Welcome to Hope Talks. We are so glad you have joined us. Hope Talks, a ministry of Church of the Nazarene, in Harrisonburg, VA. Our mission is to be transformed by God to bring hope to others through Christ. Our desire is to bring stories of hope to encourage you on your journey. In Revelation 12:11 we read these words, “And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony." This is a foundational passage for the program as we provide a space for believers to share stories/testimonies of God’s amazing grace in their lives. We pray this will be a half hour of hope for your life. Hope Talks airs every Sunday at noon on 1470 AM and 102.1 FM WBTX.
On today’s broadcast of Hope Talks we are joined by Pastor Brad Robertson. Pastor Brad is from Maryland and move to Lynchburg, Virginia to attend Liberty University for college. Brad got a bachelor's degree in biblical studies and then got a master's in special education. Brad worked for a few years as a special education teacher. Brad currently serves on staff as the connections pastor at Compassion Church of the Nazarene in Lynchburg, Virginia where he attends with his wife and their kids. Rich, Becky and their two kids moved to the valley this year from Kentucky where they were serving with athletes in action at Morehead State University. On today’s broadcast of Hope Talks we are joined by Kenneth Salmeron. Kenneth was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He and his siblings were raised by a single mother who is originally from Honduras. Kenneth and his siblings were raised in the church and he joins us today to share his testimony of how his involvement in church and in youth group helped him grow closer in his relationship with Jesus. On today’s broadcast of Hope Talks we are joined by Kyle Roth. Kyle was born and raised in Ephrata, Pennsylvania located in Lancaster County. Kyle married Ally and they had two kids Emmett and Owen. Shortly after Owen was born they found out that Ally had stage four colon cancer. A few months later she went to be with the Lord. A couple years later through mutual friends Kyle was introduced to Michelle who he is now married to. Kyle shares his testimony of how he felt God ‘s faithful love and gave him strength through all that he has gone through. We pray that today’s broadcast will be a half hour of hope for your life!

Search me, test me, uncover my sin, and lead me.
Today we are continuing in our teaching series called “The power of prayer” based on Psalm 139.
Prayer like we find here in Psalm 139 is very vulnerable. It’s a complete opening of ourselves to the Lord.
In Psalm 139 David is inviting the Lord behind the curtain, behind what even David himself knows, to search him, to test him, to uncover hidden sin, and to lead him. As David sought the Lord in these areas, we want to do that as well.
Throughout this series we are exploring and praying these four petitions: Search me, test me, uncover my sins, and lead me.
Today we conclude with “Lead me in the way everlasting."

You can sit in church and not listen. You can read your Bible and have no intention of cooperating. You can be very religious and still be very rebellious. We need to understand, from a biblical perspective, there is a consequence when we refuse to listen. Let's not be those people in this unique season. Let's decide to cultivate our listening skills. Listening to God is important.
Psalms 139:23-24
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
David asks God to lead him "in the way everlasting."
As David uses it here, this might mean the ancient way that godly men (and women) of the past followed.
This was the way that led ultimately to everlasting life, not as something to be gained by works but entered by grace.
The apostle Paul pursued the way God's will had laid out for him, and at the end of his life he anticipated entering everlasting life that is promised.
He testified in 2 Timothy 4:6–8 , "The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing"

