Legions of rock guitarists on every continent testify that the biggest bang of all was the first time they heard “Rumble” by Link Wray (1929-2005), a dangerous slab of reverberating power chords and raw distortion laid down in 1958.

In the summer of “Purple People Eater,” “Witch Doctor” and “Patricia,” the rebellious sonic onslaught of “Rumble” cut through Top 40 radio like a steamroller. This was more than a decade before power chords even had a name; a decade after that, in the heat of the punk era, Wray’s collaboration with Robert Gordon left every retro-rockabilly guitarslinger in the dust.

The impact of Link Wray, one of Rolling Stone’s "Top 100 Guitarists of All Time," can be heard in generations of American and British metal, punk, grunge, thrash and psychobilly rockers, all of whom have claimed him and “Rumble” (and follow-ups “Raw-Hide” and “Jack The Ripper”) as their own. Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Springsteen head the A-list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees who bow to Link Wray’s abiding influence. Pete Townshend simply calls him the King: “If it hadn’t been for Link Wray and ‘Rumble,’ I would never have picked up a guitar.” Even Iggy Pop is an acolyte: “I left school emotionally after hearing ‘Rumble.’”

The DIY recordings that North Carolina Native American Link Wray made on his three-track machine in the family’s converted chicken coop are the holiest of six-string grails. “The major modus operandi of modern rock guitarists,” wrote Cob Koda, “the blueprints for heavy metal, thrash, you name it… if Duane Eddy twanged away for white, teenage America, Link Wray played for juvenile delinquent hoods, plain and simple.” The “Rumble” goes on forever.

Link Wray Revisited

Link Wray was noted for pioneering a new sound for electric guitars, as exemplified in his hit 1958 instrumental "Rumble", by Link Wray and his Ray Men, which pioneered an overdriven, distorted electric guitar sound. He also "invented the power chord!

The menacing sound of "Rumble" led to a ban on several radio stations, a rare feat for a song with no lyrics, on the grounds that it glorified juvenile delinquency. Nevertheless it became a huge hit, not only in the United States, but also Great Britain, where it has been cited as an influence on The Kinks, The Who, and Jimmy Page among other.

Pete Townsend states: "He is the king; if it hadn't been for Link Wray and 'Rumble,' I would have never picked up a guitar."

In 2003, Link Wray was ranked at number sixty-seven in Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time.

In surfing, the best rides sometimes come from the waves you didn't think you could catch.

While nothing in surfing is particularly easy, being in position when a wave breaks does make catching it that much easier.
Being just out of position, having to paddle to catch as wave as it breaks and dropping down the face of the wave is known as a late drop.

More often than not, you will either not catch the wave to make the late drop or will wipe out in the attempt. When a user surfs to your website, you may choose to send him elsewhere. This is called a "redirect" and is a standard tool to direct traffic.

For instance, if you surf to the misspelled domain "gogle.com," you will be redirected to Alta Vista. If you have a bad surfing redirect on your website, though, you may be driving traffic away from the page you want users to view. Fixing a surfing redirect is simple, however, since it is controlled by only one line in your website code.

The Dynotones - The Surfaders

The DYNOTONES (left), hailing from Orange County, California, are a four piece instrumental surf/hot rod combo consisting of:

Dano Nichols (guitar), Dan Moses (guitar), Rob Kruse (bass Guitar), and Tim Fitzpatrick (drums). Influences of the band include: The Lively Ones, Link Wray, The Astronauts, The Bobby Fuller Four, The Pyramids, and The Ventures. The DYNOTONES have been playing their brand of instrumental rock-n-roll since the spring of 1995.

Playing small clubs to outdoor events, The DYNOTONES have perfected the nostalgic sounds of the past and developed a style that has earned them a place among todays most successful instrumental groups, as well as complementing those of the past.

The Surfaders (right) are probably the most unlikely, but therefore also one of the most exciting instrumental surf outfits of the Netherlands. It all started when drummer Evert advertised for a gitarist and bassplayer to form an old-school punk-garage band. Jonas was the only gitarist brave and hip enough to respond. Within minutes Evert and Jonas discovered their mutual love of instrumental surf music and started experimenting in the backroom of a local musicstore, after closing time. Gaston, who was really looking for an exciting alternative rock band with interests in world-music, joined them on bass, which worked so well that soon Holland was one surf-power-trio richer.

