March in New Brunswick is all about one thing – maple syrup. The sap is running, the sugar shacks are open, and the pancakes are stacking up. But behind all the yummy fun we civilians enjoy, there’s some serious business at play – and some serious science, too!

Heather Fraser spent 30 years working for the City of Moncton, including launching the city’s maple syrup production, the first municipally-operated sugar bush in Canada. Since retiring from that position, she’s launched her own business, Explore Nature’s Bounty, which works to connect people with the world around us all year round.

But her passion for maple syrup couldn’t be stopped. She joins us on the podcast to share a snippet of what you’ll learn if you join her on a guided tour this season.

This episode originally aired in Season Five, but we think it deserves a replay this maple sugar season! Find a maple camp to visit with our annual Guide to Maple Sugar Camps near Moncton!

It's always a privilege when someone feels comfortable enough to open up in our studio. We've welcomed Tammy Rampersaud to the show before, sharing about her life in politics and work with community groups such as the Courage Centre. But this discussion is much more personal, highlighting her decision to share her personal journey as a childhood abuse victim through writing. She's published two beautiful books for young audiences, and shares plans for a memoir to come.

  • My Body, My Rules is written for young children, with beautiful illustrations and a gentle pace and message of body autonomy and setting boundaries.
  • The Line I Draw is written for older children, particularly tweens and teens grappling with childhood trauma. It's a story of finding your own voice and building strength.

Tune in to hear Tammy share how these books are helping her and her family, and her hopes for the impact they will have for other children facing difficult, unsafe situations.

Connection is one of the most powerful gifts we can give a child - and ourselves. Many people theorize that if a youth has five trusted adults in their life it can be the determining factor in their future success, building their confidence and resilience in the face of life's challenges. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Moncton helps dozens of local youth make those connections each year, matching children with volunteers who gain a different, equally important, sense of belonging in the community. Joline Cyr, Executive Director of Big Brother Big Sisters of Greater Moncton joins Jenna & Tosh in studio to talk about the programming she oversees, while volunteer Marc Pelletier shares his experience with matching and mentoring local youth.

Yes, you can keep your elbows up when you're reading with the kids, too! ???? This week on the podcast, Jenna & Tosh chat with Hilary Scroggie Glover (Senior Category Manager, Kids Books at Indigo) and Lindsay Gauthier (Customer Operations Manager, Indigo Kids, Consignment & Events at Chapters Dieppe) about the importance of supporting quality children's writing and what new Canadian titles you can find in the kids' section this Family Literacy Day.

Canadian KidLit on the shelves at Chapters Indigo for Family Literacy DayWhether or not you consider yourself a bibliophile, picking up a children's book and reading with a little can be a magical time. You create moments of connection, sharing laughs or quiet cuddles. You transport yourself for a few moments into another world, perhaps one created from fantasy or one that's simply a slice of life shared from another viewpoint. And within the short time it takes to read aloud, you've helped boost vocabulary, spark curiosity, and encourage learning with your child.

Each year, Canadians marks Family Literacy Day on January 27, a chance to remind ourselves the power of reading together, whether it's recipes, road signs, or amazingly well-written and illustrated kids' books! Hilary and Lindsay joins us to talk about some of the incredible Canadian titles on the children's book shelves right now, what goes into choosing which books land on the store shelves, and some of our favourite Canadian children's books to read and share.

Sometimes loss creates beautiful new traditions - ones that carry on legacy and create change. Lynn's Lights is a shinning example of this. Lynn Whalen spent her career at The Moncton Hospital, and when she died of ovarian cancer in 2021, her family and friends came together to create an endowment fund in her name, supporting the Obstetrics and Newborn Care Unit of The Moncton Hospital. To add to it each year, lights on the iconic Christmas Tree float from the Royale Greater Moncton Santa Claus Parade are sold to the public. Thousands of Canadian begin their parenting journey each year with the unexpected - a baby arriving early. Weeks, even months before their due date. Jenna and her family are part of that community; their twin boys were born two months early, after a life-saving surgery at 20 weeks. On this episode, she talks with Tosh about the importance of November 17 -- World Prematurity Day.

Stats Canada reports that premature births are on the rise in Canada, with more than 8% of infants (or roughly 32,000 babies) born in 2023 arriving before 37 weeks gestation. That's the highest rate of preemies being born in Canada in 50 years. Combine that with Canadian research showing a link between being born premature and giving birth prematurely (fathers can pass on risk factors as well as mothers) and prematurity is a topic everyone should be talking about.

