Wow, where does the time go?? Hello again everyone, and sorry for being out of touch since our last episode in July before TRT. A lot has happened since then for both of us, and we've missed our trail running community and audience, and we're so glad you're all still here for us.

Jess and I sat down for a catching-up episode to get us back on track, and we're looking forward to more episodes this fall. We covered what we've been doing for the past few months, some of the changes with group runs in the area and some upcoming races to get excited about.

We wrapped up with a giveaway from the Wild Runners Auburn store (big thanks to them!), and congratulations to our winner Bret Lang! Bret is the local brains behind Bret's Big Gamble, a fun random running challenge for the fall, so click the link to read up on it and DM Bret ASAP to register.

Tune in for this episode, and we can't wait to see you all on the trails!

Our favorite guest, Western States race director Craig Thornley, made some time in his extremely busy schedule before the race to join us for some updates and his plans for the rest of the year. Things are slowly getting back to normal after the Mosquito Fire, and the Duncan Canyon and Dusty Corners aid stations can be accessed via Mosquito Ridge Road again - welcome news!

We also talked about other events surrounding the race like the Friends of the Trail awards and the International Runners' Picnic. The pre-race excitement is building!

We wrapped up with hearing about the plan for The Rusty Nails team to head back to Chamonix for the PTL race and all of the training required this time around. We can't wait to follow the team on the live tracker there this fall!

Folsom runner Todd Woodward first discovered road running later in life and then found his true calling of trail and ultrarunning right before the pandemic started in 2020. He has taken an analytical approach to his training, nutrition, strategy and racing and has great advice for others looking to pick up the sport after the age of 40.

He has just finished a sub-14 hour Miwok 100k in absolutely horrible weather conditions and lived to tell! This is just one of the many stories we dig into as we hear about his journey to becoming the runner he is today. Tune in and join us for all of it!

Things got a little busy for the Mile 99 team after the Canyons pre-race briefing and before the start of the race so this is showing up a little late, but we had some time with Abbey, Sean and Chaz after the show. We delved into talking about the various aid stations, their captains and dedicated volunteers and the community that has been built around this iconic race for the past decade.

From Greg's standpoint as a runner this year, the race itself went off without a hitch, the new course was fantastic as a first time experience and even with some phyiscal setbacks, he kept grinding to get a finish in Auburn. Jess and her co-captains and volunteers maintained an intense pace all through the weekend with a critical aid station late in the races for the runners to get themselves fueled and on to the finish line. She knows what it's like for the runners and never fails to get them what they need!

Luckily, the heat did not appear this year like it did in 2023, and now we're all in for some much needed rest and recovery. See you on the trails!

Ethan Veneklasen, co-race director of the Broken Arrow Skyrace sat down with us to do a deep dive in the origins of the race, the formation of the team that brings this unique and iconic event to the Tahoe region and how it has grown over the years.

The Broken Arrow Skyrace is now a nationally and internationally recognized race that has grown hugely popular but still retains its grassroots feel. The race directors are committed to each and every entrant and the community that hosts them. They recently formed an advisory council of a diverse set of athletes to help guide them into the future and inspire and inform other races and sponsors in the sport of trail and ultrarunning.

Join us as we dig into all of it, and head to Palisades Tahoe Jun 21th-23rd, 2024 to race, spectate or volunteer!

The History Expeditions team of Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Elke Reimer, Jennifer Hemmen and Hal Hall sat down with us shortly after completing their epic trek from Placerville, CA to Genoa, NV over the course of 5 days.

The 2024 expedition they chose was a commemoration of the incredible efforts of John "Snowshoe" Thompson, a legendary figure of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California in the mid-1800s. Snowshoe spent 20 years carrying mail and supplies over the mountains under his own power in all conditions, using all of his skills to navigate and travel by foot and 10 foot long, heavy skis. Even after such dedication, he was never paid for his service to the country.

The team researched his story and route meticulously, and only a short time after a historic Tahoe snowfall, they embarked on another meaningful journey that connected them with community members from all walks of life along the way until they reached their ultimate destination across the mountains.

Join us for all of the details and stories of the trip, both the physical and emotional, all of the insights and connections made along the way!

We continued the conversation with Heidi after the main show where she talked to us about a potentially race-ending situation that she had to deal with at the last minute before she even got to the UTMB start line. Luckily, everything worked out in the end, but the way she kept her cool and still achieved goal after a harrowing pre-race experience was truly amazing!

She also talked about the emotional significance of getting to do such a special race, how much it meant to her and what she was feeling just as she started on her long journey. We hope you enjoy this inspiring conversation with Heidi!

