In our zeal to be noticed, we are killing our most important words.
I recently read the "ultimate" guide to content marketing, but it was not that great. It was an okay guide to content marketing.
I also hear people using "awesome" and "remarkable" all the time, when really the things they're describing are not worthy of awe or remark.
Now that we've completely overused words like awesome, ultimate, and remarkable, where do we go from here? What words will we use now? I'm not sure, and would love to hear what you think.

I'm going to give you an easy way to know whether or not the people who work for or with you care enough about what you're doing.
We just bought a new car for my daughter who is officially legal to drive in Indiana, and my experience with the salesman was exceptional. Why? Because he was genuinely excited about the car that I was buying and knew more about it than anyone else.
On the other end of the spectrum, I overheard a woman on a phone call who was telling the person on the other line that the reason she left one job and went to a new one was because the one job offered more vacation days.
If all you care about is the number of vacation days you get and if your work always feels like work, you're not in the right job.
Here's my advice if you're an employer or manager:
Go talk to the people on your team and tell them, "We're going to double the amount of vacation days this year."
The people who are super excited about that are the ones that shouldn't be working at your company.
There are a lot of people out there who say you should follow your passion and find a job that you love. This isn't realistic for everyone because they have circumstances keeping them in a certain job for the money or the benefits. But that's not their fault; it's the employer's fault.
What you need to do as an employer is hire for passion and train for skills, not the other way around.

I got some sad news recently. Sports Illustrated has laid off its last six contract photographers and is going to go full freelance instead.
Sports Illustrated is known for its photography, so why would it let go of the people who helped make it known for this?
Southwest Airlines is still the only airline that offers a free checked bag and no change fees. They probably lose thousands if not millions of dollars each year by offering this, but they recognize that it's an important value-add to their customers, so that's why they continue to do it.
Taking the thing that made you special and getting rid of it is the worst thing you can do for your business. If I were running Sports Illustrated, I would make it nothing but pictures. I would capitalize on that amazing photography that put the magazine on the map.
Cutting your way to success has never worked, and it never will.

I ripped on Delta a few weeks ago because I felt like they were undercutting their most loyal members (http://youtu.be/Kg4U4ykTNjs). But sometimes a brand does something to win back your heart and your trust. I was in Atlanta making a connection on my way to sunny Puerto Vallarta, and the agents thanked me for being a platinum member when they scanned my boarding pass. Pretty standard behavior as far as I've seen, but what they did next surprised me. They scanned my wife's boarding pass and said:"Mrs. Baer, I just want to thank you for allowing your husband to live on our planes. Sometimes the wives get ignored, but I just want you to know how much we appreciate you."Wow! Talk about something that really changes the way you feel about an organization and makes your day. There are two lessons here for your business:1. It's the little things that count. Find small things that don't cost anything but time and desire to do and make them happen.2. Allow your team members to work off-script. These unplanned events are often the things that have the biggest impact on your organization.SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/jaybaer00SPROUT SOCIAL SHOUT OUTToday's Sprout Social shout out goes to Lisa Loeffler (http://twitter.com/lisamloeffler), who is the publicity and events manager at Convince & Convert and helped plan this magnificent retreat for the team. When brands start using phrases like "bae" and "on fleek", it's not the slang that's the problem, it's the targeting.
One recent article about this use of slang among brands stated that they see it as a desperate attempt to connect with their audiences, and proof that they're not doing a great job of it.
I don't have a problem with brands using youth culture slang, especially if those brands are targeted to those younger demographics. The biggest issues occur when brands use that kind of language on Twitter.
Demographically, Twitter reaches a really broad cross-section, but has no ability to do any sort of targeting unless you pay for it. As a result, brands are pumping out this language to anyone in the world whether it makes sense to them or not. This is a problem. If you're going to use any kind of slang, make sure you're using it on the networks and to the audiences that actually know what you're talking about and can use that language in a sentence, otherwise you're totally missing the mark.

You may think there are many things that could keep someone from doing their best, but the reality is that there's really only one reason why.
Some people don't do great work because they're not passionate - they don't love the client they're working with or the project they're on.
Some people are stretched too thin - they don't have the time to devote to doing great work.
The truth is that if you are passionate about your work and really love what you're doing, the time issue will fix itself. You make the time or find the time to be great because you want to, and everyone will benefit as a results.

Unless you're selling advertising, website traffic isn't really the goal.
In some recent research, the Content Marketing Institute found that the number one thing that ineffective content marketers have in common is that they use website traffic as a key success metric.
Instead of measuring views, consider actionable metrics like whether visitors tell their friends about you, make a purchase, or fill out a contact form. These deeper metrics are much more valuable when figuring out whether your content marketing has been successful.

When I started the Jay Today show, I didn't know whether it would catch on or if people would like it. In the moments since launching the show, however, I've realized that the show's talkable trigger is its length. The show is only 3 minutes long each day, which is different from most video and audio podcasts. This is what has triggered a word of mouth marketing effect.
You may not plan your WOM feature; it's something might discover over time. But unless you have a talkable trigger for your product, service, or project, you're never going to be successful.

Is every email you send helping your brand image or hurting it?
In a recent Social Pros Podcast interview with Scott Stratten (http://www.convinceandconvert.com/soc...), we discussed the idea of a "brand pulse," which says that you are never neutral about a brand - you always have some level of negativity of positivity in your mind.
Now that it's so easy to press "send" to tens or hundreds or thousands of fans, it's more important than ever to really think and consider whether or not your emails are increasing your audience's love of your brand or not. And if you're not sure, chances are you're not.

