Shadow of a Mercenary, is a dramatic true docu-story that chronicles the life of Verlin Siefkes: an adopted Kansas farm kid who built a successful crop dusting business and an ex-Marine, who got squeezed by crooked bankers during the late 70s-80s during the Farm-Aid & War on Drugs era.Unfortunately, a greedy financial institution officers push Verlin to the brink, so he finally agreed to use his flying skills to transport a shipment of Quaaludes for a friend, to help feed his family and keep his crop-dusting business alive. Verlin wasn’t aware his employer was being watched by the FEDs and on a rainy night in Georgia his plane is brought down in a cornfield. Verlin was given two choices; stay in jail with a young daughter at home or become a drug-running double-agent spy for the U.S. government.In 1988, Verlin was kidnapped for 28 days by Escobar's Medellin cartel, because of several internal DEA mistakes. EPISODE 20: The Sheet Has Breaking News…
John Sawyer, of the Post-Dispatch, investigates Verlin’s story which prompts a call from the FBI. How is Verlin’s sister Jan, through all of this and what an odd robbery @Verlin’s property years later in which all of his documents were taken. Verlin work to rebuild his relationship with Christy and then The Sheet calls and wants Verlin to ‘play the game’ with the Callie Cartel. But first, ole’ Tony Price tries to set Verlin up but he smells it out a mile away. Verlin goes down to Cartagena to try and gather info on the Callie Cartel and money laundering on Brickle Ave. Patricia gets a call, they’re on the way to kill Verlin, and she saves his life, again!

EPISODE 17: Escobar Captivity & Caymans!
Verlin sits at the Cartel ranch house in Escobar captivity and warns Co-Pilot, Stockwell, to be careful to answer their questions consistently. Meanwhile island informant, Lil Red, contacts Patricia about Verlin’s situation. Patricia calls all of the Cartel wives and rails on them that Verlin did not steal their product. Patricia calls Pulley @the DEA but the FEDS are useless. Verlin and Glenn enjoy their guards Ramon & Osee and they even have a BBQ w/Escobar present. The FEDS tell Christy her father is probably dead while Verlin swims in a Cayman alligator infested pond to sink recorded government tapes from his duffle bag.

EPISODE 21: Divorcing a Cast of Characters
Time to wind down this cast of characters but first ensure we understand how the money laundering worked in Miami, on Brickle Ave. Velrin’s passport status is now clear and we say goodbye to, The Sheet - Peterson –Andrews & Mr. RedNose, John Pulley. Verlin chats about the final years with Glenn Stockwell, Carl London and his wife Madge as well as the official end of his trusted Panther Navajo plane. Patricia is in Wichita with Verlin but refuses to take her meds. Verlin’s Mother passes in ’92, MaryAnn has remarried and the Alabama attorney who needed more money to continue with the suit against the Federal Government for Verlin, DISAPPEARS!

EPISODE 22: Funneling the Shadow to Sonya
‘Still crazy after all these years.’ Yes, Verlin still has his ‘Double-Agent Mercenary Life’ Little Black Book. Verlin talks about never fearing for his life, really, and we all marvel at the amazing fact that virtually everyone from his family and hometown still refuse to acknowledge or believe that any of this…really happened. Now we meet the woman in Velrin’s life today, Sonya, and how they evolved into the Funnel Cake business. Present day reality his son Eric w/Kathleen. And finally, the best/worst decision of his life…as well as the regrets.

EPISODE 18: The Final Gringo BBQ
In captivity, Stockwell gets progressively more sick and despite daily boredom Verlin stays frosty if they try to kill him. Verlin almost escapes on horseback but returns to stay with Stockwell. Patricia continues to warn the Cartel wives the problems they’ll face if they harm Verlin. NO the FEDS really do nothing to assist Verlin. Finall the Cartel agrees to let them go. Stockwell goes first, and Roberto is taking Verlin, accidentally, to a death BBQ a day before his departure but Verlin gets Roberto drunk to avoid it. Verlin uses his skill set to get through the airport & back home. A FED debrief, indictment status, Judy steals from him and the Heflin meeting all ensues.