For Episode 95 we sat down with our favorite stewards of the Western States Trail Craig Thornley and John Catts. Craig Thornley is the WSER race director and John Catts is the WSER and Tevis Trail Manager. The Mosquito Fire was devastating to many families, our beloved forest, and a good section of the Western States Trail. But with great leadership; strong partnerships with the Tahoe National Forest, Auburn State Recreational Area, and private landowners; generous donations; and most of all an amazing community of volunteers substantial progress has been made. Join us to see how far we have come and how far we need to get before the Big Dance.

Welcome to a new series from The Mile 99 Interview called “Live at the Bar”. At the Bar, you say? Well, not the kind of bar you are thinking but the kind trail runners, hikers, and all the rest of us outdoorsy folks think of. Yes! RIVER GRAVEL BARS!

We plan to explore all the beautiful bends, twists, and turns of the American River and couple that with a trail run and interview. Cool, huh? We are starting out this new series interviewing our very own Greg Larkin. Join us as we run down from the American River Overlook all the way down to Oregon Bar.

A river bar is defined as a ridge-like accumulation of alluvium (such as sand or gravel) in the river channel, along the banks, or at the mouth of a river. The locations of bars are determined by the geometry of the river and the flow through it. During the California Gold Rush, the gravel bars of the American River were extensively mined, stream courses altered, and entire mountain sides washed away. The calm and peaceful places we love today were once loud, busy, and dangerous places full of rough and tough men looking to strike it rich.

Oregon Bar is nestled on the North Fork of the American River, just downstream of the Auburn Dam excavation scars at China Bar near Auburn, California and just over 5 river miles downstream of the confluence of the North and Middle Forks of the American River. Many of us know this wide spot in the river as about where the American River ends and Folsom Lake begins. Pioneer Express Trail heads downstream along the west bank of the river and the loud raging rapids of Oregon Bar quiet down as the water slows. Join us for a run as we go Live at the Bar!!!

We sat down with our dear friend, trail runner, boxer, and long-distance bike rider Taylor Edwards. Hear about his epic 3,400-mile, 31-day bike touring journey from Newcastle, California to Denali National Park, Alaska to honor the passing of his best friend and Father and to spread his ashes in his father’s favorite place. Taylor’s interests in running, backpacking, and cycling especially, were inherited from his father and he always felt the most connected to him when he is out there pushing himself and finding his limits. Seems fitting to tie it all together for their last adventure together.

The Rusty Nails team of Craig Thornley, Joe Steinmetz and Matt Keyes joined us for a live recording at The Auburn Aid Station in Auburn, CA, and we had a great time with them. In addition to learning about their backgrounds, we dove into the team's experience at the UTMB PTL event - a multi-day, 186 mile journey around Mont Blanc with over 80000 ft of climbing.

On top of that, our community really showed up with us to raise money for the Placer County SPCA. The SPCA has had a great need for additional funding to help them manage an influx of displaced animals due to the local Mosquito Fire. The fire has burned over 75000 acres in the Tahoe and Eldorado National Forests. With $250 of matching funds from The Mile 99, our listeners and community members brought the total up to nearly $900! THANK YOU ALL!

Anyone considering a trip over to any race during the UTMB trail running festival in the future, tune in to this episode!

Our community member Katy Gifford is a well-known fixture on the trails and in races all over Northern California. She joined us to talk all about her start in running, first on the road and then to the trails. She has an impressive list of race completions and recently crowned it with a hard fought effort and finish at the Bighorn 100, "a remote rugged test of your endurance"!

It certainly delivered on that promise, and we'll hear all about that, her motivation for finding joy in her running and racing and her hope for more and more inclusivity in the sport of ultrarunning. Join us!

My Cocodona Redemption was an experience in planning, preparation, and prevention. But it was also a net sum energy equation and using the energy in the system as efficiently as possible. That meant eating, drinking, moving, resting, and sleeping on a regular rigid schedule to get the energy in and moving efficiently during the days and nights. One of the quickest ways to loose energy during the day is from solar rays. Many of you asked, why is he wearing a hoodie and what is with the umbrella? Well, it again comes down to energy. When the sun is on your skin or blazing through your non-UPF-protected clothing your body responds to protect itself. To control your body temperature, you sweat. The cooling process requires energy and sweating leads to water and salt loss. So getting overheated and sunburnt leads to all sorts of problems. And with a 5-day race, you cannot afford to lose anything. This gear review focuses on the items I used to preserve my energy.

