In this special In Conversation episode, Bruce and Kris McGregor speak with Sr. Joan Mueller, a scholar of systematic theology and Christian spirituality at Creighton University, about the life and witness of St. Clare of Assisi. Drawing from her work on Clare, the early Franciscan movement, and Clare’s letters to St. Agnes of Prague, Sr. Joan presents Clare as a woman of extraordinary courage, intelligence, tenderness, and spiritual clarity. Born into nobility in the violent and unstable world of the thirteenth century, Clare rejected the security, status, and arranged future expected of her and embraced the radical poverty of the Gospel. Her decision to leave her family, receive the cutting of her hair from St. Francis, and take refuge in religious life was not romantic idealism, but a profound act of freedom and fidelity to Christ.
The conversation explores the Franciscan charism of poverty, the essential partnership between Francis and Clare, and Clare’s lifelong struggle to preserve what she called the “privilege of poverty.” Sr. Joan explains how Clare’s monastery at San Damiano was not an escape from the world, but a place of prayer, healing, counsel, and hospitality for the poor who lived around it. Through her poverty, Clare became free to serve, free to pray, and free to love with remarkable gentleness. Her life reveals that Franciscan poverty is not emptiness, but a gift that continues to give. This episode offers a moving portrait of St. Clare as a contemplative woman whose love for Christ became concrete care for the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable.
In her writings on St. Clare of Assisi, including Clare of Assisi: The Letters to Agnes and Clare’s Letters to Agnes, Sr. Joan Mueller helps readers enter the world of early Franciscan spirituality through Clare’s own voice and relationships. These works illuminate Clare’s deep commitment to poverty, contemplation, ecclesial fidelity, and the feminine expression of Franciscan life.
Through Clare’s correspondence with St. Agnes of Prague, readers encounter two noble women who renounced power and wealth to follow Christ in poverty. Their friendship and spiritual partnership reveal the depth of Clare’s wisdom, her courage in negotiating with Church authority, and her determination to protect the charism entrusted to her. These letters remain a powerful window into the heart of Franciscan spirituality and the radical freedom of a life wholly given to God.
Discerning Hearts Reflection Question1. How does St. Clare’s courage challenge me to follow Christ more freely, even when His call disrupts my expectations? 2. What attachments to comfort, security, or reputation might the Lord be inviting me to surrender? 3. How does Clare’s embrace of poverty reveal a deeper freedom to love, serve, and pray? 4. In what ways do I separate contemplation from love of the poor, and how might Clare help me hold them together? 5. How does the partnership between St. Francis and St. Clare deepen my understanding of the shared mission of men and women in the Church? 6. Where do I see the “privilege of poverty” at work in my own life, not as deprivation, but as trust in God? 7. How can my home, parish, or community become a place of prayer, counsel, healing, and hospitality for those in need? 8. What does Clare’s friendship with St. Agnes of Prague teach me about spiritual friendship and mutual encouragement in holiness? 9. How does Clare’s life invite me to greater tenderness toward the sick, the poor, and those who are mentally or emotionally burdened? 10. What is one concrete way I can live more simply this week to love Christ and others more generously?

Fr. John Horgan – His Angels At Our Side on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorIn this special episode of Inside the Pages, Kris McGregor interviews the late Fr. John Horgan about his book His Angels at Our Side: Understanding Their Power in Our Souls and in the World. Focusing on the role of angels in the spiritual life, Fr. Horgan explains how they guide, protect, and inspire us.
It’s important for us to understand angels as spiritual beings who reflect the majesty of God rather than projecting our human traits onto them. Fr. Horgan discusses the relationship between humans and their guardian angels, noting that these angels are given by God to guide and protect every soul, not just the baptized. He advises against naming angels, as their names and missions come directly from God.
Angels are models of prayer and adoration, constantly gazing upon God. They can teach us how to deepen our relationship with God, especially through prayer, obedience, and silence. While angels don’t usually communicate with us through mystical experiences, they offer daily guidance and inspiration; encouraging a spirit of openness to the guardian angel’s influence through prayer and attentiveness to their subtle promptings.
They also cover the role of angels in the Mass, where they worship alongside us, and how we can invite them into our prayer life, especially during the Eucharistic Prayer. Fr. Horgan explains that angels help us align our wills with God’s and overcome temptations, and reflects on the angels’ relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary and their role in leading us closer to her and her perfect acceptance of God’s will.

Fr. Christopher Collins S.J. – Habits of Freedom on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorFr. Christopher Collins discusses his book “Habits of Freedom” with Kris McGregor, focusing on how Ignatian spirituality can be applied to daily life. Fr. Collins outlines five key practices from St. Ignatius’ teachings that help individuals clear their minds and find rest in the Lord. He highlights the importance of recognizing and responding to the movements of both the Holy Spirit and the evil spirit in daily life.
Fr. Collins explains that the Ignatian rules for discernment are not just for retreats but are meant for everyday living, guiding people to discern the subtle movements within their hearts. The discernment of spirits involves understanding whether our thoughts and feelings are from God, from our own psychology, or from the evil spirit. This understanding helps us live more freely and with authentic love.
He also addresses the significance of the examen prayer, a daily practice that involves reflecting on one’s day to recognize moments of grace and areas needing growth. This practice encourages remembering one’s true identity as a beloved child of God, fostering a deep sense of freedom and peace.
Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. Daily Discernment Practice: How can I incorporate the Ignatian practice of daily discernment into my routine to better recognize the movements of the Holy Spirit and the evil spirit in my life? 2. Identity in Christ: In what ways do I struggle to remember and accept my identity as a beloved child of God? 3. Responding to Disruptions: How do I typically respond to disruptions in my life, and how can I be more open to seeing these as opportunities for spiritual growth? 4. Dialogue Over Monologue: Are there areas in my life where I am stuck in negative self-talk, and how can I bring these thoughts into the light through dialogue with God or others? 5. Examen Prayer Integration: Can I set aside a specific time each day to practice the examen prayer, reflecting on the day’s events and my responses to them? 6. Rejecting Lies: What are some of the lies I tend to believe about myself, and how can I replace them with the truth of God’s love and purpose for me? 7. Spiritual Companionship: Who in my life can I trust to share my spiritual journey with, helping me to see God’s work more clearly and avoid isolation? 8. Living Out Freedom: How can I actively practice authentic freedom in my daily interactions, choosing love and generosity over self-centeredness? 9. Balancing Action and Contemplation: How can I find a balance between active engagement in the world and taking time for quiet reflection and prayer? 10. Revisiting Baptismal Promises: How often do I reflect on my baptismal identity and the unconditional love of God proclaimed over me in that sacrament?

