Birthday Suit Christians, Gen. 3:6-24
Two things entered our hearts at the fall that affected our ability to trust and obey God:
1 – Sin;
2 – Brokenness (i.e., nakedness, shame)
However, right there at the fall God began to counsel Adam and Eve (and us). He provided a sacrifice which would cover us. What we find is that when we come to the Lord in our nakedness, he does not expose us or humiliate us, he clothes us. The idea of nakedness (vulnerability) has become a traumatic experience for most of us because of the fall. That’s Satan’s manipulation, but God created us to be loved and to be known. We typically settle for receiving God’s love, but we hide from being fully known. This is true with God and it is true with each other. So, we try to control the narrative of how others perceive us – we try to cover ourselves with figs (Gen. 3:7), but the Lord has provided a better covering for us (Gen. 3:21). God says we can put on Christ (Romans 13:14), and he clothes us in righteousness (Psalm 132:9). There is no shame, but freedom in the Lord.
Often God answers the questions of our hearts with questions of his own. Once we can be vulnerable enough (naked before God) to answer back to him the things he already knows, it’s a sign that healing is on the way for us.
Let’s pray that our church community is a safe place for us to be “naked” before one another and ultimately before God.

Shame, Genesis 2:24-3:13
“If you don’t pay me, I will expose you.” Or “If you don’t do exactly what I say, I will post that video of you.” This blackmail tactic is similar to how Satan manipulates us with shame: “If you try to launch a ministry, I will tell the church who you really are.” He reminds us of our former sinful selves, taunts us, and makes us prisoners of our shame. We hide and become paralyzed.
Adam and Eve went from pure and genuine communion with God to hiding in the very Garden he created for them. But the promise of the Lord is that, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame” (Romans 10:11). Also, we are commanded to put to death the old (shameful) self and put on the new. Paul says, “For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). So, imagine Jesus taking our shame so that we don’t have to hide FROM him; but we are made new and hidden IN him. Praise the Lord for his goodness!

Moses Series: Putting God on Trial, Exodus 17:1–6
Believe or not, there are actual lawsuits on record where people have tried to sue God. The first one I heard about was from Ernie Chambers, a Senator from Nebraska. Just like the others, he cited God as being negligent because of the evil, suffering, and destruction taking place all across the world he created. The judge threw out the case saying God could not be properly notified of the case since he has no home address.
It sounds absurd that anyone would try to take God to trial, but it is a real condition of the (sinful) human heart. We have a tendency to blame and accuse God. That’s exactly what we see with the Israelites. That place of quarreling with Moses and grumbling against him was really them accusing God (17:2-3). Remarkably, God sees this and he does not strike the people, condemn them, or even hide from the legal process. He commands Moses to set up court – gather the elders and take up the staff (i.e., the rod of authority). We find here God’s incredible patience and willingness to suffer long with our wickedness (see 2 Peter 3:9). Moses strikes the rock and water flows forth for the people to drink (17:5-6). Ultimately, we get a heart-wrenching revelation from this in that Jesus is the Rock that was struck for our offenses against God. Woah!
We now have water to drink; that is, a new life to nourish and sustain us in Christ. So, the next time we hear of a foolish court case against God, you can post the sermon link from this weekend and attach these notes for reflection:
God’s long-suffering nature
Instead of God casting off and rejecting sinners, he engages with them and meets their needs.
God’s Patience
The sinful mind loses patience with God (i.e., accuses him). The heavenly perspective causes us to focus on God’s patience with us.
God’s faithfulness; our forgetfulness
Because of sin we often forget about God’s goodness to us, even if it was recent. Similarly, we tend to harp on the hard times in our walk, even if they happened long ago.
Arguing with God, Exodus 4:1-14
God is calling you to something and asking you to take a step of faith, but there is a reluctance and an insecurity in you. The question that stood out to me this week was:
Do I have complete reverence and trust in God in all things? All things? ALL THINGS?!
We reviewed incredible gospel truths from Philippians to include Phil. 1:6 and 2:13 which both point us to the reality that, as Christians, God is powerfully working through us. So, once we can take that incredible news to heart, we can share in Paul’s proclamation that, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” (Phil. 4:13). But why do so many of us miss that? Why do we not rest in it? The key is that we are to abide in him – that is an active (not passive) commitment. We are to continually devote ourselves to pursuing him. Here it is in our final verse from Philippians: “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection…” (3:10). I can admit that there have been seasons where I was more focused on uncovering his power than his person. First and foremost, we must know Christ.
So, the stories and illustrations of the Old Testament (i.e., Moses) beautifully connect to the principles and lessons of the New Testament (i.e., teaching to the Philippians) to give us a complete understanding; think left brain/right brain. The outcome is a revelation of God’s work within us, and our enduring call to know him and his amazing power.
Amen.

