Unpacking moments in New Zealand history and culture, through podcasts, video essays and more. The hosts, Thabi (he/him) and Kii (he/him) trawl through the various comment sections on social media, dissecting the good, bad and ugly so you don’t have to.
To understand where we are now, we must look at how we begun. Following up on our latest voicemail, Thabi and Kii travel back to 1985 to look on an event that the older generation of New Zealanders feel pride in. Karangahape full ingoa is Te Karanga a Hape - The Calling Place of Hape. Hape was a rangatira back in the rā, and his name literally means “clubbed foot” or “left behind.” When planning to pull up in Aotearoa from Hawaiki (around 1350 AD ish), everyone came together and decided to prioritise younger and physically fit people for their long and hard voyage. Hape was left behind by the Tainui waka because of his clubbed foot, but Tangaroa came to his aid, and sent a taniwha, Kaiwhare, to bring him here. When Hape arrived, he and Kaiwhare made their way into the Manukau Harbour (where Kaiwhare stayed) and Hape saw a strangely flat mountain (Ihumaatao) where he waited for the Tainui waka to arrive, calling out to them - the calling place of Hape!

The USA’s involvement in every war since the Second World War has been for the sanctity of ‘freedom’. Therefore any disagreement the nation comes to, the query is thrown upon the ‘troops’. Other nations have the ‘economy’ to worry about and how this will affect the ‘1%.

Through Waitangi Day to Anzac Day, our goal to unpack one word in the New Zealand dictionary gave us plenty of reflective moments. Moments where we nearly laughed and instances where we nearly cried. The Kiwi. The word that comes with four identities and countless diasporas. A word brought into a conversation to ease tension and unify. A word without definition in the lexicon. Overseas or swimming in our oceans, what we expect of the kiwi and what the kiwi is; changes. This was an exploration into dissecting a wider narrative over seven episodes. We looked introspectively at the identity of the nation, the average New Zealander and the events that shape the nation. While our writers researched and fact checked, no podcasts, no articles and no news agency looked at it like we did.
We’ll continue to the push barriers of what you expect from a New Zealand podcast in Season Four. Until then, thank the team behind the season:

In the last chapter of what it means to be a kiwi or a New Zealander, we take a look at Anzac day. A day which has historically been synonymous with words like commemorate, service and remembrance, has recently danced with terms like politicised, protest and relevance. We dissect what ANZAC day means to New Zealanders in 2021, whether social media reflects the reality of the commemorations and ultimately, if ANZAC day is political.
Season 3 has been an introspective look into New Zealand's history and how it's shaped personal identity. Seven different moments that help us all answer the questions: Are you a Kiwi? Are you a New Zealander?

On this episode of Unpack, we take a look at the cultural hub of Aotearoa, South Auckland. We discuss, the narratives around the newly built privately owned prison in Wiri, Manuwera, the decision to highlight a high school brawl, and the dissonance between Jawsh 685's allegiance to Samoa, and the claims of being an Auckland, and not a South Auckland artist. Over the last decade in particular, misrepresentation in the media has been a big issue for South Auckland.

This week, we take a look at referendum that polarised the country - Flag Referendum. Its a topic that divided communities, with people arguing the flag represented our countries heritage, and changing it would disrespect the the troops that represented New Zealand. In contrast, those for changing the flag believed we needed to move away from it’s colonial roots, and that our current flag didn’t align with New Zealand’s national identity. On top of the localised work place water cooler discussions, politicians John Key and Winston Peters used the media to communicate their perspectives - John for changing the flag, and Winston against changing the flag. We discuss these points and more in the latest episode of Unpack.

They’ve been a mainstay in the news for the last few years for a number of issues which we discuss on the episode. These include the controversial methods of uplifting children, ‘forgetting’ about children at the Ministry for Vulnerable Children offices, and their inaction leading to the sad, unfortunate deaths of our tamariki. This episode we take a look at the organisation before 2017, while it was still known as CYFs.
This was one of the most difficult episodes to record, but at the same time was one of the most important.