Dawn's great-uncle, Hugh Wright, has one of many local men who joined the 26th Battalion in 1915, shipping overseas to serve in the First World War. Hugh was 19 when he left, returning to New Brunswick on his 24th birthday. We popped in for our final podcast episode of the season, chatting with O'Creek owner Patrice Daigle and Barker Street Eats owner Ashley Cormier. Tune in to learn more about their passions, how they each came to entrepreneurship, and how they operate together at 175 Barker Street in Moncton.

BONUS: Ashley shared some of her recipes to help you with summer meal planning - whether it's a quick dish to wow at a BBQ or potluck or just something fun to have for yourself, she's got you covered with her pineapple salsa & whipped feta cucumber salad! Find the details below.

The Jenna & Tosh Show is a co-production of Pickle Planet Moncton and The Podcast Hub, and is recorded & aired by Rogers TV New Brunswick. Watch for a return to weekly episodes in September.

Elevate your summer with Ashley's quick dishes that pack a punch of colour and flavour!

BARKER STREET EATS PINEAPPLE SALSA

1 pineapple, sliced in half. Carefully create a bowl with one side and dice up remaining pineapple in to small chunks.

2 red peppers, diced

1 large red onion, diced

1 lime, juiced

Fresh cilantro, fine chopped

Fresh mint, fine chopped

Pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients well and place into the hollowed out side of the pineapple to serve with nacho chips.

This salsa is great addition to any meal, too! Offer it as a side with grilled chicken, sprinkle it over planked salmon, make it the mix for fish tacos, or serve it like Ashely did for us with grilled shrimp on top! Bonus: it's a great make-ahead dish, so take a morning to make a large batch and colour up your whole week.

BARKER STREET EATS WHIPPED FETA DIP with CUCUMBER SALAD

This is another simple side or app that looks like you've slaved away but is an easy make-ahead treat for guests or yourself!

WHIPPED FETA

  • 2 cups Feta cheese, pulled apart into medium size chunks
  • 4 cups plain Greek yogurt
  • 3 tbsp avocado oil (or olive oil)

Blend in food processor until smooth. Careful not to over whip as it will be too runny. Place in fridge for 30 mins before serving.

CUCUMBER SALAD

  • 2 large English cucumbers, small diced
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh mint
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh dill
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh curly parsley
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • Pinch of black pepper

Mix together in a bowl. Let sit for 30 mins.

Spread whipped feta onto a plate. Top with cucumber salad. Enjoy with pita or naan bread.

ASHLEY'S PRO TIP: Keep the plate in the fridge, too! The coolness from it will keep your dip cool, too - a great way to elevate your serving without any tricky steps!

Be sure to let us know if you try these dishes this summer! And don't forget - when you don't feel like doing the prep, you can visit O'Creek Brewing & Barker Street Eats to be spoiled there!

That's a wrap on Season Six of the podcast, folks! We're planning a return to weekly episodes in September. Until then, you can find the full archive here on the site - nearly 300 episodes to keep you company! :) DYK: Our first episode was back in June 2018? We've grown a lot since then, but we think it's still a great listen!

Less than a decade ago, a group of nine cyclists set out with a goal - to bike 500 kilometres around New Brunswick and raise awareness and fund for cancer patients. In 2011, another group of cyclists began the Tour of Hope, with a similar goal. Today, these events have merged under the banner of the NB Ride Against Cancer, a joint fundraiser by the CHU Dumont Foundation and The Friends of the Moncton Hospital.

Cancer impacts the lives of every Canadian, directly or indirectly - with nearly two in five people expected to develop cancer during their lifetime. Money raised through the NB Ride Against Cancer will go towards the creation of a Cancer Support Program that will help people living with cancer, their caregivers, and their families.

Foundation leaders Gilles Allain and Katherine Robertson join Jenna & Tosh to talk about the 2024 ride (including the NEW Riverfront trail portion scheduled for June 15), the longterm goals of the event, and their vision for collaboration.

The push continues to raise enough money to build a trauma-informed early childhood learning centre at the Courage Centre (also known to many as the Beauséjour Family Crisis Resource Centre) in Shediac.

One simple way to help - sign up to take part in the 2024 Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women!

Kristal LeBlanc is the executive director of the centre, which includes various support services for those transitioning from violent situations - emergency housing, forensic medical exam space, drop-in mental health support, a children’s playroom that serves as a neutral space for visits or custody exchanges, and several justice facility dogs (two of whom joined us in studio for this recording). She shares about the growing need for the centre's services and the importance of creating a space specifically designed for children who are navigating life after trauma.

The annual Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women is a large part of the centre's funding mechanism, and everyone can help - either by participating in the walk/run or donating through someone who is. Most of New Brunswick will experience an afternoon total eclipse of the sun on Monday, April 8, 2024. The timing of this rare occurrence is causing lots of excitement - and some anxiousness.

Parents want to make the most of the event while ensuring everyone's safety. To put your mind at ease, we asked New Brunswick Association of Optometrists' president Dr. Alexis Keeling to join us and answer questions such as:

  • How do I know if these solar eclipse glasses are actually certified?
  • Why isn't it safe to look at the eclipse directly?
  • Are pets in danger if they're outside during the eclipse?
  • How to enjoy this experience without going outside and looking at the sun?

Fore more information on eye safety, visit the Canadian Association of Optometrists' website. We've also included some Dr. Alexis Keeling's comments about the upcoming total solar eclipse below.

The Jenna & Tosh Show is a co-production of Pickle Planet Moncton and The Podcast Hub, and is recorded & aired by Rogers TV New Brunswick. Follow us for a new episodes each Monday!

"It's important to never look at the sun. It doesn't matter whether there's an eclipse or not. The sun is a powerful thing that can damage our eyes."

"Make sure that if you are going to look up at the sun that you're wearing certified eclipse glasses. These are not sunglasses. These are 200 times darker than sunglasses. You put them on and you look up and you find the sun because that's the only thing you're going to see."

"If you look at the sun and you're not wearing these, you can do permanent damage to your eyes and cause blindness for the rest of your life within seconds. And that's kind of the thing we need to keep people safe about. We don't want to scare anybody. We just want to make sure everybody is ready and well educated and has a really good time safely."

"It needs to have a certification number. ISO 1, 2, 3. 1, 2, 2. I've said it so many times, it sounds like my phone number! Some of them have a best before date, they should have a warning. They are made of aluminized polyester. There's two thick layers of that. So as long as you have these certification requirements, they should be good.

"As the president of the New Brunswick Association of Optometrists, we distributed 200 pairs to every optometrist in New Brunswick. Call your local optometrist, get in, get a pair for your family so that you know that everyone's eyes are safe."

"Kids have larger pupils, so that's another reason why our youngsters are at more risk of damage inside the eye. It would only take less seconds for them to have damage than someone older with a smaller pupil who would look up would be about more seconds than a child."

"When we look up at anything, we use an area the inside of our eye called the macula, and it's about the size of a pinpoint. And I'm sure you've heard of macular degeneration. It's a condition that happens to some people as they get older. So the macula is a very fine detailed central vision, and that's what we look at things with in detail. There are no pain receptors in the back of the eye. So damage happens there during an eclipse if someone's looking at it without protection and they don't know they're doing damage. And there's a period we call a latent period of about 24 hours to 48 hours where the person wakes up the next day and says, I can't see with my central part of vision. I can see your hair, but I can't see your face because the macula has been damaged and we don't know what the prognosis is. Prognosis means. We don't know if that's going to get better. We have to sit and wait and watch and see if their eye will get better with the possibility of them being permanently blind with their central vision. So that's the risk that we take when we don't wear these glasses.

"It is natural instinct to not look at the sun. You do not have to worry about your cats, your dogs or the birds in the wilderness. Animals are smarter than we are."

"There are so many other things to think about and look at during an eclipse. So it mimics nighttime and dusk. So you're going to look around, you're going to see the birds starting to nest in the trees. Things are going to get quiet. And then as the moon moves away and the sun comes back out from underneath it, things will wake up again. So it's a really neat, cool opportunity, not just about the sun and the eclipse, but about what's going on in the animal world around us."

"This eclipse in New Brunswick is going to happen around 3:30, ending around 5:30, and that's exactly the time those school bells ring. And people are let out of school and the kids are kind of left on their own to go to the bus stop and walk home from the bus stop. And with the curiosity and all this talk about the eclipse, there was that risk that our young, vulnerable kids could look up and have the damage done. So that's why the decision was made to let them have that afternoon to go home and be with their parents or their babysitters or at a daycare so that they're supervised and they're safe."

"It's not a quick thing that happens. It is over a few hours. Totality - where it's completely dark, like night - is not very long, probably about 10 minutes before it starts to slide over the other side. But in completion it's about a two hour event.

"What if it's cloudy? So we may not need these glasses. We're all going to be inside experiencing this from our TVs. There's been a device that was actually developed by a New Brunswick, retired physicist, and it's a weather balloon that goes up with cameras. So make sure to tune in as well online. Don't just spend all your time outside."

Each year, we try to do something to highlight local businesses, especially during the holiday shopping season. This year, the dream was to create an event that brought digital creators together to network while also showcasing local establishments and offering a pre-holiday boost to their bottom line.

We tapped social media content specialists, foodies, photographers, and enthusiastic entrepreneurs with a variety of online platforms and presence. Follower counts weren’t the criteria; engagement and enthusiasm were the conditions to be invited.

And did we choose right! The energy from these two dozen creators was more than we’d hoped and the whirlwind six hours raced by. Each business we visited was profiled in stories by the Content Crawl Crew, who were welcomed with samples, homemade cookies, freshly staged stores, and so much love from the business community.

The love poured both ways, with friends and followers engaging with our stories and sharing their own shopping plans to visit local - some as soon as the next day.

Huge thanks to the Chamber of Commerce Greater Moncton, Downtown Moncton Centre-Ville Inc, and Destination Moncton Dieppe for joining as sponsor partners, covering the cost of the bus transportation and pizzas and apps from Hub City Foodie, Jason Gallant (who also worked up the itinerary and connected with the businesses to prep them for our arrival!).

Tune in to hear from DCMI Executive Director Patrick Richard about how his organization works to support businesses year-round, and for a snapshot tour of the crawl with Jenna & Tosh!

Cheers to the amazing businesses who welcomed us for this first #leveraginglocalgma tour!

For the museum's 50th anniversary, staff brought back highlights from some of the most beloved exhibits over the last five decades - including Pablo Picasso's Lamp and Cherries (which first visited in the 1970s) and Albertosaurus sarcophagus, aka Albert, a mold of a skeleton that was a visitor in the early 1980s. Hear about these special guests and other temporary exhibits on display with Sophie Auffrey, Heritage Officer, & Lawren Campbell, Heritage and Culture Coordinator.

Moncton is one of Canada's fastest growing communities - and the boom in population means new services and networks are needed for mothers and fathers starting their journey into pregnancy and parenthood. When Pickle Planet began in 2015, online searches for Moncton+Doula or Moncton+pelvic health came up basically empty. Now, we're seeing more and more maternal health services provided locally - but still not enough to meet the demand. One new offering is the Perinatal Wellbeing Network, a dream of Sarah Hardy Walsh & Jade Medeiros. It aims to bring together service providers in the preconception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum space to create a network that offers collaborative options for professional networking and development, as well as a resource for the community at large. Sarah joins Jenna & Tosh to share some insight on the challenges and opportunities available in the prenatal and perinatal space in Southeastern New Brunswick.

Summer is here & it's time to relax! We're taking a break from weekly episodes until September (though watch for some bonus material!) but we're leaving you with some fun ideas for drinks and eats for your summer party plans. Hub City Foodies' Jason Gallant & Eric Flanagan join us poolside (thanks to Serenity Pools & Landscaping) with some quick ideas for making mouthwatering dishes and libations.

Jason has been on the show before during our Summer Staycation series, sharing his love for local food & drink. We love watching his passion spread on social (he's got a cool 30K follower on the ol' TikTok)! Eric is a newbie to the show but certainly not to the local restaurant scene. He's been involved in just about every place you might have visited, most recently at LOLI cafe & lounge. Reach out if you need some backyard party magic of your own this summer!

Compassion. That's the word that best encompasses the feeling that emanates from Marc Belliveau and his team at Harvest House Atlantic. For more than 25 years, Harvest House has been a haven for those struggling to find housing, to stay sober, and to access critical mental health services.

In 2022, that meant serving 156,000 meals. Moving 103 people into transitional housing, affordable house, and free-market rentals. Helping 85 people find shelter with friends and family, many returning to home communities outside the GMA. Standing alongside 17 people starting an addiction recovery program. And so much more.

Listen as Marc describes the work done at Harvest House, how they're shifting to better serve the community, and reminds us that unhoused certainly doesn't equal unworthy.

