[00:07:24]Once I got there just this confidence, I was able to take it out into the world and share it with everyone.

[00:07:46] I had to become my own person in order to live a life.

[00:09:32] How far can I push my physical body all naturally.

[00:09:53] That was really an aha moment. It was like, oh, I can do anything if I put my mind to it.

[00:10:51] I definitely set a lot of goals for myself and I make them very realistic.

[00:11:29]A lot of times it's about really working with the team and figuring out how to work together. You're not always going to be successful. So how are you going to be. A success, even though you failed.

[00:14:55]I feel like a lot of Business owners, a lot of people in business don't enjoy the fruits of their labor.

[00:15:05]I'm impatient. I like to get things done and I like to make things happen immediately. And I'm learning now that there's a process.

[00:15:51] Being a business owner is very lonely. But it doesn't have to be.

[00:18:43] It was the perfect stepping stone into what we were doing, even though it wasn't exactly what we wanted.

[00:19:09] It was really about having a core team that you can depend on because not everyone has that passion that you doand it's so hard to find those people. But when you do. It's so important to hold on to them and treat them really well.

[00:20:20] I think that being passionate, caring, just will give you back so much more.

[00:21:23]At 10 feet smile, or, at least acknowledge that person exists. And then at four feet say something, greet them. It's as simple as that.

[00:22:46] It's all about listening and putting yourself in that person's shoes and giving them the platform to just speak their mind and get off their chest.

[00:26:41] You're making me think. I need to add some questions to our interview lists. Have you played team sports? Might be useful.

[00:28:09] It all comes back to me. It's up to me to make the decision…I just need time to think about what really is going to invoke passion out of me.

[00:03:49] Sports build character, they build leadership qualities.

[00:04:28]Who do we want to be? And what do we want to stand for as an organization?

[00:08:07]When you get in a room full of athletes, there are certain things that it doesn't matter what sport you played. There's a certain amount of resilience.

[00:10:33]I challenge everyone daily to be leaders from where they are.

[00:10:51]Leadership isn't necessarily title oriented. Positional leadership is the worst kind.

[00:11:08]It's about who you are, what your actions are, your relationships and things like that.

[00:12:12]People struggle when they're unclear about what to do and that's when they slip into their own bad habits.

[00:14:20]Any team that you're on needs to have pieces that fit well together, and I learned that play in sports before I ever learned it anywhere else.

[00:18:32] Most people just want to be treated with respect. They want to be talked to in a way that they can understand.

[00:21:00] I appreciate people being able to have open conversations with me and disagree, which is something I've encouraged them to do, but still at the end of the day, we're going to be professional. We're going to do what we need to do.

[00:24:37] I got some great people who look, nothing like our kids, their backgrounds are nothing like our kids and they're the best people in those kids' lives.

[00:26:31]This is who we should be versus we are right now.

[00:27:05] I believe that our school is the most important asset that this community has.

[00:32:19] I'm in it right now. You're going through some things, but we're going to be okay, we're going to get through this.

[00:35:15]It's about making decisions that are based, not on just our base desires or the whim or that, that moment of feeling, Hey, I want this, but actually looking at things and how they're going to work, how they're going to fit together and trying to make the best decision.

[00:36:11] You're never stuck in a position. How do we reevaluate and do what is mission appropriate for us and not this moment, age and stage in our life.

[00:03:39] Sports taught me the importance of effort over talent, more than anything.

[00:04:28] I was very fortunate that my coaches taught me the importance of really outworking your talent and what that can look like throughout life.

[00:05:01] It's not what you're born with, but what are you intentionally choosing to build every day?

[00:06:37]The importance of getting back into the work of not giving up when it gets challenging.

[00:08:26]I can compare myself to what every other group has, the money, the influence, the celebrity, that's what they all do,or I can just be the hardest worker for the goal. And figure out how to work smarter and how to work harder than everybody else, which is what I had to do in sports.

[00:10:53]There's a lot of people that are going to ask for what can I do to get better. And there's a lot less people that ask and then do the work. Everybody wants to know the knowledge. And a lot of people have the knowledge, but very few people want to do it.

[00:11:38]The ones at the top still have people coaching them, mentoring them, working with them, whether they're on the athlete side, coach, side administration, business, you name it because you need help further shoring up your blind spots. Because a lot of times you don't know what you don't know.

[00:12:39] It's an obsession to get feedback and apply that feedback to get better.

[00:14:26] The way we get better at delivering feedback and really the way we get better at accepting is by taking the personal feelings out of it.