Fr. Aaron Wessman – The Church’s Mission in a Polarized World, Part 2 on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorIn Part 2 of a 2-part conversation, Fr. Aaron Wessman and Kris McGregor discusses the challenges of living a Christian life in a polarized world, particularly the influence of social media and group dynamics. They explore how societal divisions amplify an “us versus them” mentality, which can distort one’s ability to live out Gospel values such as unity and love.
Fr. Wessman points out that while the church’s mission is to unite humanity with God and among themselves, current political and social climates often encourage division. The concept of “negative polarization,” where people are driven more by opposition to the other party rather than support for their own, is identified as a significant challenge. Politicians can manipulate this by stoking anger, leading Christians away from Gospel values like peace, patience, and kindness.
There is an importance of personal responsibility in bridging divides. The church’s mission, exemplified by figures like Jesus and St. Francis, involves crossing over to the “other” and engaging with people on the margins of society—whether they are of different races, cultures, or political views—rather than isolating oneself in a comfortable bubble. Advocating for “missional discipleship,” where Christians are called to be sent out into the world to engage with others in love, not to be conformed by the divisions in the world.
Fr. Wessman discusses the necessity of engaging with others humbly and courageously while being anchored in the Eucharist. He highlights that Christians are not called to withdraw from the world but to confront challenges by discerning the Spirit’s lead and engaging in “ministries of presence.” The Eucharist strengthens this mission, empowering Christians to be Christ’s presence to others.
They also address the need for humility and forgiveness in personal relationships, especially in areas of polarization within families, parishes, and even among fellow Catholics. Fr. Wessman encourages a culture of mercy and repentance, suggesting that real growth happens when people acknowledge mistakes, ask for forgiveness, and adjust their actions to better reflect Christ’s teachings.
You can find the book here.
Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. How does social media affect your joy and spiritual life? Reflect on whether your engagement with social media fosters peace or leads to anger and despair. 2. Are you aware of the “us versus them” mentality in your interactions? Consider how group dynamics may be shaping your perspective and distancing you from others. 3. Is your political engagement rooted in the Church’s teachings? Evaluate whether your political views and actions are guided by Catholic social teaching or influenced by polarization. 4. Do you actively seek to cross over to the “other”? Reflect on how you can engage with those on the margins, following Christ’s example of crossing boundaries. 5. Are you anchored in the Eucharist? Examine how often you return to the Eucharist to strengthen your mission and align your life with Christ’s presence. 6. Do you recognize when to engage and when to withdraw? Reflect on the discernment needed to know when to engage others and when to retreat for prayer and renewal. 7. How do you foster unity within the Church and community? Fr. Aaron Wessman – The Church’s Mission in a Polarized World, Part 1 on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorIn Part 1 of a 2-part conversation, Fr. Aaron Wessman and Kris McGregor discuss Fr. Aaron’s book ‘The Church’s Mission in a Polarized World‘. Fr. Aaron explains how the project grew from a personal journey after returning to the U.S. from studying theology abroad. Upon his return, he noticed a worsening division in American society and within the Church, which also affected him personally. This led him to research the issue and eventually write the book, which examines how polarization impacts Christians.
Christians, particularly in the U.S., are influenced by polarized political and social dynamics. Fr. Aaron describes this “hurricane of polarization” as something that often affects how people engage with others, making it harder to follow Christ’s call to love and dialogue. With this book, he calls for Christians to step back from political hostility and gain perspective through faith, using Christ’s example of engaging even those considered enemies.
Political partisanship and the language of culture wars have entered the Church, using war-like metaphors that can distance believers from the Gospel’s true message of love and reconciliation. Fr. Aaron highlights the importance of choosing words carefully, suggesting that Christians focus on prudence and listening, aiming to understand rather than attack.
He invites Christians to prioritize their identity in Christ over political affiliations. Fr. Aaron encourages humility, dialogue, and discernment as ways to navigate an increasingly polarized world, drawing connections to historical figures like St. Francis de Sales, who responded to similar challenges with wisdom and charity.

Fr. John Bartunek – The Better Part: The Gospels pt. 2 on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorIn part 2 of their conversation, Fr. John Bartunek and Kris McGregor discuss deepening one’s relationship with God through prayer, using Fr. Bartunek’s book, The Better Part, as a central resource. They explore the importance of the fourth step of prayer, “commit,” which is about renewing one’s commitment to the relationship with God after a time of prayer, much like a mother responds to her child’s needs in a relationship.
Prayer is not about seeking spiritual consolations but about faith and deepening friendship with God. Warning against using prayer merely to seek internal experiences rather than genuine contact with God, Fr. Bartunek compares some non-Christian meditation practices as potentially distracting from true prayer.
Highlighting the unique role of the Gospels as a direct encounter with Jesus, meant to be rediscovered continually with a sense of wonder, Fr. Bartunek’s work is praised for helping believers engage deeply with the Gospels, not just as sacred texts, but as an ongoing dialogue with Christ. The discussion also touches on the significance of spiritual companionship, community, and sharing one’s spiritual journey with others, as well as the necessity of a spiritual director or good spiritual friends to help navigate the challenges of prayer and spiritual growth.

Fr. John Bartunek – The Better Part: The Gospels pt. 1 on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorKris McGregor and Fr. John Bartunek discuss the book series, The Better Part, which is a Christ-centered resource for personal prayer based on the Gospels. They discuss the inspiration behind the series, which originated as a directive from Fr. Bartunek’s religious order, the Legionnaires of Christ. They identified a need for a resource that would help people deepen their prayer life in the modern world.
The Better Part is designed not as a traditional scripture study, but as a tool to foster personal encounters with Christ through the Gospels. The approach is rooted in the idea that the Gospels are a place to encounter Christ and enter into dialogue with Him. The series offers a structure that guides readers through meditation on the Gospels, helping them engage in mental prayer that is personalized and unique to their own spiritual journey.
The importance of understanding Christian meditation offers a simple, yet profound, four-step process: concentrate, consider, converse, and commit. Each step is meant to help the individual enter into a deeper relationship with Christ, utilizing different aspects of the soul—will, intellect, and heart.
Fr. Bartunek also discusses the influences of various spiritual traditions, such as Ignatian, Benedictine, and Carmelite spirituality, in shaping the structure of the series.

