In this episode we delve into the world of startup investments with angel investor Phil McSweeney. Phil brings his wealth of experience to the table, discussing current trends in the startup ecosystem and highlighting sectors poised for growth. This episode is a must-listen for founders at any stage of their entrepreneurial journey, especially those in the midst of fundraising.
Phil emphasises a critical challenge facing many founders: the necessity of market demand for their products. He notes that a significant reason startups falter is due to building solutions without a sufficient market. He poses a thought-provoking question to the listeners: "Does the world need another dating app?" This serves as a reminder to founders to critically assess the market need for their innovations.
With a background in health, Phil shares his fascination with the health sector, including Med Tech, Pharma, Life Sciences, and Mental Health. His growing interest in AI's potential across various domains is also a highlight of the discussion. However, he's cautious about certain trends, avoiding areas he perceives as fleeting or unproven.
The conversation also touches upon the role of angel investors in startups beyond financial support. Phil discusses the possibility of becoming an advisor to startups, particularly in Ed Tech, and the importance of being negotiable in terms of involvement.
Closing the episode, Phil provides insights into sectors where startups are likely to succeed in the future. He foresees a growing need for businesses to focus on the well-being of their staff, pointing to a trend that extends beyond the health sector.
This episode is a treasure trove of insights for startup founders and entrepreneurs. Phil's advice and predictions offer a valuable perspective on where the startup world is heading and what founders can do to align their ventures for success. Tune in to 'Let's Talk Startups' for this discussion with Phil McSweeney.

Episode 42 has arrived!
Today, weāre being enlightened on what itās like to be a quintessentially British startup by husband and wife duo, Steve and Jenny Hughes. They are co-founders of ARCFORM where theyāre the makers of beautiful, bespoke British lighting.
We talk about everything:
Steve and Jenny are proud to be supporting trade in the UK but theyāve found it challenging with how little support there is from the Government - and that needs to change. We hope Rishi Sunak and Kemi Badenoch are listening in by clicking the link below.
āIf you want to make something that doesnāt fall under the innovation brand, the availability of any government support is next to nothing.ā
This week, with co-founders of ARCFORM, Steve and Jenny Hughes, we are discussing why there isnāt more being done by the UK Government to support and encourage UK-based manufacturing companies.
Steve and Jenny are proudly British and ensure that every step of their bespoke lighting startup, from design to manufacturing, is UK-based and supports trade. We shine a light on this labour of love and find out about their long-term scaling goals, how they qualify which interior designers are a good fit to work with, their experience at trade shows, and how they started ARCFORM with just £400.
Most importantly, we discuss the challenges theyāve faced trying to find premises for ARCFORM and how to keep it all UK grown. With no support from the Government, as focus is placed on supporting other industries, we ask what theyād like to say to Rishi Sunak and Kemi Badenoch.
This is an inspiring episode and youāll come out the other side with the fire to do more to support manufacturing in the UK.

Homebound is shaking up the way homeowners buy furniture by offering a simple and sustainable rental model. Is this first-mover model a good thing or a bad thing? We ask Bradley how being an early disruptor can impact sales, marketing, and hiring, and we discuss their roadmap for success.
Thereās nothing like Homebound in the UK, although there are successful models in the US. Bradley is keeping his fingers crossed that they will benefit from an early mover advantage.
We delve a bit deeper to talk about the early mover advantage and if it really is a good thing. Bradley also shared his thoughts on creating a revenue share model, which allows Homebound to scale effectively without having to worry about a huge bank account and lots of inventory.
From an investment perspective, one of the questions is always, āwhat does the competition look like?ā so we asked Bradley how he has navigated those early investment questions and what helped them secure the investment.
Renting furniture in the UK is tricky because you need to have FCA approval, Bradley shares his insight on whatās involved. He also discusses Marketing and shares the fact that they are going to have to rely very heavily on the social side and that they have put together a strategy which they are working through. We know how hard it is for a founder to get to the tipping point, but Bradleyās insight will certainly get you thinking.
For any of the founders that listen in, Bradley has been open about reaching out to him on LinkedIn or email. Startup life is definitely a journey and sometimes these little words, hopefully wisdom, can definitely help any startup founder out there.

Their journey, from the initial seed of an idea, the lightbulb moment of interlude, to forming their world-changing startup, is one not to be missed.
A shock allergic reaction as a teenager coupled with the pandemic, forced our founders to realise how vital breaks are and how workplace culture in the UK is resistant to them. Theyāre setting out to change the āalways-onā mentality for the better (with the science to back it up!).
Caitlin and Will are the ideal partners to take on this challenge. So, letās talk startups and see if this shakes up the way you workā¦

