In case you missed it, the March/April 2026 issue of Holiness Today came out earlier this month. This edition is a deep dive into the book of Genesis, exploring the foundational stories of our faith and how they continue to shape our journey of holiness.

In this issue, we walk through the "days" of the patriarchs and the very beginnings of creation with a powerful lineup of scholars and leaders:

  • Frank Moore explores "The Days of Creation," examining the spiritual insights we can gain from our physical senses.
  • Jim Edlin reflects on "The Days of Adam," reminding us that Adam’s story of blessing and brokenness is also our story.
  • Gabriel Benjiman looks at "The Days of Noah," using the ark as a witness to God’s gracious invitation.
  • Timothy Green discusses "The Days of Abraham," focusing on the interwoven threads of call, promise, and covenant.
  • Paige Graves examines "The Days of Isaac," describing him as the essential "middleman" of the divine covenant blessing.
  • David Snodgrass writes on "The Days of Jacob," detailing the transformation from a life of striving to one of total dependence on God.
  • T. Scott Daniels concludes the series with "The Days of Joseph," highlighting how God’s sovereign love turns harm into global redemption.

On this episode, we are featuring the audio from Andy Lauer’s "A Word From..." segment. Andy is the lead pastor of South Bend First Church of the Nazarene, and in this talk he discusses how Jesus Christ is present throughout the entire arc of salvation history—notably from the beginning in Genesis.

Stay tuned as we listen to Pastor Andy’s insights on finding Jesus in the biblical terrain of Genesis.

Eugene Stowe explores why specific prayers often go unanswered and refutes "prosperity" theology. He argues that effective prayer must align with God's sovereign will, which humans cannot fully grasp. By linking Philippians, 1 John, and Romans, Stowe posits that the Holy Spirit acts as both an "Intercessor" and "Interceptor." When believers offer "improper" prayers outside God’s plan, the Spirit intercepts and corrects them, substituting human desires with divine necessities. This process ensures God always supplies a believer’s true needs, allowing them to trust the outcome even when it differs from their original request.

Former evangelism professor Chick Shaver compares the local church to a hospital nursery, where new converts are "spiritual infants" requiring specialized care and warmth. He warns that without this intentional care, many converts perish spiritually within weeks. Shaver illustrates this through Dan and Judy, a couple who faced indifference at two churches before finding a welcoming community. The intentional outreach by laypeople and the pastor ultimately led to the couple’s conversion and to their own ministry to others, demonstrating that a warm congregational climate is vital for spiritual growth.

This sermon declares that God's people possess an unstoppable joy that flourishes even in life’s most barren "deserts". Rooted in Isaiah 35, the message distinguishes true joy from fleeting happiness, describing it as a "living reality" that does not wait for perfect circumstances. Instead, this joy audaciously erupts amidst brokenness, just as a botanical "superbloom" transforms a wilderness with radiant life. This Advent sermon focuses on the theme of peace, illustrated as a "two-sided coin". The first side is "peace with God," established through the birth of Jesus and salvation. The second side is the "peace of God," which requires believers to trust God rather than leaning on their own understanding. The speaker emphasizes that biblical peace is not the absence of conflict, but rather the presence of God amidst life's struggles. We honor the life and ministry of Dr. Jim Diehl (1937-2025), a beloved pastor, district superintendent, and General Superintendent Emeritus of the Church of the Nazarene. Dr. Diehl passed away on November 2, 2025.

Just days before his passing, on October 30, he traveled to Nampa, Idaho, to preach at Bethel Church of the Nazarene for the Holiness Partnership event. This episode features that powerful message.

Dr. Diehl preaches on the Christian life as a journey that goes far beyond a single moment of decision. He outlines three key prayers that define this lifelong walk: "Lord, forgive me" (repentance), "Lord, take me" (consecration), and "Lord, make me" (the ongoing work of sanctification). Using his trademark warmth and personal stories, Dr. Diehl explains how God continually works to "pull the stumps" of things like prejudice, impatience, and fear from our lives, shaping us into more Christ-like individuals.

