Donn is a former police officer in the East Bay of California who is now a therapist specializing with first responders, military personnel and their families (complex trauma and PTSI). Donn is definitely not the patches-on-the-sleeves, tell me about your mother type of therapist. A little more “no nonsense”, Donn finds that the people with whom he resonates are some of the most “anti-therapy” people you can imagine, because that’s “where he came from.” Growing up in Oklahoma, he was steeped in the usual “emotions are weakness” mentality, and having somehow come out on the other side, gleaned from it some self-awareness and motivational tools that make understanding the struggle, and ultimately getting help, easier. Listen in and find out about the new “mission.”

This was a really fun interview with an incredibly well spoken and insightful young woman.
Beth's mom contacted me about having her on the show due to her unique perspective. She was about pre-teen age when her step father, who had been in her life from a young age, became a police officer. Beth navigated the transition. Now, as a young adult, gets to provide her insight and guidance to her little sisters and her mom and step dad as they raise her little sisters. Even more, Beth is currently studying to follow in her step father's foot steps and find her own career in the corrections field, working at the same locate he once did.
We also talk about her mom and the work her mom does with first responders.

Today’s episode features an active police officer who wants to share about the importance of family and mental health, as a police officer. Mike has been a cop for about 8 years. He is married with two young daughters.
He was also recently featured on Abby Ellsworth’s Podcast - On Being a Police Officer.
Balancing work, life, mental health, and family can be tough but is so important and I really enjoyed listening to Mike’s perspective on things as again, he is an active officer and is raising a young family of his own. His openness and willingness to share is inspiring and sets an example for other officers around him. I hope you enjoy this episode and Mike’s insight as much as I did!

This was one of my favorite conversations to date. It was so much fun to sit down with another LE (adult) kid and hear about her experiences and share how we were each affected. There were a lot of similarities and a lot of differences - Erin's story is so impactful and she shares it honestly and beautifully. Beyond that, Erin has also done a lot of research in this field so she speaks to both her experiences and learnings through research.
Be sure to leave a review and let us know what you took away from our discussion!

Today's episode might be a bit controversial but I would love to hear what you think and open the door for conversation around this topic. When I started by company, I made a conscious decision for my podcast, my community, and my platform to offer support specific law enforcement officers and their families. I have been questioned and challenged on this several times and this episode will explain my decision.
For starters, I am the daughter niece, and cousin of police officers. My brother is a nurse but I am otherwise not acquainted or connected with other first or second responders. Therefore, law enforcement life is what I know. Additionally, law enforcement has their own set of nuances to navigate than even other first responders don't necessarily experience.
There is no doubt that all first and second responders need support and resources and share many challenges due to the nature of their fields. Luckily, there are several of those and I am happy to provide the information for several that I trust to anyone who needs it. Beyond the Uniform was designed by the LT's Daughter to support law enforcement families specifically.

Anthony is a great example of someone who was able to leave work and work and find a healthy home/work life balance. On this episode, we discuss how police work is seemingly a regular 9-5 job but with very dangerous and even traumatic situations. Because of this, it is even more important to establish a life outside the job – and keep them separate. Law enforcement is your job, not your life or your identity.