Have You Pitched Your Tent?
My first year in college, I learned about a group on campus called the Atheist Agenda. They had set up a table in one of the common areas and were provoking Christians by offering students sexually explicit magazines and DVDs in exchange for Bibles. They called the exchange “Smut for Smut.” I was walking to class with a friend who professed to be a Christian and I remember him saying, “Oh no they didn’t!” There was a righteous anger in him to fight against that sexual perversion and that agenda to bring revival on campus. A couple weeks later, he called me at 11:00 pm to ask for a ride to a girls’ apartment. There was a demand for revival “out there,” but he couldn’t see that his own heart was growing cold.
We heard a message this Sunday that calls each of us to a personal revival with the Lord. We may not struggle in the same way my friend did, but all of us have seasons where we need to be mindful of tending the fire of our hearts. Sometimes our personal sin struggles are the issue. At other times, the lawlessness of the culture causes our love to grow cold (Matt. 24:12). In Exodus 33, Moses was dealing with a rebellious Israel, but the word says, he would “take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp…” (33:7). He became an example for others and for us. Instead of letting his love cool off under all the oppression, he would steal away and cry out to God saying, “Please show me your glory” (33:18).
What is a personal revival?
A conscious sense of God’s presence in your life.
The mountains (i.e., of anxiety, fear, etc.) melt in God’s presence (see Isaiah 64:1).
Like Moses, we must be willing to engage with God on his terms and wait on God (See Phil. 4:6-8).
How do you know you’re in personal revival? How do we get personal revival in our lives? (Or how does God bring it about?) Your spiritual life is a burning fire that must be fed continually. Pitch your tent in faith. God may not always change the circumstances, but he will change you.
Be encouraged!

Prophet, Priest, and King, Isaiah 61:1-4; 1 Peter 2:9
If you get Jesus right, you get everything else right. If you get Jesus wrong… it doesn’t matter what else you get right.
Yesterday we reviewed Isaiah 61:1-4 to capture a snippet of how Jesus’ life and ministry are described. Since we are the body of Christ, he equips us to fulfill his earthly ministry as a representation of him. So, it is useful for us to pause occasionally and consider how God has made us and for what purpose in the body. The passage in Isaiah can be summarized as three facets of Jesus’ ministry: Prophet (v. 1), Priest (vv. 2-3), and King (v. 4). Jesus perfectly fulfills all three in one. We each serve as members of His body, and we typically favor one of the three. Like a diamond, we are crafted and chiseled in specific ways that God’s light might reflect from within us.
Why is this important? To know what we carry so we will faithfully bring it to the others and the world. Also to help us appreciate the body of Christ (i.e., empowering each other’s uniqueness).
The Prophet:
The Priest
The King:
Some pastors and theologians call Romans 8 the greatest passage in all of Scripture. We could debate that, but we can at least agree that you won’t find better news than the pronouncement that “There is therefore now no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus” (8:1). Jesus carried our condemnation on himself so that God could work out the righteous requirements of the law in us. I wish I could find words to explain the value of this. I guess the best we can do is translate that excitement into worship for the rest of eternity!
So, the Father loves us and sends his Son. The Son loves us and lays down his life for us. The Son rises from death and sends the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit loves us and empowers our faith.
The rest of Romans 8 gives us 5 Promises from the Holy Spirit for us:
If we set our minds on these promises of the Holy Spirit, we will be able to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is what David did in Psalm 103:1-5… “forget not all His benefits…” We can effectively walk in the Spirit as we set our minds on the work of the Spirit. Be encouraged!

