Ambition is defined as “an intense drive for success or power; a desire to achieve honor, wealth or fame.” To be ambitious, in the worldly sense, is essentially to be determined to have more than your neighbor. Its motto is “he with the most toys wins”; ambition strives to be number one. However, in the Bible, the word ambition takes on a whole new dimension.

Luke 5:1-11

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

Peter is called

[1] On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, [2] and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. [3] Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. [4] And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” [5] And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” [6] And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. [7] They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. [8] But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” [9] For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, [10] and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” [11] And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

[1] But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. [2] I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, [3] for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?

John 1:35-41 NIV

“The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).”

The second letter to Timothy offers a picture of Paul at the end of his ministry, just before his death. Certain personal details in the letter reveal a man settling his accounts and preparing for the inevitable. At the close of the letter, Paul mentioned a significant number of people—some who had wronged him and others who had served faithfully alongside him (2 Timothy 4:9–21). It is as if Paul were giving Timothy a “state of the church” address, updating Timothy on the current state of their acquaintances and friends so that the young pastor could carry on after Paul’s departure.

How do I obtain Joy? Romans 15:13

Warren Wiersbe defines joy as “that inward peace and sufficiency that is not affected by outward circumstances.”

When we are filled with peace and joy, life is as good as it gets. Even the hard times are endurable with peace and joy. Without peace and joy, even the best of times are bad. We can only enjoy true peace and joy when we trust in God. We have to know that there is a loving Creator who is big enough and gracious enough to get us through the rocky roads of life. We might experience temporary times of joy due to worldly pleasures, but the only lasting peace and joy come from trusting a Sovereign God. —Dr. Sam Smith

Leading your church through a cultural shift is a long-term process.  Only adding a new ministry, making a change to an existing ministry, or giving your church a new name is not a surefire way to change your church’s culture. These types of efforts are merely external and do not necessarily lead to internal changes.  If you want to lead your church through a cultural change,… you want to encourage your church to become more evangelistic, then you need to prepare yourself for purposeful work over time.

The Bible talks about “spiritual maturity” and “growing up” in Christ. What does this mean?  Let’s take our spiritual temperature. God tells us we can make steps forward in our relationship with Him, and is always calling us closer, deeper into His ways. In fact, growing closer to the Lord is the most important task in your life. More important than reaching your dreams or even fulfilling your calling.

13Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,16having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

The struggles of this year have led to friendships ending, churches dividing and much more turmoil. As a nation and the Church, we are hurting, and everyone is feeling the consequences of strife from the Covid Virus and all the political bickering. It is impossible to serve God to the best of our abilities while we are divided from each other. When we are caught up in our quarrels, it distracts from our true purpose of seeking first the Kingdom of God.  As we pursue godliness and a closer relationship with the Lord, one of the chief ways we can begin achieving both is by helping the Christian community unite.  Here are a few ways to promote unity among our fellow Believers and help our churches come together.

We tend to think of the fruit of the Spirit as a list of good Christian virtues to adopt as moral Christian living instead of seeing it as our invitation to be in-dwelt by the Spirit of Christ and to be made more like him as a result.
