE, Director, Producer
Steve Ellmore is an American filmmaker,
photojournalist, and veterans’ activist. His
experience behind the lens dates back to the
1980s with his first 35mm camera. From there
he migrated to TV and audio production
before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1992. After
retiring from the military in 2012, he picked up
the camera again as a freelance
photographer.
His venture into activism and filmmaking
began with the American Taxpayer Relief Act
of 2012 and production on the film, Allegiance
to the Same, a project he conceived to
challenge the government’s plans to cut
veteran benefits.
In 2017 he began work on his next big project,
a documentary about veterans starting a
marijuana grow in the Midwest. The original idea was scrapped due to budgetary constraints, but not before convincing Ellmore of the effectiveness of treating PTSD with cannabis. Initially a skeptic, his research into the therapeutic benefits of the plant convinced him there’s a story that needs to be told. He immediately began production on the documentary Unprescribed, establishing Allegiance Films LLC in the process.
Ellmore is a Southern California native who now resides in Maryland. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland University College and his master’s from Johns Hopkins University, both in communications.

Every so often, military police get training that enables them to be attached to units conducting missions well outside the purview of a standard military police soldier. For those soldiers, their story goes largely untold. Whether due to the incredulity of the story, or because some stories are hard to talk about. The events in this book are told exactly as they happened. Some have been modified due to security concerns and for the privacy of comrades. Ghosts of the Valley gives a full spectrum recount of the incidents that took place in Afghanistan, and the recovery process that became necessary upon return to the peace of home. The book itself will hopefully serve as a benefit to soldiers who have not yet deployed, civilians who struggle to understand the average combat veteran, and the soldiers who have redeployed that still struggle in their recovery process. The book is not meant to glorify war, but to expose the horrors of it. Ghosts of the Valley also provides a comprehensive, and up-to-date as of the publication, list of resources for those struggling with PTSD, or those who simply need help.

Boone Cutler is an author, columnist, music video director and Warfighter Rights leader that has become the first nationally recognized radio talk show personality who is also a combat veteran from the current war.He began writing his Iraq War inspired novel "Voodoo in Sadr City" during his combat tour in Iraq and later completed it during his two-year recovery from wartime injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, during the Neglect Scandal of 2007.After his recovery Boone began to see a major void in the Warfighter community and decided to approach Fox News affiliate 99.1 FM Talk with the concept of a new show that focused on national, international and social events based on the Warfighter's perspective. In 2011, his show "Tipping Point with Boone Cutler" began and gave him a weekly stage for his raw Paratrooper, no-holds-barred style, quickly becoming a hit over the air waves and online with curious mainstream American listeners, and his fellow Warfighters. In June 2014, "Tipping Point with Boone Cutler" began its partnership with KNEWS 107.3 FM in Reno, NV where it can be heard every Saturday. In 2010, Boone founded the National Warfighter Symposium to bring much needed attention to Warfighter issues such as post combat life changes and especially the alarming Warfighter suicide and homelessness rates.America currently loses at least 23 Warfighters (22 veterans + 1 active duty) to suicide every single day. This is a number that Boone has made his mission to combat by his creation of "The Spartan Pledge" for fellow Warfighters to who promise not to take their own lives and instead vow to find a new mission to help one another. He has chosen GallantFew.org, founded by Ranger Karl Monger as his signature charityIn 2012, Boone was diagnosed with Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease secondary to a blast-injury in Iraq and is currently starting to campaign for more awareness on the issue of degenerative brain disease in the Warfighter Community.Governor Sandoval of Nevada appointed Boone to the Inter-agency Council on Veteran Affairs for the 2012/2013 term working with the council helping establish the objectives of The Green Zone Initiative based on the needs of Nevada's veterans. Boone believes in healing through the Art's and has remained periodically involved over the years helping to develop the Warfighter Community message as music video producer / director for REDCON-1 MUSIC GROUP after seeing first-hand the healing effects of music therapy. In 2014, Boone became the national spokesperson for the Warfighter Rights' Movement whose mission is to end Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder phobia that results in discrimination against Warfighters in employment, housing and the judicial process.Additional Elements:https://www.veteranscrisisline.net/ https://youtu.be/2_rP1gHpots http://boonecutler.com/ https://www.amazon.com/FPL-Boone-Cutler-Protocols/dp/B08HGRZNSQ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=SX2B9AAXWPUB&dchild=1&keywords=boone+cutler&qid=1602697662&sprefix=boone+%2Caps%2C161&sr=8-1

Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush. Today we’re talking about Expectations VS Reality. How many of us have these preconceived notions about life? As children we have a wide expanse of dreams regarding how we imagine life to be when we grow up. Dreams of meeting our perfect spouse, having a family, excelling in our careers, traveling the world, doing all the things we see in the movies. But what happens when that picture perfect scene is shattered by war, trauma, infidelity, and heartache...The reality is WAR changes a person. TRAUMA changes a person. LIFE changes a person. How does one work to reconcile between our preconceived expectations & our present realities? I’ve heard it discussed like this... Unmet expectations are premeditated resentments. All information is based on real life experiences. We are speaking from a place of love and nothing we say should ever be in place of professional counseling or reaching out to your doctor.
