While traveling to Las Vegas with the Wedo team, David had the opportunity to interview musician, singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and philanthropist Aloe Blacc.
Aloe needs less introduction than most of our Wedotalk guests. David and Aloe talk about Aloe’s music career and the songs he has produced, the most famous of which are “I Need a Dollar” and “The Man”; but the conversation also turns to Aloe’s early life in Southern California as the son of immigrants from Panama, his education and his corporate work, before dedicating himself full time to his music career.
David and Aloe also talk about the social messages in some of his songs, such as the inspirational lyrics in “Together Is Better Thank One”; and also, the mental health challenges facing performers in a high-profile entertainment world.
In addition to being a well renowned musician, Aloe is also very actively involved in philanthropy, and specifically in Malaria no More, a charity whose mission is to end malaria deaths through engaging leaders, rallying the public and delivering life-saving tools and education across the African Continent.

Overcoming Setbacks With A Positive Mindset | Wedotalk with David Jaques and Special Guest - Daniel MacQueen
On September 20, 2022 David interviewed Dan MacQueen from Vancouver, Canada. In his mid-twenties, Dan was a recent graduate of a master’s degree in sustainability and was working for a technology company in London. He sought medical help when suffering from headaches, and distorted vision and was diagnosed with a non-cancerous cyst on his brain. During surgery, he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and was severely incapacitated and in a coma for several weeks. On the road to recovery, he was in and out of consciousness before moving to a rehabilitation center for several more months. Slowly, he re-learned how to walk, talk and smile again; but about one year after his initial surgery, he needed a second brain surgery to unblock a shunt, which set him back another couple of months. After a 16-month journey, he was able to return to work. Dan credits his positive mindset and determination not to give up as the main reasons that he was able to recover. Dan had received great support from his employer, but recently, in a corporate re-structuring, he lost his job. Once again, his positive mindset resulted in him re-framing his life and pursue a new career as a freelance motivational speaker, coach and podcast host. Dan shares with David, many of his stories of recovery and the opportunities that he sees for himself in the future.

On September 23, 2022, David interviewed Evelyn Santizo, while attending the RevolutionHER conference in Toronto Canada. Evelyn has re-invented herself professionally a number of times, with the recurring theme of serving others and helping people to feel better about themselves.
Originally from Guatemala, she migrated to Canada with her family as a young child. In her early life, she dreamt of becoming a police officer, but when her mother feared for her safety, she pursued a career in nursing instead. While working on a geriatric ward, she tells the story of helping elderly patients feel better about their appearance. In her desire to help people feel more confident about themselves, she went into fashion merchandizing, and later owned a spa. After the birth of her second child, Evelyn had gained a lot of weight and created an online store for plus-sized women’s and girl’s clothing. She then talks about her decision to lose weight with the help of a surgical procedure. Over the last eight years, Evelyn has worked as a commercial, residential and investment real estate broker.

On July 6, 2022, David interviewed John Laurito, a veteran of the financial services industry, and founder of his own consulting, executive coaching and leadership training business.
Having worked for a number of financial services companies, in which John had successfully turned around business units that were under performing, John found that he was increasingly taking on more leadership roles. Eventually, he made the decision to leave the safety of his job and start his own business in February 2020, a few short weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down businesses across the globe. In hindsight, John is glad that he made this move at the time he did, as it positioned him well to learn, and advise on the radical management changes that resulted from the move to remote working environments. Today, much of his work is with management teams to bridge the gap between CEO’s and mid-level leaders. He started his own podcast channel called “Tomorrow’s Leaders” and has recorded over 300 episodes
John also talks openly of his 25-year battle with anxiety and panic attacks, how he kept that part of himself hidden for many years and how he learnt to control them.