Philippians 3:12-21
Living The Jesus Life
This series is a part of our annual practice of spending time focusing on one book of the Bible. In this case, the study is of Philippians – the letter Paul wrote from a Roman prison to the church at Philippi, the first church Paul started in Eastern Europe (see Acts 16). The people at Philippi were facing the resistance of Rome but remained a vibrant community of faith.
Philippians is a letter that speaks to living life as a disciple of Jesus in 2023. That's why we've entitled the series, 'Living the Jesus Life'.
Today's focus is Philippians 3:12-21
Last week we examined Chapter 3:1-12 and Paul’s rather impressive trophy case from his past. Before he met Christ, you might have thought he had it all going for him.
But for Paul, all those things he used to count on- Things that he thought made him in right relationship with God- he now considers them like garbage.
Paul learned what we all must learn: Religion has no power to save anyone.
As we continue in our text today, Paul also wants his readers to understand- He is not putting himself on a pedestal as if he has checked all the boxes.
Quite the opposite. He makes it perfectly clear that he has not arrived, and he is not taking his eye off the prize.
Philippians 3:12-14
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Throughout chapter 3 Paul has been using his own life, his own story as a teaching example for his friends in Philippi. With all he had accomplished for the Lord, with all the suffering he had endured- it would be easy to imagine that he had just decided to take it easy. Nobody would blame him.
But far from taking it easy- He’s giving it all he’s got, like an Olympic runner in a race.
He has not arrived, he doesn’t feel like he’s made it to any superstar status, he is striving to fulfill his calling in loving and serving the Lord.
“But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind”
The Apostle boils it all down to ONE THING. That should speak volumes to us. Paul had gotten to witness enough track meets to know the truth that the Miracle Mile and John Landy proved in 1954
You cannot look back.
“Forgetting what is behind” meant no counting of past achievements, and not being burdened by past failures. Focus forward!
As necessary and true as it was for Paul, it is true for you and me.
We cannot live the life God has calls us too, we cannot lean into the future, and we cannot hope to win the prize, if we are stuck or chained down by the past.
The Jesus life Is not lived looking back.
“Straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
As much conscious effort and decision it takes to forget the past- it takes that much more to lean into the future that God has for you.
Paul likens himself to an athlete straining, stretching, pushing themselves to the absolute limit in competition. He is holding nothing back in pursuit of the prize
And it’s not a floral wreath, a trophy, or Nike endorsement that he’s straining for- It’s the realized hope of God’s redemption plan in Christ Jesus.
The hope of eternal life, of a new resurrection body, a new heaven, and a new earth, where the believer will be present with Jesus for all eternity.
The beautiful and compelling truth for us today: We are running for the same prize as Paul!
Why do we forget the past? Why do we give Jesus our absolute all? Because we are a people of hope, a people of promise. Paul is inviting his readers to look up! Don’t quit! There’s a prize ahead!
Question for you today: Is that the prize you are living for?As you make decisions about school, work, relationships- is it with an eye on the prize of eternity? Or on the eye of security and pleasure?
When you make decisions about what to do with your money, which prize is in sight?
When you consider a conflict with someone close to you, which prize is in view?
For all the encouragement in this passage, he also issues a warning- a life lived with a worldly mindset, is destined for a different prize.
Philippians 3:18-19
For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.
Paul has set up a clear contrast between those who focus on Christ and those who focus on earthly things.A mind set on earthly things is governed by the pursuit of fleshly desires.
Without an eye on the Lord, we lose sight of righteousness and right living- we take pride and glory in things we should be ashamed of.
And the prize for living with a mind set on earthly things? Destruction. A far cry from the hope filled reality of life in Christ.The importance of this matter to Paul and for his friends becomes clear as he doesn’t fail to warn them about running with a different focus.
How would you say your race going today?
Maybe you are running ok today- eye on the prize, leaning into the life God has called you to. We celebrate that today- Don’t quit! Don’t give up! Don't take your eye off the prize!
Perhaps you started out that way, but a few laps in, you aren’t so sure.
Maybe sin has tripped you up again.
Perhaps you have lost focus of why you are running this race in the first place.
Life has gotten in the way, and you feel alone and left out.
Maybe you imagine everyone else is running a better race than you, like it’s not even worth it-Friend, will you hear the encouragement of our friend Paul today?
Don’t quit! Don’t lose focus! You might be down but it’s not over!
The prize is worth it! Finish the race!

Village to Village began because of several trips to Guatemala. After realizing that we could adopt villages and provide sustainable resources, we felt like it would be the perfect opportunity to build relationships long term and help communities become self sufficient.
On one of our first trips to Guatemala, Heidi's mentor challenged her to pray about beginning her own nonprofit. After months of prayer and talking with possible board members, we began Village to Village in May of 2016.
Other than Guatemala, all of our countries have local connections. People that serve on our board or with us in ministry have connected us to the places where we serve. A few years into ministry, we realized that we needed something local and that is where working with the local refugee community began. We are joined on today’s Christmas day broadcast by Tawnya Landes. Tawnya joins us today to share about her passion for packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. She first learned about Operation Christmas child last year when a child who received a shoebox from somebody, she knows wrote her back and talked about how the shoebox had impacted their life. Last year Tawnya was able to do 50 shoeboxes and this year she was able to do close to 200 shoeboxes. Most of the items in the shoeboxes Tawnya has made by hand. An example of some of the items that she has made for the shoeboxes are dolls and art kits. She also had a friend that was able to make some wooden trucks for the shoeboxes. Evangeline was born in Cebu, Philippines where her family lived near a dump area. She had to skip school and babysit her younger siblings while her mom worked seven days a week, providing food for the family. Evangeline received a shoebox gift when she was 13 years old. There was only one left, and they offered it to her. It’s contents met many needs for Evangeline and her family, toothbrush and toothpaste especially stood out to her, as those were items they couldn’t afford. Dr. Phil was originally born in Alabama. When he was three years old his parents moved to Florida. When Dr. Phil was about six years old his parents accepted a call to missions and they moved to Italy. They live in Florence Italy for two years and then moved to Rome Italy. They lived there till Dr. Phil was 16 then they moved to Canada where Dr. Phil graduated high school. Dr. Phil attended Olivet Nazarene University and then Nazarene theological seminary. Dr. Phil pastored in Ohio and Virginia before becoming the district superintendent of Virginia in 2004. We pray that today’s broadcast will be a half hour of hope for your life.

