Lately, we've been hearing about Natural Language Processing (NLP) all over, so we decided it was time to have a guest who could chat with us about its values and limitations. Dan Alferov from Heartbeat AI joined Kathryn and Michelle to discuss how sentiment and text analysis play into NLP. In this informational episode, Dan shares some applications for these models, as well as benefits and limitations when using them to understand emotions. If you ever had a question about contextual language processing, this is the episode for you!

supervisedlearning #languageprocessing #emotions

Meet our guest!

Hi, I'm Dan Alferov, the director of empathy analytics at Heartbeat AI. My role involves the intersection of behavioural research and data science to solve business challenges by leveraging emotional analytics of unstructured text data. I am passionate about authentically representing human experience to understand decision-making across diverse groups of individuals, and its implications within healthcare, human resources, and market research. Empathy analytics aims to uncover the emotional drivers which form the experiences of critical demographics and seeks to quantify differences in emotional language expression patterns that represent these drivers.

I am a strong supporter of mental health advocacy, equity, and diversity. I believe in constantly educating myself on my privileges to best support social progress and amplify the voices of those who are systematically disadvantaged. Quantifiable empathy represents both an avenue for prioritization of the next "best" action strategically and a way to foster social accountability to best support social progress and allyship across diverse business contexts. Outside of work, I can be found reading philosophy, playing basketball, cooking or occasionally binging reality TV.

Kathryn and Michelle are joined by Amanda Lee! Amanda is a behavioral science enthusiast who shares advice with our audience on the best ways to independently research the field and the importance of being a continuous learner. This episode includes plenty of advice for individuals curious about applied consumer neuroscience, as well as for those looking to take learnings back to their jobs.

conintuouseducation #appliedconsumerneuroscience #learning

Meet our guest!

Amanda Lee is a behavioral science enthusiast, and former HCD intern, with 5 years of experience working in the market research industry. The majority of her career has been spent in healthcare marketing, both in research and account management. She has a particular passion for CPG and the food and beverage industry, having worked for Wegmans for 7 years in sales and management positions. Amanda has wanted to study and work in marketing for as long as she can remember. This was the result of a longstanding fascination with human behavior and, perhaps, little nudges of inspiration from her aunt, a PhD marketing professor. She discovered her passion for consumer neuroscience during her junior year of college while studying cognitive psychology. With no consumer neuroscience program or professors familiar with the area at her university, she forged her own path by developing her own curriculum.

Amanda remains an avid continuous learner who takes countless online classes, conducts her own research, and reads a wide variety of behavioral science books and publications. Some of her areas of interest include cognitive and evolutionary psychology and research methodologies such as eye tracking, facial EMG, galvanic skin response, and EKG.

This week on HCD’s MindSet, Kathryn and Michelle had on the wonderful and accomplished Arthur Kover Ph.D. He shed light on both his academic and industry experiences as a sociologist and a marketing and advertising researcher.

The value of sociology is interwoven throughout the conversation, as these three chat about how creatives can transform an individual’s perspective on a topic to explore how to get through consumers’ new “body armor.” If you are interested in understanding how researchers must deal with the changes in not only technology but also evolving lifestyles, this episode is for you!

communities #technology #sociology #ads

Meet our guest!

Arthur Kover has spent his working life trying to figure out how people become human and sociable, giving and cruel. He earned a PhD in sociology from Yale. About 20 years of his working life were spent in the advertising business. He was a managing director at Cunningham & Walsh, Inc., moving from advertising research to management. Later in life, he was a professor of marketing at Fordham University. While there, he served as a department head and edited the Journal of Advertising Research. He was also president of the Market Research Council in New York. On retirement, he was appointed a Management Fellow at the Yale School of Management. He continues his search to understand the social meaning of peoplehood. In 2022, he published a book of short personal essays, Collage. The book contains many insights, some jokes, and a number of searching questions. He most recently co-authored an academic book (with Moskowitz and Papajorgji) Applying Mind Genomics to Social Sciences, (IGI Global, 2022). All of this looks quite serious. It is. But I think I am more human than this bio indicates. See if you agree.

🗣️ In this week’s episode of HCD’s MindSet, Kathryn and Michelle chat with social scientist, Kristen Shumaker, about how brains respond to different types of messaging and the types of tools used in communication neuroscience.

⚒️ With experience in using fMRI and fNIRS, Kristin gives us the lowdown about how to explore neurofeedback while accounting for limitations. If you are interested in learning about new neurotechnologies, this informative session is not one you will want to miss!

fNIRS #storytelling #audiences #fMRI

Kristin Shumaker is a quantitative communication researcher, who uses behavioral and neuroscience methods to study how people connect to each other through stories and shared experiences. Specifically, she uses fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) to study how synchrony – between the brains of communicators and within audiences – predicts empathy, authenticity and audience preferences.

She received her Ph.D. from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania in 2022. Prior to re-entering academia, she was a professional production manager and theater maker at the Dell’Arte International School for Physical Theatre, and a freelance stage manager with the Santa Fe Opera and other companies. She has an M.F.A. in Theatre (Virginia Tech) and a B.A. in Biology (Carleton College).

🎃 Happy Halloween to all our MindSet listeners!