[00:15:48]The better we get it in taking feedback, not on a personal level, but on a productive level, the better we can grow.

[00:16:47] Everything that you do is 100% up to you.

[00:17:04] What do you do well? And how do you build on it? Focus on what you do and put your blinders on.

[00:21:31]What's the end goal?

[00:22:00] It's the curiosity game, because we need to get to the root of it.

[00:22:29]You only have so many hours in the day and people struggle dramatically with delegating.

[00:22:50] Head coach is management. It's getting the right people, putting them in the right position and then helping them succeed. That is a hundred percent their goal.

[00:23:23]If your goal is to get somewhere, there's a bunch of different ways to do that, why would we do the way that's going to take the longest instead of do the way that's probably the best for you and we'll take the least amount of time?

[00:24:27]We fail to realize is failure is a learning opportunity to make you better.

[00:24:44]Failed: step back and evaluate, what did I learn? What did I do well? What can I do better? How can I apply this new knowledge to the next time?

[00:25:00]When you stop looking at pursuing that greatness as I succeed or failed and more like a science experiment, which is really all, everything should be in life. Then you start seeing opportunities to improve because a scientist isn't getting frustrated. They're saying, okay, that didn't work. What can I try differently?

[00:28:41]If your mind is anywhere, but the present moment, the chances you succeed in that moment are out.

[00:29:20] How do you win your next moment? How do we win the next choice? The next moment, the next opportunity.

[00:30:11] If you're worried about what happened yesterday, that's not going to help you. If you're worried about tomorrow, that's not going to help you.

[00:34:54] How do we ever expect to pull the best out of other people? If we don't first try to connect with them?

[00:35:00]You can't get to a player's head until you get to their heart. Like people have got to know your care and you're invested in seeing them succeed.

[00:35:30]The most important thing you can do is build religion with the people that you work with so you understand who they are. What they're trying to do, what success looks like to them, because then you're in an opportunity to help them reach that.

[00:37:55] As coaches, how are we watching, how other coaches connect with their players? What are they doing to connect with their players?

[00:38:59]When I sit down and look at this, I'm looking at this to study how I can become better. It's all I care about. I don't care where I am in comparison to them. I don't care what they're doing. What I'm doing is different. How can I learn from them and be better? And so you put all ego aside.

[00:40:57] No matter how far down the highway you drive, you're still the same distance to the ditch. And he said at first, Andrew said, man, that seems like it's overwhelming. Like you're never going to get to a point where it's easier and that tug of the addiction is never there. And his friend said it's actually the most freeing thing in the world because it means I'm always going to be vigilant and focused on the road instead of letting myself drift off and go into the ditch

[00:42:46] Social media. It just got to be a nightmare because you're seeing all these wins, and so you continually have to remind yourself, this is a snapshot, not the full picture.

[00:43:10] Is the person I'm looking at doing what I'm trying to do and on the same journey I am?

[00:44:06] How can I not just be full of knowledge, but be full of wisdom because wisdom is taking the information that's in your head, which is knowledge and applying it. It's great to have knowledge. It's better to have wisdom.

[00:45:45] How can I not compare myself to you, but how can I find something to learn from everybody I've come across.

[00:46:14] Practice of controlling your controllables because you only control you your actions, effort, and attitude, and how you respond to those situations.

[00:00:54] You have to start in the body to change the landscape of the mind.

[00:05:26] You're part of a group. You're part of a team. You have a piece where you're showing up as, as one of many. But hopefully what you're doing is you're peeling away and starting to understand what's your purpose is.

[00:07:48] One of the things I've noticed as I've gotten older is that there's only so much we actually have control over.

[00:08:39] It takes a subtle sensitivity to the group that you're working with, to the project you're working on, to shepherd it through and then there's the surprise element. Like it's a surprise. Sometimes it's as much of a surprise when it succeeds as when it fails.

[00:08:56] You're doing something that doesn't exist yet. You're taking steps, big steps, sometimes huge courageous steps into an unknown future. And crossing fingers you've done your homework or there's enough support for you.

[00:10:23] Another mantra that I really liked, which is that more is not better, better is better.

[00:12:45] People have to figure out who am I? And what do I do exactly?

[00:12:59] Any person's going to walk in, I'm going to have to figure out what other goals, where are they deficient? How can I shore up their deficiencies and how can I help them learn what is a realistic goal for them?

[00:15:05] A lot of people got the go go, go, go, go. But a lot of people do not have the means of saying, wait a second. It's too far. It's too much.

