The Rockies’ collapse in the National League Division Series was shocking – their pitching was up to the task, but their bats simply vanished without a trace as they were swept away by the Brewers and were shut out in their final two games.
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, “Mornings at 5280′“) and guest Ronnie Kohrt (Host, "The Broncos Blitz" podcast) discuss why the Rockies’ offense was so dysfunctional and explained how they fundamentally misunderstood what kind of approach at the plate is needed in Major League Baseball’s tightly contested postseason.
All isn’t lost for the Rockies, however. Despite the disappointing finish, it’s hard to see the team’s season as anything less than a resounding success – and with a young and talented rotation, the future already looks bright.

The Colorado Rockies advanced past the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card game and find themselves in the Nation al Division Series against the top-seeded Brewers, and while it’s hard to complain about the success, Blake Street Irregulars podcast host Shawn Drotar (Mornings at 5280′) finds himself feeling like he’s been shouting into a hurricane all season regarding the Rockies’ offensive issues.
The team’s approach at the plate often defies logic, and now that they’re in the postseason – where runs are already at a premium – the Rockies’ "rip it and grip it" style is killing the team’s momentum at the plate, and on the scoreboard.
Following their 10-inning, 3-2 loss to the Brewers in NLDS Game 1 – where they had only one hit in the first eight innings, despite facing only relievers on a day where the Brewers put a pot luck of pitchers on the mound – the Rockies’ offensive numbers have became a horror show more fit for Halloween than the playoffs.
To wit:
The Rockies have scored only four runs in 23 postseason innings, equal to a meager 1.6 runs per nine innings
In those games, the Rockies are batting an abysmal .188 (15-for-80) with only five walks and a whopping 25 strikeouts (31.3 percent)
With runners in scoring position, the Rockies are hitting .133 (2-for-15) and have left a whopping 14 runners on base
For the Rockies to advance in the postseason, they’ll have to do better – pronto.

With only three games left to play, the Colorado Rockies hold a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and a similar lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the wild-card race after the most one-sided sweep in their history – a four-gamer over the Philadelphia Phillies that saw the Rockies outscore the Phils by a whopping 32 runs.
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, “Mornings at 5280′“) and guest Doug Ottewill (Editor-in-Chief, Mile High Sports Magazine) take a look at the Rockies’ seven-game winning streak and wonder if it will have to reach 10 in order for the Rockies to claim the first division title in their history.
Between outfielder David Dahl’s four homers in four consecutive games, to shortstop Trevor Story’s 470-foot bomb in the series finale, to German Marquez’s 70-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ration in his last seven starts, the Rockies are rolling – and their best pitcher, Kyle Freeland, will start the first game of the decisive home series.
What do the Rockies need to do to ensure a series win – and what would a division title mean to the franchise as a whole? Shawn and Doug discuss all of these topics and more in the latest episode of the “Blake Street Irregulars”!

The Rockies began their final week of the season at home; dominating the visiting Philadelphia Phillies behind a strong outing by Jon Gray. If the team intends too make the postseason for the second year in a row, however, that win will have to be only a taste of what’s to come in the season’s final six games at Coors Field as the Phillies and Washington Nationals play out the string against a desperate Colorado squad.
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, “Mornings at 5280′“) and guest Ronnie Kohrt (Host, "The Broncos Blitz" podcast) discuss what the Rockies have to do in order to finish the season strong. They no longer control their destiny, but the St. Louis Cardinals – who hold the final wild-card spot at present – have a much more difficult schedule in the final week.
The NL West title’s still in play, but hopes are fading fast. Do the Rockies need to win four, five. or even (gulp) all six remaining games in order to make the playoffs? Would that even be enough? The Colorado Rockies’ inaugural season was in 1993 – and they’ve never won their division.
Starting on Monday, a pivotal series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine will go a long way towards deciding if the Rockies capture their first NL West crown... or make the postseason at all.
The Rockies hold a narrow, half-game lead over the home Dodgers, who will send Hyun-Jin Ryu, Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler to the mound, respectively. The Rockies with counter with Jon Gray. Kyle Freeland and Tyler Anderson, with each game possibly deciding not only who will lead the division, but possibly build on that lead, to boot.
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, “Mornings at 5280′“) and guest Ronnie Kohrt (Host, "The Broncos Blitz" podcast) talk about the significance of the three-game series – the Rockies have never been in first place this late in the season – and whether the wild-card race (The Rockies lead the Cardinals for the second wild-card spot by only percentage points) is worth paying attention to at all.

