It's been four years since this episode came out and I wanted to share it again. As a young officer I remember when this shooting happened and was always amazed at how well Jennifer handled herself and won a gunfight with multiple suspects. Lots of great lessons learned for officers and well as anyone who carry a gun for self defense.
Jennifer Fulford was a deputy sheriff back in 2004 when she went to a suspicious incident call. A child on the phone was stating strange men were in the house and on arrival she met up with the female homeowner who was acting strange. It turned out three men were inside committing an armed home invasion.
Jennifer got into a gunfight with two of the men and despite being shot multiple times, she was able to take out both suspects. The third suspect gave up.
Jennifer went on to have a career in law enforcement and now talks to other officers on how to survive critical events.

This episode is dealing with police impersonators. Yes, they are out there. How do you deal with getting pulled over by one:
Recognizing the Situation
Police impersonators can be a real danger, and knowing how to react is key. If you’re pulled over by someone you suspect is not a legitimate police officer, the first step is to stay calm and assess the situation. Remember, you have the right to ensure your safety.
Pull Over Safely
If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of the vehicle attempting to pull you over, don’t stop immediately. Instead, put on your hazard lights, slow down, and signal your intent to pull over. Choose a well-lit, populated area to stop, like a gas station or a busy parking lot.
Observe the Vehicle
A real police vehicle will be clearly marked, often with the department’s logo, proper lighting, and an array of emergency lights. Impersonators may use unmarked vehicles or vehicles with insufficient lighting. Take note of these details.
Contact Police Dispatch
When in doubt, call 911 or your local police dispatch to verify the situation. Explain your concerns and ask if there is a legitimate officer in your vicinity conducting a traffic stop. Dispatchers will guide you on what to do next.
Your safety should always be your top priority. If the person claiming to be an officer doesn’t display proper identification or behaves inappropriately, trust your instincts. You can request a marked patrol car and uniformed officer to arrive at the scene before proceeding.

Jack DiCristofalo is a 30-year veteran of a major metropolitan police department. During those years, Jack served on patrol, and tactical units as well as becoming a homicide investigator. Jack also served on the department’s SWAT team as a sniper/instructor. As Jack sees the light at the end of the tunnel, he transferred all his skills to be a firearms instructor. At last year’s Bill Drill Challenge at Nationals, he did the 6 shots in 1.23 seconds. This weekend he goes back to Carry Optics Nationals and will face the winner of this year’s challenge. Isaac thinks he can do it.

The training can take place in various settings, including indoor facilities, outdoor environments, or purpose-built training grounds.
Force-on-force training offers several benefits, including:
- Realistic decision-making: Participants have to make split-second decisions under pressure, simulating the cognitive demands of actual operational situations.
- Stress inoculation: By exposing participants to simulated high-stress situations, force-on-force training helps them develop the ability to perform effectively and make sound decisions under duress.

Adam Haidary is a former police training sergeant and spent seven years in law enforcement. One of the things he realized, was that police officers often had a hard time dealing with combative subjects and weren’t really trained on how to do it. Old-style control techniques that were not pressure tested, would fail and the situation could easily escalate to deadly force. Adam created Effective Fitness Training and Effective Fitness Combatives to solve these issues. The programs utilize Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the use of a firearm as well as various fitness challenges to keep officers in shape. His company works with police departments around the nation and he has a solid cadre of instructors.

Bruce Gray is a well-known gunsmith and competitive shooter who has been involved in the firearms industry for over 40 years. He is known for his expertise in building high-performance custom firearms and has worked with many law enforcement and military agencies to develop custom firearms for their needs.
Gray’s interest in firearms began in his early teens when he started shooting with his father. He later went on to serve in the United States Army and worked as a police officer in California. BJ Norris started shooting and competing with he was only 11 years old. He was a very competitive junior shooter and took many National titles. BJ went on to earn a gold medal with the US National team in 2008 and has won the World Speed Shooting Championship many times. In fact, I’m releasing this replay episode since the 2023 World Speed Shooting Championship is taking place at the end of April and I thought people would get the benefit of BJ’s knowledge before the match.
On April 11, 1986, there was a massive shootout between agents of the FBI and two dedicated, murderous, armed suspects. The end result was two agents dead and several wounded. This shootout changed the caliber choice for the FBI and numerous police agencies for many years and brought forward the classic topic of round “stopping power.” Mike Wood, the resident Firearms Nation historian, goes in depth to how the shootout went down and as a bonus, we discuss his previous book on the California Highway Patrol Newhall CA shootout. Mike writes for his own blog on both tactical history and revolvers. In fact, he is known as the “Revolver Guy”.

Shannon Smith, if you don’t know him, is a multi-division Grandmaster shooter in USPSA. Shannon has won the national championship in the Limited Division as well as multiple Florida State championships. Shannon also was talented enough to make TEAM USA for three World Shoots. Les Kismartoni is a phenomenal competitive shooter. Just don’t give him a hot dog with ketchup on it! He is from Chicago where good hotdogs have other accessories like pickles, mustard, and relish. That being said, Les is a Distinguished Master in IDPA and a Grandmaster in USPSA, which means the boy can shoot. Dave Benton also known as “Boon” was one of the Global Response Staff of the CIA working in Benghazi during the terrorist attack on September 11, 2012. During that attack, Dave and his partners attempted to rescue the US Ambassador and defend the CIA Annex while completely outnumbered. This account was told in the book “13 Hours” as well as the great movie of the same name. Sarah Adams also worked for the CIA as a Targeter and was in Benghazi leading up to that fateful day.
Many years after that attack, Dave and Sarah decided to write a book not only explaining what led up to the attack but also started a cold-case investigation into all the terrorists who perpetrated the attack and provide a detailed dossier on each of them.

I had a great talk with Derrick about “Tactical Blindness” and when I heard that John teaches a technique called “Flash Recognition,” I wanted to bring him on. Chris Kuras is a full-time police officer assigned to the Training Unit of his agency. Happy 4th of July! This is a replay from the vault of a 2018 interview I did with Lanny Bassham. Here is a little about Lanny:
95% of all winning comes from the same 5% of the competitors. What makes them different than the rest of us? Their mental game is better than the others. Anyone can practice a sport or hobby and develop skill at that sport, but the ones with a better mental system will always win in the end. How does a person get a better mental game? My guest today started out as the guy least likely to get to the Olympics as a small kid in 6th grade. Fast forward to the 1976 Olympics where my guest, Lanny Bassham took the gold medal in small bore rifle shooting. But it wasn’t an easy road. Lanny had previously gone to the ’72 Olympics and choked in the gold medal match where he walked away confused and with a silver medal. In the next four years he would develop his trademarked mental management system that in the past 40 years has lead many students to world championships and other victories.
How do we learn about this system? Lanny goes over the highlights from the system and his book he wrote, “With Winning in Mind” today with me. “With Winning in Mind” is mentioned several times in previous podcasts as one of the tools that took good shooters to make them great. This system also has been taught to special operations and Secret Service. You’ll learn today why you should value the process and not the outcome, highlight solutions and not problems and finally how to coach your kids to be winners.

This episode is a replay of Firearms Nation Podcast #69 where I interviewed John Caprarelli who wrote the book "Uniform Decisions". The book talked about what it was like responding to the North Hollywood Shootout between two bank robbers and the LAPD. John responded back on February 28th, 1997 which is now having its 25th year anniversary. I wanted to share the show again because that event had such a tremendous impact on law enforcement and it's a part of history that we should learn from.
If you haven't heard the show before, I hope you enjoy it and take away the lessons. If you have heard it, it's worth listening to again. I hope John is doing well and he and the other members of the LAPD who responded that day have my best wishes.
John Kelly had a career as a police officer that lasted over 30 years. During that time he had a variety of positions as well as becoming a sergeant. One thing that he learned along the way was how to survive the constant life stress that this type of work puts on people.
This year, over 118 police officers have killed themselves. That’s more than double the amount of police that have been killed by gunfire. One of the aspects to John’s new work is to connect with departments and individuals to create an avenue where officers can get help and work out their problems. Talking to a counselor is good but talking to someone who’s been there with you, sharing the same experiences is better.
As John says, “Sometimes heroes need help…”
This is an important podcast to listen to even if you are not in law enforcement or the military. During the holiday season, people can easily magnify their problems. Listen and share it. Stay safe.

The most amazing thing about world champion JJ Racaza is not just his shooting ability, but his humility. He works hard to make sure his students understand his concepts, and he always takes the time to reveal the nuggets of instruction. Those nuggets are gold.
I’ve trained three times with JJ and spoke to him on this podcast before. I feel like I grew as a shooter each time, however, this past class I had some amazing revelations about my shooting. Now I have to continue with the training.
JJ started shooting as a teen and has won numerous championships in practical pistol and steel challenge. He also found time to serve in law enforcement as well as becoming a highly sought-after trainer.

