Roman, Jake, and Brent begin this episode by briefly discussing which moment in sports each would change if they could. They then get into the altercation that occurred between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole. Roman and Brent think it’s a slight concern that shouldn’t matter too much in the long run, while Jake is much more critical of Green and the situation as a whole. The guys then dive into college football, discussing CFB playoff sleepers, the best Group of 5 teams, and the games of the week. They take a similar approach to the NFL, debating on the most surprising team, the most underwhelming team, the favorites in both the NFC and AFC, and the games of the week for Week 6. Roman, Jake, and Brent begin this episode with another funny question: What would you do if a dead body dropped out of a casket? The sports talk then begins with the guys’ thoughts on week five of college football. They discuss the best game of the week, what’s wrong with Oklahoma, and the most slept-on undefeated team. They also, of course, have the give their two cents on Memphis (Roman and Jake) and Penn State (Brent). The guys then get into the result of Memphis Basketball’s IARP case. Memphis received a light punishment from the IARP, avoiding a postseason ban and a Penny Hardaway suspension. While they all agree that this is a more than favorable outcome for Memphis, Roman argues that this isn’t vindication for the school and that it was still unwise to defy the NCAA. Next is a discussion on the Tua injury. The guys all come to a consensus that the Dolphins’ organization deserves most of the blame, but do have some disagreements as to who else may be at fault. The episode ends with a preview of NFL Week 4 and a recap of everyone’s weeks. Enjoy the 21st episode of the Men in Hoodies Podcast! Roman, Jake, and Brent begin this episode by each telling one thing about themselves that the listeners may not know. The sports talk then begins with a recap of College Football Week 4. The guys talk about the best (almost) upsets, most surprising undefeated teams, and whether or not Clemson is legit. Later on, Roman and Jake rant about the struggles of Memphis Football and Brent lightens the mood afterwards with the optimistic start for Penn State. Next is a discussion on the recent one year suspension for Celtics coach, Ime Udoka. The guys all view this as a bad situation overall with lots of questions that have yet to be answered. They then preview week three of the NFL, discussing if the Giants have been overhyped, what’s next for the 49ers with Jimmy Garoppolo, the players with the biggest question marks, and what are the best games of the week. The guys then moved onto a quick discussion on Suns owner Robert Sarver. They all agree that his actions and comments are unacceptable and have no place in professional basketball. Roman highlights Memphis’ failure against Mississippi State, Brent discusses Penn State’s nail-biting win over Purdue and the craziness that was UNC vs App State, and Jake recounts Florida State’s dramatic victory over LSU and his experience in Starkville for Memphis-Mississippi State. The guys then give their predictions for the Heisman Trophy. Roman and Brent believe that the story of USC’s resurgence will be enough to get Caleb Williams over the edge, while Jake thinks that Ohio State’s dominance will lead CJ Stroud to the award. Afterwards, they all give their hypothetical 12 team college football playoff brackets and predictions. Roman, Jake, and Brent begin this episode by discussing what their biggest fears are. Afterwards, they dive into the story of Manti Te’o. Roman, having watched the documentary on Netflix, recounts the infamous catfishing scandal that took place nearly a decade ago. He summarizes what went down and how it ultimately effected Te’o’s career. Jake and Brent, having not watched the documentary, are instantly intrigued and make a point to further study Te’o’s story and career. The guys then react to Deshaun Watson’s finalized suspension. Brent is mostly indifferent, Jake praises the NFL for taking action, and Roman remains unsatisfied with the suspension. The conversation moves to Memphis’ offering of Bronny James. Roman and Jake are weary of Memphis pursuing Bronny and point out the risk, while Brent brings up the potential benefits of bringing in James. Next is their NFL playoff predictions. While they all have Buffalo representing the AFC in the Super Bowl, each has a different NFC Champion. Roman thinks that Trey Lance will propel San Francisco to their 3rd Super Bowl appearance in 10 years, Brent thinks that the Vikings finally get over the hump after years of disappointment and underachieving, and Jake has Tom Brady and the Bucs making it back in what could be Brady’s last run. Roman, Jake, and Brent begin this episode a little different by discussing what pet peeves irk at them the most. After that, they discuss Kevin Durant and his ongoing drama with the Brooklyn Nets. While none of the guys think that Brooklyn should give into Durant’s demands for them to fire Steve Nash and Sean Marks, Jake and Brent believe that the Nets should trade Durant, and Roman suggests for Brooklyn to stand pact and do nothing with KD for now. The conversation then moves to the NFL Preseason. Brent talks about Zach Wilson’s minor injury, Roman analyzes the Steelers’ first preseason game against Seattle, and Jake fanboys about Desmond Ritter leading the Falcons to a game winning drive against Detroit. Afterwards, the guys breakdown their last division in the NFL: the AFC West. Surprisingly, all three of them are on the same page, with the Chargers finishing first, the Raiders and Broncos finishing