The problem with technology is that it forces you to think that everybody uses technology.
What's happening at CES and the sharing economy in big cities isn't really happening in smaller town. This is a dangerous game to play because we think that everyone is using technology and social media, we start to create products and services that won't be consumed by the masses.
Take this ad that I found in my local paper - it's for a baby monkey doll called Clementine. If you order this weighted monkey doll for $99.99, you can expect to receive it at your house within 10-12 weeks (unless mobile app-delivered marijuana at your door within minutes or Amazon next-day delivery service).
This ad isn't from 50 years ago, it's from yesterday. There is a large percentage of this country that's more like that consumers who want a baby monkey doll than who want to know about the technology at CES.
You are not your own customer, and if you can remember that, you'll be better off.

The economy is getting better than ever in the United States, and here's how I know it's true.
I was in New York City having lunch with a friend, and while the restaurant is generally good, the service was terrible. I couldn't even get a water refill. This experience reminded me of my thesis:
When service is bad, the economy is good.
This is because when the economy is good, the people who end up taking service jobs fall down the ladder of expertise. While it might be frustrating to get bad service, this might actually bode well for our economy. What do you think?

Are you as efficient as you could be at how you learn about marketing and business?
It's a really interesting time for podcasts. Recent research has shown that from 2013 to now, podcast consumption has increased to 15% of Americans. That means 15% of all Americans have listened to a podcast, which is a huge number of people. It's almost as many people as use Twitter or Instagram.
People are so busy. The more technology we have, the busier we get. That's why podcasting has is on the rise – it allows you to do something useful as you're doing something else that's useful.
As a result, today I'm announcing a new venture called MarketingPodcasts.com, a discovery engine for marketing podcasts. You can search by category, topic, audience approval rating, and more to find new podcasts to learn from. Check out the site and let me know what you think!

Maybe it's too easy to send somebody an email. And maybe when you do, you're actually doing more harm than good.
I was hiding in the basement on Cyber Monday because I was inundated with emails from hundreds of companies, many of which I hadn't heard from in years.
I wasn't alone - people were getting multiple emails in the same day from the same brand, which is ridiculous. Yes, it may be true that Cyber Monday sales were up 8% over last year, but a lot people had to piss off a lot of other people to make this happen.
Instead of clicking a button to send an email, companies need to look at email value over the long term. Just because you made your Cyber Monday sales doesn't mean this strategy is going to pay off in the long run because it will likely cause ill will and unsubscribes.
You have to be thoughtful about what you're doing and what you're sending to your subscribers.

When are companies going to learn that nickel and diming their customers isn't going to work in the long haul?
For a 5 year period, I spent 100 nights per year in the same room at a Marriott hotel in Phoenix. I was there so often, in fact, that the manager invited me to his going away party when he switched jobs.
But I've recently learned that Marriott has petitioned to have all outside wireless connections banned in their hotels because, as they say, they're worried about people hacking their systems.
We all know, however, that it's because they want to charge for their wifi instead of letting customers access it for free. On the other hand, other major hotel brands are now offering FREE wifi because they realize that wifi isn't an amenity. It's a basic right to customers.
It reminds me of a few months ago when I was at Disney and they were charging per refill of soda. This is ridiculous. You're treating your customers like cattle. Enough of this. You won't see me at a whole lot of Marriotts in 2015, that's for sure.

Social media is never going to get the credit it deserves when driving commerce and here's why:
My wife gave me a brand new laptop bag for Christmas (for the first time ever, I told her exactly what I wanted). I had heard about the bag from my friend Rohit Bhargava, who recommended it in a private Facebook group that I'm a part of. The bag is not sold in the United States, so I gave my wife the link.
As a result, the bag company will never know that I heard about it from social media. Instead, they'll see it as direct traffic or potentially organic traffic from Google.
This is an important reminder for marketers. Just because you can't always see the impact of social media doesn't mean it doesn't exist. This is why brands are using surveys more and more to figure out what social media's true value is. How are you measuring the value of social in your marketing?

Is our addiction to Twitter ruining journalism?
Last week, I saw an article from People.com about Elon Musk, who is the founder of Tesla and SpaceX. It turned out Elon is divorcing his wife (again).
The interesting thing about this article was not the content, but the last sentence, which said that Elon Musk did not immediately tweet out a comment about the divorce.
Are people's tweets really what journalism is all about now? Are journalists unable to pick up the phone to get a statement about their reports or are they only going to use public tweets as facts?
I get it. It's tough to be a journalist these days and budgets are tight. But if you're still a working journalist, you need to hold yourself to a higher standard of reporting. Monitoring the Twitterverse is not journalism, and it's a lazy way of reporting. I hope this isn't the end of journalism as we know it.

You think you might need new or more content this year, but it's possible that the content you need might be right under your nose.
In all of the marketing trends and predictions for 2015, I've been saying the same thing: This year is going to be the year of cooperative content.
What do I mean by this? I mean that the content sources that you have at your disposal are vast and untapped. Everyone that works for you, every customer you have, and every business partner is potentially a content creator. You can use their skills and knowledge to create new and interesting content that helps drive revenue.
Stop thinking of content as some Hollywood film that you have to create and start considering the ways you can get your content out quickly. These Jay Today videos are recorded in my house with my iPhone, for example, yet we still get thousands of views each day.
You have so many content sources at your finger tips, and my challenge for you in 2015 is to figure out how to use them.

We're being told to do more faster, but is that always the best way?
The brisket that I made for Christmas Eve took about 12 hours when all was said and done. As a barbecue judge (it's true!), I've learned that all the best barbecue takes a really long time.
And although we're often better off now to be fast than be good, sometimes our customers don't want that. They want to self-serve educate and then make decisions later.
Gary Vaynerchuk said it best. He says that the problem with most marketers today is that they act like 19-year-old guys who want to close the deal on the first date.
Instead of always trying to close the deal, make sure you give your customers a second option besides "buy." Give them a chance to do something else, like subscribe to your blog or newsletter. That way, when enough time goes by for them to trust and feel comfortable with your brand, they will indeed want to give you their money.
As it turns out, all the great things in life actually require you to go slow.