As the season winds down, the MVP race heats up -- and Rockies shortstop Trevor Story has put himself into the thick of it with record-setting home runs, top-notch defensive plays and a home-road split that defies Coors Field's critics.
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, “Mornings at 5280′“) and guest Doug Ottewill (Editor-in-Chief, Mile High Sports Magazine) wonder if Story has been even more valuable than Nolan Arenado, the Rockies' peerless third baseman, over the course of the season. As crazy as that sounds on the surface, a deeper look at the numbers shows that it's closer than one might think.
If the Rockies can win the NL West -- and if critics would consider removing the Coors Field penalty from every Rockies hitter, ever -- could their quickly maturing shortstop go from curiosity to MVP in only one season?

While the Colorado Rockies have launched themselves into contention, they underwhelmed against the Cardinals in a three-game set over the weekend; something they can't afford to do many more times.
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, "Mornings at 5280'") and guest Doug Ottewill (Editor-in-Chief, Mile High Sports Magazine) discuss Bud Black's decision to go with a "Sunday lineup" against the Cardinals; including a rest-day for All-Star Charlie Blackmon during a critical game and series and explain why the Rockies can't afford to do that again.
The Rockies aren't the Yankees; they're not in this position every year, and with the looming specter of Nolan Arenado's impending free agency following the 2019 season hovering over their heads, Bud Black and Co. can't afford to do anything but put the pedal to the metal the rest of the way.
The team now hits the road for a critical, six-game road trip to Anaheim and San Diego, and starting pitcher Tyler Anderson's game is a mess of late. Can the Rockies pick up the slack until Anderson gets his mojo back?

The Colorado Rockies have seven of their last nine games, and have had a disastrous homestead – with three games remaining against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, "Mornings at 5280'") and guest Eric Goodman (Host, "Afternoon Drive with Goodman and Shapiro") talk about the Rockies' free-fall, and especially how the baffling, awful performances out of the bullpen have doomed the Rockies in far too many games this season.
The expensive, underperforming bullpen might eventually sink their season, too.
The pair talk about how Wade Davis’ blown saves and Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee’ disappointing seasons affect morale on a team that’s struggling to stay in the NL West race, and discuss how critical the final three games of the homestand are – especially since the Rockies will travel to Houston and Atlanta next.

The Colorado Rockies won their fifth straight home game on Monday with a shutout of the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates behind another sterling effort from starting pitcher Kyle Freeland.
Freeland spun seven scoreless innings and allowed only two hits, despite having to cool off thanks to a rain delay. His 10 wins lead the team, and his 3.04 ERA is leaps and bounds better than anyone else in the Rockies' rotation.
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, "Mornings at 5280'") and guest Ronnie Kohrt (Mile High Sports' "Broncos Blitz" podcast) discuss what makes an 'ace' nowadays, as complete games become a rarity in the majors. Is Freeland the Rockies' ace?
Could it be Jon Gray, who's clearly righted the ship since his return from Triple-A Albuquerque? Gray's nine wins are tied for the second-best total on the team, and his 10.65 K/9 demonstrates what he can do to opposing batters when he's right. In his last four games since his promotion, Gray's 2-0 with a miniscule 1.52 ERA and 25 strikeouts -- and the Rockies are 4-0 in his starts.
Freeland or Gray? Who would you pitch in a one-game wild-card?

As the scorching-hot Rockies return to Coors Field, they'll face the ultimate test; the World Series-defending Houston Astros and starting pitchers (Gerrit Cole and Charlie Morton), that sport a combined 21-4 record.
The Rockies, winners of 15 of their last 19, however, look to be ready to start a five-game homestand against that Astros and Oakland A's that will redefine their playoff chances, and perhaps define their entire season.
Host Shawn Drotar and guest Nate Lundy (Co-hosts, "Mornings at 5280'") take a look at the Rockies as they take on two of the American League's finest, and discuss how a successful -- or unsuccessful -- homestand will change the team's trade-deadline goals, and how they'll continue to fight for a second postseason berth in a row.

The Rockies have won 13 of their last 16 games, rocketing into the All-Star break with big-time momentum. While most teams look at the break as a time to rest and refresh themselves, the Rockies -- who are playing their best baseball of the season -- might feel differently.

The Colorado Rockies, winners of six out their last seven games, find themselves only 3-1/2 games out of first place in the NL West – but facing a tough, nine-game stretch that may end up defining their season.

The Rockies’ pitching is rounding into form behind Kyle Freeland, Tyler Anderson and newly promoted Antonio Senzatela, all of whom have contributed mightily to the Rockies’ run of success, but it’s shortstop Trevor Story who’s been the revelation; cutting back on strikeouts and hitting nearly .400 over the past two weeks – all while playing Gold Glove-caliber defense.

Host Shawn Drotar and guest Nate Lundy (Co-hosts, "Mornings at 5280'") debate who's responsible: the players? Manager Bud Black? GM Jeff Bridich? The truth is that it's a combination of all three -- which makes the growing problem all the more difficult to fix.
The Rockies are set to hit the road, facing NL West rivals San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles in three of baseball's best pitchers' parks. Is that a recipe for disaster? Check out the latest "Blake Street Irregulars"!

The Rockies return to Coors Field as winners of their last five road games -- or as many as they've won at home all season.
They'll hope to remedy that against the Angels and Brewers, tough opponents that will require quality starts and more than a few runs.
Rockies starter Jon Gray has put up the best back-to-back starts of his career; has he turned the corner, or will Denver's high altitude stifle his game?
Host Shawn Drotar (Host, "Mornings at 5280'") and guest Doug Ottewill (Editor-in-Chief, Mile High Sports Magazine) discuss how the Rockies' pitching staff has matured -- and how it won't matter unless the Rockies' bats heat up soon.

After a disastrous series in Miami that saw the offense go AWOL against the Marlins, the Rockies have the National League's worst batting average (.221) while leading the circuit in home runs (37).
With most of the lineup hitting under .240 and averaging nearly 10 strikeouts per game, the Rockies' inability to string hits together keeps them from putting up crooked numbers when they need them most.
Host Shawn Drotar (Mile High Sports Radio) and guest Erik Trujillo (Mile High Sports Magazine) discuss how long they'll willing to wait on the bats to heat up -- and explain how it's taxing an already overused bullpen.

The Rockies finally got an off day Thursday after playing 17 days in a row, including 11 of those on the road. A stretch that started in San Diego, traveled through Denver and ended on the East Coast saw the Rox go 10-7 overall, including an impressive 8-3 on the road. Casey Light doesn't take rest days, though, and uses the Rockies off day to recount all 17 games, including a nod to the top performers and a plea to step up to a couple players.
The Rockies took three of four games from the Nationals over the weekend, but some troubling trends continue. Trevor Story remains one of the NL leaders in strikeouts and is hitting just .177 on the season. The starting pitchers, Tyler Anderson in particular, are still issuing far too many walks and taxing the bullpen as a result. Still, the Rockies are above .500 as they head into a road series with red-hot Pittsburgh. Casey Light and Renaud Notaro discuss all that, plus some Nolan Ryan and Bartolo Colon comparisons, in this edition of Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
The Rockies sit at 6-7 through their first 13 games, a disappointing start by some standards. The 2-4 opening homestand didn't help, but the fact that only one team in the N.L. West has a winning record provides some relief. Casey Light and Jake Meier look at the high and lows of the first 13 games, including surprising performances and who needs to step up moving forward. Plus, a preview of the pitching matchups as the Rockies head to Washington for a big four-game series with the Nationals. It's all in this edition of the Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
The Rockies kicked off the 2018 home slate with the second-coldest game in Coors Field history. The bats were almost as cold this weekend, scoring just 6 runs against the Braves. Casey Light and Ronnie K look back at the Atlanta series, then preview the upcoming three-game set with San Diego. That, plus a close look at new closer Wade Davis through his first five appearances, in this edition of Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
The Rockies announced on Wednesday that they have signed Charlie Blackmon to a six-year contract (with two player options) that could keep him in Colorado through 2023. Reports put the contract value at up to $116 million dollars. Casey Light and Aniello Piro offer their instant reaction to the news, including a look into the future of the Rockies' payroll and how this signing could impact Nolan Arenado's impending free agency. That and more in this edition of the Blake Street Irregulars podcast presented by Tap XIV.
The Colorado Rockies went 1-2 in their season-opening series in Arizona. The starting pitchers gave out too many free passes. Trevor Story remains a strikeout machine (while Adam Ottavino appears back to being one). And the Rockies scored all but one of their runs in the series via the home run. Casey Light examines how the three true outcomes (walks, strikeouts and home runs) dictated the series and what needs to change against San Diego. That and more are inside this edition of Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
After months of waiting for baseball's return, it's no surprise that the internet was rife with overreaction on Opening Day. That certainly held true for Rockies fans, who saw their team fall 8-2 to the D-Backs. Among the overreactions: Get DJ LeMahieu out of the No. 2 spot... Chris Rusin will win the Cy Young... Chris Rusin is a bum... Nolan Arenado will hit 162 home runs... Jon Gray can't pitch... The Rockies are toast... and so many more.
Casey Light and Aniello Piro try to separate the real concerns from the overreactions in this edition of the Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
Through no fault of his own over the past year, Ian Desmond has been on a bit of a yo-yo in terms of what his role is with the Rockies. He'll start at first base on Opening Day, but this season could see him play all over the field and bat all over the lineup. Aniello Piro joins Casey Light to to talk about his conversations with Desmond this spring and how consistency is the key to a bounce-back year for the two-time All-Star.
The Rockies are celebrating their 25th anniversary this season, and fans would be ecstatic if that celebration culminated with the first division title in franchise history. To honor the #Rockies25th, Casey Light explores the 25 key stats that would help deliver NL West crown No. 1. It's a special extended edition of the Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
The cover story in Mile High Sports Magazine's April edition explores how the Rockies have become a team built "From the Mound Up." Editor-in-Chief Doug Ottewill, who penned the cover story, joins Casey Light to preview the issue and offer a behind-the-scenes look at his conversations with Rockies GM Jeff Bridich, Pitching Coach Steve Foster, Bullpen Coach Darren Holmes and Manager Bud Black. That, plus in-depth talk about the makeup of Colorado's pitching staff, can be found in this edition of Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
We're always told not to read too much into Spring Training stats, but some players who are expected to be major contributors in 2018 are having a rocky go of it so far. Ronnie K was down in Arizona last week. He joins Casey Light to break down which Rockies with ugly spring numbers are cause for concern, and which ones will be just fine come Opening Day. That, plus Bud Black's roster continues to become more clear. It's all in this edition of the Blake Street Irregulars podcast presented by Tap XIV.
The Rockies open regular season play in two weeks. Jon Gray is pegged as the No. 1 starter in the rotation. How will spots 2 through 5 shake out? And how much will performances in Spring Training influence Bud Black's decision?
Casey Light and Aniello Piro set their rotations, plus look at key injuries that could impact the Opening Day roster. And what the heck is wrong with Ian Desmond's swing? All that and more in the latest Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
Carlos Gonzalez has officially re-signed with the Colorado Rockies on a one-year contract that both sides hope will pay big dividends. (Gonzalez with equity towards a long-term deal next offseason, the Rockies with a reliable right fielder and clubhouse leader who can help deliver another postseason run).
Casey Light and Renaud Notaro explore why the signing took so long, what to expect from Gonzalez in 2018 and what effect his return will have on the starting lineup and the 25-man roster. It's all about CarGo in this edition of the Blake Street Irregulars presented by Tap XIV.
Bud Black seems set on moving Charlie Blackmon out of the leadoff spot. Should we be concerned with his potential replacement's slow start to Cactus League play? Is it a case of "If it ain't broke, why fix it?" Speaking of broke, Nolan Arenado recently said he doesn't want to negotiate a contract extension in 2018. Is that a sign he's going to eventually break the bank in Denver? Casey Light and Coach Les discuss all of that, plus why the Rockies aren't getting respect locally or nationally.
Mile High Sports Magazine Editor-in-Chief Doug Ottewill was in Scottsdale last week in preparation for the 2018 Rockies Preview edition. Colorado has suddenly become a pitching-minded organization. Doug and Casey Light dive into how that transformation occurred and how it will shape the 2018 season. Plus, Doug explains why you don't want to interrupt Wade Davis' sudoku.
It's Dr. Seuss' birthday!
In this edition of the Blake Street Irregulars podcast presented by Tap XIV, Casey Light and David Johnson look at "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" the Rockies can do right now to help meet expectations for 2018 that seem to be getting bigger every day.
The starting 8 and the bullpen seem set, indeed.
So, let's add a starter and address a bench need!
Charlie Blackmon makes his 2018 Spring Training debut, and he'll be hitting third in the lineup. Is Rockies manager Bud Black serious about moving Blackmon out of the leadoff spot? If so, what ramifications does that have for the rest of the lineup? Casey Light and Benny Bash explore the possibilities in this edition of the Blake Street Irregulars podcast presented by Tap XIV.
The Rockies open Cactus League play on Friday and expectations are as high as they have ever been for the club. Casey Light and Aniello Piro take a look at every position on the diamond and gauge whether or not the different bodies at that position can meet the expectations set in 2017 with a run to the playoffs. It's an extra-large, extended edition of the podcast, so settle in and get ready for some baseball!
Position players report to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on Monday, but much of the chatter is about who is not there. Carlos Gonzalez and Mark Reynolds remain free agents, while the Rockies have put a top prospect atop the depth chart at first base. Casey Light and Benny Bash examine what message that sends to CarGo and Reynolds, not to mention stars like Nolan Arenado. That, plus what to expect from top prospect Brendan Rodgers, is all in this edition of the Blake Street Irregulars podcast presented by Tap XIV.
Pitchers and catchers are in Arizona, officially in uniform with coaches on hand! For the first time in what feels like Rockies history, the club has a plethora of plus-side arms to choose from in the bullpen. Casey Light and Doug Ottewill break down the eight bullpen spots Bud Black is likely to deploy to start the season, plus they examine how the abundance of available starters might impact bullpen roles.
Love is in the air this Feb. 14, and not just because it's Valentine's Day. Rockies pitchers and catchers have their first workout of the year, and expectations are sky-high this season. Casey Light and Benny Bash take a look at the seven starters who contributed significantly to last year's 87-win season and size up which of those will comprise Bud Black's Opening Day rotation.
Rockies pitchers and catchers report today, with their first workout scheduled for Wednesday. Casey Light and Shawn Drotar examine the four catchers on the 40-man roster and look at moves Colorado could still make to shore up the position.
As the Colorado Rockies' offseason begins in earnest, host Shawn Drotar and guest Casey Light discuss the addition of Bryan Shaw to the bullpen and the return of reliever Jake McGee. While rumors still swirl around the Rockies and their pursuit of closers Wade Davis, Brandon Kintzler, Alex Colome and even the potential return of Greg Holland, the pair dig deep into the Rockies' staff and find a number of intriguing possibilities for a young rotation and a veteran bullpen.
Though the Rockies signed old friend Chris Iannetta to a free-agent deal, the Rockies still have question marks at catcher, first base and right field. Can Ian Desmond truly take over at first -- the role he was signed to play -- or will the Rockies need to mix and match with Gerardo Parra?
Lastly, Shawn and Casey take a look at the Rockies' financial situation; with arbitration due to Charlie Blackmon and DJ LeMahieu, the possibility of signing superstar Nolan Arenado to a long-term contract get more complicated -- could the Rockies entertain moving one the three?

