Observing Others: Recent Episodes

Tim Roper and Kelly Silvester

Someone once said “the eyes are the windows to the soul.”If you ponder on that statement long enough one of the most profound insights you with ever experience will dawn on you. It will enlighten your mind with such force it will be one of the greatest light blub moments you will ever have. This eureka aha light bulb wake up moment will occur because the lightening strike epiphany you will have will not be what you expected. Here it is: If the eyes are the window to the soul, it is not as much about what those eyes reveal when looking into another’s eyes, as much as, seeing from another person’s perspective. That’s right: a willingness to see through another’s eye’s will be the greatest discovery you will ever make! Observing others is not as much about watching other people as it is about seeing the world from their viewpoint.Come watch with us!

What motivates men?

Needs and wants are motivators.

So are rewards.

For podcast purposes we have broken down some of these needs and wants and rewards into categories.

Today's podcast we talk about External Motivators, Internal Motivators, and Supernal Motivators.

Each of the 3 areas can be broken down into subcategories or facets.

Under External Motivators: Physical, Sexual, Financial, Material, Recreational

Under Interal Motivators: Mental, Emotional, Social, Political, Moral

Under Supernal Motivators: Spiritual, Theological, Marital, Parental, Personal

These categories can be likened to the 18 wheels on a semi truck.

Consider the weight balance and necessary tire pressure on the 18 wheels. All of the eighteen tires are necessary but if one tire has a blow out, the remaining tires can manage the load until the tire can be repaired or replaced. If each tire represented
a need, having several flat tires would negatively affect the a balance in the system. If the blown tire is neglected and other tires eventually blow as well, the rig would be stranded.

You could easily over exaggerate a few areas while neglecting others. You could be physically fit for example, but socially inept. You could be in shape financially, but an absent husband or father. You could even excel spiritually and intellectually but be emotionally unstable.

Listen and discover ways you can improve character as you focus on the facets of your life that move you.

And make sure you get colon cancer screening!

For today's episode we are calling these categories "Silos"
Listen as we explore silos and how to bridge the gaps between them.

It has been a busy summer but we are back!

Summer is almost over and then it is back to school, of course.

With life being so busy, it is hard not to let things and people slip through the cracks.

And, sometimes it is all because we simply procrastinate.

Until people and events remind us that life is short and, as the saying goes, we shouldn't put off tomorrow what we can do today.

Now is the time to prioritize and reevaluate our priorities.

Before time gets away from us.

Do open minds open doors?

Well,  closed doors and closed minds have something in common.

Neither is in a position to expand perspective.

Today we are at Open Doors trying  to open minds.

Especially about what we say about other people.

Which is tied to this quote: What Sally says about Susie says more about Sally than it does about Susie.

It is hard to admit when we are wrong. Perhaps a better approach would be to say our viewpoint has changed.

A changed viewpoint is a changed perspective. Perspective can change by seeing things from someone else's point of view. Diversity is the welcomed and free exchange of differing viewpoints. Diversity can provide some of the greatest change in perspective by offering a greater divergence of viewpoints.

Inclusion welcomes and respects all viewpoints. The more we learn from others the more our perspective enlarges. Our appreciation for others also grows when we expand our perspective by seeing from another's point of view.

Join us as we expand our awareness about how we can help people better their lives while opening doors and blessings of our own.

My best friend's name is Dan.

Well, Dan's best friend is in the doghouse.

Have you ever been in the doghouse with your best friend?

How do you mend fences when frienships get messy?

We have some guests on today's podcast that have some good ideas.

Thanks Kolton Rackham, Lorin Jeppsen and Angie Thorpe for joining us!

Once there was a dog whose owner was injured in a car accident and was taken to a hospital. The injuried man lived alone. He called his neighbor and asked if his neighbor would go and feed and water the dog. The neighbor agreed and went next door to feed the dog.

The dog, however, did not trust the neighbor. Once the neighbor was in the dog's back yard, the dog began growling and snarling at the neighbor. The man couldn't get passed the dog to get the food or water. So the neighbor left and tried again the following day.