EPISODE 19: Panther Poached in Vegas
Verlin’s supposed friend Max, during his captivity, sells the AG-Cat, steals the other equipment and uses his buddy Brock to file false docs to eventually steal the Navajo plane. Verlin briefly speaks to MaryAnn, then meets Christy & introduces Patricia. Verlin marries Patricia in Vegas. The U.S. Attorney informs Verlin the FEDS could get his plane back but they refuse. Verline delivers his tapes to St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pulley gives jobs to Stockwell, but Verlin has to save Stockwell’s life because he just didn’t know what he was doing.

EPISODE 16: Kidnapped In My Dreams
Just when you think it is safe to go to sleep Verlin wakes from one of his signature premonition dreams, which keeps him from taking a job, and a few days later he’s proven right. He’s now in Miami a lot and having an on-going engagement with Patricia. Verlin heads out on Run#4 w/Stockwell as his co-pilot and all goes horribly wrong and the shipment is lost. Concerned for his future, Patricia uses her D.C. contacts to set a meeting with Senator Heflin. Verlin and Glenn take off on Run#5 to make-up for the lost shipment and are kidnapped by Escobar’s cartel on the tarmac with two dozen AK-47’s at their head. That’s a bad day!

EPISODE 15: Customs Jealousy Goes Bust
Verlin’s first bust was the largest in Puerto Rican history at the time and creates even more inter-agency Customs/D.E.A. jealousy. Peterson warns Verlin to beware of Pulley ‘back-dooring’ him on details ‘n specifics. Verlin feels good about the street justice he is involved, while crop-dusting, and making money. He goes back to Dothan, customs screws up and tags his plane as illegal, the FEDS have to resolve the issue quickly and Verlin visits Max in a Wichita bar to discuss the state of his loan and then meets, the little blonde, Judy Popiel.

EPISODE 11: Patch-Ing Up Probation!
Verlin starts seeking out regular crop-dusting jobs for eating money while being on probation. A friend Vern recommends he go down to meet a guy named, Patch Price, whose no-good son Tony, eventually introduces Verlin to a grenade carrying idiot, named Alex Malagon. All the while, Kenny Peterson (D.E.A.) who will become not only a friend but the main point of contact in his future double-agent endeavors, has instructed and met with Verlin on how to ‘get in the game’ of smuggling. Verlin also attempts to engage his son, Eric.

EPISODE 13: Meet the D.E.A. for 250K
Now Verlin finds himself in the good graces of the FEDS as Peterson is quite thrilled that Verlin has some crop-dusting contracts, is set up in Dothan, AL with the perfect cover story to be a mercenary double-agent. Now it comes time for Verlin to meet the FED family: Andrews, Murphy, Pulley et al, while the Colombians surprise visit Verlin in Dothan to check his cover story. Alex ‘n Tony plan a drug run which becomes a complete bust Verlin is “in” and now it’s time to begin playing the real game of expunging his federal field indictments.

EPISODE 12: Loaning Max Trouble…
In an attempt to begin rebuilding his life as a businessman and crop-duster, Verlin heads back home to ask for help. Amazingly, know of his church-going extended family would offer any assistance, so Verlin is left with no choice but to ask former charter client, Max Nichols for a loan. Verlin buys an AG-Cat plane for dusting and stores it at Wheelis Field where he meets Glenn Stockwell. Conversely Alex and Tony ask Verlin to help fly a piece of crap plane which leads to Verlin meeting upper-class Tito and the purchase of the 250K Navajo cesna.

EPISODE 14: The Kansas Panther Takes Flight
Over the course of just 30-days Verlin gets smuggling level modifications made to the Navajo, while still playing father to Christy, having Colombian cartel set-up meetings at the iHop with agents undercover all around him taking pictures, recording devices on lamps and the whole nine yards. Ex-Army Ranger buddy, Jim Squires is his co-pilot on Run#2, which leads to a monster bust in the Everglades. Agency egos lead Verlin down to do a 3rd run in the Bahamas, for Pulley, which leads to another bust and meeting Patricia Boling.

