What happens when your identity has always been tied to being an athlete?

In this deeply meaningful conversation, Cynthia sits down with former Division I tennis player, author, speaker, and eating disorder advocate Betsy Brenner to discuss how years of perfectionism, athlete identity, and a lifetime of "earning" food eventually led to an eating disorder in midlife.

Betsy shares how returning to competitive tennis in her 40s reignited old beliefs around body image, discipline, and performance. When severe asthma suddenly prevented her from exercising, her fear of weight gain intensified, eventually leading to a diagnosis of anorexia.

Together, Cynthia and Betsy explore why so many women unknowingly carry athlete mindsets long after competitive sports end—and why healing requires so much more than changing what's on your plate.

In this episode you'll learn:• Why eating disorders don't only happen to teenagers

• How athlete identity can shape your relationship with food for decades

• The connection between perfectionism, anxiety, and overexercise

• Why many women feel they must "earn" their food

• How movement can become a coping mechanism instead of self-care

• The role vulnerability plays in recovery

• Why aging and body changes can trigger disordered eating

• How parents can model healthier relationships with food and exercise

• Why recovery is about far more than weight restoration

One of the most powerful messages from this episode is that it's never too late to become a work in progress. Betsy's story offers hope for any woman who has spent years believing her worth depends on performance, discipline, or the number on the scale.

Can you recover your period after more than a decade?

Cynthia sits down with former client GNic who shares her remarkable journey from losing her menstrual cycle for 14 years to welcoming her miracle baby.

As a professional dancer, GNic spent years believing that being smaller meant being more successful. The pressure to maintain a certain body led to years of restrictive eating, excessive exercise, and eventually Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA). Despite visiting multiple doctors, she was repeatedly dismissed, told to return only when she wanted children, and even informed she was entering early menopause.

Everything changed when she committed to true recovery.

Together, Cynthia and GNic discuss the physical and emotional realities of recovering from HA, overcoming the fear of weight gain, rebuilding trust with your body, and discovering that healing involves far more than simply eating more and exercising less.

The episode ends with the moment neither of them will ever forget: after years of infertility and several recovery cycles, Gnic took one more pregnancy test and it was positive.

In this episode you'll learn:• Why Hypothalamic Amenorrhea often goes undiagnosed
• How one comment about body size changed the course of Jeannic's life
• The connection between under-fueling, overtraining, and missing periods
• Why recovering your period isn't simply about gaining weight
• The hidden role perfectionism and athlete identity play in HA
• What recovery actually looks like beyond food and exercise
• Why community and coaching can accelerate healing
• How Jeannic conceived naturally after years without a menstrual cycle
• Why it's never too late to begin period recovery

If you've ever wondered whether recovery is possible even after years without a period—this conversation will leave you feeling hopeful.

In this episode, I welcome back Dr. Chrisandra Shufelt, one of the world's leading researchers in Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, to discuss exciting new findings from the largest HA studies to date.

For years, women with missing periods have been told to simply "go on birth control" or have struggled to find answers from healthcare providers. Now, new research is beginning to uncover what HA is really doing to the body—and why recovery matters far beyond fertility.

Together, we discuss:

• The largest Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea studies to date
• Early findings on heart and cardiovascular health
• Why stress plays a significant role in recovery
• What researchers discovered about eating patterns in women with HA
• Bone health, inflammation, and long-term health risks
• The most common symptoms women report beyond a missing period
• Why HA remains dramatically under-researched
• How you can contribute to future research through the international HA registry

Whether you're currently recovering from HA, supporting someone who is, or you're a healthcare professional wanting the latest evidence, this conversation provides practical insights backed by emerging science.

The more we understand Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, the better we can support women in recovering not only their periods—but their long-term health.

In this episode, Lauren shares her journey through Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) recovery and the surprising realization that getting her period back required more than simply eating more and exercising less.

Cynthia Donovan sits down with Dr. Jen Gaudiani, physician and author of Sick Enough, to unpack one of the most misunderstood aspects of hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA): you do not need to have an eating disorder to lose your period.

Together, they explore how under-nutrition, over-exercise, stress, and biological individuality can disrupt menstrual cycles, even in women who believe they are eating “healthy” and doing everything “right.” Dr. Gaudiani explains the physiology behind hypothalamic amenorrhea, including how the brain downregulates reproductive hormones when energy availability is too low, and why this can happen across a wide spectrum of body types and lifestyles.

This episode challenges the harmful belief that you are “not sick enough” to deserve help, and reframes missing periods as a critical early warning sign of metabolic and hormonal adaptation, not failure.