After his first ever DNF at the inaugural Cocadona 250 in 2021, Mike Turner, co-host of The Mile 99 Interview podcast and "Regular Guy Ultrarunner" stormed back into his training with a burning desire to fix what went wrong. He reinvented his entire plan, hired trainers, researched the "Ultra Lean", spoke to doctors, hit mega vert, cross-trained, dramatically changed his diet and most importantly relentlessly studied how to tackle this new distance.

With trusty Sun-brella in hand, he assembled a support team with his daughter at the helm and friends of new and old to pace him along the way. From the Chaparral, Piñon, Juniper, and Ponderosa forest that surrounds Prescott, Arizona, over the sunburned cow pastures of Fain Ranch, up the rugged Mingus Mountain, through the historic towns of Jerome and Sedona, forging rivers, summiting the infamous Mount Elden, to the finish line in Flagstaff; Mike’s 108-hour journey took meticulously executing everything he had ever learned about ultrarunning.

Tune in to this extra-special episode with our friend and newly-buckled Cocadona 250 finisher to hear the story of his amazing week-long adventure; Cocadona Redemption, a journey of planning, preparation, and prevention.

Erin and Adam sat down with co-hosts Jessica and Greg for a post race interview after Canyons 100k presented by UTMB after we had spoken to them right before the race live at the Auburn Aid Station. First we started with some exciting news about Erin's return to racing (hint: it went great!) as she prepares for an overseas foray to CCC this fall. We can't wait to follow her progress there!

Then we talked to Adam about his course record-setting win at Canyons 100k which earned him both a Golden Ticket and an automatic entry into Western States 2022 as well as an entry into CCC. We got a chance to hear more about his decision process, as Western States would be his first 100 miler following his first 100k race at Canyons.

We're very excited for both of them wish them all the best for the 2022 season!

HOKA generously arranged for two of their sponsored athletes - Erin Clark and Adam Peterman - to have an in-person live podcast recording at the Auburn Aid Station store just two days before the Canyons Endurance Runs by UTMB race that took places on April 23rd, 2022.

We had a fantastic time getting to know Erin and Adam, their early race experiences, their transitions to the trails, and their favorite distances. We also heard about the great trail community they have in Missoula, Montana, off-season training options and their dog Poppy, an accomplished runner as well!

Just two days after this recording, Adam went on to win the Canyons 100k race in course record pace, earning himself a coveted Golden Ticket to the 2022 Western States Endurance Run! We are so excited for him and to see Erin's race at CCC in Chamonix later this year!

Co-host Greg Larkin sat down with ultra-ultrarunner Michael Li and his crew chief Kendall Young just days after Michael's successful completion of a nearly two week effort to make 40 round trips up and down Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, Northern California.

Michael and Kendall recounted all of the stories of preparation, day to day adjustments required throughout the effort, the great support from the ultrarunning community and so much more.

This journey was naturally an incredible physical challenge for Michael and his team, but he relayed so much of the emotional journey and they both shared inspirational observations for anyone to use as they face an obstacle in life, whether it's a sport or anything else.

Folsom runner Jason Davis joined us during a live recording session late in 2021 at The Aid Station in Auburn, CA. He was a pivotal figure in the Western States Endurance Run in 2006 when he took over pacing duties for an up and coming runner from Seattle named Brian Morrison.

Brian was leading the race in the final miles and was paced by none other than Scott Jurek, previous seven-time winner of the race. Scott requested a new pacer for Brian in the final miles, and Jason was tapped for the role. Due to a series of difficulties in the very final mile of the race, Brian was ultimately disqualified after receiving assistance on the Placer High track as he attempted to finish the race.

Jason retold the story of the day and how he recently reconnected to Brian many years after that fateful day. Join us for the full inside retelling of a day of the highest highs and the lowest lows. Ultrarunning never fails to deliver dramatic stories like this, and ultimately, Brian returned to Western States 10 years later in 2016 and received his coveted buckle!

After the seven survivors of the Forlorn Hope Party broke through to Johnson Ranch on January 18th, 1847 after a harrowing 33-day trek where 8 members perished, relief parties were mustered to try and retrieve the remaining survivors of the Donner Party. The first of four relief parties departed Johnson Ranch on February 4th, 1847, with mules and provisions. As the frigid winter and rugged Sierra terrain persisted, their numbers dwindled to seven men who summoned their determination and humanity, eventually reaching the buried cabins on the edge of Donner Lake on February 18th, 1847. Upon arriving they encountered silence and saw nothing but snowdrifts 20 feet deep. A lone dark figure emerged from the snow and in a frail women’s voice said, “Are you men from California or do you come from heaven?” Thus began the rescue of the Donner Party.

The Relief Parties are a lesser-known part of the Donner saga. The grit and selflessness of these men who risked their lives for strangers is a tale of inspiration and intrigue. Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen, and Elke Reimer explored the multi-dimensional persona of each of the relief party members; their history, character, and motivation. With this, they linked together the relief route based on historic records. To honor the true grit and selflessness of the relief parties the Donner Relief Expedition will set off on February 14, 2022, from Johnson Ranch on mules and foot and head east over the Sierra Nevada to the Donner State Park Museum exactly 175 years to the day of the arrival of the 1st Relief Party. Come and take a seat by the campfire and listen to what this crew has planned. AND CATCH WHO WILL BE FILMING!!!

For our 31st episode, we sat down with Bay Area Ultrarunner, Race Director, Running Coach, and now JamOnTam200 FKT holder, Michael Li.

Michael just completed a record-setting 21 ascents up Mt. Tam, covering 200 miles, 57,162 feet of vert in 108 hours, 24 minutes, and 20 seconds.

But Michael has not always been the lean, mean, climbing machine we all know and love. Leading up to 2008 he had built a successful IT consulting and training company, speaking at conferences worldwide. But his busy and stressful lifestyle between airport food and late nights at his desk led him to a weight of 215 lbs. He decided to make a change and get a new lease on his body. Within 6 months he had dropped 60 lbs and started his running journey that took him to the top of Mt Tam.

But his journey has not been easy. Through DNFs, failures, and disappointments, he has learned to thrive and use these as opportunities to grow, train harder, and set bigger goals. Tune into this episode to get all the details on how he pulled this off. Be sure to catch the Rapid-Fire questions at the end for some Michael Li fun facts…YOU WILL BE SHOCKED!!

In this episode, we sit down again with Bruce Nguyen. We spoke to Bruce last November in episode 18 after his amazing Moab 240 finish. We asked him to come back to discuss his gear. Specifically, all the gear it takes to run and crew a successful 200+ mile multiday race.

Bruce just returned from crewing his buddy Michael Li on his amazing JamOnTam200 Fatass, where Michael completed a record 21 repeats with over 56K feet of vert from the historic 1929 Lytton Square Clock in Mill Valley, CA to the top of Mount Tamalpais. This was also a shake-out for the new Ultra Taj Mahal (or UTM for short) which is Bruce’s new off-grid travel trailer that he plans to use as a mobile aid station at both Cocodona 250 and Tahoe 200. The UTM is equipped with a full-sized bed, shower, restroom, salon, and electric stove for some down-home cooking. It’s a major upgrade from sleeping on a cot in his family’s minivan.

But don’t get too comfortable just yet. Mt Tam threw them a curveball of high winds, rain, and hail while summiting the second night. The UTM was only a few miles away and they had chosen to travel light. They had no rain gear and were forced to huddle in the ladies’ restroom at the summit for an hour doing jumping jacks as they waited for the storm to pass. Lesson learned…be prepared for that 2% chance of rain.

Bruce is a busy family man and more of a weekend warrior. Through COVID he has relied on fat races and adventure runs to keep him challenged and trained. But don’t peg him just yet, his race planning is legit. Moab 240 2020 required detailed logistical planning. He spent many hours educating himself on the off-grid lifestyle and what he would need to keep his soda cold and his Elevated Legs Recovery Boots charged.

Prepare for the worst. Mountain races have a good 20 miles between aid stations, and anything can happen. Bruce carries two emergency bivy sacks. You can sleep on them, crawl inside, or wear them as a poncho. Make sure your pacer has their own! Bruce also carries a Garmin InReach and his smartphone equipped with Gaia GPS app to keep him safely on the right trail. He also has been known to use walkie-talkies to give his crew a heads up of his arrival and start chatting about food options.

Don’t forget to pack your drop bags with your DUPLICATE cold and wet weather gear. Yes, You Need DUPLICATES. Walkie-talkie your crew and they can run, grab your drop bag and have it ready at the UTM. Find out if your race moves/bounces drop bags forward. Keep several pairs of dry socks in your pack for river crossings. Oh, there is so much more…

Remember Bruce’s motto: Have a plan but live in the moment and you will find Zen.

On the First 99 Gear Review we usually talk about gear attached to your body; shoes, clothing, watches, stuff like that. But today, we are sitting down with Auburn’s very own Doug White to talk about the gear, time, and volunteers it takes to pull off the successful Dusty Corners Western States Endurance Race Aid Station.

