There are 3 things you need to do to be able to write off as much of your life as possible so you pay the least in taxes…

It comes from the mindset shift that each expense you spend money on is an investment to a particular part of your life & business that will yield a return (known as ROI – or “return on investment”).
Consider the example of the write-off category Professional Development (also known as Continuing Education). You could be bummed you have to spend money learning something new, or you could choose the perspective:
“My work maintains my quest for knowledge and what I learn grounds me deeper into my purpose so I can serve better.”
It feels awesome to know you’re feeding things that matter to you with your money.

The tax world can be more than a little confusing, but empowering yourself with the basic lingo of how it all works goes a long way to feeling confident as a biz owner.
One of the biggies I often explained to clients when I was a tax preparer that may be helpful for you is understanding the difference between credits & write-offs…
But first, let’s set the context for this understanding…
Revenue (minus) Expenses (equals) Profit.
Profit (also known as net income) is the amount you are taxed on.
Based on your tax bracket, you owe a portion of your Profit in taxes.
Ok, now that we got that out of the way, let’s look at the difference between write-offs & credits…
🧮 A Write-off is an Expense that gets subtracted from your Revenue to figure your Profit. In other words, it reduces the amount you will be taxed on.
💵 A Credit is an amount that gets subtracted from the actually tax amount you owe. In other words, it makes a much bigger dent in the amount you owe.
Your tax preparer knows about fancy credits you may be eligible for, so leave those to them.
But YOU know what you spent money on during the year that may be used as a write-off.
All you need is the list of eligible expenses so you don’t miss a thing.

If you are not a tax professional, you don’t know about all the things that could benefit you. Your tax preparer does because it’s their job to know about all the things. The money you pay your tax preparer is nothing compared to the money you will have to pay because you missed out on legal loopholes & credits you don’t know about.
4️⃣ The tax world is a changing maze of complexity.
The tax rules are many, and confusing AF. Honestly, it was my gig for a long time & it even makes my head spin. On top of that, it’s always changing. It’s a big undertaking to keep up with it all – one that doesn’t make sense unless it is your profession to do so. Now that I’m not a tax preparer anymore, I won’t be doing my own taxes anymore either.

There are legal ways to get crafty with your tax returns to meet your goals. Here’s what I mean…
When you’re self-employed, your “proof of income” is your net income (aka profit after write-offs) as it appears on your tax return. And there are ways your tax preparer can legally make that number more or less.
📈 An example of when you would want to show more is when you’re preparing to buy a house. You’ll want that number to be big to increase the loan amount you can qualify to receive.
📉 An example of when you would want to show less is when you’re near the threshold of qualifying for free health insurance or other benefits. You’ll want to be able to reduce that number to qualify.
It’s also important to know how many years of tax returns you will need to show. Home loans typically require 2 years. Most other things – like car loans, rental leases, an benefits – will only need to see the most recent year.
So how is this done?
It’s definitely beyond the scope of a social media post, but suffice it to say tax preparers have many strategic tricks up their sleeves to play within the rules to move things around to make that number change to meet your needs.
Your job is to keep track of your income & expenses. Your tax preparer’s job is to work their magic to translate your situation into a version of your tax return that can hopefully help you achieve your goals.
Or if not, they can advise you on specific changes you need to make to meet your goals as soon as possible.

You may not know I used to do taxes because my Dad was a CPA. One of the things he always used to say in response to client concerns is “every year stands on its own.”
Let’s look at what this means & why it matters…
Many new clients that came to me to file expressed concern that if they suddenly filed now after having neglected doing so for years, they would get on the IRS’ radar & raise red flags about their past.
This isn’t actually a concern because “every year stands on its own.”
You should stay current with your tax filings. That said, if you’re behind and you catch up by filing for the most recent year, they’re not going to come knocking on your door for missing years.
There are other reasons they may follow up with you about missing years, but filing one year is not a cause to ask about another.
The IRS is a business. As a business, they decide what to use manpower for to pursue. They decide based on what will get them paid. And so, they may reach out to collect if they received an income form for a year without a tax return.
You can always go back and file missing years after getting caught up now with the recent one.
I offer this reassurance because if this is you – someone who has neglected to stay current with your tax filings to date – DO NOT let this be a reason to continue avoiding them.

