This Hive Howls: Recent Episodes

Julie B

As a young mom of 2 wading her way through the picture-perfectly-curated-lives of moms on the internet, Julie is tired of feeling lost and alone as she struggles with her mental-health while being a new parent. Hi, I'm Julie, mom, teacher, interior designer, and author of the blog This Hive. This podcast - This Hive Howls - is paying homage to the moms, dads, and parents of the world who feel like they don't have a voice or a space to complain about the daily hardships of parenthood! So HOWL along with me, as I share my experiences as a parent who is growing and breaking generational curses, as well as re-parenting myself through therapy so I can be the best mom I can for my kids!

This past week I've been dealing with the onslaught of emotions that come with sending your little kids to daycare! Today I talk about how that transition is going, what I'm most worried about and what I'm most looking forward to in this new season. I also officially announce that I am pregnant! If you're feeling worried and stressed about this "back to school" season, this episode is for you!

In today's episode I talk about my distain for corporal punishment and how I go about using gentle/conscious parenting to raise my kids. I focus on a video that I saw which makes a joke out of abusing your kids for discipline and how this is harmful to the conscious parenting movement. Not to mention that these videos are seen as normal to thousands of parents who think monetizing your kids is safe and a "good thing."

Welcome every one, new and returning! In today's episode I ruminate on my worries around the kind of village my children need in terms of meaningful friendships. Sparked by a conversation I had with a friend about playgroups, I realized that my soon to be school age son has no "real" friends yet, and that got me worried. What if he doesn't make friends in time? Why can't I work harder to create a village for myself filled with kids his age so he has more opportunities to make friends? Will he feel lonely forever?
All of these questions are valid. If you're feeling stressed with the upcoming school year, and you haven't heard conversations around a kids' village, I hope you find some connection here.

Hey mommas (and parents all shapes a sizes!) I am working on a bit of a brand re-design so stay tuned for that as we reach 30 EPISODES!!
This week I have been reflecting on all the way I am feeling so so tired, from mental exhaustion, to physically not being able to stay awake in the middle of the day to carrying the mental load of being the CEO of this house. Everything is taking it's tole, with the larger sleep deprivation hanging it's ugly head over it all! I'm sharing some pretty vulnerable things but I know it's important to talk about them, so thank you for joining me as I complain about how being a parent is just TIRING!!

A traumatic birth story with even more heartbreak to follow is the story I'm telling in this episode. I consider myself part of the NICU club now and I've learned a lot about resilience and grief that I hope I am ready for my next baby (when we try again!) For those of you who have lived this experience, I am so sorry. We are not alone, it's such a growing experience but never one I would want someone to go through. Our time spent in the NICU is not talked about enough, so join me as I tell my tale so that we break the silence on this taboo topic!

In today's episode I talk about how mothers and parents are pigeon holed into these groups and categories which dictate how we should live our lives. It can be really hard to break out of those molds to find true flexibility in our lives, but it is necessary so that we can be at peace with the one life we have to live.
Being a parent is hard enough without the expectations society (and as a result we) put on ourselves, so it's time to break out of those outdated ways of living and find balance in this community of support.

I'm currently reading Glennon Doyle's "Untamed" which is a huge eye opener!

Being a new mom can be extremely lonely, and I don't consider myself a "new mom" anymore, and I still feel immense loneliness and isolation on a daily basis. Even with the explosion of social media during COVID lockdown there is still something inherently lonely about raising little kids. There is a stigma that we should be able to do it all, but it also takes a village however we are stuck doing it alone because villages don't exists as they used to. This episode is dedicated to all parents out there feeling complete isolation, and like they are the only ones suffering. You are NOT alone, it can be so hard to reach out, but there are people there for you! Join me today for a little while so that we may feel less lonely in the future.

As I jump back into recording this week, I'm talking about why I've been away for such a long time, and why my mental health has taken a beating. It is so important to talk about how we struggle, even if that is with one trusted friend. The silence of mental health is what makes it fatal and so this week I am sharing my regression in the hopes that someone out there feels safe enough to break their silence.
So many things have happened in my life in the past month that have been pretty traumatic, and so my body was begging me for a time of rest; now I am in my time of recovery.

This week I talk about the importance of taking back control over parts of you life you might have lost while living in the trenches of motherhood. For me it was having control over my birthday and allowing myself to live in that special moment without guilt!
I also talk about what "The Growth Decade" is and how we can choose to envision our lives in decades so that we don't obsess over a mid-life crises. We are just getting started in this life and although birthdays can be daunting, I'm choosing to reclaim them as a time for celebration!
Also I'm joined my a very special (little) guest!

In today's episode I explore the term "homemaker" and how it affected the way I see my role as a mom. I have been living with this concept for about a year now and I've become fond of how it gave me clarity about my role within the home and outside of the home. Join me as I talk about how it's helped me combat my anxiety about my identity and how I hope to use it during this season of life.

