Genesis 41.1-43.Having successfully interpreted the dreams of two fellow inmates, despite promises to help him, Joseph is forgotten and left to rot in prison. But one day, Pharaoh too has two troubling dreams and they summon Joseph to tell his majesty what it all means. A moment of grace can dramatically change the course of your life in a single day. 9 August 2026.
Genesis 39.1-23.Despite being abused and sold by his jealous brothers into slavery, Joseph finds himself quickly elevated as the trusted manager of his new master's entire estate. But just as things are finally looking up, Joseph starts to be harassed with unwanted sexual advances and falls victim to false allegations before getting thrown in jail without trial. And yet four times in Genesis 39 it says, 'God was with Joseph'. How can someone so grievously wronged emerge as a giant of faith?2 August 2026.
Genesis 37.1-36.The story of Joseph takes up about a quarter of the Book of Genesis and is one of the most beautiful stories in the Bible. Precocious dreamer Joseph is wronged time and time again, starting with when his jealous brothers sell him to human traffickers and fake his death. What do his experiences of unfair treatment teach us about our own faith journey?26 July 2026.
Job 19.1-29.The main bulk of the Book of Job is an exchange between Job and three ‘friends.’ They philosophise and pile guilt on Job but never once pray with him. Job replies at every point affirming his innocence and turning to God in pain and bewilderment. It’s bleak reading. But in chapter 19 there’s an unexpected shaft of light where Job catches a glimpse of resurrection hope.19 July 2026.
Job 2.1-13.When it doesn't rain, it pours. Having lost his livestock, his servants and his children in a single day in chapter one, Job's health goes in chapter two. Adding insult to injury, we are now introduced us to Job's wife who, instead of supporting him, all but washes her hands of him, and to three friends who are so shocked by his appearance that words fail them. How do we hold on to God when life goes from bad to worse and we have to deal with failing health?12 July 2026.

Job 1.1-22.Job is one of the oldest books in the world, and it explores one of the oldest questions; why do bad things happen to good people? We learn from the first chapter that one reason is that unseen and dark forces exist. But in all circumstances the Lord is worthy of praise, and at the heart of the mystery of suffering is the majesty of the cross.5 July 2026.
Romans 12.3-8.How can a church with so many different sorts of people function well? Romans 12 teaches that it's all about having a true assessment of who we are, appreciating each others' gifts and using our own gifts with all our hearts for the enrichment of all. Revelation 2.1-7Our Ephesians series began in Acts 19 with the story of how the church in Ephesus came about. Having then journeyed through the letter itself, our series ends in Revelation 2 where the ascended Lord Jesus speaks to the same church a generation or so later. But it is not just about courageously overcoming overwhelming odds; it teaches about obedience, spiritual warfare, knowing that God is with us and how he wants to use us just as we are. 31 May 2026.
to modern-day stories of the persecuted church, we are challenged to trade our Western obsession with personal comfort for true gospel boldness. If the gospel is worth dying for around the world, it is absolutely worth living for right where we are.24 May 2026.
Ephesians 6.10-17As Paul comes towards the end of his letter, he makes sure his readers are aware of the unseen spiritual warfare they are in; one in which all Christians in every age must stand their ground and be fully equipped to withstand every assault from evil powers.17 May 2026.

Ephesians 5.1-14.Ephesians 5 picks up where chapter 4 left off, explaining what kind of holy life should spring from the truths outlined in chapters 1-3. The changes in our new way of life are night and day from what came before - or as Paul puts it, “once you were darkness, now you are light in the Lord.”19 April 2026.
Ephesians 4.17-32.What is an appropriate way of life for a person who has begun to follow Jesus? Ephesians 4 says it involves consciously discontinuing old behaviours and attitudes, and being empowered to adopt others as a healthy new pattern of life. This is what God has saved us for.12 April 2026.
Mark 16.1-6 and 1 Corinthians 15.1-8The first Easter Sunday is the most momentous day ever. It is a day of surprise, emotion, awe and wonder. As celebrations go, it is heaven’s greatest Champagne moment. What did the first witnesses of Jesus’ empty tomb make of it and how does the oldest written record of those events supply good evidence that it really happened?5 April 2026.
Ephesians 4.7-16.How do Christians grow in stature and get equipped for maturity in faith? The ascended Lord Jesus has a plan for that, blessing his church with many gifts including apostolic, prophetic, evangelistic, pastoral and teaching ministries. 29 March 2026.
Ephesians 4.1-6.The first three chapters of Ephesians lay a doctrinal foundation, but the last three are much more practical, starting with chapter 4 which calls for unity and maturity as we live out our faith in Christ. 22 March 2026.