On June 23, 2022, David interviewed Samantha Kelly from Wexford in Ireland. This was his second interview with Samantha, the first one was about a year ago in which she told the story of how she had taught herself many aspects of social media and particularly Twitter, and how she had successfully turned her knowledge into a profitable business by helping other businesses market themselves using Twitter and other social media platforms.
One year later, Samantha is focusing most of her time on running The Women’s Inspire Network, and developing chapters globally. The network was established in 2016, prior to the Covid pandemic, and has always had its main presence online. The network’s mission is to empower its members to confidently explore business opportunities, with aspect such as age and gender, not being an obstacle to potential success.
Samantha also talks about recently reaching a milestone of 14 years of sobriety, and the achievements that she has made in that time. We discuss the similarities between the work that she does to connect and help people; and that of anyone recovering from addiction. Both involve the giving and receiving of kindness and support.

On April 19, 2022, David interviewed Mike Montgomery. Mike is better known by his business name and social media handle “Health Unicorn Mike”. Mike held professional positions in marketing and financial advisory services before specializing in the health insurance industry, first for an insurance broker, before establishing himself in his current business in 2020.
Mike describes the various types of insurance available in the United States, both public and private, and also the types of plans available, such as family plans, individual plans and group plans. For many people in the US, health insurance is a key benefit provided by their employer, for which the employee pays a portion. The types of coverage and employee contributions can vary widely from company to company.
For people insured through an employer sponsored plan, the thought of becoming an independent contractor/freelancer and losing healthcare coverage can be intimidating and may prevent people from taking that critical step. Mike explains how coverage can be obtained for everyone, regardless of their employment status.
Originally from Alaska, Mike has lived in several locations in the US and currently resides with his family in Tampa Bay, Florida.