Startups come in all shapes and sizes, and this week weāre bringing you something completely different! Weāve got Derek Sleater, founder of Sunday Care Therapy, telling us all about how his startup is changing the failing care industry, one empowered patient at a time. From tackling challenges to redefining reputations, to breaking into broken systems, it's not been a walk in the park. We want to find out which bits have been rocky, and how Derek has navigated the tricky terrain of startup land!
Sunday Care Therapy is a residential care agency striving to change the way the UK does care, by creating a fulfilling workplace for carers and prioritising consistency. Theyāre still in the MVP stage, but they have had impressive traction and ā most importantly of all ā they have a clear vision: to turn care into careers. 17 staff members are already making it happen, so what lies ahead, and why does it matter?
Nargis and Demos are digging to find out exactly this, starting with working out what makes Sunday Care Therapy different, and how they market their business in an oversaturated and underfunded industry. We want to know how the company developed its face, and why they opted to make it Derekās!
Here at blazon, we believe that growth is the most important word in a founderās vocabulary. It fuels all of our decisions, and is the constant goal of any company. Naturally then, weāre nosy about what growth looks like at Sunday Care Therapy! The adult social care market is worth Ā£26 billion (yes, really!), making it a place of huge potential, but how can a business break through, when the system is broken?
Derek predicts that the organic growth of Sunday Care Therapy would require 15 years of hard work before their dreams became reality, so how is he going to supercharge that? Will it be through securing angel investment, or by taking a buy-and-build approach for speedy scale-ups? Every option has pros and cons, and we want to know what they are!
Money is important, but itās not the only thing that matters, especially in this industry: care needs to keep kindness at its heart. Derek doesnāt shy away from the sometimes heart-wrenching truths of care, from its current failings, to personal experiences and challenges, to the mental health of the carers.
1 in 3 of us will develop dementia, and 50% of us know someone with it now. Itās scary, but itās exactly the reason that Sunday Care Therapy matters. We will be finding out how he balances his morals with money, and how his idea was born.
If youāre a fan of our podcast, you will already know that we canāt let our guests off too easi

This weekās episode is choc-full of tech-talk and founder-thoughts with Manuel Oliveira, robot-expert and founder of KIT-AR. In all the chaos of startup land, weāre talking about how landing the next big thing can become the catalyst for your businessā take-off. You need your big idea, but then you also need the money, skills and team to make it happen.
KIT-AR is dedicated to bringing augmented reality into manufacturing workplaces as the solution to problems on the production line. They are committed to reducing the manufacturerās cost of poor quality by equipping more workers with the skills they need then and there through technology that directs and instructs. The world of technology never slows, and Manuel is at the helm.
Nargis Jafferali and Demos Demetriou, ever the curious duo, will be finding out all about solution-focused business models that come with a push from the user end, and how that translates into getting investment, choosing a team, and ultimately, making sales. Of course, they will ask the important questions too, including āwill robots take over the world?ā. Youāll want to know the answer!
Manuel is an expert on identifying the pain-points of employees and managers alike, and heās a pro at finding the solutions that fix these. He will be explaining how this approach results in a ready-made market, looking to buy your product, and how this can provide traction from the beginning. Identifying and engaging the target market can often be a sticking point for startups, so we want to know exactly how KIT-AR did it, and how we can replicate their success!
Weāre also unpacking how getting your foot in the door at a company can result in more sales, including cross-selling and upselling. Just like KIT-AR streamlines manufacturing solution through augmented reality, startups need to streamline their sales tactics. So, how do you get noticed by a company? Well, in short, you identify their problem, and solve it.
From raising serious funds, to finding the right team to spend it on, KIT-AR has jumped many hurdles. We wonāt be trying to trip Manuel up, but weāll be doing some thorough digging to find out how technology is changing the workplace, and how this is creating startup-shaped gaps in the markets.
Weāll also picking Manuelās tech-mind to find out how worried we need to be about a robot revolution, and whether he would risk a robot butler of his own! It turns out that he might not, but not for the reason you would expectā¦
Landing the next big thing is exciting, but itās also a tricky process. You want the right people at the helm, and choosing poorly could take you in the wrong direction. Keep your eyes on the destination, buckle yourself in, and get ready for a ride to remember. Letās talk startups!

Hungry for some startup insights? Cook My Grub founder, Shabbir Mookhtiar is brimming with industry knowledge. From planning to pivoting, to going nationwide, Shabbir has done it all, and heās here to give us a whirlwind tour on making tough decisions and why you might want to redirect your business, even when you're already on track.
Cook My Grub is the online marketplace for home chefs, connecting talented cooks with hungry customers nationwide. But it didnāt start there. The company has grown from a series of local networks delivering hot food on the day, and Shabbir is here to tell us why they abandoned plan A, even when it was working. They had funding, they had customers, and they still pivoted. Why?
Well, thatās what Nargis and Demos are finding out! Those brain-picking tools will be back in hand, and they will be asking about everything from scalability to the nitty-gritty pragmatics. How does a successful local company move into a national model, and what are the sacrifices that come with that? How many changes when your business makes a drastic shift in gear? So many questions and only one episode to ask them all in!
Shabbir will also be shedding light on the factors which took Cook My Grub by surprise. These include demographics, local demand, geographical distance, and dodgy deliveries. The road is never easy in startup land! The question we want to know the answer to is, how do you face these problems? And is there anything Shabbir would do differently? Brick walls are inevitable; itās how you get around them that matters.
Weāll also be finding out about how Cook My Grub is prepared and practiced. There is always hard graft going on behind the scenes, so letās turn the spotlight on it, and hear how the concept became reality. Weāre talking trials and testing, consumer feedback and reviewing processes ā ideas are great, but alone, they arenāt enough. Practical application is hard work, and Shabbirās mistakes could be your lessons.
We also love that Cook My Grub is not only passionate about food (who isnāt?) but about sustainability! They believe in keeping their environmental impact low and maintaining a transparent relationship with their customers. This includes informing them of the potential risks of damage during delivery and providing a realistic estimate of arrival. Itās one of the wonderful things we see time and again in startup land, and customers love it: integrity. So, how can you keep your startup values at the core of your growing business?
If youāve listened to some of our previous episodes, youāll already know that we love to keep our guests on their toes, and Shabbir is no exception! Get your thinking hats on, because weāve got a quiz on the businesses you didnāt know had their own pivots.
So, grab your pen and paper, and get comfortable. Letās talk startups!

