In 1810 when Edgar Allan Poe was just a year old, German writer Heinrich von Kleist wrote a Poe-like tale that had all the Poe-type elements but not quite the panache of the American. The first recorded recipe for glass was found in 1845 in the Library at Nineveh, founded by King Ashurbanipal of Assyria around 650 BCE. In 1970 the recipe was put to the test (not including the sheep sacrifice). And it worked. It may be ancient but it's still chemistry. ๐ฎ๐ท๐ฅ๐ธ๐ฅ๐บ๐ฅ

In 1954 "space opera" was a pejorative term applied to the literary genre of sci fi pulp fiction. It was considered low brow writing. But it takes a creative mind to explore a possible space alien future. And good writing makes the exploration fun for all. ๐บ๐ธ๐ฝ๐พ๐ธ๐๐ก

In 1830 a cad named Edward Bulwer-Lytton opened his dreadful novel "Paul Clifford" with the words "It was a dark and stormy night" and to this day the Edward Bulwer-Lytton award for bad writing is awarded to purveyors of purple prose. Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum. If you want peace, prepare for war. Roman wisdom from the year 430, as the Empire was in decline. An influential little book called De Re Militaris was created to encourage a return to Rome's glory days. The book remained popular with leaders until the 17th century. In 1586 Mary Queen of Scots sent a secret letter about a plot against Queen Elizabeth of England, using what she thought was an uncrackable code. Not only was the code cracked, her letter was edited and led to the rounding up of all plotters and Mary's own head being lopped off. Not a smart lady. English artist William Hogarth's paintings were so detailed and clever they could be read like books. The Rake's Progress series of 8 pictures show the ultimate destination of a reckless life - the Bedlam madhouse in London. Just in case anyone was unclear each picture was accompanied by a poem capturing perfectly just how awful that destination was. All of them, rolled into one preposterous fake siren. Patrick Dennis was the author - a nom de plume for a literary genius. Camp culture is broad. It was a little book of everything you could conceivably need to know - about everything. ย It was made to sell soap but it also contained a perfect section for new mums - "Baby's First Year". Things might be different now but for sheer clarity and calmness about how to care for a baby you can't beat the details published in Andrew Pears' Cyclopaedia. Whether you are interested in kids or not the medical practitioner who wrote this deserves a medal. ๐ฃ๐ฉบ๐ฉโ๐ง๐๐ฆ

Tonight's read is Edgar Allan Poe's first published short story "Metzengerstein". It has all the Poe elements that made him so famous. Creeping terror. A perfect bed-time story for Episode 13. How Poe managed to create so much great literature while soaking himself in booze is anyone's guess. But we can all be glad he did.ย ๐ด๐ฅ๐ป

We don't know the authors of these particular legal instruments were but in banning drunkenness their words have echoed across oceans and centuries. A toast, then, to the US 18th Amendment or 'Prohibition' and the Inebriates Act 1912 NSW. Thankfully repealed they are examples of great legal writing. ๐ธ๐ฅ๐ป๐น

In 1831 French Aristocrat, Diplomat and keen student of democracy as a concept, Alexis de Toqueville, went to America. His 2 volume work La Democratique En Amerique was a hit and it's still enjoyed as a classic to this day. But Alexis wasn't above getting snippy about this new companions. Even his snippiness was beautifully written.ย ๐บ๐ธ๐ซ๐ท

In 1942 the US Army published a little handbook for US service personnel stationed in Australia to help them understand the locals 'Down Under'. It's a charming and practical work and just a bit cheeky. You can kind of see where the writers for The Simpsons were coming from.ย ๐ช๐บ๐ธ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐บ

The father of germ theory and epidemiology was an Italian Renaissance doctor who also happened to write the seminal (pardon the pun) poem giving the disease Syphilis its name and origin story. He wasn't just a great doctor he was also a great writer. And it's a great poem.ย ๐ฅด ๐ย