On February 23, 2022, David interviewed Adam Smith, in Leeds, England. Adam is a Co-Founder of A-Game Consultancy, and an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Processing) Mindset Coach. In his younger life, Adam struggled at school, and was diagnosed with dyspraxia. Initially, he worked in his father’s plumbing and heating business and transitioned into hospitality, which he enjoyed and where he worked his way up to management roles. At the end of 2020, Adam approached two friends, one a physiotherapist and one a nutritionist and proposed working together in a partnership with his own skills as a mindset coach and combining their disciplines together for their clients. Within their first month, they had secured 15 clients and have continued to grow successfully since then. On February 9, 2022, David interviewed Jennifer Kumar, founder of Authentic Journeys, providing leadership coaching for companies and individuals working in cross-cultural teams.
After completing her undergraduate degree, Jennifer traveled to India and enrolled in a university in Chennai, where she obtained a Master’s degree in social work and after returning to the United States her first career was as a mental health social worker, advocating for children and youth.
In 2011, Jennifer and her husband moved back to India, but to a different state than where she had previously lived and studied. On January 7, 2022, David interviewed James Crystal, entrepreneur, motivational speaker and mental health advocate in Birmingham, England. James tells the story of how he had a safe and loving home life, but while growing up, had some behavioural issues and found difficulty fitting in with his peers. At the age of 15, he was diagnosed with ADHD, but had already started self-medicating with cannabis, likely because he did not feel comfortable within himself.
His substance use expanded to other recreational drugs. As a teenager, James suffered the traumatic experience of being sexually abused while under the influence, and he continued to use drugs to escape reality, ultimately leading to his use of heroin and cocaine. To support himself and his addiction, James turned to drug dealing and robberies, and was arrested at the age of 19 and spent 18 months in prison. During his prison time, James got sober, but his state of mental health deteriorated. After release, he relapsed into old habits and was recalled back to prison for another nine months. During his second prison term, he got sober again, studied for a business course and decided to turn his life around and help other people. After his second release, he relapsed again, and fell into depression, which he considers to be the lowest point of his life. He rejoined his church, which provided a supportive environment, through which he became inspired to forgive his aggressors and turn his life into positivity and sobriety. He has been sober since July, 2017.
Since that time, James has founded two organizations. Eeverse is a clothing brand, promoting mental health awareness, social responsibility, sustainability and community, which donates 20% of its profits to his charitable organization Be;Live, focused on encouraging people to speak up about their mental health journeys and overcome the stigma associated with mental illness. Be;Live organizes and sponsors events to educate, inspire and empower people around mental health. James recently completed his university degree in Business Management and delivers talks at some of the UK’s largest organisations. He has spoken at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Bank of England and the UK Home Office. Anyone interested in booking James to speak on mental health, addiction or overcoming adversity can contact him, he would love to talk. The Be;Live 22 onsite event will be in Birmingham. On January 12, 2022, David interviewed Mike Morawski, founder of My Core Intentions, a Chicago based multi-family real estate coaching and training company that teaches people to pursue and realize their dreams of being real estate investors. Mike draws from his own experience as a real estate investor and property manager. In the financial crash of 2008, like most real estate entrepreneurs, aside from losing a significant amount of money, Mike lost a lot more at that time. In his path towards becoming a lifelong businessman, Mike entered the construction industry as an entrepreneur in his early twenties. Later, he sold his company and started his career as a real estate agent. He built a successful team that sold over 125 homes per year. In 2005, Mike syndicated his first apartment purchase and went on to raise $18 million in private equity capital and purchased over 4,000 apartments in 30 months and built a property management company with 7,500 apartments under management. In hindsight, Mike realized that his business grew way too fast, he was over leveraged and undercapitalized when financial markets imploded. In an effort to save his businesses, he moved money between entities, but failed to disclose this to his investors, as a result he was charged with wire fraud and mail fraud which sentenced him to ten years in Federal prison. After his sentence, his wife divorced him, and he soon realized he had lost everything he loved. Mike served almost 8 years in prison, during this time he completed a bachelor’s degree in theology, wrote two books, collaborated in the creation of an ethics course with a university professor and taught classes to other inmates. After his release, which coincided with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mike has re-engineered his life and teaches entrepreneurs how to live a balanced lifestyle. David tells how he was born into a family with an alcoholic mother and an absentee father, how he was removed from his home at an early age and placed in the care home and foster care system, where he was the victim of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. As a teenager, following the death of his mother, he found himself homeless, and eventually joined the military, which gave him safety, structure and a sense of purpose.
During his eight years of service in the British Army, he was deployed twice in Afghanistan, where he participated in front-line combat against the Taliban, saw the death and injury of many fellow soldiers, some of which were his close friends, and tells of the actions he took under fire, to save the life of one of his friends, which resulted in recognition for his gallantry. During his military service, David had sought help for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), but that help ceased when he was medically discharged from the military in 2017. His mental health spiraled downwards, as he sunk further into depression and turned to alcohol and drug use, and twice attempted to take his own life.
He enrolled in several classes to become more self-aware and self-progressive, and found that the power of telling his stories, not only helped him become more positive, it also helped other people who were experiencing depression and despair. David’s mission today is to promote positivity through his online videos on Instagram and TikTok, and encourage others to tell their stories, seek support and not feel isolated and alone.

On December 9, 2021, David interviewed Liam O’Dell, award-winning freelance journalist and campaigner, specializing in deafness, disability and social media. Liam is also a former radio presenter with a background in broadcast journalism, has delivered a TEDx talk, and creates content for his own YouTube channel. Earlier this year, Liam won the Young Freelancer Award from the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed for his work on the #WhereIsTheInterpreter campaign, which challenged the UK Government on its failure to provide an in-person sign language interpreter for its Covid-19 press conferences.
Liam talks openly and honestly about his own deafness, autism, dyspraxia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and his asexual identity, including his journey with medical providers and the accompanying benefits and frustrations that he has dealt with. His degree and career in journalism have provided him with an opportunity to advocate for deaf and disabled people. We also talk about pandemic-related issues, such as mask wearing and how that has impacted deaf people. Liam also reviews theatre productions, and we discuss recently released movies featuring deaf people and how Hollywood and the media in general portrays deafness.