The next day the result was the same. The dog still did not like or trust the neighbor. Several days went by. The neighbor had made multiple fruitless attempts to no avail.

One day the neighbor thought that if he brought some dog food with him, that might just do the trick. The neighbor even brought some meaty treats with him that day.

By the time the neighbor came back with food in hand, the dog was weak from lack of food and water and exhausted from so much barking. Gently the neighbor held out the food hoping the dog would not bite the hand that fed him.

Bashfully the dog decided to accept the generosity and persistency of the neighbor and ate the food. The dogs strength returned. But so did a love for its neighbor.

The two became like best friends.

Get out of the doghouse.

Reach out to your friends today!

One of the hardest things any of us can do is make adjustments. Making adjustments to the way we do things often goes against the grain. It goes against the flow.

But as the saying goes: doing things the way you usually do gets you the results you usually get.

And doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results, is a no win situation.

But improvement is possible when we are willing to change the way we do things and get the necessary guidance to do so.

There are so many benefits from getting advice from consultation.

One problem is that consults often get a bad rap. People tend to be suspicious of the financial motives of paid advisors when they get paid for advice.

The truth may very well be that people have a hard time making changes in the first place.

Today our guests are wearing consultant caps.

We are on location again at GYVR! Joining us on our podcast are Andy Day, from the law firm Bender Day & Cullimore, and Arthur Warsoff, owner of Trans World Business Advisors of Utah County.

Listen as we find out how an ounce of prevention, following sound advice, avoids so many pitfalls and problems.

When we use the word "Consolation" we could be referring to consolation prizes.

For today's episode, however, we want to define consolation as the sympathy and empathy extended to someone after a loss or disappointment.

But as significant as consolation is, we want to dig a little deeper.

We don't want to treat a symptom instead of a problem.

We don't just want to offer consolation, we want to look for a solution.

So, we came up with an anology we call the Shaken Soda Syndrome

Welcome Back!

We're back!

It's been a minute.

It's Throwback Thursday!

As we launch another new year it is always surprising how many things are making a comeback.  Mostly by way of fashion and interior design, but every so often something fun and "retro" finds its way back on the shelves and back into our homes.

For some it's new years resolutions. For some it's things like vinyl records.
But when nostalgic contraptions from our past find their way into our present it is both fun to reflect and maybe poke a little fun at them, as we rehash and relive moments from our past.

We love the consistency of holidays and holiday traditions with all the chaos in our lives it is nice that there is some consistency.

If 2022 this was People Watching People Podcast

Then in 2023 let’s do something kinda retro.

Let's call it the People Reaching People Podcast

peoplereachingpeople

People reaching out to people.

Calling into the podcast or call out on the podcast.

And the reason it is retro

And needs to make a comeback

Is we take for granted our devices and don’t reach out to people with them.

justcheckingin.

We are back at GYVR today for another Grill & Chill.

Because we love the culture of GYVR!

My father, Dr. K once stated: "The most essential educational experience a child can have in elementary education is Show & Tell."

He also said in order to effectively explain something you need to break it down & sum it up.

Today we are going to do the math and break down some more numbers.

All in search of a magic formula.

There is a magic formula.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Did you know there are only 12 tones in Western Music?

All pitches originate from one of these tones.

But look at the astounding amount of brilliant music that has resulted from only 12 notes.

The Western Alphabet derived from the Greek Alphabet has only 24 letters.

Look at the near endless amount of literature that has been written from only 24 letters.

There are only 3 primary colors (blue, red, yellow) with a total of 24 named colors on a color wheel.

Yet the human eye can distinguish nearly 7,000,000 color variations. Add to that the infinite works of art that start with only 24 standard colors.

Tones, letters and colors can be organized into formulas.

One type of formula can be a routine.
One type of formula can be a method.
One type of formula can be a regulator.
One type of formula can be a system.
One type of formula can be an application.

