Opposition to Covenant Renewal

Nehemiah 3 and 4

Some of the People:

  1. The High Priest took the lead. (v 1)
  2. The Tekoites repaired two sections (Vs. 5, 27)
  3. The Tekoite nobles would not help. (vs. 5)
  4. Men from the opposition’s jurisdiction helped. (v. 7)
  5. The two rulers of Jerusalem helped. (V. 9, 12)
  6. Priests outside of Jerusalem helped. (22)

10 points in this passage.

  1. The opposition came with anger.
  2. The opposition turned to taunting.
  3. The opposition was met with prayer.
  4. The opposition eventually turned to violence.
  5. The opposition was met with prayer and physical action.
  6. The work started to decrease.
  7. The threats of the opposition were demoralizing.
  8. Society began to beg them to stop building.
  9. The opposition needed to be faced.
  10. The workers needed encouragement.

In the context of covenant renewal:

  1. There will be opposition.
  2. That opposition will be first from anger and then from violence.
  3. We will need to pray and take action.
  4. We will want to stop.
  5. We will need to fight for covenant renewal.

Responding to God’s Direction

  1. God’s timing is always best.
  2. God will use the ungodly to bring about His purposes.
  3. God will give us courage if we pray.
  4. God’s protection and provision are with those who do His will.
  5. Godly plans will face a lot of opposition.
  6. God sometimes has us work covertly.
  7. A testimony can be very influential.
  8. We should be dogmatic about what God says.

What do we learn in this context?

  1. God works toward His plan.
  2. God works in His time.
  3. God wants us to pray, testify, and stand our ground.

Wisdom at a Cost

Eccl. 7

  1. Trade-off #1 – Wise people will mourn more.
  2. Trade-off #2 – Wrong decisions will drive wise people crazy.
  3. Trade-off #3 – Wise people will have to yield to wisdom.

About the work of God:

  1. God is sovereign.
  2. God's ways are paradoxical.
  3. God allows man to have free will.
  4. God will preserve those who love Him.

Returning to the theme of wisdom, Solomon says:

  1. Wisdom will help you, but you will never be perfect.
  2. Sometimes it's wise not to know something.

Stick to the Plan

Eccl 3.

The blessings of living for God

  1. God gives us purpose. (10)
  2. What God gives us to do is perfect when done at the right time. (11a)
  3. God knows what will last. (11b)

Four Perceptions

  1. There is nothing better than finding joy in good works. (12)
  2. God wants us to enjoy life. (13)
  3. Everything God purposes will come about. (14)
  4. God will ensure this. (15)

Two Realities

  1. Some godly acts have been replaced with wickedness. (16)
  2. God will judge everyone for how well they lived according to His plan. (17)

In his depression:

  1. Solomon did not recognize humanity's unique nature. (18-20)
  2. Solomon could not see the destiny of man. (21)
  3. Solomon focused only on his earthly life. (22)

Application

  1. Trust God's plan.
  2. Try not to focus only on this side of eternity.
  3. Live out God's plan as if eternity depends on you.

The Search for Purpose

Eccl. 1:12-2:26

You can find happiness in that new jet ski this summer. But it won't last. You can find happiness in that beach trip, too, but I promise you that joy will evaporate when you're coming home and stuck in traffic. Any new toy, new date, new hobby, or new knowledge will only bring your happiness for so long. The joy of the Lord, however, can last forever.

Solomon is right. Things, worldly knowledge, and wealth will bless you for a little while, but the joy of being in God's presence, living out His will, and living for His pleasure can be a joy for a lifetime and beyond.

How do we apply this to our lives?

  1. Recognize God's purpose for you and serve Him.
  2. Pursue wisdom and knowledge for the purpose of glorifying and serving God.
  3. Prioritize the joy of the Lord's blessing.

Did you know that according to the ADAA, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 1/5 adults and 1/3 teenagers in our country have an anxiety disorder? I read this on their website. "…the repercussions of depression and anxiety extend beyond individuals, significantly impacting businesses and the global economy, with over $1 trillion per year in lost productivity due to depression and anxiety, and it's projected to reach $6 trillion."

You might be thinking, "Why in the world are we studying this? This will be a downer. This doesn't apply to me. I am a believer, and I know my purpose. God is good, life is good, I'm doing good.”

Yes, Christians are more likely to say that than non-Christians. If that is your case, I say, "Praise the Lord!" But there will be seasons when you will not be doing so well. And some of us are already there. The truth in this book is what we need or will need, and your kids will need, and your parents will need. If life is good, store this teaching away for when you need it. If not, I pray this helps you answer some of those tough questions even today. You see, this book applies to everyone who has ever lived. We will read some of the author's experiences, but we will gain from the results he drew from his seemingly full life. I'm telling you right now, this book will answer some of life's most challenging questions that arise when our experiences don't meet our expectations.