Ephesians 3.14-21.In the second of Paul’s prayers for the Christians in Ephesus he asks God that they would have a deeper and surer grasp of the vast array of blessings that are already theirs. Do we fully realise the wealth that is ours in Christ?15 March 2026.
Ephesians 3.1-13.It was always God’s intention to make irreligious outsiders, hopelessly alienated from God, members of his royal family alongside his ancient chosen people, the Jews. So why did God delay this for centuries? Why wait so long? It’s a bit of a puzzle. Ephesians 3 explains. 8 March 2026.
Acts 11.19-26 and 13.1-3.The New Testament church in Antioch was a multinational community with richly diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This is evidence of the grace of God in their midst and is a great model for our own local church in Darlington. 1 March 2026.
Ephesians 2.11-22.How do you get enemies who don’t like each other and have nothing in common to become reconciled friends who feel like family? There’s only one way; the gospel. Ephesians 2 explains.22 February 2026.
Ephesians 2.1-10.In chapter two of Ephesians, Paul likens the salvation we all desperately need to the miraculous raising of a stone-cold corpse from death. This is no self-help personal improvement programme. “You were dead in your sins… but God…” Ephesians 2.1-10 answers three vital questions. What are you saved from? What are you saved by? And what are you saved for?15 February 2026.
Ephesians 1.15-23.In the first of his two extended prayers for the Ephesian believers, Paul asks that his readers would know God and experience his incomparably great power in them - which is the same as the mighty strength that raised Christ from the dead. Do we really know the reality of that power at work in us? What stands in the way of us doing so?8 February 2026.
Ephesians 1.3-14.Paul opens his letter to the Ephesians with a stunning outline of God’s eternal and invincible purposes in Christ. How overwhelmingly blessed we are and how infinitely praiseworthy is his grace. 1 February 2026.
Ephesians 1.1-2 and Acts 19.33-41.With the new church plant in Ephesus doing well, the gospel starts to provoke the spiritual powers that be. The Christian life its a battleground, not a playground!25 January 2026.
Acts 19.1-20In the first of two introductory talks on the letter to the Ephesians, we learn how the church was planted. It turns out to be a combination of extraordinary open doors, biblical proclamation, miracles, spiritual warfare and very hard work.18 January 2025.
Acts 2.42-47.The dynamic and growing early church prioritised Bible teaching, fellowship, breaking bread and prayer. They met both all together in the public sphere and in smaller groups in homes, a perfect model for all churches at all times and in all places.11 January 2025.

1 Peter 5.1-7Is there a biblical blueprint for church leadership? It is increasingly the norm in the UK to have one priest for a number of churches. But the New Testament norm is the exact opposite; a team of leaders for one church. And not ‘priests’ either, but ‘elders’ (1 Peter 2.9 says that all believers form a royal priesthood). Who should be local church elders and what kind of qualities should we expect of them? Peter explains in his first letter. 30 November 2025.
1 Peter 2.4-10.Having focused so far exclusively in this series on what people wrote about Peter, we now look at what he himself wrote. In his first letter Peter describes the church as a temple - the place where people encounter the presence of God, where heaven meets earth. But this temple is not made of limestone, mortar, timber and glass, but of transformed human lives, filled with the Holy Spirit. Are you a “living stone”?23 November 2025.
Acts 11.1-18.In Acts 10 and 11 Peter is involved in an incident that sees the gospel break free from its exclusively Jewish roots and start to propel outwards towards the ends of the earth. But Peter’s friends are freaked out by this and confront him angrily about it. How is Peter going to turn this sudden crisis into a window of opportunity?16 November 2025.
Acts 9.32-43.The early church continues to grow in numbers and expand outwards under Peter and the other apostles’ leadership. Many signs and wonders are done in Jesus’ name as they preach the gospel. But raising the dead? Peter had witnessed Jesus raising Jairus’ daughter in Luke 8. But now he is asked to raise a dead woman named Tabitha. Will this challenge prove to be a bridge too far?9 November 2025.
Acts 4.1-31.Following the healing of the lame beggar (Acts 3), it all kicks off because the religious authorities can see public support for the new Jesus movement is exploding - at their expense. Peter and the apostles are roughly treated and strictly forbidden to do anything in Jesus’ name. How will Peter lead the Christian response? And how should we respond to public pressure to be silent about our faith?2 November 2025.