Hold onto your seats, because in this episode weāre talking to Isaac Twidale, paid-advertising-extraordinaire and pro at all things adverts. Heās here to dispel the myths and give us a crash course on how to make our money matter. From revealing the big secrets advertisers donāt want you to know, to the most common pitfalls, heās here to shake up all you thought you knew about advertising.
In building his own brand, We Do Ads, Isaac has experienced first-hand all of the frustrations and confusion of advertising on a budget. Fortunately, these are hurdles he knows how to overcome. Itās hard graft, and the world of advertising can be a cruel mistress, but consistency is key, as is understanding your process and aims.
Nargis and Demos will be kicking the conversation off by quizzing our expert guest on when to use paid advertisements, and how to do it well. Every marketplace is different, so how do you capture demand, and how is this different to meeting a latent demand competitively? What happens when the marketplace is saturated, and how do you know whether your advertising is making conversions? What does success even look like?!
Thankfully, Isaac has a handle on analysing and utilising data in your advertising tactics. There are many platforms out there, but spreading yourself too thinly might mean that you donāt make a splash anywhere. Itās better to make a tidal wave on one platform, than to be a drop in the ocean on several.
Isaac will also be shedding light on the dingy topic of website traffic. He's debunking the ābigger is betterā myth, because higher numbers does not equal higher quality. Better to have one returning customer visiting your website, than one hundred with no interest in purchasing your product. But can you trust your click statistics?
Well, weāll be finding out about that too, as well as the best way to track this data, and translate it into applicable actions. Weāre talking building monetizable relationships with customers, through a good business, a good website, and a good understanding of who your target market is.
In fact, we think we might even test our unwitting guest with a particularly challenging target market: the emperor penguins. There arenāt many people who could convince this particular crowd to relocate to Kenya, but if anyone can, itās Isaac. If you want to know how heāll be using TikTok, Kemperor Jenner, webinars and a penguin mentoring scheme to make the move happen, tune in and letās talk startups (and penguins!).
Using paid advertising can feel daunting, especially when youāre worried about getting a good return on your budget. With Isaacās advice, you can put your worries to the side, and get one step closer to connecting with your customers-to-be.
Are you ready to boost your business by making paid advertising work for you? Then grab a notepad and pen, and letās talk startups!

In todayās conversation, weāre talking to Guillaume Elkrief, founder of MosaiQ Labs, a company thinking outside of the box, and refusing to fit in one either. Developing AI productivity tools, Guillaumeās company is on the cusp of exciting developments in technology but demonstrating a clear identity in startup world has been tough. So, we're putting him in the hot seat to share his process of making a new box all of your own!
Weāre discussing the pitfalls of trying to do too much, as well as the need for painful honesty when itās time to strip back. Investors need to understand exactly what they are investing in, and customers need to see the USP. You can have all the passion in the world, but if your mission isnāt clear, your product wonāt sell!
As a founder, Guillaume certainly has passion, vision and drive, but often a new business needs to start small and grow gradually. Frustratingly, that can sometimes mean that overflowing ideas can only trickle through slowly. How do you prioritise parts of a project that you have poured yourself into? Well, letās ask someone who has done it!
Pitching to investors was hard work, but from the challenging process was born a company with a clear mission: to use AI to easily organise and analyse information. Guillaume was faced with many ānoās before he found some āyesāes, so Nargis and Demos will be doing some thorough quizzing to find out how his approach changed.
We all know that thinking outside of the box is great, but too many ideas at once will sink a business before it has chance to find its feet. There is a discrepancy between the wants of the consumer and the investor: you sell a product to the consumer, but a business to the investor. Itās a different pitch. Guillaume learned this the hard way, but heās sharing his lessons with us, so that you don't have to.
Weāll also be thinking about the changing and evolving nature of teams. Not everyone is the right fit, so how do you decide who is, and what do you do when youāve hired the wrong person? Is it helpful for employees to have startup experience, or do you want someone from a corporate background? It can feel like a minefield, so we better pick some brains!
If all these insights aren't enough to quench your startup hunger, don't worry. We like to keep our guests on their toes! So, seeing as Guillaume is an out-of-the-box thinker, with an out-of-the-box business, we figured it would only be right to test his knowledge of boxes. Yes, you read that right! But if you want to know more, you'll just have to join us...
For MosaiQ Labs, finding an interested audience was the easy bit, but establishing an identity that resonated with investors and consumers alike was the challenge. Startups make for steep learning curves, but difficult journeys often have the most incredible destinations at the end. Are you ready to talk startups?

