Cataclean helps reduce MOT failures

Cars that are over three years old could pass their MOTs with a sigh of relief if they use an emissions-reducing additive.

That’s the message from leading liquid science producer Cataclean which is helping to keep motorists on the road. In May 2018, stricter emissions tests came into force which in turn have added to a huge rise in MOT failures due to emissions. Diesel cars are particularly affected with a surge of diesel MOT failures at a staggering rise of 240%!

Cataclean’s message is simple, explains Sales Director William Jones: “You add Cataclean to your fuel tank and the liquid is carried, with the fuel, through the fuel system, cleaning carbon build-up as it comes into contact with it. Cataclean’s cleaning formula cleans everything the fuel comes into contact with including the fuel injectors, cylinder heads, intake valves and oxygen sensors. Then upon combustion in the combustion chamber, Cataclean creates a vapour that continues through the system to clean carbon from the exhaust and the catalytic converter.”

In 2020, a staggering 1.3 million vehicles failed their MOTs due to high emissions, but Cataclean can help them succeed at a second test. For example, in July to September 2020, 1.9 million vehicles failed an MOT but over 551,000 passed after remedial work. Cataclean is urging motorists to use the product more regularly to avoid any fear of failure.

Brand ambassador and British Touring Car Championship racing driver Dan Rowbottom uses Cataclean in his motor engineering business and is fully supportive of its benefits. “Most people use Cataclean as a ‘rescue-me’ product,” he explains. “However, once you have used it and passed that MOT, we find motorists see the benefits, not just in passing the MOT but better fuel economy, better performance and better emissions. We recommend that drivers use a bottle of Cataclean once a quarter to stay well ahead of the emissions tests.”

Cataclean began in 1995 and has an estimated 20 million customers. Not once has it received a single warranty claim against its product, the ultimate endorsement.

“It’s not just the MOT that Cataclean helps with,” says Rowbottom. “Cataclean looks after your car for the long-term.”

Don’t let E10 confuse you, says Cataclean

The benefits of E10 fuel shouldn’t be misunderstood, says emissions-buster Cataclean. With this summer being the trigger point for E10, motorists are looking at switching to the new fuel but Cataclean warns people to understand the implications of making the switch.

E10 is compatible for 95% of cars and all built after 2011 are able to use the new fuel. E10 contains 10% renewable ethanol, which helps to reduce carbon dioxide emission whereas current petrol, known as E5, contains only 5% renewable ethanol.

However, older vehicles aren’t able to use the new fuel meaning that their emissions are needed to be reduced by liquids such as Cataclean, while diesel cars and other vehicles won’t be able to use E10. That means that Cataclean is still crucial for fuel economy, increased performance and reduced emissions, and Cataclean is keen to remind motorists that the new fuel isn’t the only way of reducing emissions.

Government data suggests that a slight improvement in fuel consumption is expected, but Cataclean argues against that. Because ethanol has a lower calorific value, cars will need more of it so actually E10 will force a increase in fuel consumption. There is a danger as well of extra carbon build up because the E10 has a less efficient burn which will contribute to the extra carbon. Used with Cataclean, though, and fuel consumption and the removal of carbon build-up can be improved. Another key factor to use Cataclean is the need for cars to pass their MOTs and with fewer new cars being built and a greater number of older cars still on the road, the need to keep them in good condition in order to pass an MOT is greater than ever.

There is another key aspect to E10 and that is that for certain vehicles the ethanol can create damage in fuel cells and damage parts such as rubber seals and other components.

So, which vehicles aren’t able to use E10? The huge market for classic and cherished vehicles isn’t able to use E10, some models from the early 2000s and all cars built before, plus some mopeds under 50cc. That means that Cataclean is as vital as ever and using the existing E5 fuel with a bottle of Cataclean will keep you on the road.

Says Cataclean Sales Director William Jones: “E10 is being billed as a step forward, but we are concerned that people are being confused. Our data shows that E10 can harm engines and have a negative effect on fuel consumption, meaning that the aim of helping to reduce emissions is being missed altogether. However, you can achieve a lot more by a bottle of Cataclean and we are able to prove the benefits of the product by the number of cars using it that pass their MOTs first time with no fear of a problem over their emissions. Cataclean keeps you car on the road for longer.”