Acts 3.1-16.Peter’s day is interrupted by a man begging at the temple gate. As it happens, Peter and John (who is with him) don’t have any cash on them, but they do have faith in the power of Jesus Christ. So Peter tells the man, who is lame from birth, to get up and walk in Jesus’ name, and then helps him to his feet. When Jesus said that his followers would do the mighty works he did - and greater ones still - this episode shows that he meant us to take him at his word. Acts 2.14-41.After the resurrection, restored by Jesus, Peter is a changed man. After Pentecost though, he is a new man. Peter is unrecognisable from all that came before once he is baptised in the Holy Spirit. How would you respond to Peter’s first sermon if you were listening in that day?19 October 2025.
John 21.1-19.After Peter’s threefold denial, the risen Lord Jesus offers him a way back. Standing by a charcoal fire, which must have reminded Peter of his dismal failure, Jesus pointedly asks Peter three times if he really loves him. Once that is affirmed, Peter is entrusted with spiritual leadership. How can we move on from our own failures and show that we love the Lord?12 October 2025.
Luke 22.31-62.His threefold denial, predicted beforehand by Jesus with pinpoint accuracy, is probably the thing Peter is most remembered for. Despite his protests that he would never deny his Lord, fear overtakes him and his night ends in catastrophic failure. What instruction and hope can we take from this story?5 October 2025.
John 13.1-17.On the night he was betrayed, denied and abandoned, Jesus ate a last meal with his disciples and interrupted proceedings to wash everyone's feet. Peter vigorously protested. Why was this so countercultural and what does it have to say to us in our very different culture?28 September 2025.
Mark 9.2-13 and 2 Peter 1.16-18.Imagine standing with Peter, James, and John as Jesus is suddenly transformed before your eyes, shining with a brilliant heavenly light. What did this awe-inspiring event mean for Simin Peter then, and what does it mean for us now?21 September 2025.
Mark 8.27-38.Within a minute, Peter goes from hero to zero as his prophetic revelation of Jesus' identity is followed immediately by a hell-inspired attempt to divert Jesus from his saving mission. How can we in turn grow in our expression of the prophetic and avoid getting it all wrong?14 September 2025.
Matthew 14.22-33.How do you move away from anxiety, towards trust in Christ? This well-known story of Peter's adventurous but wobbling faith has much to teach us about fixing our eyes on the Lord and keeping them there when it's tempting to divert them towards what scares us most.7 September 2025.
John 1.40-42 and Luke 5.1-11.Simon Peter must be the most loveable and endearing of Jesus’ twelve disciples. Who cannot identify with his journey of faith, punctuated with human failings? But Jesus called him first and invested in him most because he saw particular qualities in him - qualities he longs to see in us too. 31 August 2025.
Ruth 4.1-22. Chapter 4 of Ruth completes the story arc from ruin - to refuge - to redemption. After a last minute twist, Boaz marries Ruth, becoming her and Naomi's “guardian-redeemer.” Ruth then bears a child who will become King David's grandfather and feature in Jesus' family tree. The story of Ruth shows how God's wise sovereignty cannot be derailed, which is an unspeakably precious truth for us as Christians. 17 August 2025.
Ruth 3.1-18.With the barley harvest now over and eligible bachelor Boaz showing no romantic interest in Ruth, Naomi devises a high-risk plan to bring matters to a head, which Ruth bravely delivers. As Christians, we live by faith, not by sight, and are called to a life of obedience. So this chapter is rich with truth for us as well.10 August 2025.
Ruth 2.1-23.Back in Bethlehem, a destitute Ruth gleans barley in the field of a wealthy landowner called Boaz. He notices her hard work, protects her and provides for her. It dawns on Naomi that Boaz is a relative and potential “guardian-redeemer,” offering both Ruth and Naomi a glimpse of hope. In all this, God is subtly but decisively at work.3 August 2025.
Ruth 1.6-22.Following Naomi’s series of tragic sorrows at the beginning of chapter 1, she decides there is no future for her in Moab, and makes plans to return heartbroken to Bethlehem. One of her daughters-in-law, Orpah, opts to remain in Moab but the other, Ruth, in a breathtaking display of love and loyalty, proves inseparable. Ruth’s kindness and faithfulness echo the grace that the Lord shows to us. Just as Ruth accompanies Naomi home, Christ walks with us through life’s deepest disappointments.27 July 2025.
Ruth 1.1-5.The Old Testament book of Ruth is a beautiful short story of calamity, loyalty, vulnerability, hospitality and opportunity, with growing romantic suspense. Through all the changing fortunes of the story’s characters, the author skilfully shows how God slowly but surely weaves his grander purposes of grace and redemption into the everyday ups and downs of our lives. But the first five verses of Ruth 1 could hardly supply a more tragic introduction to the story…20 July 2025.
Philippians 4.10-23.The letter to the Philippians draws to a close with some final remarks from Paul before he signs off and sends his letter on. The end of the letter focuses on giving and gratitude, and it has much to say to us about generosity and God’s supply of all our needs. 13 July 2025.