You’ll also learn how HA often shows up with invisible symptoms like anxiety, perfectionism, cold intolerance, poor sleep, slowed digestion, and low energy, even when labs appear normal. Most importantly, this conversation highlights what recovery actually requires: not perfection, but physiological safety, nourishment, and nervous system support.

If you’ve ever been told your symptoms “aren’t serious enough,” or you’ve struggled with losing your period while being active, disciplined, or high-performing, this episode will help you finally make sense of what your body is trying to communicate.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Why hypothalamic amenorrhea can occur without an eating disorder
  • The role of energy availability in menstrual health
  • “Sick enough” thinking and why it delays recovery
  • Invisible symptoms of under-nutrition (even with normal labs)
  • Metabolic adaptation and why the body slows down
  • How the brain prioritizes survival over reproduction
  • Bone health risks and hormonal suppression in HA
  • Why comparison to others is misleading biologically
  • The identity shift required for full recovery
  • How to talk to providers who may not understand HA
  • Supporting adolescents and breaking generational diet culture patterns

About the Guest:Dr. Jen Gaudiani is a physician specializing in eating disorders and complex medical complications of under-nutrition. She is the author of Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders, now in its updated second edition. (https://amzn.to/4waPFVf)

She is the founder of the Gaudiani Clinic, where she and her team support patients across the United States with eating disorders, hypothalamic amenorrhea, and complex medical presentations related to energy deficiency.

In this conversation, Cynthia and Silba break down the reasons for pleasure feeling like such a taboo topic for many women. They explore the ties between body connection and true intimacy with yourself or with a partner.

Pleasure not just as a fleeting experience; it's a natural state of being that arises from alignment with oneself. Silba shares her personal journey of reconnecting with her body. The discussion also delves into the distinction between real pleasure, which nourishes and satisfies, and hijacked pleasure, which offers temporary satisfaction but leaves one feeling empty. The conversation emphasizes the significance of mindfulness and self-awareness in cultivating a deeper sense of pleasure and intimacy in relationships, but also deconditioning societal norms that disconnect individuals from their bodies. They discuss the importance of reconnecting with one's body the way that babies and children innocently do so we can get back to the ongoing nature of personal growth and self-acceptance.

Silba is a behavioural scientist, somatic coach, and sensuality educator passionate about helping ambitious women with a big heart reconnect to their bodies, rekindle their pleasure, and reclaim their full feminine expression so they can safely be themselves.

With eleven years of experience in human fulfilment—first as a consultant for organizations in London and for the past six years working 1:1 with clients and leading talks and workshops worldwide, Silba brings a unique blend of science, storytelling, and accessible strategies. Maintaining personal health can often feel like a secondary priority, especially if you have a physically demanding job. Sophie, a former military personnel, shares her transformative journey from strict discipline to a balanced lifestyle, emphasizing the importance of personal well-being.

Sophie’s story begins with her rigorous routine of intense exercise and strict dieting, driven by the pressures of military expectations. She recalls, "I was so committed to working out, maybe even three times a day, always getting my run in." This relentless pursuit of fitness, however, led to a disconnection from her own body and health.

The turning point came when Sophie realized the need for a mindset shift. She began to view food as fuel and exercise as an opportunity rather than an obligation. "I was able to see food as fuel and exercise as something I got the opportunity to do," she reflects. This change not only helped her regain her health but also enriched her personal relationships and overall life satisfaction. She began to enjoy life so much more. She wanted to be around other people more and that's what really made her feel like she'd come back to herself.

Imagine living in a world where your body feels like it's constantly on high alert, even when there's no immediate danger. This is the reality for many experiencing nervous system dysregulation. In a recent conversation with Kelly Burnett, a nervous system coach, we explored how this condition affects women, particularly those dealing with anxiety, chronic symptoms, and burnout.

Kelly shared her personal journey of battling severe health issues, from chronic pain to brain fog, which she later discovered were rooted in a dysregulated nervous system. This condition often goes unnoticed, as symptoms are mistakenly attributed to other health issues. For many women, especially high achievers, the pressure to excel can exacerbate these symptoms, leading to hormonal imbalances and menstrual health issues.

Healing isn't just about diet and exercise; it's about compassion and connection. Kelly emphasizes the importance of self-love and acceptance in the healing process. Simple practices like journaling, gentle movement, and spending time in nature can significantly support recovery. These practices help individuals reconnect with their bodies and recognize patterns that contribute to their stress.