Longtime Minnesota Twins scout Ed Henderson joins host Shawn Drotar (Mile High Sports Radio) to reminiscence on the life and times of Roy Halladay -- one of the greatest athletes in Colorado history.
Henderson scouted Halladay as a youth; following the man and his career from Arvada West High School to a legendary major-league career. From talking about Halladay's throwback mindset, to funny anecdotes to his Hall of Fame chances, Henderson's tales provide an intimate portrait of the beloved pitcher, lost far too soon in a tragic plane crash.

The #Rockies have clinched their first postseason appearance since 2009, but it'll be a very brief one if they can't get past the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Host Shawn Drotar and guest Casey Light break the game down; first looking closely at the starting pitching matchup -- Colorado's Jon Gray vs. Arizona's Zach Greinke -- while comparing and contrasting the way each man is expected to attack the other's batting order. The Rockies, with a pair of MVP candidates in Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado, are loaded with power throughout the lineup and have boom-or-bust potential, while the Diamondbacks sport a pair of the league's best hitters in Paul Goldschmidt and mid-season acquisition J.D. Martinez.
Light, a former collegiate pitcher, talks about Gray's mindset prior to his first-ever postseason start, and the pair decide whether the Rockies' most-expensive free-agent acquisition -- 1B/LF Ian Desmond -- should even start this important winner-take-all battle.
Win or lose, the Rockies finally appear to have turned a corner for their franchise... but winning it would mean even more. Scout out the game with the "Blake Street Irregulars".