Philippians 4.1-9.How do we live in harmony with people we don’t really get on with? How do we live stress-free instead of with constant anxiety? As Paul prepares to sign off his letter to the church in Philippi, he shows two women who weren't getting on how to live in peace with each other before giving two keys to unlock personal peace; leaving things with God instead of worrying, and focusing thoughts on wholesome things rather than on unhealthy things.6 July 2025.
Philippians 3.12-21.After stating his ambition to know Christ more fully in the first half of Philippians 3, Paul then explains how intends to make that a reality in the second half. Verses 12-21 outline five vital keys to unlock the prize of knowing Christ.29 June 2025.
Philippians 3.1-11.What do you think when you look back on your family tree, your upbringing and your achievements in life? And in what ways has becoming a Christian made a difference? As we move into chapter 3 of Philippians, we read about one man who had absolutely everything going for him, until his Christian conversion, which tipped his world upside down. And all that has massive implications for us too. 22 June 2025.
Philippians 2.19-30.Having just taught about having the heart of a servant and looking to each others' interests, Paul commends two of his team, Timothy and Epaphroditus, as exemplars of what he has been saying. Happy to play second fiddle and work hard in the shadows, these two men are a challenge to us, whose commendation will come from the Lord if we live as faithfully as they did.15 June 2025.
What does it mean to work out the salvation that we have received from God. Paul gives us some practical steps as read his instruction to the church in Philippi.

Philippians 1:21-30. Paul is unsure on which would be better, to live or to die, but he is sure that if he lives, that his life would be devoted to serving Jesus. And is he were to die, then it would be gain. Paul encourages the church to stand together in unity, a powerful challenge for the church today. 25 May 2025.
Philippians 1.12-20.Despite being detained in custody, Paul seems really upbeat; the gospel is bearing fruit not despite Paul's imprisonment, but because of it! This is spiritual advance through spiritual adversity. How can this be? And are there any instances of how this works practically in our day?18 May 2025.
Philippians 1.1-11.As Paul opens his joyful and prayerful letter to the young church in Philippi, he speaks of grace and peace; two foundational gifts from God that we must never lose sight of in our church today.11 May 2025.
In this talk, author, theologian and friend of King's Andrew Bunt speaks about current cultural attitudes towards sex and sexuality and he contrasts them with what the Bible teaches. Is the biblical view on human sexuality even viable in a society that so fundamentally disagrees with it? How does God's word fit with our deepest longings?4 May 2025.
Luke 24.13-35.This conclusion to our 'Before the Cross' sermon series focuses on the compelling story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Burdened by the weight of the past week's events, their being joined by a fellow traveller turns out to be an unexpected meeting with the risen Lord. Their encounter becomes a profound lesson in understanding Scripture and how it all points towards Jesus. 27 April 2025.
Luke 24.1-8.The four Gospels all agree; on the first day of the week, Jesus’ tomb was unexpectedly empty, the body was gone, but was later seen by several witnesses. Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day as he had said. No other explanation makes sense or stands up to scrutiny and that changes everything.20 April 2025
Our 7-part sermon series exploring Old Testament prophetic previews of the cross concludes with, beyond doubt, the clearest vision of them all. Isaiah 53 describes a servant; a man of sorrows, rejected and despised as he bears the sin of his people, who dies and is buried, but then appears alive again after his sufferings - all written down about 750 years before Jesus was even born.
Psalm 22.1-31.In this sixth of seven brief ‘trailers’ from the Old Testament, as if giving a sneak peek into an upcoming blockbuster film, David writes in the first person about a suffering individual, but it is clearly not himself. Acts 2 says that David was a prophet, and Psalm 22 is his clearest vision of the afflictions of his greatest descendant, born 1,000 years after the psalm was composed.6 April 2025.
Deuteronomy 21.22-23 and Galatians 3.10-14.In this fifth prophetic picture of Christ's afflictions from the Old Testament, an obscure detail in the Law of Moses is picked up by Paul in Galatians 3, shows how the cross turns curses into blessings.We apologise for the inferior sound quality in the first 4 minutes of this recording.30 March 2025.
Numbers 21.4-9.During the last year of their desert wanderings, the Israelites complain yet again and the Lord sends venomous snakes as a judgment. But, in another foreshadowing of the cross that Jesus himself refers to in John 3, Moses lifts up a bronze snake on a pole, and all who look to it are healed. 23 March 2025.
Leviticus 16.6-30.Another amazing prefiguring of the cross occurs in the book of Leviticus. A goat whose blood is shed to forgive guilt, and a goat who dies outside the city wall to remove shame. Both point to Jesus and his perfect sacrifice, making atonement, once for all.16 March 2025.