Fr. Paul Hamans – Edith Stein and Companions on the Way to Auschwitz on Inside the PagesIn this episode of “Inside the Pages”, Fr. Paul Hamans discusses with Kris McGregor his book Edith Stein and Companions on the Way to Auschwitz, which chronicles the lives of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) and 113 other Catholic Jews who were martyred by the Nazis in retaliation for a pastoral letter written by Dutch bishops protesting the Nazi regime.
Fr. Hamans, a Church history professor in the Netherlands, reminds listeners of the importance of remembering these martyrs, whose sacrifices were both an act of faith and a stand against Nazi atrocities. He highlights the deep spiritual significance of these lives, their willingness to suffer for their faith, and the ongoing legacy of their witness. In addition, he addresses the impact of the Dutch bishops’ resistance, the persecution faced by Jewish converts to Catholicism, and the profound example set by Edith Stein and others who embraced their crosses in service to God and the Church.
You can buy a copy of the book here.
Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. Sacrifice and Faith: How do the sacrifices of Edith Stein and her companions inspire you to deepen your own faith and commitment to Christ? 2. Witness of Martyrdom: What lessons can you draw from the courage of the Catholic martyrs in standing against injustice, even at the cost of their lives? 3. Legacy of Resistance: How does the Dutch bishops’ resistance to Nazi atrocities challenge you to speak out against modern-day injustices? 4. Spiritual Resilience: In what ways can you embrace and carry your own crosses in your daily life, following the example of these martyrs? 5. Hope in Eternal Life: How does the focus on eternal life, as emphasized by Fr. Hamans, influence your perspective on the challenges and sufferings you face?
From the Book’s Description:
“On the same summer day in 1942, Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) and hundreds of other Catholic Jews were arrested in Holland by the occupying Nazis. One hundred thirteen of those taken into custody, several of them priests and nuns, perished at Auschwitz and other concentration camps. They were murdered in retaliation for the anti-Nazi pastoral letter written by the Dutch Catholic bishops.
While Saint Teresa Benedicta is the most famous member of this group, having been canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1998, all of them deserve the title of martyr, for they were killed not only because they were Jews but also because of the faith of the Church, which had compelled the Dutch bishops to protest the Nazi regime.
Through extensive research in both original and secondary sources, P.W.F.M. Hamans has compiled these martyrs’ biographies, several of them detailed and accompanied by photographs. Included in this volume are some remarkable conversion stories, including that of Edith Stein, the German philosopher who had entered the Church in 1922 and later became a Carmelite nun, taking the name Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.
Several of the witnesses chronicled here had already suffered for their faith in Christ before falling victim to Hitler’s “Final Solution”, enduring both rejection by their own people, including family members, and persecution by the so-called Christian society in which they lived. Among these were those who, also like Sister Teresa Benedicta, perceived the cross they were being asked to bear and accepted it willingly for the salvation of the world.”
About the AuthorFr. Paul Hamans is a diocesan priest in Roermond, Netherlands, where he teaches Church history at the seminary there. He has a doctorate in history from the University of Augsburg, Germany, and is an expert on the Dutch martyrs of the twentieth century. His other publications include History of the Catholic Church in the Netherlands.

Sr. Regina van den Berg – Communion with Christ according to St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorIn this episode of “Inside the Pages”, Sr. Regina van den Berg joins in conversation with Kris McGregor about Sr. Regina’s book, Communion with Christ. Focusing on the life and spirituality of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, also known as Edith Stein, Sr. Regina shares how she first became interested in Edith Stein after being encouraged to read her works when she took the religious habit. Edith Stein’s journey from a Jewish background to Catholicism, and eventually to becoming a Carmelite nun, serves as a central theme in the conversation.
Sr. Regina explains that Edith Stein, influenced by her philosophical background and personal experiences, offers profound insights into suffering, empathy, and the vocation of both men and women; as well as the contrast between community and association; that true communion involves a deep, personal connection with others and with God, unlike associations formed merely for a specific goal.
You can find the book here.
Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. Understanding Communion with Christ: How does St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross deepen your understanding of true communion with Christ, especially through embracing the cross? 2. The Role of Suffering in Faith: In what ways can you find meaning and consolation in your own suffering by uniting it with the suffering of Christ? 3. Empathy and Communion: How can the practice of empathy, as described by St. Teresa Benedicta, enhance your relationships with others and deepen your spiritual life? 4. Identity and God’s Will: Are you at peace with who God created you to be, and how do you surrender your will to align with God’s will in your daily life? 5. Community versus Association: How does your participation in your community reflect true communion, rather than just an association with a shared goal?
From the Book’s Description:
“Pope Saint John Paul II declared that the great challenge for Christians today is to become “the home and school of communion.”St. Teresa Benedicta (Edith Stein) is a sure guide to attaining the communion for which every human heart longs. This work considers St. Teresa’s life and writings in the context of the “spirituality of communion”. As a philosopher she was directed towards attaining communion with the Truth, and she discovered that Truth was a Person, Jesus Christ. As a Carmelite nun she gave up everything for communion with him.
Dr. Alice von Hildebrand, in the foreword, says Edith Stein’s message “is above her time” and that the author, Sister M. Regina van den Berg, F.S.G.M. “is well qualified to write such a book.” Sister Regina explores in detail Edith Stein’s theory of empathy as developed in her doctoral dissertation, as well as her later theory of community. Sister Regina has also used a number of Edith Stein’s writings that, until this work, have not yet been available in English translation.
Each chapter explores an aspect of “communion”, richly revealing the wisdom of Edith Stein, “a Jew who became a philosopher . . . a convert to Catholicism who became a Carmelite nun and crowned her life with martyrdom”. Stein’s work “provides insights that can help us to grow in the spirituality of communion, first by presenting to us the truth about the human person’s nature and vocation and then by showing us how we can arrive at a spirituality of communion in the various aspects of life.”