When we read about Babylon the Great, we might picture an actual city. There will probably be a literal centralized place for the world's government in the end times. It may even be called Babylon and sit on the ancient site of Babylon. However, Babylon the Great is better understood as a worldwide system of organized religion and government, agreed upon by many nations, unified in common rebellion against the worship and will of God. It is a unified, recognized, mandated, evil world system that will be captured and controlled by the Antichrist during the last days before Jesus' return. The anti-god religious system that began in Gen 11 will become fully implemented in the tribulation. This episode details that system and its demise.

The Most Beneficial Resolution

  2. Admitted he had not attained perfection.
  3. Kept a short memory of the past.

People who are ready for the call of Christ:

  1. Belong to the Kingdom of God.
  2. Are waiting on Jesus to return.
  3. Are expecting to be changed.
  4. Believe Jesus will do this.

Only one resolution is necessary: In 2026, I will work to be ready for the upward call of Jesus.

If you are ready, you will:

  1. Be in a saving relationship with God.
  2. Be morphing into the likeness of His Son.
  3. Be doing Kingdom work for His glory.
  4. Be looking for the return of Jesus.

The Stoppage, the Sealed, the Sheep, and the Seventh Seal

Revelation 7:1-8:5

We've been studying the book of Revelation and have now come to the end of the seal judgments. But before the seventh seal is opened, there is a hiatus in action. This pause is one of three intervals that take place between the opening of the fifth seal and the first of the bowl judgements. In this interval, there is an angelic scene on Earth. God seals 144,000 Jews who have finally become what He had envisioned for the nation to be all along: evangelists to the world. Then a new group is introduced in heaven. And the seventh seal is broken. Let's read about these things today.

The seven seal judgments in Revelation are no joke. From pet attacks to slashing murderers, to disappearing islands, it is hard to hear the truth about the first part of God's judgment in the book of Revelation. It would be best to be saved from the wrath of God before the rapture.

Zoom out

Romans 8:28, Eph. 5:26-27, Phil. 1:6

I heard a reporter say the theories around Charlie Kirk's death are insane. You have to admit, they are a little incredible and wild, but I wouldn't say they are insane. Most of them are improbable, but not stuck in the realm of the impossible. And for the church, in light of end-times prophecies that we have been studying, there is one touted theory of this murder that is having a remarkable and dangerous effect. That theory is that Israel killed Charlie Kirk. If it is true or even accepted by the masses as true, it will be a total game-changer for many American Christians. What do we do with that? We zoom out.

Concerning these healings by Jesus:

  1. Well people brought sick people to Jesus.
  2. Sick people interacted with Jesus before being healed.

Why does God heal some and not others?

  3. Maybe Jesus is simply unwilling to heal them at this time or ever.

Concerning our part in the physical healing of another:

  2. Be a witness of the goodness of God.
  3. Give an invite and bring people to the feet of Jesus.

The Mourning, the Miracle, and the Meeting
1 Cor. 15:1-8, ESV

The gospel story has been retold today. The question is, "Do you believe that story?" Millions have, and I have to tell you, the trajectory of their lives was changed forever. I know it sounds crazy. But it's true. On My granddaddy's grave, it's true. Do you believe it?

You might ask, "So what? Why do I have to believe that? " Oh friend, you don't have to believe it. God gives you that option. But if you do, and I hope you do, your life's destiny will change. Maybe not physically when it comes to your situation here. You still live on earth. You will still face today's problems, but your attitude will change towards those things. And catch this: Your eternal story will be rewritten, and your name will be recorded in His book with the millions of other people found worthy to live as citizens of heaven with Jesus forever.

Can you believe His story today? You bet. I did. You see, the Bible is true. And it says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved for heaven. You will inherit citizenship in heaven. Do you want that? I know you do.

And since you do, would you confess your sins to God today, right now, and believe he has the power over death, the ability to give you eternal life? Agree to live under His authority and for His glory, and it will be yours.

The Purpose of Parables
Matthew 13:10-17, 34-35

Why did Jesus choose to teach in parables?

In a general sense,

  1. The use of parables in teaching was common in those days.
  2. The desired truth was easier to remember when using a parable.
  3. The listener could easily relate to the characters in a parable.
  4. The parable was effective in altering behavior or thought.

In a spiritual sense, Jesus used parables because:

  1. The truth needed to be told, but people would reject it.
  2. The truth was essential, but people wanted the sensational.

How Jesus justifies His decision :

  1. New truth builds on the acceptance of previous truth. (12)

The Point:

The Application:

  • We have been given the most evident sign.

Ethics
Titus 2:7-14

  • Ethics includes the study of moral conduct, what is right and wrong, and where those determinations come from.

