Episode 110:
Today we take a Feldenkrais approach to directing our attention.
This episode is the intro lesson to the new series The Focused Body: Attention Practices Through Feldenkrais where we will directly use subtle movements to strengthen our capacity for sustained concentration.
You will learn to deliberately shift your focus from narrow sensory detail to wide spatial awareness. By using your body as a reliable anchor, you will cultivate the quieter attention that empowers you to choose intention over impulse in daily life.
So in today’s episode, you will first hear a short introduction about how to approach working with your attention, and after that will be a 60 minute Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson.
If you resonate with TODAY’s approach, you may be interested in the Feldenkrais course The Focused Body.

Episode 108:Today’s class is a short Feldenkrais lesson that will be done lying on the back. This simple, but effective lesson, creates a sense of wholeness and connection from your feet to your head.
This lesson is from the Feldenkrais Mini Lessons course that can be purchased. This self paced course has 16 mini lessons ranging from 15- 30 minutes. The lessons in this course are there for you when you need a shift or interruption of your current state, but don’t have an hour to spare. I like to think of them as more than a 5 minute movement snack, but also not the whole buffet. Just the right nourishment.

This is an intro class for the Feldenkrais Walking Series: Walking From Your Spine. The context for this series is to learn about how our limbs and our spine move in relation to each other.

Our inquiry of study during this meditation was inspired by two of my most influential teachers, Insight Meditation teacher Mark Nunberg and Feldenkrais trainer Jeff Haller.
You won’t need anything for this class, except a cushion or blanket to sit on, or if you choose to lie down, please have any props you will need if you choose to do the meditation lying down.

Episode 104:Today’s class is a short breath awareness meditation done in savasana with a weight placed on the belly.
You will need something heavy that you can place on your abdomen. If you have a yoga sandbag, this works great. Most people don’t have that, so I suggest finding one or two very thick books. A thick textbook could work well. If you are using a book, then you will also want to have a blanket or a towel that you can place underneath the book, so that the weight is not hard or pressing into any part of you in an uncomfortable way.

Episode 103:Today’s class is focused on calming the eyes. This class is similar to Episode 56, but I wanted to re record and re-teach the class, as it has been a popular episode and I wanted to get a higher quality audio version of it for you.
In this short Feldenkrais lesson, the eyes, their state of calm, and the quality of our dark vision becomes a marker of the overall state of the nervous system. When one’s visual stimulation calms down, it can have a relaxing effect on the neck, jaw, breathing, face and more. And as a result, your whole self will settle down, get quiet and the sharpness of your vision can increase. So, let's see how we can organize our vision to make the orientation clear and smooth, so that the muscle tone in the whole body can become organized and engaged to do a function well.If you enjoy this lesson, you may consider joining the Feldenkrais Series:
Being Good to Yourself: Caring for your Neck, Shoulders, Eyes, & Breath

Episode 102:Today’s class is an exploration of the breath. In yoga, we call this pranayama. However today’s lesson will be more of a Feldenkrais inspired way of paying attention to the breath. With each proposal, each variation of breathing, I invite you to listen and take care. If at any moment you feel the way you are breathing creates tension or shortness of breath, please do the breathing proposal with much less intensity or even imagine the movement.
If you enjoy this lesson, you may consider joining the Feldenkrais Series:
Being Good to Yourself: Caring for your Neck, Shoulders, Eyes, & Breath
In this series, we will explore lessons that promote self-connection and pleasure, finding equanimity in movement, and adapting to change with resilience. In a world where technology has become ever more prevalent, it can be easy to feel disconnected from our bodies, our emotions, and the people around us. Tension in the neck, shoulders and eyes can become a persistent nuisance, but through the gentle, exploratory movements of the Feldenkrais Method, we can find a sense of joy and connection that is uniquely human. Episode 100:Today I am going to share with you an episode of the Expand Your Abilities Podcast with Jeffrey Schwinghammer. Jeffrey is a filmmaker and Feldenkrais practitioner and the director of the upcoming documentary on the Feldenkrais Method. I’m really enjoying how his podcast is breaking down some really complex principles of the Feldenkrais method.
In his recent interview with me we discussed my background, how I came to teach both yoga and Feldenkrais, and how learning to move efficiently can enhance the quality of our life.
Our conversation leads to talking about finding a sense of freedom in your body and how Feldenkrais is a way to unlearn any sense of having an external authority over your body. This is a huge topic, a topic that I am currently exploring in my Feldenkrais series Autonomy and Personal Freedom. So, I hope you enjoy this conversation about feeling free in your body, and how Feldenkrais and yoga complement each other. Be sure to check out some of Jeffrey’s other episodes of the Expand Your Abilities Podcast.

Episode 95:Today's podcast is constructed in two parts. First, I will be talking about posture as a dynamic system and giving some information on my Feldenkrais series, Posture Matters, explaining how a Feldenkrais approach to posture restoration is different from other modalities. Then we will go into an abbreviated lesson. The lesson portion of today is a little taste of the first lesson in the Posture Matters series and begins around 21:33.
Posture, including the tension in the shoulders and the neck that originates from a forwardness of one’s head is one of the most requested topics I get from students. It’s a difficulty that none of us are immune to. If you are interested in this work, join the Posture Matters series which can always be done as a self-paced course.

Episode 94:A 60 minute live class blending Feldenkrais and gentle yoga poses.
In this class we explore creating a sense of width in the body. Oftentimes if our eyes have a more narrow focus (like when we are looking at a fixed object such as a screen), then our whole body can start to shrink inward and feel compressed. This is a fantastic practice to juice up the spine after a day of sitting and integrate the eyes after a day of looking at a screen.

In today’s short Feldenkrais lesson we will use the pubic bone, the tailbone, and the creases of the hip joints as anatomical places of reference and awareness. This mini lesson is an example of the direction that the lessons will start to take in the Pelvic Floor and Deep Core Rapport Series.
This lesson continues the process of finding power and grace from your pelvis. What set's this practice apart from other pelvic explorations is the subtlety of it all and the inner connections you'll make from your perineum to your hip joints. For many people, this lesson may help you start to simply sense your hip joints as part of the pelvis. This is a nice lesson to pair with Episode 86: which was a yoga class with Pubic Bone Awareness.

This is an informational podcast about pelvic floor and deep abdominal health.
Pelvic Floor Health and Abdominal strengthening is one of the most requested topics I get from students. The function of the pelvic floor has a profound effect on our quality of life. So anything that can be done to bring more ease or a higher quality of control in this area can be revolutionary.
For both men and women, improving the ability to both relax and engage the pelvic floor and the deep abdominal muscles can have positive effects on:

Episode 87 is a 40 minute yoga class of slow active restoratives. We mostly focus on three poses, a shoulder opener, a twist, and a restorative backbend.
With attention and detail, we will unstick the shoulder blades, move into a twist and a backbend, practice neck awareness, softening the chest, and feeling a tone in the lower belly.
You can have a single block and blanket handy for class.

This is a 75 minute live class blending yoga and the Feldenkrais method. We will use the pubic bone as an anatomical place of reference and awareness. Using a multidisciplinary approach, including breathing practices, myofascial release, active and passive stretching, acquaint yourself with the subtle movements of the pelvis.
At the beginning of the class, we locate the pubic bone on our own bodies. Not sure where the pubic bone is? For an image of area of the pubic bone that we locate check out the blog post for this episode.

This class is the second of a series of classes I will am posting as an introduction to the Body Matter Feldenkrais series, Soften the System.
Today we take another Feldenkrais approach to practicing the ability to settle the body. This class utilizes the powerful effect that calming the hands can have on our whole system.
Our hands, palm, and fingers take up an enormous amount of room in our motor cortex. And if we can effectively calm and inhibit the unnecessary of activity in one area of the motor cortex, the process tends to spread and extend to other areas in the motor cortex. Areas beyond just the hand can thus be affected. We think we are doing something with our hand, but we are doing something with our brain! Feel how the softening spreads, and the relaxed feeling generalizes throughout your whole system.

This class is a grounding practice that gives you effective learning tools for nervous system care, pain management, and finding ease while the body is in a stress response. This episode uses a rocking motion often associated with self soothing and we continue our look at neck care by zooming out to the whole system.
This Feldenkrais approach to Neck Care connects the ankles, the pelvis, and the whole self to how the neck moves. It might seem like your ankles or feet would have nothing to do with your neck tension. So, let’s find out! If there is tension or a lot of pain in the neck, focusing only there and bringing more and more of your attention to the place that hurts may not always be a wise idea! For today’s class you will not need any props, unless, when you lie on your back you prefer to have a small lift under you head.
If you resonate with TODAY’s approach or are finding that your neck pain may be linked to jaw tension, for an even deeper study of this topic from a Feldenkrais lens, you can check out the:

Today we take a Feldenkrais approach to Neck Care by connecting the shoulders, the chest, and the whole self to how the neck moves, and how the neck can feel supported. With poor postural organization, it’s common that the muscles of your neck are forced to work overtime to hold your head up.
If you are trying all of the neck classes in this series, take note of which approach you are finding most helpful and supportive for you, and then return to those episodes.

Todays’ class is Neck Care Part 3 - mobility. Part 1 was awareness, Part 2, strength, and now we will take a more in depth look at stretching the neck safely. It’s important not to view the neck as something we tug and pull at and just stretch aggressively. This is why I am taking a comprehensive look at the many ways we can approach neck care. If you are trying all of the neck classes in this series, you can take note of which approach you are finding most helpful and supportive for you and then return to those episodes.

Improve text neck discomfort and build strength in the right places for your neck. Last week’s podcast was mostly awareness of the neck and releasing of unnecessary habitual tension held in the neck. This week, we take a look at how to strengthen the neck and reverse the effects of the forward and down head action, (sometimes referred to as “text neck”), and the pain that comes with that. This class strengthens the upper back and neck extensors. Most of this class could be done sitting at your desk as a way to help learn some new and better habits for neck health and to take a short break from looking at your devices. Try it on its own, or pair it with Episode 77.

There is not going to be a lot of deep neck stretching in this class. Over stretching the neck too aggressively is actually something we wanted to be kind of careful with. Our neck has a lot of potential for mobility. And sometimes we actually use the neck more than we need to because other parts of the body, particularly your thoracic spine, tend to be tight and this area of spine may not move as much as it could, thus borrowing the movement from the neck. So if you feel like your neck is working over time, this class is for you.
You will need one yoga blanket rolled into a cylinder for class.

This podcast is an intersection of my yoga teaching and my training in the Feldenkrais method. Today's bonus podcast is an interview with Pamela Seelig.
Pamela recently published her first book, Threads of Yoga. In this interview we discuss the spiritual aspect of yoga, what it is like to start out as a yoga teacher, responsibilities of a yoga teacher and student, how yoga can be a doorway to a meditation practice, and generally how one can use the body to be of service for regenerating a connection to the spirit. I think this interview is interesting for both yoga teachers and students alike. Something I have never done on this podcast is to talk a bit more about my own experiences as a teacher, and my training and philosophy around teaching yoga, so you will get a little window into that as well. Pamela was a pleasure to speak with and I hope you enjoy this interview.

Today’s class is a 60 minute Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson. This lesson is often helpful for those suffering from lower back pain.
Please approach this class with ease. This is different from yoga, where you may arrive in an asana and stay there. Instead we are doing small movements. You will repeat the directions slowly and rest in between actions. If you have never done a Feldenkrais® lesson, I suggest you read these guidelines for practicing Awareness Through Movement.

Today’s class is a 30 minute level 1-2 yoga class that focuses on waking up the armpit ribs and works with the action of hollowing the armpits back, as a way to open the chest and shoulders. This class includes many twists and deep shoulder openers and you will need a double blanket roll or cylindrical bolster. You could us a soft foam roller, but the class was designed with a rolled yoga blanket.

Today’s class is a mini Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement lesson that you will do sitting in a chair. No other props will be needed, so please take a moment to find a stable chair with a flat sitting surface.
Many of us are spending a much longer time in front of screens. And this creates more load and restriction around our shoulders and leads to unease and tension in the shoulders and the neck. We will use our own hands and a soft attention as a way to help relax these commonly tense areas.

This class is a 75 minute level 1/2 live yoga class that focuses on finding both length and strength in your torso. This includes the back (the spine) and the front (including your abdominal muscles). You may feel like this is a class that both softens the abdomen and strengthens it. Likewise, the back muscles may feel simultaneously worked and massaged longer.
In this class, we start lying flat on the back. Eventually we will use a single yoga blanket rolled into a cylinder and place it behind the thoracic spine. You could use a yoga bolster or a soft foam roller, but the class was designed with a rolled yoga blanket. You will also want a strap, yoga blocks, and a wall space.

This is a 75 minute Level 1-2 class taught live. This is a Feldenkrais® inspired class. As many of you know, I also teach the Feldenkrais® method. And this class is an example of my blended Yoga + Feldenkrais® classes. Each class infuses more traditional yoga asana practice with the Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement method. You can think of it as an interdisciplinary excursion of yoga, Feldenkrais, self-massage, breathing exercises, movement puzzles, and a compassionate mindset - to help you feel a greater sense of ease and comfort in yourself.
In this class, we start with a longer somatic exploration using a blanket roll for support in helping you feel and soften the spine. At the end of class a number of concepts are brought together to create a continuous moving backbend practice. This is meant to move in and out of, and to slowly repeat just as you might in a Feldenkrais class.
We will make a single blanket roll or cylinder. We will use a strap and two blocks.

This is a 75 minute Level 1-2 class taught live. We begin with breath work, exploring a few of the many different ways that the diaphragm can shape the torso and support the spine. There is a focus on recovering or regaining the natural lumbar curve that has disappeared for so many people who sit a lot. We will also do a number of shoulder external rotation practices which will help reverse forward leaning shoulders and a tight chest which are the effects of holding your phone and looking down a lot! You will need two blankets, two blocks, and a loop-able strap.
We will make a double blanket roll or cylinder. We will use the looped strap around the forearms, and the two blocks will stack on top of one another to place your front foot on them during anjaneyasana.

This class begins with some breathing explorations to help warm up your sensing abilities of the lungs, their capacity to fill, and their capacity to change shape in order to support your asanas. Our breath is constantly adapting to the environment we put ourselves in. In this class, feel how your breath can adapt to the shapes of the asanas. We do a lot of shoulder opening and awareness of the internal spaces to support backbends, culminating in camel pose.

This is a recording of a mini class that I taught during the first few months of the Covid crisis, when many of us, including yoga and movement teachers began looking at screens for many more hours a day than we were used to. This class does not include much asana at all, but is more of a meditation and yoga for the eyes. It is informed by the Feldenkrais practice, of which I am also a practitioner of. This lesson will help calm the nervous system, relax your eyes, let go of Zoom fatigue, help you find ease in the face and eye muscles, and may even help you fall asleep.
You will not need any props for this class. The class is mostly done in a supine savasana position, so be sure that you are warm enough and comfortable. If you enjoy this class, you may be interested in more of the Feldenkrais offerings that I have on my website www.body-matter.com

Back by popular demand, it’s another yoga nidra class. In this 20 minute class, you will be guided through a scan of the body while resting in savasana. This form of yoga relaxation has been found to reduce tension and anxiety, to help those who suffer from a scattered mind, and to heal insomnia. A focus will be placed on specific parts of the body throughout the meditation allowing the mind to concentrate on the sensations that are present. Do this class on its own for a break in your day, or as an addition at the end of an active class.

This is a live class from a summer intensive taught in July of 2016. Class begins with developmental movement warm-ups focused on waking up the side body. This warm up prepares you for the active asanas that are done in the last half of class.
Just under two hours, you may need to carve out some time on a Saturday afternoon for this one. The first hour of this class could be done alone as a gentle restorative class to wake up the torso.

It’s been over a year since I have posted a podcast. I’m very happy to share this first Tech-antidote class with you. This class is not just for the imbalances you may be finding in your body, but also the mental fatigue, the brain fog, and the emotional rollercoaster that being connected online for hours can do to the whole self. A contemplative practice is such a crucial part of our work-life-stress balance. Managing your stress is a huge step towards good health. I hope this episode and all the past podcasts help to keep you balanced, healthy, and happy.

In this 30 minute class, you will be guided through a scan of the body while resting in savasana. This form of yoga relaxation has been found to reduce tension and anxiety, help those who suffer from a scattered mind and restless body, and heal insomnia. A focus will be placed on specific parts of the body throughout the meditation allowing the mind to concentrate on the sensations that are present.

When something stressful is happening in our lives the shoulders tend to be a common place where we hold tension in the body. Tense muscles, if ignored can lead to injury later on. This tense feeling in the shoulders can even start to creep up towards the ears, give us tension headaches, and keep us from having a healthy and restful night of sleep.
Sitting for hours over a keyboard, which we are all too familiar with, can contribute to tightness in the hips, legs, neck, shoulders, and back. This creates an unhealthy posture that you take with you when you leave your office for the day, in which the back and shoulders hunch down and the neck protrudes the head forward. The spine thus becomes misaligned when the body is in such a stagnate position.
In this short class, we will move through basic poses that target areas of tension which can be an effective antidote to many desk job ailments and general stress build up in the shoulders. This is meant to be a class that you could use if you only have a short amount of time, but need a quick break from sitting at your desk. Or, if you come home from work and you need a little pick me up, this class will energize those stagnate tight areas. As an added bonus, yoga can have powerful effects on the mind and may help address the damaging stress of a high-pressure job by helping to calm the mind and quiet racing thought patterns.

In this 60 minute class we will focus on finding balance in the sacroiliac joints. Class starts with a flowing breath exercise on your back to set a therapeutic tone for your practice. We move on to seated dandasana and a slow modified sun salutation. Utkatasana is our main standing pose and is practiced with kapalabhati pranayama. Headstand (salamba sirsasana) and crow pose (bakasana) are some of the more challenging poses that we lead up to. If you do not have a headstand practice, be sure to consult a live teacher before you invert fully. Class ends with a series of twists. If you have sacroiliac instability, be sure to keep your effort at 80% in the twists without forcing any position. Gary, my cat, really wanted to teach you today as well, you may hear him meowing in the background now and then!

This is an active prenatal class for mothers who feel fit and healthy during their pregnancy. This class is suitable for the first and second trimesters and can be practiced into the third trimester, monitoring how you are feeling. With that said, we still move in a slow and graceful pace. Starting with a seated meditation, we then move into seated postures that create space in the side body and the hips. This will include a flowing sequence side to side in parvritta janu sirsasana which you can see photos of below. Our flowing standing poses will take us through tree pose (vrksasana), warrior I and II (virabhadrasana I and II), wide legged forward fold (prasarita padottanasana), goddess pose, and triangle (trikonasana). Squats, sIngle pigeon, and a side savasana will finish the practice.

This is a 35-minute meditation practice that is useful when you are managing physical pain or emotional pain that may be felt in the body. This practice is based on the concept of Pratipaksha Bhavana that can be found in the Yoga Sutras. Sutra 1.33 as translated by Nischala Joy Devi says:
“When presented with disquieting thoughts or feelings, cultivate an opposite, elevated attitude. This is Pratipaksha Bhavana.”
This is a challenging practice – but it is one that has the potential to change physical and mental suffering. We will practice how to interrupt negative mental states and replace them with positive states. This will train your mind for times when you are feeling physical or mental discomfort. One of the important ways meditation creates lasting change is by helping you discover the habits of your mind that are contributing to pain, stress, and suffering. Everyone has chronic, unconscious habits of thinking and feeling. Some patterns, such as chronic worrying, disapproval, self-criticism, anger, or loneliness end up intensifying and reinforcing chronic pain. Other patterns such as acceptance, appreciation, or humor can reduce or prevent pain. With each round of this practice, the mind and body become shaped more in the direction of responding to future experiences with positive thoughts. The practice can be done anywhere at anytime. After listening to the podcast you can use these VERY basic guidelines whenever you need the help of the practice.
You can also choose to work with an opposite state of mind:
Lastly, you can work with a sensation or feeling that is opposite to a painful sensation you are currently feeling. Ask yourself: What state of mind and body would heal what I am feeling right now? Call this the “Healing Opposite”. The answer may be relief, comfort, warmth, energy, acceptance, forgiveness, courage, etc. Whatever you choose will become the focus of the meditation. You choose this opposite.

In this 90 minute class, I build upon some of the material that I will be exploring during my March retreat. The class will grow from a seated meditation into some longer yin style poses and eventually towards more challenging asanas. Take this class as a way to discover your limits, and soften your mental and physical boundaries. Your hips and lower back will thank you, and you will get a tiny glimpse of what I have planned for the retreat.
You will need a block, a strap, and a wall to place the short end of your mat.
A large part of the art and skill in a yoga practice is the ability to sense how far one can move in a stretch. If there is no challenge in a pose, no intensity or stretch, then there will be little possibility for opening. The opposite approach of going too far in a pose, increases the possibility for pain and injury to occur. Somewhere between these two places is a happy middle ground. It is possible to find a degree of stretch that is in balance. Where there is a challenge without pain. Where there is vigor without strain.
Experiencing this balance or middle ground relies on a high degree of sensitivity. This place in the stretch just before pain, but not pain itself, could be referred to as a your boundary. With heightened sensitivity, the boundary can soften and you will be able to feel more space in your poses. Pain tells you where the limits of your physical conditioning lie. The length of your stay is determined by your endurance limit, while your interest in a pose is a function of your attention.
Take this class as a way to play with all of these boundaries: endurance, strength, stretch, and mental attention. As you “play the edges of the boundaries”, your skill in yoga has little to do with your degree of flexibility. Rather it is a function of how sensitive you play with these limits.

This is a very playful 20 minutes to wake up your abdominals and upper body. The exercises during the first half of class are done on a thinly rolled yoga blanket or towel. This will create a less stable ground and a more challenging position for the back of the body to balance on. Your body will need to rely on the abdominals to keep you from tipping over.

This is a 75 minute live slow flow class. Class begins with a short pranayama to bring attention to the inhale phase of the breath and how the inhale can enhance an opening and lifting of the chest during the asanas.
This balanced practice includes a number of standing poses and twists, ending with purvottanasana, or upward facing plank pose as our backbend. This pose, as well as the more general focus of class will be on how we can find a lift and buoyancy in the chest. We will use the inhale phase of the breath to wake up and open the muscles of the chest and the exhale phase of the breath to connect to the deeper abdominal muscles that hold us up in the poses.

Take this podcast with you when you travel. Bring it into your hotel room or even do it in the airport. It’s another great class if you have been sitting at your desk all day. Stand up, lie down, twist and move things into a different shape!!!
Traveling, especially by air, can be very hard on the body. It wreaks havoc on our posture and the our mental state. You may feel spacey, anxious, or generally unsettled when you are traveling. This class will ground your energy, helping you to feel awake, rested, open and ready to enjoy the rest of your day and your new destination.
As you do this practice, cultivate a slow, deep and even breath. On slow inhalations focus on bringing space and life back into the body and on long exhalations focus on a sense of grounded steadiness.

Today we briefly explore bringing attention to our samskaras during the hatha yoga practice. The concept of samskaras from the Yoga Sutras refers to the imprints that are left on the subconscious mind from our experiences, in other words, our habits. In this 40 minute practice, we touch on how becoming more aware of our samskaras during an asana practice can help us relate to our environment during the rest of our lives.
Thank you for listening,
Sarah

We start with a blanket or a towel and that is the only prop you will need.

This class is a video specifically designed for those with a posterior tilt of the pelvis. Before going ahead and doing this podcast, you will want to be sure that this class is suitable for your postural habits. A posterior tilt of the pelvis tucks the tail under and often creates a rounding lower back/lumbar spine.
Generally, this causes the hamstrings to be tight, the lower back to flatten from its natural lumbar curve, and the shoulders to begin a steady slump forward. The class was originally created with as a video. I have posted the audio version here. Please refer to the podcast blog post to access the video. Be sure to have a blanket or towel, and a strap.

This is a 75 minute practice in which the poses are held slightly longer. The way that most of the asanas in this class are designed is so that you feel more supported by the props and the floor. I hope that you find this class beneficial for you when you need more of those long juicy stretches rather than a vigorous vinyasa class. To find a video version of this class visit the podcast blog post here.
You will need a block, a strap, and a blanket for class. There is an added bonus at the end of class introducing how to bring a foam roller into your yoga practice.

This is a live mixed level class. Grab and block and a blanket for class.
Two of my favorite poses in this class are dhanurasana and parvrtta janu sirsasana. We work up into dhanurasana (bow pose) with a blanket rolled up underneath the lower belly. This prop supports the lower back so that you can more easily move the weight more to your legs rather than having all of the weight on your belly. After dhanurasana we will take seated twist ardha matsyendrasana right into side bend parvrtta janu sirsasana. These three poses done towards the end of class are a great sequence to help stimulate the abdominal organs, especially the liver and the kidneys.
Enjoy!

This is a 90 minute class without any down dog or poses that require weight bearing on the wrists and hands. This class is great for anyone because of its focus on opening up the upper back and keeping an open posture in the chest. This relieves any pinching or stress that occurs in the shoulders, arms, and wrists from poor posture.
You will need two blocks, a strap, and a blanket or towel. (also have two ice packs ready for savasana if you have inflammation in your wrists).
Some of the poses we will move through include: ardha salamba sirsasana- half headstand/headstand prep, utkatasana- chair pose, virabadrasa III- warrior III, garudasana- eagle pose, malasana- garland pose, ardha matsyendrasana- half lord of the fishes pose, and gomukasana- cow’s face pose.

In this class I bring up something I have been working on since the beginning of my yoga practice. PRECISION! Really let yourself dig a little deeper into the symmetries or asymmetries of your body. Moving precisely requires patience, focus, and consistency. Breathe with it. Let it be full of life and ease and expansion. Precision doesn’t need to mean hard and rigid! So stay soft and move with compassion.
Two blocks will be helpful for this class.

This is a slow flowing class. We pay special attention to the connection to the floor and to the breath in all the poses. Today, practice appreciation for whatever your situation is, good or bad. Without trying to make things “better”, be present with where you are and allow your body and mind to shift, change, expand, and open to joy (and chattaranga pushups!). The final pose before savasana is supta baddha konasana.
Be sure when you move through chatturanga, the shoulders never drop lower than the elbows. Keep the elbows hugging towards the body and use your belly to help make this pose fun!

This class is designed to help if you are someone who has seasonal allergies during this time of year when all the beautiful flowers start to come into bloom. There are actually three separate times of year when seasonal allergies tend to occur: spring (tree pollen), summer (grass pollen), and early fall (ragweed pollen), so feel free to use this class whenever you need it. This will also be a useful class if you have a common head cold, if your shoulders need some stretching, or if you need a nice way to calm down in the evening.
Here are some class notes to help with unfamiliar poses and prop usage:
We do move into shoulderstand at the end of class. I highly recommend you practice shoulderstand with a folded blanket under your shoulders to avoid any compression into your fragile cervical spine or pressing your neck into the floor.
Directions to get into Salamba Sarvangasana (shoudlerstand): Place a neatly folded blanket with about an inch of thickness at the middle of your mat. You will eventually put your shoulders on the smooth edge of the fold, but first take the end of your mat and fold it over to the smooth fold of the blanket so that you have all sticky surfaces. Lie down, with your shoulders about an inch down from the end of the mat and blanket. Your head should be off the blanket and on the part of the mat that is not elevated; when you touch your shoulders, you should feel that they are lifted about an inch off the floor resting on the blanket, while your neck should not be touching anything. There should be a lot of space between your neck and the floor. Bend your knees and place your arms along the sides of your body. Lift your knees toward your head and beyond to lift your hips. As your hips move higher, place your hands with fingers pointing towards your feet at your mid-back. With bent knees, shimmy your shoulder blades toward each other and narrow off the space between your elbows. Once your hips are directly above your shoulders, begin to lengthen your legs towards the ceiling. The higher your legs lift, the more you may want to walk your hands down your back — towards the ground and open your shoulders. Take your gaze to your toes, your breathing belly, or close your eyes.

Be sure to have fun, rest when you need, and remember child’s pose is always available even when it is not taught! Focus on listening to what your body is asking for today and follow your sensations. Remember sensations exist in every part of the body, so relax and let yourself start to feel the tactile sensations, the feeling presence and the spaciousness in your body.

This is a 20 minute podcast with very few poses. It is the first in a series I will be doing that uses imagery to help soften tension and bring space and awareness into the body. The focus of this class is mainly on breathing, the pelvis, awareness in the spine, and feeling the expanse from head to toe. If you are feeling extra wound up today, this podcast could be a nice way to start a longer practice or a way to simply chill out and release some aggression you may be holding in the body.

This is a vodcast that I recorded specially for a student who has a slipped disk in her lumbar spine. In general this is a gentle class that most everyone can participate in. However, if you are dealing with a different injury your program should always be tailored to fit your specific needs. If you would like to watch the video of this class visit the podcast episode page on my website body-matter.com
While your back pain persists if you have a slipped of herniated disk in the lower back there are a few things to remember when you are practicing yoga:
Do not bend forward past 90 degrees with straight knees.
Avoid all seated forward bends. (which there are none of in this class)
Avoid rounding your back. (you will notice we are doing a lot of small gentle arches in the lower back which will help ease the disk back towards its correct placement)
If any pose causes pain, tingling, or numbness, stop immediately.
Be sure to modify with blankets, blocks, straps and any other props that you need.