Adam Blai on “The History of Exorcism,” Part Two – Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorIn part two of our conversation, Adam Blai and Kris McGregor discuss the nature of spiritual warfare and deliverance, emphasizing the central role of sacramental life and personal conversion. Adam Blai explains that 90% of the enemy’s actions are temptations, which can be effectively countered through the sacraments like confession, mass, baptism, and confirmation. Deliverance primarily comes through these sacraments and genuine personal transformation, rather than dramatic prayers or rituals. True deliverance requires a sincere turn towards God and away from sin, with the person actively participating in their spiritual growth and repentance.
Blai highlights that even in cases of possession, the goal is spiritual growth and conversion, not just relief from suffering. Exorcism is a liturgical act aimed at guiding individuals towards a life of faith, repentance, and forgiveness. Forgiving others and oneself is crucial, as demons can exploit unforgiveness to maintain their hold. And the historical context of exorcism in the church, noting that it evolved over centuries and has become more regulated to ensure proper and safe practice.
The importance of the church’s authority and wisdom in handling exorcisms, cautioning against individuals attempting exorcisms without proper authorization and training. Blai advises those facing spiritual issues to seek help from their parish priests or diocesan offices and stresses that the focus should always be on Jesus, not the devil. The ultimate message is one of hope and trust in God’s love and the transformative power of a life centered on Christ.
You can find the book here.
Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. Understanding the Enemy’s Strategies: How does recognizing that 90% of the enemy’s actions are temptations change your approach to spiritual warfare? 2. Role of Sacraments in Deliverance: In what ways have you experienced the power of sacramental grace in your life, especially through confession and the Eucharist? 3. Personal Conversion and Deliverance: Reflect on a time when personal conversion and repentance brought you closer to God. How did this impact your spiritual struggles? 4. Forgiveness as a Path to Freedom: How can you practice forgiveness towards others and yourself to prevent spiritual oppression? 5. Historical Context of Exorcism: How does understanding the historical development of exorcism in the Church deepen your appreciation for its current practice and regulation? 6. Authority and Wisdom in Exorcism: Why is it important for the Church to regulate who performs exorcisms, and how does this safeguard both the practitioner and the person in need? 7. Focus on Christ, Not the Devil: How can you ensure that your spiritual life remains Christ-centered and not overly focused on fear of the devil? 8. Seeking Help within the Church: When facing spiritual difficulties, how can you effectively seek help from your parish priest or diocesan offices?
From the book description:
“Due to the advancement of observable evil in our society, the topic of exorcism has increasingly come to the forefront in the West in this century. In Hollywood movies, exorcism has often been sensationalized and misconstrued. Although volumes have been written about demons and exorcism, little has been explained about what solemn exorcism really is within the larger context of deliverance ministry. But now, Church-decreed expert on demonology and exorcism Adam Blai thoroughly explores the roots of exorcism and breaks open its significance for you.
You will find answers to wide-ranging questions such as: Is possession an exclusively Christian phenomenon, or is it a universal problem? Did exorcism exist before Jesus, or did He introduce it? If it predated Christianity, how did other cultures see it and deal with it? How do other world religions view the phenomenon of possession and exorcism? Are there other methods of confronting it besides the Catholic rite?
Blai lays out how exorcisms were performed in the earliest days of the Church. Over time, a liturgical rite was developed and teachings were provided to safeguard the faithful in the practice of exorcisms.
In these pages, Blai reveals:
- Twenty-one guidelines for exorcists, produced under St. Charles Borromeo
- Fascinating examples of actual exorcisms (some made famous in movies!)
- Astounding examples of how saints helped drive out demons (even from the great beyond!)
- Which psalm is known for offering protection and deliverance from evil spirits (Can you guess?)
- The revolutionary way in which Jesus performed exorcisms
You will learn about how a harpist helped deliver King Saul of an evil spirit and how the spirits of giants tormented people. As you read about the evolution of exorcism, you will observe how strange practices sometimes occurred through the use of magic and superstition. You will also find five exorcism guidelines from the Middle Ages and four signs of genuine possession today.
Additionally, you will see how the 1614 rite of exorcism differs from the 1998 rite. You will also find a helpful appendix about how to determine whether a disturbance is spiritual, mental, or medical. Extensive references are included throughout the book.”

Adam Blai on “The History of Exorcism,” Part One – Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorIn Part 1 of this conversation, Adam Blai discusses with Kris McGregor the history and practice of exorcism. Adam Blai emphasizes the importance of understanding the context and history of exorcism to demystify misconceptions often perpetuated by media. He explains that exorcism has been a part of human history since ancient times and that it involves a range of prayers, with solemn exorcism being qualitatively different from deliverance prayers.
He shares his journey into this ministry, highlighting his background in psychology and how his curiosity about spiritual phenomena led him to work with exorcists. He clarifies that as a layperson, his role is to train and coach priests, not to perform exorcisms himself. The conversation covers the development of institutes like the Pope Leo XIII Institute, which train exorcists and their teams, emphasizing the need for proper order and protection in this ministry.
He touches on the use of Psalms in exorcism rituals, the distinction between possession and other forms of spiritual oppression, and the rigorous process required to determine if a solemn exorcism is necessary and of relying on documented signs of possession rather than subjective discernment to ensure the appropriate response and the crucial role of the bishop in granting permission for solemn exorcisms.

Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. God’s Omnipresence in History How does viewing history through God’s omnipresence change our perception of historical events and figures? 2. Early Christian Influences In what ways can we see early Christian influences in England’s history and culture? 3. Catholic Roots in Literature How do the works of poets like Chaucer and Shakespeare reflect the Catholic roots of England? 4. Resilience of English Catholics What lessons can we learn from the resilience of English Catholics during periods of persecution? 5. Language and Culture Blend How has the blend of languages and cultures in English history shaped modern English? 6. Inspiration from Historical Faith How can the historical examples of faith and perseverance inspire our own spiritual journey? 8. Legacy of Catholic England In what ways does the cultural legacy of Catholic England continue to impact the world today?
From the book description:
“The Catholic Church has been a part of English history since the arrival of Christian missionaries to Roman Britain in the first century after Christ. England was evangelized in these early centuries to such an extent that, by the time the Romans withdrew in the fifth century, the Celtic population was largely Catholic.
Anglo-Saxon England, prior to the Norman Conquest, was a land of saints. From St. Bede, with his history of the early Church, to the holy king St. Edward the Confessor, Saxon England was ablaze with the light of Christ. During the reign of St. Edward, a vision of the Virgin at Walsingham placed the Mother of God on the throne as England’s queen, the land being considered her dowry. Even following the Norman Conquest, the Faith continued to flourish and prosper, making its joyful presence felt in what would become known as Merrie England.
Then in the sixteenth century, this Catholic heart was ripped from the people of England, against their will and in spite of their spirited and heroic resistance, by the reign of the Tudors. This made England once again a land of saints—that is, of martyrs, with Catholic priests and laity being put to death for practicing the Faith. The martyrdoms would continue for 150 years, followed by a further 150 years of legal and political persecution.
In the nineteenth century, against all the odds, there was a great Catholic revival, heralded by the conversion of St. John Henry Newman, which would continue into the twentieth century. Much of the greatest literature of the past century has been written by literary converts to the Church, such as G. K. Chesterton, Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, and J. R. R. Tolkien.
This whole exciting, faith-filled story is told by Joseph Pearce within a single-volume history of “true England”, the England that remained true to the faith through thick and thin, in times both “merrie” and perilous. It is a story not only worth telling but worth celebrating.”