Exodus 12.1-13.In our second Old Testament passage foreshadowing the sufferings of Christ, we look at the Passover; where the blood of an innocent lamb without defect, on vertical and horizontal pieces of wood, protects those inside from judgement and death. This central celebration of the old covenant points to Christ and all he did on the cross to bring in a new and everlasting covenant.9 March 2025.
Genesis 22.1-18.Genesis 22 opens with a strange and traumatic story about God testing a man by calling him to offer his beloved son on an altar of sacrifice. But God provides an alternative and the whole event points forward to Jesus' perfect offering of himself, once for all, on the same mountain centuries later.2 March 2025.
Matthew 25.31-46.Jesus concludes three parables concerning the Last Things with the metaphor of a shepherd separating his sheep from his goats, symbolising the Lord's sorting the entire human race into two groups at the last judgement, defined by what they did or failed to do. How does this agree with justification by faith alone? How should we respond to the message of this story?23 February 2025.
Matthew 25.14-30.In this series of three parables in Matthew 25, Jesus shows us what faith must look like. In v1-13, he tells us faith must be ready. In v31-46, he says faith must be generous. But in this parable, he tells us faith must be active. Active faith will be multiplied and rewarded at the final judgement, but inactivity and self-centred idleness will have terrible consequences.16 February 2025.
Matthew 25.1-13.In Matthew 25, Jesus tells three parables to his disciples about the need to be ready and expectant for his return in glory. This is the first of them. This is no time to be sleeping on the job! Are you awake? Are you ready? Do you know the Lord?9 February 2025.
Matthew 24.29-51.In the second part of chapter 24, having spoken at length about AD 70 (which was then fulfilled in remarkable detail), Jesus mostly focuses on the end of the age when he will return. What should we expect, and how should we prepare for this event, which will happen as surely in the future as Jesus' words about the destruction of the temple were fulfilled in the past?2 February 2025.
Matthew 24.1-28.In Matthew 24, Jesus gives his disciples a sweeping overview of the future. Some of it was fulfilled about 40 years later in AD 70, when the Roman Empire crushed a Jewish revolt and destroyed Jerusalem and its temple. But some of it is yet to be fulfilled. In part I of a two-part exploration of this chapter, we can see why the events of AD 70 are so relevant to us nearly two centuries later.26 January 2025.
Matthew 23.13-39.Jesus concludes his sparring match with the clergy of his time with a devastating series of curses on their dismal organised religion. They have shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces and have not entered it themselves. It's over for them. Oh, that we would put to death the Pharisee that so quickly rises up in us.19 January 2025.
Matthew 23.1-12.Jesus warns his disciples against religious hypocrisy, which was a strong feature of the Pharisees' way of life. Always concerned to look good and be treated with deference by the common people, Jesus says that these are the very opposite of the Kingdom of God he is inaugurating. Apologies: the first few minutes of this sermon are missing due to a technical issue.12 January 2025.
Matthew 22.34-46.At the end of a series of tests and traps from Israel's religious leaders, an expert in the Law is sent to test him one last time with a question about the greatest commandment of the 613 stipulations in the Law of Moses. Jesus answers with not one, but two commandments that summarise the entire Old Testament, before making his detractors look like mugs yet again with a question of his own, after which nobody dares ask him any more questions.5 January 2025.
What child does not relish the chance to see Santa in his grotto? But the question he asks is a bit problematic. Have you been good this year? How good is good enough to get a present? Isn't grace about receiving gifts because we're loved?

Philippians 2.5-11.One of the most stunning passages in the Bible on the Christmas miracle describes the majestic, omnipotent Son of God humbled himself to become a defenceless spec, smaller than half a grain of sand, to become one of us, and save us. John opens up the passage and points out some of the implications for us.8 December 2024.
Matthew 22.15-33.In the week before his death, several different groups (not friendly among themselves but united in their hostility towards Jesus) approach him trying to catch him out. In this passage, religious hardliners, liberals and politicians alike all fail to trap him as each time, Jesus amazes them with his brilliant response. 1 December 2024.
Matthew 22.1-14.In this parable, God is a father arranging the wedding of his son. But some snub the father with lame excuses. So, Plan B, the father sends servants out all over town to fill the hall. Then, in another twist, one of the guests is not dressed for the occasion and is ejected from the feast. What can it all possibly mean? 24 November 2024.