Mile 38 of the WSER is no joke. Dusty Corners is a hot, dry, and dusty place (except for the year of snow and hypothermia). When you finally make it through the high-country snow, Duncan Canyon, and leave Robinson Flat and Miller’s Defeat behind, you will be more than ready for some refreshing watermelon and an ice-cold sponge bath. Doug is the Sheriff of this 1-day tent city and he runs a tight but fun ship. His 25-years of military history of leading a nuclear weapons facility has prepared him well.

Over the decades in between earning his masters degree in pharmaceutical antineoplastic chemistry, leaving the Ph.D program to stand up & serve his country in the U.S. Navy, and rising to VP of R&D in the aerospace/defense industry, Doug is also an accomplished rock climber, mountaineer, and ultramarathon finisher including of course WSER 2001.

Doug was first introduced to the WSER in the mid-90s as his father and famous Tevis Cup step-mother Barbara White were early volunteers of the WSER. He took over AS Captain at Last Chance between 1997 and 2000 for the Steven Creek Striders. His family took over Dusty Corners AS around 2001. Doug took over the reins in 2011 and created the experience we know today.

For most of the year planning is just him, but two weeks prior to the Big Dance the wheels start to churn. All the gear comes out of the Tuff Shed, laid out on his basketball court, sorted, counted, and cleaned. Knives are sharpened, ice is ordered, and logistics are finalized. Dusty Corners is not just an AS, it’s a well-oiled party. On any given year 300 folks and 50 volunteers will pass through this dusty tent city in the mountains.

Thanks to Doug’s leadership and his tireless/loyal crew, your visit to Dusty Corners will be unforgettable. You will be taken back in time to an actual mining town, and come face to face with Sheriff White and his trusty deputies. Tip your hat, take a drink, but get on your way.

Tune in to this episode of the First 99 Gear Review to get all the details on hosting a successful Dusty Corners WSER AS.

Mike kicked off our Mile 99 crew favorite gear review. We peeked into a lesson from Turner’s Theory of Net Energy Balance. It led him to favoring a Gore brand windstopper vest. It has a low back and pockets originally used for cyclists. He mentioned his glasses hook up from Cody Johnson in Salt Lake City who fit prescription lenses in racing glasses. They auto-tint and he wore them for 34 hours at a race. Dakine 8L waistpack is a recent purchase that Mike wants to use for snacks so it is likely to become a favorite quickly.

Jessica really loves the Lululemon Speed Up shorts 2.5 ($59). They are light, lined and durable. She has had the Flipbelt classic($29) for over 5 years. They fit her large phone and have a hook for keys. Jessica was disappointed with the Ultimate Direction Women’s Ultra Vesta 4.0 ($110). The fabric doesn't wash well and is not sturdy. The bladder and soft flask combination is not realistic for a race pack.

Greg is all about getting efficient. He likes his Victory Sport Design Bear III gear bag ($120). He uses it for racing and training. He also favors a big plastic tote that he keeps all his extra gear in. It is always ready to go and it is easy to load up for adventures. His Victory bag also fits into it making this setup so efficient. Greg initially started out liking Injinji toe socks because they helped prevent blisters during long races and training runs. Durability was an issue after a while, and he had to replace them pretty frequently. He now uses the XOSKIN brand toe socks ($24). They’ve been working well and are very durable.

Tune in to hear more about our likes and dislikes!

In this episode, we were joined by Western States Endurance Run race director Craig Thornley, race medical director Dr. Andy Pasternak, president of the board of directors Diana Fitzpatrick, and vice president of the board Tim Twietmeyer.

We were glad to welcome them back after first talking in early December to find out more about plans for the 2021 Western States race. Back in December, there was a great deal of uncertainty that made it difficult to decide how to plan for 2021. In this episode, they all offered helpful insight into the many facets of planning the race and keeping the runners safe.

We touched on all kinds of topics from a latest update on the pandemic and vaccine rollouts, contingency plans for accommodating international runners, qualifying race requirements and much more. We also heard an update on an exciting new race planned for late 2022 by the Western States organization. We'll certainly look forward to hearing more about that again soon!

Tune in to get all of the latest information and updates, and we'll all keep our fingers crossed for a successful race this June!

In this episode of the First 99 Gear Review, I sit down again with our very own Greg Larkin for Part 2 of his Winter Off-Season Cross Training Plan. During Part 1 we dug into Greg’s indoor workouts including rowing on the Concept2 and Zwift virtual bike racing on his smart trainer. In Part 2 we head to the White Wonderland for some full body winter cross training activities.

As mentioned in the last episode Greg was born in Upstate NY and moved to New Hampshire as a kid. Snow sports go back many generations in the Larkin Family tree with both his grandfathers being avid snowshoers with Forlorn Hope style snowshoes.

