Samuel Williams, Jr. Selah is a dynamic youth gospelchoir with members ranging in ages 5- to 18-years-old. The ministry was formed (circa 2002) with the humble number of 6 members, under the vision to establisha choir at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Chicago, IL, through which youth could share in the rich experience of leading worship and praise. Shortly after it’s founding, Julie Welborn (then Youth Minister) approached Samuel Williams, Jr., an Alumnus of Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago, to help lead the fledgling choir. After accepting the position of Team Leader/Director of Selah, Sam realized that in order to have a choir that operated in excellence, he had to change the originally set rehearsal schedule from twice a month to every week. •Sam then recruited Jacinta Warnie, a Princeton Graduate, Former Director of the Princeton UniversityGospel Ensemble and Multiple Choir Alumna as a Co-Team Leader to support the group. Sam also extended the time of rehearsals from one hour to between one and one half to two hours weekly. With the coupling of consistent caring leadership, grounding in the Word of God, and disciplined rehearsals, the group began to grow in number, in vocal strength, and most importantly, spiritually. •Selah quickly began to be recognized across the city of Chicago for their strong vocals, dynamic energetic performances, joyous hearts and sweet spirits. Particularly in this perilous time when so much negative light is cast upon youth, Selah began to be infectious in a great and awesome way! They have performed and shared theirministry with artists and at venues including, but not limited to: • Chance the Rapper (Featured on Chance the Rapper’s Twitter Site) • CSO (Chicago SymphonyOrchestra) • Michelle Williams (Formerly of Destiny’s Child) • Jennifer Hudson • Jazz Artists Dave Koz & Jonathan Butler and many others.•The Group is now 35-40 members strong and has released their first self-titled CD Project: Sam Williams &Selah St. Sabina Youth Choir of Chicago! •Please send me an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. Rev. Stef formed the acclaimed choir, Jubilation, in 1998 at the request of New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) CEO Larry Goldman and Newark Councilman/Assemblyman Donald K. Tucker. She has led the choir in numerous performances nationally and internationally since that time.

Jubilation’s first album “Launch Out Project” was released in 2009 followed by o Happy Day in 2010; 2013 Jubilation Christmas; 2018 It’s All about You and in 2022 Worship Him. Jubilation won a Grammy after being featured with Latifah on the 2009 compilation album, Oh Happy Day: An All-Star Music Celebration, and also sang behind her at the 2010 Super Bowl.

Jubilation’s reputation as New Jersey’s most decorated community choir dates to 1999, when Minatee, known to all as Rev. Stef, auditioned more than 300 singers from the tristate area for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at NJPAC. She selected 120 from that group, including Queen Latifah’s mother, Rita Owens. The group went on to sing that year with Shirley Caesar, another gospel giant. In 2002, Jubilation was tapped as the choir on Ray Charles Celebrates: A Gospel Christmas Album. In 2010, the choir earned a Grammy with Latifah and other artists for a track on the compilation album Oh Happy Day. This episode tells a bit of Malaco Record Label's history and it's significance in the genre of Black Gospel Music.  The company started in the 1960's focused on The Southern soul sounds featuring artists who were generating a crowd that did not necessarily hit the top radio stations or fan base.  Many of the early artists were soul singers and blues singers it wasn't until Misty Blue came out and hit the charts hard then garnering the attention of this small town independent record label.  As a matter of fact that one song is said to prevent the label from going into bankruptcy.

In the 1970's the owners decided to lean into the Black gospel genere signing several quartet groups to their label, however the label's largest signing choir did not come on until the mid to late 1980's and became the label's largest selling group to date.  And that group was none other than The Mississippi Mass Choir (Organized by the Late Frank Williams of The Williams Brothers).

Honoring the memory of James C. Chambers, the founder, organizer, executive director and producer of the Ecclesiastes Community Choir of Chicago in 1971. The choir released their first album 1979 where you could hear the power of the choir and James’ building on vocal excellence.

James C. Chambers had a design and a method all his own and with every opportunity he thrived to give God his Best and stressed that others around him did so as well. James was a true visionary and made those around him see where he lead and directed. With each year, each concert, each recording and each anniversary; James sought ways to get the Best out of his choir; The Ecclesiastes Community Choir of Chicago Illinois. ECC presented 5 recordings during the late 1970's and into the early to mid 1990's. During that time James and ECC made several transitions in music and in vocal strengths. Following each annual event ECC had, James would review the concert or anniversary to see where he could improve.

James C. Chambers was the organizer and founder of the Ecclesiastes Community Choir; in 1988 he organized and was founder of the ECC Music Workshop (a week long seminar) culminating with the Music Workshop Choir at the end to have a recording session. In 1990 the choir's name was changed to The Chicago Mass Choir and released their first album in 1991.

Billboard magazine has been around for over 100 years beginning in 1894.  Of course years and time changed the magazine as it changed hands many times since its beginning.  After one of the original founders William Donaldson died in 1952 the entertainment magazine went to his children and his co founder's James Hennegan's children; they held it until sold to private investors in 1985.

This is where my "Gospel" charting research landed to April 6, 1985 where a "Top SPIRITUAL Albums" chart yielded the top 40 albums by Black/African American artists were listed.

This show not only highlights the Top 10, but includes short clips of songs found on the albums.  With the number 1 Top Spiritual Album by Vanessa Bell Armstrong entitled Chosen.  You will also find an album which shown to have been on the charts for 97 weeks!

Hope you enjoy this show.  Please leave comments and subscribe to get the latest episode update notification.

ECC MUSIC WORKSHOP was a vision James C. Chambers had to unite choirs, singers, groups, directors, song writers and musicians across Chicago, Illinois.  In 1988 that vision went into action.  At the first Workshop there were over 200 delegates who attended and participated.  The vision James had was to have contributions from around the city and to conduct various classes, trainings and collaborations.  On this show there are excerpts of the first workshop culmination.  Since the choir had rehearsals each evening following the classes and trainings the decision was to organize material to record.  Although the 1988 Mass Choir was recorded, the recording did not get released as anticipated. There was exceptional music submitted by songwriters to name a few , William Hamilton, Lonnie Hunter, Bishop J.C. White (of Connecticut), Amaaris Palmore, Abe Cooke, Brenda Joyce Moore.  The musical staff was phenomenal which included Mark Taylor, Anthony Harmon, David Brock, Tyrone Dickerson, Bryant Jones, Cameron Jarmon, Wayne Barnett, Leslie Sanders, Carlos Patterson, William Hamilton.  The directorial staff included James C. Chambers, Bryant Jones, Steven "Puff" Jones, Lonnie Hunter, Abe Cooke & Brenda Joyce Moore. If you have any questions or comments about this episode, please send an email: letstalk2gmg@gmail.com

Tribute show of "OH HAPPY DAY"!

  • This song was a written hymn in the 18th century Words: Phillip Doddridge and Music by: Edward F. Rimbault.
  • In the 19th century it was revived with a "Gospel" Vibe which hit the secular charts; by accident.
  • Edwin Hawkins gave this song a boast that (I'm sure) he had no idea it would take off as it did, and also cause controversy in the church.
  • Listen as different versions of the song made their mark and the impact the 1968 release revolutionized the World.