Matthew 21.33-46.It's Tuesday of Passover week. Jesus is three days away from his death and he speaks to the religious authorities about it in the form of a story showing how the Old Testament prophets were constantly rejected by faithless Israel. Jesus will be the latest (and greatest) in this long line. But like dispensing with a foundation, making the building collapse and crush anyone inside, it will turn out to be catastrophic for all those who reject him.17 November 2024.
Matthew 21.23-32.Annoyed by Jesus' incendiary behaviour the previous day, the temple leadership approach Jesus when they find him teaching publicly and ask him what right he has to be doing that. Jesus responds with a simple question which perfectly exposes their evil intentions before telling a story which shows that repentant sinners are more righteous than finely dressed clergy with unbelieving hearts.10 November 2024.
Matthew 21.12-22.In the week leading up to the cross, the tension between Jesus and the religious authorities grows and grows. Not least because Jesus' behaviour is increasingly confrontational. He causes a right old disturbance in the temple and then curses a perfectly healthy-looking fig tree, making it wither and die. What is going on? What did it mean for those watching these extraordinary scenes and what does it mean for us today?3 November 2024.
Matthew 21.1-11.At the beginning of the week that will end in his death, Jesus enters Jerusalem humbly, on a donkey, triggering a fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy about the Messiah. What will people make of it? Will they welcome him as king of their nation? And will we welcome him as king of our lives?27 October 2024.
Matthew 20.17-34.On Jesus’ way to Jerusalem he predicts his death for the third and final time before being met with two very different requests; one for honour and the other for healing. In this sermon, we are invited to join Jesus on the road and to explore why he responded in the way he did to each request. 20 October 2024.
Matthew 20.1-16.Why is life so unfair? Why has he got more than I have? Why is she prettier than me? Constant comparisons with others can lead to life becoming quite miserable. Jesus tells a parable to his quick-to-compare disciples to show them that in the Kingdom of God, the values are not the same.13 October 2024.
Matthew 19.16-26.A wealthy young individual, confident in his impeccable record of good works, approaches Jesus and asks what he needs to do in order to inherit eternal life. Jesus' reply leaves him crestfallen and the disciples greatly astonished.6 October 2024.
Matthew 19.13-15.On a day when the disciples are rebuking parents for bringing their little ones to Jesus in the hope that he will bless them, Jesus - as usual - turns the world's values upside down and orders that they be allowed to come to him. But why does he then say that the kingdom of heaven belong to those who are like children? In our children-oriented society the answer may not be at all obvious to us.29 September 2024.
Matthew 19.1-12.The Pharisees approach Jesus with an apparently random question about marriage and divorce. As so often with the Pharisees, it's a trap. What is Jesus going to say about how God views divorce in a society where ditching your wife was as easy as signing your autograph? Jesus, as usual, gives a startling reply.22 September 2024.
Matthew 18.21-35.Jesus' words about dealing with sin in the local church (Matthew 18.15-20) prompt a question in the mind of Simon Peter. How many times should we forgive people who have wronged us? Jesus' reply is more than Peter bargained for. Apologies: the first few minutes of this recording including the Bible reading was lost due to a technical problem.15 September 2024.
Matthew 18.15-20.Sometimes, relationships in even the best local churches can turn sour. How should we go about repairing broken fellowship, and what should we do if, despite all our best efforts, things don't improve? Jesus anticipates that church life would not always be sweetness and light, so he gives us a simple process and a superb promise for when things go wrong.8 September 2024.
Matthew 18.1-14.Jesus uses a child to explain what greatness looks like in the Kingdom of Heaven. Why does he respond to the disciples' question about greatness by pointing to a child? 1 September 2024.
Matthew 17.22-27.Following Jesus' second prediction of his death, there is an unusual episode about the temple tax, where Jesus has a decidedly novel idea for payment - finding the sum for two people's annual liability in the mouth of a fish. What's all this about? John walks us through this surprising story.25 August 2024.
Matthew 17.14-21.A short while after hitting the heights of the mountaintop with Jesus and his transfiguration, we are back in the valley with lack of faith and lack of power. Phil Hillsdon takes us through that experience of knowing there's more of heaven's power available for us but of just feeling inadequate. How do we grow in faith and authority?18 August 2024.
Matthew 17.1-13.The transfiguration on the mountain is not just a moment in the Gospel but an event in history. Jesus choosing to become man veiled his heavenly glory, but in this moment he chooses to reveal it to three of his disciples. A truly awesome event that God still wants to speak to us through today. 11 August 2024.
Matthew 16.21-28.Following his spectacular revelation of Jesus' true identity, Peter goes from hero to zero by anxiously appealing to Jesus not to go to the cross. The Lord said that Peter was “blessed” to have had the revelation that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God, but now Jesus sees the work of the devil in him. What, for Peter, sounded like a calamity, is for us a glorious testament to how much the Lord loves us – that he would willingly “suffer many terrible things” to save us from a fate worse than death.4th August 2024.