Greg was always a bike race at heart, but he learned at a young age the value of off-season cross training. It started one Christmas when his parents bought the entire family cross country (XC) snow skis. Greg and his family lived in rural New Hampshire. He and his dad would go out for long XC ski day trips in the nearby town forest. This is when he first learned of the BONK. Cycling is very leg-centric but XC skiing is a full body workout (legs, core, back, and arms).

New Hampshire terrain is much different than here in CA. Up in the White Mountains the peaks are much lower in elevation, 4k to 6k feet with plenty of rolling hills in the 1K to 2K feet elevation range. You do not have to worry about altitude acclimation; it’s the extreme temperatures of 10 degrees below zero that will take you out.

Greg’s early skis were much different than what he rides today. His first set of classical XC skis were 210cm long, waxless, with fish scales, and 3-pin bindings. The fish scales allow you to move the ski forwards but not backwards. Clothing was also challenging as Gore Tex and waterproof outer shells had not been invented yet. People wore lots of wool, Lycra body suits, multiple layers, wind briefs, long-johns, even fleece booties to cover their ski boots. Now we have many more options but layering is still the key.

Tune in the episode to hear all of that and more!

In this episode of the First 99 Gear Review, co-host Mike Turner sits down with our very own Greg Larkin to chat about winter cross training activities. It’s the New Year, and the time to start planning our race and training schedules. But many of us have found over the years it’s essential to take time off and let the body heal. Balancing staying fit, letting the body heal, and staying sane is the key to years of healthy adventures.

In this two-part series we discuss off-season activities and related gear. During part 1 we dig into indoor activities and during part 2 we focus on outdoor winter activities.

Greg’s dad started racing bikes in NH in his 40s and Greg, as a teenager, jumped right in. As a kid he also took up cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. He raced bikes for over 15 years, incorporating skiing in the winter when the roads were too icy to ride.

His dad exposed him to his first indoor bike trainer called “rollers”. These required superb balance as both wheels were moving in sync and there was nothing holding up the bike. In the mid 80s, Greg acquired a RacerMate. This was a major upgrade and attached to the bike and generated resistance from a fan unit that rotated against the rear wheel while riding on a stand.

After college in the late 80s, Greg moved to Boston and met a buddy who rowed crew for Tufts University. The crew team used an ergometer (erg for short) Concept2 rowing machine when not on the water to train.

Typical Greg, it was not long before he signed up for the CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championships held in Boston. He ended up buying a Concept2 Model C that day and still pushes his limits on it. He’s never rowed on water, but the rowing machine provides a solid workout once some basic techniques have been learned.

Then came that fateful summer day when the Dartmouth University Ski Team blew by him on a trail run, charging up some monster peak in the NH White Mountains. He was bit by the trail running bug. Greg moved to Auburn CA in 2014 and fell in love with the Endurance Capital of the World.

Greg is currently cross training with the Concept2 Model C hooked up through the ErgData app on his iPhone and tethered to Strava. For indoor cycling, he is using a Saris M2 smart trainer for virtual group rides via the Zwift app. Greg currently rows and rides 2 to 3 times a week in his “off-season”.

Tune into this episode of the First 99 Gear Review to get all the details on what to get, where to get it, and how little it will actually set you back. Please let us know your indoor setup is like, what is working, and what is not.

In our final episode with Rebecca Sperry, she joined us for a live wrap-up interview as she recently completed her twelve rounds of chemotherapy and is starting a new phase of cancer treatment.

During the interview, we reflected on her journey since we first reached out to her to ask if she would share her story with us. It has been difficult for her and getting harder with each round of chemotherapy, but she has maintained a positive attitude and desire to keep her fitness as much as possible even with reduced blood counts and other side effects from treatment.

Rebecca's mother also joined us to tell us what the experience has been like for her as a caregiver and also the joy she has spending time with her daughter whether it is in support of her day-to-day or during times when they can hike their favorite New Hampshire trails together. Rebecca has currently started a new redlining project and is working on the Southern New Hampshire trail system as she builds back up to tackle Northern New Hampshire.

We are so glad that we met Rebecca, talked with her over the past few months and that she trusted us to help her tell her story. We hope that it has helped over people with cancer diagnoses and the people who love them. We cannot wait to see her progress over the coming months and years!

The modern-day Forlorn Hope Expedition Team sat down with us in this episode to talk about the genesis, planning and execution of their recently-completed journey from Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee, CA to Johnson's Ranch in Wheatland. Their route closely mirrored that of the original Forlorn Hope team that left the stranded Donner Party on December 16th, 1846 in an attempt to find rescue for the starving settlers.