Points of the Passage:
1. "Good" is referenced three times. 7, 10, and 14
2. Modeling good works pleases God. 9
3. Showing good faith puts Jesus on display. 10
4. Being passionate about good works is a testimony of salvation. 14

Morality is a set of jars in which we keep slips of paper recording right and wrong actions, thoughts, and beliefs. Ethics is the study of how and where we got the jars and who sorts the actions, thoughts, and beliefs into them.

  • Teleological ethics is the study of morality with only the concern of how things will turn out.
  • Deontological ethics is the view that we are bound by duty to do what is right simply because it is the right thing to do.

Which worldview gives the best explanation for moral living?

  • Muslims believe in ethics coming from a god with no mercy.
  • Secularists base their ethics only on keeping humans alive on the earth.
  • Marxists base their ethics only on the reconstruction of the economic system.
  • Postmodernists base their ethics on what is best for each community despite what they might do to another community.
  • New-age spiritualists base their ethics on individualized truth that sets no standard and does not consider the morality of another.
  • Christianity is the only worldview that sees our ethics coming from someone greater and better than us and encourages us to live by morals compelled by love.

Philosophy  - the study of knowledge, truth, and the nature of ultimate reality.

It seeks to answer three questions.
1.What is ultimately real?
2.How do we really know something is true?
3.What causes us to even think about these things?

Understanding philosophy is important.
1.Some people in your circles of influence believe nothing outside of what we can see and touch or duplicate in a lab is real.
2.Some believe we can't know and, therefore, shouldn't be concerned with absolute truth.

What does all this worldview information tell us?
1.Christianity best defends what is real.
2.Christianity has a comforting base of absolute truth.
3.Christianity best explains the tension between the material and spiritual parts of our lives.

Concerning Forgiveness
Matthew 6:14-15 ESV

Since losing salvation is not an option, Jesus must have been talking about some other loss. I am completely convinced that what He is talking about is relational forgiveness, losing closeness with God. We grieve the Holy Spirit and lose closeness with our heavenly father.

Refusing to forgive someone is not a mirror reflecting the glory and truth of what He wants others to see. We are reflecting His glory and sharing the light of truth with the world. We must forgive sins against us in order that they may understand that their sins against God can also be forgiven.

The teaching really is that simple.·       Forgive others and God will stay close to you.
·       Refuse to forgive and God will not be close to you.

Understand what keeps you from forgiving others.·       Pride
·       Revenge
·       Hurt
·       Or maybe you haven’t been forgiven and don’t know how.

The Beatitudes - Pure in Heart
Matthew 5:8

Let me ask you something. Like the Jews, are you trying to save your own space in heaven with God? If so, you are not going to make it. That destiny is not gained by your works, even righteous works. In fact, that destiny is not gained by law-abiding people. A heavenly destiny is only gained by those who are pure of heart. Only they will see God. This is why David said, Create in me a clean heart oh God. You and I must trust in the sacrifice and the ability of Jesus to save us. Eph. 2:8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” It is God and God alone, who can save your soul and save your place in heaven. Will you trust Him today to make you pure of heart? It’s the only way.

Eschatology: The Judgements
Revelation 20:7-15

Last week, we learned that the Millennial Kingdom must take place because of the promises that God made to Jesus, to humanity, to the nation of Israel, to the church, and to the rest of creation. We learned that there will be living people, not people with glorified bodies, living in the world during this time. Those living people, who knew and served Jesus, will have children during those thousand years who will not completely share their passion for Christ. With peace, the population of the earth will grow immensely during this time. Those who are born will be born by natural means and still have natural tendencies from the fall. Although this kingdom is ruled by Christ, it is still a worldly kingdom. By that I mean, the world’s sinful influences remain. Their sinful tendencies must be dealt with after the millennial reign.

Those are the two judgments. One for Christians and one for non-Christians. Although both are presided over by Christ, they could not be more different. They are different in time, setting, outcome, and severity. Knowing this now, how do we respond? What do you think we should do in light of this? The same reactions that I have been telling you this whole series. Be thankful and breathe easy. Be thankful. Aren’t you thankful that Jesus saved you? You should be thankful that the one who loved you enough to save you is the same one who will be seated on the throne that will judge you. Be thankful that there is no more condemnation for you if you are in Christ Jesus.

Eschatology: The Second Comin
Revelation 19:1-20:3

Five differences between the rapture and the second coming. (from gotquestions.org)
1. At the rapture, believers meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17). At the second coming, believers return with the Lord to the earth (Revelation 19:14).
2. The second coming occurs after the great and terrible tribulation (Revelation chapters 6–19). The rapture occurs before the tribulation (1 Thessalonians 5:9; Revelation 3:10).
3. The rapture is the removal of believers from the earth as an act of deliverance (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17, 5:9). The second coming includes the removal of unbelievers as an act of judgment (Matthew 24:40-41).
4. The rapture will be secret and instant (1 Corinthians 15:50-54). The second coming will be visible to all (Revelation 1:7; Matthew 24:29-30).
5. The second coming of Christ will not occur until after certain other end-times events take place (2 Thessalonians 2:4; Matthew 24:15-30; Revelation chapters 6–18). The rapture is imminent; it could take place at any moment (Titus 2:13; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:50-54).”