Matthew 16.13-20.In chapter 16 of Matthew's Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples one of the most important questions anyone can face: 'Who do you say I am?' Peter's inspired response triggers Jesus setting out his great and glorious vision statement - one that is still in operation today, and one we all have a part in.28 July 2024.
Matthew 16.1-12.Jesus gave many warnings during his ministry but one of the most curious was to avoid the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees. What did he mean? Michael unpacks this for us and shows how it is a warning we have to take seriously in our day too.21 July 2024.
Matthew 15.21-39.Matthew 15 contains one of the most puzzling passages in the four Gospels; Jesus' encounter with a Canaanite woman, whose daughter is in desperate need. Jesus' response to her appears cold - even rude. What is going on? John explores this passage and then walks with us through another slightly strange story which follows it - the feeding of the 4,000. Coming so soon after feeding 5,000, it feels bizarrely (for an amazing miracle) almost like an anticlimax. But it contains a highly relevant challenge for us all.14 July 2024.
Matthew 15.1-20.A delegation of Pharisees and teachers of the law arrive from Jerusalem to confront Jesus about the way he is carrying on. But Jesus replies that he is simply disregarding their man-made traditions, while they are finding ever-more ingenious ways of avoiding obedience to holy scripture. Despite Jesus being crystal clear on this matter, Michael shows us how the Church down the years has, at times, been just as guilty of elevating churchy rules above God's word.7 July 2024.
Matthew 14.22-36.Jesus approaches his disciples, who have been rowing hard for nine hours, walking on the water. It scares the living daylights out of them but this passage is quite important for helping us understand the dynamics of fear and faith in our own hearts.30 June 2024.
Matthew 14.13-21.As Jesus seeks a bit of solitude to digest the awful news of his cousin John the Baptist's death, large crowds flock around him and, filled with compassion, he tends to their needs. In particular, their need for nourishment. But there's a problem; a totally inadequate supply that cannot meet the demand. Michael explains how, for Jesus, 'impossible is nothing.'23 June 2024.
Matthew 13.53 - 14.12.After almost thirteen full chapters of Jesus' amazing and popular ministry, we get an abrupt change of mood, with Jesus' own home town turning against him and John the Baptist meeting his gruesome and untimely death. Why? Where is God when everything goes wrong? John Lambert explores some of the questions that arise when faith is shaken.16 June 2024.

Sam Little, who with wife Abi and family, is planting a church in Siem Reap, Cambodia, shares about cross-cultural mission from Acts 8, where the evangelist Philip has a divine encounter with an Ethiopian official.
After being raised from the dead, Jesus gathers his disciples and gives them some final instructions. What will he leave them with? What will their response to him be? What about ours?
On the third day, he rose again from the dead, according to the scriptures. Michael shares about how the first disciples, initially sceptical and fearful, began to be certain of Jesus' resurrection from the dead.
And so, after a judicial scandal, a severe flogging, mocking laughter and agonising crucifixion, we reach the moment when Jesus takes his last breath. What did that mean for him? What does it mean for us? What are the monumental implications of what Jesus did for us on the cross?
Having had the death sentence passed by Pontius Pilate, Jesus is handed over to be crucified and is mocked by Roman soldiers before he is led off. Michael explains what crucifixion was like and what it all means for us.
Guest speaker Alan Bell from Emmanuel Church Durham continues opening up the story of Christ's passion. The ruling religious council send Jesus to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, hoping to secure the death penalty of a man they know is innocent of any crime.
The story of Christ's passion continues with the tragic and troubling episode of Judas' despair and suicide. It raises so many questions. Was Judas ever saved? If so, did he lose his salvation? Is that even possible? Was this all part of God's plan? If so, how can Judas have been responsible? And what does this passage have to say to us in our own walk with God?
Moving on from Gethsamene, we follow Jesus into the home of the high priest, where he is interrogated by the chief priests and elders who seek an opportunity to condemn him to death. Following closely behind is Peter, anxious and desperate to listen in on proceedings.
Continuing the narrative of the events of Jesus’ last week, Matthew describes the agony and stress Jesus experienced just before his arrest as his disciples all fall asleep and then run off.
What can we say about the last meal Jesus ate with His disciples before his death? Compared to the teaching, healing, and miracles of the previous chapters, and the drama of what was about to take place, Mathew 26.17-30 seems quiet, understated and easily passed over. But in this simple Passover meal Jesus reveals a truth that shook the world and continues to do so today.