Our guest this week is George Wade, founder of Zevero, the company helping other businesses to reduce their emissions. Founded in lockdown, they have already survived some rocky periods, and we want to hear all Georgeās insights on how to build something that not only survives, but thrives.
George is telling us about the good, the bad, and the honest, sharing reflections on the companyās proud progress, as well as unpacking the challenge of uncertainty that shrouds startup land. However passionate founders may be, two bad months can put a business in a very different position. Staying grounded is no easy task, especially when you need to keep positive for your team. So how does George keep all the plates spinning?
A startup is fuelled by founder passion, and it often feels like that is the only thing moving it along. Itās a big pressure, but weāre hearing how George is driven by conviction. He and his cofounder, Benjamin Richardson, work to bring about meaningful emission reductions, and their business has a direct impact on our planet. At Zevero, itās not just about ticking boxes for stockists, its about instigating meaningful change. Their business is one piece of the climate change puzzle that weāre all scrambling to solve. Itās a growing market, because itās one that really matters.
It can be tempting to follow the money, but George will be explaining why they are interested in the long-term. Ultimately, conviction, passion and a genuine drive for change are stabler foundations than short-term profit.
Nargis and Demos are also doing some digging into the bigger picture of Georgeās journey as a founder. How do you measure your achievements? Is it by seeing products you worked with on the shelves, or through a mention in a publication, or is it making your mum proud? It might sounds silly, but if youāve ever faced an unimpressed parent, youāll know itās an important question!
You can call us naĆÆve, but weāll also be talking about the potential positives of inexperience when starting a startup. You donāt have to know everything, and sometimes a willingness to take risks is big asset to an early business. When youāre setting up in your bedroom in the midst of a global pandemic like George did, you might find that a pinch of rashness goes a long way.
Climate change is a topic on everybodyās lips, but with the help of George, weāre working out what really needs to change. In fact, we think we might even make him king for a little bit, just to kick start some of these important, planet-saving ideas he has. Sorry Charles!
George knows the benefits of electricity over gas, and renewable energy over fossil fuels, and he know what needs to change. For today, heās settling for electrifying our startup conversation with some gritty, founder energy. Are you ready to talk startups?

This week, weāre talking investments. Weāve got Rob Tominey, founder of Further, talking about venture capital funds, and the whos, whats and hows of investing. Itās an episode chock-full of industry insights on everything from crowdfunding to coping in the current climate. At the heart of our conversation are Robās magic words: āInvesting in startups mattersā. We certainly agree!
New to the market, Further is the platform providing access to startup investment funds for as little as Ā£1000. Investment is competitive, so Nargis and Demos will be quizzing Rob to work out how āFurtherā came about and what the future of the business looks like. In any startup, it's tough to get noticed, so finding a niche is crucial, but not always straight forward. Rob thinks Further has found theirs, and we're itching to understand the magic that makes it happen!
Weāll be hearing how the platform connects retail investors with venture capital funds, providing them at the lowest rate on the market. According to Rob, the company's USP is simple: itās a solution for the everyday folk. If you're interested in investing in startups and have Ā£1000, then this is the solution for you. It's simple and it's working. However, the UK economy is weak, and startup land is already pretty rocky: how is Further weathering the climate, especially during a cost-of-living crisis? And how can other businesses cope?
Whatever the company is doing is working, with nearly 1000 investors coming through the platform since its public launch a few months ago. Itās exceeded expectations but, where some might worry about the market in the current UK economy, Rob has confidence in the companyās timing. We want to pick those brains to find out why!
With an expert mind to interrogate, weāll also be finding out about the investing market more widely, talking about the different available funds, as well as unpacking all the details of crowdfunding, both from the perspective of investors, and startups. Rob thinks the UK needs this. We LOVE that he sees startups as an engine of the UK economy, and, here at @blazon, weāre always ready to take it up a gear!
As weāre getting to grips with the gritty detail of investing, weāll also be picking Robās brains to find out what he thinks needs to change. The world of business isn't perfect, so how do we make it better? There is always a lot to learn in startup world ā itās one of the things that makes it so exciting. When several startup brains get thinking, there can be incredible chemistry. Weāre ready to put our heads together!
Startups and investments can feel overwhelming, so letās hear from someone with all the inside knowledge. In Robās own words⦠āthere arenāt many bright sparks at the moment, but startups are one of themā⦠So, are you ready to talk startups?

Itās the first episode of season three, and itās shaping up to be blazon-ly brilliant. Weāve got top-notch tips, educational analogies and the thoughtful musings of our startup-founding guests! Weāre bringing you lessons and insights from every sector, with detailed conversations about how our guests have got where they are. Turn your brain on⦠youāre going to want to pay attention!
This week, weāve got Marino Ramirez, founder of Eva Latam, the insurance startup providing affordable and convenient insurance in Latin America and breaking the legacy cycle. Itās important work, but heās also made it profitable, something that is never straightforward! Building something that makes both money and a difference isnāt easy, and we want to know how heās done it.
With a background in insurance, Marino brought his corporate brain to his startup and when paired with his passion for his work, itās proving to be a winning combination. Heās seen both sides of the coin, and he knows what works and what doesnāt. However, leaving a secure and well-paid corporate job is never going to be an easy decision, especially when the move is to the rocky world of startups! So, why did Marino do it? And does he ever regret his decision?
Demos and Nargis will be raring to pick Marinoās brains on every aspect of corporate vs startup, and theyāll also be getting to grips with how to find support in the startup world. Whilst being a founder is exciting, it can also feel lonely. Any problems are your own to fix, and sometimes you might miss having someone give you a pat on the back after a hard day. So, what advice does Marino have? Well⦠weād be spoiling the episode if we told you that!
With our guest having donned a lot of different hats across his career, we'll also be talking about fulfilment at work, and how the safety and security of employment isnāt always synonymous with being happy. As Marino says, now he gets to wake up with founder-focused worries in the middle of the night and to take terrifying risks, but somehow, itās⦠brilliant! It might sound ridiculous, but the world of startups never promised to be sensible!
Marino's startup is fuelled more by his heart for positive change, than by turning a profit (although that always has to feature, of course!). Weād all like to know how to make a meaningful business a successful one, and Eva Latam has done both. According to Marino, this journey has something to do with reading and⦠TikTok? Itās time for some serious brain-picking on this one, because whatever Marino is doing is working, and the proof is really in the (insurance-flavoured) pudding.
Weāre also keeping Marino on his toes, and weāre bringing some tough questions. Do you know which Latin American country has the most startups? And how many languages are spoken in Latin America? Well, you will by the end of the episode! Letās test our guest!

