General Thomas Jackson's Confederate Brigade arrived at Manassas Junction after the first troop movement by rail from Winchester, Virginia.
July 21st, 1861
The First Battle of Bull Run / The First Battle of Manassas Inexperience soldiers stumbled about the battlefield. Eventually the rebels would win the day and the Union army would retreat back to Washington D.C.

Week 16 of the Civil War
July 22nd, 1861
Federal forces streamed back to Washington, reeling from their loss at Manassas.
This retreat took some men less than a quarter the time their initial march took to Centerville.
Chaos ensued as soldiers became separated from their units and the medical service was wholly unprepared to care for the mass of wounded.
July 25th
The Senate passed the Crittenden Resolution. It stated the North was fighting the war,
“to defend and maintain the supremacy of the Constitution and to preserve the Union.”
The war was not fought to interfere with slavery or subjugate the south.
July 26th
Union Major General George B. McClellan assumed command of the newly formed Army of the Potomac. McClellan’s unashamed self-promotion paid off.
July 28th
The Seventh U.S. Infantry in New Mexico surrendered entirely to confederate forces under Captain John R. Baylor without firing a shot.

Jefferson Davis was the first and only President of the Confederate States of America. But that was not all he did. He had a long distinguished career before the Civil War.
West Point Graduate
Representative in the United States Congress
Raised the Mississippi Rifles and fought in the Mexican-American War
United States Senator
Secretary of War
He was also against secession from the Union.
But he was a man of the South through and through and was the epitome of the planter class. He ran a plantation owned by his brother and owned 113 men and women, using them to advance his career and wealth.

The Union has dissolved. Between the election of Abraham Lincoln and the Battle of Fort Sumter, states in the deep south seceded from the United States.
Afraid of what the newly elected Republican administration would do to their way of life, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas all voted to pass Ordinances of Secession. Representatives of these states would craft a Constitution of the Confederate States of America and elect Jefferson Davis as her President.
In preparation for the coming War both Union and the newly formed Confederated forces began to seize and occupy territory to defend their sides' interests.

To understand why the U.S. Civil War, you need to know what happened before. Political arguments on slavery, trade, taxes, and Federal power raged across every corner of America. These arguments came to a head in November 1860.
The 1860 United States Presidential election was the most divisive election in American history. This election would lead to the southern states breaking from the Union because of who was declared the victor.
Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the USA by the narrowest of margins. He would receive only 39% of the popular vote. He would fail to receive a single vote in 10 southern states. In this video, Brendon explains how Lincoln won and why America went to war.