Is your job massively in demand in 2015?
Recently, LinkedIn released their top 25 jobs of 2014. Number one was "Big Data Analyst", and many other technical and marketing jobs were included as well.
The number 5 most searched for professional skill on LinkedIn in 2014 was SEO and paid search. Despite the claims that "SEO is dead" and "content is king," helping people find and land on your website is still extremely important.
Will you reconsider the importance of search in 2015?

Is social media so important now that we should be teaching it as a mandatory class in high school?
In the UK, students are required to take a class on cyber security. Their idea is that since kids are using social media so pervasively, they should understand how their status updates and Instagram posts affect their privacy and their future. Of course, it begs the question: Should this class also be required here in the U.S. and across the world?
In San Francisco, some educators are saying that, well, kids need to know how to swim, but we don't teach that in school so why should we teach social media?
But if my mom, who has been a high school teacher for 30 years says, "Absolutely, we should be teaching social media in high school," then I agree.
What do you think?

Whatever you're scared of, here's how to fix that:
I'm recording this episode from a recording studio in Bloomington where I'm creating audio versions of my books.
I was freaked out about this process. What if people don't like the way they sound? What if I screw up?
I'm not a big believer in writing down your goals because I feel like you're limiting yourself. But many times when you're scared of something, it's all in the abstract.
To overcome your fears, write them down. Because when you take a piece of paper and write down all the things we're scared of, you can dimensionalize them, look them in the face, and overcome them.

Sometimes when we try to use technology to solve problems, there's an easier way.
I have a personal story about this, which happened over Thanksgiving. I was going to a friend's farm to enjoy a deep fried turkey with some friends, when we realize we didn't have enough oil.
We drove over to the grocery store, only to realize neither one of us had our wallets. We couldn't pay for the oil!
Being the tech-type that I am, I went through every money app on my phone - Paypal, my banking app, Apple Pay, and others. I wasn't able to use any of them to pay for the oil at this grocery store.
Just when we thought we were out of luck, my friend made a novel suggestion:
"Why don't we just ask someone?"
Somewhat ashamed that I hadn't thought of this myself, we were able to convince someone to lend us the $15 to buy the oil with the promise that we would pay him back (more than double what he spent for his trouble).
Instead of using the "Uber" for whatever app on your phone to get something done, why not just pick up the phone and call someone? Or ask a friend? Maybe the tech is more trouble than it's worth and
sometimes, we fall prey to technology to the detriment of ourselves.

If you're some kind of drunk hobo dressed up as an Elmo in Times Square of Hollywood, that's not really doing much for the Elmo brand, is it?
In December, UPS is scheduled to deliver 580 million packages in the United States alone. But I've noticed that during the month of December with all of these deliveries, the UPS branding goes out the window. they're using Budget rental trucks, their friend's pickup, or some other mode of delivery, and they're looking haggard and worn.
Does it really benefit the company when you have so many customers or so many Elmos or so many non-Starbucks employees working at the airport Starbucks?
Sometimes, the zest for growth actually hurts your customer experience because you are cobbling together a delivery strategy without the proper resources.
I'm not certain that customer service and branding can survive being that busy and that big. What do you think?

Maybe hashtags are more trouble than they're worth.
There was a recent Twitter controversy in Indianapolis surrounding the protestors that were arrested for blocking traffic on Sunday night, and the Indianapolis newspaper had contacted me to see what I thought about it.
You can read more about the situation here (http://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2014/12/05/critics-condemn-impd-wecanbreathe-tweet/19941857/), but in general, I've noticed that in a lot of cases when Twitter goes bad, its' because of the hashtag. It could be a simple typo or misunderstanding, or it could be a larger case of misused newsjacking.
We're addicted to speed and brevity now, but Twitter is already a short form social network site. Hashtags are like a shortcut within a shortcut. We need to be conscious of this and be extremely careful about how and when we use hashtags to avoid these kinds of issues.

More than ever, businesses, especially big B2B companies, need to create content. And they're trying to find creative and interesting ways to create that content, oftentimes tapping into the knowledge of their own employees.
The problem they encounter is that the engineer or the artist or whoever holds the knowledge is not interested in writing a blog post or shooting a video for the company marketing efforts.
Instead of relying on them, worry about getting the content first, and worry about the format second.
Get the information out of the person's head however you can and then take that information to create content on your own.
There's a company called Backbone Media that got people on the phone and interviewed them about 2015 trends. They then took those telephone interviews and created blog posts and videos out of them. This way, the people being interviewed didn't have to worry about writing anything or sending any tweets. All they had to do was get on the phone and talk for a couple minutes.
Another example of this idea is what we do here with the Jay Today show. We create 8 pieces of content out of the Jay Today show, and I outlined our process on the Convince & Convert blog last week: http://www.convinceandconvert.com/content-marketing/how-to-make-8-pieces-of-content-from-1-piece-of-content/

What's the point of accruing airline miles if you can't even use them?
If you've ever tried to use airline miles to book a flight, then you know how difficult it can be. But what if you were able to use airline miles for something other than air travel?
United Airlines is partnering with their terminal in Newark to offer a new program where customers can use their United miles to pay for food and beverages. This sounds like a brilliant idea given the amount of miles that people have, but never get to spend.
Now, if they could tie this into Apple Pay, I'd be all over it!
Is there something else besides actual flights that you'd use airline miles to pay for? Let me know in the comments.

Just because something exists in popular culture, doesn't mean you have to use it as a platform for click-bait.
The new Hunger Games movie just came out last Friday (at the time this episode was recorded). And almost immediately after the film was released, people started writing articles about things like "what PR pros can learn about crisis management from the Hunger Games".
Writing articles that tie into pop culture events doesn't build your thought leadership in the industry. In fact, I believe it does the opposite. Instead of trying to relate to what's happening in Hollywood, why not just write the post about what you actually know about your top tips for crisis communications?
Everyone has written a blog post about pop culture (including me). But we have to draw the line somewhere, because trying to tie marketing and communications into pop culture events is ridiculous.

Why do people think it's okay to bribe their customers to talk about them in social media?
There's a company down in SoHo that is offering a deal to its customers: If you mention them on Twitter, they will give you dollars off of your purchase. Customers will get $1 for every 500 followers they have up to $20.
The company makes gourmet onesies for adults. Just because someone has 10,000 followers and the person tweets about it, doesn't mean the person is influential about onesies or even cares about them. It also doesn't mean that anything will listen to the person who mentions the company just because they talked about them on social.
Quit worrying about audience and start worrying about creating the kind of experience that people actually want to create content about. Give them something they care about and they'll go ahead and create social media content on their own because they want to.

Facebook already has all your free time. Will they get your business too?
Facebook recently announced that it is releasing a business tool that will allow companies and teams to communicate internally, share files, and exchange feedback. It will look like Facebook but will compete with Yammer and other internal communications tools.
I would imagine that business professionals, and especially IT professionals, might feel dubious about giving Facebook even more of their personal information. Plus, there are already companies that are doing this, and doing a great job at it I might add. It's hard to know if this will catch on or if it will flop.
So, what do you think? Would YOU use Facebook for Business?

After creating your online videos, are you putting them in the wrong place?
We talked about the success of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a few months ago and the small Facebook shift that helped make it so successful (watch that episode here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtUFA...).
Coupled with the auto play functionality from Facebook, new research from Business Insider has found that Facebook may be more engaging for audiences than YouTube. The example they showed was from a British company, whose latest video saw almost 40% of the total shares come from Facebook. Plus, among the people who watched the video on Facebook, the sharing ratio was 5%. Compare that to YouTube? Only 1%.
I can say first hand that we are seeing traction for the Jay Today show from Facebook. We put the show on YouTube, Facebook, and iTunes, and we're seeing more views and shares on Facebook than any other place.
If I'm a brand now, and I have a short-form video like this one, I am most definitely putting my videos on YouTube AND Facebook.

Are Amazon and Ali Baba going to dominate our lives in ways that Google and Apple never will?
Amazon has introduced a new tool called Echo. It's basically Siri, but as a standalone device that's not connected to your phone. You can ask it for any information, like weather or sports scores, and you can also ask it for things like toilet paper and books.
That's because it's connected to Amazon's e-commerce system, and I'd imagine more partnerships will be coming soon.
This is a very interesting and potentially scary development because it is taking our buying process from one click to zero clicks. Now, instead of going to the store or browsing online, all of our shopping can theoretically be done with our voice.
Commerce is ultimately the key to our hearts. Commerce is the killer app. And that's why Echo is going to change everything. Whoever controls commerce is going to control the household.

Are you putting all of your emphasis on social media measurement on exactly the wrong thing?
I recently did a webinar with social media management platform, Expion, about cross-channel analytics. Albert Chou, CIO of Expion, brought up a great point: We've got tons of social media measures of outputs, but we are not always measuring the input.
Forget about how your social media activities perform for a minute. How much does it actually cost to do these social media activities?
We can measure outputs very easily, but we almost never take the time measuring the inputs. Yet we cannot figure out ROI without knowing what the "I" is. If you take the time to do these calculations, your understanding of where you are in social media will be much more clear.
Expion.com will have the replay of the webinar soon, so check them out!

In your marketing department, are you asking the exact wrong question?
I recently got an interesting question from an attendee at one of the events I was speaking at. I was asked, "What companies like ours are doing this kind of marketing?"
If you always seek inspiration from others or need to see case studies to prove that something works, you're doing it wrong. Instead of being sure that something has worked in the past, why not try asking yourself, "What would our customers genuinely love?" What would make them excited about receiving your marketing materials?
If all you care about is averages, then you'll never be anything other than an average marketer.

Are you cutting off your nose to spite your face?
I'm coming to you from Orlando, FL, where the feeling of Disney World roams wild. And I noticed that one of the things Disney has implemented is a technology system that measures how many refills you get on the soda you bought. Using a microchip on the bottom of the cup and a video screen above that displays how many refills you have left.
This reminded me of a case study that I did for Youtility on Holiday World. At Holiday World, you get soda for free. It's true: You can free drink soda until you pass out at Holiday World.
There are a lot of differences between Holiday World and Disney World, of course, but how much do you think this fancy soda measurement cost to implement? And it is really helping their bottom line or their customers?
Sometimes I wonder if we don't actually cause ourselves more harm than good. And maybe we could do without microchips in our soda cups.

I get the same question over and over at the many, many events that I speak at each year. People are always wondering how they can possibly create all this content around what they're doing without having someone steal their "secret sauce."
And I tell them the same thing every time:
The sauce that you think is secret isn't actually secret.
Your competitors already know what you're doing and how you're doing it. And your potential clients or prospects aren't going to steal your thunder just by reading a blog post or another piece of content that you've created.
Just because you have a list of ingredients, it doesn't mean that you're a chef.
Stop worrying about giving away information and just give away information that your customers and clients want. It will work.

If you were given the choice to log into websites with your email address or your phone number, which would you choose?
Twitter has announced a new platform called Digits, which allows you to log in to any application the Twitter powers with your mobile phone number and password. McDonald's is an early partner of this program and is allowing users to download coupons using their phone numbers and without downloading any special application or software. Pretty neat.
In addition to the ease of use, it's possible that using phone numbers will allow us to be a little more careful with our logins as opposed to email addresses, which we throw around all the time to sign up for things.
But what do you think? Is the phone number too personal? Which would you prefer?

I had an interesting interaction in Kansas City with the Budget rental car company. I am a Budget Fast Break member, which means that I get to reserve my car in advance and then arrive to the location with a car waiting for me.
In this situation however, I arrived to my space and there was no car.
The woman in the office told me they were sold out and all they had available was a mini van. And it bothered me because what's the point of my Fast Break membership if there's no car available for me?
The situation wouldn't have been so unpleasant if she had said the two magic words of business:
"I'm sorry."
If you can teach everyone in your company to be sorry when things go wrong, or at least say sorry even if it wasn't your fault, people will respond more favorably to your overall business, especially in sticky situations.

The problem with Google isn't revenue or growth. Google is a victim of our own expectations.
People are freaking out because Google's growth rate has slowed. That's true, but let's be realistic – their growth rate is currently at 17%, which is still crazy.
When you've reach ubiquity, growth WILL slow. That's just math. The same thing has happened to Facebook. And now that Facebook is starting to implement some of the services that Google offers, they will likely take a piece of Google's revenue. But Google's model is changing and not everyone is necessarily on board. At this point, this is an expectation problem on our end, not a company problem with Google.

What if you found a way to build extreme trust BEFORE you ever interacted with a customer?
After a recent event, I was approached by an attendee who runs his own dental practice. He told me about an amazing program that he runs at his office. Every Friday, he is given a call sheet of all the people who are coming in the following week and are new to the practice. He calls these patients over the weekend and asks them if they have any questions before they come in.
This blows the minds of his new patients because doctors don't normally do this. And it builds immediate trust among the patients because they feel like this doctor is looking out for them and genuinely cares about their needs.
How can we do the same things in our businesses? I can guarantee that there are more things that we can do to build trust among our prospects before we ever sell to them.
How are you building trust before the transaction?

How you treat people is up to you, not up to your circumstances.
I recently had the chance to meet and interview Ron Howard, who is extremely humble and kind. I was a little surprised because of his massive success. But it got me thinking – why wouldn't he be?
Similarly, I was told several times over the last couple of weeks from conference directors and events coordinators that they were impressed that I was so approachable. Yes, things are going pretty well in Jay Baer Land, but success doesn't give me the right to be a jerk. And being successful doesn't have to equal being inaccessible.
Think about it: Just because you're doing well doesn't mean you should treat people any differently. People notice whether or not your approachable. And it's you're responsibility to make that decision.

Are you prepared for the new era of three-way digital marketing?
While organic reach continues to decline, now is the time to incorporate paid social media and paid search into your overall digital marketing strategy.
And, because of the influence that search has over social media and vice versa, I predict that the "social media team" will turn into simply the marketing team, overseeing social, content, and search including both paid and organic elements. It's more important than ever for your team to understand all aspects of these digital marketing tactics, so take the time to train them now.

Delta recently sent me an email telling me that in order to keep the same frequent flyer rewards, I have to spend more money. They said, "If everyone is a frequent flyer, no one is a frequent flyer."
Really, Delta? You couldn't just tell me that your costs are going up and that you need to change the structure of your program? Instead you had to come up with some story about how frequent flyers and non-frequent flyers can't be in the same tier? This is bad form, and I think Delta is losing a lot of trust from its loyal customers by doing this.
When you wrap up your information in a load of crap, your customers will trust you less, not more, so don't underestimate them. They're smarter than you think.

Newsflash: Visuals matter.
I would even venture to say that visuals matter more than words. Because if you don't have a great visual, people aren't going to click through to read those words that are so important to you.
And it's not just any visual - it's high-quality visuals. Adding a stock photo to your content isn't going to be what gets your content read. It needs to be good-looking and compelling. If your featured images suck, it doesn't say much about you and your content.
Furthermore, your visuals must work on mobile, because more and more people are consuming and sharing content through those handheld tiny screens.
If you're not working to create better visuals to market yourself, it's time to start.

Wondering what people think about your products or services?
Why not ask your customers?
A few recent examples reminded me how valuable this is. From a restaurant offering a discount for providing feedback to an app that asked for testimonials in exchange for free prizes, these kinds of questions can provide you with invaluable information about your company.
It's not your customers' responsibility provide you with their reviews. It's your responsibility to ask.

Are you doing things in your business just for the sake of doing it? Because it's always been done that way? There are many, many things in hotel rooms, for example, that are there because they've always been there. But I never use them. Why not put things in hotel rooms that people actually use or save the money from worthless things to upgrade the rooms or lower the room rates? Think about whether the things that you do and the things that you are offering are actually useful for your team or your customers. Every time someone complains on social media (or any other channel), it's not because of social media. It's not even a customer service issue. It's almost always a hiring problem, a training problem, or a management problem. It's because a person at your company did not do their job adequately. While you should always answer the complaint as soon as possible, don't forget to dig deeper. Is this the beginning of the end of celebrity culture in America? It has been a tough week for celebrities, including backlash against athletes like Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, plus musicians like U2 and Robin Thicke. But the one issue that is making me crazy right now is what happened with Rihanna and her spot that was pulled from CBS (http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/16/showbiz/tv/rihanna-cbs-thursday-night-football/). CBS, who thought they were doing the right thing by removing a song that was performed by a woman who was a victim herself of domestic violence, was slammed by Rihanna. Clearly, she believes more in selling records than supporting the fight against domestic violence. It's time for a values check. These celebrities are standing in the spotlight, making bad decisions, and sending the wrong message to our kids. Businesses must consider this when choosing whether to work with valued consumers, who already love your business, and potential "influencers", whom you'll have to persuade to love your business. Stop running your company as if you are going to recruit Rihanna to support it. SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/jaybaer00

Times have changed, and the traditional method of walking by a store to see what they have is becoming obsolete. Instead, potential buyers are educating themselves on what your company has to offer before they ever pick up a phone, send a contact form, or click a button. As a result, you must offer as much information as possible on your website so that there is no confusion about whether your products or services are right for your audience. If a prospect has to pick up the phone to find out the answer to a question about their product, you're doing it wrong.

