By most accounts, today's guest is considered to be America's Writing Coach, Roy Peter Clark!

For more than three decades, Clark has taught writing at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists in St. Petersburg, Florida, considered among the most prominent such teaching institutions in the world. He graduated from Providence College with a degree in English and earned his PhD from Stony Brook University.

We discuss the current and future employability of writers, as well as many of his seminal works, like Writing Tools: 55 Essential Strategies for Every Writer. We talk about some of my favorite strategies from that book: cut big, then small, fear not the long sentence, vary paragraph length, and order words for emphasis. We also discuss his forthcoming book about writing college essays.

Writers don't want to miss this one!

Today's guest is both a lawyer and a true crime writer. Meet Doug Kari, the man who exposed The Berman Murders — the story of Barry Berman, heir to the Kahlua fortune, and his wife Louise — who went missing in 1986 in Saline Valley, a popular Mojave Desert draw for nudists and eccentrics.

Doug brings a lend of scholarly research and good old-fashioned storytelling to his writing. He believes in immersive investigation, which has led him to lay inside the grave of a murder victim to envision the carnage that befell them moments before death. He’s scoured remote corners of Death Valley and uncovered key clues that authorities ignored in a missing persons case. And he’s stood alongside Mexican migrant refugee children to understand the peril they face in squalid encampments.

Enjoy this discussion about true crime journalism and its seemingly endless public interest and popularity.

Recently I was on Instagram using Meta AI, which is better than ChatGPT 3.5 in my opinion. I tried to Google what the top ten questions about marriage were, but could not find what I was looking for. So I asked Meta AI and it gave me ten common questions about marriage that singles and engaged couples might have before tying the knot.

Enjoy my wife and I discussing candidly about our marriage and the institution in general. We talk about communication, conflict resolution, sex, finances, religious differences, age differences, and some stuff Jordan Peterson says. No, we're not his groupies. But we did attend his We Who Wrestle With God book tour in Nashville recently, so he's been in our conversations.

We also talk about our good friend, Melissa Llarena. Here's a link to her awesome podcast Unimaginable Wellness.

We end our discussion with a couple of articles about marriage from Harvard and Fortune.

Today's guest is Port Jefferson-based artist, Jennifer Hannaford.

Jennifer Hannaford was a forensic scientist for twenty-five years, and is now a contemporary artist. Her underwater series demonstrates a fantastically refreshing new talent – marrying superb technical drawing and painting skills, with her profound understanding of the human form.

In an effort to get in touch with her innate artistic side, Jennifer began her art career with a series of mug shots created entirely with her own finger prints. She recently expanded her subject matter and style to include the underwater series.

As a forensic scientist, Hannaford experienced some of the harsher realities of human nature. Her art allows her to explore beautiful moments of the living experience frozen in time on canvas; life, ascension, and balance. Using sensibilities that were born out of her professional training in forensic science, she understands how the body feels and reacts underwater. When we look at her representational work – we can easily relate it to our own life experiences.

Today's episode is with Lisha Lercari.

Lisha Lercari is from New York City. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Theory and a master’s degree in Music Education from the Manhattan School of Music. She also studied music in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, a French music teacher and conductor who taught many of the leading composers and musicians of the 20th century.

Lercari taught music for more than 30 years and for a majority of those years lead her non-profit Music and the Brain (MATB for short). This is a public school program inspired by neurological research linking music and cognitive development. MATB is the experience of what studies are telling us; when children receive sequential music instruction, it can impact their proficiency in language, reading, math and cognition. Nearly 300 schools across the world use the easy-to-teach curriculum to help children and adults understand and appreciate the language of music as well as read music and play the piano.

Here is a Ted Talk she gave a few years back posted on YouTube called How Music Empowers the Brain.

Today's conversation is with Wendy Goeldner Hermes. We discuss food addiction, the acting business (or the business of show, as Wendy puts it), as well as policies surrounding the pandemic for the past two years.