Yousef Badou served in the Marine Corps with an interesting twist. Yousef was born in Kuwait and is half Arabic. That benefited him when he was deployed to Iraq and helped his command as a tactical interpreter. Yousef went on to assist in forming the Combat Hunter program and teaching it to Marines. Combat Hunter taught them how to better their situational awareness and develop behavior analysis. Once he left the Marines, he wanted to continue teaching this program and formed his own company called Emergence. Now in addition to teaching law enforcement and military, Yousef is helping religious institutions and everyday folks.

Andrew Branca is the man behind the Law of Self-Defense. It’s not only a great book to read and have in your range bag, but it’s also a website with tons of information that will keep you up to date on case law and opinions related to people like you who carry a gun.
There have been several recent cases that I wanted to discuss with Andrew: The first was an LAPD cop who was involved in a shooting where the suspect ended up dying. The attorney for the plaintiff suggested the officer was liable since she was a “competitive shooter” and gunslinger. Second, the case of Ahmed Arbury in GA who was killed after being stopped by two citizens who now are facing murder charges. Finally, we talk about the McCloskey’s in St. Louis where the husband and wife defended their home outside with firearms while a mob walked by and threatened them.

Mike Foley is President of the USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association). USPSA is one of the largest organizations in action pistol. Recently, all of the matches had to stop because of COVID19 and now we are able to get out there again and compete.
I caught up with Mike as two National Championships were taking off. We talk about how USPSA has grown, the increase in the weight of guns, and where the organization goes next.

I have to say, 2020 has been the opposite in terms of being a great start to the decade. We are halfway through the year and it seems that life as we know it is changing. I thought COVID was horrible until I started seeing riots in the street and attacks on cops. Of course, this reminded me of a podcast episode I did with Mike Wood talking about the lessons we can learn from the 60s and 70s law enforcement officers. So I brought Mike back on the show to help explain what we are dealing with and how to respond.
Mike Wood is the son of a 30 year veteran of California Highway Patrol and Mike wrote the book “Newhall Shooting-A Tactical Analysis”. This book breaks down the horrific shooting of four CHP officers and what was learned. Mike also is a firearms instructor, teaches at the NTOA (National Tactical Officers Association) and s columnist for PoliceOne.com. His column is called Tactical Analysis and provides insight on how officers can better protect themselves out on the streets.

Eric Grauffel is by far one of the best shooters in the world. He’s won seven World Championships in Practical Shooting (IPSC) and shoots in several divisions. Eric always dominates the competition and is known for being a Terminator on the range.
Eric is from France and was a guest on the 2017 Shooter’s Summit. He also has been going at the fitness aspect of shooting and totally changed his program to include workouts along with shooting practice. With the COVID pandemic, Eric was able to start instructing online and now has a waitlist to get into the program.

BJ Norris is a World Champion. BJ shoots a bunch of shooting sports but is known for his killer speed at Steel Challenge. He has won numerous World Championships in that sport as well as top placements in USPSA, IDPA, IPSC, and 3 Gun.

Chili Palmer (his nickname) was one of the military advisors for the hit Netflix film “Extraction” starring Chris Hemsworth. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I have to say why not? If you are into excellent action movies with fantastic gunplay, then “Extraction” is for you. Too often Hollywood gets it wrong with things like taking the safety off a Glock or holding a pistol with a crazy grip. What about non-existent reloads?
All of this can take people in the know (like the folks of the Firearms Nation) out of the movie and walking away with a big thumbs down. Well, the producers of “Avenger’s Endgame” and “Captain America: Civil War” got it right. They hired Chili Palmer.
Chili was not the only advisor on the film but his contributions made the climax of the film stand out as one of the best action sequences in a long time. Watch it you’ll see what I mean.
The movie “Extraction” came out last weekend and after watching it, I reached out to Chili who graciously accepted to come on and share some of his experiences and participating on the set.
Chili served in the Army for 25 years and had over 13 deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. His first mission was the historic raid in Panama taking in the corrupt Manuel Noriega into custody. Chili served in the Unit alongside Kyle Lamb, who happened to be on last week’s episode and is an instructor for Viking Tactics as well.

Kyle Lamb is a former Army veteran who served the majority of time in Special Operations, and in the Unit (SOFD-D Delta Force). Most people just say “The Unit”. During that time he served in Iraq, Bosnia, and fought in the Battle of Mogadishu.
Once he left the military, Kyle starting teaching firearms instruction and also formed his gear company, Viking Tactics. Kyle has also written several shooting books and a book on leadership called “Leadership in the Shadows” (which he narrates the audiobook version). Kyle also has a very successful podcast, “Team VTAC Podcast” where he interviews other gun industry people and covers historical events.
Kyle is currently writing two more books that we talk about on this show.

Jack Carr is a former Navy SEAL who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Once he retired from the Navy, Jack went on to pursue his second career goal of becoming a fiction writer.
Jack released his first book, “The Terminal List” in 2018 and followed up with the highly successful “True Believer” in 2019. Both stories contained the same main character, James Reece who was also a Navy SEAL. The great thing about those two novels was the fact the Jack was a been there, done that kind of guy so he infused the stories with realistic tactics and a strong knowledge of guns and gear.
On April 14th, 2020, Jack’s third book, “Savage Son” will be released. It was great having Jack on the podcast to discuss his new book as well as other interesting topics.

Joel is a competitive shooter in USPSA and also is a firearms instructor. One of the unique competitions Joel shoots are bowling pin matches. Bowling pin competitions are fast and it’s “man on man” shoot-offs. The mental challenges are very high and Joel’s methods of practice and mental management lead him to success.

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be in a gunfight? Chances are if you are listening to this podcast you might carry a gun on a daily basis. You might be a competitive shooter or an armed professional. Either way, anyone who has picked up a firearm has had the thought to themselves “what would I do?”
This week I’m starting a new series of podcast episodes where I deconstruct gunfights and speak to subjects who were involved and walked away. I get into the circumstances of the event and break down the play by play of the shooting. The actions of the bad guys as well as the tactics the winners, not survivors, used to overcome the odds. I’ll look at what lessons can be learned from the event so that you can develop your mindset and train accordingly.
I came up with this idea for the series after interviewing Scott Reitz on episode 57. Scott, the former LAPD SWAT officer, was involved in five gunfights in his career and was able to teach the lessons he learned to his students.
In this first episode, I’m also speaking with a law enforcement officer who’s been in multiple gunfights. Jared Reston works for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and is a SWAT officer. He is also a firearms instructor for his company the Reston Group. On January 26th, 2008, Jared was working an off duty detail at a shopping mall when security notified him and his partner of two shoplifters attempting to flee. One of the shoplifters ran away and Jared chased after him. After catching up to the suspect, Jared got into a confrontation with him and thought he was punched in the face. In reality, the suspect had been able to draw his gun and shoot Jared in the mouth.
Once Jared fell down an embankment, the suspect went in to finish Jared off, but Jared’s will to win kicked in and the gunfight was on. Find out what Jared did to win on this first episode of Deconstructing Gunfights.

Ernest Langdon Served 12 years on active duty in the US Marine Corps. Throughout that career, he was stationed in Panama as well as the Persian Gulf. Some of his duties included being the Chief Instructor for the 2nd Marine Division Scout Sniper School and at the High Risk Personnel Course. Jennifer Fulford was a deputy sheriff back in 2004 when she went to a suspicious incident call. A child on the phone was stating strange men were in the house and on arrival she met up with the female homeowner who was acting strange. It turned out three men were inside committing an armed home invasion.
Jennifer got into a gunfight with two of the men and despite being shot multiple times, she was able to take out both suspects. The third suspect gave up.
Jennifer went on to have a career in law enforcement and now talks to other officers on how to survive critical events.

Jeremy Griffin is a classic entrepreneur who has put his resources into starting a new kind of shooting sport. Dropzone Gunner is basically an outdoor obstacle race with shooting mixed into it. Rossen Hristov is an instructor at the Tactical Performance Center out in Utah. Rossen, who is originally from Bulgaria, met up with Ron Avery and the two hit it off when it came to understanding the path to become a better shooter. Both of them had a foundation in the martial arts and brought that over to Ron’s scientific approach and teaching style. Frank Proctor is a veteran of Special Forces and served for over 20 years. Frank is also a competitive shooter in USPSA and started competing when he was in the Army. He quickly rose the ranks to grandmaster and found that his competitive skills helped him in the tactical arena.

Hilton Yam is a retired FBI Agent who spent a career putting away violent criminals and teaching firearms. He got started in shooting by competing in IPSC and learning about firearms from Bruce Gray. Along the way, Hilton began his work on 1911 guns and eventually formed his company, 10-8 Performance. That company went on to produce handgun sights for a variety of common handguns like Glock and Smith & Wesson MP line. Now that Hilton retired, I was able to sit down and discuss his work as well as get Hilton’s take on handguns and shooting.