Today we are going to focus on systems and applications.

And we are on location at Guru Technologies to do just that.

First, Disneyland one more time.

To improve the guest experience, Disney turned to technology.

Disney is one of Guru Technologies past clients.

Certain systems like Disneyland lines evolved into stand by lines, Fast Passes, Lightening Lanes, and virtual queues.

For food purchases, Disney also adopted mobile ordering apps. They became self check out kiosks in your hand.

Hand held self check out registers.

Paper tickets iterated to virtual tickets and now Magic Bands.

Find out how before Covid-19, health care was a closed loop system much like proprietary operating systems, like Windows, in the past. The emergence of Linux, an open source operating system, that powers Android helped even the operating systems playing field.

Similarly, AWS --Amazon Web Services, "transformed web based businesses and made it so businesses didn't have to spend 10 million dollars on data centers, but could spend $200.00 on a credit card and get the same thing.

Thanks Trenton Cook and Guru Technologies for hosting us!

If you are going to take a trip to Disneyland during the holiday season, in addition to the cost of park admission, there are a lot of important numbers worth your attention.

Today we explore numbers again, this time in the context of Disneyland.

And, we are on location at Academy Mortgage

which is all about numbers.

Thanks Angie Thorpe and Academy Mortgage for hosting us!

Some numbers:
Date of departure
Vacation days
Number of bags
Weight of checked bags
Flight number
Seat Number
Boarding Number
Gate Number
Departure time
Arrival time
Flight duration

Time zone change
Shuttle bus number
Hotel address
Hotel check in time/check out time
Hotel floor number
Room number

Number of Days in Disneyland
Disney Park hours
Park hopper time
Ride wait times
Height requirements to ride

Temperature
Percentage chance of rain
Start times for lighting ceremony, World of Color, Fantasmic, theater shows, fireworks

Number of steps, miles walked each day
Cost of food
Cost of souvenirs

The magic of Disney, however, isn't quantified in numbers.

The magic is the guest experience.

People respond better the way they are treated.

Guests and park employees alike.

The magic of Disney is about treating people as guests.

If someone tells you there is no magic formula for success, don’t listen to them.

There is a magic formula, you just have to be open to it.

We have talked a lot about words.

We have made up a few words like confluencer and collaboratory.

And made lists of words that start with letters like B, E & R.

What about numbers?

When we say "word count" or "character limits" what do we mean?

Who would have thought numbers have anything to do with words?

And then algorithms and analytics came along

And time limits.

Even Ted Talks have time limits

In fact, we have talked before about time of possession: giving time of possession to the person you are talking to.

Have you heard of the books the "12 Week Year" or the "5 Second Rule"?

It seems that numbers and counting have everything to do with words.

In fact, in some instances numbers are more powerful than words.

Today we talk about the Scarlet Number.

And, of course that is a play on words from the title of a famous book The Scarlet Letter, a work of historical fiction by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1850.

What are the Scarlet Numbers in your profession?  Personal life?

Listen to find out how life is measured by the numbers.

After one year of doing observing others podcasts, we have learned and relearned, over and over again, that the most powerful conversations are about giving another person time of possession.

Better yet, let's call it time of attention.

Compare these two phrases: Seeking attention and paying attention.

Which is more powerful:
attention seeking
or
attention to detail?

When you give another person time of possession you shift the attention from you to them. The magic is in paying attention. Listening is the secret sauce. It is in the attention to detail that makes the thing shine.

Attention to detail.

What does that really mean?

Come listen to a tale of a attention to detail that started in a garage, but rose above the pack to finds its place among the best in the business!

It's the all American success story!

With a lot of fine foreign wheels along the way.

Mostly, it is the result of hard work and attention to detail.

We think attention to detail is more than just the "fine tooth comb" approach.

It is the kind of "white glove treatment" customers deserve.

And, today see how Blake and Coatic-Lab Automotive Studio delivers!

Today we podcast from a beautiful location!

