Professor Daniels received her PhD in 2002 from Cornell University and joined the faculty of North Carolina State University in 2005, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Her main research interests center around experiments on the non-equilibrium and nonlinear dynamics of granular materials, fluids, and gels. Several of these studies have used idealized systems to provide insight into biological, geological, and solar system phenomena, including in rubble pile asteroids.

He has a Doctorate in Archeology from Canada’s Simon Fraser University, and his research interests include Northwest Coast archaeology, evolution in general, cognitive evolution, usewear analysis and the adaptation of humanity. He has a Master’s in anthropology from Portland State, and a Bachelor’s from University of Durham.

Rob did his PhD work with Hod Lipson at Cornell University and his postdoctoral work at MIT with Daniela Rus. Dr. Andy Aldrin is President of the Aldrin Family Foundation, an organization dedicated to harnessing the inspiration of space. Dr. Aldrin is also Program Chair and Founder of the Master of Space Operations program at Embry-Riddle University. Before moving into academia, Dr. Aldrin had a distinguished career in industry and government research, including executive positions at Boeing, United Launch Alliance and Moon Express. He serves on the board of several charitable organizations, including The Secure World Foundation, Sea Space Symposium, Space for Humanity, and the Tau Zero Foundation. Aldrin’s father, Buzz, walked on the Moon with Neil Armstrong.

Prof. Brian Kaplinger is an Assistant Professor in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kansas. His research interests include astrodynamics, trajectory and mission design, and vision-based spacecraft guidance, navigation and control. Prof. Kaplinger has collaborated with both Dr. Aldrin and Buzz Aldrin on a number of research projects exploring Mars Cyclers, which we’ll get into much more detail about in a moment.

  • André Bormanis is a science writer/producer for Star Trek, The Orville, and The End is Nye. Andre is a keen human observer and has been at the forefront of writing about cultural change through a space/sci-fi lens for decades.
  • Homer Hickam is an aerospace engineer, ISS astronaut trainer, and best-selling author of Rocket Boys and 18 other titles. He currently serves on the board of the US Space & Rocket Center (aka “Space Camp”) and is an amateur paleontologist.
  • Dan Hawk is the Principal Scientist for United First Nations Planetary Defense. Dan is a pioneer among native peoples for getting their views heard and ensuring tribes have access to everything other wealthy nations do, including space.
  • Jared Angaza is a strategist, activist, and master storyteller. He designs strategies and identities for disrupters, influencers, and futuremakers of our world. Jared is the Executive Director of the Human Space Program and is currently training citizen astronauts for spaceflight and integration.
  • Dr. Shawna Pandya is a physician, astronaut candidate, aquanaut, and more. It seems Shawna has done almost everything except actually travel to space, but I’m sure it won’t be long before she includes that among her accomplishments, too. She’s also a passionate voice for greater representation in STEM, and women in particular.

At the University of Michigan she completed one master’s degree in mechanical engineering and one in aeronautical engineering. Olabisi received her doctorate in biomedical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2020 she joined the UCI Biomedical Engineering department from Rutgers University where she was an assistant professor with an appointment in Biomedical Engineering and an affiliation with the Institute of Advanced Materials, Devices, and Nanotechnology. Olabisi is the recipient of a 2016 Engineering Information Foundation Award, a 2018 NSF CAREER Award, a 2019 Johnson & Johnson Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Manufacturing, and Design (WiSTEM2D) Scholar Award, and in 2019 she was named one of the Biomedical Engineering Society’s Young Innovators in Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering.

Dr. Sadasivan ShankarDr. Sadas Shankar, from SLAC National Laboratory and Stanford University, and focused on the future of computing, energy and material limits of silicon and the relative efficiency of biologic systems to our human-built computers.

Speaker Bio:

Sadasivan (Sadas) Shankar is Research Technology Manager at SLAC National Laboratory and Adjunct Professor in Stanford Materials Science and Engineering. He is also an Associate in the Department of Physics in Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and was the first Margaret and Will Hearst Visiting Lecturer in Harvard University and the first Distinguished Scientist in Residence at the Harvard Institute of Applied Computational Sciences. He has co-instructed classes related to materials, computing, and sustainability and was awarded Harvard University Teaching Excellence Award. He is involved in research in materials, chemistry, and specialized AI methods for complex problems in physical and natural sciences, and new frameworks for studying computing. He is a co-founder and the Chief Scientist in Material Alchemy, a “last mile” translational and independent venture for sustainable design of materials.

Dr. Shankar was a Senior Fellow in UCLA-IPAM during a program on Machine Learning and Many-body Physics, invited speaker in The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation on application of Machine Learning for chemistry and materials, Carnegie Science Foundation panelist for Brain and Computing, National Academies speaker on Revolutions in Manufacturing through Mathematics, invited to White House event for Materials Genome, Visiting Lecturer in Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics in UC-SB, and the first Intel Distinguished Lecturer in Caltech and MIT. He has given several colloquia and lectures in universities all over the world. Dr. Shankar also worked in the semiconductor industry in the areas of materials, reliability, processing, manufacturing, and is a co-inventor in over twenty patent filings. His work was also featured in the journal Science and as a TED talk.