[00:19:50] I studied intensely biomechanics exercise physiology. I continue to study. I'm like geekish, study kind of gal and I study and apply. I've got my own little lab here. And I hold myself to super high standards.

[00:23:02] I realized that alone, I could do very little, but in a team I could do a ton.

[00:26:10] I have to show up and be in my absolute best self in order to run this business.

[00:26:57] I've had to adjust my vision and trust.

[00:28:46] Comparing ourselves to other people can be really heavy.

[00:28:56] And as an athlete, there's always going to be someone faster, bigger, stronger, maybe unless you're the fastest, biggest strongest, but you are going to have your own unique gift that nobody else is going to have.

[00:30:57] I believe that we make a lot of choices to make other people happy. We make choices because we think we're supposed to.

[00:31:10] Back to honoring the individual self-nurturing what, your best, greatest gifts are the thing that you're going to bring to the world. The thing that you're going to offer, be it in athletics or business is something nobody's ever seen before. And so, if you compromise it on the way up, you're going to lose that special flame that you have, that special quality that you have, or you're going to not trust it.

[00:10:20] Do I go and look for this job that I might hate in six months, eight months. Or do I jump and go into this place of true uncertainty, but I think it's leading me towards my purpose, my calling, my vocation.

[00:15:02] It's not about being resilient. It's how are you resilient?

[00:16:49] My definition of self-awareness is my ability to be able to learn myself, accept myself and be myself.

[00:17:15] Do I learn myself? Do I ask myself questions that I typically don't get answered?

[00:17:34] I mean, don’t get asked what am I passionate about? How am I uncommon? How am I resilient? Those are questions that. We don't ask ourselves. And because we don't ask ourselves, we don't answer.

[00:18:18] I don't live with regret. Decisions are decisions they're not bad or good. They just are.

[00:18:38] I really, truly believe that most people's trust issues are rooted because they don't trust themselves.

[00:18:56] I define love as a commitment to someone else's wellbeing.

[00:19:23] So that commitment to someone's wellbeing starts with am I committed to my own wellbeing?

[00:20:03] It's not about me wanting what's best for you. According to my expectations, it's me wanting what's best for you according to your expectations.

[00:21:06] The relationship has to be strong enough to bear the weight of the truth.

[00:22:27] There's the difference between accepting feedback and craving feedback?

[00:24:17] The better I am, the better I get to be for the people who need me to be.

[00:25:04] Do you intentionally set aside 15 minutes per day to really intentionally approach getting better, development?

[00:28:00] Transformation is nothing but a fancy word for change. And most people don't like change.

[00:28:54] A coach is just someone who takes people to places that they wouldn't be able to go in their own.

[00:31:05] Change with the times, but cling to unchanging principles.

[00:31:34] If you listen to anybody great, these one percenters that we admire, who whatever industry they come into, they all talk about the same things: hard work, discipline, respect, integrity, love communication.

[00:32:46] Principles over procedures. And how do I change what the times and modify the procedures.

[00:34:59] If I'm on an airplane and somebody asks me what I do, I tell them I add value to people's lives.

[00:35:40] You just helped me make sense out of nonsense…I help people clear fog the fog in their lives.

[00:35:59] I just show up as me and I provide a space that allows people to see me being me and therefore feel more comfortable being them.

[00:04:09] Whether that's a team for a long period of time or whether it ends up being just a small short team having a shared experience and shared connection is really meaningful.

[00:08:01] Every transaction is actually there is some sport to it, but it's a partnership and we're working together towards a common goal.

[00:10:19] That is so rewarding to see that success, to have all 11 people do their job

[00:10:42] It's not necessarily the games that you remember the most. It's the practices, and it's also whether it's the conflict or the heartbreak or the heartache, it's all those hard challenges that you actually have a lot of your memories about.

[00:11:54] One thing that you realize is that you're going to get through it, for the most part, you're not going to die.

[00:12:36] That certain adversity that you dealt with. If you're able to react and deal with the adversity and overcome it, that there can be tremendous feeling of success.

[00:16:05] Recognizing that everyone has their skills and sometimes you're going to need to actually, lift somebody up or give them encouragement.

[00:16:22] A lot of a team sport is actually emotional and mental. It's not just about physicality.

[00:16:44] The more that everyone can share with making everybody better around them is what makes a team better.

[00:17:10] Sometimes you're put into a team work environment where you have to work with who you have and who your teammates are and figure out what the best role is for everyone to have.

[00:18:25] As a leader, that usually it means that you're going to have to make some sacrifices for yourself personally.

[00:20:52] The classic kind of teamwork is you're forming and then you're storming and then you're norming and then you're performing and it takes a while to get there.

