We're back on the hunt to showcase some of the newest culinary offerings in Greater Victoria. In this episode, Joe reviews some of the newest spots in the region as well as two popular spots for a drink in the morning and at night, that are worth revisiting if you haven't gone lately.

In 1984, 24-year-old Mark Sutton became a bit of a household name on Vancouver Island when he decided to pursue a Guinness World Record for pole sitting. Perched on top of a pole at the corner of Herald and Store (near the Value Village today), Sutton spent 488 days living in a makeshift tree house. In this eye-opening discussion, Joe and Kyle learn about one family’s connection to the earliest days of Victoria. Fern Perkins’ ancestors were the first Métis family to call Victoria home. Her great, great, great, grandfather Charles Ross was friends with Sir James Douglas and helped build Fort Victoria for the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1843. In a surprising twist that Fern didn’t realize until later in life, her husband Mark also had ties to the early days of Victoria. Mark’s great great great grandfather was Peter Skene Ogden, the man Ogden Point is named after. In this episode we learn about Fern’s journey in discovering her Indigenous past. Island businessmen back in the early 1900’s thought it was a great idea but it wasn’t to be. In this episode we discuss the Beacon Hill Trust established in 1884 that lays out the rules for development in the park and explain why this wooden mammoth of a facility was never built.
In this episode, we discuss a 1960’s plan from a Vancouver company to build a Medieval Amusement Park in Saanich Gorge Park essentially turning it into Sherwood Forest. The proposal included a castle, a torture chamber, a dungeon, and Robin Hood figurines scattered throughout the facility. It also wanted to create two Viking longboats that would transport people from the inner harbor, up the Gorge, to the park. We sat down with local Author Dorothy Mindenhall to discuss the plan and learn why it never happened (We discuss the plan beginning at the 7:54 mark).
It's the definition of a local success story. In a small Victoria basement in 2016, Rob Fraser came up with the idea to create some fashionable, athletic socks. He made 200 pairs, put them in a large box, and then sold them (they went fast). Since then his company has sold millions of socks under the brand name "Endur" but yesterday that all changed. The City of Victoria is in the process of overhauling its noise bylaw. The bylaw hasn't really been touched in nearly two decades but council hasn't decided what will change. Should gas-powered leaf blowers be banned? Should the beeping noise large city vehicles make when they back up be eliminated? Should bylaw officers work later and on weekends to crack down on partiers making a racket in the early hours of the day? These are all questions that are on the table which we address in a conversation with Victoria Councillor Charlayne Thornton-Joe.

Kenny Warren thought the Queen of Victoria was going down. He was one of the passengers on board the BC Ferry heading for Swartz Bay in August of 1970 when it was hit by a Russian freighter in Active Pass and nearly sliced in two. It's August 5th, 1922. Hundreds of people are gathered on the shores of Victoria's Gorge Waterway watching in awe as a 19-year-old daredevil climbs a 34-metre dive tower. The diver is Billy Muir, and he's about to swan dive into the waterway, a jump that would eventually cost him his life.
