"Using Big Data and Causal Methods to Improve Clinical Practice"

Faculty Transition Webinar Series Session 3 "Health of Your Wealth: Retiring against a backdrop of change"
The Faculty Transition Webinar Series sponsored by the Office for Senior Faculty Affairs addresses the many elements that come into play as faculty move toward retirement. This third session addressed the financial aspect of retirement. Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants were able to:
- Provide a financial check-up for physicians in their 50’s and 60’s to help ensure they are on track for a successful retirement transition.
- Discuss advanced strategies to help maximize their future social security monthly benefit as well as key points about Medicare.
- Review recent changes in tax and estate law changes in MA.
- Share considerations when investing in the context of an election, war, deglobalization, and changing interest rates.

“Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and PCOS - Interrelations and Differentiations”

- Recognize that in functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) patients without polycystic ovary morphology (PCOM), decreased anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) levels do not seem to be a sign of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR)
- Indicate that the prevalence of PCOM in FHA patients is 30-50%, so the differential diagnosis between PCOS and FHA is a very common and important one
- Identify that women affected by FHA showing PCOM tend to reveal some characteristics of PCOS - presumably some of these women were suffering from PCOS

In commemoration of Faculty Development Month, the Center for Faculty Development invites you to the thirteenth annual Nancy J. Tarbell, MD, Faculty Development Lecture Series. The lecture was established to honor Dr. Tarbell’s dedication and leadership. She was the founding Director of both the MGH Center for Faculty Development and the Office for Women’s Careers, where she was instrumental in advancing and promoting the academic careers of MGH faculty.

“A new technology to monitor the fetus”

Presenter: Fiona Brownfoot, MBBS, FRANZCOG, PhD, Associate Professor of OB/GYN, University of Melbourne, Australia
Dr. Brownfoot is an obstetrician scientist, Associate Professor, and head of the Obstetric Diagnostics and Therapeutics Group at the University of Melbourne. She heads a multidisciplinary team of physicists, chemists, and engineers. She is recognized internationally for discovering the first potential treatment for preeclampsia, metformin. Additionally, she is known for developing novel devices to better monitor the fetus, including a fetal ECG and a pH sensor for potential use in labor.

“Novel role of chemokines in the ovulatory cascade and their potential application for nonhormonal contraceptive development”

- Describe the periovulatory events and the increasing evidence for the role of chemokines in regulating these crucial events in different species
- Assess our laboratory evidence regarding the chemokine receptor CCR2 and its chemokine ligands in the ovarian follicles and cumulus-oocyte complex (COC) in the rhesus monkeys and domestic cats
- Analyze the direct effect of triggering or inhibiting the CCR2 receptor within the COC using a feline model in vitro
- Evaluate the interaction between the CCR2 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR, a crucial intermediate in the ovulatory cascade) systems within the feline COC
- Review and discuss the overall course of this research

Mid to late career for highly motivated individuals can be a time of stress and transition, but also a chance to reflect, re-energize, and reimagine work and life. Recent research in the fields of life span development and positive psychology highlights that the old paradigm and mindset of gradual decline into the retirement years is no longer accurate or helpful. In this webinar, Stephanie and Russ shared a high-level roadmap as well as practical first steps participants can take to move towards higher levels of intentionality and fulfillment in the mid to late stages of their careers. Career Development Panel Series 4
Drawing on faculty interest, the Center for Faculty Development organized a series of four webinars on specific aspects of academic career development, whether to build toward promotion consideration or to enrich professional knowledge and experience. Learn more about where to find and how to join initiatives or committees of interest, the dimensions of major administrative roles, how and when to get involved on an editorial board, and, ultimately, when it makes sense to say yes to a new responsibility—or decline the opportunity.