The first public Surfaders gig was at the legendary Maloe Melo venue in Amsterdam, and soon groovy underground festivals such as BUT-Film, MadNes, Car-Art and the first Hot-Rod Surf Weekend were booking The Surfaders to embellish parties with their special mix of classic surf melody, punk energy, and cinematic atmospherics. Working hard on composing tracks for their first album, The Surfaders decided to recruit an extra guitarist to expand their musical horizon even further. And with Stef, who was really looking for e new heavy rock 'n' roll or metal band, they foud the perfect partner in crime to complete the tracks. Having played with bands such as Mullet Monster Mafia from Brazil and The Surfing Henchmen from Denmark, The Surfaders were proud to play the 2011 edition of the North Sea Surf Festival, opening for bands such as Phantom Four and The Razorblades

In January 2012 they Surfaders were so hot that they needed only two weekends at the famous IJland studio in Amsterdam to record all 13 tracks of their first album: Dragstrip Murder Mystery.

Beach Boys Smile Part 1

The genesis of Smile lay during the recording of Pet Sounds. On February 17, 1966, during the sessions for Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson started work on a new single, "Good Vibrations", the most expensive — reputed to have cost more than $50,000 — and complex pop recording of the time. "Good Vibrations" was created by an unprecedented recording technique: nearly 30 minutes of seemingly unrelated musical sections were recorded, then spliced together and reduced into a three-minute pop song. Many within the Beach Boys' camp were skeptical, but the song quickly became the band's biggest hit yet, which went to #1 in both Britain and the USA. Smile was intended to be an entire album produced in the same fashion.

In an October 1966 interview, Brian Wilson quipped that the Beach Boys' next project was "a teenage symphony to God". His plan was to take his work on Pet Sounds to a new level, with an album-length suite of specially-written songs which were both thematically and musically linked, and would be recorded using the unusual sounds and innovative production techniques which had made their recent hit "Good Vibrations" so successful.

The Beach Boys' Christmas Album released on November 16, 1964

Containing five original songs and seven standards, the album proved to be a long-running success during subsequent Christmas seasons, initially reaching #6 in the US Christmas album chart and eventually going gold.

Of the original songs, "Little Saint Nick" was already famous, having been a hit single the year before. "The Man with All the Toys" was another hit during Christmastime 1964 and "Christmas Day" is noteworthy for being the first Beach Boys song to feature a lead vocal from Al Jardine.

While leader Brian Wilson produced and arranged the "rock" songs, he left it to Dick Reynolds (an arranger of The Four Freshmen, a group Wilson idolized) to arrange the orchestral backings on the traditional songs to which The Beach Boys would apply their vocals. The album was released in both mono and stereo; the stereo mix, prepared by engineer Chuck Britz, would be the last true stereo mix for a Beach Boys album until 1968's Friends.

The Beach Boys' Christmas Album peaked at number 6 on Billboard magazine's special, year-end, weekly Christmas Albums sales chart during a 13-week chart stay spread out from 1964 to 1968.

Reissues

The Beach Boys' Christmas Album was first issued on CD in 1988 (CDP 7 91008-2), with the single mix of "Little Saint Nick" (in mono and with overdubbed sleigh bells) replacing the stereo LP version as the first track. All twelve tracks are in mono.
It was reissued on CD in 1990 by Toshiba EMI Japan (TOCP-5945), with all twelve original tracks in stereo, plus the single mono version of "Little Saint Nick" and its B-side "The Lord's Prayer" (mono version) added as bonus tracks.
It was again reissued on CD in 1991 (CDP 7 95084-2), with the stereo "Little Saint Nick" reinstated as the leadoff track and four bonus tracks added: the single version of "Little Saint Nick", its B-side "The Lord's Prayer" (this time in stereo), and alternate takes of "Little Saint Nick" (utilizing the melody from the group's song "Drive-In") and "Auld Lang Syne" (without Denis' message overdubbed). "The Man With All The Toys", "Santa's Beard", "Merry Christmas, Baby" and "Christmas Day" are in mono, while other eight tracks from the original sequence are in stereo.
1998 saw the release of Ultimate Christmas, a new CD compilation containing all of the twelve tracks from the original LP (in stereo), all of the bonus tracks from the previous CD except for "The Lord's Prayer", and 11 additional tracks including the 1974 single "Child of Winter" and several previously-unreleased tracks from an aborted 1977 Christmas album.
Christmas with the Beach Boys, issued in 2004, is essentially a reissue of Ultimate Christmas with a new title and cover art and one song ("Christmas Time Is Here Again") deleted from the tracklist. Like Ultimate Christmas, it omits "The Lord's Prayer" from the "Little Saint Nick" single.
Christmas Harmonies, a 2009 compilation, includes 11 of the 12 tracks from the original LP (including the single mix of "Little Saint Nick" and rare mono mixes of the other Wilson/Love compositions), as well as the alternate take of "Auld Lang Syne", the "Child of Winter" single, and two of the 1977 tracks.