One of the myths I debunked often as a tax preparer is the idea that you need an LLC to have a legit business. It was all too common to advise clients to dissolve them.
Here are 4 things you may not know about it…
1️⃣ Sole Proprietorships are the best place to start.
At the federal level, an LLC & Sole Prop are one & the same. Both put your biz on a Schedule C on your tax return. Both calculate what you will owe in taxes the same way. But Sole Props are simpler. And they do just fine until you get to a point where you’re profiting $60-100k.
2️⃣ LLCs don’t necessarily protect you.
The C stands for Company (not Corporation) & LLCs don’t offer the guaranteed protection of your personal assets people think they do. Only corporations can do that. As a business owner, you should get business insurance. That will protect you if sh*t hits the fan.
3️⃣ LLCs can be more complicated & expensive.
This is especially the case in California – where I live – where we have to pay $800 a year just to have one. We also have to file a separate state return. Not every state is the same – and CA is the most expensive I’ve come across – but this is a good reason not to jump the gun on an LLC.
4️⃣ Let opening an LLC be a rite of passage.
There are many steps to take on your business journey to continue to legitimize your business entity as you grow. I recommend waiting to form an LLC when your budding business really becomes something, as a way to honor its growth into a new stage of maturity when the time feels right. I do not recommend forming an LLC as a way to start a new business venture (in most cases).

As a former tax preparer, one of my major roles was helping dissolve the fears new clients showed up with – and the biggest was fear of the IRS.
Here are 3 things you need to know to delete that once & for all…
1️⃣ You’re not going to jail.
The fear of getting in trouble for doing something wrong with the IRS is common. It’s also vague and daunting for many.
The truth is whether you’re behind or you haven’t been keeping great records so you may have made mistakes – honestly almost whatever the case may be – the consequences you may face are monetary (not criminal). AKA, you may end up paying them more money. That’s it.
I say almost because there are rare exceptions. But to put you at ease, I like to use the example of Al Capone – a big deal criminal that they couldn’t get on criminal charges, so they got him on tax evasion instead. If you are not Al Capone criminal status, you should be fine.
2️⃣ The IRS is disorganized AF.
Holy wow are they disorganized. The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing, they are tragically behind the times, and they make mistakes ALL THE TIME. The point is they are not the scary well-oiled machine you may imagine them to be. If you knew the extent of their incompetence, your fear would turn to pity. Just imagine them barely holding it together, because that’s much closer to the truth than anything scary you can imagine.
3️⃣ They won’t put you on the spot.
The IRS would never call you. If that happens, it’s a scam. Any issue they have will be addressed via snail mail. You will have plenty of time to consult your tax professional, sleep on it, and prepare a response. In most cases if you ask nicely, you can even have more time. So know any interaction you have with them will come with the spaciousness to chill.

Let’s look at the roles of natural and calendar time in a well-crafted yearly flow…
☸️ The natural wheel of the year is a trip around the Sun, broken up by the 4 seasons. And the seasons are broken up by the zodiac-themed phases the Sun moves through.
This natural (astrological) flow mirrors your flow of energy. It’s a great way to understand how your energy ebbs & flows throughout the year, to know yourself from the inside out.
Anything you do in your business needs to support the flow of your optimal inner world, so this is the timing to use to ground your boundaries & availability for sustainability.
Example: Winter for most is a time of feeling more inward, as well as a time when the holiday season demands a lot of us. Knowing this is helpful when planning your business year.
🗓️ The calendar year is the man-made version, broken up by 4 quarters of 3 months each.
For most this is also your fiscal year – aka, the calendar years you report on your tax return – so it’s a great way to map your business tasks and goals.
Your business maintenance and planning needs to align with your inner world & home needs, and the traditional calendar is the perfect timing to use to plan your outer world biz schedule.
Example: If winter is a time you feel more inward & less available, contrary to the world’s New Year blast off, you may want to plan for Q1 to be a time of backend shifts to prepare for a big launch in Q2.
The idea is to begin with the seasons to track where you’re at so you can plan a quarterly flow for your business that aligns with your needs.