Judy‘s mom was not able to support her and her three siblings so her and her brother were sent to live at the Salem Baptist children’s home and other two siblings were adopted. She did go back to live with her mom and stepdad for a little bit and then went to live with her dad in Florida for her junior and senior year of high school before moving back to Virginia. Growing up in a family of 9 kids, Vladimir Prokhnevskiy didn’t get many gifts and food was a luxury.
One harsh winter in Kiev, Ukraine, Prokhnevskiy and his siblings rode a bus and then a tram to get to the church where shoeboxes were handed out. The brightly colored gifts stood out immediately! He was so excited about his gift that time seemed to stand still for a brief moment.
Prokhnevskiy’s favorite items were candy and toys, but he remembers “brushing” his teeth with floss to enjoy the minty flavored string and now having a toothbrush of his own! The shoebox represented to Prokhnevskiy unconditional love that heals everything, allowing him and his siblings to forget their struggles for a moment and just feel loved.
Charlie was born and raised in Elkton where he still lives today. He started attending Church of the Nazarene in Harrisonburg about ten years ago with his wife Odessa. Leslie was born in Fulks Run, Virginia and was raised in Broadway, Virginia. Leslie has not lived in the same place more than four years since she turned 18.She has traveled to England multiple times, Mexico multiple time and she also spent six weeks in Colombia. In addition to her travels Leslie lived in New Jersey for a few years before moving back to the Shenandoah Valley. Leslie joins us on Front Porch Talks today to share her testimony.
We will be praying together specifically for five key areas.
FOCUS 1, Pray for one another (I Timothy 2:1): Who is hurting around you? Who is in need of hope and redemption? Who has a physical need? A financial need? A spiritual need? What we’re fighting: Sickness, discouragement, hopelessness.
FOCUS 2, Pray for peace (Philippians 4:7): We are living in an unprecedented time of uncertainty. Many are attacked and some paralyzed by fear and anxiety. Peace does not come from our circumstances, but from our God who is our peace. Where is an area you are needing to experience peace? Where are you currently seeking peace from other sources than In Christ? Where is disruption and the Lord is inviting you to speak prayers of peace? Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. How can you embody His peace during these days? What we’re fighting: Anxiety, worry, timidity.
FOCUS 3, Pray for courage (Joshua 1:9): Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather obedience in spite of fear. The source of our strength and courage is not found in ourselves, but in Christ. Where is God asking you to trust and walk in obedience in spite of your fear? Where is it that you are walking in obedience but not yet seeing God’s answer, His provision, or His next step? What we’re fighting: self-focus, disobedience, doubt.
FOCUS 4, Pray for unity (1 Corinthians 1:10): We don’t seek unity for the sake of unity but unity in Christ (as we make Christ the focus, he can bring unity). Is there anywhere you see disunity in your life? In your family? In your community? What is it today that you are seeking instead of God? In place of God? What we’re fighting: discord, pettiness, negative talk.
FOCUS 5, Pray for our church (Acts 1:8): Pray for us to be faithful in living out of mission: Transformed by God to bring hope to others through Christ. Pray for us to be obedient even in times of uncertainty. Pray for unity in the body as we seek the Lord and trust in Him to lead us. Pray for our leadership and volunteers. What we’re fighting: weakness, irrelevance, ineffectiveness.
Malisa was adopted at 28 days old into a Christian family. They lived in Pennsylvania for two years and Ohio for six years before moving to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where she has lived ever since. Malisa joins us on Front Porch Talks today to share her testimony.
Gabriel Montanez was born in Illinois and when he was about a year old his family moved to the Shenandoah Valley where he has lived ever since. Gabriel joins us on Front Porch Talks today to share his testimony with us. Gabriel also shares about a nine month mission trip that he is leaving for in September through World race. They will be doing training in the states until January when they hope to go overseas to Eswatini, Ethiopia and Cambodia.
