This week I speak with Tamie and Aaron. Tamie fills us in on how the macros diet is working for her, what she's counting and the difficulty she finds keeping everything in line. Aaron and I look back to the preparation classes we did prior to bariatric surgery and some of the life-changing restrictions we were told we'd have to adhere to after surgery. Looking back you realize that some things that were a big deal for you maybe weren't for someone else and vice versa.

This week marks the return of the podcast after my knee surgery. This episode was recorded prior to November 1st with Aaron and has been a long time in progress to this point. My conversation with Aaron centres around how his "new" combined family is dealing with his requirement to eat a gluten free diet. Lots of different personalities, and for the most part, all with good intentions, but getting to the point where Aaron feels the family knows enough to keep him safe is a journey.

This week I check in with Tamie who seems to be back on track with her macros eating program. We speak about meals that fit into her program and how she is trying to make substitutions for some of her old stand-bys that were suitable when she was following a weight watchers diet, but don't fit into her macros program. The weather is getting colder and Tamie is getting ready to stay home more, but still eat healthy.

This week's conversation with Aaron centres around how his newly blended family is handling the gluten free diet. Aaron's is a large and busy household with with lots of different interests and activities. Aaron uses the analogy of having to juggle balls, some are rubber and will bounce if they drop, others are glass and can't afford to be dropped. He explains how the gluten free diet fits into this perspective. We offer lots of suggestions for keeping his food and the family kitchen safe.

It's a family dynamic that is difficult to plan for, but must be addressed on a continuing basis. Plus as we can expect, there's a couple of plot twists that happen.

This week I'm speaking with Tamie to ask about counting macros - specifically protein and fibre. Tamie is being directed by her Nutritionist to get in lots of protein - much more than I could ever eat, along with a suggested amount of fibre that most of us work towards everyday. As well as maintaining a gluten free diet, counting macros can be challenging, but Tamie has some great tips for getting in lots of protein.

This week I'm chatting again to Tamie who has recently started counting macros. I wasn't sure I knew anything about this, but as we spoke, I realized that this is precisely what I had to do after my weight loss surgery. For Tamie, she is being directed to increase her protein to levels I would not be able to attain. It's tricky learning a new weight loss/maintenance program, so thanks to Tamie for taking us along on the ride.

This week I speak with Tamie and Carla. Like many of us, Tamie is often asked about what "program" she follows to lose and then maintain her weight. Often she must tailor her answers to the person or situation, but this week, she tells us what she says. Likewise, Carla is often asked questions about how she copes with intermittent fasting. Just like eating gluten free, the response is often "oh, I could never do that", or "I would die if I had to do that". Carla has become quite good at tackling these situations, as many of us have had to do when similarly defending our gluten free diet.

This week I'm speaking with Tamie and Carla. I ask Tamie about how her gluten free diet, and her efforts to eat healthy gluten free effect others around her. Carla and I chat about what she tells people when they ask her advice about maybe starting an intermittent fasting regime. People have interest in and start different eating programs for many reasons, as I know full well. Choosing something that will work for you and your lifestyle can require many attempts at different programs. Tamie and Carla have found what works for them and they cope well with external factors that could have de-railed them had they not found a program and lifestyle that worked for them individually.

Aaron has only very recently found out he has a condition called EOE, which apparently is not uncommon among those with Celiac Disease. EOE is the short form for Eosinophilic Esophagitis, which is an inflammation in the esophagus caused by foods, allergens, or acid reflux. Aaron found two articles for me to read over and here are the links -

This week I speak with Tamie and Carla. Tamie and I chat about how and why we sometimes have to be selfish in order to stay healthy. We often have to make choices for activities, workouts and food that may be just for ourselves, but that's okay and even important. This week I chat with Tamie and Carla. Tamie and I share our thoughts on our scales, sometimes annoying, sometimes mysterious and sometimes a statement of victory, but why do we sometimes rely on it, even become obsessive, and other times we find it easy to ignore. Tamie has recently decided to let her measurements tell her how she's doing with her eating plan, instead of her scale. Carla and I revisit our challenge to not eat after 9:30 pm. Carla got a late start on the challenge and my efforts lasted about one week. I was able to share things I'd learned about my eating style and how late night snacks do or don't fit in. I'm readying for a couple of long flights and ask Carla'a advice since she's accustomed to going long periods of time without eating at all. She shares some of her flight experiences.

