In this episode, we’re going to talk about nervous system regulation and what fight, flight, and freeze truly look like. Today’s guest, Stacy B—an author, journalist, and nervous system evangelist—is going to share her story about living with what she calls functional freeze. We’ll discuss how complex trauma affects our nervous system and explore the tools we can use to find peace. The stress from complex trauma and undiagnosed neurodivergence, along with serving as a caregiver for over a decade, pushed staci b’s nervous system into a continuous state of high alert. Determined not to let her fate be eternal survival mode, she embarked on a journey that led her to become a Nervous System Regulation Evangelist. With hundreds of hours of research under her belt, Staci translates complex science into easily digestible information and points the way to valuable resources that empower others to create a nervous system regulation practice that works best for them. A journalist, author, and speaker, staci highlights the value of nervous system regulation by openly sharing her own stories, both in person and in The Nervous System: Before and After, an essay series on Substack. By providing real-life examples of her own behavior in situations and relationships before she began a nervous system regulation practice and after, she illustrates the depth of the benefits available from this work. Today, Emily interviews Dr. Barry Krakow, a specialist in Sleep Medicine with expertise in mental health and sleep quality. Dr. Krakow discusses his research emphasizing that sleep quality outweighs sleep quantity, directly impacting both mental and physical well-being. Specifically, he explores how nasal breathing influences sleep depth and methods to enhance sleep quality. Dr. Krakow's findings reveal a link between poor sleep and various medical conditions like anxiety, depression, and more, as detailed in his book "Life-Saving Sleep: New Horizons in Mental Health Treatment." He stresses the importance of mental health professionals being trained in Sleep Medicine to ensure clients are screened for optimal sleep quality, given the significant correlation between sleep and mental health issues. Barry Krakow, MD is a board certified sleep medicine specialist practicing in Savannah, Georgia following a 30 year career conducting research and treating mental health patients with sleep disorders. He developed and pioneered several advanced methods for the treatment of insomnia, nightmares, and sleep apnea, published these findings in top scientific journals, and proved conclusively the necessity to diligently address (without medication) sleep complaints in those suffering anxiety, depression, PTSD and more. His new book, Life Saving Sleep New Horizons in Mental Health treatment offers a mind-body approach to the art and science of sleep medicine with special emphasis on the relationships between sleep physiology and sleep-related emotion-focused therapy. His new practice involves an innovative sleep health coaching program, accessed at www.barrykrakowmd.com, and you can follow his free Substack newsletter on sleep research updates at www.fastasleep.substack.com. Currently, as Director of Sleep Medicine Services at Gateway Behavioral Health, a full-scale application of sleep medicine interventions will be integrated didactically and clinically into the existing psychiatry residency program to become a core component of training and utilization. www.lifesavingsleep.com www.sleeptreatment.com www.nightmaretreatment.com LIFE SAVING SLEEP, NOW AVAILABLE AT https://www.amazon.com/dp/0971586926

Hi, Hi, Hi!

This is a topic that keeps coming up and up in our therapy practice so LETS TALK ABOUT IT.

Sound familiar?

Are you someone who constantly finds themselves overthinking relationships? Do you often wonder if your partner truly cares for you or if you're good enough for them? Relationship anxiety is real, my friends, and it can stem from various factors such as attachment styles, past negative experiences, low self-esteem, and poor communication skills. But fear not, because there are ways to overcome this anxiety and build healthier relationships.

Here are some of the major points Olivia hits on this episode...

  • Relationship anxiety can lead to behaviors such as seeking constant reassurance, controlling actions, doubts about compatibility, and overanalyzing words and actions.

  • Overcoming relationship anxiety involves communicating feelings, living in the present moment, confronting anxiety, and going to therapy to understand and change relationship patterns.

  • This is crucial - self-awareness and addressing personal issues is crucial to create healthy and meaningful relationships.

Remember, you deserve to be in a relationship where you feel valued, supported, and at ease.

Olivia Pelts walks you through the first component to developing your "rule of life" -- priorities.

For many of us, we unconsciously scoot through life doing the things but don't always sit down to consider why and what is taking our energy, money and time. Olivia will give you some helpful questions to consider in figuring out what your priorities are and in the coming episodes, she'll help you develop a plan on how to execute.

Today is a super fun one as we collabed with a local therapist turned artist....Ezra Sembler ☀️

Ezra is a local artist born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida specializing in black and white playful line drawings. You may have seen his work at some of our favorite hang outs like Book & Bottle, Blush Tea & Coffee, Black Crow Coffee, Pete’s Bagels, and probably on Instagram because unlike other artists, Ezra is extremely outgoing and connected with his fan-base. 🤘🏽 In this episode, Samantha Circelli discusses Ezra’s dynamic background in mental health including his own personal experiences, his career as a mental health counselor, and how art has shaped his healing.

The Grey Area Experience was born out of a lack of diversity and inclusion in Emily and Tabitha's own place of work and they wanted to bring honoring and challenging conversations to the forefront.

You know how it is, diversity, racism and inclusion conversations usually become a check box for most corporate places.

Not anymore.

So, lets jump into some incredibly hard but good conversations around racism, diversity and inclusion...

What if we gave you 40,000,000 dollars? Or...40,000,000 steps you would need to perform in order to claim your prize?

That’s a huge number!

Well, unfortunately, that’s the number of Americans suffering from anxiety.

It’s such a big topic right now with most people saying the word in an almost humorous tone, but in all seriousness what does it really look like?

In today’s episode (lucky for you) we have an actual professional in the form of one of our talented hosts, Olivia, to help us out with this one.

You may be experiencing anxiety.

We help you better understand WHAT anxiety is, how it can show up in your life in ways you may not expect and WHAT to do about it.

