In this divisive political season, what does Scripture tell us about engaging in politics? In this first part of three, we look at Titus 3:1-8 and find religion and politics really do go together. We are called to Be Political WITHOUT Being a Jerk.
On this Labor Day weekend, we celebrate a Labor of Love that is normally not celebrated. But, we find that without it there is chaos, fracture, and many other unintended consequences. Jeremiah 18:1-11 give a picture of something our culture has become confused about. Through combining this "labor of love" with other biblical terms and twisting those to other meanings, we have lost one of the most needed gifts of love we can seek out from God and from fellow Christians: judgment. Not condemnation or punishment, but that "watching over another in love" that we need to see the wrong things in us and our society that we are often blind to.
Meeting Jesus doesn't end with meeting Jesus, but is carried on into sharing that experience with others. We see this done in two ways by the woman at the well (John 4:27-30, 39-42) - 1) Investing and 2) Inviting. A discovery is not complete until it is shared. A story is not a story until it is told. What if one day, a friend, a child, a co-worker began to tell their story and your name was a part of it? That would be a great joy!
There are three movements of the spirit that happen when we meet Jesus that are common across every context. Let's celebrate and thank Jesus for revealing himself to us and prompting these movements!