Christian Sailer just won the USPSA Area 6 Championship and is only 18 years old. He’s on his way to becoming a National Champion and from there he hope to win at the upcoming World Shoot. Dave Spaulding was a part of law enforcement for 36 years. During that time he was on his agency’s SWAT team, worked narcotics and was a trainer. Dave has gone to multiple schools and taught at law enforcement conferences and seminars. When Dave retired, he went on to become a full time instructor and opened his own training company, Handgun Combatives.

Nick Yanutola - is a Grandmaster in Production. Nick started in IDPA and quickly shot up the ranks and won High Overall at the Carolina Cup in 2014. Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. I had the opportunity to be a guest on the Sheepdog Nation Podcast and was very intrigued by the host, Autumn Clifford. Autumn is a nine year law enforcement officer and started a podcast to get her thoughts out into the world and ended up gaining a following. Now her podcast also has guests on each week. Furthermore, she started a membership site for officers and other people interested in becoming better leaders which is a passion of hers.
Autumn prides herself with her background in the martial arts as something that brought her confidence and helped her as a woman succeed in law enforcement. When I think of an army sniper, I usually think of Bob Lee Swagger, tough, gritty, All-American and not giving a crap. But I was surprised when I spoke with guest that he not only was a sniper, but a lawyer, professor, writer and app developer.
Ryan Cleckner is an US Army Ranger Sniper and served two combat deployments in Afghanistan. Once he left the Army, Ryan took a different route and went to law school. Along the way he also worked for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and Remington Outdoor Company. Ryan also started teaching Constitutional Law at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Ryan is an author who not only writes articles online but he published two books: The Long Range Shooting Handbook and There’s Only One You, which is a gun safety book for children. Both are very successful.
Finally, Ryan has a significant online presence with his Mayday Safety app which is meant to get your list of people to know when your in trouble and Rocket FFL, which is an online training course to get your Federal Firearms License. With his little bit of free time Ryan also produces two podcasts.

Dave “Boon” Benton was one of four contractors who held the line in Benghazi when all odds were against them. Boon also had served previously in the Marine Corps and as a deputy sheriff. Currently Boon is teaching tactics and shooting to civilians and law enforcement.
In today’s episode, I talk to Boon about his training, competition, how to develop courage and even a little bit about his favorite movie topic, “Star Wars”. At Boon’s request we are not discussing the incident in Benghazi at this time, but we do find out what gun choice he uses for home defense.

I had an interview ready to go when the computer took a dump and the recording got screwed up. Instead of trying to re-record, I decided to bring out one of the excellent interviews from the 2018 Shooter’s Summit. This week I bring back a guest I had on in 2017, now grandmaster competitor Mason Lane. Mason also is teaching at the SigSauer Academy and had a great year in 2018 coming in 4th at Nationals in Carry Optics (the guns with the red dots on them). Mason is part of these young up in comers dominating USPSA. Not to mention he’s a really nice guy and friend. In the interview you’ll hear me reference a video of a drill he did for the Summit. Each of the instructors this year provided a video drill that they felt either helped them make grandmaster or give out to students for their journey.

Happy New Year! 2019 is looking to be a great and interesting year and I’m excited to share the year with you, the firearms nation. Last year I finished the third shooters summit and it got me looking at all the great interviews I’ve done since I began the summits. One interview I always liked was with a guy that a lot in the community don’t know much about. His name is Gabe White and he’s a shooting instructor in Oregon with his company, Pistol Shooting Solutions. While Gabe is known for teaching defensive pistol, he also tests his skills in USPSA and achieved a Master classification shooting Limited from concealment. Gabe also is the only person to every shoot the challenging Rogers Shooting School Test from concealment. Gabe has a very analytical approach to shooting, vision and practice so as we all get busy training again or want to start training with our handguns, I thought I would share this interview from the 2017 Shooter’s Summit.

I was able to train with Yong Lee for the first time since I met him when we were on TEAM SIG. This past weekend I took his first Advanced Pistol Optic Management course. It was definitely an eye opener when it comes to shooting a red dot on a pistol. With more agencies going to the red dot, I wanted to share some of the insights I took away from this class. Yong is retiring from law enforcement and will be teaching this class around the country.

Riley recently completed a study on Active Shooter events and how many were stopped by a armed citizens. You will be surprised when you hear the number. This is often not talked about by national media and when you look at the facts..well they don’t lie.

I’m back with another competitive shooter and now National Champion. Max Leograndis only started shooting four years ago, almost to the day this podcast is being recorded. In four years he developed his own method of practice, not taking classes, not seeking out a coach, but rather closely watching himself and figuring out what to do to get better. How to be more efficient. And now Max took first in PCC at the National Championships that just wrapped up in Florida. PCC or Pistol Caliber Carbine is shooting a rifle in a pistol match. How much fun is that!
Max has won numerous titles this year including the 2018 Lucas Oil PCC World Championship, a match that last year he was disqualified from. Max shares that story in the podcast as well as how he used video games to help him get a faster trigger finger and develop mental management. Max is now an instructor at the highly regarded Tactical Performance Center and talks about how he came so far in such a short amount of time.

David Harsanyi’s latest book is “First Freedom: A Ride Through America’s Enduring History with the Gun” and was released earlier this month. If there was a book that represented the cause and feeling of my show and channel, Firearms Nation, “First Freedom” comes very close. It’s a book I found to be a good read and took value in all the historical facts. I have a good idea on the origins of several iconic firearms but I was impressed at the lessons included in the book that superimposed how those firearms came to be. America has a history wrapped in firearms and a right of self-defense.

Normally on my deconstructing gunfight series I talk to guests who were involved in a shooting were both sides shot back. For today’s episode I my guest was shot multiple times responding to a disturbance call which really was a violent home invasion. Officer James Kuzak served for 18 years up to the that fateful day where he found himself saving the lives of the woman and children inside but ended up paralyzed after being shot.
James was rescued and survived the shooting and trial, but then had to get on with the rest of his life. A life no longer as a law enforcement officer. James told me that the one thing he never thought about on the job was being shot and ending up a different person. Many of us in law enforcement or the military will think about surviving a gunfight but most think about walking away from the injuries. James did not walk ever again and now speaks at academies and is a brand ambassador for Glock. I was put in touch with James after a friend saw him shooting a USPSA match wearing the Glock jersey and James was gracious enough to share his story with the podcast.

Welcome back to the firearms nation podcast. The build up to this year’s massive 9 Days of Nationals for the USPSA is about to start in little more than a week. I’ve interviewed some of the top contenders for this year’s championship to help give you a better idea what perfomance on demand with a handgun entails. This week I give you one more interview with another top champion. JJ Racaza was born in the Philippines and started shooting at a young age. JJ went to the range with his father who was also a competitive shooter who ended up sacrificing his hobby to help his son grow in the sport and see him become a world champion.
JJ became somewhat of a media celebrity for being a third place performer on the successful TV series “Top Shot” and showed the world how fast someone can shoot. JJ always was a fast shooter and brought his natural speed and physicality to the sport. With this background he took the world championship speed shoot or steel challenge three times and broke multiple speed shooting records. He also took the silver medal twice at the IPSC World Shoots in 2011 and 2014.
In today’s interview JJ talks about growing up in the Philippines and how that culture shaped his life. How his focus on physical performance is the majority of his current training and finally how he plans to compete at this year’s Nationals.
I was excited to get JJ to talk to me despite his busy schedule and work demands.