On this week's Wedotalk, David interviewed Brian Kennedy.
Brian is a motivational speaker and career, wellness and mental health coach, and joins me from Dublin, Ireland. Brian runs his own coaching and consulting business, BJKennoMotivation.
He tells the story of his family life, with a loving mother and an alcoholic father, and how from an early age, he always believed in working hard and giving the best of himself. His first job, during economically challenging times in Ireland, was in a factory, after which he worked in the civil service and then entered banking and financial services, where he worked his way into managerial positions. During his banking career, Brian was the victim of seven armed robberies, in which he put the safety of his staff and customers before his own, and often had the difficult task of telling customers that they could lose their homes if they were unable to make mortgage payments. As his career advanced, he took on more responsibilities and found himself working 80+ hours a week, managing whole divisions of major banks, leaving little time for his wife and children. In 2010, due to the pressures of his work life, he suffered from mental exhaustion and used that time to re-evaluate his life.
In his coaching business, Brian tells how he has helped individuals and corporations to seek positive and creative solutions to problems, and has helped people in new stages of their careers, develop into their roles successfully. He has done motivational speaking to major corporations and sports teams to help them be better versions of themselves. Brian says that the last eleven years of his life have been the most fulfilling for his family and for him professionally.

On this week's Wedotalk, David interviewed Jim Frawley.
Jim is an Executive and Organizational coach, Host of the Bellwether Hub Podcast, and author of “Adapting in Motion: Finding Your Place in the New Economy”. Jim is also a triathlete and competed in his first Ironman event two years ago.
We talk about some of Jim’s early career accomplishments. He started in radio, which he loved, and later joined a data analytics firm, which launched his career in business and finance. He worked for several financial institutions in various locations, but rather than feeling satisfied and fulfilled, he found himself feeling angry and frustrated. Having consulted with an executive coach to help identify new possibilities, he himself became a Columbia University Certified Executive Coach. He founded “Bellwether”, a company dedicated to helping organizations and individuals build resiliency and adapt to change. We talk about changing business cultures, changes that are forced upon us and those that we choose
Jim has used personal experiences and that of his clients to develop strategies to help people navigate mental health issues. Although he is not a doctor or therapist, he generally considers the three key components to be physical health, mental health and social health. Jim has hosted a podcast channel for the last three years, and his two most downloaded podcasts relate to his decision to give up drinking alcohol; and how training for an Ironman event helped him with dark thoughts he’d had and dark places his mind had visited. We concluded with a discussion about mental health in the corporate world and that although some progress has been made, significant work needs to be done in this field.

On this week's Wedotalk, David interviewed Rachel Gotto.
We talk about Rachel’s therapy and mentoring business, her experiences leading up to writing her book, her entrepreneurial spirit and the mental and emotional strength that has helped her through the darker times of her life and created a passion to help others.
Rachel first experienced a traumatic loss in her twenties, when her closest brother was diagnosed with cancer, and she nursed him for the last two years of his life, traveling the world with him to try and find a cure. Sadly, her brother died in 1996. Rachel met and married her husband, who tragically drowned in a scuba diving accident while Rachel was 6 months pregnant with their first child. They had only been married 8 months, leaving her to give birth to their first child alone. When her daughter was aged just five, things began to go badly wrong again. Rachel was diagnosed with a rare form of benign brain tumor and was told she didn’t have long to live. Determined not to give up, she hunted the world for a neurosurgeon who was willing to give her a chance at life. After an exhaustive search she found a neurosurgeon in Bristol who was willing to perform the risky surgery. 15 hours of neurosurgery surgery and one intracranial bleed later Rachel had survived, just. But the ravages of surgery had unfortunately left its mark and Rachel woke days later to find that she had been left paralyzed down the left-hand side of her body, and it took her more than two years to regain full mobility. The neurosurgery had triggered epilepsy, and after decades of being on prescription drugs to keep the epilepsy at bay she found herself addicted to benzodiazepines. This was the beginning of a particular period of hell as she embarked on a long and horrific withdrawal period in which she charted 47 symptoms over a 2.5-year period. All of these events took more than two decades out of her life, and she felt that she was walking out of a prison in her forties and had to re-start her life completely, and now has a therapy and mentoring business and Amazon published her first book “Flying on the Inside: A Memoir of Trauma and Recovery” in December 2021.