Moses Series Pt II: Moses, the Meekest Man on Earth
“Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth” (Num. 12:3).
Years ago, I was helping someone get ready for a leadership interview. As we were talking, he made a comment along the lines of, “I’m just so humble that people don’t always know what to do with me.” I tried to lovingly help him understand that announcing your humility pretty much cancels any perception of you being humble. (This is especially true when you have a reputation of being toxic and divisive in the workplace).
So, how does Moses get away with writing this about himself in the book of Numbers? Granted, the Holy Spirit was really the author, but it was Moses’ hand that jotted this down. What do we do with that?
We learned that Moses had a profound spiritual encounter that gave him a right view of God and therefore, a balanced view of self. So, his meekness was a perfect blend of boldness and confidence with humility and gentleness.
How did this come about?
God is perfectly loving and merciful AND at the same time, perfectly holy being described as a “fury of fire” against the wicked (Heb. 10:27). We see God’s mercy in that the names of his people are carved into the palms of his hands (Isaiah 49:16). Yet, it is also terrifying to fall into those same hands if you are in rebellion against him (Heb. 10:31).
The detours and the encounter allow us to see God as Moses did, creating MEEKNESS in each of us. This is the linchpin for unity in God’s house, and godly unity is the linchpin for real kingdom impact.
Moses, the man who couldn’t talk good… Pt. 1 (Exodus 2:1-8)
It was sweet on Sunday to think about the role of moms and how their faith helps to shape the lives of some of God’s greatest leaders. See Jochebed, Naomi, Ruth, Mary… and many others. In Exo. 2:2, Moses’ mom saw that “he was a fine child.” There was something special in him so she hid him away. We learned Sunday that prophetic vision over our children comes from cherishing and nurturing God’s divine promise. (Our) Faith nurtured by (God’s) Promise = Prophetic Vision.
It can be discouraging to see Satan’s edict over the culture, and wonder how we will ever overcome. He is throwing babies into the Nile (i.e., throwing them into his stream of filth) before they ever get a chance to find themselves. But Moses’ mom teaches us that we are not to cower under Satan’s ”counterfeit covenant” over us. We cling to God’s Covenant which speaks a better promise that:
So, King Jesus is sitting on his throne with a rainbow over his head, indicating that he will never forget the promises he made to us. We only lose prophetic vision for our families when we let the battles dry up our communion with God (i.e., we stop praying and believing). Also, we have to be willing to consecrate ourselves unto God.
Be encouraged!

The Weight of Worship, James 1:27-2:7
We learned yesterday that the word “religion” ultimately means “worship.” Remember that James’ letter is written to the people of God “in the Dispersion” (James 1:1). In other words, he’s writing to believers scattered across the regions. I can imagine them saying, “What is our religion now if we can’t get to the Temple?” Or, “I have the rabbi’s teachings memorized – I’m good.” His direction to them is that you are deceived if you think simply hearing the word is sufficient. You must be doers of the word (1:22), and this is not dependent on having a building. He says, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world” (1:27). So, the Temple was simply an instrument to stir up our awe of God; it was to help us encounter God’s glory.
Key things to Remember:
We heard yesterday that God’s glory is both desirable and dangerous. Desirable because we are people in pursuit of glory. (We just need to pursue his and not ours). Dangerous because we cannot contain his wonder and his weightiness. Lastly, the lies of the enemy have blinded us to the glory of God, but if we can see it again, it becomes the breakthrough we have been looking for. Take heart – the Lord is silencing the accuser!
Tribulation, Kingdom, and Patience
Rev. 12:13-17
I have noticed that a lot of sermons and discussions on Revelation are mostly about people desperately trying to figure out for sure if God is going to yank Christians out of here before the intense suffering starts. It’s not an excitement about our Lord coming back. It’s more of, “yeah, I don’t want to suffer so get me up out of here.” But that’s not what we heard this Sunday. We focused on themes like this: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Tribulation: So, we understand tribulation, not just as the pronounced persecution of the end times, but as being under stress, strain, grief, etc. for an extended time in our Christian life. The suffering is not for nothing. We understand that it all produces what we have been praying for as a church.
Kingdom: We are seeing God’s unrestricted rule (i.e., his kingdom) come to light. It is his beauty, his power, his radiance on display. Remember, “strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22).
Patience: Here we discussed endurance; staying under something. We will often feel pressure on all sides, but we “stay under” and wait on the Lord. Sometimes, God protects and prepares us by bringing us into a wilderness. He is not against us. He is working it out for our good (consider the lady in Rev. 12).
There is more to this walk than just avoiding trouble or dodging persecution. May the Lord himself be our great and exceeding reward!

Sermon Recap
I encourage you to reflect and pray on what we heard. “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Rom. 8:15).
Remember: the Holy Spirit’s mission towards us is first to make us spiritually alive and to keep us from being slaves to fear. The Holy Spirit will never motivate us through a bondage of fear (i.e., “you better obey or else”). He also sets us free from the sin that robs our joy, and destroys our relationship with God and each other. He does not paralyze us with a spirit of fear, but motivates us through a revelation of his incredible love. Even being a moral person (without the gospel) is a fear-driven exercise. Be clear, God definitely warns us, corrects us, and disciplines us to lead us to repentance, but the aim is always a revelation of the gospel.
To summarize, through the Spirit we have:
