Geneva auctions that took place last month were a great success and definitely boosted the feelings of vintage watch community. Most auction houses had successful events, although it is worth noting Christie’s had a bit of problem with their online bidding platform after the auction house appeared to be hit with a cyber attack. The Geneva watch auctions wrapped up last week. We had some great results, an interesting last minute change at Christie’s, but most importantly a ton of excitement for the things we love. Marlon Brando’s GMT, a platinum, Beyer signed Patek Philippe 3700, a 1518 with integrated bracelet, and an incredible 6062 from Rolex in steel were all on the auction block.

OnlyWatch 2023 is touring around the world to showcase the unique piece watches that will be sold at their auction in November to raise money for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. New York City hosted the year end watch auctions for many of the major auction houses. The auctions showed an interested array of results. Everything from record-setting results for watches like the F. P. Journe’s Tourbillon Souverain in platinum with a rose-gold dial that sold for $1.24 million, but also Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks that sold for below their retail price. Is the hype over? Auction catalogues are full of Rolex watches. A very common thread amongst the watches are that they are of high quality and often times rare. Vacheron Constantin stood out this year. No question about it. They released some of the most exciting watches in a very thoughtful way. They paid tribute to their past through releases like the Ref. 222 re-edition, ensured excellence with their Overseas skeleton tourbillon, and committed to artisanship with their Great Civilizations collection and event at the Louvre. Revolution Magazine did an incredible job in their International volume 65 (US issue 23 Fall 2022) describing their success. Wei Koh interviewed CEO Louis Ferla on the success and what made them tick.

Vacheron Constantin released a re-issue of their famous reference 222, a skeleton tourbillon Overseas and a serious perpetual calendar chronograph. Tudor even released a Black Bay GMT S&G ‘Root Beer’ that will no doubt be a success. What a crazy weekend! The watch world definitely spoke this weekend about the collaboration between Omega and Swatch to create their Omega Speedmaster MoonSwatch collection. Bulgari has been all over watch news over the last 10 years. Incredible releases have come out of the watch house for many records that they have set. Well, they are at it again. Bulgari has made the thinnest watch ever produced, beating the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept which was 2mm thick. The Bulgari Octo Finnisimo Ultra comes in at 1.80mm!
Now, sure, the record is outstanding, but get this. The watch has a scannable QR code on the front of the watch that gives the wearer a NFT artwork. How modern is that?

Exports kicked of the year on a good note, notching up 6.8% compared to this time last year. There were interesting results for steel watches, which made up 3/4 of total exports for the month. We discuss main markets, price categories and significant regions for the month.

During my travels this week, I was able to catch up on some of the movies I had missed. I ended up watch Ford vs Ferrari - an epic film about the 1966 24 hour Le Mans race. This was a showdown between Ford Motor Company and Ferrari featuring Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as Ken Miles. Of course, I couldn’t miss the watches on their wrist which were two really great Heuers. The first, a Heuer Carrera, Reference 7753 SN and the second Autavia ref. 2446 ‘Rindt’.

So, Omega has released an $81,000 Speedmaster. The new Speedmaster is constructed with a new alloy for it’s case called Canopus Gold made from 18k white gold with platinum, rhodium, and palladium to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Speedmaster. What a crazy couple of weeks. Patek Philippe had announced earlier in the year that they were discontinuing the 5711. They decided to end the year with a bang, and release a limited edition Tiffany-blue dial Nautilus 5711, signed by Tiffany & Co to commemorate their 170-year relationship. There were only 170 released, and one of them was offered at Phillips New York. Well, it ended up selling for a total of $6.5 million. Thought a steel Nautilus couldn’t sell for that much? Think again! I discuss the result, what it means for watches (and auctions) and a recent siting of one of the extraordinarily rare watches on the wrist of a famous artist.

This past weekend was a crazy rush of all the watch auctions that took place. There were some incredible lots of vintage and modern watches sold to some lucky new owners. Only Watch managed to raise its second highest amount of money for Muscular Dystrophy and Phillips saw record sale prices for many of its watches. MB&F is not a a company that typically makes piece unique watches. But, they have pulled out a piece unique watch that was a prototype of the Legacy Machine 1 that they made in 2011. The watch is in celebration of 10 years of the LM1, and is the LM1 ‘Longhorn’ which describes the prototype lugs the steel LM1 features. The watch will be auction at Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo on Sunday, November 7th (2021) in Geneva– and a significant portion of the proceeds will be donated to Save the Rhino International.