Kelly suggests starting with small, manageable changes. Somatic tracking, a practice of observing bodily sensations without judgment, can be a powerful tool. Additionally, creating rituals like applying lotion before bed can foster a sense of safety and self-care. These practices, though simple, can make a profound difference in calming the nervous system.

Understanding and addressing nervous system dysregulation is a journey of self-discovery and healing. By tuning into our bodies and embracing self-love, we can begin to alleviate the symptoms that have long been misunderstood. As Kelly's story illustrates, healing is possible, and it starts with small, intentional steps.

Kelly Burnett is a nervous system coach and the founder of Kelly Burnett Health, where she helps women self-heal from chronic pain, anxiety, and fatigue by teaching them the A-Z roadmap to rewiring their brains and regulating their nervous systems. She is a graduate of the renowned Institute for Integrative Nutrition and has spent the last seven years specializing in nervous system regulation and brain retraining.

After overcoming her own struggles with anxiety and chronic illness, Kelly discovered that many unexplained chronic symptoms are actually linked to a dysregulated nervous system—a connection often overlooked in traditional medicine. Now, she is bridging the gap between chronic symptoms and true healing through brain retraining, somatic practices, nervous system regulation and more. By helping women shift out of survival mode and teaching them how to cultivate safety in their brains, Kelly empowers them to reclaim their health and finally feel at home in their bodies again.

Today we are so excited to have Dr. Nicola Sykes revisit the podcast! She's here to encourage women with a missing period to get the care they need by clearing up some all-too common misunderstandings.

Dr. Sykes also shares insights from her article Where AI Gets it Wrong:https://www.noperiodnowwhat.com/post/where-ai-gets-it-wrong

HA Studies referenced in the podcast:

Amenorrhea-Related Cardiovascular Health (ARCH) study: http://noperiod.info/ARCH - intake questionnaire

https://www.mayo.edu/research/clinical-trials/cls-20538611

This study aims to evaluate heart health in young women with missed menstrual periods. It is a non-interventional, observational study that hopes to further understand how young women with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea may be at a greater risk for developing cardiovascular disease through a non-invasive test that assesses blood vessel health. In addition to exploring heart health, the study also aims to measure the patterns of psychosocial stress (patient reported questionnaires), physical activity (Fitbit Versa 4 watch), and caloric nutrition (3-day food diary) that contribute to the development of the condition. Participation involves two in-person visits in a three-month period to Mayo Clinic Florida with a study-provided travel stipend.

Registry of Very Early Estrogen Loss and AnovuLation (REVEAL): http://noperiod.info/REVEAL - intake questionnaire

https://www.mayo.edu/research/clinical-trials/cls-20570285

This study involves completely remote participation, where we hope to build a registry of women with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea to understand the prevalence, racial and ethnic diversity, underlying causes, risk factors, prognosis, and recurrence of this condition. With a goal of 100,000 women with HA, we hope that the registry reflects the widespread distribution of the condition, and its subsequent need for attention from the medical community. In summary, participation involves a series of online questionnaires and 3-day food diary submissions at Baseline, Month 3, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, and Year 4. To confirm eligibility, we ask participants to submit bloodwork for review by our expert panel to determine if their hormone levels fall within the range associated with hypothalamic hypoestrogenism. If participants do not have recent bloodwork, we will provide a study-funded at-home fingerstick blood test kit for screening purposes.

In this conversation, Cynthia and Hannah - The libido fairy discuss the topics of Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA), libido, and intimacy. They explore the connection between HA and the absence of menstrual periods, as well as the role of the hypothalamus in regulating the menstrual cycle. They emphasize the importance of nourishing the body with enough food and rest to support the recovery of HA.

Key Takeaways

  • Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) is a condition characterized by the absence of menstrual periods in women of reproductive age, and it can be caused by excessive exercise and inadequate nutrition.
  • Recovering from HA requires nourishing the body with enough food and rest to support all essential functions, including reproductive function.
  • Supporting the nervous system is crucial for both HA recovery and libido. Activities such as breathing exercises, meditation, and pleasurable experiences can help regulate the nervous system.
  • Intimacy and libido are not solely dependent on penetrative sex. Non-sexual touch, communication, and emotional vulnerability are important aspects of intimacy.
  • It is important to debunk myths about HA, such as the belief that the pill can treat it or that it only affects certain body types. HA can occur at any body size or type.
  • Listening to and honoring the body's needs and desires is essential for overall well-being and living a fulfilling life.