A place where customers come first!

And it shows.

Especially in the show room!

But we began our podcast by calling out some bad behavior.

We used a lot of "B" words.

They are like the Bs of Bad Behavior.

The terribles.

The Terrible B's

Here were a few. Begging, Bragging, Bashing, Bullying, Belittling, Beguiling, Bemoaning, Behooving.

Beware of them.

(we left out bribing!)

You will find these Bs all over social media. These B's are what not to wear (ie what not to say) they are the poorest way to get people's attention or used as persuasion.

We can all fall victim to them on Facebook, LinkedIn etc.

They are the worst ways to promote self.

You have seen the nature of these kinds of posts. Those who bash others seem to think by making someone else look bad it, in some way, boosts their own value. But, exactly the opposite occurs. Those who bash their former employers, their EXs etc.

They may get some attention, but it is still a poor way to promote anything positive.

Then there are the beggars whose posts seem to always be about pleas for money or suggestions or or pretty much anything that the needy person needs. We may unfollow and even unfriend those who spend too much time begging and taking. It may not be as bad as bashing, but it certainly is a close second.

Not too far from bashing and begging, one finds bragging in the form of pictures as well as words. Think of the friends you have who rarely post on Facebook, but when they do, it is always about some great accomplishment or some exotic place they have been. Perhaps it is the pattern of behavior of bashing and begging and bragging, not a specific post, that makes these poor forms of promotion such a turn off.

The rest of the B's are just as bad.

Beguiling (lying) Behooving (preachy) Bemoaning (complaining)

You get the picture.

But, by far, the worst form of drawing attention on social media is bullying. It is similar to bashing but cyberbullying is no different than it's horrible real life counterpart. Bullying is bullying no matter what form it takes.

Instead of these bad behaviors, we found a better word to talk about.

A word worth practicing.

The word is Finesse.

One definition of finesse is this: to do something in a subtle or delicate manner. In a lot of ways finesse is like a balancing acrobat on a tight wire. She is agile and gracefully, balancing ever so carefully so as not to fall. Or perhaps finesse is the dancer, working the room or dance floor, naturally avoiding stepping on toes or bumping into people.

If you are socially awkward in the first place, then your dance moves will look fake or forced, and you will, more than likely, bump into someone or step on someone with something you say or do.

You really only have two choices then. The two choices are the difference between success and failure. You can avoid dancing, altogether, or you can acquire the necessary dance steps, by learning and practicing.

At some point, with consistent effort, you will be able to, effortlessly, move about the dance floor, with finesse, and gain the necessary influence to succeed.

Finessse walks the fine line to not fall into the behavior patterns of bashing, begging, bragging, bullying, bribing or beguiling.

Add Finesse to the Prop and you have the secret sauce!

Pretending hides problems.

Especially financial ones.

Which escalates a pretending and spending death spiral.

But there is a way to address and reverse that.

It requires pulling up some plants to look at the roots of the problems.

Most of the roots are emotional.

Much of the root of the problem is behavior.

In todays podcast, Dr. Chelsea Adams and I pull on a few of these roots.

We may even hit a nerve or two.

♤ Immediate gratification
♡ What other people think
◇ Make yourself feel better/feel better about yourself
♧ Covet and compare
♤ Want what you can’t have
♡ Can’t buy love
◇Money doesn’t buy happiness

Immediate gratification, for example, misses the power of compounding interest. Instant gratification seeks immediate returns making some bitcoin speculation and day trading closer to gambling rather than long term investing.

Perspective helps keep us from panic. It keeps us level headed when life seems upended. It stops the doping by shopping and pretending & spending.

Find out more about a simple behavior changing habit stacking solution in today’ podcast.

Take a personal inventory.
And start your streak today!

Last spring I had a booth in a B2B trade show in Davis County. The marketing phrase I used was "Bringing Smiles Back".

The word "back" seems to indicate the smiles went somewhere. Maybe the smiles had just been hiding behind masks for two years. Maybe they disappeared because of inflation, a divisive election, an evil war, mass shootings, or a housing crisis.

