Ep 99: Sugar Addiction and Junk Food Cravings: Strategy to Breaking Through
Ellie is a certified Health and Emotional Eating Coach and an expert in sugar addiction. Ellie was a former Chemical Engineer with a history of sugar addiction, binge eating and chronic health issues. After she recovered her health and broke through sugar addiction, she has since coached hundreds of people to do the same.
In this episode, Ellie shares an initial strategy to break free from sugar and processed junk foods.
Main Takeaways:
All Calories are not equal, the quality of your food matters.
In the beginning, first focus on WHAT you are eating versus the how much at this time. Focus on eating REAL WHOLE FOODS. IF you are trying to also battle hunger by trying to also cut calories, it usually ends up in a binge and then feelings of failure. Let yourself eat as much of you want of the right foods first. Then once you get that down and get your satiation signals working, it will be so much easier to regulate your appetite.
Helpful Rules of Thumb:
Control Your Carbs- EAT REAL FOOD CARBS like veggies, sweet potatoes, whole fruit. Avoid: processed or refined carbs like bread, cereal, chips etc.
Prioritize Protein - Add in ideally animal based protein sources at each meal. Other protein sources like eggs, nuts, seeds. Animal based protein is very bioavailable and nutrient dense especially grass-fed beef and ruminant animals and organ meats.
Don't Fear Fat- Focus on healthy fats- grass-fed animal meats, wild caught fatty fish, avocado, olives, coconut

Episode 97: Take Imperfect Action ... Mindset for Sugar addiction, Binge Eating, and Weight loss
Release perfection, focus on upleveling.
See your choices on a scale versus black or white, good or bad.
In this episode Ellie also discuss one underlying reason for sugar addiction and binge eating which is unexpressed creativity, lack of fulfillment in life, and feeling trapped by our lives.
Food is a great way to numb or to receive a fleeting hit of fulfillment trying to fill a void. Our cravings are for connection to our higher self and our inspirations.

Perfectionism and Impostor Syndrome keeps many of us from going after our dreams or expressing ourselves creatively. Unfulfilled desired and unexpressed creativity turns leads to addictions and reaching for food to numb or to get a temporary feeling of fulfillment and connection.
What is your soul craving?
"When cravings don't come from true hunger, food will never satisfy them"
In this episode, Ellie shares the connection between lack of creative and emotional expression with cravings, addiction, and binge eating.
How to move through fear of perfection and impostor syndrome
Poem Mentioned:
The Buried Life by Matthew Arnold
But often, in the world’s most crowded streets,
But often, in the din of strife,
There rises an unspeakable desire
After the knowledge of our buried life;
A thirst to spend our fire and restless force
In tracking out our true, original course;
A longing to inquire
Into the mystery of this heart which beats
So wild, so deep in us—to know
Whence our lives come and where they go.

Episode Notes:
Gluten is one of the biggest drivers of fatigue, brain fog, bloating, inflammation, weight gain, feeling puffy, gastrointestinal issues, autoimmunity, anxiety, depression.... the list goes on.
So many people think they are eating "gluten-free", but gluten sneaks in so many foods. Gluten isn't just in bread.
Even 1/8th of a fingernail amount of gluten can cause an immune response that lasts for weeks.
Here are some sneaky gluten sources to be aware of:
Common “Hidden” Gluten List:
Swap for Coconut aminos.
Swap to a grainless granola or grainless cereal like Seven Sunday, NuCo Coconut Flakes, or Autumn's Gold Grainless granola
Soups are often thickened with “roux” – Roux is a mixture of fat, usually butter, and flour.
Salad dressings – May contain malt vinegar, soy sauce, or flour. Could also contain modified food starch that’s used to emulsify, thicken, or as an anti-caking agent. In the U.S., modified food starch is usually made from corn; if made from wheat, this must be specified on the label as “modified wheat starch” or “modified food starch (wheat.)”
Marinades and barbecue sauces – May contain malt vinegar, soy sauce, or flour.
Taco seasonings – Certain brands contain wheat.
Some Vinegars – Fermented vinegars made from gluten-containing grains need to be avoided. Malt vinegar is fermented and made from barley. Chinese black vinegar could be made using wheat in addition to rice.
Sausage – Could contain rusk, a twice-baked, gluten-containing bread that is used as a cereal filler in some types of sausage like British “banger” sausages. Some specialty or plant-based (meat-free) sausages could contain wheat gluten.
Some Beef jerky – Certain flavors of beef jerky – such as teriyaki – contain soy sauce. I love epic bars, Chomps Sticks, Nose To Tail Brands!
Vegan Meat substitutes often use wheat gluten. EAT REAL MEAT
Restaurant Eggs/Omelets- Make sure to ask- sometimes they put pancake batter in the eggs.