There is so much focus on how much someone’s watch costs, sometimes less importance is put on the generations of watchmaking that went into the creation of such watch. Geneva Watch Days were in full swing last week. MB&F showcased an incredible watch that was produced with their long standing collaborator, L'Epée 1839 called the Orb. This clock has an incredible design with wings come together to form an orb, but can also be opened up and different angles to create something that is out of a Sci-fi movie. The beating heart of the clock is on the inside of the orb and is a tall, 8-day power reserve, in-house manual wind movement with a chime that rings ever hour. What a sight to be seen!

I don’t want to spoil the story too much, but as as the title alludes to, we had a pretty wild experience with one of our watches. While I was swimming in the ocean, a watch I was wearing came off our wrist. Surprisingly, it survived the month of being under water and was even returned to me by those who found it. It is a crazy story, so I hope you enjoy it.

Today we are covering the July 2021 watch export results from Switzerland. Results were mainly positive, with exports breaching the CHF 2 billion mark. We saw a big flight to more expensive pieces, with units exported lower by 320,000 pieces. This gives us some interesting insight into the outlook for the rest of the year.

This past week, there was definitely one topic that was discussed at length (and with raised voices) by collectors which was the Olive Green dial Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711 that was sold at Antiquorum for well over it’s retail price. This is a watch that was recently released and due to lack of inventory is very difficult to get. The watch retails for ~$35,000… it sold for just shy of half a million at auction. This event uncovered many things in the world of watches; the pricing bubble of the secondhand/grey market and inventory levels of very in demand watches - and so let’s talk about it!

Vacheron Constantin has been a big part of Life on the Wrist. The Toledo, or ‘Cioccolatone’ as it is nicknamed, was one of our favourite watches for a very long time. Today, we are looking at a Vacheron Constantin reference 4963 that has many design elements that are similar to the Toledo. It also is easily one of the best vintage dress watches we have had for our store.

An exciting announcement happened - the famous Baselworld fair is back! The MCH Group has announced that the fair that has taken place in Basel, Switzerland since 1931 will be returning in 2022. This is a big announcement after many brands have left the fair in the last few years. Tudor has become a huge part of many watch collectors collections. The variety and interesting history of many of their references has created a profound opinion for most people for the brand. The Tudor Prince Oysterdate is a very popular reference as it mimics the design elements of the Rolex Datejust, but is more affordable. There are some references of the Oysterdate that are nicknamed ‘Jumbo’ because of the larger 38mm case size. Today we take a look at a reference 90814 from 1983 that is a great example of simplicity.

Rightfully so, the Speedmaster is an incredible watch, with an interesting history and deserves the attention it gets. LeJour is a French watch company that was founded in the 1960’s and had a very interesting history. It was well known for having selling agreements with brands like Heuer and were a US distributor for companies like Yema. When one is buying a watch, many times they look for the ‘swiss made’ stamp on the dial of the watch as a signature of quality for that watch. But what does that really mean? Is it just a marketing strategy by watch companies to get you to purchase their watches? The New York Times published an interesting article where they go into what this means and what watch manufactures are doing about it. The article discusses the transparency that many companies are moving towards to show people where their materials are sourced from. This even spurred on a movement by manufactures like Panerai, Ulysee Nardin and IWC to create watches from reusable or upcycled material. We give you our thoughts on the article!

There were a ton of companies, including watch companies, that had some fun this year for April Fools Day. With everything that has happened this last year, I think we all needed to have a chuckle. Hodinkee released a very funny ‘Hodinkee branded’ watch that definitely caught some people out. Obviously a joke, it was nice to see Hodinkee laugh at themselves every once and a while.
One company decided to actually release a watch on April Fools Day that many people thought was a joke. You guessed it, H Moser decided to come out with a watch that had a pixelated eraser on the dial. Manufactured in just 20 pieces, it certainly reminds us that watchmaking doesn’t have to be so serious, but we can also have fun with it!
The last thing we cover is Patek Philippe changed the way they will issue Extracts from their Archive. There were some big changes that definitely will have an impact on vintage watch (and modern watch) collection.

It is hard to believe, but 10 years ago MB&F released their first Legacy Machine watch that would start a line of watches that pays tribute to the legacy of the watchmakers that came before us. The LM1 was revolutionary in design, like just about every MB&F watch. Last week, they released the LMX which Max describes as the LM1 but on steroids. We give you our thoughts on the watch, the launch event they held for the watch and our opinions on what makes the Legacy Machines so special.

Last week there were some really cool watches that were released from some big names. Audemars Piguet released a Platinum Royal Oak reference 15202 with a sunburst green dial. Piaget released the Polo Skeleton, a skeleton dial Polo S with a very beautiful movement. Tissot released a modern version of the PRX, a great affordable stainless steel sports watch that has similar aesthetics to the Royal Oak or the Nautilus.