These would all be very good reasons--reasons not to smile.

But what if I told you my booth was a glimpse of and a blast from my past?

When I was seven, my father, Dr K, took me to the Salt Palace to see a booth he had set up. I had no idea what I was about to experience. When I turned the corner and saw his booth it took my breath away. There in all its glory and grandeur was a booth filled with objects as in pillows, a shower curtain, a huge area rug, a bedroom trash can, desk items and signage filled with little yellow smiley faces. Yellow smiles everywhere!

His booth was twice the size of mine. Complete with a couch, a chair, and a lamp with a shade and, you guessed it, smiley faces on the lamp shade!

So, I decided to bring his smile back. He is 84 now. He doesn't remember much but when I paid him a visit and showed him my pics, he did, in fact, smile. A big cheesy grin!

His experiment back then, as a social psychologist, in the 70's, was to see how many people actually smiled when they saw his booth. It had such an impact on me I would never forget it and some 40 years later I decided to bring it back.

So I found what I could, customized what I couldn't and brought smiles back!

Including two big yellow balls.

Later these two yellow balls ended up hanging out in my friend Alex’s hospital room.

They made the journey with me to visit my friend because the only reason they are smiling is because my good friend put those smiles on their faces.

That's right, he printed the vinyl and slapped them on these mammoth inflated balls.

They joined me because that same friend recently suffered a massive stroke.

The doctor told me today that this type of stroke is the most deadly.

My friend is fortunate to have survived.

So I brought my two smiley friends to bring some smiles back to my friend and his family.

Two yellow smile balls to his hospital room to cheer him up and cheer him on.

A few months later I was burnt in a propane tank explosion and fire.

Wouldn’t you know, one of the yellow smile balls Alex and I made showed up in my hospital room.

Now, as Alex and I recover, we are making yellow smile balls for others to cheer them on and cheer them up!

We are two of the fortunate ones.

We have a second chance.

A new lease on life.

There is so much to smile about!

Certain Points in our life define us more than others!

Some moments may appear to many as setbacks in life when in actuality they can be pivot points to launch us into something even better.

In this episode of Observing Others, we talk with Lee Brasher about these moments in his life as he has launched multiple businesses and currently is the sole owner of Wasatch Prints in Clearfield, Utah.

Let me ask you this question: what do you do to talk to people you don’t know?

Today, on our Observing Others Podcast, our guests, Kolton & Amanda are an amazing young couple who spent 15 months talking to people they didn’t know.

And, get this, they did it by walking, on foot, from Georgia to Oregon!

That’s right, they literally walked across America!!

2918 miles!

Here is one takeaway for our podcast today: sometimes we have to be creative to create moments to have campfire conversations.

It takes being present, being willing, and being positive!

And, when it works, it works wonderfully!

You don’t have to walk across America to do it.

Listen to an inspiring story of the couple who did!

One of todays podcast guests is an elephant in the room.

Yes, there is an elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about.

But it is the truth.

And once you can see Dumbo you will be less of a dumbo.

Everyone has phone cameras.

Everyone could be recording videos.

Short 15 second clips in length is all.

But, people don’t want help with making short reels,

but they want what short reels can do.

They can create branding, they can promote business, they can create opportunities.

They can increase income, improve communication, and help educate.

But people don’t seem want help with it. They don’t walk around singing or even thinking, “I want some video assistance, just gimme some, gimme some sweet sweet content assistance.”

No that’s not what they want. They want the outcome of Tiktok success, just not help with the content or delivery.

So their minds aren't thinking about content or solutions.

So the cameras aren't rolling.

It's an elephant in the room.

The key is to let them sample it.

One of our other guests, Jeremy Nehring with No Name Media is helping do just that.

Jeremy is taking short 15 second clips to help promote a B2B Expo coming up on April 14th.

And rather than promising virual video breakthroughs, he gives samples of what short reels look like and what short reels can do.