🦇 🧙‍♀️🧉 What's a scary part about research? Statistics! The University of Pennsylvania's Alex Shpenev talks Kathryn and Michelle through common fears or misconceptions behind statistics and why you shouldn't be so sure when playing with numbers. Even though this episode doesn't include any spells, it reminds us that many popular statistics are just pulled out of thin air.

In MindSet Episode #56 Michelle and Kathryn discuss the New Reefer Madness with HCD's Senior Scientific Consultant, Martha Bajec, PhD. The New Reefer Madness is an important term used to help describe the rebranding of cannabis from a "No No" to a "Wellness or Health Additive.".

Dr. Martha Bajec has spent the last decade working as a scientist and leader for some of the world’s largest and most influential consumer packaged goods companies. With undergraduate and master’s theses focused on neurotransmission in model organisms and doctoral work on individual differences in human oral sensation, Martha has put the rigor and stringency of her training to work in delivering evidence-based insights on CPG categories ranging from fortified milk-based products through carbonated beverages, and beer and wine through tobacco and cannabis.

As Principal at Bajec Senseworks consulting, Martha lends her unique expertise and perspective to researchers and leaders across CPG categories. Martha joined HCD Research in 2020 as a Consulting Director in Health and Wellness Research exploring the consumer space. In addition to providing full-service support for human testing and product evaluation, Martha’s experience innovating in highly regulated spaces ensures consideration of regulatory and compliance requirements, by design. Also, a special shout out to all of our guests as you make this content even better and a huge thank you to all of our valued listeners!

In this episode, we have a wonderful guest, Dr. Elizabeth Johnson or better known as Zab. Dr. Johnson and Kathryn speak on how the field of applied neuroscience can be used in just about every factor of life but also how most people don't even know what, why or how their own brain works!

Elizabeth (Zab) Johnson is the executive director and senior fellow of the Wharton Neuroscience Initiative. Her research focuses on vision and visual behavior. Her work spans physiological approaches in the retina and early visual cortex to using eye tracking to investigate how human observers look and navigate through the world, how these processes unfold over time and with experience, and the role of social cognition and decision making in these processes. As an expert on color vision, she collaborated with Lenovo to develop computer and tablet screens with features that provide a more personalized color experience and has worked with US military special operations forces and the FBI to improve their visual training and assessments.

Before joining Wharton, Zab was a research professor of neurobiology at Duke University's School of Medicine, where she also launched the Duke Institute of Brain Sciences. She received her PhD in neural science at New York University and an AB in psychobiology from Mount Holyoke College. She is passionate about how neuroscience can impact and improve many aspects of how we make choices, lead organizations, and live our lives. Her research and practice strive to push applications of neuroscience outside of the traditional laboratory, in order to find new solutions for real world challenges that impact both business and society.

Michelle and Kathryn talk with Farrah Kharche who was a finished up her masters with a capstone research project at HCD Research and now works as an Associate at Strategy&. Farrah was very intrigued by brand perception and also a timely topic of vaccines! Listen in to hear a little more about her background, her capstone project, and this curious conversation.

During her undergraduate experience studying consumer behavior, Farrah developed an interest in behavioral science. She pursued this interest by conducting independent research on the impact of communications of transformation on consumer expectations and product satisfaction. Subsequently, Farrah began working as a research assistant in the behavioral research lab at the Fisher College of Business; in this role, she further explored consumer behavior by directing experiments for Marketing professors and analyzing data. Farrah then matriculated at The University of Pennsylvania’s Master of Behavioral and Decision Sciences (MBDS) program in the fall of 2020. During her time at the University of Pennsylvania, Farrah conducted research concerning tax aversion during shopping and devised premiumization and marketing strategies and testing methods for various Fortune 500 CPG firms. After completing her MBDS coursework, Farrah concluded her degree by completing her capstone research project with HCD research on COVID-19 vaccine brand perceptions in the U.S. This topic was of particular interest to her as COVID-19 vaccine brand perceptions translate into vaccination adoption and compliance with health guidelines, thereby informing consumer behavior.

Farrah graduated from The Ohio State University with a BS in Business Administration specializing in Finance and Marketing with a minor in Consumer Sciences. She recently graduated from the MBDS program and will be joining Strategy& as an associate.

This week, Michelle talks with Michael Murphy who was a recent intern at HCD Research. They discuss a little about him and his personal experiences while also diving into the methodologies he learned under Michelle's mentorship. You could call him a master of behavior and decision sciences!

After completing coursework in microeconomics and behavioral economics in the second half of his undergraduate experience, Michael's professional ambitions largely shifted towards the behavioral sciences. He saw this field as an exciting intersection of his interests in health, psychology, and behavior change. Michael's newfound interest prompted him to complete an independent study about the neuroscience underlying health-related decision making, which then encouraged him to explore professional degree programs. Ultimately, Michael enrolled in the Master of Behavioral and Decision Sciences (MBDS) program at the University of Pennsylvania in the Fall of 2020. Throughout the MBDS program, he contributed to multiple projects ranging from pediatric type II diabetes to COVID-19. Michael rounded out his masters degree by completing a capstone project with HCD Research centered on consumer safety priorities at entertainment venues. Michael appreciates the opportunity to have learned about HCD's MaxImplicit methodology under the mentorship of employees Michelle and Kathryn.

Michael received his BS in Neuroscience with a Health Studies Certificate from Dickinson College. He recently completed his coursework in the Master of Behavioral and Decision Sciences program at the University of Pennsylvania.