We’re all starting to hear people ask how the world has gotten to be the way it is. Grafted onto the usual complaints about why people are so greedy, self-absorbed, and callous toward one another are new expressions of frustration about even more fundamental concerns. Why can’t we agree on concepts that used to be basic common sense? Why does our very language now seem to be a minefield that only the most wily and tactical (or cynical) among us can navigate?
The only way to understand fully how we have arrived at this state — and what, if anything, we might be able to do about it — is to embark on a journey back in time to see where we went off the rails. With candor and occasional humor, Dan LeRoy tells the sweeping story of Western thought from its beginnings to the present, revealing the souls and idiosyncrasies of its greatest thinkers. Through stirring vignettes, he tells the real story of how our customs and thought patterns developed and then relates it to our current moment of rupture.
In pages that sometimes read like an Indiana Jones adventure, LeRoy explains the detour that philosophy took nearly a thousand years ago that has led Western society to its current, dire situation. With sharp pen and clear eye, he reveals:
- The roots of classical philosophy, including empiricism (Ready to wade into the water?)
- How views on ethics and morality began to take shape even before Christ
- The three ways to attain happiness, according to the Big Three philosophers
- Four splinter groups and how their philosophies impact us today
- The enduring teachings of Sts. Augustine and Aquinas, among many others
About the AuthorDan LeRoy is an author, journalist and teacher who has been the director of the Writing and Publishing Department at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Midland, Pennsylvania, since 2006. His writing about music and politics has appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, the Village Voice, Alternative Press, Esquire, and National Review Online.

Spiritual Masters: Living and Praying in the Catholic Tradition by Archbishop Emeritus Alfred Hughes on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorKris McGregor discusses with Archbishop Hughes his recently published book, “Spiritual Masters: Living and Praying in the Catholic Tradition.” Archbishop Hughes explains that the book was inspired by a widespread desire for deeper spiritual engagement and a lack of knowledge on how to pursue it more meaningfully, in addition to the importance of moving beyond mere factual knowledge to gaining wisdom through reflection and divine guidance, advocating for an intellectual and spiritual conversion to deepen one’s faith and understanding.
They touch on the challenges posed by the digital age, which tends to keep people engaged only on a superficial level, and the necessity of creating reflective spaces to cultivate a deeper spiritual life. They also go into the significance of entering into solitude, as exemplified by St. Anthony of the Desert, and the role of spiritual direction in Christian life, a practice notably advanced by St. Anthony’s life and work.
Reflecting on the importance of not skipping the introductory sections of spiritual texts, as these often contain essential wisdom and guidance for reading the rest of the work; shifting from a student’s mindset to that of a disciple, seeking to learn and live out the teachings and wisdom found in spiritual writings.
You can find the book here.
Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions:1. Spiritual Exercises vs. Spiritual Understanding: Discuss how Archbishop Hughes’ book shifts from a typical biographical approach to a format that engages the reader in spiritual exercises. How does this approach challenge your understanding of spiritual reading? 2. Consequences of the Digital Age: Reflect on the Archbishop’s view that the digital age keeps us at the surface of life. How has technology affected your personal prayer life or your ability to engage deeply with your faith? 3. Knowledge versus Wisdom: The Archbishop differentiates between gathering knowledge and cultivating wisdom. Can you share an instance where you felt your spiritual knowledge transitioned into deeper wisdom? How did this impact your faith practices? 4. The Importance of Solitude: Why do you think solitude is emphasized as the starting point for spiritual growth in the podcast? Share your thoughts on how solitude can lead to a deeper spiritual life. 5. Spiritual Direction and Guidance: How important is spiritual direction in your life? Discuss the benefits and challenges of seeking and maintaining a relationship with a spiritual director. 6. Reflective Time and Intellectual Conversion: Archbishop Hughes stresses the need for reflective time as essential for wisdom and spiritual conversion. How can you implement or improve reflective practices in your daily routine? 7. Learning from Saints and Spiritual Masters: Which saint or spiritual master do you feel most connected to, and what have they taught you about living a faithful Christian life? Discuss how their example can be applied in today’s world. 8. The Role of Desire in Spiritual Life: Reflect on the role of desire in your spiritual journey. How does understanding and nurturing your spiritual desires influence your relationship with God? 9. Scripture as a Living Word: Discuss the concept of Scripture as a ‘love letter from God’. How does this perspective change the way you read and interact with the Bible? 10. The Impact of Spiritual Writings on Modern Life: Considering the diverse teachings and lives of the spiritual masters mentioned, how can their wisdom be effectively applied to address the challenges of modern Christian living?
From the book’s description:
“This book introduces the reader to thirteen Christian spiritual classics that illustrate the ordinary steps we can take toward living the Gospel life more fully.
Drawing on the rich teaching of a particular saint or mystic, each chapter helps us grow in a different aspect of holiness, of intimacy with God. Archbishop Hughes offers an itinerary for becoming a good disciple of the Lord, giving the reader access to an impressive spiritual library that can support and strengthen progress in discipleship throughout one’s life.
Among the great saints and spiritual writers whose writings are included in this book are Augustine, Anthony of the Desert, Aelred, Teresa of Avila, Benedict, Guigo, Catherine of Siena, Walter Hilton, Francis de Sales, Ignatius of Loyola, Jean-Pierre de Caussade, Thomas à Kempis, and John of the Cross.”

St. Bernadette, A Holy Life- In Conversation with Patricia McEachernPatricia McEachern, an associate professor of French at Drew University in Missouri, discusses her book “A Holy Life: The Writings of St. Bernadette of Lourdes” with Bruce and Kris McGregor. Patricia shares her fascination with St. Bernadette and her journey from being introduced to St. Bernadette through a movie to translating her letters and spiritual notebook. She shares personal experiences, including her visit to Lourdes, which ultimately led to her conversion to Catholicism.
“St. Bernadette, A Holy Life” shows readers St. Bernadette’s remarkable character beyond her portrayal in films, highlighting her humility, courage, and devotion to her vocation. Patricia also sheds light on Bernadette’s suffering, her family relationships, and her unwavering faith, revealing a deeper understanding of St. Bernadette’s life beyond the famous apparitions and her enduring impact as a role model for holiness.
You can find the book here.