When it comes to finding a niche in the market, and responding to it with simplicity but accuracy, George and Sebastian are your guys. Founders of yourbusinessnumber, they know all the bumps that can appear on the startup road, having faced failures in their own pursuits, and differences in their partnership. Nothing is ever straightforward, right?! We also have an incredible plot twist for you that you wonāt want to miss. Letās just say itās got something to do with Gary Lineker (we know you just got a bit curious!).
George and Sebastian founded YourBusinessNumber because they spotted something missing in an already successful business. It's niche, but it has become their USP, making them stand out from the crowd (always tough as a startup!). Their business is built on the back of Whatsapp Business, offering virtual numbers. In light of the recent shift away from email and towards phones as the primary means of business communication, building a business around a popular messaging service is a smart idea. After all, startups need to resonate with the market if theyāre going to succeed!
George and Sebastian recognised that managing professional communication on our personal devices, can be intrusive, making it harder to set those all-important boundaries between work and relaxation. We all need to be able to turn off, but most of us donāt get to turn off our phones. So, this is where YourBusinessNumber comes in! It provides you with a virtual, second number, so that you can keep your business and private lives separate! We LOVE startups that solve a problem and make day-to-day life better⦠and this is a great example!
However, by building a business which is attached to another, George and Sebastian have created a tricky problem for themselves. What happens if Whatsapp started producing their own virtual numbers? Are they out of a business? Well, they have an answer for this⦠and youāll want to hear it. It has to do with understanding the ecosystem around a major company, and how the competition might evolve. Reflecting on our own potential future problems can be tough ā even demoralising ā but itās also essential to ensure growth in the right direction. As founders, we have to face the good, bad and the realistic, or a competitor will do it for us!
Ok⦠now for the bit youāve been waiting for. No, Gary Lineker isnāt on our show but⦠his son is! Georgeās surname is Lineker, and it was through his father that he and Sebastian met. You can bet that Nargis Jafferali and Demos Demetriou are going to find out all about that story! Plus, get your startup brain ticking, because theyāre also finding out exactly what that means for the business, including whether it helps or hinders, and what personal frustrations and successes it has brought for George. It might not be a reality many of us face, but every experience is a learning opportunity!
Weāre also digging deep to find out how YourBusinessNumber distinguishes itself from its competition, including finding out exactly what it means to āeat your own dog foodā, a phrase they live and work buy. Weāre also talking all about why customer service matters, how to do it well, and what the future of their business looks like, as well as the importance and lack of education on investments and startups more generally. Weāre dismantling the image of the rockstar entrepreneur, offering a reality check on how tough startups can be, but how rich the rewards are when youāve worked for them yourself! Letās talk startups!
It can be tough when you hit bumps in the road, but there is no one more experienced and down-to-earth to d
Ever daydreamed about having a million users? Well for this weekās founder, itās not just a dream, but a reality. Roberto has grown GreenJinn from a concept to a success, and we want to hear all about how he did it. To sweeten this weekās episode even more, GreenJinn is offering all listeners a FREE Tonyās Chocoloney chocolate bar! So, from researching the marketplace, to accessing free chocolate, letās pick some brains (and chocolate flavours)!
To get your free chocolate bar, download the GreenJinn app at https://bit.ly/3TQJ4fo then go to your profile and type in āBLAZONā to reveal your exclusive offer!
Roberto and his colleague, Giuseppe, founded GreenJinn together because of two shared passions: food and healthy, sustainable living. They had their lightbulb moment and an idea was born: to enable shoppers to save money on grocery bills, without having to cut down on the things they love. GreenJinn presents offers to users, who simply scan their receipts and get money straight back into their bank account. Simple. Or at least, simple in theory. In reality, startups are rarely simple.
GreenJinn faced an age-old problem: the chicken-or-the-egg issue. How do you get members if you donāt have offers? How do you secure offers if you donāt have members? It sounds like a pickle, but with an innovative mindset and a gritty determination, Roberto was able to connect with the right marketplace to instigate steady and methodical growth, identifying the right consumers and tactically funding the right offers to get the business moving. Nargis and Demos will be getting all the inside information, and digging for Robertoās top three tips on growing an extensive user base. He's in for a thorough quizzing!
And if the business-quizzing isnāt enough, weāve got a mini 'The Price Is Right' challenge to see how much Roberto knows about the prices of everyday grocery products. So, if you fancy testing your own knowledge alongside that of a pro, youāre in for a treat. Oh, and you might just decide that you would quite like to join the GreenJinn community and start getting money back every time you shop! So, letās talk advertising techniques, social media use and financial realities.
A successfully growing startup such as GreenJinn makes for a great case study on how businesses can connect with consumers meaningfully and at the perfect moment. Their team has flourished, despite the difficulty in affording tech talent in a competitive recruitment market and, on top of that, their brand ethos has developed into an important message. Who knows, the growth of GreenJinn just might provide the inspiration that supercharges your own growth!
Growing pains are normal, but the payoff can be fantastic. Are you ready to hear about the green genie magic that turned one business from a fantasy to a reality? Letās talk startups!