It's been eight years since the Colorado Rockies were in this position. The postseason is in finally in sight, and this time, the boys in purple don't need anybody's help.
The Rockies haven't made it easy on themselves for much of this season, and the final weekend won't be any different. The mighty Los Angeles Dodgers are in town, and they won't roll over -- with the best record in baseball, the Dodgers want to hit the postseason in full stride.
Hosts Shawn Drotar & T.J. Carpenter (Mile High Sports Radio) discuss the Rockies' matchup with the Dodgers; the nature of an offense that alternately looks explosive and punchless, how MVP candidates Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado need to lead the way -- and what Carlos Gonzalez could accomplish in his potential swan song in Colorado.

We're down to the final dozen games of the regular-season, and the #Rockies' two-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers seems perilous -- but is it, really?
The Rockies start this stretch run with six on the road against the Giants and Padres -- two teams that have been planning tee times for a month -- while the Brewers' schedule looks much harder on paper.
They don't play the game on paper, though, and fortunately, the Rockies' best players have been playing like it in September -- especially Carlos Gonzalez.
Hosts Shawn Drotar (Mile High Sports Radio) and Ryan Greene (5280 Sports Network) do the playoff math and figure that an 8-4 finishing kick would get the job done for the Rockies. Even a 7-5 one might be enough, but the Rockies could build confidence for the postseason by taking care of business themselves. Can they do it?

The #Rockies swept the Dodgers in the first four game of their road trip, and came into the Arizona desert red-hot, beating the Diamondbacks in their series opener and looked to be primed for a run at the top wild-card spot.
In the final two games of the series, however, the Rockies' German Marquez and Chad Bettis imploded on the mound, which -- if that wasn't bad enough -- was compounded by the entire offense going AWOL to boot.
Now, the Rockies limp back to Coors Field, where a weekend set with the Padres looms; can the purple and black get their mojo back at a mile high?

Raise your hand if you picked the #Rockies to sweep the Dodgers... in a four-game series... in Los Angeles.
Now, put your hand down -- because you didn't. No one did.
The Rockies did so anyway, beating Clayton Kershaw, Yu Darvish and Alex Wood in the process; better plate discipline led to good power production, and solid relief pitching sealed the deal.
Nevertheless, the Rockies didn't put any space between them and the Brewers or Cardinals; teams in hot pursuit of the final wild-card spot.

As the #Rockies' struggles in August have made the wild-card chase more interesting than they hoped for, hosts Shawn Drotar (Mile High Sports Radio) and Ryan Greene (5280 Sports Network) discuss the ascension of Germán Márquez.
The rookie fireballer struck out 10 Tigers and walked only one in his last outing, causing catcher Jonathan Lucroy to remark that the 22-year-old Márquez is the best pitcher he's ever caught at that age.
But while Márquez has become the Rockies' best pitcher, closer Greg Holland's once-phenomenal season has become problematic. Since injuring his finger in a kitchen accident, Holland only has three saves -- and three blown saves -- in August, while sporting an unsightly 13.50 ERA.
Shawn and Ryan suggest a possible solution -- one that wouldn't disrupt team chemistry -- but can the team afford to try it?

For the first time in... ever (?), the Rockies' starting five of Jon Gray, Chad Bettis, Kyle Freeland, German Marquez and Jeff Hoffman looks all but set in stone, both for now, and for the foreseeable future.
Now, if the club could just get their bats working at the same time.
“We haven’t bunched hits together,” Bud Black told The Denver Post after their loss to the Braves on August 15 . “Some guys are getting hits, but they’re not coming in the same inning. To score runs, you have to get two or three hits in a inning. And we’re getting a hit here and a hit there. We’re just not getting the one big hit when we have some baserunners. Those guys who are getting hits aren’t doing it at the same time. We’re spreading it out.”

Host Shawn Drotar (Mile High Sports Radio) and guest Ronnie Kohrt (Mile High Sports) take a look at the recent, promising turnaround by Carlos Gonzalez, who has struggled mightily all season long at the plate. If Gonzalez -- and pitcher Chad Bettis, a 14-game winner last season, now making a miraculous recovery from cancer in Triple-A Albuquerque -- could both return to form in the next few weeks, it would be as if the #Rockies added a pair of high-end players at the looming trade deadline.

SPOILER ALERT: No. They are not.
That didn't stop ESPN's Tony Kornheiser from calling the 46-26, National League-leading Rockies exactly that on Monday. As part of a segment on "Pardon the Interruption", Kornheiser tore into the team, saying, "Ever since I saw them in the 2007 World Series, when they went down four-love to Boston, I have this prejudice against them. That they're a fraud team — they're a fraud team propped up by altitude."
Host Shawn Drotar and guest Ronnie Kohrt dissect the lazy argument -- even though they understand why the usually-excellent Kornheiser felt the way he did. After all, the Rockies haven't had a winning season since 2010.