Cataclean keeps Scottish motorists on the road

Emissions-busting liquid Cataclean is keeping Scottish motorists on the road. That’s the message from Cataclean, which is helping to boost its profile in Scotland with associate sponsorship of the British Touring Car Championship race weekend at Knockhill, Fife.

Recent figures suggest that the Fife coastal town of Kirkcaldy has just 55% of the regions cars passing their MOTs at the first attempt, while Aberdeen and Dundee are also seen to rank poorly.

However Cataclean can keep motorists on the road with a simple application of the liquid into a car’s fuel tank once every three months, explains Sales Director William Jones: “You add Cataclean to your fuel tank and the liquid is carried, with the fuel, through the fuel system, cleaning carbon build-up as it comes into contact with it. Cataclean’s cleaning formula cleans everything the fuel comes into contact with including the fuel injectors, cylinder heads, intake valves and oxygen sensors. With Scottish motorists eager to be out and about once more with the lifting of restrictions, Cataclean is doing its best to help them stay on the move.

Stunning start for Halfords Racing with Cataclean in BTCC opener

Halfords Racing with Cataclean kicked off its 2021 British Touring Car Championship campaign with three top 10 finishes from drivers Dan Rowbottom and Gordon Shedden at Thruxton, Hampshire, at the weekend.

The newly-titled squad, operated by Team Dynamics, brings Scotsman Shedden back to the team with which he has won three BTCC titles and offers Rowbottom a perfect platform on which to showcase his ability in the BTCC.

Thruxton’s qualifying session was a lottery with a wet road drying out towards the end of the 30-minute session, meaning that the correct tyre choice at the optimum time was essential. Gordon qualified eighth, with Dan 16th, but hopes were high for a dry raceday.

The first 16-lap race of the season, shown live on ITV4, began with a bang as Gordon had to avoid a slowing Ollie Jackson (Ford Focus) on the opening lap, but as he did so he tangles with Chris Smiley’s Hyundai putting both out of the race at high speed. It meant a lot of damage was sustained by Flash’s Halfords Racing with Cataclean Honda Civic Type R and a lot of work for the Team Dynamics mechanics before race two. Dan, however, avoided all the dramas on the opening lap and in his first race for the team charged up to seventh place with some brave moves around the outside at the Chicane. Dan’s seventh place netted more points in one race than he had scored in his entire rookie season of 2019!

Dan’s result meant that his Halfords Racing with Cataclean Honda Civic carried 21 kilos of championship success ballast for race two, the first time Dan had raced with weight in his BTCC career. After a race stoppage, Dan made a better getaway at the second time of asking and benefitted from a clash between Adam Morgan (BMW) and Tom Ingram (Hyundai) ahead of him. Dan charged up to fifth place and then battled with double-champion Jason Plato, the 97-times race winner making a mistake under Rowbo’s pressure, allowing Dan to nip by for a career-best fourth place.

Gordon’s Halfords Racing with Cataclean Honda was still suffering the effects of its race one damage, meaning he was a frustrated 18th, and the team needing to spend more time working on the car before race three.

As the cars headed to the grid, the rain fell for race three. Dan elected to start on wet tyres, but as the road dried, he dived for the pit lane and changed on to slicks. However, the fickle weather conditions meant that as he rejoined the circuit, the rain fell again necessitating a second pit stop to go back on to wets. That cost Dan a lap and dropped him to 21stplace, while Flash, on his wet tyres, charged up to a tremendous fourth place from the back of the grid as the rain fell again late-race.

The results of the opening three races of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship put Dan Rowbottom seventh and Gordon Shedden 11th in the standings. Dan is also second in the Jack Sears Trophy for drivers yet to achieve an overall podium finish.

The next races in the British Touring Car Championship are at Snetterton, Norfolk, on June 12/13. Qualifying will be shown on itv.com on Saturday June 12th with all the raceday action on Sunday June 13th live on ITV4.