In this March 1981 address, General Superintendent Orville Jenkins discusses the spiritual requirements for effective preaching for holiness ministers. He states that a minister's life must be one of unreservedly giving oneself to the indwelling Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to fill them with joy and victory so they can preach with power and anointing.

Jenkins uses the Apostle Paul as the ultimate example, noting that Paul's "outward man" was "perishing" from his intense suffering and physical struggles as a "vessel of clay". However, Paul’s "inward man" was being renewed day by day through the "supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ". This daily spiritual renewal, Jenkins concludes, is God's plan for every spirit-filled minister.

Eugene Stowe addresses the critical relationship between church growth and the quality of its membership. He shares an incident where a pastor gently deferred a new convert's request to join immediately, insisting she attend the membership training class first. The core message is that a strong church demands qualified members; pastors must not compromise standards or build with "inferior material" for the sake of numbers. Training should cover church beliefs, ethical standards, and entire sanctification, ensuring new members are truly ready to accept the church's manual position. This recording features General Superintendent George Coulter from the February 1979 edition of the Minister's Tape Club. He begins by expressing his appreciation for the Church of the Nazarene's positive factors, including the generosity of its members, the love expressed toward pastors, a sound organizational structure, and the centrality of its holiness message.

However, Dr. Coulter expresses deep concern over the church's dismally small overall growth rate, which suggests a greater problem with retaining members than with recruiting new ones.

This leads to his primary conviction: the Church of the Nazarene desperately needs a heaven-sent revival. He warns that the church could become barren, powerless, and spiritually bankrupt if it loses its vitality.

Dr. Coulter emphasizes that this needed revival is not a program or a meeting, but an inner, personal quickening and renewal that must first begin with the ministers. He challenges them to exhibit credibility, humility, and Christ's likeness, rise above selfishness, and live by God's prescription: to humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways. He pleads for a return to the joy and vitality the church once experienced.

In this episode, listen to William Greathouse give an informal talk about the importance of preaching. He addresses the challenge many pastors feel, where other pressing responsibilities seem to push the pulpit ministry into the background. Dr. Greathouse firmly argues why this is a serious error and why preaching is the minister's most important task. Nothing else, he says, can compensate for failure in the pulpit.

Dr. Wynkoop was a remarkable voice in the Church of the Nazarene—a writer, pastor, missionary, and theologian whose influence still resonates today. Her most celebrated works are Foundations of Wesleyan-Arminian Theology and A Theology of Love: The Dynamic of Wesleyanism, both of which continue to shape contemporary Wesleyan thought.

Her ministry journey spanned the globe and the academy. She pastored churches in California and Oregon, taught at George Fox Evangelical Seminary, and served as the founding president of Japan Nazarene Theological Seminary. She also taught in Taiwan before returning to the United States to serve as Professor of Theology at Trevecca Nazarene College (1966–1976) and later at Nazarene Theological Seminary (1976–1979).

Throughout her century-long life and ministry, Dr. Wynkoop met Phineas Bresee, studied under H. Orton Wiley and Olive Winchester left a profound impact on generations of students and colleagues across four Nazarene institutions—having studied at Point Loma Nazarene University and Northwest Nazarene University, and having taught at Trevecca Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary.

These recordings, captured initially in 1979, have been substantially restored. While Dr. Wynkoop’s voice has been clarified, student questions during Q&A segments may be difficult to discern. Her responses, however, remain clear and impactful.

RT Williams (1883-1946) was a minister and general superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene. Born in Texas, he became a minister in 1908 and later served as president of Texas Holiness University. He was the youngest person to be elected general superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene at age 33 and served in that role from 1916 until his death in 1946.