Are you a perfectionist? If we imagine this person, we think of the Doctor, type A, everything is organized and sorted to “perfection”; but we are referring to another type.

“Perfectionism is not the same thing has striving to be your best. Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgement, and shame. It’s a shield. It’s a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from flight.”

-Brene Brown

Whoa, let that one sink in. Are you trying to be something you're not? Trying to appear a certain way is something that is all to common.

On this episode, Olivia and Amy discuss how they relate to this. What’s more important is how YOU relate to this. Do you exhibit this in your life? Let’s get together and chat about being our true selves shall we?

Okay, take out a sheet of paper and write down 5 things that define you... go ahead... now after you listen to this episode I guarantee you these 5 things might look drastically different.

What defines you?

What a huge question. If you’re not careful you’d be surprised to know you might be playing into unfortunate stereotypes and letting the wrong themes define you.

Olivia and Amy share what they were like growing up and the stereotypes they both encountered. They also discuss how to not let society determine what you think you should be defined by.

Alright, got your 5 things? Great, let’s get into this fresh episode this week with the Nasty Girls.

How often do we see the various challenges that we face as an opportunity? As an invitation to learn something?

Right?

It takes some time getting there. Sometimes we never do, instead we choose to lay down, succumb to the challenge itself and give up. Or we finger point as to whose fault it is, yada yada yada.

In today's episode, Amy and Olivia get after this topic and explore the facets around why we so often choose to be a victim to our challenges versus an opportunity to learn and grow.

You'll get a front row seat to some of the biggest challenges/failures Olivia, personally, has faced in addition to Amy opening up about her own struggles, too.

Buckle up for the vulnerability and knowledge bombs.

We are So excited to be the Mental Health Support Center for the ReNEW YOU Online Challenge. Looking for some accountability? Grab a friend and sign up!

This week we are talking about goals. We have covered goal setting in depth in past episodes but this time we tackle, specifically, how to eliminate distractions in order to achieve your goal(s).

We titled this “head down, eyes forward” because it encapsulates the journey to the end result. A lot of times in fitness/life you find yourself with a goal in mind but we allow distractions in and focus on every little bump in the road making it twice as hard to get there.

Olivia and Amy talk about their journeys to where there are and how a lot of it is really just a bunch of un-sexy habits that eventually lead to success. No one pays attention to the hours you put in behind the scenes but they sure do care about the outcome...That’s ok, head down eyes forward on that goal and you’ll be there in NO TIME!

Hey! Hi! How are you!? Today is a real treat. Olivia brings on one of her favorite people, Rachel Miller. Sit down or go for a walk, grab your tissues, and get ready to be changed. 🤘🏽 Olivia & Rachel walk through what it looks like to not be scared of your pain and the freedom that comes on the other side of it. Rachel is refreshingly honest in this episode about her journey over the last 5 plus years of what it’s looked like to walk through heartache, death, & daily panic attacks. A stripping away of everything that essentially has taught her to slow down and let herself be at home again in her mind & body. We talk about “sacred ground” and what it looks like to be open about all your feelings and still be really loved by your people. Vulnerability, courage, coming home, & choosing to become something different altogether is so beautifully described in this episode. Mental health is a basic human right. It should not be reserved for the privileged — for the elite. At Sunshine City Counseling, we believe that every human should have access to excellent care for their body, spirit and mind. We understand that, for many of us, we are privileged to not even have to think twice about this. For other brothers and sisters, it is not something that has ever been afforded to them. We want that to change. It is our desire to be a part of the solution. We’re excited to bring a rad shirt that you’ll be proud to wear knowing that it is providing hope and healing for those of us who may not be able to afford amazing mental health care otherwise. SO. Buy a sweet tshirt and 100% of the profits will be donated to a fund that will provide reduced rate counseling services for all LGBTQ+ individuals.

It's our way to serve the broader community and celebrate their diversity this PRIDE month!

Parenting is hard.

It's far easier to assume your kids don't need you than to show up for them and do the work.

Perhaps one of the reasons we fail to be present and parent from a place of mindfulness is due to our own internal clutter. We’ve got so much going on and don’t take care of the adult stuff (read: our own personal stuff) that it makes it extremely difficult to find room for our little peoples stuff. Whether that is a busy schedule, work projects, relationship struggles or our own work regarding patterns and beliefs, it all affects us uniquely and ultimately blocks our ability to show up for others.

Lets keep the conversation going...

One of the greatest responsibilities we have as parents is to teach our kids about relationships, emotions, the way the world works. No big deal, right? Their first relationship they will have in this lifetime is with you and your partner. Their first attachment wound or disruption is going to be with you. What are they learning? Is it safe to talk about hard things? Do they just need to suck it up and move along? When they cry do they get told to go to their room?

It really is amazing how we parent from the places that we were given from our parents. How could we not?

There’s a lot of touchy subjects out there when it comes to parenting, best practices and all that jazz. Perhaps one of the more “sensitive” areas is managing your kids screen time. For the most part, the general consensus is that “screen time” should be limited and it isn’t super great for the developing mind.

Yeah, cool, sooooo, why are we so quick to shove an iPad or some other tech piece in front of our kids faces in order to shut them up so mom/dad can have some quiet time? Ooops🙊

In this episode, we'll down and dirty with a bit of a different spin on the whole screen time thing...

🤓Your Relationship Experts 🤓

Cassie Rodriguez.

In this episode, you'll learn all about what got Cassie into counseling, what she believes is the hardest thing about the counseling process and what is a safe place for her to land.

"Cassie is passionate about walking alongside of people as they move towards becoming the people they long to be. Everyone has had seasons of life where they feel discouraged or stuck. These moments can make us feel powerless, frustrated, and alone. We all need safe spaces to be fully ourselves, whatever that is, and get support in moving towards our goals."