She initially experienced irregular periods after coming off birth control, which led her to make lifestyle changes. She stopped intermittent fasting, ate more balanced meals, and dialed back her intense exercise routine. Through these changes, she was able to regulate her cycle and conceive her first child. Sarah's perspective on exercise and eating has shifted, and she now focuses on enjoying movement, listening to her body, and being present with her children.

In this solo podcast episode, Cynthia discusses the five biggest myths and misconceptions surrounding hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) or missing periods. She starts by addressing the mainstream medical approach to HA, which often involves prescribing birth control pills. Cynthia emphasizes that her approach as a registered dietitian is different and aims to provide better information for making informed decisions. She also highlights that HA is a global issue and can affect individuals of all shapes and sizes. Cynthia then explores the misconception that HA is often misdiagnosed as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and the importance of asking the right questions to differentiate between the two conditions. She also addresses the misconception that getting your period back is only important for fertility, when in fact it has significant implications for overall health, including heart disease and osteoporosis. Cynthia also discusses the misconception that you don't need to gain weight or make further changes if you've already made some progress in recovering from HA. Lastly, she emphasizes the importance of seeking support and not giving up if you've tried various approaches and haven't seen progress in getting your period back.

Takeaways

  • The mainstream medical approach to hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) often involves prescribing birth control pills, but there are alternative approaches that focus on better information and individualized care.
  • HA is a global issue that can affect individuals of all shapes and sizes, not just those with low BMI or specific body types.
  • It is important to ask the right questions and differentiate between HA and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
  • Getting your period back is not just important for fertility, but also for overall health, including reducing the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis.
  • If you've already made some progress in recovering from HA, it may be necessary to make further changes, including weight gain, to fully restore your menstrual cycle.
  • Seeking support and not giving up are crucial if you've tried various approaches and haven't seen progress in getting your period back.

Welcome to another episode of the Period Recovery Podcast!

This week, I am joined by Brittany, a previous client of mine, to share her story! Graduating from my coaching program in the summer of 2022, she has now recovered her period for a solid year! Brittany retells her story of how she lost her period discovering HA and gaining it back while breastfeeding.

In our chat today, we brought up specific points to think about when it comes to period recovery:

  • Being a Crossfit Coach going through a Period Recovery
  • There are so many different and confounding factors that go into why we can lose our periods and one of them can be upbringing; it doesn’t have to be something physically said, but it can also be picked up by words their parents say or their actions, etc
  • If you don’t want to change or fix something, don’t go into coaching - this way, you aren’t wasting resources for someone who does actually want to change or fix something about themselves
  • The sooner you start to try and recover your period, the sooner you can move on

Welcome to another episode of the Period Recovery Podcast!

This week, I'm thrilled to share an inspiring conversation with Katrina, a remarkable former client of mine. Katrina grew up as an athlete & never thought her active & over-achieving lifestyle was hurting her. Katrina opens up about losing her period & how she got it back in record time. She also shares all of the challenges she faced when she lost her period and the triumphant moment she reclaimed it.

In our chat, Katrina shared some profound insights:

  • Recognizing that your struggles are valid can often start when someone you love acknowledges them. It helps solidify that your feelings are real and not just a figment of your imagination.
  • When others make judgments or comments behind your back, remember, it reflects more on them than on you. There's no obligation for you to accept or own others' perceptions of you.
  • Cling to your core values. In moments of adversity, let your beliefs guide and ground you, reminding you of who you are and what truly matters.
  • Join us as we navigate through these personal revelations and celebrate Katrina's journey toward healing and recovery!

Welcome to another heartening episode of the Period Recovery Podcast, just you and me! Today, I walk you through the physical and emotional landscapes of Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, a condition often characterized by a missing period. Let's unfold this together, embracing understanding and insight along the way.

Listen in to learn more:

  • What you think is healthy and what is actually healthy for your body are two different things; if your period is missing, how you are eating and how you are exercising can’t be healthy
  • While the rest of the world is out there, eating less and moving more while you are doing the opposite, it can be really draining and confusing; you need to have a supportive community to fight that
  • If you want to feel less stressed about food or body exercise, learn to find balance for food and exercise to fit in your life versus the other way around

In this week’s episode of the Period Recovery Podcast, I talk with Dr. Chisandra Shufelt, the Chair of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. She and I discuss some health disparities that come with a missing period.