Wendy Goeldner Hermes began her acting career in 1988, after spending 4 years at DePaul University's Goodman School of Drama. After 3 years of soul-crushing auditions, for unscrupulous casting directors decades before the #MeToo movement, Wendy realized she loved the craft of acting but hated the business. Upon leaving "the business of show," she started a theater company with 8 other friends and fellow Chicago actors and directors called "The Griffin Theater." Wendy performed, ran lights, punched sound boards, and hung drywall.

After being transfixed about the inner workings of local politics, while trying to help run a theater space, Wendy shifted her focus to politics by using her public speaking savvy to navigate local, political campaigns from such various, local offices as school board, Illinois State Reps, U.S. Reps and super pacs.

During the 22 months of the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic, Wendy has been taking copious notes, recording data, watching task force meetings and "saving the receipts" on the changing tone of our politics. Look out for Wendy's new book For Those That Want It: My story on how Covid policies, protocols, promises & propaganda propelled me to join the Democrat Diaspora, coming to Amazon this winter!

His books focus on the Puerto Rican "diasporica": living in in-betweeness. Today's episode is a great conversation I had with Goduar Siafu about Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist. We do go quite into depth about this book, so if you haven't read it, but always wanted to, you might want to do that before listening. If you've read it before, you just might want to reread it after this episode.

Goduar is a business man. He owns a store called Healing Nature in Port Jefferson, NY, where he provides healing alkaline herbs from all over the world. You can visit this store and learn how to heal your body naturally with medicinal plants that have been on this earth for thousands of years. But after one conversation with him, you will realize he is a lot more than a store owner. He’s a man full of wisdom and insights on many aspects of life, both physical and spiritual.

The same scene shot in different places will end up being different scenes at the end of the day. Most of us are familiar with the idea of location scouts in the film industry. These mysterious individuals who hunt for good locations to shoot scenes. But I’m not sure many of us are familiar with the actual day-to-day job of it. I wanted to get an insider’s take on it. So here is my conversation with Malaika Johnson.

Season 4: Episode 2

Today we have a conversation with lead singer from the band Diolosa and the Boys. Joshua Diolosa is a singer/songwriter and musician, but he’s also an actor and writer and currently working on a screenplay. So I thought he’d be the perfect guest to sort of walk us through how you tell a story through song, as he’s able to directly compare it to other forms of writing.

If you want to contact Joshua or learn more about his work, you can follow the links below:

Season 3: Episode 9

Hi everyone out there! I hope this podcast finds you in good health. In light of the coronavirus pandemic we’re all living through right now, I’ve decided to dedicate Season 3 to all the kids and parents at home with each other, looking for things and activities to do.

Though I try to keep everything clean, language-wise, normally the show is not exclusive to children. I often put a disclaimer at the front of any show I think has content that might not be suitable for kids under twelve. But you parents don’t have to worry about that for Season 3. Every episode for this season will be completely appropriate for kids of any age.

So I’ll be posting an episode every day for twenty days.

And I am excited because we're going through some works of the very famous Danish fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen.

If you’ve never heard of Hans Christian Andersen, you’re probably familiar with some movies that are based on stories he wrote. The most recent one would be Frozen, which was based off his story “The Snow Queen.”

He also wrote a fairytale called “The Little Mermaid,” which I’m sure you’re all familiar with as well.

Hans Christian Anderson was born in Denmark and lived from 1805 to 1875. He was good friends with another famous writer of his time by the name of Charles Dickens. He wrote many things, but he’s most famous and remembered for his fairytales.

I hope you enjoy the show!

If you do happen to write a story based on the prompt and would like the chance for it to be read on the show, I’d love to check it out. You can email it to storykingpodcast@gmail.com. Just include your name and where you’re from and which prompt your story is based off of.

Season 2: Episode 10

So what I decided to do for this last episode of Season 2 is dig through my little notebook of story ideas. Find three of them and use them as writing prompts to write three different stories, in the same way I did on the two episodes I had my sons on.

I put myself on a ten-minute timer for each prompt, but honestly, just like the snooze button in the morning, I had to press that re-start button a few times. So each story took roughly an hour to write. Not bad. But I don’t want to give any false impressions of my abilities.

At some point, hopefully next year, I plan on compiling all these quick writing prompt stories into a collection I’ll be marketing towards children, ages 8-13 I think. I say that just so you know these tales aren’t meant to be “serious literary fiction.” They’re short, they’re silly, often parabolic, sometimes not, but hopefully always entertaining.

And as always, if you, yourself, have written a story you’d like me to read on the show, or if you have a writing prompt for me to write a story, please email: storykingpodcast@gmail.com. If I like it, I just might use it. Try to keep your story between 1-3 thousand words. Again, that’s storykingpodcast@gmail.com.

Season 2: Episode 9

So today is the first installment of writing advice for the podcast. I’m calling these episodes Story King Tips. And the first topic we’re dealing with will be methods for writing longer stories. I’ll be going over three in particular: Interweaving storylines, multiple perspectives and then we’ll talk a little bit about the use of flashbacks.

But why talk about any of this in the first place? Perhaps, you’re already a novelist and you don’t struggle with writing long-form fiction. In which case, this episode may not be for you. But if you’re like me, you might need some help.

I’m primarily a short story and novella writer. I can write up 20,000 words comfortably, but beyond that, it starts falling apart for me. I can’t keep the story together. I get bored with it.

And I hate fluff. I want my stories to have the least amount of erroneous information. I don’t want needless scenes. And generally, I’m always able to tell my stories in a relatively short time span. For me, five thousand words is already too long for a short story. I write them sometimes, but I usually feel like I’ve done something wrong. Like I’m being long-winded or something.

I’m much more comfortable keeping my fiction short.

So writing a full-fledged novel has been a dream, but a challenge for me.

So I’ve been thinking about different ways of writing longer stories based on things I’ve read and movies I’ve seen. So we’re going to discuss them today.

Enjoy the show!

Season 2: Episode 7

Today we dive into the second of our three-part series of The Grimm's Fairy Tales!

As I mentioned last time, The Grimm’s Fairy Tales are some of the most famous stories in the world. First published in Germany in 1812 and written by two brothers, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, and the original title for the work was “Children’s and Household Tales.”

The two stories we’re reading from the collection today are “Hansel and Gretel” and then “Rapunzel.”

I decided to keep the age disclaimer in the front of this episode, because these fairy tales can sometimes be a bit more brutal to hear and read than the cartoon versions we might’ve seen. My five-year-old was fine with it, but that’s an individual parental decision. Some kids might be more sensitive than others, so I always want to make sure I give fair warning, and then the parent can decide for themselves. And just as a side note, I personally enjoy these stories as an adult and find them fascinating and important to the world’s canon of literature, so I don’t look at them as simply old children’s stories, but rather tales to be read and studied by readers and writers alike.

Season 2. Episode 6

Today we take a break from our Grimm Fairy Tales series to review the nominations for this year's 92nd Academy Awards, which will air next Sunday, February 9, at 8 PM EST.

I went ahead and watched every single film we’re going to talk about today with the exception of Pain and Glory with Antonio Banderas, so my thoughts on Best Actor will not reflect his performance, because I didn’t see it.

But what I’m going to do is tell you what I think of each film, and then let you know which movie I think should win, and which one I think will actually win.

There will be some spoilers, but not too many. I’m not breaking any of these films down scene by scene or doing any kind of critical analysis. That said, there will be some spoilers here and there. Nothing major. I’ll keep it light.

Season 2: Episode 5

Today we dive into the first of our three-part series of The Grimm's Fairy Tales!

The Grimm’s Fairy Tales are some of the most famous stories in the world. They were first published in Germany in 1812. They were written by two brothers, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, and the original title for the work was “Children’s and Household Tales.”

The first story we’re reading today is “Little Red Riding Hood,” also known as “Little Red Cap,” (doesn’t have the same ring to it, I know), and the second is “Snow-White and Rose Red.” Now just a disclaimer, this is not the same Snow White story that Disney based their movie from. That one is also a Grimm’s tale, but this one’s different. So if you’re wondering why there’s no queen or seven dwarfs, that would be why.

Season 2: Episode 2

Today we read two short stories by Franz Kafka

Franz Kafka was a german-speaking Ashkenazi Jew from Prague. He lived from 1883 to 1924. He was only 40 when he died. His most famous novella, “The Metamorphosis,” is about a protagonist named Gregor Samsa, who wakes up one morning and discovers he’s been transformed into a large cockroach of some sort. You may have heard the term “kafkaesque,” which is used to describe stories that employ similar magical realism techniques that Kafka used. I’m a big fan of his, so I wanted to read a couple of his shorter lesser known works.

The first story we’re reading today is called, “A Country Doctor,” and the second is called “The Bucket Rider.”

Season 1: Episode 10

O. Henry was the pen name used for William Sydney Porter. He was an American short story writer who lived from 1862 to 1910. He’s noted for his surprise and twist endings. You may come across the term from time to time, an “O. Henry ending.” That’s what that means. That there was some twist or surprise at the end. The one we’re reading today is called "The Cop and the Anthem."

Season 1: Episode 9

So I’m reading two short stories today, because they’re flash fiction pieces, which means they’re extra short. I think both of these are under a thousand words each, though I didn’t do a word count. The first story I’m reading is called “Bad News” and the second is called “The Funnel Horn.” And both of these are in Deborah Ghedini's collection Twilight Tales, which is available on Amazon, along with her other books.

Season 1: Episode 8

Happy Halloween!

Poe is more famous for his poetry than his prose, but today we’re reading, arguably his most famous work, “The Raven,” as well as “The Black Cat.” Now the latter is a short story, but “The Raven” is actually a poem. I chose to read it on the show because it’s a narrative poem, and so even though it rhymes, it does tell a story.

A lot of his work is considered scary, or at least creepy. And these two are no exception. So there’s your disclaimer, if you’re not up for scary today (though it is Halloween this week, so why wouldn't you be?).

Besides being known for his play The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde also wrote a number of short stories. “The Happy Prince” is probably the most famous one. It was first published in 1888 in a collection called The Happy Prince and other stories, and that’s the one we’re reading today. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Season 1: Episode 6

Eddie Newton has had several short stories published and has won the Robert L. Fish Memorial award for Best First Mystery Short Story. He has a political thriller available on Amazon called American Herstory, and his forthcoming novel Horrorfrost is being published this winter and will also be available both digitally and in print on Amazon. He and myself both contributed stories to an apocalyptic anthology published in 2018 called Enter the Aftermath. It’s a collection of end-of-the-world stories, as you may have guessed. And normally, we’re used to massive destruction with scorched skies and blackened seas and land laid waste. But Eddie Newton’s story has such a unique take on an apocalyptic scenario that I had to share it on the show.

You may know today's story by the movie starring Brad Pitt. It's a very famous story by a very famous American author. We are of course talking about the magical realism piece "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" by literary legend F. Scott Fitzgerald!

If you've written a story and would like the chance for it to be read on the show, please email it to storykingpodcast@gmail.com

Keep it clean and under 3000 words. I prefer speculative fiction, but will appreciate a good story in any genre.

Today's episode features short story "Between the Lines" by contemporary author José Antonio Cotrina, translated from the Spanish by James Stevens-Arce.

José Antonio Cotrina is an award winning Spanish sci-fi/fantasy author and has published a number of stories and books throughout recent years that are available on both Amazon and his own website: cotrina.net

And I’m happy to announce that he has a North American release of The Cycle of the Red Moon trilolgy coming out soon. That was a bestseller young adult trilogy in Spain. Kate LeBarbera’s English translation is being published by Dark Horse. The first volume The Harvest of Samhein will be available in book stores on May 26, 2020. There’s an article from Paste Magazine that includes the first two chapters. So be sure to check that out.