There are 2 marketing trends that we can glean from a pine tree:
1) Marketing sideways: It's not always about your products and services. Sometimes, it's taking something that would be useful to your customers and giving it to them to offer additional value. This pine tree, for example, was provided to a friend by their real estate company to make their yard more beautiful.
2) Small business: In addition to a free pine tree, the real estate company offered $1,000 off the next real estate purchase. This is a great way to create loyal customers, especially for smaller businesses that can offer that personal touch.
Speaking of real estate, my new ebook, Youtility for Real Estate, is now available for pre-order here: http://www.amazon.com/Youtility-Real-Estate-Professionals-Specialfrom-ebook/dp/B00MNNAOPS

After an experience in a hotel with the famous Sleep Number bed, I realized that having the option to choose my sleep number when I wasn't familiar with it wasn't easier for me - it was harder.
And this same paradox of choice plagues businesses just as much as it plagues travelers. If you offer too many choices, people will get lost and give up. I see this most commonly on business websites, where multiple links, navigation bars, and color schemes take away from what exactly the company wants me to do on their site.
Remember only include options on your website that either drive a specific behavior or lead someone directly and consistently to your desired funnel.

THE SHOW
Hubspot recently announced their IPO, which raised a lot of questions among marketers and business people alike.
Tom Webster, a fantastic research and analytics guy at Edison Research, wrote a blog post for Convince & Convert about the IPO that sparked a huge discussion (http://www.convinceandconvert.com/digital-marketing/is-inbound-marketing-actually-profitable-or-just-a-slogan/).
Brian Clark was one part of the discussion, and he brought up his opinion which was that at the end of the day, the product itself matters more than the marketing.
Ultimately, marketing is dependent on the entire company. If your company's products or services aren't great, the marketing team won't be appreciated, even if they're doing great work. Likewise, great companies with great products have marketers that are often overappreciated and overrated because they make the team that is already good look great.
At the end of the day, there is only so much marketers can do, and it's important to take a team approach to business and marketing for success.

THE SHOW
A recent statistic showed that 80% of the average American's time online is spent on 15 websites or fewer.
It's likely the same scenario for the way Americans shop and watch TV - we choose our favorite 5-15 places or channels to spend our time.
This is extremely important for marketers because while you should focus some of your efforts on your own website content, you should focus more of them on the other websites and channels out there that your audience is already visiting such as Facebook, Youtube, Slideshare, and more.
Think of your content marketing as a digital dandelion - your website is the stalk and the other networks and channels are the seeds. The magic of successful content marketing really lies in the seeds, because your website will never be one of the 15 websites that the average American spends most of their time.

We're all about finding new ways to be helpful to fans and customers instead of always trying to sell to them, and these two new examples of Youtility will knock your socks off.
During a recent trip to Arizona, Jay heard an awesome commercial on the radio about a car dealer who bought a band for one of its Facebook fan's wedding. The Valley Honda Dealers participate in what they call "Random Acts of Helpfulness," and this radio commercial showcased their helpful nature, not their car promotions. While we're not sure what the outcome was in terms of ROI, that is one helpful treat that this fan will never forget.
Another great example of Youtility is one that can actually save lives. A couple of college students developed a nail polish that people can use to help detect the presence of date-rape drugs in their drinks. Learn more: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/nail-polish-may-help-detect-date-rape-drugs/

Facebook has released some new information that is important for marketers to note.
Now, if you post something on Facebook that people click on but then click right back to Facebook, that shows Facebook that the quality of that link or article isn't great, so Facebook will devalue it and not show it in the newsfeed.
Google has been doing this for many years, and it's one of the ways they rank ads. Facebook has adopted this technology, which is great for all of us because it will help remove spam and those famous click-baiting articles.
The second thing that Facebook has done is that it is putting more emphasis on showing links instead of images.
What does this mean for you?
Be sure to build landing pages and share articles that are relevant and effective to your audience.
Make sure anything you're linking to has a good signature image and coherent description so that when you add a link to Facebook, it pulls in quality information.

Jay has recently started using the LinkedIn Publishing platform to repurpose popular blog posts, and even transcriptions of the Jay Today show, to reach new audiences.
But a strange thing has happened since publishing - tons of new connection requests that Jay doesn't know are flooding into his inbox.
LinkedIn always seemed different than other networks in that it was about connecting with people that you know IRL, whereas Twitter and Google+ are more public "follow" networks where it's about making new connections. The great thing about LinkedIn has been that there is less noise and more great content from people we know.
But maybe we're using LinkedIn all wrong. What do you think?

If you haven't seen your friends douse themselves in ice to support ALS research yet, you're probably living under a rock.
The ALS Ice Bucket challenge has raised over $13.3 million (compared to $1.7 million last year) and has over 260,000 new donors.
Why is the ice bucket challenge so effective? 2 reasons:
1) It plays on the power of video, which is much more visceral and experiential than text or photo could ever be.
2) It happened concurrently with the new Facebook update that now allows videos to autoplay in your news feed.
The other important reason this challenge has succeeded is that it wasn't ALS who asked people to dump ice on their heads, it's friends. And while we may not all have a personal connection to ALS, we do have personal connections to our colleagues and friends so we want to support the cause in their honor.
This is a lesson that all businesses, not just non-profits can learn from: Social media is about people, not logos, and it's the individual connectivity that makes campaigns successful.

During a recent trip to NYC, Jay visited two businesses that are thriving from innovation: Nike and Breather.
Nike is the better-known of the two, and they continue to create comfortable, fashionable, and innovative products that their audience wants. Breather is a lesser-known company that is providing quiet, comfortable spaces around the world for travelers like Jay and locals alike.
Both companies have one thing in common: They innovate from a point of strength, not desperation. When things are going poorly, that's the time to focus on making your current offerings better, not trying something new. When things are going well, however, that's the time to take your imagination to the next level.