Recovering from sugar addiction and binge eating: seeing slips and relapses as part of the process
Ellie is an former chemical engineer now emotional eating coach and expert in sugar addiction after breaking through her own sugar addiction and binge eating disorder and reclaiming her health. She's coached hundreds of people to recover from sugar addiction, binge eating, and reclaim their health. Ellie is also a breathwork facilitator, yoga teacher, and the founder of Comfort Zone Retreats.
In this episode Ellie shares a poem by Portia Nelson (Poem Below) that depicts how we change habits and the process of becoming aware and taking ownership of destructive patterns. Bringing the unconscious patterns and cycles to consciousness. Ellie shares her insights looking through the lens of binge eating and common restrictive, guilt, and shame cycles of addiction.
When we can accept that slips are part of the process, find compassion for ourselves, and own our patterns, the quicker we can learn and grow, get out of the "holes" faster, and eventually take a new path.

***The Internal Family Systems Model Outline
from Internal Family Systems Website: https://ifs-institute.com/resources/articles/internal-family-systems-model-outline
I. BASIC ASSUMPTIONS OF THE IFS MODELIt is the nature of the mind to be subdivided into an indeterminate number of subpersonalities or parts.
Everyone has a Self, and the Self can and should lead the individual's internal system.
The non-extreme intention of each part is something positive for the individual. There are no "bad" parts, and the goal of therapy is not to eliminate parts but instead to help them find their non-extreme roles.
As we develop, our parts develop and form a complex system of interactions among themselves; therefore, systems theory can be applied to the internal system. When the system is reorganized, parts can change rapidly.
Changes in the internal system will affect changes in the external system and vice versa. The implication of this assumption is that both the internal and external levels of system should be assessed.
THE SELF: Curious, compassionate, calm part of you that is always there.
GENERAL GROUPS OF PARTS
If exiled, can become increasingly extreme and desperate in an effort to be cared for and tell their story
Can leave the individual feeling fragile and vulnerable * MANAGERS * Parts that run the day-to-day life of the individual
Attempt to keep the individual in control of every situation and relationship in an effort to protect parts from feeling any hurt or rejection
Can do this in any number of ways or through a combination of parts -- striving, controlling, evaluating, caretaking, terrorizing, and so on. * FIREFIGHTERS * Group of parts that react when exiles are activated in an effort to control and extinguish their feelings
Can do this in any number of ways, including drug or alcohol use, self-mutilation (cutting), binge-eating, sex binges
Have the same goals as managers (to keep exiles away) but different strategies

Show Notes:
One of the biggest reasons the current diet culture doesn't work longterm is that fad diets don't address your ability to manage emotions.
Your ability to sit in discomfort or uncomfortable emotions is a SUPERPOWER.
Learn to ride the waves of discomfort versus escaping with sugar, food, or other numbing agent.
Learn to befriend your inner critic(s) and nurture your inner child(ren)

Ep 75: Navigating a Binge - Tools for Sugar Addiction & Emotional Eating
If you have a binge, release judgment and step into genuine curiosity. Connect to your higher self and build your compassion muscle. Relapsing is part of the process. Anytime you find yourself unconsciously eating or eating to numb, it's an opportunity to tune in. Binge episodes are DATA. Learn about yourself and your behaviors. You'll be able to pull yourself out faster and binge episodes will become less frequent and less intense.
Trade self-loathing and guilt for compassion and gentleness. You are learning.

Episode 52: 4 Quick Healthy Holiday Tips
Holiday Season is Here!
That does not have to mean gaining 15 lbs and feeling bloated, tired, or exhausted.
In this episode Ellie shares 4 quick tips to set you up for healthy success this year.
TIP #1 Set intentions
TIP #2 Up-level Ingredients
Staying healthy during the holidays does NOT have to mean deprivation. There are SO many swap recipes and ingredient swaps you can make to up-level your favorite holiday recipes.
The main way to staying energized and not gain weight over the holidays is to balance your blood sugar avoid vegetable/seed oils, and major inflammation triggers like gluten.
TIP #3 Worth It Foods
When it comes to the Holidays, the all or none mindset can start to set in.
"Well I ate that piece of pie, so I might as well gorge on everything and start over Monday."
Trade the "Cheat Day" / "All or nothing" mindset for mindful indulgences.
Tip #4 Plan the Day After!
The reason most people gain weight or feel low energy for the holidays is not because of 1 holiday meal. It's the slippery slope after that meal that leads to weeks off the wagon of our goals. Set yourself up to come back to your higher self and feel good ASAP

