Are you struggling to change an old habit? Wondering why you can’t quite successfully implement the new lifestyle you have been wanting? Are you judging yourself for it?
NonViolent Communication (NVC) is a framework developed by the clinical psychologist Marshall Rosenberg. NVC demonstrates clear, effective and empathetic communication. It is often described as a natural language of mediation or an application of mindfulness. NVC is a practical way to deeply and authentically connect with yourself, to understand more accurately WHY we do what we do and to effect change in our lives.
Imagine trying to move a boat when the anchor is down. We all have habits and behaviours that we would like to change but experience shows that this is remarkably difficult. Why? Habits and behaviours are often the effect, but we are usually unaware of the underlying cause. Using NVC, we can trace unwanted habits to their core unmet needs and examine the ways these unwanted habits have actually been helping us. Once that clarity is achieved, we can move the anchor and the boat follows, transforming the pattern.
Today Selene will be chatting with her friend, Glenn Treacy about how we can use nonviolent communication to help ourselves to change unwanted habits. Glenn will coach Selene in creating change with a habit she wants to shift. And Selene closes the show by sharing how she uses NVC to connect more deeply with herself.

Trying something new with this episode, Selene will speak from the heart and share what is "alive" in her. She will explore what this need "to be seen and heard" is about.
Then she will open the show for live callers to call in and receive free NVC coaching on the air.
Today, I'm going to be talking about an experience I had this week that illustrates "cultural appropriation" to me. For the first time I think I finally "get it". (And I don't mean the overt kind like dressing up as Pocahontas, rather I mean the subtle kind of well meaning people who want to learn.) I'm going to share what happened and break it down using NVC. I'll use the four "steps" of NVC to explore the expereince I had and to explore my reaction to that experience. Later, I’ll open for callers or questions, and then I’ll close by sharing how I deepen my relationship with myself through NVC.
In this episode, Selene explores what happens we when look deeper at our "shoulds" (I should do this, I should be better, I should....). What happens when we love ourselves despite our shoulds, when we stop forcing ourselves to do things we dont want to do. And why do we should on ourselves in the first place?
Then she will open the show for live callers to call in and receive free NVC coaching on the air.
Today I’m sharing one of my personal experiences with how NVC changed my life, through self empathy. Later, I’ll open for callers or questions, and then I’ll close by sharing how I deepen my relationship with myself through NVC. In the second half of the show I'll open for live callers and share some NVC coaching!!
In this pilot episode of See the Happy Duck, Selene Aswell introduces herself and some of the most foundational principals of NonViolent Communication (NVC). She discusses the model for human existence that NVC offers and the ways that has impacted her understanding of self and others. And she explains the title of the show--- what exactly is this invitation to SEE the happy duck? What happy duck? Why see it? And where is it?
Join us in the second half of the show for live NVC coaching. NVC is not only a "technique" for communicating better, it is also a spiritual awareness and a system for self healing and personal growth.? Have you had a recent conflict? Do you have repeating self-critical thoughts? If yes, then NVC coaching could help you work with that! No previous knowledge of NVC is necessary to receive this coaching. ?