Last year I had Hwansik Kim on the podcast and was amazed to hear his story (that was Ep. 31) Hwansik came from Korea and was a self described geek who was chubby and uncoordinated. He was introduced to competitive shooting and took his ability to study and research to excel in USPSA in a very short time. Now Hwansik is a very strong contender to win at this year’s National Championship which begins later this month.
In one year Hwansik shared with me that he completely changed his shooting style. Plus, he just launched a joint project with World Champ Ben Stoeger called PSTG or Practical Shooting Training Group. It’s a web based training membership site which we talk about in the podcast. With Nationals coming up, I wanted to get some of the best competitors on the show to get everyone training for the event pumped up. Not to mention the nuggets of information they provide any type of shooter.
Fair warning: This episode gets deep into the mechanics of top performance from Hwansik. Seriously if you have a pen and paper, there is a ton of material Hwansik talks about. What is a factory team? SIG, Glock, Remington and so on. And the names include some of the people I’ve had on the podcast like Shane Coley and KC Eusebio. Today, my guest is also from the AMU, Jacob Hetherington.
Jacob was known as a top junior shooter not that long ago. It’s pretty amazing how a kid made grandmaster at 15 years old and caught the eye of the AMU where he is serving and promoted to sergeant not that long ago. This past year Jacob has been dominating his division in USPSA and is in contention to win this year’s National Championship. So how did a such a young man do so much in his shooting career?
In this podcast you’ll hear about what it’s like to be a part of Army Marksmanship Unit, what “pressure poops” are and what to tell your junior shooter (if you have one) to focus on when coaching them.
I recently interviewed Lanny Bassham in episode 80, who also was a major force at the AMU. It was great to now hear from a dedicated young man continuing that tradition.
This week I bring out a session from the 2017 Shooter’s Summit that I recorded with Bob Vogel. Bob is a world champion, national champion and has won 90 plus matches since he started competing. Bob was also a police officer, SWAT team member and firearms instructor. In fact, since he retired from law enforcement, he still makes a living teaching people to become better shooters.
Along the way he’s also made several videos on pistol shooting and competition. Interesting enough, Bob was one of the only people to ever beat the world’s best shooter (and podcast guest #79) Eric Grauffel in a shooting competition (I was there!) In today’s podcast, Bob goes over the fundamentals of pistol shooting, how important grip and grip strength is, why a timer is so important to training and finally, why going fast is the best strategy.

95% of all winning comes from the same 5% of the competitors. What makes them different than the rest of us? Their mental game is better than the others. Anyone can practice a sport or hobby and develop skill at that sport, but the ones with a better mental system will always win in the end. How does a person get a better mental game? My guest today started out as the guy least likely to get to the Olympics as a small kid in 6th grade. Fast forward to the 1976 Olympics where my guest, Lanny Bassham took the gold medal in small bore rifle shooting. But it wasn’t an easy road. Lanny had previously gone to the ’72 Olympics and choked in the gold medal match where he walked away confused and with a silver medal. In the next four years he would develop his trademarked mental management system that in the past 40 years has lead many students to world championships and other victories.
How do we learn about this system? Lanny goes over the highlights from the system and his book he wrote, “With Winning in Mind” today with me. “With Winning in Mind” is mentioned several times in previous podcasts as one of the tools that took good shooters to make them great. This system also has been taught to special operations and Secret Service. You’ll learn today why you should value the process and not the outcome, highlight solutions and not problems and finally how to coach your kids to be winners.

What if you found out that all the years you’ve put in your shooting, that you were doing it all wrong…Well that’s how I felt after speaking with World Champion Eric Grauffel. I had the opportunity to speak with Eric on last year’s Shooter’s Summit. The Shooter’s Summit is an event I founded back in 2016 where I speak with competitive or tactical shooters on specific topics. Stay tuned to the end of the podcast to find out the date of this year’s Summit.
Eric is probably one of the best shooter’s in the world. I only remember one time in history where someone actually beat him in competition. We talk about that episode during my interview with Eric. I would easily say Eric falls in line with the Michael Jordans, Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzkys, Usain Bolts types of exceptional athletes. People refer to them as machines but it’s really us coming to terms about someone who is blessed with both talent and skill. Eric and discuss the basics of shooting and I learn that he does pretty much everything different when it comes to grip, sights and trigger. I don’t know what that means but it’s worth evaluating for yourself. That’s another takeaway from this interview: Learn to adjust your grip and shooting for what works for you, not what someone tells you is THE way.
Eric is a busy man shooting all over the world so I was lucky to get this interview and I’m happy to finally share it on the Firearms Nation Podcast. One of the distinct pleasures myself and a lot of other people enjoy is smoking a cigar while out on the range. I see it a lot at shooting competitions. I’ve also seen it after tactical classes. There is something about the concept of enjoying the cigar with friends that can’t be smoked in a hurry. I really don’t know where cigars and shooting came together, but it is something that my guest today knows a lot about. Kaizad Hansotia grew up in India with a love of watches and firearms. He ended up buying a dying cigar company for under $200 and made it into one of the top cigar brands in the world. Gurkha Cigars is named after the legendary fighters from Nepal who fought for the British in numerous wars. Their spirit is what drives Kaizad to constantly make top rated blends that sometime sell for thousands of dollars.
Along the way he made connections to the SEAL Teams and made a special cigar for them to travel with overseas. In fact his passion for firearms paired Gurkha and Grey Ghost Precision (a company who makes high end rifles and pistols) to design a limited edition rifle up to Kaizad’s specifications.
In this episode we explore the nexus between cigars and shooting, how Kaizad made his success as well as a primer on how to go about getting into cigar smoking. Granted I know some people hate the smell of cigars, but I have to say, sharing a smoke with some scotch and a group of friends is never a bad thing.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. About ten years ago I had the pleasure of being invited to a class devoted to pulling the trigger properly. It was a class on the basics but it wasn’t a basic class. In fact it was as someone coined it “..a PhD in trigger management”. This class also put me in touch with a renowned gunsmith and competitor Bruce Gray. Bruce and I maintained a friendship since that class and I even call him a mentor. And it was at the USPSA National Championship in 2014 when Bruce reached out to me right after the match with a text “Do you want to shoot for Team SIG?” He didn’t have to ask twice. For the next two years I had a blast shooting matches with a great group of guys and gals all running the new P320. That gun is still my competition gun and I also use it for duty.
Bruce has always been know as the go to guy to have your SIG or Sig Sauer pistol worked on to make it shoot even better. But since the P320 came around, his business took off with parts for it as well as SIG’s successful LEGION series. His company, Gray Guns, has grown and is in the process of moving to a bigger warehouse. More recently, Bruce dove back into competition and he is revisiting his methodologies that are now over 20 years old. I discuss with Bruce the differences as well as how us, as shooters, can over come our emotions while we shoot.

Recently there was a video release at a trial in Pennsylvania where two troopers were trying to arrest a suspect and he resisted. The suspect ended up shooting both of the officers and then fled the scene. Luckily they survived. How does this happen? According to a 2014 study, 83% of officers who are killed in the line of duty die conducting self-initiated activity in or around vehicles. That is an alarming statistic as I can tell you from personal experience that 83% of our training is not from a vehicle. So what can a law enforcement officer or civilian do? I include civilians since aggravated assaults and robberies also are around vehicles.
My guest is William Petty from Centrifuge Training. William specializes in teaching close quarter vehicle tactics and his program is a data driven exercise in what works and what doesn’t when in a gunfight around a car.
William and I discuss the Pennsylvania shooting with his takeaways on tactics that would have helped the troopers as well as another shooting of cops in Sacramento. William also gives away a list of actionable ideas you can implement into your arsenal and ways for you to win in a vehicle gunfight.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. I’ve been shooting a gun for over 15 years. That includes time as a law enforcement officer as well as a competitive shooter. Plus, there is the training and dry fire practice. Unfortunately, I’ve developed time and again, a horrible disgusting pain in my elbow that sometimes is unbearable. And I’m not alone. Millions of people suffer from tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow or something called shooter’s elbow. This is tendonitis or more appropriately tendinosis.
My guest today is an expert in healing the walking wounded. Whether it’s tennis elbow, back pain or neck pain, Chad Reilly has been a physical therapist for over 11 years and he’s also a Master class shooter. Chad placed 12th in the USPSA National Championship back in 2011 and has developed a treatment that has cured some of the top professional shooters as well as SWAT personnel.
Chad’s approach is not only based in logic but through his clinical studies and evidence based research. He doesn’t regurgitate the old treatment of rest, ice and massage simply because science has now shown those techniques will not work for this problem.
As I currently suffer from a severe case of tennis elbow I get evaluated by Chad and he comes up with a plan that I will try and of course, report my results over on the Firearms Nation Facebook page.
This is a fascinating interview with lots of great advice to help all of you or someone you know who has this same problem.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. I’ve been fortunate in my competitive shooting career to be a part of a gun manufacturer’s factory team. From 2014-2016 I was a part of Team Sig or Sig Sauer and from that team I met a variety of folks from the company. One of them was an instructor from the Sig Academy who had a background in the Federal Air Marshal service. Hana Bilodeau started as a local police officer then moved on to become an Air Marshal. Being in that position brought her to the attention of the academy who then hired her full time. More recently Hana was promoted to Director of Training for all of Sig Sauer.
Closer to home, Hana was part of the 2017 Shooter’s Summit. She is a contributing writer for RECOIL magazine and now has been shooting videos for shows on some big named cable networks. Hana’s specialty was teaching female shooters and we get into some of the obstacles she had to overcome as a female in a male dominated industry.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. I just got back from shoot ing the 2018 IPSC US Nationals at the Universal Shooting Academy and first off, I have to say this was an excellent match and thanks to Frank Garcia and Shannon Smith plus all the range officers for putting on the match. This is a very important match as it serves as one of the qualifiers to be a part of the next World Shoot coming up in a couple years. I believe it’s going to be in Thailand. IPSC rules are different than USPSA rules which is the action pistol sports that I compete in. I still feel that competition is the best way to get better at shooting. But that leads me to today’s podcast.
One of the big takeaways from the match was the constant negativity that I heard from other competitors. Everyone would only talk about their misses or other screw ups. How their time sucked, or they screwed up their stage plan. Even worse when someone gave them a complement, that person would down play it and again bring up their mistakes. Why can’t we focus on the positive? What is this fascination with being a loser?
I bring back on the show, Steve Anderson who is one of the top instructors who talks a lot about the mental game and the keys to being successful. Steve has written three books on the subject and also has his own podcast, That Shooting Show, which discusses in detail, between Van Halen breaks, how we need to know what our level of participation is and define success. Steve also has been on the Shooter’s Summit and I knew after hearing about all this misery…that I needed to discuss what we can do to change our mental programing.