Listen in to learn more:

  • [08:13] Heart disease. This area is understudied and underdiagnosed; women often don’t have symptoms of this condition and don’t seek treatment.
  • [16:54] HA doesn’t cause heart disease, but we’ve found that it can lead to heart disease; it’s a time and opportunity to prevent it, too
  • [42:15] Going on the pill masks the underlying condition [in this case, HA]; these women still have the condition, so they’re still walking around with high cortisol and other endocrine disruptors

About Dr. Chisandra Shufelt:

Dr. Shufelt is Professor and Chair of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and Associate Director of the Women's Health Research Center at Mayo Clinic Enterprise. She is a women’s health internist with fellowship training in vascular biology and women's health and a certified menopause practitioner. She has several National and International leadership roles in the American College of Physicians, the European Menopause and Andropause Society, and the North American Menopause Society, where she is the immediate past-President of the Society and on the board of trustees. Dr. Shufelt has over 200 publications in women’s health and has co-authored several scientific position statements on menopause and hormone therapy. Her NIH-funded research focuses on young women with hypothalamic amenorrhea evaluating the impact on immune and vascular health.

In this week’s episode of the Period Recovery Podcast, I’m not only talking to those that have a  missing period, but also those that have been affected by HA (hypothalamic amenorrhea) - your family, significant other, friends, and more. Hopefully, this episode is helpful to those to support further your loved one who may be dealing with a missing period.

I hope that you find this episode helpful.
Cynthia

Listen in to learn more:

  • [07;57] Food’s & exercise’s involvement in missing periods is independent of weight
  • [16:54] These women that are going through this know their body best; encourage them to trust their intuition and support them in whatever it is they may need
  • [27:48] She might not be ready to do these new things or have these new experiences; you have to find other ways to do stuff together or encourage her to do things that aren’t movement related - at first, this might be difficult, but encourage her to do these things

In this week’s episode of the Period Recovery Podcast, I am joined by Becca King - Becca is a registered dietician, nutritionist, and an adult diagnosed with ADHD. Together, we talk about everything surrounding ADHD, freedom and fears with food, and struggles!

I hope that today's episode is helpful for you!
Cynthia

Listen in to learn more:

  • [09:30] Dopamine, which is low in ADHD brains, is tied to estrogen, so when estrogen levels drop, dopamine levels drop - women with ADHD might notice that their cycle is significantly linked to their symptoms
  • [21:30] Folks who have ADHD have lower levels of interoceptive awareness - also known as the ability to pick up on body cues, including things such as hunger and needing to go to the bathroom
  • [35:25] Protein can be something a lot of people with ADHD struggle to get adequate amounts of; carbs are a source of dopamine, so people with ADHD enjoy carbohydrates, leading to their “preferred” foods being more in line with carbs

Becca King is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist from Charlotte, North Carolina. As an adult with ADHD, who struggled for years with disordered eating, Becca is passionate about helping other adults with ADHD who struggle with binge eating, chronic dieting, and body image issues find food freedom and improve their self-esteem. She uses the Principles of Intuitive Eating and a weight-inclusive approach to nutrition for ADHD in her virtual practice.

It can be so confusing navigating period recovery, especially when it comes to figuring out if you are getting closer. This episode is not in place of any medical advice; it's to become aware of signs and symptoms. I am giving some of my tips on things to be aware of the signs and symptoms and learn our bodies of the steps for recovery. Signs and symptoms come and go and could look different for everyone.

I hope you find this episode helpful!

Cynthia

Listen in to learn more:

  • [08:01] Let’s talk CM. All bodies are different; you might see periods of cervical mucus, periods of dryness, consistency changes, or the like. These are all things you can’t control - the color, the consistency, etc. - but you can control the things that affect those things in particular.
  • [16:11] Resolving Digestive Issues. Constipation is just your body’s way of conserving the energy within your body for the more essential thing such as your heartbeat, your brain’s functioning, your lungs breathing, etc.
  • [27:52] All loss is gain; you may not see it right now, but with the right context and capacity, things will eventually improve and turn more pleasant.

Molly & I give you practical tips to overcome this fear & so much more. Molly talks about the challenges of buying new clothes and the permission we need to give ourselves to gain weight & start living again.

Molly’s wellness journey started about a decade ago when she realized whatever was happening with her digestion was (shockingly) not normal. With some support from her boss at the time, She experimented with going gluten-free and felt infinitely better. I continued to experiment with what was going on in my belly and how she felt. She has dealt with some bumps in the road: digestive issues, fatigue, eczema, psoriasis, weight fluctuations, sugar cravings, body image issues, and disordered eating. Overcoming these obstacles has empowered Molly to help others find their sense of self and empowerment.