A good coach can change a life, but a great coach can build a business out of it! This week, weāre bringing you one who can do both ā oh, and she was a professional volleyball player too. Impressed yet? Thereās moreā¦
In an age of self-love and self-improvement, there is a high demand for life coaches. Founder of āRD Coaching and Consultingā, Rasa, knows from personal experience what impact a good coach can have. She has combined this experience of supercharging her life with her extensive knowledge of consulting and finances, to create: āRD Coachingā. Itās a company that knows that extraordinary results come from an extraordinary mindset.
Most people think that success is 80% strategy and 20% mindset, but Rasa is here to tell us exactly why thatās not the case. She reminds us that working on ourselves is the hardest but most reliable investment of them all, because if you believe you can do it then you probably can. Whilst weāre on the subject of investment: Rasa has loads (and we mean LOADS) of insights that you cannot miss. With a career history in finance, she has experience in mergers, acquisitions and valuations ā and, fortunately for our listeners ā sheās willing to share all her insider tips.
If youāre a number-cruncher, you can rely on Demos Demetriou to bring all the practical and financial questions. Heās sussing out how to get valuations when you have no business-history, why exactly it is that founders donāt always hear back from investors and more! However, when Nargis Jafferali smells determination like Rasaās, you know she canāt help shaking it up a bit! Ever wondered what a successful business woman would do with a dolphin? Probably not, but we bet youāre wondering now!
We know that startups arenāt always straightforward. Everyone wants a unicorn business, but the reality is often a bit less soft and fluffy. When the going gets tough, itās important to hear from someone who recognises the difficulties youāre facing, whilst also offering experienced advice. Rasa is brimming with it, which is why she connects so well with her clients, particularly with female entrepreneurs. She believes that no one needs a life coach, but that anyone could benefit from one; this honest but passionate approach is what makes her business so evidently remarkable.
So, if youāre ready to learn about the financial realities of investment, the business side of coaching, or just about the right thing to do when a dolphin turns up on your doorstep, listen now! Letās talk startups!

This weekās guest is turning the volume UP! Because however noisy it gets in startup land, it can always get louder.
For founder Sophia, there is always space to amplify a diverse range of voices, and thatās what āViolet Simonā is all about: making sure that women from all backgrounds have a platform. Itās a great ethic and ā to make things even better ā sheās built a business out of it! Sophia believes in shouting from the rooftops, so letās hear what sheās shouting about. Letās talk startups!
Born from a need for representation, āViolet Simonā produces inspiring articles and an eye-opening magazine-book that will have you itching to follow in the footsteps of the women it features. Driven by the personal dedication and commitment of a woman who cares, āViolet Simonā is a testimony to all that Sophia stands for, and weāre on the edge of our seats waiting to hear exactly what makes her tick! From seeing competitors as allies, to monetising a calling, Sophia knows all about building a principled and passionate startup from scratch.
However, the going hasnāt always been smooth. There are questions that plague every young business: how do you find the right connections? How do you get heard when everyone is making noise? And ā most importantly ā how do you turn a good idea into a great business? Well, we wouldnāt want to divulge all of those answers too soon, but ā for āViolet Simonā ā it has something to do with authentic storytelling, representation and equality. Not bad foundations!
Here at blazon, we believe that a successful startup is one that meets a need. Certainly, there has long been a need to correct the gender narrative and there are some uncomfortable statistics to prove this: for example, 69% of women would prefer to understate their accomplishments, but 83% would value hearing about othersā. Sophia has seen the need for change. From the lack of coverage of womenās struggles, to the need for encouraging of all women to be bold and take up space, āViolet Simonā has heard the call and responded with zeal.
With so much need for uplifting women, publications like Sophiaās represent a union between business and empowerment⦠and what a perfect pairing that is. Startups ARE empowering, so a startup that is ABOUT empowerment is something that you already know @Nargis and @Demos are excited to get their teeth into! Theyāll be sussing out how social media has worked (or hasnāt), how competitors can also be friends, and what to do when you find yourself facing rejection.
From creating a platform for your passion, to capitalising on your cause, Sophia knows how to run a business that matters. She makes space for women to be bold, and who better to do so than a bold woman?!

As founders, we're all used to 'knocking on a few doors' to get results. In fact, when you're seeking investment, that's imperative. But this founder has taken this strategy to a whole new (and very literal) level...!!
In this episode, co-hosts Demos Demetriou and Nargis Jafferali are in conversation with Moiz Janjua, the aspirational founder of SplitTrip.
Like so many, he based the idea for this startup on a personal experience - a young student with a desire to explore the country but on a shoestring University budget. SplitTrip allows students to organise safe and easy ride-sharing journeys across the UK, and it's designed to encourage people to carpool and save money.
But Moiz wondered how he would finance this project, and started a "roadtrip" of his own to securing investment. How he did it and why he did it that way will blow your mind! He says: "Sometimes Founders have to do things outside of the box" - and he wasn't kidding!
Demos and Nargis are questioning this startup's extreme niche focus, challenging the costs, and discussing the map for the future of SplitTrip - with a few tests of Moiz's knowledge along the way, naturally!
Is his ethos of "Enjoy the journey, not just the destination" enough to guarantee success? Let's Talk Startups!