This week I was prepping for the 2018 IPSC US Nationals which was held at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, FL. The match director was Shannon Smith who always puts on a terrific competition. I recently had Shannon on my second YouTube live stream and this is the audio replay from that show. The focus of the show was shooting the red dot sight for competition or duty/everyday carry. We also get into some match specific advice after taking questions from the audience. Jon Dufresne and Scott Jedlinski are two up in coming instructors. They are the new generations of firearms preachers who take what is known about shooting and format it to a more modern approach.
Jon is a former Army Ranger who now teaches for Sage Dynamics and for Frank Proctor. Jon not only was a guest of the podcast but was a Shooter’s Summit instructor.
Scott Jedlinski or “Jedi” teaches under his own company, Modern Samurai Project and is an avid Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and master class competitive shooter.
Both teach classes with the red dot sight on pistols and that’s where I was with them.
On today’s podcast, I’m recording a different kind of interview. I interview both Jon and Jedi after day one of the Modern Samurai Project’s Red Dot Pistol Course at the awesome Homestead Training Center in Homestead FL.
So a couple of notes. Yes, this is being recorded on a live range at the end of the day and “That Guy” showed up at the very end to shoot in the next bay. He had to dump his ammo. So that being said, there will be some gunshots in the background. Also, I learned that the type of mic you use on a range is important and I had to use some noise reduction on Jon’s and Jedi’s tracks..so you don’t need to tell me your heard some hiss in the background. You might not notice it.
I’m learning the red dot myself and I’ll be competing with it and this year’s IPSC Nationals next week. Lots of knowledge bombs in the range podcast. Enjoy…

There have been a few events in law enforcement history that went on to change policies across police departments. On February 28th, 1997, the North Hollywood Shootout would leave a gaping wound of how outgunned police really were.
In the second episode of the Deconstructing Gunfight series, I talk with former Los Angeles Police Department officer John Caprarelli who was one of the responding officers that fateful day. John had spent 15 years as a police officer and had been in various units but nothing would have prepared him for what he was going to face that day.
Larry Phillips and Emil Matasareanu were a pair of bank robbers who had escalated to murder during a previous heist. Their acts of violence got worse each time they committed another robbery. On Feb. 28th, 1997 they hit the Bank of America in North Hollywood. They were prepared. Each of the men were covered in layers of body armor and both carried fully automatic rifles and hundreds of rounds. The LAPD had handguns and shotguns. What follows is a first hand account that comes from the book John wrote called “Uniform Decisions”.
In this second episode I’ll find out what is was like to face men who had no regard for life or the law. Men who would rather die than get caught. We also discuss the aftermath and the wounds not just of the body but of the mind and John’s second fight, the fight with PTSD.
It was truly an honor to speak to John who now enjoys retirement about what it was like to be there amid the rounds flying through the air and a city on edge in this second episode of Deconstructing Gunfights.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. Imagine you start competing in the shooting sports about 4 years ago. Imagine you decide to start shooting shotgun exclusively in competition. Imagine you go to the IPSC World Shoot for Shotgun earlier this month and finally, imagine waking up on June 11th to find out your the World Champion. Josh Froelich didn’t have to imagine any of this…he lived it.
Josh always had a competitive gene in his body that made him play sports growing up. In fact he supported himself and paid for college not by working at a fast food restaurant but by fighting professionally in MMA. But something happened in 2014. Josh decided he wanted to be better at shooting and went to his local IDPA match and the shooting gene kicked in. Fast forward a second and it’s June 2018 where he’s standing on the podium in France representing his country as a gold medal winner in the Open Division.
I get to talk to Josh about his journey and the World Shoot. We also discuss the little things like how he won matches and how to shoot the dot in Open or Carry Optics, and of course..how to be fast (which is why you’re in Open anyways).
I found Josh to be down to Earth as most people from the Mid-West tend to be. Hardworking, devoted and willing to get the job done with a bunch of practice.

Brian Enos is considered to be one of most critical thinkers in the realm of handgun shooting. In 1990 he wrote the book (link below) "Practical Shooting: Beyond Fundamentals" which is the collection of over ten years of notes and ideas Brian had regarding pistol shooting and competition.
Brian was raised in Ohio but moved to Arizona to work at the State Prison where he first learned about shooting competitions. Soon the bug of shooting hit him and he shot a PPC (Police Practical Combat) match and then he quickly moved to IPSC competitions. At his first match he met Rob Leatham and they became friends and training partners. The two dominated the local and state matches and then they went national shooting Steel Challenge. Brian's journey continued and he realized he enjoyed a different kind of match such as the Bianchi Cup, The Masters and the Sportsman's Team Challenge. He won the Bianchi Cup in 1983 and 1984 and the Masters in 1989 plus he was a five time member of the Sportsman's Team Challenge National championship. He also qualified for the US Gold Team for IPSC multiple years.
Brian was a sponsored shooter for many years but in 1991 he left his sponsors and Bianchi Cup matches for the new USPSA and it's new Limited Division. He shot USPSA and Steel Challenge until 2000 and then won multiple Area and National championships. In the year 2000 he retired from competition and built a website and forum (Enos Forum) which is the largest competitive shooting forum on the internet.
Brian also developed a gun lubricant "Slide-Glide" which has the ability to stay on parts and protect firearms from wear and corrosion. It also softens felt recoil in pistols.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. One of the great parts of producing this podcast is getting to speak with world champions, elite soldiers and brand ambassadors. I’m lucky today to bring back an extremely talented, super nice and professional sponsored shooter, Jessie Harrison. Jessie first came on the the podcast back on Episode 7 which was recorded at the 2017 SHOT Show. And just for the record for all you that fact check, I mention in todays podcast that I sat with Jessie in 2016, but as we get older, our memories get cloudier so keep that in mind (no pun).
So why am I bringing Jessie back on? If you don’t know who she is, Jessie was the first grandmaster female shooter in USPSA. The grandmaster classification is awarded to literally like 5% of all of the 30000 competitors. The GMs are the top and some are considered professional shooters…meaning they get paid to shoot matches and be brand ambassadors. A dream job for a lot of people, including me. But for the most part we mortals would be happy getting sponsored for equipment or support and being able to throw the company logo on are shooting shirts. Jessie and I discuss the pros and cons of sponsorship and what you can do to get sponsored.
We also talk about the stress of the mental game in shooting competition which is one of the only sports where the competitor is left to figure out how to shoot and compete on their own. Hours of self-reflection and practice for a 10 to 30 second event.
I’m very pleased to talk to Jessie who is coming off of another steel challenge victory and is preparing for the World Steel Challenge in two weeks from the time this podcast is being recorded.

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be in a gunfight? Chances are if you are listening to this podcast you might carry a gun on a daily basis. You might be a competitive shooter or armed professional. Either way anyone who has picked up a firearm has had the thought to themselves “what would I do?”
This week I’m starting a new series of podcast episodes where I deconstruct gunfights and speak to subjects who were involved and walked away. I get into the circumstances of the event and break down the play by play of the shooting. The actions of the bad guys as well as the tactics the winners, not survivors, used to overcome the odds. I’ll look at what lessons can be learned from the event so that you can develop your mindset and train accordingly.
I came up with this idea for the series after interviewing Scott Reitz on episode 57. Scott, the former LAPD SWAT officer, was involved in five gunfights in his career and was able to teach the lessons he learned to his students.
On this first episode I’m also speaking with a law enforcement officer who’s been in multiple gunfights. Jared Reston works for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and is a SWAT officer. He is also a firearms instructor for his company the Reston Group. On January 26th, 2008, Jared was working an off duty detail at a shopping mall when security notified him and his partner of two shoplifters attempting to flee. One of the shoplifters ran away and Jared chased after him. After catching up to the suspect, Jared got into a confrontation with him and thought he was punched in the face. In reality the suspect had been able to draw his gun and shoot Jared in mouth.
Once Jared fell down an embankment, the suspect went in to finish Jared off, but Jared’s will to win kicked in and the gunfight was on. Find out what Jared did to win on this first episode of Deconstructing Gunfights.