Bernadette’s Humanity: How does Patricia McEachern’s discussion of St. Bernadette’s life reveal her humanity beyond her portrayal in films and popular culture? 2. Bernadette’s Devotion: What aspects of St. Bernadette’s devotion to her vocation and faith stand out to you? 3. Bernadette’s Suffering: In what ways did St. Bernadette endure suffering, both physically and emotionally, and how did she find meaning in it? 4. Bernadette’s Spiritual Growth: How did St. Bernadette’s spiritual journey evolve throughout her life, especially beyond the famous apparitions at Lourdes? 5. Spiritual Lessons: Consider the spiritual lessons and insights gained from Bernadette’s writings, as highlighted by Patricia. How might these lessons apply to your own spiritual journey?
From the book’s description:
“While the story of the apparitions of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes in 1858 are well known, relatively few people are familiar with the saint’s own spiritual insights and profound holiness. For the first time in English, this book presents a wide selection of St. Bernadette’s thoughts, advice, sayings, and prayers through the touching words of her spiritual diary, notes, and letters to friends and family.
After receiving the visions of Our Lady at the grotto in Lourdes, Bernadette eventually became a religious sister as a member of the Sisters of Charity. She lived a life of simplicity, charity, suffering and deep holiness, dying at the age of 35. When she was canonized a saint, her body was found to be incorrupt. In these beautiful writings of St. Bernadette, we learn the secrets of her holiness and happiness. Though she suffered greatly throughout her life, the heroic response of this humble, self-effacing nun transformed excruciating suffering into spiritual fruitfulness. Her letters and writings serve as a model for others passing through their own trials. Her writings reveal and intimate and profound love for God and neighbor. Anyone pursuing a deeper spiritual life will appreciate knowing Bernadette as she truly was, and the inspiring spiritual works of wisdom she offers to us all.”

It was a delight to talk once again to Dr. Kevin Vost. In his new book Three Irish Saints: A Guide to Finding Your Spiritual Style, he brings forward of 3 incredible saints who can help us bring about a greater awareness of ourselves, as well as bringing us closer to our relationship with God. Dr. Vost is a psychologist, and physical fitness expert who examines the lives of these three great saints reveals their gifts and virtues. He then explores the question: Are you a thinker, a doer, or a lover? Included is a simple self-test to find out which spiritual master you are most like. I was well aware of St. Patrick, knew much about St. Brigid, but was knew nothing about St. Kevin, but the list doesn’t stop there, Dr. Vost brings the lives of other Irish saints as well. A fun and fascinating read.

Joel Stepanek – Chasing Humility on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregorI cannot recommend this book and the work of Joel Stepanek more highly! Based on the great Litany of Humility, “Chasing Humility: 8 Ways to Shape a Christian Heart” is a game-changer in the formation of the Christian heart. It’s no wonder St. Teresa of Calcutta had her Missionaries of Charity pray this prayer every morning (and they still do)! It’s a challenging prayer when you first contemplate exactly what it is you are asking of the Lord. But if you trust in the fruits which it brings into your life, your spiritual journey will never be the same. Run, don’t walk, to get this book! A modern-day spiritual classic!
You can find this book here
“In Chasing Humility, Joel Stepanek does a masterful job giving the reader practical steps for cultivating authentic humility. Drawing on scripture, engaging stories, and good old common sense, this book is funny and wise, raw and relatable. Stepanek’s insights offer a soul-stirring read to any soul looking to improve. The question isn’t whether we need to be humble, but who can be humble enough to do something about it. This book is the perfect way to grow in holiness and ultimately, happiness, one achievable step at a time.” —Mark Hart, Executive Vice President, Life Teen International
“This book was like a punch to the gut—a much needed, very welcome, life-changing gut punch. It is bold, honest, and raw. Joel has given us an absolutely delightful read that is also really challenging, and it was just what we (and so many others) need to be reminded of the necessity to both seek humility and live and walk humbly with the Lord. Read this book. Absorb this book. Let Joel and his words on humility sucker-punch you and you’ll be so grateful.” —Katie Prejean McGrady and Tommy McGrady, Catholic speakers and cohosts of The Electric Waffle
“Joel Stepanek highlights for us the proper and sacred space of humility in the Christian life. Exploring the Litany of Humility, he provides a delightful roadmap for embracing the virtue not as a weakness but as a strength in our personal prayer lives and leadership outreach. There could not be a better time for leaders to be reintroduced to the virtue of humility in a world that very often values self-centeredness over seeing and supporting others.” —Rev. Dan Felton, Vicar General, Diocese of Green Bay

Dr. Peter Kreeft – Practical Theology on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregor“Practical Theology: Spiritual Direction from St. Thomas Aquinas” by Dr. Peter Kreeft is outstanding! An incredible work that transforms the potentially intimidating Summa Theologiae into a vital life-giving, soul-nurturing work for the pilgrim soul. Dr. Kreeft offers us the religious wisdom of Aquinas in 359 bite-size pieces that can aid our growth in holiness. He has framed these readings as answers to questions that people actually ask their spiritual directors. Each answer is taken word for word from Aquinas. So many topics are covered. You’ll be returning to this book over and over again throughout your spiritual journey. An excellent gift to give yourself and those you love! Highly Recommended!!!
You can find the book here
“Its notoriously difficult to synopsize Aquinas on anything. However, if I were to choose someone to do the job well, it would be Peter Kreeft. Many will find this presentation helpful to develop their own replies to the questions that bother the minds of today’s searchers.”
– Romanus Cessario, O.P., Saint John’s Seminary, Brighton, Mass.
“How can we know the living God and attain to everlasting union with God? This is really the only question of life. Kreeft’s dialogue with Aquinas shows us what it means–existentially, not solely academically–to learn from a saint.” —Matthew Levering, Professor of Theology, Mundelein Seminary

You can find the book here.
From the book description:
“The Apocalypse of the Sovereign Self is a collection of stories, fictional and factual, highlighting two themes: the autonomous self, now in a profound crisis; and the person, whose Christian sources and contours have too long been overlooked. The ongoing cultural and confessional evisceration of Christianity all too graphically proves the validity of Christ’s warning: “Apart from me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:5). For these words were addressed to the first Christians, and they now apply not only to Christians but also to those whose exposure to Christ has been merely cultural, those who mistakenly think that the spiritual resources that fostered and sustained the dignity of the human person will survive the renunciation of the faith that gave that dignity its salience.”
About the Author: Gil Bailie is the founder of The Cornerstone Forum, a founding member of The Colloquium on Violence and Religion, a member of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars, and Fellow of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology.