The Venice Beach Muscle Club

In their attempt to capture sounds similar to the surf classics of the 60's the VBMC recorded the majority of the album live and decided to keep modern production techniques to a minimum.

Although the members all enjoy many different styles of music, they found it refreshing to get away from complexity and were excited to keep it limited to four people and their instruments.

Drawn to the surf style through common elements found in music from 60's garage and vintage rock 'n roll, to lounge, jazz, flamenco, and punk, this instrumental surf rock group formed in early 2005.

Their desire was to draw on all of the above influences and fuse them together in the surf genre.
Their diverse tastes have created an eclectic mix of songs that retain a vintage surf sound.

What Is Surf Music?

Surf music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture, particularly Orange County and other areas of Southern California. It was particularly popular between 1961 and 1965, has subsequently been revived and was highly influential on subsequent rock music. It has two major forms: largely instrumental surf rock, with an electric guitar or saxophone playing the main melody, pioneered by acts such as Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, and vocal surf pop, including both surf ballads and dance music, often with strong harmonies that are most associated with The Beach Boys.

Transition artists such as Chuck Berry, Duane Eddy and the inventive oldtimer, Les Paul, had long been experimenting with tremolos, echolettes and other such techno music toys, but these gimmicks were usually utlized for the odd temporary effect. Not until Dale began promoting himself as a surf guitarist and calling such sustained electro riffs ‘surf music,’ was this pecular sound given a popular or proper generic name.

Somewhere along the line, surf music ceased to have anything to do with actual surfing and migrated to kitsch. But although shuddering tremolo bars fit the image of a guy in floral print trunks, the music is mostly instrumental and as such essentially abstract, so you can make it mean anything you want it to. Even early surf rockers like the Ventures and the Tornados realized this and began to incorporate the astronautical, lounge, and kitsch elements that color most efforts in the genre these days. So the term “surf” as it relates to music today basically just refers to music with lots of reverb and crazy guitar playing…”

The Ultra rare Space-Age Rock & Roll crossover release by one of the premier arrangers in the business featurs an early voltage-controlled analog synth and obviously a theremin in all sonic corners of this rolling capsule.

A lot of novelty rock 45's with space themes were released during this era but very few full-length albums and this one is undoubtedly the best of them all.

Fred Lincoln "Link" Wray Jr (May 2, 1929 – November 5, 2005)

Link Wray was noted for pioneering a new sound for electric guitars, as exemplified in his hit 1958 instrumental "Rumble", by Link Wray and his Ray Men, which pioneered an overdriven, distorted electric guitar sound. He also "invented the power chord!

The menacing sound of "Rumble" led to a ban on several radio stations, a rare feat for a song with no lyrics, on the grounds that it glorified juvenile delinquency. Nevertheless it became a huge hit, not only in the United States, but also Great Britain, where it has been cited as an influence on The Kinks, The Who, and Jimmy Page among other.

Pete Townsend states: "He is the king; if it hadn't been for Link Wray and 'Rumble,' I would have never picked up a guitar."

In 2003, Link Wray was ranked at number sixty-seven in Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time.

The Spotnics from Sweden

The Spotnicks were formed in Göteborg, Sweden, in 1957, by guitarist and undisputed bandleader Bo Winberg. The other members were guitarist and singer Bob Lander, drummer Ove Johansson, and bassist Björn Thelin

The first year they performed under the name the Frazers, but soon changed it to the Spotnicks. In 1961 they were signed by Karusell and released their first singles containing mostly instrumental covers of famous songs.

The selection of songs was as varied as the performances were homogenous, including titles like "Hava Nagila" and "Johnny Guitar." Later the same year, the Spotnicks toured Germany, France, and Spain, and in 1962 they released their debut album "The Spotnicks in London", recorded on their first trip to England.

Featured on this tour w ere the space suits that the band would wear on-stage until 1969. It's probably thanks to those silly astronaut costumes, that in the '60s the Spotnicks were one of the most successful instrumental rock groups, alongside the Shadows and the Ventures.

Their very specific sound had more in common with the Shadows. It originated from their first primitive demo recordings, butthe record company liked it and it was promoted as a space sound.