Mini-red dot sights or just “red dots” on pistols is not a new thing, however, more and more people are finally adopting them. Pretty much every handgun manufacturer is building optic ready guns and some are selling the guns with the optic already on it. Carry Optics is a very popular division in USPSA with the other shooting sports following suit. Instagram is also flooded with photos of tactical folk driving their gats with red dots and compensators. But with all the new guns with optics, how does one learn to shoot them?
Well today I’m glad to welcome back the crowd favorite, the keeper of the title with most downloaded podcast, SWAT officer, firearms trainer, and 4 division grandmaster..Yong Lee.
I’ve known Yong for many years and shot with him when we were on Team SIG together. Yong also was a speaker on the first Shooter’s Summit. One of the most distinguishing facets about Yong is his ability to shooter extremely fast and accurate. I’ll link to his YouTube channel so you can see him shooting and you’ll be amazed at the superhuman trigger speed he can produce.
Yong is currently teaching an instructor course for his department on transitioning officers to using red dot pistol on duty. I’m also in the process myself of getting a red dot for work and competition so I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to pick his brain. As more people go to the red dots, we need to train so we can be just as proficient as Yong…well, maybe just be proficient.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. What makes one person go on to achieve the highest level in their endeavors or hobbies always fascinates me. Whether it’s getting a black belt or making grandmaster in competitive shooting, the practice and talent always seem to get together. For some, the goal is elusive and unattainable but for a few, they can achieve it and sometimes at an accelerated pace.
Charlie Perez is one such individual. Charlie, like me, came to competitive pistol shooting later in life and he went from unclassified or novice to grandmaster in 18 months. It wasn’t just that he out practiced everyone. It’s that his nature is very analytical and he understood exactly what he needed to practice instead of copying the standard routines of drawing the gun and reloads.
Charlie also went on to become a top level competitor in the sport of USPSA or practical shooting where we “run and gun” with pistols. Along the way and years later, Charlie now is an instructor and just released his first book on shooting and competition called “Path to Focused Effort”. You don’t have to be into competition to listen to some interesting nuggets on shooting especially his complete analysis on the shooting grip and what misunderstanding there are out there regarding it. He also talks about shooting sooner rather than faster which I think puts everything into perspective.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. I’ve always been fascinated by people who have a full time job but then pursue other ventures such as creating a podcast. Something that I can totally relate to. I have always been a fan of the podcasting space and gave up on terrestrial radio 15 years ago when I started to patrol on the midnight shift. Listening to podcasts helped pass the time plus there were no annoying ads. One of the podcasts I listen to now is called the Squad Room hosted by Garrett TeSlaa who is a sergeant at a sheriff’s department in Southern California.
The Squad Room podcast has interesting guest who cover all aspects of personal development specifically for law enforcement officers but the ideas and strategies can be applied to everyday civilians. Wether it’s how to get better sleep or what to do if you find yourself in the middle of a gunfight, this podcast does an excellent job of transmitting quality information.
Garrett shares a similar story of how he became a cop and the choices he makes each day when out patrolling the streets. I found the interview fascinating and once your are done with my show, please check out the Squad Room Podcast, especially if you are or going to be working in law enforcement.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. My guest today is by far one of the fastest shooters in competition. KC Eusebio started shooting at the ripe old age of 9 years old and made the rank of Grandmaster in USPSA at 12 which still is a record. He is a National and World Champion and holds many speed steel, also known as Steel Challenge records for the fastest times. KC was selected for the prestigious US ARMY Marksmanship Unit or AMU and enlisted for a four year tour of duty. There he trained other soldiers as well as help the recruitment operations of the Army. When he discharged he signed on to TEAM GLOCK and shot for them for three years and over 40 competitions around the world.
Now KC has his own training company which he founded with another speed shooter and first lady of shooting, Jessie Harrison. Their company, MetaGroup, started teaching civilians, LE and military personnel in not only pistol skills but long range rifle and tactical medicine. They have their first Meta Group Skills Summit coming up in this October where for three days students will be provided guns and ammo and can focus on learning all sorts of skillsets to be a better shooter.

Have you ever wondered what you would do or how you would react to being in an actual gunfight? What kind of training do you do to prepare for it? Do you have the mindset to win? It would be nice to know the answers to those questions..well today my guest has been “down range” as they say and can tell you what you need. You need to be well versed in the basics of shooting. Simple as that.
My guest is Bob Keller who is currently a firearms instructor for his company, Gamut Resolutions. Bob is a veteran of US Army Special Operations and completed several deployments overseas where he engaged in combat against the enemy. When he retired he saw that there was an abundance of training over social media that focused on matters that don’t really help you in live fire engagements and decided to put up his shingle and teach law enforcement and civilians what they needed to do to win if they ever needed to defend themselves with a firearm.
In addition to his training company, Bob also has several videos with Pantaeo Productions on rifle and handgun and recently introduced a signature rifle that just hit the market.
When talking to Bob it was apparent he has a laid back personality with the confidence of a man who has nothing to prove. His enforcement of the basics and the simplicity of getting it done, comes from being someone who analyzed what works and what doesn’t and now can transmit it back to his students. I agree with that philosophy and believe you should take that attitude with everything you do so you can throw out the fluff that while might be fun, doesn’t help you excel towards mastery.

Welcome back to another episode of the firearms nation podcast. In the world of law enforcement, tactical firearms instruction and SWAT teams, one man stands out as a leader in all those arenas. Scott Reitz served on the LAPD for 30 years. Scott started on patrol and worked his way to the Special Problems Unit, which handled the druggies and other issues in the Wilshire and Van Nuys divisions. From there he made “Metro” which is an elite division in the LAPD and then finally after about ten years he got on the SWAT team.
The history of law enforcement comes from departments like the LAPD or NYPD and it’s important to remember the cases and shootouts that formed tactical training including firearms. Scott or “Uncle Scotty” was in five shootings durning his career and learned not only the technical skills, but the overwhelming legal battles that will follow any gunfight whether you are a cop or civilian. In fact, Scott now serves as an expert in deadly force and testifies in many federal and superior court trials.
I had the pleasure of having Uncle Scotty train me almost ten years ago and the lessons I took away from that class were incorporated into almost every training class I taught as a firearms instructor. To this day, I still remember some nuggets that have kept me alive when dealing with the criminals on the streets.
We also talk about his book “The Art of Modern Gunfighting Vol.1” and the sequel coming out later this year.

This podcast is a little different than the normal fare as I discuss a dark time in the world’s history. I was given a copy of the book, Gun control in the third reich several years ago and was moved after reading it. The author, Stephen Halbrook, is a well regarded attorney who has argued cases in front of the Supreme Court and won. Stephen is also somewhat of a historian and has written several books including this one.
Nazi Germany brings up a slew of emotions from hatred to sorrow depending on your preceptive. The book begins immediately after the first world war when Germany was in turmoil and violence was on the rise. Gun laws were passed that were severe but also began the process of registration of ownership. Something that would later haunt the populace especially the Jewish Germans. The warnings were there that lists of gun owners could fall into the wrong hands of an extremist group…and that’s exactly what happened.
So I ask you to come with me as I go back to the 1920 and 30s in Germany were we discover one of the major aspects to why Hitler and his Nazi party were so successful..

Steve Tarani is the first person to be interviewed twice on the Firearms Nation Podcast! Steve is a rather imposing fellow, tall, strong and well versed in multiple ways to take you down. He has studied numerous martial arts, mostly from the devastating knife arts of the Philippines and Indonesia or Eskrima and Silat. Today I was joined by Phil Strader who is currently the Pistol Product Manager at Sig Sauer, which makes some of the finest firearms in the world. Phil is the spearhead of the new P320 series of striker fired handguns that have been taking the market to task. With this pistol Sig got the Army pistol contract and more recently was awarded the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) contract. It is the gun I shoot with and carry every day. Last year the gun was surrounded by controversy over failing a certain unmeasured drop safety test. I talk to Phil about this and how Sig overcame the issue.
Phil previously not only worked for Remington, but was the past president of the USPSA who, under his tenure, brought about some major changes including the Carry Optics division. Phil also started his career as a law enforcement officer working for the Capitol Police. Oh, and along the way he's won major shooting championships and we talk about being a winner.

Shane Coley is the son of a law enforcement officer who grew up in Mississippi playing baseball and football. But what Shane really liked was going to the range with dad and learning how to shoot. Soon Shane began competing in USPSA and started winning matches. That caught the eyes of the scouts from the Army Marksmanship Unit who recruited Shane to enlist. Shane spent seven years in the Army and when he left, Shane was fortunate enough to be hired by Glock, Inc. to be Team Captain. Shane enjoys the life of a professional shooter and also incorporates Crossfit into his training. Shane learned early on that the body should be a peak performance to settle the mind and win matches.