second and third, and the Chiefs finishing last. They all unveil, but don’t predict(that’s for next episode), their NFL playoff brackets. Each bracket for both the NFC and the AFC brings something different to the table, but Brent’s bracket on the NFC side proves to be the most shocking. Roman, Jake, and Brent shake things up in this episode by welcoming in a special guest: Jack Glenn. They all reveal and break down their top ten quarterbacks in football, with each list being with a different perspective. Jake is looking at it from a fantasy standpoint, while Roman is going strictly off of real life. Brent and Jack are implementing a mixture of both for their rankings. Afterwards, the guys break down the NFC West. Roman is all in on Trey Lance and the 49ers, which sparks controversy amongst everybody, particularly Jack, who thinks the complete opposite. With Brent and Jake taking the neutral opinion on San Francisco, they project the Rams to once again be the dominant team in the division. The episode ends with a recap of everyone’s weeks. Brent is finally back after being gone for the last 3 episodes! He, Roman, and Jake begin this episode by discussing the news of Deshaun Watson’s suspension. While all 3 of them agree that the punishment is light and unfit for Watson’s actions, Brent and Jake believe that the suspension will remain at 6 games. Roman, on the other hand, thinks that the NFL will step in and extend Watson’s suspension. Next is a round up of stories from NFL Training Camp, with the guys mainly touching on Patrick Mahomes’ comments regarding the judgement of black quarterbacks. They then move on to Kyler Murray and the massive extension that he recently received from Arizona. While all 3 agree that the contract is warranted, Brent is skeptical of how it will work out for the Cardinals. Afterwards, the guys break down the AFC East, with all 3 of them solidifying the division as Buffalo vs the field. Opinions of the other three teams are mixed, however, with Brent taking the high on the Jets, and both him and Jake betting on the success of the Dolphins. Roman, on the other hand, is lower on both Miami and New York and believes that New England will be the Bills’ biggest “challenger.” The episode ends with a recap of everyone’s weeks, including Brent’s monthlong trip to Colorado! Roman and Jake, still without Brent, begin this episode by going over the recent news concerning Tennessee Football, which was notified of 18 Level 1 violations committed by former head coach, Jeremy Pruitt, his staff, and his wife, Casey Pruitt. They discuss the egregiousness of these violations and the circumstances surrounding them. This eventually leads to another discussion on the impact of NIL in college athletics, where Roman shares a bold prediction. The guys then move to a season preview of Memphis Football. Both Roman and Jake are higher than most on this Tiger football team, projecting them to finish 9-3 and contend for a conference championship in the American. Afterwards is a breakdown of the NFC East. Roman has the Cowboys narrowly taking this division via tiebreaker, while Jake has the Eagles breaking through and overtaking Dallas. Both agree, however, that this is a relatively poor division that should have low expectations. The episode ends, as usual, with a recap of Roman and Jake’s weeks. Brent is, once again, out for this episode; so Roman and Jake continue to hold down the fort in his absence. They begin this episode by finally discussing what is perhaps the biggest story in sports right now: college football and conference realignment. Both see this as mostly a negative for college football, with Roman going as far as to predict that college football will eventually make up of two super-conferences, those being the SEC and the BIG 10, that form their own playoff separate from the NCAA. Jake, while still being pessimistic, brings up the point that while super-conferences eliminate parity, the competition within them will be at a high level and, perhaps, better than ever before. They also mention that while this is disappointing for the University of Memphis, Tiger fans shouldn’t be concerned, since basketball is Memphis’ moneymaker and will remain largely unaffected by the realignment. The conversation then moves to a quick discussion on the end of the Summer League. Afterwards, the guys break down the AFC South. Roman still sees this as the Titans’ division with the Colts having another disappointing season, while Jake believes that Indianapolis finally gets over the hump and Tennessee falls off. The episode ends with a recap of Roman and Jake’s weeks. Roman and his brother cared for their puppies with their parents out of town, while Jake went to a leadership conference in Washington DC. Brent is in Colorado at Track Camp and is unavailable for this episode as a result. Roman and Jake are still holding it down, however, beginning this episode with a discussion on the NBA Summer League. They break down the summer’s biggest stars and predict who might end up winning it all. The conversation then moves to the financial future of the NBA, as players such as Damian Lillard and Karl Anthony-Towns have recently landed groundbreaking deals worth more than 60 million dollars per year. The guys explain how this trend will only continue to rise and why more should be expected out of players as a result. The episode ends with a breakdown of the NFC South. Roman sees it as Tampa Bay versus the field, while Jake, moping about the expected failure his Falcons, believes that the Saints can give the Buccaneers a challenge. Despite the absence of Brent, we hope that you still enjoy this 10th episode of the Men in Hoodies Podcast!