Already in the late '60s it was outdated, but that didn't stop the group from having big successes throughout the decade. In the '70s the sound was definitely antiquated, but like the Ventures, the Spotnicks found reliable audiences in Japan and Germany, as well as a cult and nostalgia following around the world.
The Spotnicks have sold over 20 million albums, making them among the most successful Swedish groups ever, surpassed perhaps only by ABBA and Roxette.

By the late '90s they had released 39 studio albums, recorded roughly 700 songs, and had more than 100 members in the different constellations of the band.

The Farfisas formed in early 2011 on Long Island, NY by Frankie who was at that time performing with a rockabilly band named ‘Hey Hey, Why Why?’ and living out of a Winnebago. He ran in to Freddie who worked at a local bait and tackle shop. The two hit it off and decided to form their own band.

After seeing Fredo and Philip performing as the duo ‘Rude Dude’, Frankie coaxed them to join what would eventually become the Farfisas. Everyone took the surname ‘Farfisas’ as a tip of the hat to The Ramones.

Without any record company support, the band booked all their own shows along the south shore. They quickly grew a following of hair stylists and several used car dealers who were in between jobs.

Their debut CD ‘Surf, Far – Surf Good’ is available on iTunes and other popular non brick and mortar locations.

The Razorblades from Germany

It’s the year 2002…Surfmusic is not exactly the fashion of the day. Some nostalgic guys in Hawaiian shirts still play it, but most people think it’s this weirdo thing that was invented by the Beach Boys or Quentin Tarantino.
Besides that, they couldn’t care less…It’s the new millennium, times are rough and they have to listen to this ultra-cool loungey electro groove track immediately….

Some young guys think that’s not OK at all. Faraway from the sun, the ocean and the beach, in Wiesbaden/Germany, they decide to add their own chapter to the book that was written by Dick Dale and his fellows. By putting twangy guitars, punk power and melodies as big in the ocean in the shaker, they create a musical cocktail that makes you move your feet in double speed and dance like a madman. Six months later their first album is in the can and THE RAZORBLADES start touring.

Fast forward to 2011… THE RAZORBLADES are one of Europe’s leading surf bands, played nearly 300 shows in ten countries, released three albums and one EP, added tracks to numerous compilations and have absolutely no plans to retire. Instead they release their forth full length album “Gimme Some Noise”, which shows the band running like a well-oiled diesel engine.

Rob Razorblade (guitar), Ray Razorblade (bass) and Regi Razorblade (drums) travelled a lot in the last few years. They slept on countless living room floors, rocked together with bands like The Peacocks, Loaded, Los Straitjackets and the Turbo Acs and forgot the blinders of the surf genre in a backstage trashcan somewhere on the road…

But can you combine Surf with Punk, New Wave, Ska, Reggae, Modsound and Rockabilly?
THE RAZORBLADES say Yes! The spirit of Dick Dale still lingers over “Gimme Some Noise”, but the three piece from Germany spices the Sixties Sound with neck breaking speed, wild feedback noise and a colorful range of influences. SURF MUSIC FROM OUTER SPACE!!!!

Dr. Carl Mia uncovers a most unusual fossil. It has five fingers arranged much like a human hand, but it sports webbing and claws that suggest a marine predator. Dr. Mia assembles a team of scientists to journey to the fabled Black Telstar in search of more fossils.

The captain of their chartered riverboat, tells them the story of the aquatic monster that stalks the Black Lagoon. When Dr. Mia returns to his camp he finds that some savage beast has slaughtered his assistants.

The beast stalks the crew of the riverboat and comes aboard and attacks.

The Creature is apprehended through the use of a poison used to catch fish and is imprisoned.
The cage doesn’t hold the Creature for long though, he escapes and seriously injures Dr. Thompson.

Dr. Mia tracks the Creature to its subterranean cave. The Creature is shot and stumbles to the water. He sinks into the blackness of the lagoon. The last relic of the Devonian age is dead… or so it would seem.

Beach Boys Special Part 2

Surfin USA, Fun Fun Fun, Little Deuce Coupe - that's just one side of the Beach Boys. But what about the introspective and experimental side which they display on their later works?

This show will feature songs showing the bands maturation in the late '60s as Americas best and most versitile recording acts.

The Beach Boys started out as a family - three brothers, Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson and their cousin Mike Love. The addition of Brians school friend Al Jardine filled out the picture.