[00:21:38] But so much more about being a captain or a leader is actually about how you treat others and how you work with them.

[00:23:10] Your integrity is something that's going to go with you throughout your life. And whether that's your sportsmanship and the way that if you're in a sport in the way that you carry yourself and the way that you carry yourself in a time of loss and they carry yourself in time of victory. That's the same as integrity in business.

[00:25:54] Showing up is so much part of performance in life.

[00:28:55] You can all have that best experience by yourself, but it certainly is better to have that with somebody and share that in memory.

[00:32:46] I can't stress the value ofpushing those boundaries a little bit for anyone and anything, because that's where you're going to grow by having a new experience.

[00:33:07] And it might be something that, that makes you uncomfortable and it might be uncomfortable for a day. It might be uncomfortable for a week. It might be a month. But in the end when you look back at what was uncomfortable. There's going to be growth and there's going to be movement forward.

[00:34:21] What sports provide. Is an opportunity for repetitive failure and repetitive discomfort, which then you have to overcome.

[00:35:06] There's no growth in comfort.

[00:05:15] You're selling teams of people to major brands and trying to get them to believe that your team can perform at a higher level than somebody else's team.

[00:08:12] Being competitive and having a drive to win.

[00:08:55] We had to be creative. And we had to think about how are we going to improve our skills, our strength, and most importantly, and relevant in business today is our strategy for coming up with a winning recipe.

[00:10:18] You get yourself into a situation. Yeah. You find a way to, when you deliver you compete and doors open and opportunities open themselves.

[00:11:02] The professional services industry overall and the ad business. It requires an understanding of people.

[00:12:37] The only thing worse than losing. Is winning in a dishonorable way and I never wanted to win it at the expense of somebody else.

[00:13:13] Being honorable and making sure that you win the right way and you treat people fairly and with respect and they recognize that you earned the victory, you didn't steal it or get it in any inappropriate way. That's a foundation for a very good long-term relationship with when everybody you come up against.

[00:14:51] The characteristic that is inherent in you as a person that makes you say, keep fighting, keep doing all the right things. Do the discipline work that it takes to succeed and over time it will pay off.

[00:18:35] I'm going to get another opportunity to do that. And next time I have that opportunity, I'm going to do it so much smarter and I'm going to do. This and this differently.

[00:19:43] I want feedback from everything I do when I lose, I want feedback. And when I want feedback I have to know why. And how to either replicate it or make sure it doesn't happen again.

[00:20:00] I try and remind myself of all the time is we are never done learning. There is, we have only tapped into the surface of our capabilities, both mentally and physically and emotionally and everything else. So we have got to keep pushing for improvements. And the only way to improve is to get steady feedback.

[00:23:34] Winning teams mean understanding one's role…Everybody has a role to play on an effective team.

[00:27:08] Look people in the eye, shake their hand, do the hard work, be prepared. Be a strong communicator, be a team player. Those are some of the core values that came out of athletics.

[00:29:28] When I first realized that being a part of a team always delivered better results for me in sports that's something I held onto my entire life.

[00:30:40] Think about the people that they're around to understand what their role is and how they can produce and be most effective in that role and how they can get others to perform at extraordinary levels in hopes of coming together to do something more significant.

[00:31:54] I encourage people to be a part of any winning organization that they can, and to understand that there's a time for them to step up and take the ball in their hands the entire time. And there's other times to recognize that they're a part of a team and find great satisfaction out of supporting the success of the people around them.

[00:33:28] You wouldn't believe what you can find out from somebody about their professional abilities when you see them play a sport.

[00:33:49] So first of all, did they show up? Secondly, did they talk a bigger game than they actually had? Do they play defense? Do they hustle? Do they pass the ball?

[00:34:46] You can learn so much about somebody in their character when you see them under the pressure of a sports event and that just has been a life lesson for me that has allowed me to surround myself with a bunch of really fantastic people.

[00:04:45] One is sacrifice and understanding that being on a team, you are working towards a collective goal, and sometimes that goal is not a hundred percent aligned with your personal goals.

[00:05:31] There's losses and you learn to deal with okay, get over it and can get back out there and keep working and keep trying.

[00:06:10] Be a good sportsman throughout my life.

[00:06:50] And I still try to do that in my daily life. That's all that really matters really is, how you present into the world and. And be a kind person.

[00:07:59] I try not to put people in the boxes and especially when I'm teaching because what excites me the most is just seeing originality and creativity come out of kids.