Iain Harrison holds the title of being the first winner of the shooting reality TV show Top SHOT! Iain used that victory to enter the world of firearms and began working in the industry doing PR at the laser grip company CrimsonTrace. Adam Kraut is running for the NRA Board of Directors. Adam is a lawyer and worked at a gun store before he got into the arena of political action. Adam has shot firearms since he was a child and currently works on concealed carry issues in his state.
The election is in about two months so I wanted to discuss some of the issues with Adam to get his take on it. Adam is younger than most of the current board but he brings fresh ideas to a out of touch organization.

Ava Flanell is the host of the Gun Funny Podcast and is the owner and instructor at Elite Firearms and Training in Colorado. Randy Lee is the president and gunsmith at Apex Tactical, a company that specializes in gun parts for pistols. Scott Jedlinski also known as “Jedi” which is a very cool nickname to have, better than “gopher”..Scott is the brains and teacher for the Modern Samurai Project which is his training company. His primary focus is teaching students the fundamentals of shooting their handguns with mini red dot sights or RDS. Red dots on handguns are here and will be the future of shooting. Jedi also competes in USPSA as a Master class shooter in Carry Optics. He uses competition as a way to becoming a better shooter.
Scott is a strong proponent of hand to hand combat and regularly studies Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The similarity between BJJ and shooting is something Jedi teaches to his students. Finally, Scott is a sponsored shooter and shoots for Agency Arms with their Glock 34.
Three takeaways from today’s episode are 1) proving that red dot sights can shoot fine in the rain 2) Cat Crap is not from the litter box but is actually a great product that keeps glass from fogging up and 3) you can run a compensated pistol as an every day carry gun.

Alan Normandy is the brains and CEO of Battle Comp Enterprises which makes one of the most successful muzzle devices for AR-15 rifles. It’s called, well, the Battle Comp which is short for compensator. For the uninitiated, having a compensator allows gas to leave the rifle in a designed fashion. The Battle Comp made the rifle shoot with minimal muzzle rise and had a decent flash reducer. The timing was right and the internet helped skyrocket the comp to be a best seller.
But who is Alan Normandy. Alan served for 28 years as a police officer in South San Francisco. When he retired, he was a Lieutenant overseeing patrol and the Neighborhood Response Team. He also served on the departments SWAT Team and held a variety of duties during his tenure. Alan also found fame as a consultant for the very popular “Mythbusters” TV show which aired on the Discovery Channel.

Brian Wilson, not the singer, is the brain in charge at UM Tactical, a firearms accessory company. Brian is an insightful designer who worked in both the auto and home industries before falling into the world of firearms. By finding a solution to mounting a red dot on his handgun led him to rethinking parts on guns to make them run better.

My guest today has had an amazing shooting career…at the age of 19. Ashley Rheuark is a USPSA National Champion as well as a IDPA Distinguished Master. Ashley shoots not only USPSA and IDPA, but is a very strong competitor in 3-Gun. Since she became sponsored by the legendary Taran Butler, her talents thrived in competition, slamming down rifle stages like men two decades older than her.
Three takeaways from today’s show are 1) why physical fitness is important to be a strong competitor 2) try to just shoot the match, no matter what size it is and that way you won’t feel the pressure and 3) how to use video analysis to nit-pick your faults so you can improve.

I have to tell you there are not many people that make me feel old, but when I was talking to today’s guest, well that thought came into my mind. The young Mason Lane, who is one of the top competitors in the country, has accomplished so many titles and yet is only in his early twenties. You would think that someone so young would be arrogant and misbehaved but Mason comes from a disciplined family and was an Eagle Scout. Ideals that I fear are becoming out of vogue and corny for some but I respect him for the path he is following.
Mason also had a great year. I recently was able to bring on a bunch of competitors, specifically in action pistol who put in a huge amount of practice and work. Each one of them had the opportunity to go to the IPSC World Shoot which only happens every three years. But I was very interested to hear Mason’s journey as he is pretty young to be shooting on the world stage. Luckily for Mason, he is also sponsored by the Sig Sauer Academy in New Hampshire. The Sig Sauer Academy is one of the top training facilities in the United States and offer a ton of classes on a variety of shooting disciplines.
Three takeaways from today’s show are 1) why you need to use emotion in order to motivate you in training 2) why dry fire will take a so-so shooter and make them better and 3) to remember that if you are not having a good match or suck in practice, no one is going to remember that..but you.
Mason might be young but has a lot of great material.

What is it like to be a world champion? How much focus and dedication goes into performing at that level. Could you do it? Could you do it knowing this might be the last time you were able to go to a world championship?
Most competitive shooters in action pistol or USPSA (if you live in the US) know my guest as one of the best production class (that’s the somewhat stock guns) shooters. Ben Stoeger has won 6 national championships (five of them back to back) but never took first on the world stage..until this year. Ben achieved that goal but the win meant more to him. Earlier this year he was diagnosed with cancer and had an operation to remove it. Knowing that if it spread or reappeared he would never have the opportunity to get the world champion title. Going into the World Shoot in France this year, Ben secretly kept that feeling to himself but he was under an extreme amount of pressure.
In this episode three takeaways from Ben are 1) what is it like to compete under enormous pressure? 2) Why getting a sponsorship doesn’t mean free stuff and 3) training in the environment where you’ll be competing will give you an edge over other competitors.
Ben has a reputation as a bad boy in USPSA but after knowing him and what he’s been through he comes across as a knowledgeable instructor and champion.

How do you go from being a computer playing kid to number 2 at a National Championship? My guest today is Hwansik Kim, a 29 student raised in S. Korea. Hwansik or “Chic” as his friends call him picked up a real firearm only four years ago and started competing a year later. Today, he is sitting back after a great year taking 2nd at Optics Nationals and 5th at Iron Sight Nationals. What kind of drive and determination does it take to rise to that level?
Chic also shoots for Walther Arms as a sponsored shooter in addition to being a full time student. One thing I learned about Chic was how devoted to God and his faith he is after surviving a horrific car crash which changed his life. Chic spends hours a day not only practicing but studying videos of athletes from a variety of sports just to pick up their techniques for success.
In this episode you’ll learn how you can dry practice WITHOUT a gun. Why gripping the pistol as hard as you can will lead to predictable shots. And finally, how to occupy your mind to control anxiety and emotion during a match.

The name Blackwater brings out the mystic of the money for hired mercenary, traveling to a far land to get involved in things best left to tough men. The thrill a minute job speeding through the streets of a non-permissive environment trying to protect your client while being shot at. Who signs up for this kind of work? What are the job requirements?
My guest today worked for the notorious Blackwater private security company. Shannon Campbell was an avid martial artist who got into competitive shooting back in the early 90s. Next thing he new, he was sitting in a van being taught how to protect high value ambassadors with teammates fresh out of the “Teams” or “Recon”. Shannon thrived in this environment and spent years as a private security detail or PSD. He left that side of the house and began working for a training company that specializes in teaching mostly State Department officials how to survive in areas of the world where the US is not the most liked.
On today's show, Shannon explains what it’s like to be shot at when driving in Baghdad, what it takes to become the type of person who earns up to $1000 a day working a security detail in a war zone and finally, why shooting competition helped him survive critical incidents by teaching him how to process information faster.
This is a rare look at a shadow world with one of it’s warriors.

My guest this week is Shannon Smith. Shannon just got back from the 2017 World Shoot in France. The IPSC World Shoot takes place every three years and it’s comparable to the Olympics of the action shooting world. Shannon is a grand master shooter in USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) shooting both open division (that’s the race guns with red dots on them) and limited division.
Shannon is a National Champion in USPSA, a US Steel National Champion and Pro Am Champion. In addition he is a 8 time Florida State Champion, and finished 3rd in the world in 2008 and 12th this year.
He is a professional shooter and works as the match director at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, FL.
Before he ventured into competitive shooting, Shannon was in the Army in Special Operations as a Ranger. There he was involved in small unit tactics, firearms training and attended several major schools.
In this podcast we learn what it means to manage a match when shooting a competition. What you should shoot the match your NOT ready for. And, what’s more important to be a champion, skills or a mental game.