The hallmark of these recordings are the groups vocal harmonies, a new approach to arrangements and Brian's incorporation of the Wall Of Sound, originally created by Phil Spector and refined in a way that only Brian could.

"Pet Sounds" is the pinnicle in this sound, considerred the greatest album ever recorded (and inspiring The Beatles Paul McCartney to create Sgt. Pepper) . To bring his ideas to life, Brian hired top studio musicians, most notable Hal Blaine and Carrol Kaye.

By this point Brian decided not to tour any longer and found a replacement in Glen Campbell and later Bruce Johnson.

Though these songs never charted as well as the earlier hits, they are just as well known and will remain in our minds and on our radios for ever.

Beach Boys Special Part 1

For more than 40 years the Beach Boys have been the embodiment of the all-american rock band, promoting surfing, cars and girls -and especially California.

The 3 Wilson Brothers, Brian, Dennis and Carl - along with their cousin Mike Love, grew up in Southern California singing together at family gatherings. Brian added his school buddy Al Jardine and the band was complete.

In the fall of 1961 they recorded their first single "Surfin'" which hit #2 locally and #75 nationally. In the spring of 1962 The Beach Boys were signed to Capitol Records on the strength of a demo tape recorded by their father, Murry. That tape contained the two singles to follow,
Surfin Safari and 409.

Surfin Safari hit the top 20. They followed up with the great tunes Surfin USA and Surfer Girl. At this point there was no stopping the great sound that the Beach Boys were creating.

Many hits were to follow: Little Deuce Coupe, Catch a Wave, Be True To Your School, Fun Fun Fun and I Get Around. So let's get going with some of their early hits from 1962 to 1966

Sandy Nelson

Sandy Nelson was a prominent session drummer in the 50's and 60's and managed to put some instrumental hits of his own in the top ten.

He was born Sander Nelson in 1938 in Santa Monica, California. He attended high school with Jan Berry, Dean Torrence Phil Spector, and others who went on to careers in rock-and-roll. Sandy became a proficient drummer and joined his firs group, Kip Tyler and the Flips. Another member of the group was future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, who played piano. Ki Tyler and the Flips recorded some songs on the Ebb and Challenge labels.

His services as a drummer were in demand. He played drums for Spector on the Teddy Bears' number one hit To Know Him, Is To Love Him in 1958, and the following year he sessioned for Gene Vincent on Crazy Times before striking out o his own. He recorded for the Original Sound label, and his fifth release Teen Beat made it all the way to number four i 1959. It was rather unusual in that it was an instrumental song featuring Sandy's pounding drums. Instrumentals did no generally sell very well, but this one certainly did.

Sandy Nelson continued his work as a session drummer on many well known rock-and-roll songs in the early 60's, appearin on such top ten hits as Alley-Oop and A Thousand Stars. He signed a recording contract with Imperial and in 1961 release his second [and last] top ten hit, Let There Be Drums. Once again he had scored with an instrumental that featured hi driving drum beat. He had other minor hits in 1962, such as Drums Are MyBeat.

In 1963 Sandy was involved in a vehicular accident and lost part of his leg. He recovered and returned to performing the following year, and eventually released Teen Beat '65 before fading away.

The Further Adventures of Nick Danger

"The Further Adventures of Nick Danger" is probably the group's most famous recording, its characters having been reused in many subsequent sketches. It is presented as a 1940s radio drama, the "episode" title here being "Cut 'Em Off at the Past."

Nick Danger (Phil Austin) is a '40s-style detective character in the Raymond Chandler mold. In live performances and photographs, he wears the stereotypical fedora and trench coat. He has the obligatory nemesis on the police force, Lieutenant Bradshaw (Bergman), who questions his every move. His "mark" is Rocky Rococo (Proctor), a Peter Lorre imitation. True to the clichés of the genre, there is a suspicious butler, Catherwood (David Ossman), and a femme fatale, Nancy (Proctor).

Compared to other Firesign Theatre material, this sketch is a rather straightforward, basically plot-driven narrative, though it is loaded with references to The Beatles, the I Ching, and other counterculture topics. It also features various self-reflective post-modern jokes, such as a scene where the fire two characters are ostensibly sitting around is referred to as "the cellophane". (The sound of fire was famously simulated by crinkling cellophane on old radio dramas.)

At the end of the sketch, the action is interrupted at a crucial moment by a "late-breaking announcement" from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Ossman), who wearily tells the American people that Pearl Harbor has just been attacked, and that the United States will unconditionally surrender to the Japanese.

The record ends with the cast switching to the other side of the LP, "take 600".