I have been asked to pose this question to Aaron, and I've been holding off as he was having specific challenges with the post-surgery bariatric diet. This week, he wanted to reflect back on the how each of these major changes in the way he eats has impacted him. Also, do you have clothes that are 25 years old? Can you still wear them? Do you want to? Aaron has a great story and we're going to expand on the theme of going through your closet when we chat next.

This week I speak with Tamie and Carla. Tamie talks through her strategy to get back on track after the Thanksgiving holiday including deciding when to step on the scale. Carla and I tackle late night hunger; actually cravings, because we can't honestly say we're hungry. Then Carla proposes a challenge, or different challenges for her and I for the next two weeks.  What have I got myself into?

This week I speak with Aaron who has recently recovered from a nasty stomach flu. It did give him time to reflect on changes that have been happening in his overall attitude. Aaron feels he looks at life and food completely differently since his surgery and weight loss. He's much less judgemental, and doesn't want food and his appetite to define him. Often after bariatric surgery people feel different in their new bodies and it's great that Aaron is able to share his thoughts as he continues his weight loss journey.

This week I chat with Tamie about some apps she's used to help her on her weight loss journey.  She explains the Weight Watchers app, and how it helps with day to day meal planning.  Carla and I have a conversation about the do's and don'ts of Intermittent Fasting.  There's lots of advice out there, and it's not all correct.  There are rules, but for the most part they're pretty simple.

This week I should have had Aaron as a co-host, but things happen, as they do these days, so he was not able to speak with me.  He will be back in a couple of weeks.  I decided to talk about some things that have been on my mind of late - what's holding me back from making a plan, eating better, exercising and losing weight.  Maybe some of what I say might resonate with you, but for the most part, this discussion was with myself, it was personal, and hopefully, I'll be able to take my own advice.

On this week's episode Aaron and I speak about his experiences eliminating gluten from his kitchen. This is quite an accomplishment for a family that has been buying in bulk for many years. Aaron quizzes me about gluten free wraps, and we talk pizza alternatives. Here is the link to my Gluten Free Cauliflower Pizza Crust Recipe on Youtube - https://youtu.be/UPS07XMdtwk

I also mentioned my cheese muffin, which is a family favourite in our home, and just might fill Aaron's Cheese Bun tempations. You can find the recipe on my website at - https://www.suesglutenfreebaking.com/muffins-2

Next time I talk to Aaron we will chat about how to go to a restaurant or cafe with a friend soon after your diagnosis.

This week, I chat with Tamie who lives in the US.  Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so Tamie and I speak about her "plan" for the day as well as the fact that it's only one day.  It's easy to extend holidays about food to a few days, but we have to be realistic and good to ourselves in balance.  Also, Tamie has hit a milestone with her workouts - something I will not even strive to do, but admire her for it.

This week I speak with Carla, who is practising Intermittent Fasting. It was recently Thanksgiving in Canada and one of the first times we were able to get together with more than just a couple of family members. Admittedly, Carla didn't follow her IF schedule and now is looking at how she faltered, what the circumstances were as well as creating a plan to get back to her very short eating windows. We also spoke about the Instagram group Carla was in - just gluten free - where one ingredient is highlighted each week by members of the group. Recently it was Legumes. The group chooses a unique hashtag for each group of ingredient recipes. To see Carla's contributions and see the weekly hashtags follow her at celiac_and_the_suburbs.

This week I talk with Tamie about her plans for exercising and running going forward.  We also look at how Weight Watchers introduced boundaries to help make food choices, but did it in a gradual way.  Making gluten free choices, must be all in, but the journey to choose healthier gluten free choices is often long.  We also chat about our obsession with chicken wings in the air fryer - maybe not a strict low calorie food, but definately a good gluten free alternative for a lower-in-fat treat!

This week I speak with Carla about the changing seasons, but quickly the conversation pivots to some of the negativity we all put up with surrounding the gluten free diet. Carla recalls how she once left her family in a restaurant because she was frustrated with others not understanding the seriousness of the diet. I also mentioned the BBC show Saturday Kitchen, which has caused a great deal of controversy because a celebrity chef minimized the gluten free diet and actually served bread to a celiac. Here's a link to find out more.

