I have three types of bullying for you today. One is more likely the obvious way we think of bullying, but the other two might be in your blindspot. Here's the question: What's it like to be bullied? Not just by other people that are being mean to you or people who don't like you, but what's it like to be bullied by yourself? How much self-bullying do you do on a regular basis? How about this one: What's it like to feel bullied by someone who's over caring for you; doing things or making decisions for you that you can definitely do, or at least learn to do, on your own? Lastly, how might other people feel bullied by you when things aren't going your way and your control button gets pushed? All things to consider and notice. If you were a bully, I'm sure you'd want to know.
Ever feel like you're a Picasso painting? Here’s the PATTERN I have for you today: CHAOS. How many of you notice a pattern of chaos in your life, in your relationships, at work? Even perhaps your internal experience of chaos, what is your internal experience of life? Let’s looks at a couple of different ways that we actually FEED the CHAOS. I know that might sound weird, but stick with me and try this on for size: What if one of our unconscious conversations was, “I know who I AM when things are chaotic.” If that's the case, I can promise you that you are inadvertently creating chaos in your life. Let's dive in!
We’ve all had the experience of being misunderstood. It’s normal! It’s human! But what if your most frequent and common experience is being misunderstood? Have you ever found yourself in that place? Are you CHRONICALLY MISUNDERSTOOD? If that’s the case, I want to invite you to consider that, perhaps, being misunderstood is a way to get other things that you might want. I know that could sound crazy…
Have you ever wondered if you were performing in a relationship or if you were actually, authentically participating in a relationship? How can you really know? Here are three ways, and I really want you to try them on and see how they fit first before you just say, "No! That's not me." These are a human traits. We all do them, at least sometimes. Be encouraged! Noticing how, when, and where they show up in our lives is the first step to transformation.
Often when there's tension, whether it's physical or relational, we immediately respond to try to alleviate the experience of tension or make it go away. But what if tension was a neon sign? What if it was an indicator for you, both physically and relationally, that lets you know something BIG is at stake, that there's something important to be paying attention to? Maybe the tension is a GREEN LIGHT: Come forward! Look over here! Pay attention! Invest your energy into whatever this tension is pointing to!
If you're not careful, pain can easily become a filter for everything you experience in life. I know, it's easy to meld ourselves together with our pain because, often, it can be very loud and prevalent for sustained periods of time. Let's face it, pain and suffering are major pieces of the human experience. Here's the reminder: YOU ARE NOT YOUR PAIN. In this video, I cover three ways that we use our pain as a filter in life and how we can move past despising our pain and harness it towards the things we most long for in life. DON'T DESPISE THE WOUND!
Let me invite you to get AWWWKWARD; taking what seems like a risk or being misunderstood for the sake of connecting with another human being. Otherwise, how do you get to know new people without having to experience some level of awkwardness or cringiness? Another way to look at it is simply having the freedom to express who you are with the intention of creating something new.
Favorite failure?! It's not something that people would typically prefer to flock to. If you've followed me for any amount of time, you'd know that I'm a HUGE fan of Andrew Huberman's work. This episode, in some ways, is in response to a recent episode from the Huberman Lab podcast. In it he said, "Without error, the brain is not in a position to change itself." So, what if there's resource in picking a favorite failure? Let's explore!
Are you feeling tired? Exhausted? Sapped of your energy? Here's a tried and true discipline to get your energy back that perhaps you haven't thought of yet. If you practice this, I promise you will have so much more energy in your day!
Studies show that around 95% people THINK they're self-aware, but only 5-10% actually are. In our minds, we're definitely a part of that 5-10%, right? But what if we're not? What if we're a part of the 95% of people who think they are, but actually aren't? Self-awareness is one of the most important leadership skills. So, how do we grow our self-awareness?
Are you currently at an impasse in a relationship? An unresolved argument, topic, situation or event? At the end of the day, all of your important relationships will experience breakdown. They have to. Those are the ones you are most invested in! For some relief, let’s look at how to break down a breakdown.
Are you living in a double standard? Probably! It's everywhere. Everyone does it. We all have the tendency to judge things in others that we see, or would prefer not to see, in ourselves. Have you ever heard someone complain about a complainer? What is that!? They are whining about whiners! Is there an antidote? I don't know. But here's my invitation: Are you willing to explore this human condition with me?
