This podcast is about renewing hope, happiness and belief through diving into topics of what is possible in education. We get real and talk candidly about ways educators across the globe are working to uproot the education system and make transformational changes for educators and our students. I want to take away the pain, exhaustion and questioning that too many of us feel day in and day out and reignite the joy and passion all educators had when deciding to enter a career in education. According to the Opportunity Myth (2018), "High Expectations is the highest indicator of potential growth when it.  In fact when students have teachers who hold HE, you can see an average of 4.6 months more of growth per year.

Unfortunately, low expectations for student success were rampant. While 82 percent of teachers were supportive of statelevel standards in theory, just 44 percent of teachers believed their own students could meet such high demands. When that translates into choices about content and instruction—and into the messages those choices send to students—it makes a meaningful impact on students’ school experiences and outcomes.

The system doesn’t send teachers the message that their mindset matters nearly as much as the material they teach or the practices they employ in their classrooms. Yet teacher expectations had a stronger effect on student achievement growth than any other factor we studied."

So let's dig into what High Expectations are and what we as educators can hold our students to these expectations!

Seeing our students positively is a transformative approach that can revolutionize their educational experience.

If we haven't revolutionized their educational experience yet in this school year, this is your chance to do this now.

Here are four things you can do to make this happen at the end of the year and in the episode, I give concrete examples of how to do each one.

  1. Recognize their individuality, Strengths, and Hidden Talents

  2. Focus on their growth

  3. Foster an inclusive environment

  4. Provide them opportunities to engage in and overcome challenges

These are great to do's these last few days as they will help create lasting memories of their time in your class. Remember to embrace the power of positive perception and together let us empower our students to soar to new heights of achievement and self-belief.

As October approaches, for those of us who have been in education, we know their is a steep dip in overall happiness during this month and you have likely heard of the the "Phases of a First Year Teacher".

I was recently a guest on The Teacher Hotline Podcast and shared essentially how I experienced all of the phases, particularly in my first year. For me, the "Disillusionment Phase" actually came pretty quickly. It hit me in my second week of teaching. Not only do I remember that, but it is documented in the journal I kept. However, I can honestly say, these phases were not unique to my first year. I experienced them in all my years of teaching, just to different degrees.

The "Disillusionment Phase" is a dark phase and a real one, however as I have worked on my own self and have coached teachers, I have found ways that we not only can shorten the phase, but turn that black ski slope into a bunny hill.

Take a listen to the this week's episode and find out how to ensure that you and/ or your teachers not only "survive" October but actually "thrive" in one of the most challenging months educators endure.

And be sure to sign up for my "First 10 Days of October Educator Happiness Challenge". In my first, third and fifth years of teaching, I found myself struggling to the point I didn't want to go to work. I had the Sunday blues like nobody's business... until I made a commitment to reset my classroom culture. Each time was a little different and each time was a little better.

You would think that by my fifth year of teaching I wouldn't need a classroom reset... but alas, I did. I was teaching brand new grade levels, and what I thought I knew and wanted to be true, did not come to fruition those first few weeks.

This was not my first classroom culture reset and believe it or not, it was not my last. When I started coaching teachers, I led many through various classroom resets. I supported teachers on the brink of not having their contract renewed to being nominated teacher of the year, who are still in the classroom, now leading schools, classroom, even policy.

I am excited to share these tried and true practices all packaged in a lovely formula.

There is so much to do as an educator. If I had a magic wand, there is so much I would change and take off your plate. But because I don't have a magic wand, then we will just have to settle for my tried and true practices that I have learned and implemented overtime.

One of those practices was in fact simplifying my expectations. This could seem counter intuitive but it works wonders I promise.

Yes a mere two expectations can result in a SAFE and LEARNING classroom! In this week's episode you will learn what those two magic expectations are AND how to implement and uphold them!

I am a keen believer in the power of happiness and I know that there is no true definition of happiness because the source of happiness is ultimately different for everyone.  However, wouldn't it be amazing if education was a source of happiness for ALL students?  What if happiness was at the core of how we approached education?  What if happiness was in fact our first priority?  I would venture to say that more learning would actually happen.

In this week's episode I dive into the history of the American education system and consider what if... what if we approached education differently?

I am truly "happy" to get to share this episode with you!  And, I really hope that if this sparks ANYTHING for you, to reply to this week's episode post, DM me or, email me and let me know what this episode is making you think!

Emily Hoover really is a "people extraordinaire" and we are sooooo lucky to have her as a guest on the next Teacher ReNEWed Podcast! After nearly a decade of teaching, Emily decided to take a sabbatical to study at the University of Cambridge where her research centered on interrogating the ways in which school leadership impacted teacher wellness and self-determination. Building upon this research, Emily created a framework to promote socio-emotional wellness, using self-determination theory as a means to foster a solutions-oriented mindset. Which is the very topic in which this episode digs into. Emily is passionate about developing an evolving understanding of how she can make this world a better place. She is doing just that and I cannot wait for you to hear how you can build your own capacity!

In today's episode guest David Ryan Castro-Harris started Amplify RJ in March 2020 as he was finding that most people he talked to didn't know the term, much less how it applied to their lives. Thinking about how people's attention is often on social media, he decided to start sharing digital content on Instagramwhich is exactly where I found him and KNEW he had to be on the show!

When Covid-19 hit, he started providing interactive learning experiences on Zoom to help people go deeper in the work.

Amplify RJ envisions an equitable world where people use Restorative Justice practices in all relationships to meet the needs of their communities and exists to teach people the origins, philosophy, practices, and values of Restorative Justice by sharing knowledge across digital platforms, providing interactive learning experiences, and connecting people doing the work in various contexts around the world. And while David's reach is wide, he is providing a particular focus on the education system!

If you as an educator or your school are working to embrace and adopt true restorative justice practices into your school, you will want to listen to this episode.

Also, Amplify RJ is gifting Teacher Renewed listeners one FREE spot in his summer intensive. Applications are due, June 14th. Be sure to get yours in!

It is so fun when you get to reconnect with extraordinary people and this episode allowed me to do just that.  And this incredible person is passionate about the leadership of educators, especially teachers.  As the founder and Chief Consultant of TransformED Leaders, Kendra Johnson works to eliminate the lone wolf in schools by developing teachers who:

  • seek leadership opportunities
  • want training & coaching
  • can lead adults & teach
  • will accept creative compensation
  • don’t want to be a principal

If this sounds like you or someone you might know, then this episode is a MUST listen to.  We don't all have to be principals or school administrators to be considered school "leaders".  As teachers we are so much more and there are ways we can ensure that people see this (and even negotiate our pay), but it first starts with us!

In this episode, I share with you four foundational MUST HAVE skills to support novice teachers’ success. And by novice, I mean both brand new teachers and perhaps those who didn’t quite have the first year they had hoped.

I have seen these foundational skills work time and time again and I still use them to this day despite my “seasoned” time in classrooms and in schools. In fact, I come back to these skills when I cover a classroom or even when I am at a birthday party with my boys and I need to keep a large group of young people safe!

Coinciding with this episode is a 30 page Novice to Natural Resource Guide that digs even more deeply into these four foundational skills and comes with concrete ways to implement all.