On this week's Wedotalk, David is joined by Sophia May, mental health nurse, singer/songwriter and Founder, Director & Co-CEO of Mendable.
Sophia gives an overview of Mendable and describes it as a movement, rather than an app or a tool, that provides a safe place for those with mental health challenges to support each other.
Sophia was born in London, but her family moved to rural Somerset when she was a young child. After her parents separated, Sophia bonded with a good friend who was also dealing with the separation of her parents, and so began Sophia’s discovery that she found great satisfaction in helping other people, which led to a career in nursing, and today Sophia works professionally as a mental health nurse.
When her daughter was quite young, Sophia’s music career took off quickly. Although she had some early successes, she did not feel the satisfaction and fulfilment that most people associate with success in the music business. She found more pleasure from writing, creating and performing for others, and enjoyed connecting people in her industry.
By creating Mendable and the Clubhouse room that Sophia hosts, she has introduced a platform for men to come forward and share their challenges and support each other. Having witnessed men’s abusive behaviour, Sophia attributes that in part to the lack of emotional support, from which men have typically not been able to benefit.

On this week's Wedotalk, David spoke with Jamie Kirkwood, Jared Muscat and Mike Mulkey on the subject of father-son relationships. This is particularly poignant as we approach November 11, which is Veterans Day in the USA and Remembrance Day in the UK. All three guests have appeared on previous Wedotalks.
We first reflect on our own relationships with our fathers; then we talk about what we have each learned from our fathers that shapes us as adults. We continue by discussing what aspects of our fathers’ characters we most admire, and finally, what we have learned from our parents to help us in our own parenting skills, and what type of fathers we want to be for our own children. Mike and David both have a daughter and a son who are adults; Jamie has a three-year-old daughter and Jared has a two-and-a-half-year-old son.

On this week’s Wedotalk podcast, David interviewed Australian entrepreneur Balendran Thavarajah.
Bala was born in Sri Lanka. Tragically, his mother took her own life when he was an infant and he was raised in the loving homes of his aunts. His childhood saw the outbreak of a civil war and as a result, Bala had very little schooling beyond the early years and followed the path of many young men at the time and joined the army at the age of 14. In his early twenties, he took refuge in India and from there migrated to Australia.
As a new immigrant in Sydney, with little schooling and no knowledge of English, his future looked bleak, but Bala was determined to re-build his life. Most educational establishments refused to consider him, but he was eventually admitted to Western Sydney University where he used his energy and determination to learn the English language and succeed by earning a degree in computer science.
After graduation and with an entrepreneurial spirit, Bala first started a company to offer insurance service to the elderly; in his second company he created a point-of-sale software for supermarkets; and then partnered with the founders of Bluedot Innovation as the Founding CTO. Bluedot is a successful location-based service company in Australia and the USA.
Today he is the Founder and CEO of GetMee, an AI-enabled application for mobile devices to help people adopt better language and communication skills. GetMee provides the service to people that Bala himself could have used when he arrived in Australia.