Understanding the difference between revenue, profit, and wealth is a pre-req to money savv & scaling.
Gurus in the online space throw numbers around as selling points all the time, but it’s not always clear what they’re actually referring to.
Let’s break it down…
🤲🏼 REVENUE ~ this is what you actually receive.
You’ll hear this amount referred to as “cash months.” It’s also known as gross income. It’s the amount you bring in – before any expenses go out – so it’s not really a worthy metric of comparison to others in your space.
Example: Someone could have a 60k cash month, but have 50k in expenses that month, so they really only made 10k, which brings us to…
💵 PROFIT ~ this is what’s left over after you pay your business expenses.
Most people don’t talk about this amount, except with their tax person. This is the amount you’re taxed on – after you write off your expenses – also known as net income. It’s also what is available to pay your personal & household expenses, and invest in anything else.
Example: Let’s say your profit from the last example is 10k for the month, but your personal & home expenses are 7k. That leaves you with 3k to work with to generate…
💰 WEALTH ~ this is money put into investment assets so it can grow (appreciate).
This can look so many different ways. However you slice it, it’s the bigger picture purpose for getting savvy with your money. It’s how you get your money to work for you. It’s how you amplify your currency beyond trading your time for money. It’s how to leverage your money over time.
Examples: Stocks/bonds, crypto/NFTs, precious metals, real estate, angel investing, etc.
What’s important is that wherever you’re at, you’re keeping your eye on all of these. Know your revenue, profit, and wealth goals – independently of each other – so you can grow inside of a bigger picture of aimed success. 🚀

There are many angles of natural phenomena we encounter on our paths of education as humans growing businesses. This is the part that makes being a biz owner a wild ride of personal development.
And on the legal law side of business, you are required to be in compliance.
There are things you are responsible for – such as keeping regular records, filing annual tax returns, maintaining relevant licensing, etc.
Fortunately, there’s not as many of these as you might think, and once you get properly educated on the scope of them, the opportunity opens to get crafty in how you integrate them into your strategy.

⚡ ENERGETIC leaks ~ these are beliefs that keep you from aligning with ascending abundance. These are the thoughts that circulate through your mind that lie to you about your worth & capacity. These are sneaky and come from habits of mind designed to keep you small.

👛 MATERIAL leaks ~ these are the choices that drain your money. They are the habits themselves that sabotage you. These are the unconscious spending patterns that making it near impossible for you to get strategic and get ahead.

💧 subscriptions you don’t need, don’t use, or don’t even remember you have
💧 late fees and interest you have to pay for not being timely with your responsibilities
💧 paying too much in taxes because you’re not maximizing your write-offs
As a tax preparer, I saw a lot of both…
Since filing taxes is a time to take an intimate look at your money situation (the only time for some), the damning beliefs were shared like confessions.
And for those that avoid looking the rest of the year, this often meant discovering payments they didn’t know they were still making, getting charged late fees for being behind, having to setup payment plans with steep penalties & interest, and paying too much in taxes because they didn’t keep good records.

Here’s the up & downsides of each element when it comes to our relationship with money:
🌊🔽 The downside of water is the heaviness of feeling that can come with avoidance to money matters, distancing us from our powerful rite to success.
🌊🔼 The upside of water is being able to deliberately channel the feels that connect you with your desires to call in the abundance to fund them.
🔥🔽 The downside of fire is the power of impulse, which can mean neglecting your books in favor of more compelling tasks. It can also mean giving your all to get the excitement of a new earning level, and then falling off with your efforts after the honeymoon phase ends.

I know not everyone loves spreadsheets like I do (and I really do!) but there’s a couple non-negotiables to set a solid foundation to scale from…
1️⃣ You need one to keep track of your recurring expenses:
Before you can start to grow your profits to go bigger, you need to know and provide for whatever you are responsible for on the regular. This includes recurring expenses for your business and personal spheres. This is bedrock to any other money matter you choose to put your attention on as a business owner.
PRO TIP: I have a spreadsheet that keeps track of my regular expenses for my business, myself, and my home – so I can always know the bare minimum I need to bring in to cover them. This can all be on one spreadsheet with different tabs for easy access.
2️⃣ You also need one to keep track of basically everything else:
We’re talking SOPs (standard operating procedures). This basically serves as a table of contents for every template, resource, and task list that makes your business flow. Having everything all in one place so you don’t have to go looking for things when you need them saves SO MUCH time you can’t afford to waste in the wrong places.
PRO TIP: Besides that the organization of SOPs is a huge time saver and creates a lovely sense of cohesion, it also prepares you to be able to delegate tasks to a team, which is the path to really scaling.

Here are 3 “wing it” strategies that stop feeling right after Saturn returns:
1️⃣ “I’ll just flow with my time so my intuition can lead”
Father time comes to remind us that time is precious & limited. If you’re committed to your success in business, it’s time to schedule your flow of time… which can totally include down time! Saturn invites you to plan, project, and prioritize. This is how we can start to master our timing.
2️⃣ “I’ll just find my way through tasks in whatever way feels right”
While reinventing the wheel every time we turn it is totally an option, it takes A LOT of mental energy to do so. This is where SOPs (standard operating procedures) come in… they are how we template our processes so they can be no brainers. SOPs can still evolve with you. And they pave the way for a well-functioning team!
3️⃣ “I’ll just figure out my numbers when I file my taxes”
Saturn wants you to get serious about your business by treating its lifeline like the pulse of your progress… because it is! Knowing your numbers is more than just a tax time task. Your money flow is full of information to help you make better choices. And staying present to your currency is how you scale!
The good news is that while Saturn brings the not-so-comfy itch to step it up, he also brings an upgrade such that getting more dialed in these ways ends up feeling really good.

🫶 Pick the right spot ~ make it somewhere that relaxes you.
🫶 Wear what feels (& looks good) ~ dress like you’ll feel at the earning level you’re calling in.
🫶 Relax ~ take a few deep breaths before you begin.
🫶 Give thoughtful compliments ~ speak gratitude for what your money make possible.
🫶 Pay attention to your body language ~ nurture a relaxed, yet powerful posture.
🫶 Go with the flow ~ if something isn’t adding up right, let yourself shift gears.
🫶 Don’t avoid difficult topics ~ if anything bubbles up while you “should” be doing a task, let it… a big part of your money dates is to move through whatever may be in the way for you.

Ok this was fun to write, but for real… setting aside regular time to drop in with yourself and your money, making it a ritual, and embracing it like you would a date… is such a great way to wire yourself to have:

The biggest tangible tragedy I saw all the time as a tax preparer was this:
When self-employed people avoid their compliance - aka, tracking their money and filing their taxes - they put a cap on how much money they can make. 🤦🏻♀️
On the flip side, when you’re on top of your compliance, the sky’s the limit to scale your wealth.
Can you guess why this is?
The cause of this glass ceiling is FEAR.
Whether or not you’re consciously aware of it, it goes something like this…
“If I make too much money, I’ll get found out. I’ll get on their radar. They’ll see I’m not doing it right. I’ll get in trouble.”
The tragedy is that this causes you to stay small to stay “safe.”
The remedy is educating yourself on what it takes to be in compliance, committing to doing what is required (or delegating it), and getting it done… consistently.

There’s no right way to keep track of your income & expenses.
The only requirement is that you do keep track… consistently.
And for those that do, there are 2 camps of tracking: manually or AutoMagically.
And there is a time and a place for each.
Manual tracking of your money is great if you’re brand new to having a record-keeping practice because you’ve been avoiding it in your business.
This is for 2 reasons:
1️⃣ it’s helpful to be able to really get inside of the process to understand it
2️⃣ it’s a way to embrace the process without also having to learn new tech just yet
Eventually, AutoMagical (aka, automated) tracking of your money using a bookkeeping software becomes the better option.
This is for 3 reasons:
1️⃣ once you understand what’s going on and feel comfortable with the process, it just makes to set it on autopilot so you can focus on other things.
2️⃣ you have the option to easily delegate the oversight to a bookkeeper.
3️⃣ you can view your P&L (Profit & Loss Statement) in lots of different ways - monthly, quarterly, yearly, etc. - to be able to see your progress from every angle.
Either way, what matters is that you have a system in place that works for you, that is maintained regularly.

