Intro: Is There A Hotline? “Line 5”  According To The Moon, the remarkable new collaboration between Montréal vocalist Sarah Albu and veteran Canadian composer and instrument inventor Gayle Young. The disc chronicles the latter's unique catalogue of vocal compositions. It's Young's second release with Irish imprint Farpoint Recordings, following her acclaimed As Trees Grow, which featured her piano music performed by Xenia Pestova Bennett & Ed Bennett. The works that comprise the album span over 40 years, including music commissioned by Albu herself. Unsurprisingly, this makes for a very diverse collection of works, however, there are distinct unifying features that help to establish a trajectory throughout them. Chief among them is Young's idiosyncratic approach to text. According to the liner notes, “Albu was intrigued by the use of texts as elements of notation, suggesting an instrumental approach to the voice.” In earlier pieces, such as the titular 1978 work, this is evident in how the composer uses vowels as acoustic filters applied to frequency content of the vocal tone. Yet even with later pieces that employ more involved texts such as The State of Corn (1998) or Sweet Summer Salad (2013) Young emphasises the texture and musicality of phonemes over building narratives. On the disc's haunted 14-minute finale, Ancient Ocean Floor, the most recent of the compositions, Albu's voice intones descriptions of a river valley walk, leading the listener through a broad, rich sound palette. Accompanying her is Young's microtonal string instrument the Amaranth woven through a recording of a waterfall filtered acoustically through tuned resonators. https://www.farpointrecordings.com/product-page/sarah-albu-gayle-young-according-to-the-moon  Superior State by Leitmotiv Limbo (Adelaide, 2023) Superior State is the second Leitmotiv Limbo album released by Port Adelaide’s De la Catessen Records, after the 2022 CD Spiritual Disturbance. This time, Leitmotiv Limbo’s isolationist studies have been bumped to vinyl, which feels like the perfect format for these twelve miniatures. The project of Adelaide artist Elijah Värttö, Leitmotiv Limbo has, over the past few decades, tracked a history of quietly insistent experimentation, embracing several technologies – invented instruments; analogue filters; drum synth – to sketch desolate, cavernous structures, sometimes performed in reverberant spaces, such as church halls, which gifts the recordings a ritualistic air.

Music that has nothing to prove.

Intro: Serene Ailment Incantation Praxis from cold_storage   Flash Forward is a forthcoming arts program brought to you by The City of Melbourne and Heavy Machinery Records. Flash Forward will see new work by 40 visual artists and 40 live music premieres presented in 40 of Melbourne's iconic CBD laneways in 2021. The full set of these commissioned original music works will be released on 12” vinyl by Heavy Machinery Records over the coming months. Since 2017, Heavy Machinery Records has commissioned and overseen the LP release of various original works by unique, outstanding Melbourne artists. This year, Heavy Machinery Records will be releasing vinyl from the full set of musical artists handpicked to take part in Melbourne's massive Flash Forward laneways program.  Diimpa Bergamot (pre release)Playing a mix of analogue synths and acoustic instruments, Diimpa draws inspiration from fast-paced minimalism to healing ambient music, all from a queer autistic Murri perspective.  Vacuum I’ll Call You (pre release)Andrea Blake (ASPS/CHROME DOME) and Jenny Branagan’s (NUN) second single  New Weird Australia, Made Of Wood And Wire (2021)Heartswin - Tammuz Gatherer - Extension Emily Grantham - Coconut Flesh Peon - Slinky Motion - Three  Paula Garcia Stone A Long Wait (Flaming Pines 2021)A Long Wait explores vulnerability and isolation during 2020 to 2021. Placed in the “clinically extremely vulnerable” category, Paula García Stone was not able to leave her house at all during the lockdowns of 2020. She was also unable to walk for most of the year due to fractured bones in one of her feet. A Long Wait is the product of this period of grief, loneliness and frustration. Turning to her domestic and local soundscape for inspiration, she composes here with lawn mowers, medical equipment, insects and her own breath. “I found that generally my neighbourhood all had their lawn mowers out and were doing DIY, unlike the new found silence people seemed to be describing at the time. Somehow I managed, and I found domestic sounds and my own medical paraphernalia interesting and useful in the bigger context of my environment. I hoped to amplify grief and at times frustration, as well as the rhythm of time passing by,” she explains.