[00:08:38] I have noticed through the years that often kids that may be struggling in the academic world thrive in the three-dimensional world and art, and I'll speak up at meetings and say they might be struggling in your class, but not mine. They thrive when you put something three-dimensional in their hands.

[00:11:11] And we just decided okay, let's do this. We can do this. I don't think we had quite the idea of what a large enterprise it was going to be, but now we do, but we decided to just go in increments and start tackle what we could handle first.

[00:13:09] I can only just say always just having a goal in mind and practicing. We have to do the work to see the results.

[00:14:24] Give people the benefit of the doubt, not being quick to judge just in state open and open-minded, and open-hearted that, that is the biggest thing for me.

[00:20:07] Be in the moment. And what does that mean? The joy is in the moment. That's the biggest lesson for me of all. If you can be in the moment with who you are. You know where you're at, that's where the joy is.

[00:20:20] In my practice in the world is I've become more joyful in my day-to-day life by just being present. And I can handle my stress and anxiety is more by being in the moment.

[00:04:45] One is sacrifice and understanding that being on a team, you are working towards a collective goal, and sometimes that goal is not a hundred percent aligned with your personal goals.

[00:05:04] I would say I think there's something energizing about driving towards a goal with a group of people.

[00:05:24] For me, at least personally, more so than driving towards a goal on my own.

[00:07:16] You become a leader based on your previous body of work. It's not based on what someone thinks you can do.

[00:07:38] Sometimes leadership is not saying anything, but it's not quitting.

[00:08:16] It's running the last sprints and making sure that you're working hard and the rest of the team is working hard because you're working hard. That's infectious that makes everyone better.

[00:08:54] Gaining the respect of your peers allows you an incredible amount of influence either when it's in an athletic context or outside and in the real world.

[00:14:43] The moments when I was open to feedback and accepting of other ideas and just coming in with a learner's mindset. Ready to go work. We're the most productive.

[00:15:12] I look back at some of the things that I did and I had probably unrealistic expectations and confidence based on the work that I was putting in at times.

[00:15:33] If you continue to put in the extra time and dedicate all of your energy and focus on what you want to achieve, eventually the outcome will happen.

[00:16:55] You can go do the best you can and the outcome isn't what you wanted. That's acceptable. You have to do is go do the best you can. It's not acceptable not to leave it all out there. It's acceptable. If you leave it all out there and you don't get exactly what you were hoping for, there's nothing really more that you can do.

[00:18:57] I think part of being on a team is you have a number of other personalities that you need to understand how to work with. And you don't have to love everyone on the team. That's okay.

[00:19:23] You need to show up first and show, what the work looks like, show what it means to be a member of the team, and then hold everyone else accountable to the same standard.

[00:24:54] Part of being a kid is figuring out what to go do and not necessarily being told what to do all the time and being prescribed exactly what you need to go do.

[00:27:16] My career has not been linear at all. And it has been driven by, what I'm interested in and what I feel compelled to go spend my time on.

[00:29:23] I'm thinking about athletics for my kids as a tool to help them developing an improve themselves.

[00:29:56] Professionally, I always to have one foot outside my comfort zone. That's, what allows you to expand and improve and grow?

[00:06:56] Mary Oliver and it's the best. I always tell it everywhere I go. It's called instructions for living a life three lines instructions for living alone, pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.

[00:13:59] When you don't understand a population, there's always fear involved.

[00:15:18] A lot of people don't understand that one in five homeless in our country is a veteran.

[00:16:17] When we don't transform our pain, we always transmit our pain. But when we transform our pain, it becomes a place of leadership and influence in our own lives and the lives of others.

[00:23:06] Find a way to be the most valuable be the most valuable in whatever part of the team you can possibly be.

[00:26:47] Each kid is different. Each student is different. They all respond emotionally, psychologically in different kinds of ways.

[00:27:16] Athletics or teamwork teaches you bravery, but bravery is also, its flip side is vulnerability and you have to rely on other people.

  • There's no shortcut to success in my experience, what I've seen from the most elite athletes that I've played with, or the most successful business folks that I have had the pleasure of working with nobody's taking shortcuts. There's a certain discipline that is required to be successful.
  • The reason why I put my young kids in sports is because I want them to experience failure. I want them to experience success. And I want them to experience what it feels like Justin, to work hard and get the reward of working hard.
  • That is the nature of life is learning how to fail and we want to fail. We want to fail quickly and learn fast.
  • The skill sets that you acquire working and sports certainly in team sports apply very nicely when you have to go into a business environment and solve some problems.
  • Good leaders are the ones that can say, Hey guys, this is on me.
  • I made the mistake here, but this is what we're going to do to solve it.
  • When you're young, you're insecure. And so you're blaming, you're making excuses when you get older, it's no, that's on me. Here's why. And here's how we're not going to let that happen again.
  • We're trying to build trust. With the people that are working with us, the people that are working for us and the people that are investing with us.
  • The safest thing I could have done was bet on myself. So what I've done my whole life.
  • And that's what sports will give you the confidence to do.
  • Because what it's about is relationships, right? Like we're all looking for this sense of community.
  • You've been on the pursuit of excellence for your entire career. So go find something that interests you and take that same approach.
  • What do you care about and how are you investing in that? Cause that matched.