On this week's Wedotalk podcast, David interviewed Jessie Mae. Jessie is one of nine siblings in her family and she tells her story of how she experienced many traumatic events in her childhood. She was the victim of verbal abuse and was repeatedly told by her father that she would never achieve anything in life and was not worthy of the love and security that she needed in her early years. She was also the victim of spankings from her parents and recalls being sprayed with a water hose and other physical punishments for not conforming with the discipline that her parents expected.
As an adult, Jessie feels love for her parents and has come to realize that they did the best that they knew, were not equipped with the skills to cultivate their family and most likely, treated their children the same way that they were also treated in their own childhoods. Her lack of self-worth as a child and young adult, propelled Jessie into a life as an over-achiever and people-pleaser. Despite the traumas that she suffered as a child, she had a successful career in automobile sales and is the mother of four adult daughters.
In late 2019, Jessie needed to have a surgical procedure that required a three-week recovery period. It was during that time that she was able to reflect on her childhood, and her life as an adult, and realised that some of her own parenting styles had been similar to the way she had been treated and that her other behaviours, such as road-rage and general lack of tolerance in others, were triggered by childhood memories.
Today, Jessie has launched her own business to coach and help others to become the best version of themselves and to overcome their self-doubt and lack of confidence. In her own words: “I am high on life, because I discovered what it means to heal from childhood adversity and trauma. Now I’m free and hella happy”. She is in the process of writing her first book.

This week, David interviewed professional magician and mental health advocate, David Burgess. David is also qualified in neurolinguistic programming; is a hypnosis practitioner, coaching expert and mental health first aider. His mission is to bring the magic back into people’s lives, giving them the tools to gain confidence in their own abilities.
David tells the story of how he successfully became a magician and developed a passion for helping others; but his journey has not always been filled with joy and happiness. At a young age he was physically and verbally bullied at school, associated himself with the wrong group of friends and turned to using drugs and alcohol. At the age of 17, he made an attempt to take his own life, and with the love and support of his family, embarked upon his journey of recovery and realisation of his own abilities. We talk about the resources available to individuals that are going through difficult times, and that no one should feel isolated and alone when they are at their most vulnerable.

On this week's Wedotalk, David interviewed Joseph Costello, founder of Joseph Costello Mentoring.
Early in his life, he found himself unfulfilled. Having worked in a coal yard and then as a civil servant, he realised that the traditional work-life of a “9-to-5” job was not working for him, and that he was following in the footsteps of his elder generations rather than designing his own life. He found himself depressed and needed long periods of sick leave from his job, mostly due to mental illness, which he and others did not recognise.
Once he had identified what was making him sick, he decided to take ownership of his life and in 2004, Joseph bought a limousine, which started his life of working independently. He went on a journey of self-discovery, in which he focused on relationships, studied the mind, qualified in hypnosis and creative energy, and studied with many mentors. Joseph believes that within each individual lies infinite potential.
Today, Joseph works to help people develop their own pathway forward in their professional and personal lives. Joseph is a global expert in the human mindset, develops thinking into results, and helps his clients deal with negative thoughts, become better decision makers and more focused and disciplined.

This week, David interviewed Sebastiaan Hooft, joining from Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Sebastiaan grew up in suburban Amsterdam and developed a flair for business and entrepreneurship as a young teenager. He founded twenty companies in fifteen years, became recognized as one of the Netherlands’ top tech entrepreneurs and was listed as one of the country’s 100 most successful self-made entrepreneurs by the Dutch business magazine “Quote”. He had achieved fame and wealth, and was a recognized public figure.
In 2009, his life changed radically when the pressure of long work hours, managing multiple enterprises, travel, intense focus and lack of attention to health and diet, resulted in Sebastiaan suffering from a complete physical, mental and emotional breakdown.
After nine months of recovery, he made it his mission to help fellow entrepreneurs avoid the same path of self-destruction. One result of his redesigning his own life, was the publication of his first book “Redesign – Becoming a Happy, Healthy and Successful Entrepreneur”, in which he simplifies and summarizes the five facets of achieving this goal. The fifth facet is that of “Health” and in this podcast, Sebastiaan shares some insights into his journey to recovery and how others can learn from his experiences.