In the last week of Jesus' life, we find the chief priests in Jerusalem plotting to kill Jesus, and Judas now willing to hand him over to them for money. But between these two ugly scenes of conspiracy and treachery, Matthew inserts a sharply contrasting scene of beautiful devotion and loyalty.
Jesus closes his coaching session with the twelve in Matthew 10 by warning them that they will face opposition not only from society at large but also from close family members. What should Christians do when our loved ones reject the Lord?
The end of chapter 9 and the start of chapter 10 mark a key transition in Matthew's Gospel. Jesus' chosen twelve go from being called 'disciples' (meaning 'students') to 'apostles' (literally 'sent ones'). Jesus looks out with such compassion on the crowds that he decides the time is right to multiply his fantastically effective mission by a factor of twelve.
Jesus healed many people in his life and ministry. In Matthew 9, he heals two blind men who cry out for mercy. What does this healing tell us about Jesus' heart of compassion for all?
Jesus came down to Earth from Heaven so that we might have the right to go to Heaven from Earth. Starting his talk up a ladder on the seventh rung, and working down with each point, John explains how completely Jesus became one of us.
How did humble and disregarded shepherds respond to the news that a Saviour had been born for the likes of them? And how do we respond to the news that he has been born for the likes of us?
Our school Nativity plays and candlelit carol services usually focus on the side of the Christmas story told by Luke with its shepherds, angels and baby in a manger. But Matthew tells us about an altogether darker side, showing us how evil the world really is and therefore how great the love of God is that he decided to send us a Saviour - the Prince of Peace.
In Matthew 2.1-12 strange visitors from the east are led by unusual phenomena in the night sky to seek out a new king in the land of Israel. But the evil Herod is disturbed by these developments that he fears will rival his reign.

'Open the eyes of my heart Lord'. Amazing things happened in the Old Testament but what we have in Jesus trumps them all by a mile. The question is, are we living on the side which Jesus won for us? On Sunday we will be exploring just how incredible being a Christian really is.
This week, Mike will be speaking to us about the famous story of David and Goliath. Perhaps one of the best known stories of the scriptures, a story of a shepherd boy, born in Bethlehem, conquering a fierce opponent that seemed unstoppable.
Where others looked and saw a scary opponent that could not be killed, David saw a defenceless man who was about to meet his fate.
Can we think of another who would be born in Bethlehem, the good shepherd, an unlikely king? He would go on to defeat the true enemy that would seem unstoppable to all others.
This week, Graham opens and unpacks Exodus 17 where Moses strikes the rock bringing forth water for the Israelites.

This week, John Lambert spoke from Acts 12, the next part in our current sermon series.
Up to Acts 12, the church had been on a streak of success, experiencing one exciting conversion after another. First, there was Saul of Tarsus, then the Gentile centurion Cornelius, and then the highly successful work among Gentiles (and Jews) in Antioch. But in Acts 12, the ugly opposition inspired by Satan again raises its head.

In this episode Mike sits down to talk to Dani Rusu from Centrul Creștin in Brașov. Dani and his team lead the church that has answered the call to help Ukrainian refugees crossing the boarder into Romania.
They talk a little about the church and the work that the church is doing to help. We hear some of the powerful stories which they have experienced from stepping out into what God has asked them to do. Also how we as a church can support them, perhaps practically but also in prayer.
In this episode Mike sits down to talk to Oleg and Joseph from our church family in Ukraine. We hear of how Oleg has had to move from the intense fighting in Kiev in order to love people for the sake of the gospel.
Christcentral churches have set up four humanitarian hubs within the country helping meet the needs of thousands. We ask Oleg to share some of his story and how we can pray for them as a church.

As human beings, we are always on the lookout for something real, and intensely suspicious of anything counterfeit. The early disciples of Jesus realised they had found and experienced something genuine, and even strangers were impressed.

The sudden, dramatic deaths of Ananias and Sapphira served to purify and warn the church. It was not some obscure incident from the Old Testament regarding a violation of Mosaic Law, it occurred in the first-century church to believers in Jesus Christ.
How does this story of Ananias and Sapphira relate to the modern church today?

This week, we continue in sermon series in the book of Acts. Steve will be talking from Acts 3: 1-26 where Peter and John meet a lame beggar.
The name, gender, age, and nationality of the beggar is not given, but what we do know is that he is a marginalised, homeless, and poor child of God who was always at the entrance of the Temple. Peter and John demonstrate that healing through the name and in the power of Jesus brings new life.
What does this encounter mean for us today?

In chapter 3:13-18, James calls for those who are wise to show it in their daily lives and gives us examples of what that looks like. To be peace loving, merciful people, who demonstrate those characteristics daily.