From societal pressures to bounce back to the millennial paradox that was growing up when "skinny chic" was trendy, being a mom and having an actual positive outlook on your body feels impossible. I struggled with my weight and body image my whole life, so now that I'm a mom, I'm trying to focus on how strong my body is rather than what the world (and my inner voice) thinks I should look like to be accepted and worthy of love!

In this episode I talk about my personal journey to re-parenting the little parts of me that needed better support when I was growing up. We are a sum of our parts, and I never felt like I was worthy of love. Now those parts that went un-loved get triggered when I'm parenting my children. The thing is, I've come a long way already to healing the wounds left by generational curses but I know the journey isn't over yet!

If you're feeling alone in your healing journey, reach out over on Instagram or FAcebook, I'm always here to listen.

They say the first 3 years are the hardest on a relationship once kids enter the scene, I can attest to that! So many things are happening to both partners during an intense time that it can be really hard to find the connection you once had before kids. These changes don't have to be permanent, as long as you're willing to communicate your needs and do the small things to show you still love each other.

Who am I? This week I get anxious and emotional talking about where we find our identities, how we define ourselves and how that affects our mental health. As a pre-cursor to a future episode where I'll talk about identity in motherhood and how many moms lose themselves to becoming moms.
There are so many ways we can identify, and many more ways that others perceive us it can be hard to figure out where we fit in. The unknown can be the hardest part, especially for me as my adoption really compounded the fears I have about my identity.

This week I'm working on not feeling so guilty for the choices I make regarding my family and the holidays! I'm also complaining about the expectation to be a super mom, especially around the holidays, the guilt we feel when we can't reach those expectations, and how to make the most of this time with our families.
Don't feel ashamed if you can't (and won't) do it all, we aren't supposed to, no matter what anyone tells you!

My son had an outburst and it was a direct reflection of me. As moms we can hold onto a lot of frustration and resentment before we blow, but when we do pop a gasket, it isn't pretty! In this weeks episode I talk about what went down with my toddler, how I am taking it as a learning experience, and why mom rage - and showing emotions in general - is so important for our developing kids.
I also rant a bit about Christmas and wonder how I'm going to manage the holidays this year, especially when I'm feeling kind of blue.

As my son turned 3 I noticed a big shift in his development, specifically his behaviour towards me. These toddler years are testing all aspects of my mental health, confidence, and decisions on parenting but it is so rewarding.
In today's episode I talk about how these changes are affecting my parenting, how I'm being kind to myself through these years and where I hope this journey will ultimately be beneficial for my kids. I also cover how social media comparison makes parenting harder, since we have access to short clips of so called perfect parenting.

As a stay at home mom I feel the weight every day of my importance on my family. I also feel the scrutiny and lack of acknowledgement for my service from the greater public, especially online. Stay at home parents are so undervalued by society and although we are fighting to prove that we are essential and our time is valuable, we have a long way to go!

In this episode I talk about all the reasons why SAHMs are unappreciated, join me in the fight to make our voices heard.

I am!
Today I'm howling about why it's so hard to raise kids when the village doesn't exist as it used to, why it is something that is no longer available, and really why it benefits everyone to have a community who supports all children.

In this episode I talk about the 3 things I've been hearing more since bringing home my second child. These are common phrases we hear as parents that are said with good intentions but usually have a darker, more guilt trippy meaning behind them.

Changing the rhetoric around parenting is a goal of mine, and that starts with taking accountability for having said these things myself, and going forward with the conversation with change in mind.

In this episode I talk about the different periods of anxiety women face through their motherhood journeys. Post partum anxiety is not a topic that is talked about enough, but it also doesn't just affect us after the baby is born, it can start at conception!
I give you some helpful tips on what to do if you are experiencing anxiety to a detrimental degree, and share with you my struggle with generalized anxiety and how that affected both of my pregnancies.
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, if you are suffering through this time, please reach out to someone. I know I kept my story silent for a long time out of fear. You do not deserve to suffer in silence.

In this weeks episode I talk about what the "baby blues" can look and feel like and how to reach out for help if you are feeling like something is missing after bringing your baby home. I give you a few tips from personal experience about how to know what you're feeling, and validate that they are just as important to acknowledge as post partum depression.
Our mental health is crucial after we come home from the hospital, so please contact a professional or medical provider if you are having larger symptoms of post partum depression or anxiety.

In this weeks episode I'm talking about my awful experience with the breast is best culture and how it made my births for my two children even more traumatic than they were. It is a triggering topic for many, so there's some content warning concerning traumatic births; if you're dealing with any post partum depression, please reach out to a professional.
I hope to see more resources around breast is best vs fed is best. My stance is that a fed baby is the best option, with the approval of doctors of course.