This week's conversation about Intermittent Fasting with Carla centres on an instagram post from someone I admire greatly in the celiac world. Selena DeVries is a Registered Dietitian who I know from interviews on my other podcast "A Canadian Celiac Podcast" and her work with the Canadian Celiac Association. Selena works mostly with celiacs who have ongoing or persistent symtoms once they start the gluten free diet. Recently Selena posted her opinions on the gluten free diet for those with celiac disease. Carla and I break down the points Selena brings up and give our opinions as well. You can follow Selena at celiac_dietitican and you can follow Carla at celiac_and_the_suburbs.

This week I talk with Carla about working out.  We both reminisce about when we were younger and able to work out without very soon injuring ourselves.  We've learned that celiac disease was often the culprit behind our bone/muscle weakness.  Nevertheless, as we get older, we can't exercise with our bodies, as well as we can imagine in our minds, and even though we are eating better and healthier, we (or at least Carla and I) are still prone to injury.  We each try and formulate a plan for going forward, so at least we see a way, and hopefully have the will.  Carla has discovered Brazillian cheese bread, and she can actually fit in her down days with intermittent fasting.

This week, as the summer weather is settling in, both Sara and Tamie are well entrenched in their workout schedules, something that is  relatively new for Sara, and something that has a history for Tamie.  Hearing and talking about exercise is often uncomfortable for those of us who have some difficulties finding an exercise we can do safely and consistently.  Sara is facing another challenge with a changing work schedule, and Tamie, who loves physical challenges has set herself up with a substantial one.

This week I catch up with Carla who is trying to settle into a healthful formula for her Up and Down days.  I have, on the other hand taken to counting calories (some might find this cringe worthy) and I like it!  Also I let Carla in on one of my favourite low cal treats - pappadums.  I use the Patak's brand, as well as  the Jeera Wafer - mostly these are found in the grocery store near the curry pastes and east indian foods.

This week I speak to Sara and Tamie about some things they are working on changing.  Sara is sleeping better, something many of us strive for.  She takes us through some of the little changes she's made and how she's found cycling as a good solitary exercise.  Tamie is excited about summer, except that it throws her exercise schedule off at a time when we want to be active and outside.  She is trying to find her groove with timing her workouts to get more enjoyment out of them, while still leaving plenty of time with the family's summer activities.

This week I chat with Carla.  We are both using intermittent fasting to lose weight.  Carla recently listened to the audio book by Dr. Michael Mosely, The Fast 800.  She decided to incorporate some of those strategies into her weekly planning.  She was very successful.  On the other hand, I'm finding more that doesn't work for me.  Specifically trying a low calorie day on a stressful day.  Carla talks me through some ways I can switch things up, and I'm looking forward to applying them.  Also, I talk about someone I know who is on a positive weight loss path after getting dental appliances.  You can find out more about Dr. Mosely's book at -

This week I talk to Sara and Tamie. The conversations are very different. Sara is trying to settle into a new work schedule and is having difficulty balancing work and family. She is also struggling with her goal to eat more vegetables. Tamie is re-examining her priorities and isn't necessarily looking forward to going back to the old "normal". She is realizing how over-committed she was and how she was always trying to keep up. Maybe after the pandemic is over, we have the opportunity to re-shape our work/life/family balance. Tamie is trying to be creative with meals, and I suggested two bloggers who are a tremendous help to me with fresh gluten free recipes. Here are the links -

This week I chat with Carla.  We both made a mistake, that we told ourselves we wouldn't make.  Now we are looking to get back on track.  Last summer we both tried alternate day fasting.  We take a look at how this works for each of us, and we are committing to trying it for at least the next couple of weeks.  There are different ways to structure alternate day fasting, and likely Carla and I will be doing things a bit differently.

This week I chat with Tamie and Sara.  Tamie reports on her switchup challenge.  So far her best success has been with side dishes in meals.  She is going to try and switch up proteins in meals before we chat again.  Sara has changed her duties at work again and is trying to adjust to a less physically active job.  Sara and I also talk about May being Celiac Awareness Month and how giving gluten free to a foodbank might be a good way to celebrate.  Also check out my recipe videos on May 16th on the The Canadian Celiac Association's Facebook page andtheir website at www.celiac.ca.