The original Forlorn Hope party faced an arduous trek through the mountains in a year of deep snow and pounding storms with much tragedy and loss of life until a small contingent of seven survivors reached their destination. In this episode, hear the modern team recount the research and planning they had to do to create this project and the tributes that they offered to each of the men, women and children who set out into the unknown 174 years ago.

Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen and Elke Reimer each give their own view of the expedition, the impact it had on them to walk in the footsteps of these early pioneers and the future plans they have now that the physical journey is complete.

Rebecca Sperry, a hiker from New Hampshire joined us for the third of several episodes talking about her redlining goal in the White Mountain National Forest when she was temporarily sidelined by a breast cancer diagnosis in August 2020.

In this episode, Rebecca updated us about her 9th round of chemotherapy and how she has been handling that. We then spent time talking about the people in her life who support her through her cancer diagnosis and treatment - her mother and her husband Jason.

Rebecca interviewed them both for us, and we got some good insights into how they have been doing since they learned of her diagnosis, how they have stepped up for her, and the support systems they have to take care of themselves - an essential facet of providing care to another.

At the end of the episode, Rebecca shares a moving story and tribute to her former student and friend Monique who battled cancer for several years and recently passed away. She was a truly special person whom Rebecca had a deep connection with, and she is now at peace.

Tune in to hear the people who support Rebecca in their own words, and we're sure you'll be moved as well.

Auburn resident Eddie Schmidt sat down with us for a great conversation about his early years as a runner and how much family and the ultrarunning community means to him. Eddie started running seriously later in life after some inspiration early on from his sister and then meeting several people over the years.

He was joined by his daughter Hannah, a new convert to ultrarunning with support from her dad. She was a key part of his 2010 Western States experience where at the age of 15, she paced him to the finish and a 23:55 time that earned him the coveted silver buckle on his first attempt! It was really special to hear that and about the bond that they have as a father and daughter who share such a passion for the sport.

Eddie also spends a lot of time volunteering and working for NorCal Ultras, an organizer who puts on some of the biggest events in the Auburn area. His love for the sport is clear, and we also had some great audience Q&A that focused on advice for families with enthusiastic kids who want to run.

Lots of great feel-good stories here, so tune in to hear them all!

Western States Endurance Run race director Craig Thornley, board member Tim Twietmeyer and medical director Dr. Andy Pasternak joined us for our 21st episode to talk all about the current state of the race as we head into 2021. We found out about how the board reacted to the original onset of the pandemic, handling the cancellation and the plans to hold the race in 2021.

Dr. Pasternak, with his background in epidemiology, also spent time explaining the various vaccine development efforts, how that will affect the general population as well as the ability to restart holding outdoor events like Western States. We also had a guest appearance by new board member Kara Teklinski to talk about her experience with the race organization as she ramps up.

There was great audience Q&A, a leak from Craig about some new plans being worked on by the board and plenty of other good stuff!

We're announcing a new series of podcast episodes that are planned coming up over the next couple of months. The series is called “Rebecca Redlines Cancer”, and we’re posting this trailer episode today to let you know a bit more about it. These episodes will be released along with our continuing format of individual interviews as we’ve been doing since May of 2020.

Rebecca Sperry (see below for links to her website and Instagram) is an avid hiker who lives in New Hampshire. She has been working on a plan since January 1st 2020 to hike all of the trails in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. This totals about 2000 miles when you have to factor in going back and forth on certain sections, and it’s called redlining. With a paper map, the goal is to mark off every mile that you’ve hiked with a pen until every trail mile has been completed. Her goal was to complete all of the trail miles in 2020, and she would have been the first female to accomplish it in that timeframe - a single year New Hampshire redline.

She was working on this project until August of 2020, and then she was unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer. We reached out to her recently and proposed the idea of doing a series of episodes where she could talk about her redlining project, but more importantly, we wanted to speak to her about what her cancer experience has been like, what she has learned, get updates from her as she's going through treatment, and also highlight the fact that she is still pushing herself just as hard as she always was, as often as she can, while she's going through treatment.

Tune in for this new series within the podcast, and we hope you will join us!

On October 30th, 2020 Dan Barger started from the Placer High School track, the legendary finish line of the Western States Endurance Run with his second attempt to complete a full out and back from Auburn to Olympic Valley and back to Auburn. The route would follow the WSER trails for a total distance of 200.4 miles and finishing back on the track.

After a disappointing first attempt in August, Dan went back to finish the job and he did it in style with a blazing time of 2 days, 11 hours and 48 minutes to set a new FKT (fastest known time) record. In fact, because no one has accomplished this record before, he also became the OKT (only known time) holder for the route.