Danielle Gronich, known as the country's "Acne Guru", owner of the renowned San Diego Acne Clinic, and pioneer of the successful treatment of acne. Her clinic, San Diego Acne Clinic takes a holistic approach with a 98% success rate for getting people clear and keeping them clear. Together with Kayleigh Clark, she is the co-founder of CLEARstem Skincare, a groundbreaking anti-aging, hormone balancing, scar revising and anti-acne skincare line. Danielle established the San Diego Acne Clinic after battling her own cystic acne for over 10 years. None of the typical methods – antibiotics, lasers, hormonal modifiers, prescription creams, peels and even three rounds of Accutane – worked for her, and the many physicians and dermatologists she consulted could not seem to crack the code.
She left the corporate world, dove into clinical research, and went back to school to find the answers for herself, earning her license as a clinical esthetician and acne specialist. She learned that acne has multiple triggers that operate in tandem and that thoroughly evaluating each case in a holistic way – both internal and external – is the only way to help truly manage skin. Today, her clinic has thousands of success stories to tell including celebrity clients.
Kayleigh Clark is the co-founder of CLEARstem Skincare, a Holistic Nutritionist, published author, and wellness expert with a keen understanding of the ingredients we put in our bodies for better or worse. Are you struggling with digestive issues, autoimmunity, anxiety, depression, eczema, psoriasis or any chronic health issues?
The carnivore diet has been a savior for so many people. Not only because of it's low carb, real food nature, but because of the high bioavailability of nutrients in animal meat and organs + ridding of the commonly problematic defense mechanisms in plant foods (i.e. lectins, oxalates, etc.)
In this episode Ellie interviews Scott Myslinski, the host of the Carnivore Cast, a podcast focused on the carnivore diet where he interviews expert researchers, doctors, and regular n=1 people who have relieved a variety of conditions with a carnivore or keto diet. Scott has been a carnivore himself for almost 3 years and uses the diet to improve his health and well-being.

This episode inspired by one of my 1:1 clients who had lost 22 lbs, but was feeling stuck in a plateau for about 2-3 weeks.
With just shifting her mindset and her beliefs about losing weight, she dropped 4.5 lbs in less than 1 week.
You literally create your own reality. You have to believe what you want is possible and is available to you now. Be the version of you that you want to be... TODAY. Your sub-concious behaviors are going to promote that outcome.
Coming from a place of lack and stuckness, is demotivating. It is low energy and promotes low energy behaviors thus fulfilling that belief of being stuck which then perpetuates demotivation and the cycle continues.
Coming from a place of excitement because you trust this is your reality, motivates you to keep showing up for yourself, believing that it is possible promotes high energy behaviors to bring about your desired outcome and attract things ini your life in that higher energy state. Expect that what you want is own its way and find gratitude for the not yet seen, because it is coming.
Affirmations:
I lose weight easily.
My body is coming back into balance.
I am so excited to be fit and healthy.
Weight loss is easy.
I release this excess weight.
I am fit and strong
I love my body and so grateful for my journey to my healthiest self.

In this Episode: I give you practical strategies to actually drink enough water in your day, so you can feel energized, clear minded, and not craving food all day long.
The importance of hydration is so often overlooked. We seek out supplements, blood work, or other expensive healing modalities, when first we need to start with the basics. Are you hydrated?
Even just being a little dehydrated can lead to:
False hunger signals, brain fog, fatigue, head ache, low mood, aging skin etc.
So often when we think we're hungry, we are actually just thirsty.
Aim to get minimum half of your body weight in ounces per day, so if you are 130 lbs- shoot for 65 ounces minimum.
Sometimes this is easier said than done, so in this episode I give you some practical strategies to make it easier

Episode 15: How Marie-Kondoing Principles Can Transform Your Relationship With food
What in your life no longer sparks joy? What in your schedule drains you? What relationships are no longer serving you? What past Identities and labels would you like to let go of? What behaviors drain you? What things are you doing that make you feel bad that you would like to shift? When you think about letting things go that are no longer serving you, Notice if critter brain (ego) thoughts come up. Recognize this is the part of the brain that wants to keep you safe. Thank the ego for trying to protect you, and step into your higher self. You are worth it. Change can be scary and that is ok. Embrace the discomfort of the unknown. Create space so the joy can come in. If you need support or accountability to start changing your life, find more joy, and heal your relationship with food, let's chat. How many times have you left a restaurant and wished you hadn't eaten so much or beat yourself up for eating all of the french fries?
Dining out was one of my main triggers and a major trigger for most of my coaching clients to gorge on lower energy foods, overeat, and beat themselves up afterwards.
It can be intimidating to eat out when you are trying to stay in alignment with your health goals.
But you don't have to give up your social life and your favorite restaurants to be "healthy".
In this episode, I give you strategies that you can start implementing NOW to show up with confidence when you dine out.
No more feeling like you need to be rolled out of the restaurant ;)
We explore strategies pre-meal, during, and post-meal to set you up for optimal success.
Play with these strategies and figure out which ones work best for you.
There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.
Every time you dine out is an opportunity to up-level and learn about your own tendencies.