This week I chat to Carla about how she's getting on with her intermittent fasting lifestyle. Carla is on a relatively short eating window and we discuss how she copes with that.  We also talk about something that got very mixed reaction from Carla when I mentioned it recently - her family's pizza oven. Carla talks about the pitfalls of using a pizza oven for gluten free and how she has almost given up on it. Between the two of us we come up with some alternate cooking uses for the pizza oven.  You can find Carla on instagram at celiac_and_the_suburbs.

This week I chat with both Sara and Tamie.  Sara is struggling to get rid of a cold, and Tamie is struggling to get rid of winter weather.  I talk to both ladies about stalls in their weight management.  We talk what a stall is to them, and how to change course.  I wasn't very demanding on Sara, as she is still not feeling well, but I did give Tamie the challenge to switch up or tighten up at least two meals or portions of meals a week over the next two weeks.

This week I chat with Sara and Tamie about their fitness routines, which both involve the gym, but in practice are very different.  Sara is settling into a weekly routine that includes school for the kids along with work and workouts for her.  She is even noticing some difference in the mirror.  Tamie talks about her ongoing fitness challenge and we frame other goals around challenges.  We discuss how Weight Watchers structures their maintenance program and I suggest some motivating change-ups.

This week I chat with Sara and Tamie.  They are both excited to back into an exercise routine, but are approaching it in very different ways.  Sara loves the personal challenge of making it to the gym at an early hour, and actually going in when her body is telling her to turn around and go back to bed.  Tamie, on the other hand is very competitive and continually sets new challenges for herself with exercise and healthy habits.  Sara is rationing the gluten free doughnuts in her freezer and Tamie is setting up to drink plenty of water each day.

This week I speak with Sara and Tamie about their end of summer exercise routines, doughnuts in the freezer and a water challenge.  Sara is enjoying seasonal produce with toasted tomato sandwiches and enjoying getting back to her gym for some "me" time.  Tamie is striving to balance her exercise and eating.  She is also in a "water challenge" with a friend.  They are each tasked with drinking water equal to half their weight in ounces.  I'll see how she does in a couple of weeks.

This week marks Episode 100! I decided to have all three of my co-hosts on together to talk about how being on a weight-loss podcast about eating gluten free has changed their personal journeys.  We had lots of fun, as the co-hosts had never met, or even seen each other, but for this episode we met with both audio and video on a zoom meeting.  It felt a little like getting together with long-time girlfriends with a dash of "Brady Bunch" visuals.  It was fun for everyone to meet virtually, not only to catch up but to share.

Unfortunately Carla was "glutened" the day before we spoke, but it gave us an opportunity to both acknowledge that occasionally this will happen, even on a strict gluten free diet, as well as to explore ways to cope.  Carla and I also chat about what we wish we knew when we started intermittent fasting that we've learned along the way.

Carla longs for proper pizza, but it must be gluten free.  We try and get close to what she's looking for.  We also discuss some of the unexpected health benefits we've seen from intermittent fasting.  Here's the link to my pizza recipe -

This week I talk with Carla about how she is doing her best coping with stress. It seems to be a theme these days, as more people are home and life isn't normal, and we're not sure how the next few months are going to look. Carla is determined to stay with intermittent fasting, and for the most part is practicing one meal a day (OMAD). I have been intermittent fasting for more than three months at this point and was hitting a plateau. Carla and I discuss my decision to try out longer fasts twice a week this month. So far, it's something that seems to be working for me. Carla mentioned the app she uses to track her fasts - the Life app. The YouTube channel I speak about is Keto Rewind at -

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSIhdpTAEdg2jPcsA7dU8JA

and in particular the video that got me hooked was about Alternate Day Fasting. You can find that at -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvwNqA-BK7U&t=280s

I'm looking forward to updating Carla and our listeners on my progress with my June fasting strategy in a couple of weeks!

This week I speak with Tamie and Sara.  Not surprisingly, they are both somewhat weary of the pandemic, missing out, re-opening procedures, school online and underlying ongoing fear.  Tamie sort of celebrated her son's graduation, while Sara struggled with an unexpected family illness.  Both are trying to cope with the different stresses in their lives and are trying to be mindful of self-care.  We are all weary of the current situation, and hopefully there will be some light ahead soon.