It’s a slow process to bring about real change, change steeped in understanding and built on trust. The Riverview Youth Network is doing just that. They are a newly formed group, bringing together youth, youth-focused organizations, and caring adults who want to truly shift the community’s mindset.

High school students Ella Webster and Rebecca Thomas officially launched the Network recently; you can see their speeches here. We followed up with Network members Heather Stordy and Ross Smith to delve into the role of the Parent Engagement Subcommittee and highlight two surveys the Network is currently running.

If you're a parent & open to sharing thoughts on your relationship with your child & your community, take a few minutes to fill this out: Riverview Youth Network Parental Involvement Survey

If you're a tween/teen in Riverview, share your thoughts on what activities you'd like to have available there: Riverview Youth Interests Survey

We continue our discussion around women in New Brunswick politics with Tammy Rampersaud, former Town of Riverview councillor, and Melody Land, current Village of Hillsborough councillor.

Elsie Wayne became Saint John’s first female mayor in 1983. It was 2016 when Moncton first elected a female mayor, Dawn Arnold. Fredericton elected its first female mayor, Kate Rogers, in 2021.

Momentum is shifting when it comes to women running and holding elected offices in New Brunswick, but much work remains to break down stereotypes and create municipal structures that are more reflective of the province’s diversity.

Beausejour Family Resource and Crisis Center counting on fundraiser to create trauma-informed child care centre for youth dealing with domestic violence & other distressing experiences

Kristal LeBlanc isn't one to wait for a solution. When she realizes a need exists, she works to fill it -- but she can't do it alone.

The executive director of the Beausejour Family Resource and Crisis Center already led the community to build a 19,000-square-foot building that offers apartments to women & children transitioning from violent situations. That's alongside the 24/7 drop-in mental health support, emergency housing, forensic medical exam room, and a children's playroom that serves as a neutral space for visits or custody exchanges.

Now, Kristal is hoping the community will step up -- and out -- to help build the first trauma-informed daycare in Atlantic Canada. The centre's major annual fundraiser is the Run for Women (by the LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart program). All money raised for the centre this year will go towards turning a portion of the existing facility into an early childhood education centre focused on children who have encountered trauma.

Tune in as Kristal explains how this idea came about, how rare it is in North America, and how many people she needs to sign up for this year's race to make it happen! (Spoiler: The number is 1500 people; we've joined, have you? When we chatted with Kristal she only needed 500 more. Let's hit that goal, New Brunswick!)

Disclosure: Tosh is the past MC for the Moncton run & Jenna has received her registration in exchange for race promotion in 2020 & 2021. We both believe in the Centre and the invaluable services it provides to our community. All opinions are our own.

Dr. Berger is the Chair of the Board of Directors of Eastgate Academy, a non-religious private school that will open this fall, with Grades 5 & 6, expanding to high school and possibly elementary in the future. Listen now to learn what went into creating Eastgate Academy, the educational model it will follow, and more!

This story will give you goosebumps. It's a tale that weaves together family, history, and serendipity into a journey that captures your imagination and likely educates as well.

Ivana Fogarty is a middle school teacher in Riverview - and recently added author to her resume. Ivana worked with her mother, Alica Frühwaldová, to write the story of Alica's parents, Edith Mittelmann & Oskar Berger.

The Love I Lost chronicles Edith & Oskar's experiences as Jews living in Slovakia during the Second World War. The couple met just as the war began in 1939, lost their families to the death camps, and narrowly escaped themselves by living through the winter of 1944-1945 in a bunker built into the mountains around their village.

In working to tell their story, Ivana & her mother shared a journey of their own, filled with moments that one might call the universe intervening to ensure this book came to life to tell the stories of so many.

The book is available for purchase online, in both Slovak and English, via www.bux.sk.

What does it actually take to encourage more women to become politically involved? To keep women engaged and active in our positions of power?

How about a 'camp' that teaches you the ins & outs of running a campaign. A series of movie nights that share documentaries about strong, political women, sparking discussions around how those experiences relate to our community. A social media presence that works to build community across party lines.

That's the Femmocracy Now movement in a nutshell. This newly-formed group in the Greater Moncton Area is working to ensure more women become active in politics, particularly with a focus on the upcoming municipal elections in the spring. Spokeswoman Amélie Bryar joins Jenna & Tosh to talk about the group & its programs.