Join Vannessa Robinson and myself as we converse about “What else is there?” It’s valuable to ask ourselves in every area of our lives, “What am I not seeing? Who is available that I’m not seeing? Who am I cutting out, intentionally or not?” Whether it’s receiving feedback from someone, taking that big step into a new endeavor or maybe considering what else may be true in any given situation, usually the answer to “What else is there?” requires an amount of risk taking; and we have to risk our being to truly live. Vannessa is an entrepreneur, a creative, a personal trainer, and an excellent baker who makes delicious treats! I think you are going to love what she has to say today about moving through life with hope, perseverance, grit and a sense of fun.
There are a few poker tells that just about everyone knows, but some poker players are so good, that they actually make a living reading other people's actions and behaviors to detect patterns; and these patterns are tells. Now, let's switch hands to something you may NOT know. What are your RELATIONAL tells?
Have you ever been betrayed? Of course you have! Everyone has betrayed or will be betrayed by someone at some point of their lives. It can honestly feel like a dagger to the heart! So, as we seek to heal, I want you to think about your experiences of betrayal. What have they been like? What happened? What didn't happen? Let's take a look!
There's an interesting definition of character, which is: the mark that is left on you by someone else. My character leaves a distinct mark on the people I come into contact with as does yours on the people you come in contact with. So when we talk about character, we're talking about that element of our personhood that communicates our values in a tangible way. It's our values, plus our attitude, plus our actions that come out of them. So what does it look like to develop our character? Here are two of the best places to start.
If you're like me, maybe you've read a lot of fantastic books, watched great Netflix shows, documentaries, done research on different things, had amazing conversations with people; but if you're going to distill it down, who or what would you say has been your greatest teacher in these past 12 months? I know for me, it's two different things: Loss and being around small children. Over the last 6 months, I've lost two really close friends. We also have our two grandchildren living with us right now. Both experiences have proven to be valuable teachers. Here's what they have taught me.
There's been a lot of conversation over the last 10 months or so about Virtue Signalling: attempting to show other people that you are a good person. What's interesting about virtue signalling is that it usually involves presenting oneself in a good light on social media, for example, but then doing something else in private. If you really think about it though, isn't it true that we are also continually virtue signalling to OURSELVES? We are looking to prove, mostly to ourselves, that we are good people.
Our minds are designed to be predictive; it's part of our biology. And with everything that's gone on with the worldwide pandemic and a lot of upheaval in a million different ways, the need for certainty has ratcheted up higher and higher and higher, but is that something that's even available? I want you to mentally put yourself at the end of 2021 and then look back on today. What is going to make it worthwhile for you to use your metabolic energy in a way that produces the kind of person you long to be at the end of 2021? Are they more compassionate or kind? Do they have a deeper sense of their own humanity and the humanity of other people? Are they more willing to hold a conversation with a different belief group?
Work takes up a huge percentage of our lives, so why not be somewhere that brings out the best in you and where you want to bring out the best in the people around you? The FYH podcast features myself, Jean-Marie Jobs, illuminating heroes and their stories of hope with the hope that, as you listen, the hero inside of you gets fed as well. In this episode, we look into the world of interviewing with Amy Maxwell. As a corporate matchmaker, or human whisperer as I like to call her, Amy tells us some interesting stories from her recruiting experience at Kyrus Tech. She shares some tips on conducting a great interview and expresses what she has found to be important when it comes to finding purpose at work. Are you tired of being a perfectionist? In this podcast, I share my thoughts on how to notice where perfectionism exists in our lives and how there's a big difference between the act of being perfect, which is impossible for us as humans beings, versus living from a place of true excellence. What would life look like if perfectionism and true excellence were parsed apart? We end the podcast together with a guided meditation. HOPE really only exists in the jump. The second you land, it's gone and there's a new HOPE coming. But it's only in the middle of the jump, the messiness, the fear of "is this going to turn out" that HOPE lives. As humans, we avoid these moments like the plague, but these are THE moments that are going to get us where we most long to be.
