Girl Power Hour Host and Author, Toshia Humphries, recently released a new book, The Sky Was All Purple: A Collection of Love for Prince. This book contains stories of love and gratitude shared by contributors, worldwide, and a raw reflection vulnerably shared by the author, herself.
One contributor, Lawrence Bowman, shared a unique account which seemingly provides the greatly needed comic relief in the book. His story and memories of Prince will be shared on the show - a first-time at-length interaction between author and contributor.
Lawrence Bowman is a native New Yorker, husband and father of two who now calls New Jersey home. He is a graduate of SUNY Old Westbury and received his Masters in Early Childhood Education from Fordham University. Currently he teaches English Language Arts as a 3rd grade teacher in New York City. Lawrence has worked in media for both Sports Illustrated Magazine and the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). He has also worked for the Henry Street Settlement as an Education Specialist and as an after-school program coordinator for Safe Space, a non-profit organization located in Manhattan. He is an avid reader, writer/culture critic who also enjoys coaching youth baseball. His true passion has been and will always be music. In his spare time he likes to write, play and study the art of music.

The New Year brings endings and new beginnings. With it, many make resolutions for superficial changes. But, this year, we are called to awaken our true selves and rise to the call of our soul mission which is found thriving in the New Year. This year, we must make absolutions and forgive ourselves and those whose moments and memories hold us in the past.
We must release that which no longer serves us and restore ourselves to the Divine self which entered this Earthly plane as a superbeing and, therefore, possesses super powers. This year, we must relinquish the weight of negative energy that resides in guilt and shame, embrace our shadow selves and forgive our oppressors, abusers and those who seek to harm us; even and especially if one of those is ourselves.
This year, we must cut the cords of these weights and release them so we may rise and stand strong, together, in the New Year.
As such, prayers and ceremonies unlike those the vast majority of the Western world has known are to be employed. As your host, I will be speaking prayers and sharing ceremonies for this very purpose; so that you might take part in the release and welcome the endings and new beginnings of the New Year.

Kelly Daniels--photographer, activist and Standing Rock advocate--has returned home from Standing Rock, but she (like many of us) is aware this war is not over. She returns to Girl Power Hour to discuss the current state of affairs at Standing Rock. One Sacred Fire has been extinguished, but another has been lit. This is not over. However, there has been a great deal of confusion. It seems tribal leaders are expressing different opinions of how to move forward. INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES
The anthology series featured stories of mystery, terror and suspense, and its tongue-in-cheek introductions were in sharp contrast to shows like Suspense and The Whistler. The early 1940s programs opened with Raymond Edward Johnson introducing himself as, "Your host, Raymond," in a mocking sardonic voice. A spooky melodramatic organ score (played by Lew White) punctuated Raymond's many morbid jokes and playful puns. Raymond's closing was an elongated "Pleasant dreeeeaams, hmmmmm?"
The Creaking Door: The program's familiar and famed audio trademark was the eerie creaking door which opened and closed the broadcasts. Himan Brown got the idea from a door in the basement that "squeaked like Hell." The door sound was actually made by a rusty desk chair. The program did originally intend to use a door, but on its first use, the door did not creak. Undaunted, Brown grabbed a nearby chair, sat in it and turned, causing a hair-raising squeak. The chair was used from then on as the sound prop. On at least one memorable occasion, a staffer innocently repaired and oiled the chair, thus forcing the sound man to mimic the squeak orally.

I started yoga in college – a class here and there, nothing steady but every time I went a true connection – to myself, to my energy, to others around me. I took note. And I moved on to a “real” career. I followed what was logical and what I was good at which was numbers. I helped people plan the safety of retirement as a Certified Financial Planner®. Security was important to my clients, as was the feeling of empowerment they got by making decisions about their future. I, however, was not feeling quite so empowered. I lacked fulfillment and I felt like I could make a real impact in others lives outside of helping them track their hard-earned dollars.
I also knew from my now solid and steady yoga practice that happiness was a choice, which meant suffering was a choice as well. Hhhmmm – which to choose, which to choose? I did the unusual, I chose happiness. For me that meant choosing a life-career in yoga. As it turns out, I made the right choice.
My goal for you is to help you use your yoga practice to make the right choices. To feel grounded and nurtured in your practice and your life, and to expand physically and mentally. Everyone goes through difficult times. It's not always easy to find our sparkle when the darkness closes in. But, if we gently remind ourselves to shine regardless, we can bring light to our lives every single day. When we wake up in the morning, we must find positive words to say to ourselves--uplifting messages for the little boy or girl inside us. We need to let ourselves know it's okay to struggle. In fact, it's part of this human experience. But, through our pain, we can fan the flame of hope with self-love and a fresh perspective. That small effort keeps us from becoming stuck in our struggle, victimizing ourselves and sabotaging our own growth and success. Using these daily affirmations is a step--one of many--to easily take every day. Whether during meditation or while stuck in morning traffic, we can read and repeat these affirmations in an effort to improve our attitude and shift our outlook on the day, our current situation or circumstances and our lives in general. Filling each day with a little sparkle helps fuel the light within. That helps us shine despite the effort of darkness to dim and douse us out. Of course, there is no magic cure for pain, regardless of the level of suffering. Patience through the process of healing is truly all we can ask of ourselves and others.