In working with a local university, Jay learned that the tactics they used to engage their audiences was different than many of the other companies he's worked with. Instead of saying, "Do you like this or that?" or, "Like us on Facebook!", this university simply said, "Tell us what you think."
This open-ended request for opinions allows their audience to share, candidly, exactly how they feel about anything the organization is doing - both good and bad. This creates the feeling of trust and kinship, which psychologically builds a lasting bond between the customers and the business. It's also why crowdsourcing works so well.
Try using the power of crowds to build your own business, and let us know how it works for you.

Jay recently went to the PGA Tour in Valhalla. Prior to attending, he sent a tweet to the PGA asking about umbrella size and parking lot location. He has yet to hear back from them.
This brings up an interesting question of consumer expectations when it comes to social media customer service. Are we reaching a tipping point where people have the same expectations of social media service as they do of phone calls? If so, companies need to be prepared with the resources and strategy to handle it.

Your life is never going as well as you think it is, but it's also never going as poorly as you think it is. The way to keep yourself off the roller coaster ride of emotions that make up life is to never fly too high or too low when something happens. The problem with social media metrics is that people think it's just about likes and fans. And that these numbers stand alone.
If you want to know what value social media is providing, you have to do the work. Insights always require effort, and it's important to remember that the goal is not to be good at social media, it's to be good at business as a result of social media.
We have too many metrics, so it can be difficult to pull out the ones that matter. Consider using metrics like lead generation, sales, net promoter score, propensity to order, and other business metrics as opposed to new likes and retweets.

Back in the day before email and smartphones, it was common for people to stop working and leave the office at 5pm.
Now, we are all constantly connected to our work and our time has become scarce. This creates a common issue that marketers struggle to overcome: My customers don't have time for me.
That may be true on the surface, but if you want to break through and steal some time or borrow some attention from your potential customers and client, you need to give them something that is hyper-relevant.
An example of this hyper-relevant messaging comes from a Guatemalan sneaker company, Meat Pack. By installing their mobile app, sneaker fans can get the best deals on hot new items. The app, which includes a GPS locator, has been successful in pulling customers away from competitors and generating buzz (http://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/campaigns/meat-pack-hijack.html).

Facebook has just launched a new app that will remove the messaging functionality from its primary app and include it instead in a stand-alone messaging app. While some users are frustrated with having to download yet another app (Facebook already has 8 apps), this is the trend we're seeing - specialized applications for specific functionalities.
Facebook isn't the only one adopting this trend. Giant superstores like Walmart and Target are seeing a decline in sales, while smaller boutique shops are growing.
This is the future. People no longer want portals that include everything but are great at nothing, especially when they're using their mobile device as their primary connection to the internet. They want specialized services for their specific needs.

A recent article about Nintendo showed that sometimes when a company has a smash hit with their products or services, it may actually be the beginning of the end.
In today's episode, Jay explores why the NFL might be going through the same "last blockbuster" issue that Nintendo is for five main reasons:
Attending a game isn't as family-friendly or enjoyable as watching from home
The NFL is saturating us with too many games on TV
Their drug policy is ridiculous
Their concussion policy is insane
They lack a respectable discipline policy with players
Tune in to hear Jay's take on the specifics of these very real issues.

The TSA (transportation security administration) has announced a new crowdsourcing campaign whereby they will look to the public to come up with ideas to make the TSA lines shorter.
The idea on its own isn't a terrible one, but after doing some digging, it turns out that it's not about making lines shorter, it's about getting people to sign up for the TSA Pre-Check program and pay what it takes to get there. That's not a technology issue for the masses to solve, that's an issue for a marketing person or team within the TSA to tackle. And it's extremely frustrating for someone who travels as much as Jay does.
The problems that the TSA are having with line length and the time it takes to get through security transcend any sort of crowdsourcing campaign the TSA could implement.

People often ask Jay why he does so many different things. Between the Convince & Convert blog, the Social Pros podcast, and the new Jay Today show, Jay always has a lot of irons in the fire.
The reason for this is that technology is always changing, as are people's wants, needs, and desires. By wearing many hats and working on many different projects, there is a the element of research and experimentation that helps us understand which things will work best.
This is how Jay approaches business as well. While we may not always have the answer for clients and prospects on what WILL work, we do know HOW to do the work to get there. Knowledge is overrated. Research is underrated.

Now that Jay's children are both officially teenagers, the future of social media is becoming more and more apparent.
While marketers have been using technology to build up an audience, study their needs, and reach them all at once, teens are using social media to have a conversation with a small number of people. For them, it's not about the audience, it's about the personal communication. The future of social media is all about using a phone book, not an auditorium.

Did you know that Weird Al's new album, Mandatory Fun, is the number one album in the U.S. right now?
Weird Al has always been, well, weird, but the masses haven't caught on to what he's doing... until now.
So, what changed? Weird Al did three things right with the launch of this new album that we can all learn from:
He leveraged the power of video by releasing an accompanying music video with each song.
He hasn't strayed from his wild ways, which in this age of absurdity is extremely relevant.
He atomized his content by releasing one song per day, instead of releasing them all at once.
If you're a grammar nerd, you'll love this song called Word Crimes (parody of Blurred Lines): http://www.vevo.com/watch/weird-al-yankovic/word-crimes/USRV81400343

This is the "silver lining" episode of Jay Today and is brought to you by what could have been a travel nightmare.
Jay is coming to you today from a hotel in Delaware, where he got stuck overnight due to a cancelled flight. Instead of panicking, Jay used his airline app to re-book the flight, his hotel app to find a nearby hotel, and his Uber app to get there.
He was prepared for a crisis.
And there's no reason why your company shouldn't be prepared as well. Crises WILL happen whether you're prepared or not. If you don't have a crisis communications plan in place today, it's imperative to work on that immediately. Your future reputation (and customers) will thank you.
Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to Corey Perlman (http://twitter.com/coreyperlman), whose new book Social Media Overload is number one in social media on Amazon.com right now. Great work, Corey! You can learn more about the book, which Jay contributed a chapter to, at socialmediaoverload.com.
It's more than likely that you promote blog posts, about pages, testimonials, product pages, and the like to your social networks. You're not exclusively driving traffic to your homepage.
As a result, it's possible that less than 50% of your website visitors are landing on your homepage with they first come to your site, which means that every page on your site is a homepage.
Don't leave all the important information about your company on your homepage. Sprinkle it about your website, and make sure the most important information is on every page, especially the ones you are driving traffic to.
Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to Scott Monty who recently left his position at Ford Motor Company to join SHIFT Communications as SVP of Strategy (http://www.shiftcomm.com/2014/07/big-news-scott-monty-joins-shift/). Congratulations Scott and team!

