Luke Lawrence | White Noise Music

Luke Lawrence is the founder, co-producer and resident DJ of Melbourne-based events series, White Noise Music.

Having DJ’d for more than 10 years in clubs in and around Melbourne, Luke’s career in music began in mobile DJ’ing doing the hard yards at 21st birthdays, weddings and school formals. Years later and it’s not only electronic music, but also promotions and the events business Luke is most passionate about. Having partnered with Nina Paulus, the White Noise brand now brings monthly parties featuring national and international artists in clubs throughout the city.

As a DJ, Luke has become known for showcasing the sort of emotional, harder-edged melodic house and techno also played by the likes of Fideles, ARTBAT, Solomun and Adriatique.

In recent months, this experienced DJ has featured at festivals including Babylon, The Comfort Zone and Burning Seed. He’s no stranger to the boards at New Guernica, Brown Alley, MyAeon and Killing Time. Artists he’s supported have included Matt Sassari, Secret Cinema & Egbert, Budakid, Rafael Cerato and Animal Trainer.

White Noise Music’s PLAY series isn’t about ‘discovering new talent’ or ‘showcasing the masters of the craft’. It’s about celebrating the fellowship we’ve enjoyed with everyone who’s been to and played for a White Noise party. And especially for those who know how special they can be. What better way to do it, than by exhibiting the talent of DJ’s and producers that – in their soul, and in their music – embody the White Noise sound.

THE DJ

Canadian-born DJ/producer Samuel Jay’s DNA is interlaced with the percussion and vocals of dark house music. Recently having moved to Melbourne, Sam has brought an ecstatic shuffle to countless pairs of feet on the dance-floors of this city’s best venues - with no sign of letting up! Only now is this producer’s talent beginning to shine, with white-label house tracks bursting onto SoundCloud, so the invitation to join the White Noise crew in April this year was natural selection at its best.

There is magic in the essence of house music, and Samuel Jay celebrates it with this mix. Zip up your slacks and lace up the loafers, you’re in for a treat with this one.

THE MIX

With the rhythm and tempo of a soul train on its way to Sin City in the middle of the night, Samuel Jay’s entry into our PLAY series pays homage to house music. The dark landscape curated here grows progressively in energy towards countless dance-floor crescendos, and breaks itself back down to a simmering chug to re-charge the sound's electricity.

Appropriate for a midnight slot, or even as early as 5am the mix features moments of classic house magic as well as dark, percussive gems that defy genre. Harry Romero’s jumped up “La Brava” introduces the mix and features delay-soaked big room percussion, immediately signalling the temperature of our journey. At 27:33, Emanuel Satie’s “Soso” reveals a pulsing synth and vocal cut that recalls Heart’s 70’s rock anthem, “Barracuda”... from here on, it’s business time.