Dan joined us to talk about his long career as an endurance athlete that not only includes ultrarunning but mountain bike racing, triathlon racing, ride and tie and mountaineering. He shared many stories and advice and was also joined by two of his pacers for an inside look at this truly epic journey, a crown jewel of his storied avocation.

CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussion of domestic abuse and suicidal thoughts

Kristina Folcik is a trail runner, race director, coach, multiple FKT (fastest known time) record holder and domestic abuse survivor. She joined us from New Hampshire to talk about the various forms of abuse she suffered for years, what it took to finally exit her marriage, and the people and resources that helped her do so.

Part of her healing process in life is going into the mountains, and she settled on a daunting task to help herself through the most difficult period of her life - to set a fastest known time (FKT) record on the White Mountains 100 segment of the Appalachian Trail. In fact, she became become the first person to run this section of the AT continuously and therefore set the benchmark for future attempts. During her effort, she faced several multi-peak traverses, covering 104 miles and 34,000 feet of climbing.

Surrounded by her dedicated support crew and pacers, she accomplished this incredible feat and also raised over $1000 for Starting Point NH, the organization that worked with her for years until she found the strength to leave her hurtful past behind and become the authentic person that she was meant to be.

Please tune in for this moving episode, and we want to thank Kristina for joining us and talking about this very important topic.

In this episode, we chatted with Bob Shebest, a pro ultrarunner (sponsored by Salomon, Buff, GU and Squirrel's Nut Butter), coach and middle-school educator. Bob recently relocated to the foothills from Sonoma County and is back on the roads around the area on his bike and seeking adventure on the trails here and in the mountains of the Tahoe region. He recently paced Adam Kimble, a Tahoe area runner, on his successful quest to break the Tahoe Rim Trail FKT record!

We had entertaining discussions about his long athletic career spanning cycling, triathlon, road running and all of the ultra trail running exploits since he fully committed to the sport in 2013. From time to time, we'd like to bring you additional special episodes like this one! Mike Turner and I have been doing a lot more exploring around the area since the racing season has been effectively cancelled.

We've gone on several trips out to the North Fork of the American River canyon. Many of the trails are lightly-used, fairly remote and sometimes obscure. It makes for a good time out there discovering new places, coming across old mining history and artifacts and putting in some serious descents and climbs. You always need to save something for the end when you start on the canyon rim!

In this episode, we started on the Big Granite Trail on the I-80 (north) side of the canyon, made our way down to the river and viewed some waterfalls, crossed the river and headed upstream in search of Walker Mine. Mike had been there many years ago but came down from the top of the canyon on the south side. So we had to find the trail along the river after Sailor Flat and look for the ascending trail to reach the mine. Have a listen and hear what happened along the way!

We hope you enjoy these occasional special episodes and let us know what you think. You can also check out the full video of the adventure and the incredible scenery here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kapDCC71xC0

In this special episode, we have collaborated with the Donner Party Mountain Runners to bring you a podcast recorded from their live interview with Helen Pelster and Adam Kimble, two incredible ultrarunners who both set fastest known time (FKT) records on the Tahoe Rim Trail, a 171 mile loop around Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada. Thanks very much to DPMR board member Jack Macy for allowing us to rebroadcast this special interview and to founding member Chris Cloyd for moderating the interview.

Helen's run was in the unsupported style where she carried all of her gear and filtered water as needed along the way, and Adam ran fully supported with pacers and a crew. Find out more about how each of them planned and executed such different approaches to the FKT and their eventual record-breaking runs!

Helen Pelster is an accomplished ultrarunner based in Truckee, CA, and in this episode we spoke with her about her initial discovery as running as a way to get in shape but then things really took off from there, culminating in successful completions of fastest known times (FKTs) on the Tahoe Rim Trail in 2019 and 2020.

We hear all about those huge achievements and how she approaches running and techniques she uses to stay centered while doing something that could be outside of your comfort zone. As usual, we had some interesting questions from the audience and a guest spot from Helen's daughter Clara talking about the web site she has built to challenge people to climb 20 different mountain peaks in the Lake Tahoe area. Check it out!

We had an excellent conversation with Chris Thomas about his entry into running in 2015 when he decided to transform his life. Learn about how he made the shift and got on the path to the hardened ultrarunner that he is today.

Since then, Chris has progressed quickly into taking on some of the most challenging races in the world including a sub-40 hour finish at UTMB and recent completion of the Hammond Challenge where you run the number of miles equivalent to the day of the month for a complete month! Total miles: 496, but Chris decided to take it up many, many notches as you will learn!