My guest this week is Aaron Cowan. Aaron served in the Army and National Guard as an infantryman. There he served as a rifleman and designated marksman in addition to learning small unit tactics and close quarter combat techniques. After his service, Aaron became a private security contractor where he protected convoys, worked on personal protection details and also provided security during natural disasters.
Aaron also advanced into the realm of law enforcement and swat officer on the federal level. He quickly became a trainer for his department and is a member of the National Tactical Officers Association as well as a member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors.
Despite his tactical background, Aaron is also versed in the sciences and a voracious reader. He credits his upbringing that taught him how to always be reading and writing which translates into Aaron being outspoken with his ideas.
Aaron is the lead instructor for Sage Dynamics, a training company he founded that teaches civilians and law enforcement weapons proficiency and tactics. Aaron also writes a blog which became a Youtube channel where he post regularly.
Aaron recently published a white paper on the use of Red Dot Sights on pistols which quickly spread across the internet. To date, this document is one of the most thorough researched studies on red dot sights, which are the future of sighting for handguns.
On this podcast we find out why putting a red dot sight on your handgun will greatly enhance your shooting abilities. How using a 3 dimensional target can help your practice program. And finally, by solving the “why” in your shooting will better prepare you for an actual gunfight.

My guest this week is Caleb Giddings. Most people first met Caleb when he was a contestant on the first season of the History Channel’s Top Shot series. Before he was on the show, Caleb served in the Coast Guard and was a competitor in a variety of competitive shooting sports. He is a Five Division Master in IDPA and also competes in USPSA and NRA Action Pistol.
After Top Shot, Caleb was part of Gun Nuts Media and worked in all forms of media for them. He was a host on the Powerfactor Show podcast and More recently Caleb went back to the military and signed up as a reservist with the Air Force as a combat arms instructor, which is a perfect fit considering his background. Caleb has some serious opinions on guns and gun ownership which he shares on his blog and YouTube channel. He challenges the often phony or ridiculous claims perpetrated by internet commandos. These challenges routinely lead to heated debates but Caleb stands by his opinions.
On this podcast we get into: what it was like to be on a top television show where you are not only tested on your shooting skills but also have to deal with the pressures of a dramatic reality show. Also why carrying a round in the chamber of your handgun is a good idea and finally, what is the best plan of action when dealing with survival after a major natural disaster.

My guest this week is former Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan. Shawn served in both Iraq and Afghanistan on SEAL Teams 2 and 8. Once he finished his deployments he left the Navy and took a contractor position working for the CIA overseas.
Shawn has 14 years of combat experience and fighting terrorism. While deployed he also help protect our athletes during the Olympics in Greece and developed a skill set to branch out on his own when he returned to the United States. Shawn started his own training company Vigilance Elite where he not only teaches rifle and handgun shooting classes but also some tactics for survival to law enforcement and civilians.
Shawn also is an Outreach Consultant for Veterans Advocacy Services, a organization that helps and supports Special Operations vets.

My guest this week is special forces veteran and firearms instructor Aaron Barruga. After serving in Iraq and Afghanistan Aaron branched out to form his own training company, Guerrilla Approach. He wants students to push themselves out of their comfort zone because that’s where the real learning begins.
Aaron also has made a name for himself publicly questioning current training techniques and norms that have been propagated specifically on the internet. These challenges of course have rustled a bunch of feathers but the truths he professes are only beneficial to all shooters.

Mike Hughes is a force to reckon with. He played college football before he went on to become a patent attorney. Along the way he got into pistol competitions and soon developed a dry fire tool called the Shot Indicating Resetting Trigger Training Pistol or SIRT pistol for short. This tool is basically allowing people to dry practice with a trigger that can be adjusted and has two different color lasers coming out of it. One red as the finger gets on the trigger and the other green as the shot breaks. It is a great diagnostic tool for instructors as well. The SIRT pistol comes both in a Glock and Smith and Wesson M&P styles and when I caught up with Mike at this years SHOT Show, he was proud to announce a Pocket Pistol form factor. This allows the EDC crowd to get their reps in as well.

Tim Kennedy is the closest thing we have to a real Captain America. For those of you in a cave and don’t know who he is, Tim is an active duty Green Beret sniper. Before he was a sniper, he was a door kicker in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. After 9/11 he was so committed that he signed up for a program that has a pipeline directly into the Green Berets..as long as you passed some of the hardest selections the military has.
In addition to being an all around warrior, he has time to compete in this little organization called the UFC or Ultimate Fighting Championship. As a middleweight fighter he is currently ranked 13th. So did I until I did the research and learned that the facts don’t add up and we were told a lie. And now the History Channel is producing an awesome show called Hunting Hitler where the past two seasons Tim and company go down to S. America to find the truth. The 3rd season is set to air this fall.

Wayne Black has provided security protection details for several high powered clients including the former Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld and Pamela Geller who was the target of the first ISIS attack in the US. Wayne also worked Narcotics in Miami in the 80s during the Cocaine Cowboys era living Miami Vice. Yong Lee has been a law enforcement officer for over 28 years and a firearms instructor for 25 of those years. He also is on the departments SWAT team for the past 11 years. In addition he is the departments Firearms Training Coordinator, Chief Firearms Instructor, and Use of Force instructor.
He is a Certified Analyst and instructor for the Force Science Institute who’s mission is to analyze countless shootings in law enforcement and are often called to testify in trials involving firearms and shootings.

My guest today is an attorney, an author, competitive shooter and tv guest host. Andrew Branca has been a lifelong shooter and reached master class in IDPA. Knowing that there was a lot of misinformation on being involved in a self-defense shooting, he focused his legal career to learn the subsection of criminal law the deals with use of force and defending your life. He quickly became a subject matter expert on the laws of self-defense and has been quoted in major newspapers and on nationally syndicated broadcast shows.
He recently became a guest host on the hit tv show on the Outdoor Channel, “The Best Defense”.
Andrew has written the go to book called “The Law of Self-Defense” which is in it’s 3rd edition and that is the name of his website.

Tim Herron is a grandmaster level shooter in USPSA and has won the Missouri State Championship 4 times in a row. He also has won his division (Single Stack) at 3 Area Championships. Time has been shooting since 2010 and struggled in B Class for many years until he learned how to practice.

Bennie Cooley is both a competitive shooter and tactical operator. Bennie has won numerous World and National 3 Gun championships. He not only competes in 3 Gun, but also in High Power which are those scoped bolt action rifles that shoot far distances. Bennie works full time on a SWAT team and as a firearms instructor. Tony Blauer has been teaching people to protect themselves for over 37 years. Matt Hopkins is a Grandmaster shooter in the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA). He has competed since he was a young boy when his father took him to the local bowling pin matches. Robert Vogel and Jessica Hook are quite the power couple. Robert (Bob) is a world champion competitive shooter. He competes in both USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) and IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association). Bob also shoots for Team USA in the IPSC World Shoot. Bob has won 3 world championships, 23 national championships and also had time to be a full time law enforcement officer in Ohio where he was a firearms instructor and SWAT operator.
Bob retired from law enforcement and competes full time as a professional shooter. He has made several videos on pistol shooting and now teaches across the world with his company Vogel Dynamics.
Several years ago he was introduced to Jessica Hook who was a game designer. Jessica met champion shooter Taran Butler and soon began shooting under his banner (Taran Tactical Innovations) along side an all female shooting team. TTI’s ladies team is not just pretty faces. They are constantly winning titles from pistol competition to 3 Gun.
It was interesting to get to know both Bob and Jessica as they both work in the shooting world. It’s hard to maintain a relationship with the demands of competition and training, plus the extra attention Jessica gets as a female shooter.

Bruce Gray is a master level gunsmith, competitive shooter and reserve deputy sheriff. He has worked in the firearms world for over 40 years. Bruce is known as the guy who makes your SigSauer pistol sing, in fact he just released a new trigger for the highly successful striker fired Sig P320 (which just won the new Army pistol contract).

Mike Foley is the president of the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA). He was elected a year ago and since then the membership has gone up and he has introduced a new division, Pistol Caliber Carbine, into competition. Mike has also taken on several major issues including having a Spring Nationals (the Optic Nationals going on the weekend of 3/25/17) and possible explosion from the International Pistol Shooting Confederation (IPSC) which governs the 2017 World Shoot in France.
Mike has a background in competitive shooting and worked for a company that sold shooting related products for many years. Mike talks about how to get new shooters into the sport, how to keep and maintain a solid Ladies division and will US competitors be arrested in France if they show up with their firearms for the World Shoot.

In the first episode of the Firearms Nation Podcast I talk with 3 Gun Nation competitor Keith Garcia and we talk about guns in California, shooting PCC and surfing.
I learned that Keith has been a California police officer for over 20 years. He has run the gamut of various positions in the department but is know for being on the SWAT team as it's leader.
Keith started competing in 2004 in local police matches and then USPSA but once he tried shooting 3-Gun, his life changed forever.
Keith won the first ever "3 Gun Nation" shoot-off at SMM3G in 2010 and in 2011. He also had his first major match victory at the first "Pro Series" match in St. Augustine Florida. Keith also won the 3 Gun National Championship in 2013.