Find out more about the elephant in the room and how your business can benefit from videos and from participating in this years Business to Business Expo.

Plus, our port-a-podcast is at On Pitch Performing Arts. Thank you Danielle for hosting!

So, today we are talking today about first impressions.

You may have heard of the 10 Second Rule

But what about the 10 Second Pitch?

People tend to size you up in the first 10 seconds they meet you.

And, if that isn’t pressure enough, studies in Psychology reveal that people want to believe their first impression was correct in the first place. So, changing someone’s mind is harder than making a good impression in the first place.

On today’s episode we discuss the importance of content and delivery, as well as, the need to polish your pitch!

Decentralizing Content

Could big online platforms such as Facebook, SnapChat, TikTok and YouTube have reached multi-billion-dollar valuations without the content posted by their users?

Those users—whose posts, photos, and videos give platforms, such as Facebook, its value, those users do not directly own the platform, however.

The owners of centralized online platforms have provided tools that allow creative individuals to share content, build an audience and earn money in a myriad of ways, which in turn increases the platforms profits. Those platforms are now worth an estimated 100 billion dollars.

There are an estimated 50 million career creators around the world, and it is the fourth most-sought-after career, for example, among British children aged 7-11.

Known as the creator economy, creators’ impact is eclipsing that of traditional media. Some YouTube channels, for example, have over 30 million subscribers, and some of the most popular videos have more than 2 billion views.

Contrast that by the average daily numbers of those who watch prime time news.

Despite the direct contribution to the overall value of these platforms as the result of uploading massive amounts of content that engages, content creators who contribute see very little of the profits.

Imagine a future in which creator platforms are owned and operated by its users, who collectively build, operate, and co-own the platforms. This would shift the balance of power between centralized platforms and their minions of users.

According to an article in the Economist by Li Jin, Founder of Atelier Ventures:

“To date, co-operative ownership has struggled because of challenges in scaling up decision-making and governance, and in attracting investment. But new technologies promise to remove these barriers. Decentralized networks, like those that underpin cryptocurrencies, allow ownership to be distributed via tokens, which are earned for contributions to the network and which often confer governance rights. It may sound futuristic and abstract, but it is already happening.

In 2022 new, decentralized networks serving the creator economy will reach a tipping-point. The democratization of wealth-building assets through token distribution is an appealing prospect. For innovators, rewarding users with ownership can help attract the enormous user bases that will enable these new platforms to outcompete existing, centralized ones. Creator ownership eliminates the conflict between platforms and participants and ensures that growth benefits all stakeholders. In the coming months and years, creators will realize and harness their power, leading to the birth of a new set of platforms that confer ownership and control—and treat creators as first-class citizens.”

Intended Audience

Just as a content platform should be concerned about its content creators, the content creators should be just as concerned about their intended audience.

Creating a User Utopia is a high ideal. Uniformly giving all content equal opportunity, however, waters down the demand for content due to a humongous oversupply.

And content doesn’t automatically sell itself. Even though automation and artificial intelligence will continue to disrupt every field, quality content will need to rise to the surface in order to stand out from the crowded field.

For quality content to rise above the seemingly never-ending stream of quantity supply, a greater consideration for the intended audience should be more important than ever.

Today we are podcasting from Tucanos Farmington. It’s our Port-A-Podcast!

Tucanos is the place with the two tone little wooden blocks!

The primary features of these little wooden blocks are the bold green and red colors, one at each end, that act as signals to a meat server at this Brazilian grill.

It is such a great system: Green side up means you are ready for more meat. Red side up, you are taking a break.

Like raising your hand, the little red/green signaler communicates effectively without having to keep your hand raised the whole time or feel like you always have to be watching for a server to wave down.

This little signaler is a prop. It’s a facilitator.

It reminds us of the flight attendant button above the seat on an airplane. Just push the button and wait. No need for continually scanning the entire cabin for assistance.

It is sort of like the little red flag on your mailbox. You’ve got outgoing mail!