It's a colourful masterclass in our next conversation, as we prepare to learn more about navigating major disruption...but as a first-time founder!
Sounds like a contradiction doesn't it? Surely inspiration only comes from those who've spent years in the game? Co-founders and long-time friends, John Stubbs and Emma Bestley may be new to startup land, but they've got tons of advice to share, and our notebooks are ready.
Their startup, YesColours, may look like a new paint brand from the offset, but their sustainably-packaged range of paint pouches is only the start. They are a colour company, on a mission to change people's perception of colour and unite communities through colour.
Hosts Nargis and Demos are challenging the risk associated with taking on a massively crowded market with their products, as well as the team's knowledge of this sector, and we'll be taking a deep dive to uncover their personal insights to share with you all.
They may be determined to remain proud disruptors in every aspect of their business, a company that's "not led by trends", but as first-time founders, is that really the best approach to take? Let's talk startups!

Money is pretty important, right? And when youāve worked hard for your cash, you want to know that your investments are meaningful, especially when the world needs us. Thatās where new startup, Etcho, comes in! Founded by the great minds of Charlie and Liall, Etcho is about uniting morals and money by providing information on sustainable investing. Who knows, it might just be the app that saves the world!
Weāre picking Charlieās brains to find out how heās uniting his investment expertise with his passion for change. Itās not always been straightforward, but it wouldnāt be a startup if it was, would it? There are always hurdles along the way, something Charlie knows all about. From managing working with family, to monetising morals, startups are complicated, but when your heart is in it, itās worth every sacrifice.
Etcho is driven by passion and by skill ā our two favourite things! So weāre intrigued to hear all of the brilliant (but disturbing) revelations that Charlie is bringing to our conversation. Heās divulging all of the ugly truths about the greenwashing nature of EFTs and EFGs, from tobacco stocks to oil. His revelations prove that investors need more transparency⦠in fact, they need an app that provides the information which usually lives in the inaccessible depths of the small print. Cue: Etcho!
Due to launch soon, Etcho is changing sustainability from a formality into a priority and helping investors who want to do their bit to do it well. You already know that weāre obsessed with startups at blazon, but we especially love to see startups that identify a problem and create a business around solving it. Weāre fascinated to hear where Charlie is up to on his journey, but Nargis and Demos wonāt be leaving the discussion there. Charlieās experience of safeguarding his app against disaster, managing work-life balance and of remaining goal-focussed in the face of obstacles makes him the perfect person to talk to. Letās talk startups!
From building a business, to developing an app, Charlieās experiences promise to teach us a lot. But, if you know us, you already know that weāll be throwing Charlie a few curveballs, so if you think you can keep up, get ready for some surprise quiz questions and test your knowledge of green investments against the pro. When the world is in need of change, weāre glad there are people like Charlie working on it.
So, are you ready to bury what you think you know and dig deep into the world of sustainable investment? Letās talk startups!

"85% of the world's population needs orthodontic dental treatment, but only 1% can actually get it." Imagine if you could tap into this colossal market and provide dentists with more opportunity, whilst also boosting their personal revenue potential...?
Imagine no more - because this week's guest, Nipun Kathuria is here to demonstrate exactly how the team at Smile Genius Dental are achieving this. Let's talk startups!
Their path to market is a careful, methodical one, with plenty of testing, plenty of user feedback, and plenty of research. At this early-stage of a startup business, it's important to take the time to define what the business is and who it's for, and build up a brand that really fits the market - as opposed to rushing something and getting it completely wrong.
But Nipun's no stranger to this approach - he's got a strong marketing background behind him, so he understands more than anyone why timing is so key. And, coupled with his dental expert team, he knows all about the hidden secrets of the dental world that he's keen to put right.
What secrets you ask?! Well, did you know that not all dentists floss their own teeth regularly?
If you want to learn more home truths, this episode is a must-listen, as hosts Demos Demetriou and Nargis Jafferali challenge Nipun and ask those difficult questions. (We've even got time for a quick quiz!)
How is Smile Genius Dental revolutionising the digital dentistry sector? Let's find out...

Thereās no one better to talk about startups than investment experts with a startup of their own, so this week weāre bringing you all the pro tips and lightbulb moments from BETA100 founders, Camilla Carrapatoso and May Ireland. They believe you can build anything into a business; are you ready to hear how?
Camilla and May know how to work with businesses. They also know that not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. At times, it can be gruelling and if you donāt do the work, you donāt get the pay day. Itās a harsh reality, especially if you come from a stable and successful career to begin with, something our guests know first-hand. However, thereās nothing quite like working on your passion⦠especially when you get to be boss; itās what makes startups contagious, and weāve caught the bug!
BETA100 is all about uniting talent with opportunity. Those looking to invest their time and passion can be rewarded with cash, commission and equity, all whilst helping startups to flourish! Itās a brilliant space where founders can find the skill-base they need and investors can discover their next challenge. We LOVE to see incredible professional relationships like these developing, so Nargis Jafferali and Demos Demetriou will be providing a thorough grilling as they get to grips with Camilla and Mayās amazing story. Theyāve gone from corporate employees to independent founders and we want to hear it all. No one gets off lightly here!
At blazon, weāre not shy. The conversation will include all the difficult bits: building a startup means making yourself vulnerable in a new market. When you lack structure, experience and money, you might think youāll never make it⦠but we believe otherwise! In fact, entrepreneurship is on the rise and there is more opportunity than ever before; weāll hear how you can even build a business from a newsletter!
Insights and energy like Camilla and Mayās are what makes conversations like these so important. From founders who are less broke than you might think, to how to find the right team, to top tips and biggest mistakes; there is so much to learn from our guests. They had their own lightbulb moments and by sharing them, they might just prompt yours!