[00:08:31] Ask that question. What made me good at what I did? What I learned was what made me a good soccer player made me a good friend, it continues to make me a good wife. What makes me a good daughter? What makes me good mental performance coach and just continuously fill in the blank. And so, what are those constants?

[00:09:34] The outcome of what you do, isn't who you are.

[00:10:19] Number one is how to be a good teammate, how to show up for others, how to keep your word and to be reliable. How to make people around you look good. How to lift them up.

[00:11:07] Mistakes are a part of the process that failing is a form of progress and that, if you're constantly making the same mistake, you're not learning, but if you're never making new mistakes, you’re not pushing yourself outside your comfort zone…be brave enough to suck at something new.

[00:11:38] You can't be comfortable and grow at the same time. And then I think the other piece is that small things add up to big ones and consistency is greater than intensity.

[00:17:16] This is what I teach and how the hell am I going to be the best version of myself and the best coach that I can be if I'm not willing to take my own advice.

[00:19:27] Half the battle is sticking with it long enough to see results. And the truth is most aren't willing to stick it out as long as it requires…two things, people underestimate the most how hard it's going to be and how long it's going to take.

[00:20:13] You're not going to be very good at it and it's going to take repetition to get better.

[00:22:55] Our identity equals our belief plus actions.

[00:24:29] He decided who he wanted to be. And then he supported it with every action. And every time he acted within that belief within that identity and improved and supported that belief that he had of himself.

[00:27:07] When you are that low. You only have two options to continue in that direction or adapt to something new… what failure does.

[00:27:36] Is it leaves the door open to learn something new. And what we know is growth. Isn't an option in comfort.

[00:30:42] There's power in thinking opposite.

[00:31:10] There is power when we challenge our current way of thinking. How has failure helped you? Because the very failure, your experiencing could be the very thing that teaches you the lesson you needed to learn to get to that next level, to get to that next point.

[00:34:16] If you don't have a why that is greater than the punches, you're about to take, you're going to fall to them every time.

[00:36:37] A lot of times we go into these goals and we think about all the things that we're going to get on the other side.

[00:36:49] But we forget to think about all the obstacles and things that are going to be required of us to get through, to continue.

[00:40:53] You want to develop a relationship that can bear the weight of truth.

[00:43:49] When you sign up to do something great, you sign up for all that's required.

[00:43:58] It's going to be difficult. And so, prepare yourself. Are you willing to adhere to the lifestyle that is required to achieve your goal? That's really important.

[00:44:34] Be willing to be flexible in your approach, but be committed to the thing that you really want. And I guess the question is how bad do you want it?