This week, David interviewed Sara Fernandez. Sara is a teacher, a wife, and a mother of two children and lives in Silicon Valley, California. In 2016, Sara’s family became well known in many local communities, but not for reasons that they would have sought for themselves.
At 3 ½ years old, Sara’s daughter Maia frequently fell sick with a very high fever. At first her doctors believed that she had caught a flu virus, but within a short period of time, when she did not recover, ran a number of tests and Maia was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Sara tells the story of Maia’s treatment and side effects, which involved 30 months of chemotherapy and steroids. Last month Maia celebrated her ninth birthday and has been cancer free for three years.
Sara tells how important it was to have a strong support system of friends and family, a very supportive employer, Maia’s re-integration into life and school, and the effect on Maia’s younger brother. Her family had to follow strict hygiene protocols and practice physical distancing from others several years before it became widely practiced due to the pandemic.

This week, David interviewed Nina Fernandez, an entrepreneur, an actor, a real estate syndicator, and founder of a non-profit called SeedAndLegacy (S&L), whose primary mission is to provide financial literacy to underserved communities. Long-term, she'd like to establish Arts and Finance academies for troubled youth, focusing on their emotional and behavioural restructuring and development through holistic therapies and exposure to entrepreneurship, community-building, and self-sufficiency enterprise. Nina has a vision to influence schools throughout the world to teach the disadvantaged and disenfranchised youth of today to become the strong leaders of tomorrow.
Nina was born in Harlem, New York, is a graduate of the Tisch School at NYU, and is the first in her family to attend university. She celebrated her graduation with much pride from her family, who had given her much emotional support and encouragement, but they did not have the resources to support her financially and upon graduation, Nina found herself with nearly $250,000 in student loan debt. While working as a bartender in New York to support her acting career, Nina met people of significant wealth and educated herself in financial matters, which led her to entrepreneurship and real estate syndication. She is currently launching a set of digital products which promote and support her coaching services for budding entrepreneurs, like herself, who need clarity today on how to start building their legacy through entreprise! Nina sees financial education as a powerful tool that most people do not understand, and by teaching these skills, financial success is attainable for many people, rather than being an unfulfilled dream.

This week, David interviewed David Murray-Hundley.
David is a successful computer programmer and entrepreneur, and is an advisor, mentor and investor to many early-stage companies. He started programming at the age of 9, and having watched the movie “War Games”, aspired to hack the Pentagon. One of his games was later recognized and released. David was an early student of artificial intelligence and B2B internet solutions and sold an early business to Chase Bank. In 1999, David moved to the US to become one of the founding team at CommerceOne.
David’s life has not always been a string of successes, and he has found himself at a low point twice in his life. On June 10, 2021, David interviewed Dr. Lizzy Bernthal, Founder of Release Your Potential Ltd.
Don't forget to like and subscribe if you want to see more videos with more interesting people like Lizzy!
Having been told that she did not have the potential to go to university, Lizzy trained as a nurse, and also became a midwife. At the age of 31, she joined the British Army and during her military career, had the opportunity to take a Bachelor of Science Degree in Healthcare Management, a Masters of Education, and went on to earn a PhD from University of Southampton.
In her last military assignment, Lizzy was appointed global head of nursing, which led to her passion for resilience, well-being and empowerment. This was the platform from which she launched her own company, to coach others in these skills and release their own potential. Much of her military career had involved coaching others, which she did not realise at the time, and she was able to use those skills in her current business.
Most clients of her coaching business are business leaders that Lizzy coaches in management and leadership skills, as well as developing confidence and helping to eliminate toxic management within organizations. For her business clients, Lizzy helps develop vision and purpose.

On this weeks Wedotalk, David interviewed Samantha Kelly. Samantha joined him from Wexford in Ireland, and told the story of how she taught herself many aspects of social media and particularly Twitter, and how she has successfully turned her knowledge into a profitable business by helping other businesses market themselves using Twitter and other social media platforms.
About ten years ago, Samantha was the single mother of two daughters receiving welfare benefits, her marriage had broken up, her father had passed away and she was a recovering alcoholic who had been sober for three years. She created a gift pack for young girls approaching their first period, and with no money and no financial backing, used social media to market her product and reach her customers. Not only did she tell her story using social media, she encouraged others to do the same and saw the power and potential of using social media to reach a target audience. In 2012, she appeared on the TV show “Dragon’s Den” (known as “Shark Tank” in the US) to seek investment for her business. Although her quest for investment was not successful, it opened up many new opportunities for her.
Samantha describes some of her business successes, how she established The Women’s Inspire Network and how she rebuilt her life from her low point and some of the challenges that she faced as a recovering alcoholic.