- Recognize the challenges posed by having 168 hours each week and being nice
- Identify the opportunities you should always say yes to
- Discuss the opportunities with colleagues that you should likely say no to
- Recommend mentees/colleagues to help further their careers when you are unable to say yes to requests/invitations

Virtual audiences, while perhaps less fear-inspiring, can be even harder to engage. Dr. Glastonbury shared tips on how to conceive and prepare your next presentation and then present so that you can connect with your audience, share your expertise, and enjoy the experience.

Presenter: Christine M. Glastonbury, MBBS, is a Professor of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging, Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, and Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Glastonbury is a Neuroradiologist with a particular academic and clinical interest Head & Neck (HN) Imaging, and specifically HN cancer. She works closely with the Radiation Oncologists and HN surgeons on a weekly basis to optimize the care of HN cancer patients at UCSF. She has written and published multiple books, more than 130 articles and received multiple awards for teaching, mentoring and for education exhibits at scientific meetings.
Dr. Glastonbury completed her medical degree and Radiology training at the University of Adelaide and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia before completing a fellowship at the Hammersmith Hospital in London. She then completed two years of Neuroradiology Fellowship and a year of Body Fellowship at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City before moving to San Francisco in 2001.
At UCSF Dr. Glastonbury is the Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs and served as interim Chief of Neuroradiology for nearly 4 years until August 2021. She is the director of Mentoring in Radiology, a member of the Radiology Diversity Committee, and a co-founder and strong advocate for UCSF Women in Radiology. Dr. Glastonbury serves on the Executive Council of the American Roentgen Ray Society and on the Executive Committee for the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology where she is also the Treasurer. She is the Program President for the Symposium Neuroradiologicum XXII of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Sciences in May 2022.

Good comedy is unifying and even a small amount in an otherwise dry lecture can make it (and you!) significantly more engaging. Beth Sherman talked about learning how to identify and take advantage of organic comedic opportunities in your presentations. She covered the basic rules of comedy writing, including self-awareness, specificity, breaking patterns, rules of threes, joke structure, and why some words are funnier than others. The ultimate goal isn’t to force comedy or make every presentation hilarious, simply to add a bit of seasoning when and where it will be appreciated most.

Prior to that, she spent more than a decade doing stand-up comedy, performing at clubs, colleges and military bases all over world, including Kuwait and Iraq.
As a speechwriter, she's the founder of "Authentically Funny Speeches," a ghostwriting and coaching service focused on helping non-show business professionals add humor to personal and professional toasts, speeches and presentations.

The Parenting Series is an Office for Women’s Careers initiative focused on well-being and work-life balance for MGH faculty and trainee parents. Each session includes a panel of people with lived experience sharing their thoughts and stimulating discussion on a topic relevant to managing parenthood.
This panel discussion focused on fun things to do with your kids! Anne Fishel, PhD, talked about the importance of mealtimes during the pandemic, how they changed, and what the Family Dinner Project has to offer to help families harness the many nutritional, mental health, and academic benefits of shared mealtimes. Anne Levy, PhD, shared her insights into the experience of reading aloud to her three children before bedtime until they were in middle school - short and then longer books from her children’s, hers, and her parents’ generation. Rana Chudnofsky, MEd, was not recorded, but she shared the essential tools to build resilience and improve your health and quality of life, while helping support your children and teens to learn and practice their own resiliency building skills.

As a professional health care writer for the past 20 years, Dr. Shannon has focused on highlighting issues in the US health care system, including lack of reliability, gaps in communication, and clinician burnout. She is co-author of Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine, which was published in 2016.
Dr. Shannon is a leading expert in helping clinicians identify the places where they have agency and make changes to improve their professional and personal lives. Dr. Shannon has especially focused on helping women physicians address burnout, overwhelm, and self-doubt. She continues to advocate for health system change through her writing and speaking engagements.
Dr. Shannon attended Williams College, Jefferson Medical College, and Harvard University. She completed training in Internal Medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston and practiced general internal medicine prior to making the shift to writing and coaching.

The Office of Well-Being and Office for Research Careers hosted Giulia Arsuffi, from The Clever Neuron, to help participants navigate these times.