Clubhouse is a new social media platform that has popped up over the last year that is an invitation-only audio-chat platform. Users can create rooms and have discussions about any topic they want. There are hosts who facilitate the conversations and allows users to listen, learn and sometimes participate in the discussions. As with any social media platform, there is of course a watch community that is slowly migrating to Clubhouse. The discussions that we have been a part of so far have been very interesting, with many large figures in the watch community facilitating the discussions. We have spoken about micro brands, the modern watch craze for steel sports watches, and even about the pre-owned watch space. The discussions are great show potential for great virtual watch events.
Today we are doing a weekly roundup of some of the news out of Life on the Wrist. We take a look at more partnership news in the watch industry as Watchonista partner with Ebay for content creation. Collecting watches is a very personal hobby. The watches people decide to have in their collections often speak to their character, style, interests and what they resonate with. Once a collect gets through the learning phase where they own a couple of different watches, they normally get an idea for what types of watches they really want to own for a longer period of time. The themes they chose to collect by are formed at this stage. We talk about common traits that often times form collections. Some people like to collect vintage watches, or only Rolex or Omega watches. Others like to collect specific complications like chronographs or annual calendars. There is variety, and that is what makes forming a watch collection so fun.

Well, big news in the watch industry. Hodinkee announced that they acquired Crown & Caliber, a leading watch dealer in the pre-owned space. This definitely shakes up the make-up of the preowned world. It also adds another capability that Hodinkee is able to offer. We talk through the deal, what it means to Hodinkee, its capability make-up from an operations perspective, and the future of this sector of the watch industry.

There was an interesting brand article written in the New York Times about watch brand ambassadors and if they still sell watches for watch manufacturers. There are multiple view points on whether or not brand ambassadors and sponsorships really work. Different companies use them in different ways. Jean-Claude Biver and Tag Heuer’s use of ambassadors differs greatly from Rolex, Breitling and A. Lange & Söhne. Here are our thoughts on how sponsorships, or lack thereof, are like today.

Vintage watch collectors know that Patek Philippe is extremely, if not the most collectable watch brand out there. Many regard them as being head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to the art of classical watchmaking. Today we take a look at a beautiful reference 2594 from the late 1960’s that has an extremely unique case design often termed “Disco Volante” by collectors which means ‘saucer’ in Italian. This watch also has the 23-300 movement which is regarded by many as being one of the best hand-wound movements ever produced. It is rare, beautiful and worth taking your time at.
Side note: It had been a while since a watch took our breath away; this Patek did exactly that.

With all the vintage watch options you have out there, it is often hard to find watches of value that are at the same time affordable. Vintage Omega has seen a great increase in prices over the last couple years, but we think Longines still is affordable. The watches are obviously from a well-established, high quality brand that produces high quality pieces and there is a lot of variety in their vintage watches. They also are affordable, relatively speaking, in the world of vintage watches. Today we discuss a vintage Longines we got in for our store and how incredible Longines is from a value perspective in the vintage watch world.

Double-signed watches are exceedingly rare in watch collecting. We talk about a very special Universal Genève from 1945, right after World War II, that bares both the manufactures signature and the famous London based jeweler, JW Benson. Vacheron Constantin is one of our favourite watch brands. Not only do they have a rich history of creating watches that go above and beyond, they were also one of the first brands that really caught our attention.

This past weekend, Phillips hosted their last auction for 2020 called Racing Pulse. There were some incredible lots in this auction. To name a few - another one of Paul Newman’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona’s was sold for a record price of $5 million, Steve McQueen’s Heuer Monaco that he wore at Le Mans in 1970 was also sold for a record price. There were some interesting themes that came from this auction, let us know what you think!

We had the pleasuring of being able to source two incredible watches for some clients of Life on the Wrist. The first watch was a very crispy Rolex Explorer II. It was the black dial version of the reference 16570 and was for a client who had purchased watches from us in the past. It was so nice to continue to be a part of their watch journey and get them a watch that marked many occasions in their life. The Explorer can be found here.
The second watch was an incredibly beautiful vintage LeCoultre from the 1950’s. It has a triple calendar moon-phase complication and is basically the definition of vintage. The LeCoultre can be found here.

Even though watch exports were still in the negative territory for October 2020, there were small signs that a recovery could be on its way. Clocking in at -7%, October was the best month for exports in 10 months. There were some interesting results in gold and steel watches as well as watches over CHF500.
