Lawmakers demanded answers from Chew during the hearing, seeking clarity on the company's data privacy policies and its relationship with the Chinese government.
The hearing also explored the possibility of TikTok being used as a tool for censorship and propaganda.

More than 600 earthquakes have been located by GeoNet since the start of an earthquake swarm in Kawerau in the early hours of Saturday, March 18.
Of these, eight earthquakes were recorded with a magnitude over 4.0.
While many of the earthquakes were felt in the area, others were only noticeable to GeoNet's seismic monitoring equipment.
The largest earthquake recorded so far has been M4.8, while the majority of earthquakes have been between M2.0 and M2.9.

Last week, Aotearoa saw some horrific videos of a Nelson schoolboy being brutally beaten up by his peers. It was unprovoked, horrific violence.
This week, there has been another case, with Lloyd Burr receiving this email from a mother on Wednesday:
"My 13-year-old daughter was almost killed yesterday by a group of school girls who kicked her repeatedly in her head severely," the email reads.
"So many kids are brutally attacked & bullied on a daily & I feel not much is being done to support these victims & protect them."
The letter finishes by saying: "My daughter may have not come home alive due to this."
Lloyd Burr spoke to the anonymous mother who sent the email, asking if her daughter is okay.

In an update to the case of the late Auckland dairy worker, Janak Patel, two suspects have had their charges upgraded from robbery to murder.
Patel was fatally stabbed while pursuing a man who had allegedly stolen the cash register from Rose Cottage Superette in Sandringham in November 2022.
Patel's murder shocked the Auckland community and sparked widespread outrage.
Initially, Henry Fred and Shane Tane were charged with robbery, but they now face a more-severe charge of murder.
Another individual, Frederick Hobson, has also been named as the first of the men to be accused of murder.
Both Hobson and Fred have pleaded not guilty.
The trio are set to face trial in 2024.

New Zealand's drug buying agency Pharmac has announced it will fund the life-changing cystic fibrosis (CF) drug, Trikafta, starting from April 1, 2023.
The decision to fund the drug has been the result of years of campaigning and advocacy by health experts, patients and their families.
Despite evidence pointing towards the benefits of funding the drug, previous efforts to secure its funding had come to nothing.
However, this announcement marks a significant victory for the advocates and campaigners who have worked tirelessly to make it happen.
In early December 2022 Today FM revealed Pharmac was considering funding the drug, and on Tuesday the decision had been officially confirmed.

It's official - Pharmac will fund the life-changing cystic fibrosis [CF] drug Trikafta from the beginning of April.
Advocates and campaigners have ploughed huge amounts of time and effort into securing this drug and for years it came to nothing, despite evidence showing there was a huge cost-benefit in funding the drug and it drastically improved quality of life.
Today FM first spoke about Pharmac when they were looking to fund the drug in early December. But when Lloyd Burr spoke to Pharmac's CEO Sarah Fitt just over a week later, she cast doubt over whether they would actually make this drug available to people.
"That's entirely possible [we won't fund it]," Fitt told Burr.
"That would be hopefully very unlikely but it's not unheard of for us to issue a proposal for a consultation and us get feedback and then it not go ahead."
So Tuesday's news that the drug will be funded for all people over six years old with cystic fibrosis is particularly welcome in the community.
The CEO of Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand, Lisa Burns, told Lloyd Burr this announcement is a "huge relief" for the community.

As heavy rainfall continues to batter Auckland, locals are being advised to exercise caution when travelling around the region.
Auckland Transport (AT) has said 25 roads are closed due to flooding, with further closures possible as the weather intensifies.
Waitākere has been particularly hard hit, with access to many parts of the area now compromised. AT has requested that people avoid the area altogether, so as not to put additional pressure on the communities affected.
Civil Defence (CD) is urging residents in the northern Coromandel to brace themselves for further flooding. Locla CD controller Garry Towler is warning that it is almost certain to occur, given the region's current saturation levels after being hit by Cyclone Gabrielle.
MetService said torrential rain is expected in various parts of Auckland, Waikato, and the east coast down to Wellington, the weather agency has also warned that the heavy downpours could cause flash flooding in streams, gullies, and urban areas, making driving conditions extremely hazardous.
A Red Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in place for Auckland, north of Orewa and the Coromandel region which runs until midnight Friday.

A petition has been launched following the case of Barbie Duffy, whose advanced care directive was ignored by doctors after she suffered a major stroke in October 2021.
Duffy had made it clear in her directive she did not want care if she suffered a serious loss of mental and physical capacity.
However, doctors kept her alive against her wishes, despite her inability to communicate or care for herself. Duffy needed 24/7 care and was unable to speak, read or write.
When she was able to understand more, she refused food and, in the end, fluids. Barbie Duffy passed away 58 days after her stroke.
Barbie Duffy's daughter, Louise Duffy, has spoken to Lloyd Burr about the situation and launched a petition to ensure no other person has their advanced care directive ignored.