Kick the Sugar Habit- Part 1
As a former severe sugar addict, I know how gripping sugar addiction can be.
I couldn’t fathom the concept of not craving sugar. Once I got to the other side though, I knew it was my mission to help other people do the same.
I am a wellness speaker and one of my favorite talks to give is: Kick The Sugar Habit
In this episode, I share with you part one of my talk.
I dive into how sugar affects our body, why it makes us gain weight, causes Type 2 Diabetes, fuels chronic disease, sucks our energy, and why calorie counting does not work long term.
______________
Obesity is not a lack of will power. It is hormonal disfunction.
Type 2 Diabetes is not a life sentence. In most cases, it is preventable and reversible.

Mindfulbellie Don't Eat Your Feelings Podcast Episode 3: Honoring Your Hunger and Fullness
When it comes to mindful eating, learning how to honor your hunger and fullness is essential.
As a former binge eater and working with many clients with compulsive eating behaviors, tuning into your internal hunger and fullness scales is how we can really start to shift habits.
I have a free hunger and fullness guide. Just DM me on instagram @mindfulbellie or send me an email at mindfulbellie@gmail.com and I'll send it over!
Hunger scale: 0-10
0 not hungry at all
10 being so starving you are going to eat your arm.
Try not to let yourself get past a 5 or you may be setting yourself up for a poor food decision or a binge. It's so much harder to make mindful choices when we are ravenous and ready to eat anything in sight. Always have emergency back up food. (stock your car, work drawers, purse etc.)
Fullness Scale: 0-10 The more trickier one I find with myself and clients
0-Stomach Empty
10- Need to unbutton pants to breathe
We are shooting for a 7 on the fullness scale, satiated not stuffed. Energized and light, not heavy and sleepy.
Avoiding overeating can be tough, especially if we're stressed out or in a hurry.
Use the Speed Bump I talk about (especially when dining out)
Post Meal Ritual to give you something to do when you are done eating that your brain can look forward to.
Anytime you do overeat, release judgment and let it be an opportunity to get curious. What was in place that led to the overeating? maybe you were starving because didn't have anything to eat for lunch, maybe you were dining out and served a massive portion and just kept picking at it because other people were eating., etc. Observe the behavior and consciously play out what you would like to do for yourself next time.
Do you need help to overcome compulsive eating or overeating habits? Or Would you like guidance, support, and accountability, to finally change your habits to feel confident in your body and have more energy?
Set up a free strategy session with me. We'll get clear on your goals and see if we'd be a good fit to work together.

Do you ever reach for food when you aren't actually hungry?
Rather than depriving yourself, which typically leads to rebellion and a binge, learn how to trade white-knuckling will power, for mindfulness.
The first step in conquering my compulsive eating and binge eating disorder was all about shifting out of autopilot, numbing out mode, into curious awareness of my habits.
In this episode, I talk about how to start tuning into your own triggers for eating and how to cultivate mindful eating habits.
I mention one of my favorite Mindful Eating guru's Michelle May, MD in this episode and a really helpful "Identifying your Triggers" Handout.
If you'd like the free guide, just shoot me an email at mindfulbellie@gmail.com
This guide is extremely helpful in starting to realize all of the things that may prompt your brain to eat or crave something that you may have never realized. So many of my clients come to realize all sorts of things they had never linked to their eating habits.
Awareness is the first step to lasting habit change. Release Judgement and just get curious!
Use non-edible forms of nourishment to create new neural pathways in the brain when you experience your trigger. Try Club soda, Tea, water, go for a walk, listen to music, etc. Repeat the behavior each time you are compelled to reach for food to give your brain a new default behavior.
For Emotional Eating, when hit with an emotional trigger, fill out this sentence: I feel _____, because ______, I want ____
Ex: I feel overwhelmed because I have so much to do, I want peace.
Identify what you are looking for, that you maybe using food to achieve. Explore, how else can you experience the desired feeling. (a walk, meditation, breathing, self-care, call a friend, etc.)
If you are looking for guidance, support, and accountability on your mindful eating/health journey I am here for you. DM me on instagram @mindfulbellie or email me at mindfulbellie@gmail.com and we can set up a free strategy session to see if we'd be a good fit to work together.

However, I believe our mess is our message. Through a journey of overcoming sugar addiction, learning how to fuel my unique body, mindful eating strategies, and stress management, I was able to transform my toxic relationship with food and it is now my mission to help you do the same.