"Maybe I'm just a gambler or maybe I'm just lucky."
After last weeks Wedotalk with Joanna, we all want to know where she is going next.
In this second talk with Joanna, we talk about taking risks and the social and emotional challenges that comes with risk taking and traveling the world as a single woman, and of course, what her plans for the future are...
Joanna tells of taking risks as a teenager versus an adult. During her time in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, she experienced Islamic hospitality, rather than the hesitancy that is often associated with middle eastern countries. Although the laws of the UAE are based on Sharia Law, she always felt as free and safe there as in the United States.
We also talk about Joanna’s passion for leisure travel, and how her life as a teacher has given her the time to be able to travel and satisfy her curiosity. At first, she found the concept of solo travel intimidating, but now finds it exciting and has become a pioneer of traveling alone as well as with others.
Joanna tells how during a group trip to the mountains of Peru, she got separated from her fellow travelers and fell off the edge of the trail and had to spend the night fighting hypothermia.
We end with Joanna telling me of her next move.

On May 1, 2021, David interviewed career teacher Joanna Monfort-Torres.
Joanna tells her story that she was born in the Philippines, grew up in California, and has lived in Finland, Spain, Ghana, United Arab Emirates and Madagascar, before returning to the USA in 2020.
Her first experience living abroad was as an exchange student in a remote town in Eastern Finland during her final year in high school. From there, she did her undergraduate degree in Madrid, Spain, in International Relations and Diplomacy, with the plan to be an international civil servant, and her first job was to work for the United Nations in New York.
Joanna’s passion for working with people and serving others, led her to a career in teaching and that was her way of becoming an international civil servant. After completing her teaching degree, she went to work for a charter school in California for five years, and then launched herself into the world of teaching at international schools in Ghana, United Arab Emirates and Madagascar. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she was repatriated to the USA, where she has worked at an international school for the last year.
Joanna has decided to move on at the end of the current school year, and will talk about her next adventure when we return for another talk.

"By the time I got on the stage as the headliner, I was completely roasted"
On this weeks Wedotalk, David spoke with singer, songwriter and guitarist Steve Dagleish, or "Dagelfish". After secondary school, Steve was offered a place at Imperial College, London to study physics. During his first year, he found himself playing his guitar more than studying. Nevertheless, he was accepted a full-time position at Barclays bank in the trading support area.
In the years that followed, Steve became a foreign exchange trader, which he loved, and he later developed an interest in the psychology of trading and transitioned into a coaching role, in which he coached traders, salespeople and managers. In the 1990’s, after 20 years with Barclays Bank, he established his own company and built a client base of commercial and central banks.
In the early 2000’s, Steve became re-acquainted with his guitar, and tells the story of how he performed for the first time in 30 years, which led to many more songs and performances in the years that followed, first as part of a band and. Then as a solo performer. He talks about writing his own songs, some of the artists that have inspired him and shares stories of the successes and rejections that he has experienced.

This week David speaks with Jana Matthews. Jana has an impressive CV, both educationally and professionally, which includes a Master’s Degree from Yale University, a PhD from Harvard, and many professional positions in multiple countries. She has authored or co-authored eight books.
Jana gives some examples of taking risks in her life and networking with many professional people that has led to some of her opportunities. Having grown up in Indiana, she tells of her trip to the UK in her second year at university, which was also her first trip abroad, with only $450 in spending money and some hardships that she had to endure.
The one common theme of Jana’s career is innovation and entrepreneurship. She enjoys surrounding herself with positive people with a quest for knowledge or those that have knowledge to share. She is now an Australian citizen and considers Australia to be her home.