The professional firefighters union have been negotiating with Fire and Emergency for better pay and working conditions for months to no avail.
During that time there have been multiple strikes - and many fire engines are emblazoned with statements about the dilapidated state of the service's fleet.

Remember the outspoken, hilarious couple Rachel and Tyson from season one of TV3's The Block NZ?
Despite not winning any money, they were viewer favourites.
During the show, they introduced their gorgeous wee boy Otis to the nation when he was just a kid.
Otis is now 16, and based on what doctors told him in February, he should be dead by now.
He has Desmoplastic small round cell tumours, or DSRCT, and since his surprise diagnosis nine months ago, he's undergone chemotherapy which has been an overwhelming success.
Dozens of cancerous tumours have shrunk, and become dormant.
Just two tumours are still malignant and they can be removed by specialist surgeons at Waikato Hospital.
The problem is, the surgeons won't.
Their reasoning? The dormant tumours in his chest may one day come back and grow.
They 'might'.
So given the New Zealand health system has shafted Otis, Rachel and Ty are trying to raise $300,000 on give-a-little to get the surgery done in Sydney.
That's how bad our system is. It doesn't even want to try to save Otis' life.

The state of New Zealand's emergency departments has hit a crisis point.
On June 15 at 1am, a 50-year-old woman turned up at Middlemore Hospital's A&E with a severe headache.
She was told the wait time was seven hours, so she went home.
A few hours later she returned in an ambulance having suffered a significant brain haemorrhage and died the next day.
A report into her death reveals there were 195 patients at the emergency department, with 46 people in the waiting room - which was abnormally busy.
But the woman was never triaged - meaning her name wasn't registered nor was she assessed to check her vital signs.
And even though the department was short of nurses that night, the report says even if staffing levels were 100 percent, the excessive demand wouldn't have been met.

The government's war on the supermarket duopoly has ramped up a notch today - in another attempt to bring down the cost of our shopping baskets.
Under the changes, the two major players - Countdown and Foodstuffs - will have to sell products wholesale to competitors at a fair price - or be forced to.

In 2017, it was KiwiBuild the plan to build 100,000 houses over 10 years. They've built 5,000. That's a fail.
Since then, there have been reviews, market studies, funds for Māori housing, funds for infrastructure, funds for affordable housing and state-house rebuilds too.
It's hard to quantify whether these are working but when you look at the figures of those living in emergency housing motels, it doesn't look promising.
So will the latest new housing initiative help those who need it most?
It will see tax breaks given to property developers who build at least 20 dwellings with the sole purpose of long-term leasing them to tenants.
The aim is to give rental tenants some housing security.

A children's charity says hundreds are being abused every month in this country.
The issue is again in the headlines following the murder of five-year-old Malachi Subecz in Te Puna, just out of Tauranga.
Lloyd Burr says he grew up in the small town - a great place to grow up, go to school and play sports.
But in November last year in Te Puna, 27-year-old Michela Barriball murdered Subecz, who was in her care, the son of a friend who'd gone to prison.
Subecz was malnourished and underweight. He'd been verbally and physically abused by Barriball for 5 months.
He suffered multiple blunt-force injuries to his head from Barriball and died 10 days later at Starship Hospital.

"We're looking really closely on a daily basis at how the overall response is tracking.
"We've indicated that we are going to do another review next week, because we are seeing things pointing in the right direction.
"We do have to recognise that there are still a lot of people catching Covid, and there are still a lot of people getting very sick from Covid, and ultimately it's not just about hospitalisations - we actually want to reduce the number of people and minimise the number of people who are getting Covid-19.
"Bearing in mind again, for businesses, the more people who have Covid-19 - that's fewer consumers, so we actually do want to try and get the numbers heading steeply down," says Hipkins.

David Wiley started Vitality Organics back in 2015 in the Bay of Plenty and after five to six years, he started 'Flow State' in Kirikiri with his Canadian wife.
He is the guy that makes and sells mushroom coffee.
"Mushroom coffee can compliment or substitute a coffee. We've got Mushroom extract powders that provide a bit of a bitter and an earthy taste and it pairs beautifully with any type of milk."
"The reports that we get from people on the daily, when we are at Vitality organic, is that the peak of the coffee doesn't come on as quickly, and then that down from the coffee doesn't really affect so it's a little bit of a sustainable buzz, let's say."