What am I to do with the information of His second coming?1. Be thankful that you will be looking down on the battlefield instead of looking up at the coming army of the Lord Jesus.
2. Breathe easy in the knowledge of our part of the end times saga.
· We love God, love people, and make disciples.
· We yearn for the rapture.

Are you ready for the rapture or scared of the second coming?

Concerning End Times
Eschatology: The Rapture

Concerning the rapture, there are two things of which we are certain.1. Jesus will return to rapture the church. 1 Thess. 4:13-18
2. The timing of the rapture is imminent but unknown. Thess. 5:1-11; Mark 13:32-33

7 Reasons to believe in a pre-tribulation rapture1. The truth of both Matthew 16:18 and Revelation 13:5-7.
· The point: Assuming Jesus is truthful and He is, then how shall the gates of hell prevail and the beast conquer the church?

  1. The location of John 14:1-3 and Rev. 20:1-4
    · The point: If the church is not raptured before the tribulation and is raptured when He returns, when will we go to the place that He has prepared for us?

  2. The distinction between Rev. 16:1 and Romans 5:9
    · The point: If the wrath of God was poured out on Christ on the cross and poured out again on the church if it is indeed present in the tribulation, doesn’t that lessen the work of Christ on the cross?

  3. The precedence of 2 Peter 2:5-9.
    · The point: God is consistent and without shifting show, right? Why would He show us this example of the salvation of the righteous from the wrath of God if He was going to break consistency?

  4. The Promises of Rev. 3:10 and 1 Thess. 5:9
    · The point: Why would an all-loving God lie to His church?

  5. The purposes of Jer. 30:7 and 2 Thess. 2:7-8
    · The Point: If the church is present during the tribulation, why would He only ever refer to it as a time for the Israelites? And if we are there, why would He leave us after promising to be with us always?

  6. The comfort of 1 Thess 4:18 and Titus 2:11-13
    · The Point: What is so encouraging about looking forward to the tribulation? What kind of blessed hope looks for the tribulation to happen so we can get to the 2nd coming of Christ.

Essential Doctrine Series, Part 6
Concerning Salvation – Regeneration
Ezekiel 36:23-26; John 3:4; 2 Corinthians 5:16-17

“Regeneration is the secret act of God in which He imparts new spiritual life to us.” – Dr. Wayne Grudem

Be assured that, eventually, your new body will be attached to your soul at the rapture of the church, when you will meet Jesus in the air. That is the future regeneration promised to us. However, saving regeneration takes place in the present. It begins at the quickening of your spirit in order for you to hear and understand the word of God and ends with the separation of your spirit from your flesh, which makes you a new creation after you place your faith in Christ.

What does this element of the doctrine of salvation cause us to do? It should
1.     Cause us to understand our duality and help us make spiritual choices.
2.     Cause us to separate the physical from the spiritual and follow the urging of His Spirit.
3.     Cause us to be thankful and worship God.

Essential Doctrine Series, Part 6
Concerning Salvation - Grace

Grace can be defined by the acronym God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. It literally means that people receive the kindness of God when they do nothing to deserve it. In the Bible, we see that grace manifests itself in two different ways.

1.     Common grace - Genesis 2: 16-17; 3:6; Romans 3:23
             ·       Why would God do this? God extends common grace to the masses so that He can redeem over time those who would be saved, to demonstrate His goodness and mercy, and to demonstrate His justice and glory in due time.

2.     Saving grace - Ephesians 2:1-9
            ·       Saving grace is the kindness of God to give people what they never deserved in order to draw them to Himself and accomplish salvation.

CJ Mahaney wrote in his book, The Cross Centered Life, “Only those who are truly aware of their sin can truly cherish grace.” Are you aware of the enormity of your sin? If not, you can’t possibly understand the magnitude of saving grace.

Racism is the biggest farce in the world. It is the most ridiculous and stupid debate there is. According to the Bible, there is only one race. The truth is racism is a made-up concept talked about by Marxist, atheistic, evolutionists who seek to separate humans into categories in order to divide and conquer the masses. In the purest sense of the word, what we are experiencing is not racism. It is a family feud. Common origin is an important theological doctrine that has often been forgotten throughout the epoch of man. God’s people, now need to know it and show it. Too many of us have got it wrong in the past. Let’s stop the cycle of repeating past sins. Help me pray this message spreads.