Sending and receiving signals are nothing new.

The idea that communication is a two-way thing isn’t either.

The “talking” part of two-way is obvious, but, often, the listening part is not.

Reciprocity is another word for two-way.

Many people forget that reciprocity also includes listening. There is reciprocation in listening. Listening should be a key part of the process not an exception.

But in today’s high-tech world, there are plenty of people with things to say than people ready to listen.

Genuine listening, however, is the gateway to focused observation. And, to listen & learn is more than simply paying attention, it is as much about understanding people as it is about content.

There is an art to skilled listening. The art of skilled listening includes the art of understanding others

It helps when there is a little red & green prop that signals and facilitates expectations.

It also helps to have a good atmosphere, like Tucanos, where you can meet and greet (or meat & great. . .meat and eat) in a formal, yet relaxed venue.

The venue is as important as the menu.

That is why we enjoy both here at Tucanos Farmington

In just two days 11th ranked University of Utah Football team plays 6th ranked Ohio State in the University of Utah’s first ever trip to the Rose Bowl!

The Rose Bowl and all the celebrations surrounding it are such honored New Year’s Day traditions. The unmatched Rose Bowl Parade has been a cherished favorite of mine. Personally, I have marched with marching bands in parades and have even designed and built float, but never in the Rose Bowl Parade.  To me, it is the granddaddy of them all!

The University of Utah is my Alma Mater. Years ago, not only did I march with the Ute marching band, I was asked by the Director of Bands to design one of the University of Utah half time marching band field shows.  It was the first time I was able to design and perform in one of my own halftime shows!

In addition to that, on a separate occasion, I also designed a float for one of the University of Utah’s Homecoming Parades.

There is an interesting characteristic of both parades and half-time marching band field shows. With regards to parades, each float is individual and unique, but no parade exists with just one float or just one marching band.

During the years that I marched with my own high school marching band, one of the slogans I remember was: “The band is nothing without the individual and the individual is nothing without the band.” This mantra was specific to the field show marching band because when someone was missing from the drill formation, it was obvious to everyone from the stands. Hence, the group is nothing without the individual, the individual is nothing without the group. It was obvious because there was a gap, space, or as we called it a “hole” where the person missing was supposed to be marching. Just as it would have been impossible for one person to represent an entire formation, it was often impractical to march with too many holes when too many band members were missing.

As great as the University of Utah marching band may be, the real treat on January 1st will be to watch the incredible formations of the Ohio State Marching Band during their halftime performance.  Ohio State halftimes are beyond extraordinary—they are legendary. Ohio State has done tributes to famous musicians like Michael Jackson and the rock band Rush.  But, beyond the music they play, the formations the marching band makes and moves as they play are unparalleled and unmatched by any other college marching band!

Not only do the formations Ohio State creates require great precision, they also require each player to be in its proper place.  The collective needs the individual.

Then there is the Rose Bowl Parade. Each year tens of thousands of hours are devoted to building floats for Pasadena’s Rose Parade. If you haven’t watched the parade recently you have missed the detailed descriptions of all the natural fruits, plants, vegetables, nuts, even honey, that are used on these floats. These elaborate ingredients are in addition to the traditional roses and other flowers. The float rules haven’t really changed after all these years: parade floats are still required to have only fresh, real, optimally organic materials used to decorate the exterior of the floats. But the creative ways that naturally produced materials have been introduced and incorporated into the float building has evolved fantastically.

And with so many natural ingredients, it would be impossible to build a float alone in a short time frame.  Float building for the Rose Parade requires volunteers.

While float building is a volunteer project and the main focus of the preparations for the parade, there is a little-known by-product from all this float building activity. Marriages!

It’s TRUE! Each year there are a number of engagements and marriages that result from the matchmaking that occurs during the endless hours of community float building. There is something about work

Think of the times in your life when you faced what appeared to be impossible tasks and you felt as if it were you, alone, against the world.