Fr. Basil Nortz on “Holy Silence: A Practical Guide to Recollection in God,” Part 2Join Kris McGregor as she continues her discussion on the book “Holy Silence: A Practical Guide to Recollection in God” with Fr. Basil Nortz in the conclusion of this two-part interview.
You can find the book here.
From the book description:
“Fr. Basil Nortz masterfully builds upon the classic reflections of Sr. Marie-Aimée de Jésus, a nineteenth-century spiritual mystic and Carmelite nun, on the twelve degrees of silence. By cultivating these types of silence, you will find out how you can — even amid your busy days filled with chatter, commotion, and noise — listen to the voice of God.
In these profound pages you will find ways to overcome your fear of silence and discover:
- Keys to obeying God’s will
- Kinds of silence that are holy and kinds that are unholy
- Ten tips on what to do — and what to avoid — to bridle your senses
- Seven ways to guard your imagination and foster recollection
- How to direct your emotions with reason and foster silence of the heart
- Effective ways of responding to injustice
You will learn the one sinful attitude that cuts us off from the merciful forgiveness of God and will acquire ways to stop passing judgment against others. Additionally, you will learn the most important attitude that disposes us to God’s plans and allows us to enter into His love and converse with Him affectionately throughout the day. Moreover, you will find practical techniques for overcoming distractions in prayer and advice from the saints on methods of meditation to develop silence of the spirit.
Above all, you will glean how to maintain peace of soul and live free from anxiety and despair, regardless of temptations or life’s battles. By relying totally on God, you will fearlessly rise after falls and begin again. You will begin to see the loving hand of God in all things, contemplate the light of His presence, and “be still” in the silence of His love.
“Holy silence is what helps the soul acquire the strength necessary to bear the presence of the all-pure God, who is ipsum esse subsistens (subsistent being itself),” explains Fr. Nortz. “The intensity of that fullness, far from inspiring languid inaction, produces a vibrant joyfulness that St. John expresses in the book of Revelation in terms of the saints singing with full voice.” “
About the Author: Reverend Basil Nortz, O.R.C., is a priest in the Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross. He graduated from Christendom College in 1986 with a B.A. in theology. His seminary studies were at the Insitutum Sapientiae in Anapolis, Brazil.

These are indeed good days for book lovers because we are so blessed to have yet another Christian spiritual classic broken open for us Dr. Peter Kreeft! In "I Burned for Your Peace: Augustine's Confessions Unpacked", Dr. Kreeft gives us a guided tour through one of the finest works in all Western literature. In our conversation we discuss how St. Augustine, in many ways, is the everyman and why is life is so important for us today. Written in a personal dialogue with God, the saint's "Confessions" is more than an autobiography or a book of theology, it is, in the end, a living prayer. It is one man's compelling witness that is, as Dr. Kreeft will say, astonishingly contemporary. St. Augustine looks at himself so honestly, we can't help but see ourselves in the reflection. "I Burned for Your Peace" is the must have book to accompany you on this spiritual journey, especially if your heart is a restless one. So plan your pilgrimage now! By far, this book is the BEST on the subject of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that I have seen in a very long time. So very practical and deep in its spiritual appreciation of this beautifully essential devotion for our lives, Fr. James Kubicki helps all to rediscover the devotion to the Sacred Heart. He presents the history of this timely devotion, with help of the apostles, Church Fathers, the Saints and contemporary Catholics, in an engaging and easily digestible way. And the prayers...the incredibly deep and radiant prayers...Fr. Kubicki breaks them open a new for us all to appreciate, encouraging us not to "say the prayers", but to "pray the prayers". Wonderful, simply wonderful! I can recommended this work more highly. Pick up more than one copy and become a missionary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by passing copies on to others

It was truly a delight to once again to talk with Sally Read! This time we discuss her beautiful new book “Annunciation: A Call to Faith in a Broken World”.
You can find the book here
From the book description:
Sensing the precarious nature of faith in an overwhelmingly secular world, Read, through meditation and anecdote, began writing down the compelling reasons for holding onto both God and Church. Taking the Annunciation as her template (that most fundamental yes to God), she explores common experiences of the spiritual life: His presence and invitation (And he came to her); the fears we have to let go of (Do not be afraid); the realization of our identity in God (Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord) and what our vocation might be (Let it be to me according to your word); and when God feels very distant from us (And the angel departed from her).
Drawing on Scripture, lives of the saints, and the lives of people she has known personally and professionally as a nurse, Read shows how God is with us always―through suffering, spiritual dryness and depression, as well as in joyful and mystical ways. This book was inspired by a mother’s loving response to a daughter―but what has resulted is something that will speak to any believer engaged in the bliss and bewilderment of a relationship with God.

"Probes: Deep Sea Diving into St. John's Gospel" is a beautiful union of Scripture Study and the prayer experience of Lectio Divina. I've never seen anything quite like it (and I hope I see more). What the reader will find is that diving deeper is actually climbing higher. Under Dr. Kreeft's guidance, we learn to ask penetrating questions of Sacred Scripture, but more importantly, we learn to listen to the Word for the answers. Designed for community study or individual reflection, this is the "John" book I have been waiting for! Thank you once again Dr. Kreeft!

What a delight to talk with Bishop Donald Hying, bishop of the diocese of Madison, WI, about his book Love Never Fails: Living the Catholic Faith in Our Daily Lives! The book is steeped in wisdom from the heart of a contemplative bishop who is very much active in everyday life. He guides us all with his down-to-earth teaching on prayer and helps us to respond to the universal call to holiness. It is said that you can’t give what you don’t have, and it’s truly evident that Bishop Hying has it … a love that never fails. We highly recommended this book and that you connect with Bishop Hying on Facebook to catch his daily video reflections!
You can find the book here
From the book description
The spiritual fruit of much pastoral experience, this book addresses both perennial and current issues facing Catholics in the world today. Ranging from the interior life of prayer and devotion to the practicalities of evangelization and virtue, Bishop Hying offers contemporary and practical insights into the depths of the Catholic faith and how to live it with heroism and humility. He gives a particular focus on the person of Jesus Christ–his identity, mission, and presence in our lives.
As a pastor of souls a good Bishop must apply theology to the lives of the people he serves. These reflections are born from the heart and mind of a pastor who has served in varied contexts of priestly and episcopal ministry, including suburban, inner city, Hispanic, seminary formation, and missionary settings. In the beauty, challenge, grace, and complexity of interacting with a wide variety of people sincerely striving to be holy, Bishop Hying has learned much about the efficacy of God’s purpose and action in human lives and events. This book seeks to feed the Christian soul, mind, and heart.