Host Shawn Drotar (Mile High Sports Radio) and guest Ronnie Kohrt (Mile High Sports) take a look at the #Rockies after they lost their first road series of the season the Pittsburgh Pirates -- immediately after they took three of four from the defending champion Cubs in Wrigley Field.
Shawn explains why he predicted in May that the Rockies' trio of young starters -- Antonio Senzatela, Kyle Freeland and German Marquez -- would struggle at this point in the season, and expects that to continue during the team's multi-week string of games against NL West rivals.
In the meantime, the two express concern regarding the mentality of the team's younger players, following the Pittsburgh series; knowing that manager Bud Black's ability to help his charges navigate the peaks and valleys of a 162-game season is critical to the Rockies' success.

Host Shawn Drotar and weekly guest Ronnie Kohrt take a look at the Rockies' bounce-back trip to San Diego, and discuss when should be a change in the Rockies' rotation.
Jeff Hoffman, the centerpiece of the Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki trade, has started three games this season. He's won three games this season. In his last two starts (and wins), Hoffman's allowed only a single run in each, all while striking out 16 batters in 14 innings, and walking... none.
At this point, it would be unconscionable to send Hoffman back to the minors, so Ronnie and Shawn envision their ideal Rockies' rotation -- with and without the soon-to-return Jon Gray.

Chatwood, 3-6 on the season in large part to significant control issues, hasn't been able to limit walks, or the damage that often springs from them.
As Tyler Anderson seems to be almost over his early-season struggles, and with Jeff Hoffman -- making his second start of the season in Philly following an impressive win over the Dodgers at Coors Field -- coming on quickly, is Chatwood's spot in the rotation at risk? Will it be in a few weeks, when ace Jon Gray returns to the mound?
Shawn and Doug break it down, while incredulous that they're discussing the possibility that the Rockies might have too many quality starting pitchers -- a new, unusual, and pleasant development for longtime fans.

Host Shawn Drotar (SB Nation Radio, Mile High Sports Radio) is joined by Mile High Sports' Ronnie Kohrt, as the Rockies wrap up a 10-game homestand that saw them retain their hold on first place in the NL West. Now, the team goes on the road for 10 more -- can the Rockies' veteran pitchers keep up with the rookies? Will the offense travel if they can't?
Tyler Chatwood and Tyler Anderson were expected to be stalwarts in the Rockies' rotation -- instead, they've been liabilities. Rookies Antonio Senzatela -- who's six wins has him tied for the lead in all of Major League Baseball -- Kyle Freeland, and German Marquez have been keeping the rotation afloat in the meantime.
As for the bats, Carlos Gonzalez's seems to finally be heating up, and it's looking like the Rockies will need it against the first-place Twins and surprising Reds.

Host Shawn Drotar (SB Nation Radio, Mile High Sports Radio) is joined by guest Doug Ottewill, editor-in-chief of Mile High Sports magazine as the first-place Rockies head into the season's second month.
The Rockies may be atop the NL West, have the Rookie of the Month for April (starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela) and the Reliever of the Month (closer Greg Holland), but it's last year's revelation -- shortstop Trevor Story -- that's most intriguing.
Batting only .160 with a whopping 45 percent of his at-bats ending with strikeouts, is Story a superstar-in-waiting, or did his hot start in 2016 mask deficiencies in his swing that may be too much to overcome?

As Shawn Drotar enjoys a much deserved vacation, Nate Lundy fills in as Ronnie Kohrt from Mile High Sports joins him to discuss the Rockies big three game sweep of the Giants over the weekend. Plus, did the Rockies catch a break against the Nationals? That and why Trevor Story's batting average is struggling on today's podcast, presented by Tap Fourteen.
Mile High Sports' Casey Light, who pitched in college, joins host Shawn Drotar to discuss how new Rockies manager Bud Black's long leash -- in comparison to former skipper Walt Weiss' quick hook -- can not only reduce wear and tear on the bullpen, but help build confidence in Colorado's young hurlers.
In the wake of Jon Gray's fractured foot, Black's experience and knowledge will be tested along with the Rockies' ever-younger rotation.