"An appreication by BF Haynes

Dr. Williams has done the disciples of our Lord a distinct service in giving in printed form this dissertation on "Temptation." He enters the arena of the daily struggles of the believer and helps him along the most practical and needy lines of his life. Strange indeed that Temptation should ever have become a neglected theme, but it is true, as the author suggests. We admire the clear and logical and discriminating way in which the subject is treated in these pages."

They also provided oversight for the East Ohio District of the Church of the Nazarene as co-District Superintendents.

With a background that also includes time as a registered nurse and as a published author, Dr. Sunberg brings a rich and multifaceted perspective to her ministry and leadership. We're so grateful for her time and excited to learn from her experiences.

In this conversation, we discuss her journey of faith and her recent book, The Christian Life.

Lecture five of a series on the 'Doctrine of Atonement', delivered by Dr. Mildred Bangs Wynkoop during the fall of 1979 at Nazarene Theological Seminary.

Orton Wiley and Olive Winchester, and left a profound impact on generations of students and colleagues across four Nazarene institutions—having studied at Point Loma Nazarene University and Northwest Nazarene University, and having taught at Trevecca Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary.

These recordings, captured initially in 1979, have been substantially restored. While Dr. Wynkoop’s voice has been clarified, student questions during Q&A segments may be difficult to discern. Her responses, however, remain clear and impactful.

In this episode, we present a special audio adaptation of a theological classic: “The Meaning of Christian Security”, written in 1939 by David Shelby Corlett. A respected theologian, editor, and educator in the Church of the Nazarene, Dr. Corlett was known for his clarity, depth, and passionate commitment to scriptural holiness and sanctification.

This work is a rich and thoughtful exploration of what it truly means to be secure in Christ—not as a passive guarantee, but as a dynamic, ongoing relationship rooted in faith, obedience, and divine grace. Drawing deeply from Scripture and the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition, Corlett offers a vision of salvation that is both hopeful and profoundly responsible.

The essay is organized into five chapters, each unpacking a vital dimension of Christian security:

  1. Security: A Divine Provision
  2. What Is Eternal Life?
  3. Security: A Vital Relationship
  4. Security Through Co-operation
  5. Its Scope

Whether you're a pastor, a student of theology, or simply someone longing to walk more closely with Christ, this timeless message offers clarity, encouragement, and challenge.

"The opening day of the Tenth General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene, June 16, 1940, was a memorable one in the annals of the church. The blessing of God was unmistakably present from the opening song until the closing benediction. The morning communion service with Doctor Goodwin's message lifted us to heights of spiritual fellowship with God and with one another. Doctor Williams' characteristically stirring message in the afternoon was a challenge to better things for the days to come. The evening sermon was delivered by Dr. J. B. Chapman. His subject was "Christ and the Bible." It was an eloquent, scholarly and inspiring message that seemed to electrify the congregation of almost 6,000 listeners that crowded the great auditorium. Requests and pleas for the publication of the sermon were made both to the speaker and to the Publishing House executives. Therefore the message is now available, for the benefit of many who heard it and wish to read it as well as hear it, also for the many thousands who were not privileged to attend the service but who through reading this address will be led to a deeper love for the Bible and the Christ of the Bible."

On this episode listen to an audio production of John Wesley’s sermon from Matthew 7:15-20. This sermon was accessed from the Wesley Center Online and was edited by Kristen Chamberlain with corrections by Ryan Danker and George Lyons for the Wesley Center for Applied Theology. The Wesley Center Online website is a collection of historical and scholarly resources about the Wesleyan Tradition, theology, Christianity, and the Nazarene church hosted by the Wesley Center for Applied Theology at Northwest Nazarene University. We are thankful for the work of Richard Thompson in overseeing this repository.

In this message, “Upon Our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount: Discourse Twelve,” we encounter a powerful message and warning to Christians for every generation. Wesley unpacks Jesus’ warning in Matthew 7:15-20: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits."