Google Plus has announced that it will allow aliases and pseudonyms, removing the requirement that users sign up for the service with their real names (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2460945,00.asp).
This is a dangerous game for Google as it has the potential of making the service into a Myspace-esque trap of fake identities and inauthentic personalities. Does this switch mark the beginning of the end for Google Plus?
Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to Martin Shervington (http://twitter.com/martinsherv), who runs a company called Plus Your Business (http://www.plusyourbusiness.com/). Martin is a Google Plus expert (and a great guy!) who has helped Jay and many other businesses boost their strategies on G+.

This episode of Jay Today comes to you from the Social Fresh conference (http://socialfresh.com). Laurie Meacham of Jetblue spoke at the conference about her experiences leading social media for the popular airline. She told an interesting story about a tweet that referenced the old Oregon Trail game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oregon_Trail_(computer_game)). Instead of saying a generic "thank you," Jetblue came back with a fun and relevant reply that truly impressed their passenger (https://twitter.com/JetBlue/status/258938937698054145).
Changing the way we interact and respond to the people who are watching us gives us a chance to make a lifelong customer (or personal friend).

According to a new study by Accenture, 35% of CMOs say that mobile will be 50% or more of their budget within five years.
This is truly amazing and goes to show that leaders understand the power that mobile has now and will have going forward.
It's important to remember that just because you have a following in one place, such as your blog or social media channels, doesn't mean you've got it made. People's tastes and needs change, and now is the time to start adopting other outlets, such as mobile and video, for your content.
You can't keep the Zoolander "blue steel" look forever.
Speaking of mobile, today's Sprout Social shout out goes to Tim Hayden, one of the foremost mobile marketers in the United States. Pay attention to Tim and his predictions for the future of mobile by following him on Twitter (https://twitter.com/thetimhayden) and check out his new company - TTH Strategy (http://tthstrategy.com/).

Trust is the foundation of every successful relationship - business and personal. And it's something that not all businesses truly understand.
Today's story comes from Joe Manausa, a real estate agent that Jay interviewed for Youtility for Real Estate (coming out this fall). Joe is a real estate agent, but has offered a free ebook on how to sell your home on your own.
It may seem counterintuitive at first, but showing people all the reasons NOT to hire you by providing free information is the perfect way to get them TO hire you. Get the ebook here: http://manausa.com/downloads/how-to-sell-a-home-on-your-own-2/

A fellow marketer asked me an interesting question recently -
How do you get your boss to agree to go all in on content?
My advice? Don't.
It's easy to forget that the primary goal is not to be good at content marketing. The goal is to be good at business as a result of your content. Think about what you want your business goals to be and translate those into a language your boss can understand - dollars and cents, not clicks and conversion rates.

Gone are the days when being locked into one specific carrier was a make-or-break in terms of your mobile phone decisions. Now, it's all about the hardware.
The next age of smartphones will not only control your contacts, email, and media, they will also control your car, your house, your appliances... your entire life.
If you're thinking of switching phones, now is the time to do it. Once you're locked in to a certain piece of hardware, switching will become extremely painful.

Blogging is the hub of your media company. And it's no longer enough to have a "good" blog or even a consistent blog.
Instead, your ultimate goal is to create a blog that is someone's favorite blog on the planet. Unless you're someone's favorite blogger, you'll never truly succeed.
Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to Rory Vaden -- one of the best speakers in the world. His latest book, Take the Stairs, is the perfect book if you're anything like me - always busy. Jimmy Graham, a professional football player for the New Orleans Saints, is up for salary arbitration. Why, you ask? Because Jimmy is typically lined up as a tight end, even though he's actually a wide receiver. The judge recently ruled against Graham, partly because his Twitter bio says he's a tight end for the Saints.
This is extremely interesting because what you say about yourself matters. Are you really putting your best foot forward on your social media bios? Perhaps it's time to re-evaluate your persona online.
Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to Mark W. Schaefer, who recently published a fantastic Slideshare presentation called Engagement is Not a Social Media Strategy.

News flash: There is no secret sauce when it comes to gaining customers.
And you can't always convince people to pay for your products and services - that's not the way modern business works. Instead, you have to give away everything you know. This requires both patience and courage to make sure you're doing things the right way.
Today's Sprout Social shout out goes out to Jeff Rohrs of ExactTarget and co-host of Social Pros. We're so proud of him because his book, Audience: Marketing in the Age of Subscribers, Fans, and Followers, was named one of the 25 books that marketers and CMOs are reading this year.

If everybody wants to use Facebook, every other service should change their offerings to be just like Facebook. Right?
Wrong.
Jay Baer examines Twitter's design and functionality changes that are making it look more and more like Facebook and why that's not a great strategy for long-term success.
Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to a good friend, Sally Hogshead. Her new book, How the World Sees You takes an almost scary look at you personality, strengths, weakness, and how you can use all of them to your advantage. We encourage you to check it out today, you'll be glad you did.

In the inaugural episode of Jay Today, Jay Baer discusses Facebook's recent News Feed experiments. While they might seem interesting from a marketing perspective, experimenting with human emotion has a much bigger implication on Facebook's reputation and the trust it has built among its community for the last 10 years.
Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to John Jantsch, whose new book Duct Tape Selling will change the way you think about turning your audience into customers forever.