In this episode, weāre talking about building businesses solo: it requires tenacity, ambition and out-of-the-box thinking ā and weāre going to cover it all, from startups to staplers (and if you canāt think of five ways to use a stapler, youāre going to want to listen!).
Weāre picking Adam Faulknerās brain to learn about all things visual and musical, as we hear about his super-exciting startup, CreativeAF. As a solo founder, he knows that creative minds need to network and connect with other creative minds: we can keep each other excited, have idea-rich conversations and get sparks flying. So, letās talk startups!
Born from making mixology videos in a homemade bar during covid, CreativeAF is all about showcasing every businessā unique story through personalised videos and soundtracks. There is nothing more important than the message you give to the world, and Adam knows this. Itās what gets his creative brain ticking!
Weāll hear about how he uses his diverse experiences performing, travelling and working as a journalist to create unique content with a personal touch. However, Nargis Jafferali and Demos Demetriou wonāt be letting Adam off easily! Weāll find out how heās worked around othersā mistakes and his own to build the business heās passionate about, despite all the hurdles.
The world has changed a lot in recent years, and businesses have had to keep up. Finding new clients and new work whilst adapting a business to fit the needs of the world around it can be both tough and lonely, especially if youāre venturing out alone. Adam has done it all solo, so weāre exploring his journey from idea to reality to understand how he has kept one driving question at the heart of all heās done: āwhatās next?ā
When bold originality meets technical expertise and business acumen, you get exciting content; itās the brainchild of marketing and creativity. Ready to hear how Adam does it?

This week, weāre hearing how to turn vision into reality and how to face the trickiest of financial, technical and practical situations with creativity and vigour. Letās talk startups!
This week weāre getting scientific with Kate Scott and Vicki Godfrey, talking about their incredible startup, DNApal.me. Weāre learning more about the wonderful world of DNA and how using its insights can make us healthier and happier. Kate and Vicki have the skills and the drive, and now theyāre sharing their knowledge and experiences on how to turn this enthusiasm into a business. There is always more to learn in the world of startups!
DNApal examines DNA to make a tailor-made health plan to meet your health needs, whilst also considering your financial limitations. You can go from a cheek swab to detailed information on diet, sleep, stress, fitness, immunity, heart and hormone health, all with a lifestyle consultant and nutritional experts to hold your hand. We love that DNApal have such a heart for health!
But as we all know, passion alone isnāt enough. So, Nargis Jafferali and Demos Demetriou are drawing out some answers about how to transform this passion into success. They're digging to find out how to fund a project when you donāt have investment, thinking about how crowdfunding can offer a solution, and what to do when that starts to crumble in the face of a recession.
These founders are also talking tech. Incredible when it goes well, but disastrous when it doesnāt, Kate and Vicky know all about IT problems, from coding disasters to hiccups in the app development process. We know it must be worth it in the long-run, but would Kate and Vicky do it all again if they could?
Startups are as rewarding as they are challenging, but it can be difficult to see this in the midst of a storm. DNApal know all about weathering the toughest storms, but theyāve learnt to dance in the rain.

Weāre back! The long-awaited season 2 is here, and weāre more excited than ever to share all of our inspiring conversations with you. Letās talk startups!
In the first episode back, Nargis Jafferali and Demos Demetriou are in conversation with founder Oliver Andersen-Cox about his exciting new startup app, Ping Culture. Theyāre brimming with ideas, out-of-the-box thinking and inspiration, and theyāre not shying away from the difficult conversations either.
Ollie is entering the crowded market of London tourism. It's competitive, but Ping Culture knows that nothing worthwhile comes easily. We'll hear about how their app recommends the right places for the right people, and learn that the right USP can get you noticed. Ping Culture values quality over quantity: does their approach work?
In this episode, we're talking money, investment and how to grow a userbase with integrity. Ollieās own experiences offer to teach us some valuable lessons about what works and what doesnāt, and what to do when you find that one approach isnāt working the way you hoped it would.
We know already that the land of startups is not always straightforward: founders get the highest highs and the lowest lows. Nargis and Demos are discussing how to keep building when the world tells you it canāt be done. Theyāre also talking about the births of startups, because sometimes the best things are born from the worst, and Ollieās story is the perfect example. He knows exactly why startups matter.

When you realise that 40% of customers refuse to buy from a site that's not in their native language, you start to appreciate the value of personal understanding.
This is the story of two founders taking on a $46 billion industry, and doing so with a deeply personal human touch.
In this episode of 'Let's Talk Startups', co-hosts Nargis Jafferali and Demos Demetriou are in conversation with husband and wife duo Robert and Mariona Bolohan, Co-founders of Lotuly.
We're challenging their traditional concept of human translation, to investigate whether their startup can survive in a world that's so tech-reliant, and what makes them stand out?
Bootstrapping their growth, managing over 500 freelancers, controlling their client's entire reputations, and trying to be sustainable and personable - that's an awful amount of pressure to handle!