  • It was like one of the first times that someone reached into my life, and just blessed it. And he gave me two things that I've used for the rest of my life. One was, you have to be involved in this community. You've got to be involved. And I don't care what it is, but you have to get involved in something after school, so that you were around other kids, and you were a part of this community. And the other thing that he said to me, which is really beautiful, was I'm going to set goals for your life. And the first one I want you to set is a GPA level that you can attain, and you start reaching to.
  • I didn't know anybody. And all of a sudden, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are coming up after the play. And they're like, "Dude, that was good, you were good." And all of a sudden, I felt like I belonged into something and found my purpose.
  • When I'm physically fit, and when I'm in my body, I'm a better actor.
  • I think a lot of times in life, we have expectations, we have hopes, and we have wants. We want to get something, we want to go somewhere, or we want to be something. And we are rejected. And I think that we have two ways to look at that. We can look at that, like its failure. And it's a personal reflection on who we are and our character and our abilities. And we can start acting are thinking with a failure mindset. We're like, "Man, I'm just a failure." That was a No. That was a no. Or, to me, there's a way to look at things that would otherwise be considered failures, and pivot and make them opportunities where you're like, Okay, that didn't work out. But I did meet this person. And I now have this story. And now I do have this experience, and how can I parlay that into something else? So turning your nos into yeses is something that I've had to do my whole life.
  • I went on 110 auditions in the first year of being a professional actor, and got rejected on 110 job interviews. I did not get a job for a year of my life.
  • "Dude, if you can do a marathon, you can do anything."
  • if I have a plan B, that's what I'll end up doing.
  • People are either going to speak blessings into your life, or they're going to speak curses in your life. And if you're around people who are telling you that you can't, and that you won't, and that you're not, those are curses.
  • when you are on a team, even this man, the book that we just wrote, it was a collaboration. So my writer and I, you have to know how to give and take.
  • You got to see what it's like to be on a team.
  • The ability to be leaders, but also know when to follow. So followship is just as important as leadership and knowing what your job is and then do it with excellence and I mean anything you set your mind to If you can keep those things in mind, know your job and know how to do it really well, then you might rise to the top,
  • How do you learn to lead, to follow, to be there for somebody else, rather than putting yourself at the center of every equation?
  • What it means to leave a legacy with your life and to live a purpose led life.
  • Everybody has a story to tell.
  • The three lessons of acting to be a great actor, know what you're saying, know why you're saying it, and then breathe.
  • you're gonna run into everybody on the way up, that you're gonna see on the way down.
  • If you treat everybody like they're the president, you're going to be in good standing.
  • the best idea wins.
  • I see so many people who are greedy for credit. And if you can just let that go. And stop caring about who gets the credit, and just allow the best idea to win, you're gonna have an incredible team, you're gonna have an incredible project, and an incredible life.
  • If you can live your life, that gives people a taste to heaven, whatever that is to you, then you're doing something right, which is basically if you can love people, and encourage people and live with an authenticity that shows people what eternity could be like, you're winning. You're just winning.

[00:08:32] All I knew was work, compete, believe. Rinse, wash, repeat and do it again.

[00:08:53] Sales lends itself to athletics quite a bit. You're going to be told no, a lot more than you're going to be told yes.

[00:09:28] I did know how to grind. I was not afraid of hard work. I was not afraid to competing.

[00:10:24] I think that belief and that grit and that toughness and just competing is so critical, and I got that from sports, from athletics, from my journey.

[00:12:33] I think some people look at stubborn in a bad way. Stubborn is not always bad.

[00:13:33] I did it because I wanted to do it.

[00:15:48] You have some adversity; you don't play much. And then you've got to just figure out how important it is to you, and then you double down on that.

[00:18:04] I do not have all the answers I don't, but my mindset is like, Hey, we're just going to figure this out; weather this.

[00:19:02] It's a mindset to just constantly keep going. And you have two choices, you can figure it out and keep moving or you can quit, and quit a strong word. And there's varying degrees of quit, but you can't feel sorry for yourself.

[00:19:41] Continue to chop wood, as you like to say, and show up and work hard and see where it takes you versus using those adverse experiences as reason to tap out.

[00:22:06] I think you have that bond and you pull together and there's a level of respect because guys understand the work it takes to carry the water at that level.

[00:22:25] Like-minded people I've found in my life kind of gravitate to each other.

[00:23:34] Best thing you can do is go learn about sales.

[00:25:35] I just spent more hours than anybody working and seeking out competition.

[00:26:35] If you got to talk to 50 people to get a yes, I'm going to talk to a hundred so I can get two yeses. Whatever it's going to take.

[00:27:23] I like to be in a simple business where hard work, and grit would prevail.

[00:30:30] I think leadership is crucial and communication is crucial.

[00:31:28] You've got to have trust the people you're leading. They've got to trust you. Bottom line.

[00:31:46] You've got to have ability to communicate and I think what leaders do is they bring people together for a common cause and they're able to align people's personal goals and expectations aspirations, et cetera, with the company's goals or with the team's goals.

[00:32:52] A bigger part of leadership is, honoring those mentors and coaches and teammates and friends you've had, that have shaped your experience in being able to give back in that way.

[00:33:43] I don't really even like the word negative. There's challenging things that have happened.

[00:34:00] You can uplift people with your words, but then they've got to be backed up by your actions.

[00:34:36] You've got to understand the people you're leading, what their goals and aspirations are and what they want.

[00:35:24] You've got to understand that you've got to have, compassion for where the other person's coming from.

[00:38:15] I tried to learn every day and from everything.

[00:39:28] Our industry is hard. It can be a great job for people that are wired the right way for it, but it's hard and you are going to run up against.

[00:44:03] You always have control your response. Cause you want to have a vision of what that outcome is.

[00:44:24] I'm about discipline. I'm about treating others the right way. I'm about competing.