EPISODE 10: The D.E.A. Deals a Divorce!
Jail day arrives and Verlin heads off to a minimum security facility in Tallahassee, FL. Only a few months into prison life, top Atlanta D.E.A. official Diechert shows up to talk with Verlin about becoming an undercover agent to clear his record post jail and a 2-year probation. The entire 14 months that Verlin is in prison neither his daughter, nor ex-wife, bother to visit him. And sadly, by the end of his 14-month stint, Kathleen has moved on to another man and files for divorce. Verlin is released from prison, does some highway construction work and then finally gets back into a plane to fly smoke patrol – to get his license back – and begin a new life!

EPISODE 9: Bonded Baby In Jail!
Verlin gets released from jail on Bond thanks to Cross Sr. while he awaits the trial and sentencing. Despite knowing he’s being watched back in Lake Lanier he plots a way to leave the country. Verlin arrives at his trial and is slapped with a 10-year sentence. Damn. However, only minutes after walking out of the courtroom he phones pal, Don Martin, to set up some quick runs for cash to fund his escape. But as per typical with these idiots surrounding drug runs, nothing works out and just a few months before he goes to jail for 14 months, Kathleen gives birth to their son, Eric.

EPISODE 5:
The crooked crew at Production Credit truly begins to wreak havoc on Verlin’s life, marriage the vision he’d had from himself as a kid. While his wife, Mary Ann, seeks to have them attend marriage counseling, Verlin is trying to figure out how he can right the ship. He begins a research project figuring the best thing he can do is get his instrument rating as a pilot to open more doors for income. However, this fateful logical decision becomes the decision of his life when he chooses to go get that training and rating in Panama City Beach, FL, instead of the more geographical friendly, Dallas.

There is no way to truly describe the character who was, Carl London, but it goes without saying that when Verlin chose to go to Panama City Beach and get his instrument rated pilot’s license everything changed when he walked into Sowell Aviation and met the former WWII C-130 pilot. Mix into that the hell that was becoming his business, his divorce, his daughter, the late 70s and a potential third wife on the horizon. Phew, you’re gonna need a colorful Venn diagram to keep up with all of this fun.

While in the Marines Verlin meets his eventual second wife, Mary Ann, and the vision of his life begins to come into focus. Enjoy understand how a kid with no flying experience in a matter of a couple years has a crop-dusting business, three planes and a sparkling new daughter, Christy. However, while that all sounds great it means you also have to deal with the rigors of ‘real life’ and all of the good and the bad that comes with owning your own business. Suddenly, his wife decides she wants to quit her job, and start working with Verlin. What could possibly go wrong?

At this point Verlin’s life had both flourished into another marriage but untenable in terms of business. When the Production Credit boys push Verlin to the limit he truly finds himself in a NO WIN situation. So after constant pressure from his crazy friend and smuggler, Carl London, Verlin makes the decision to go against his purity hero John Wayne, and goes to meet one idiot Hillbilly, Bill Cross Sr. Cross Sr., along with his idiot son, Jr. are looking for a pilot to use and Verlin becomes the victim. Despite the best laid plans of getting ‘in ‘n out’, Verlin is dancing with tainted goods without knowing it.

As Verlin has said many times about others engaging him there is a great deal of truth in this; You poke the bull too often – you get the horns. Well, unfortunately that table gets turned on Verlin in this pivotal episode. But much like being betrayed about adoption, being betrayed by his extended family and being betrayed by the financial institutions surrounding him – he got the ultimate betrayal. The next thing Verlin knew – was he was flying in a thunderstorm surrounded by federal agents.

Verlin shows how you can have the American dream by working hard and becoming an expert in his field but ya know, then there is thing called, family. How does that show itself when you’re really the ‘adopted’ outcast and you try working with your irresponsible brother as we get into the mid-70s, you lose your Father figure and no one will assist. Mix in a few colorful crop-dusting friends, a new charter client (the devil incarnate) and insert crooked bankers and oh my the wheels can come off quickly.

EPISODE 2:
To know where you are you have to start at the beginning. Just a simple Kansas farm kid from a really small town who grew up under the cloud of unknowingly being adopted until a punk kid spills the beans to him at 7-years old. Verlin’s childhood got even more complicated when suddenly two natural born siblings appeared in the house. We set the stage of life with Robert ‘n Jan, his high school years, how he found his love of speed, joining the Marines and his first marriage…well, sort of, his first.