Wesley challenges us to discern truth from deception, cautioning against leaders who appear righteous yet lead others astray with teachings that veer from Christ’s narrow path of humility, love, and holiness. He calls for careful examination of the fruits of their lives and doctrines, urging listeners to hold fast to the true way of salvation and bring all teachings to the test of Scripture.

On this episode listen to an audio production of One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, read by Jordan Eigsti.

This instruction follows the four patterns of classical faith formation.

The Apostles Creed

The Sacraments

The Ten Commandments

The Lord’s Prayer

These teachings espouse the essential doctrines that Nazarenes confess and practice as part of a global community of Christians in many denominational expressions worldwide using a traditional, centuries-old template for instruction in the faith of the Christian church.

As our denomination expands globally, it is appropriate to identify not only our distinctives, but how our theology derives from Holy Scripture, and harmonizes with the church’s tradition over two millennia, with human reason enlightened by the Holy Spirit, and with Christian experience. One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism: Essential Teaching for Faith Formation in the Church of the Nazarene, is just such an initiative.

Throughout April, Nazarenes will be blessing their communities through various acts of service in the states of Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Nate Gilmore from Holiness Today had the opportunity to discuss this service project with the North Central Ohio District Superintendent, Wendell Brown.

T. A. Noble considers the role given to Scripture in the New Testament church, in the patristic era, at the Reformation, during the Enlightenment, and in the nineteenth century. That will bring us to consider the Reformation/Evangelical view today, including the questions raised by historians, scientists, and by hermeneutics. The Wesleyan position will then be explored more specifically, including what has been called ‘the Wesleyan Quadrilateral’ and how that should be properly understood.

00:36 A Wesleyan Understanding of the Authority of Scripture Part 2

22:41 If Jesus is the self revelation of God, is it problematic to say that the Bible is the self revelation of God so that scripture becomes a quasi-fourth person of the Trinity?

24:28 If the Nazarene view can be thought of as Soteriological inerrancy, does that not lead to picking and choosing what passages are really connected to salvation issues; thus picking what passages are authoritative for us, and what passages we can dismiss?

27:21 When we interpret scripture, how do we know when our interpretation is going off base? How do we test our interpretation?

40:51 What are the other alternatives to the historical critical approach? How many other approaches are there?

43:32 In interpreting scripture, what part does personal experience play?

47:26 Can you highlight some things that we've adopted in our social consciousness in the church that is influenced more by Reformed theology than Wesleyan or our Nazarene roots?

50:31 Resources you might recommend for adult classroom settings and discipling people related to the authority of scripture?

51:35 Do you have any writing, projects, or work that might address these types of things?

53:11 Discipleship Place: How to Study the Bible

54:27 Do you use science to interpret scripture? What does that look like?

00:36 Introduction of T. A. Noble

01:53 A Wesleyan understanding of the authority of the Bible

27:42 Thinking about Christological hymns that we have in the New Testament, and the example being 1 Corinthians 3:16; how widely and how early were they used in the word of preaching, or were they sung as an affirmation of the Gospel in those first 20 years?

29:31 Would it be more proper to end our prayers in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit?

51:23 You've sketched the Bible's authority in its relation to the Gospel. How does the modern view of inerrancy in scripture as God's self-revelation disconnect from the historical view?

53:10 What is to be understood by "necessary for faith" when talking about plenary inspiration of scripture?

56:03 Can you speak about whether the Apocrypha should or should not be treated as authoritative? And also speak about the same question regarding the Gnostic Gospels that are gaining a hearing today.

01:00:07 Am I understanding your starting point that the authority of the Bible is based in the authority of the Gospel as transmitted to the apostles? What implications does that have on the idea of Apostolic Succession?

01:02:39 How can the church, especially the local church, help to rebuild these theologies (natural theology, liberal theology) upon a biblical foundation?

01:06:40 Why is the Apocrypha not in our canon of scripture, and why are they not to be used to determine doctrine?
