Sci-fi author Alex White (they/them) joins us to discuss the state of the Alien franchise: they would know, having written two of the best novels in the Alien universe! We get into Ridley Scott’s death grip over the direction of the franchise, the frustrating politics of queer visibility, and ask, just what WAS Burke’s plan in Aliens?

Find Alex’s latest: August Kitko And The Mechas from Space, at your local indie bookshop for your queer apocalyptic mecha fix!

Our Weird Science season begins with a deep dive into Michael Crichton's two novels, adapted into Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World (1997). Also discussed; Crichton's awful world views, clever scriptwriting by David Koepp to adapt the sauropod-sized books, the birth of CGI in tandem with production, and which dinosaurs we are.

This is our biggest and densest episode to date, and yet it's one of two parts, as we will be discussing every sequel beyond The Lost World in a later episode... Frankly we got so preoccupied with whether or not we could that we didn't stop to think if we should.

Christmas is time to celebrate the things we hold dear, like lesbian milfs. We discuss the wonderful Carol (2015) and it's thriller-esque source novel, Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt (1952). We learn about it's origins as elaborate fanfic from a real life encounter, and why we can't uncritically stan Highsmith...

We venture into The Zone to unpack the torturous process of bringing the Strugatskys' Roadside Picnic to life under the direction of the legendary/terrifying Andrei Tarkovsky. Along the way we discuss dodgy translations, ruined film stock and a lowkey goated open world rpg shooter.

We strap on our spiked leather gloves to discuss the slow-burn dread of Norman Jewison's Rollerball (1975), and demonstrate our commitment to Truth, Journalism and the Transgender Way by watching hardcore porn parody Rollerbabies (1976). In a controlled environment. As friends. It was better than John McTiernan's insane 2002 effort by the way, and we talk about that too...

We take a break from dystopias to mark easter by going down the rabbit-hole on the po-faced Night of The Lepus (1972), and its surprisingly subversive source novel The Year Of The Angry Rabbit (1964)

We watch Richard Fleischer's Soylent Green (1973), a movie with a very different take on soyboy society compared to its source, Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room! (1966) resulting in some serious writer's beef. Delicious.

With our second episode on Logan's Run, maladapted explores an abandoned overgrown Washington DC, the sad story of two friends wrestling to deprogram each other and Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

We then get a little into the attempts to remake the film.

Maladapted is a trans, lefty podcast hosted by Lindsay (she/her) and Robyn (they/them). One of us will read a book, we'll both watch its screen adaptation and then talk about what works and what gets lost in translation.

This week as part of our season on 70's dystopian visions, we're talking about the 1976 film Logans Run.