[00:45:10] There are things every day, that you don't want to do that you should do, can you make yourself do them? Discipline. Every day there are things that you shouldn't do that you really want to do, can you make yourself not do them?

[00:46:20] If your habits and actions are not in line with your goals and your dreams, change your habits and actions or change your goals and your dreams.

[00:46:37] People can dream and dream big and that's great, and there's nothing wrong with that, but there's really only a select few who are going to execute no matter what.

[00:50:08] So if you're not educating yourself and you are stuck in a pattern because it's the habit that we learned when we were kids, is that serving. And so, I think that's a great example of you have to constantly re-examine your beliefs in order to either strengthen them or find new perspectives that have come out since you developed them and so great answer.

[00:51:16] I'm not afraid of working.

[00:53:27] You can always improve your situation in business and sports and coaching or whatever. You can always get better.

[00:53:48] You want to be a little better? Hey, you're not playing as much as you want on your youth team. Maybe go have a conversation with the coach and see what you can do to get better.

[00:01:10] In what way has your background with athletics or in athletics helped shape your professional journey?

[00:01:30] Sports is always there. It's always a way to connect.

[00:02:02] the competitive spirit…Knowing that there's something bigger than you, it's your team and the goals of your team are much more important.

[00:03:36] student-athlete always, that ordering principle is very important.

[00:05:35] Sports was vehicle to be in the seat to be inspired by professors.

[00:06:22] The need for passion.

[00:06:43]Work = practice.

[00:07:28] Control the controllables

[00:08:10] Indigent defense.

[00:08:47] You gotta be able to fight, like where are you someone who could be there in the fourth quarter? Like that's something that comes back from sports.

[00:09:25] How do you still get up every day and show up when you're having a tough go of it?

[00:11:04] Different Opportunities for mom and me.

[00:13:06]You got to be a Swiss army knife…in today's workforce.

[00:13:37] How can you be ready to be a positive impact on the game, a positive impact for your employers?

[00:14:07] I need to be someone who's going to really carry a heavy load or maybe what's needed is for me to shrink my head, realize that there's something bigger than me.

[00:14:33] Without the team, we're increasingly individualistic.

[00:14:56] Sports are a vehicle to teach leadership. And for you to learn, to be part of something bigger than yourself.

[00:15:49] I'll very briefly explain this phenomenon in New York city, the New York city day…

[00:16:47] "Next play." His "Next play. Wipe that. Next play." Because if you let any negativity from your past influence your future, no one impacted that no one brought that negativity, but you. Why?

[00:20:10] Examples of specifics along your career where you can point to things like that where disciplined mattered, preparation mattered, or you had to know the rules, and live within them or negative things were going to happen?

[00:20:26] Tim Duncan face.

[00:20:48] A judge's discretion...

[00:22:30] Many fail repeats.

[00:24:35] I really do want the respect of my opponent.

[00:25:17] What's on the other side could very well be someone that's on your team, whether that's employment, you switched jobs, something happens in the world where all of a sudden, they're next to you. They're no longer across from you.

[00:26:09] We no longer live in a wave at your neighbor society, and especially in a lot of metropolitan areas.

[00:26:47] Basketball was the universal language was to allow me to speak to people. That a lot of times there's, there may not be anything else that will relate us.

[00:28:48]Today's society…It's I based. My success is my own. Very rarely I think, is it shared or is my efforts to achieve a success that affects someone beyond me or my immediate family?

[00:30:33] It's gotta be we first. And if we're put on a task and I've played team sports and I've experienced that and you haven't. We might have different goals. My goal might be for you and I to achieve A, your goal might be for you and not me to achieve B because a is for we and B is for you. So, if we're working for two separate things, we might as well not be on the same team because we're not even going in the same direction.

[00:31:00] One is for me; one is for we.

[00:31:22] Not everyone can be a star, but you star, you can star in your role.

[00:32:39] It's all about we.

[00:34:24] I didn't have to be too smart or too compassionate, cause I'm not either of those, to realize that things aren't right for this group of people….You don't, you also don't have to be smart or compassionate to see, how black people in this country are treated so disparagingly and the things that they face is it wouldn't be fair to call it a hurdle; It's a mountain that has been 400 years long.

[00:37:51] If I'm trying as hard as I and…The only thing I didn't get was affirmation….I still got all the progression and personal success.

[00:38:28] Affirmation is not handed out that much in adult life.

[00:38:51] As soon as you can keep working towards your own personal growth and you don't need the affirmation because the real success was in the gains you made. You're perfect.