Now imagine that you are a professional baseball player and you, alone, are up to bat at the plate getting ready for the pitch.

The ball coming at you is the challenge that you face.

Are you ready? How do you react?

Perhaps your first thought isn’t about the ball at all, but that it is a player vs player moment–pitcher against the batter. And, while there is some truth to that, the nature of baseball isn’t really that at all.

Although the batter only gets 3 strikes before he is out, that is not where the real pressure is coming from. If he looks out across the baseball field, it isn’t the pitcher, alone that he is facing: there are 9 other opposing players playing defense to this one player on offense.

It really is nine against one if he even hits the ball at all.

And, while 3 strikes and 4 balls and 9 players, playing defense, may still seem like pretty good odds, there is also a stadium filled with spectators, surrounding and starring at that batter, many of whom do not want the player up to bat to hit anything.

The reality is, all those bystanders in the stands are anxiously awaiting the outcome of each pitch.

Therefore, the pressure on the batter, up to bat, is more than the 9 on the field but it includes all the eyes in the stands, on the batter up to bat both friend and foe.

Wait, there’s more.

If all this wasn’t pressured enough, what if the game was being televised for local, national, or even international audiences? The more you think about it, there could be millions and millions of people with all eyes on the batter watching and waiting to see the results of one individual player's performance.

Nine opponents, plus the people in the stands, plus all the viewers watching on TV–with that large number it would seem like incredible pressure to perform.

What goes through the mind of that batter will ultimately determine the outcome. His reaction to the pressure and the pitch may seem like a reflex reaction, but the truth is, if the batter has been preparing, that proactive preparation has happened long before that player takes the plate.

This should serve as a reminder that the skills necessary to succeed at anything take preparation and practice long before the heat of the moment.

At times the tasks we face in life, in the heat of the moment, may feel like it is you against the world and the numbers really aren’t in your favor. The odds seem stacked against you in this very competitive world.

But just as there are great home run hitters, there are those that excel in all walks of life because they really aren’t alone, they just need a team behind them and the skills that will take them where they want to go and what they need to do to get there.

You can embrace the times you are up to bat, even in the heat of the moment, by believing that success is possible by strengthening the skill set necessary to succeed.

One key is to understand is that there are few pinch hitters who will do the heavy lifting for you. You must become your own designated hitter.

Learning to stand up, stand strong, and stand solo isn’t a punishment or a prison sentence, it is strength training. Those moments may stretch you, test you, and push you, but these are the moments that will define you and refine you. These are the moments that will help you grow.

Haven’t all of us felt like we were in the middle of an epic tug of war? Stuck in the middle of two opposing forces pulling us back and forth in either direction?

Sometimes it is simply outside influences triggering inward emotional responses, perhaps anger at another driver, misplacing an important item or document, missing a flight.

Sometimes it is a psychosomatic tug of war between mind and body, the “flesh is weak” kind of thing. Sometimes it’s a tug of war between thoughts on the one hand and feelings on the other.

One of the greatest overarching tug of wars that has been debated between scientists and others for centuries is between the opposing forces of nature and nurture.

What about the tug of war between making appointments and setting schedules at one extreme end and cancellations and disruptions to schedules found on the opposite end?

In every economy, there is a constant push-pull of two forces at work (and it isn’t just supply and demand). It’s GETTING THE WORK vs DOING THE WORK

Think of this as the old see-saw or teeter-totter phenomenon. The up and down, back and forth motion of getting and doing income-producing activities: getting the working and doing the work. Marketing/Manufacturing. Unfortunately, sometimes there is a tension or tug of war between these two forces. They are like the roots and branches of a tree, both needing attention.

What about starting a business? Often a start-up or business launch is a lot like a boat launch. Cash flow on the one hand and keeping up with the competition often creates an internal tug of war. It is the exasperating
the feeling of one foot on the boat and one foot on the dock, as the boat, appears to be pulling away.

And this balancing act battlefield of what often seems like an either/or proposition can be a tug
of war battlefield.