If we ruled the world, there wouldn’t be taxes, bc no one wants to have to give up any of their revenue toward a cause not in their control. That said, tax time doesn’t have to suck so hard if you get it together in these 2 ways:
📊 The first is to keep track of your income, expenses, mileage, and anything else you’ll need to file your taxes… IN REAL TIME. There’s a million reasons this is a good idea, but the biggie we’re looking at here is that if you don’t, it’s a FKN NIGHTMARE to have to remember, find, and piece together what you need for a whole year while the clock is ticking and your tax preparer is nagging you every other day. I don’t want this for you, and I don’t want it for your tax preparer (who is hopefully my five star referral… iykyk - if you don’t, ask!)
💰 The second is put some of the money you make aside to cover your tax liability… AS YOU MAKE IT. Whether you are required to make estimated quarterly payments or not, if you run a business, you should be setting aside a percentage of your earnings to cover your taxes. I don’t use “should” often, but this is one of those times. The heartache alternative that I saw way too often with clients, is finding out what you owe and having no money to pay it. If you’re a biz owner, this is bananas. You can either pay it forward like a smart cookie, or go into debt paying it backward. Trust me, it feels good to know you’ve got it.
Both of these smart money practices will make tax time feel easy breezy, and a time you actually look forward to, to close the year like a boss. 😎

There are many layers of depth to what it means to be “on it” when it comes to your business books, but there’s one thing that’s SO easy to do that will go a long way to set yourself up for ease when you get around to getting a solid system set up and getting it right…
That one thing is to have a separate bank account for your business income & expenses.
If you’re currently less than “on it” with your business books, don’t complicate this one thing.
It doesn’t matter if it’s technically a business account with your bank.
It doesn’t matter if you have an official business entity to connect it with.
It doesn’t matter if you have EIN, or a business license, or business name.
For this one thing, all that matters is that it’s SEPARATE from your personal money.
This is important for 2 reasons that your future self will thank you for:
1️⃣ If heaven forbid you ever get audited, it will look really bad to the IRS if you have to show them bank statements with both personal and business activity on them. And you don’t want to look bad to the IRS if you want to be on their good side. (You want to be on their good side.)
2️⃣ When the time comes to play catchup and categorize your YTD (year to date) activity to get current with your super sleek automated bookkeeping system (more to come on this later), you DO NOT want to have to sort through every transaction to figure out what is business.
I’ve helped many clients through the catchup game to get current, and the thing that is the most tedious and unnecessary that slows the whole process down is first having to separate everything one line at a time.
If you don’t already have 2 separate checking accounts for personal and business money, open a 2nd one. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.
And before you go to swipe or spend, ask yourself the quick question: “Is this personal or is this business?”
Then use the correct account.

While these feelings are valid, they are likely sourced in the fact that you weren’t taught to tend your money properly, so of course you feel some kind of way about falling short around it as a biz owner.
While technically my job description as a tax preparer was around tax preparation, a big part of what I actually did for new clients was to help ease the guilt and shame that came with the confession that they were either behind with their bookkeeping and tax filing, or had never done it before at all.
The weight they carried with this was debilitating. Maybe you can relate? It made them anxious whenever they thought about it, which caused them to continue avoiding it. It was a vicious cycle.
It was easy for me to offer reassurance, first of all because they had come to me to make a change, and that said everything about where they were at.
And second, because IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. You simply weren’t taught this, so you were set up to have to decide to start caring as an adult, and move through all the feels to do so.
And now that I’m no longer playing this role for tax clients, I get to shout it from the social rooftops so anyone that needs to hear this, can receive this reassurance…
Your feelings are valid, it’s not your fault, and beyond the feels, it’s actually really simple.
And with my background of living and breathing this stuff, I love to help you know and normalize it too.