Intro: Serene Ailment Incantation Praxis from cold_storage   Black Quantum Futurism Time Distortion from Afterlife of Events (2015)Moor Mother—aka the Philadelphia-based activist, poet, and musician Camae Ayewa—often uses samples and field recordings to write the lives of the oppressed back into history. Ayewa and her partner Rasheedah Phillips, who together form the multidisciplinary collective Black Quantum Futurism, draw inspiration from the mid–20th century blue singers who spoke of police brutality, and seek agency in areas as fundamental as memory. By sampling the dash cam recording of Sandra Bland’s 2015 arrest, their song “Time Distortion” gives the listener fragmented insight into the moment when Bland was stopped by a state trooper for failing to use a turn signal—an arrestable offense in Texas but one that is rarely used. It feels like you’re seeing everything take place from behind the fogged glass of the car window, with Bland’s abrupt, terrified replies to her arresters just barely discernible behind a wall of noise and squealing synth accents. “Time Distortion” makes you a witness to the event, but like a traumatic memory, the moment is skewed and its clarity is faded. Chino Amobi Airport Music for Black Folk (2016) When Brian Eno created his classic 1978 album Music for Airports, he perhaps didn’t consider that its placid ambience wouldn’t be reflective of everyone’s experience at the airport. On Airport Music for Black Folk, NON label cofounder Chino Amobi provides an alternative soundtrack that includes recordings of a woman coldly reciting safety instructions, disintegrating rubble, and collapsing machinery. In tapping into the anxiety that black travelers often feel, Airport Music for Black Folk presents genre-crossing ambient and industrial music that is neither relaxing nor entirely in the background. Instead, it’s alienating, hostile, and makes us want to check over our shoulder. Kate Carr For Some Odd Reason (2020)"I made this piece because I started thinking about piped crowd noise at sporting events, and how widespread this had become during the pandemic. As I delved into this area I noticed there were many different types of sound streams that people were turning to as a source of comfort during this period. This work uses geophone recordings of city structures vibrating in response to footfalls and traffic, and samples four long youtube streams, one of a road, one of the streetscape of New York, one of bar chatter, and one of crowd chants at a football match. All the spoken material are comments left on these or similar long background noise youtube streams during the pandemic, and these are read by many different individuals." Ernie Althoff and Clinton Green Chrysler on the Lawn (Ice Age - 2017)Live outdoor performance using a variety of acoustic instruments, objects and appropriated objects (BMX bike, cardboard tube, prepared turntable, bird calls, the titular Chrysler), quietly urging a composition into life that subtly interplays with the soundscape of the site. Edited from a live performance at the "Inside/Outside" event on 26 October 2014.EA: BMX bike tyres and spokes, octagonal roller instrument, 2 metre cardboard tube, long hinged wooden box instrument with tin tine ends, car bonnet.CG: humdrum, car bonnet, cymbals and cups turntable machine, cheap kalimba, bird calls. Scientia vs Bilg Dystopian Present (2021) Perth sound artistsWorks of Science Fiction often depict dystopian societies in far futures. These works are a reflection of the idea that aspects of these futures have become realities in the present day. The Shape of Sound Volume 3 (Ice Age - 2013)Sean Baxter - SchmelzwerkUrchyn - Web Of LiesWife - Latka Gravas

This deeply evocative album outlines the abstract journey of a young woman called to the seashore. She dives down to a mysterious shipwreck filled with wondrous deep-sea creatures.Called to the sea by The Following (performed by The Amplified Elephants) – a council of benevolent interdimensional aliens – a young woman is taken to a sunken ship where she unlocks a giant clay urn unleashing the godlike creature from within. She is transformed by this radical experience.First single 'Shipwreck' draws the listener on an immersive waterworld journey. Cinematic sequences highlight some deeper dreamlike narrative at play. This ambient field recording washed track marks The Amplified Elephants ascending to the pinnacle of their arresting sonic abilities. Their expression and creative language made all the more ear catching through their lived experience and perception as artists living with neurological diversity. The Amplified Elephants dive to great auditory and visual depths linking sonic art; video art; deep ocean creatures and their own take on the infinite brilliance of the creative mind. At times ambient; at times oceanic; at times strident with powerful sonic waves.l depths linking sonic art; video art; deep ocean creatures and their own take on the infinite brilliance of the creative mind. At times ambient; at times oceanic; at times strident with powerful sonic waves. released September 6, 2021 Candlesnuffer apsomeophonebad snake laughmoney’s dark nightforged baggage 2voices of the air shaft 2travel over books roughlyFrom David Brown‘apsomeophone’ grew out of love for and, from a listener's point of view, an historical immersion in a tight group of compositions by musique concréte, film soundtrack and Twentieth Century Classical composers. These listening experiences became entwined, at some stage, with my own ponderings round a desire to compose a group of very personally suited recordings, to be utilised in a live context as a proxy ensemble accompaniment to my slowly blossoming and evolving prepared guitar techniques.Through a compositional process that I would loosely describe as ‘aural sculpture’, I extracted snippets of sound and short musical passages from these adored compositions (the list of composers borrowed from includes Béla Bartók, John Cage, Pierre Henry, György Ligeti, Tōru Takemitsu and Edgard Varése). These small sonic extractions I then processed heavily, augmented spatially and timbrally and began to arrange into fragmented groupings, making correlations pleasing to my ear. This transfigurative process became a long drawn out undertaking, soon enriched and complicated by the systematic and responsive addition of other fragmentary sounds generated through the use of my own guitars, stringed instruments and electronics. And…., on the layering and editing went as I meandered towards a final point of sonic sculptural satisfaction. As a group of odes, each of the final compositions on ‘apsomeophone’ focuses on one or two of the aforementioned, inspirational listening antecedents.Fifteen years later, the compositions throughout ‘apsomeophone’ still hold a warm grip on me and, though distant timewise, I still feel saturated with all the minutiae of the compositional processes, a feeling akin to being immersed in a supportive body of warm water. It’s a record that I’m really attached to and remain entwined with to the point where the working methods which gestated there have become the norm for me. It’s a heavily pored over record, where somehow nothing is out of place, and I believe it’s a record loosely in the mode of its predecessors. Released September 17, 2021