With Fr. Gary Caster, we discuss “Joseph – The Man Who Raised Jesus”. Thanks to his mother’s encouragement, Fr. Gary received a rich devotion to the “silent” man who witnessed to the faith in an extraordinary way. He shares personal stories, passages from Scripture, and teachings from the Catechism of the Catholic Church to demonstrate what a model of virtue and a protector of the Church and family, St. Joseph is in our lives today. Another wonderful work by Fr. Gary Caster. Good St. Joseph, pray for us!
You can find the book here
From the book description:
Who was St. Joseph? Was he just a passive, incidental figure in the drama of salvation? On the contrary, in every way that Jesus needed a father, St. Joseph was that for him. And how overwhelming it must have been for Joseph to be asked to stand in the Father s place! No man has ever been asked to do so in such an unthinkable way. Every priest, and certainly every man who is a father (biologically or otherwise), should take this to heart.
Caster s book will provide a unique, in-depth presentation of Joseph from the perspective of the evangelical counsels and the theological and cardinal virtues. Each section will begin with an explanation of what each counsel or virtue means and then show how Joseph models it for us.
The descriptions of St. Joseph s life and character found in this book, while rooted in the Scripture passages that mention him, are chiefly inspired by Jesus, who spent the majority of his life at home with Joseph and Mary. For years, the three of them lived, prayed, celebrated, studied, and shared, all the while uniting their lives more intimately with God s own. Those years in Nazareth were a real preparation for the foundation upon which Jesus would build his saving ministry. And as much as Joseph and Mary offered Jesus, he offered them an ever-expanding awareness of the God that had changed both their lives. The reciprocity of love that perfectly defines the home in Nazareth is the very pattern for all family life—and therefore of the Church itself.

Mary Dudro What a delight to discuss Bernadette Chovelon’s Salt and Light: The Spiritual Journey of Élisabeth and Félix Leseur with the translator of the book Mary Dudro. This beautiful love story is filled with fascinating characters, panoramic landscapes, and a sweeping view of a time gone by that is nevertheless very much like our own. The tender relationship between an unbelieving husband and a faithful wife who trusts God completely is a compelling witness to the transformative power of love.
You can find the book here
From the book description:
Élisabeth and Félix Leseur began their life together in France as a carefree young couple with a bright future ahead of them. They were beautifully and compatibly matched, except for one major difference—Élisabeth was a devout Catholic, and Félix was a firmly decided atheist. As they faced the seasons of life together, their relationship was tested, and both were called to deep spiritual transformation.
Out of love for her husband, Élisabeth spent her life offering her many sufferings for the sake of his conversion. After her death, and in response to the profound love he encountered in her writings, Félix converted and offered the rest of his life to God as a Dominican priest.
This biography is a lovely narrative of their marriage and the transformative power of God’s love and grace in their lives. It also presents a charming picture of upper-middle-class French society at the turn of the last century. The cause for the canonization of Élisabeth Leseur has been opened by the Catholic Church.

Once again, we are blessed by a conversation with Dr. Scott Hahn! It is Right and Just: Why the Future of Civilization Depends on True Religion is an important book that provides incredible insight on the importance of true religion in the life of society and culture. He provides the grand vision of salvation history and how religion is what is truly “right,” and why true “justice” is vitally needed in our world today.
You can find the book here
From the book description
Is religion a right given to us by the state? Is it an opium for the masses? Is it private opinion with no role in the public sphere?
In It Is Right and Just, bestselling author Scott Hahn and Brandon McGinley challenge our idea of religion and its role in society. Hahn and McGinley argue that to answer questions over religious liberty, justice, and peace, we must first reject the insidious lie perpetuated by secular-liberal culture: that religion is a private matter.
Contrary to what political commentators and activists say, religion is not only relevant to justice and law, but is necessary for civilization to thrive. Recover the public nature of true religion, It Is Right and Justargues, and watch as a revolution unfolds.

In A Family Guide to Spiritual Warfare, Kathleen Beckman offers you potent advice from her 12 years of active participation on an exorcist’s team. She shows you how to clean up your household by cultivating in your family a civilization of love and how to withstand the spiritual attacks that inevitably come to destroy the harmonious family life you create.
Beckman reveals how you can recognize diabolical disguises in your home and offers proven means of protection found only in the Church’s arsenal of spiritual weapons.
You’ll also learn the devil’s strategies how he does not necessarily seek to possess but simply to seed your family with the venom of hatred, desolation, envy, and vice. This, she explains, is why it s so important for spouses and children to become schooled in the art of spiritual combat. It’s the only way you can destroy the works of the devil and unmask the hidden evil that weaves in and out of your daily family life.
Along with more than two dozen effective prayers for family healing and deliverance, you’ll also learn:
- How to understand the spirits working for and against your family, and what to do in response to them
- What specific actions to take if you believe your family has come under the influence of demonic activity
- How to use your baptismal, spousal, and parental authority in spiritual warfare
- How curses can become effective and what can be done to counteract them
- The difference between diabolical temptation, oppression, obsession, and possession
- The seven ways your family can wear the full armor of God
- The diabolical counterparts to each of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes
- The 13 weapons you can use to defend yourself and your family against evil spirits

From the book description:
Spiritual writer, theologian, and philosopher Jesuit Fr. Robert Spitzer tackles the topic of recognizing and overcoming spiritual evil. His focus is the human heart. His goal: our moral and spiritual transformation, which leads to true peace and genuine happiness.
The book is divided into two main parts: the realities of God’s goodness and of spiritual evil, and recognizing and overcoming diabolical tactics, which range from temptation and deception to the Deadly Sins.
Father Spitzer shows readers how to experience God’s peace even during times of suffering and persecution. He examines the basics of the spiritual life and Christian mysticism, including the contemplative dimension. He explains the purgative, illuminative, and unitive aspects of spirituality, as well as the Lord’s consolation and the passive Dark Night of the Spirit.
Father Spitzer provides the biblical and theological background of Jesus’ victory over Satan. The author also explores the reality of the Devil, including extraordinary manifestations of diabolic activity such as possession. He recalls the true story of the famous possession case on which the novel and film The Exorcist were based.
In the final sections of the book the author explains:
how diabolical spiritual forces operate how temptation works, and what to do to defeat it the”deadly sins” and how to overcome them

It is fantastic and highly recommended to all those who wish to learn not only more about the Blessed Virgin Mary, but how to live a life of true holiness.
You can find the book here

The four levels of happiness and how to acquire them

Seven ways you can cultivate a rich devotion to Our Lady
