In this episode of Dealership Fixit, we go round 2 with Shaun Raines from Hired Guns to expand our AI Hackathon conversation from Digital Dealer 2023 to create a mini campaign for the 2024 Harley-Davidson Street Glide launch.

It was fun going through Shaun’s 60-minute master class of using ChatGPT, MidJourney and Gamma to build a story, blog and headlines prompts to build a strategy.
We first used ChatGPT to get some ideas going over where we should start and how it should sound. I covered some points from this zapier article: https://zapier.com/blog/train-chatgpt-to-write-like-you/
We got some prompts and a working model for how we can move into creating some images with MidJourney. We had to play with the prompts and choose from some different variations but it looked great in the end!
Finally we moved over to Gamma and provided it with all the content and material we had chosen to use. The program, in seconds, populated a fantastic looking landing page with CTA’s and big colored buttons.
We loaded our new graphics into it and was able to “massage” it into place that turned out awesome. Make sure to check out the link!

In this episode, catch up with Shaun Raines from Dealer Superhero and Jacob Berry’s recap of the 2023 Digital Dealer Expo and the AI Hackathon project we worked on during the event.
The AI Hackathon, imagined by Brent Wees, was to create an entire marketing campaign for a 2024 vehicle launch.
There were 10 teams working on the project and it was timed with a strict set of requirements.
Our team was the only team to come up with a fictitious car “The Homer” from The Simpsons show while the other teams used an existing Toyota or Ford model to launch their 2024 program.
We used a variety of tools working and interchanging from one to the other, here is a list of ones we used or wanted to used:
We had so much fun and it was fun to work with all sorts of people to create this project in a short period of time. We all learned something and came away with a broader range of skills on how we can use some of these tools at the dealerships.
Not just in marketing but can be used in sales, service, parts, inventory, business, ideas, concepts and anything else that you can think of.
Stay tuned for our next round with Shaun Raines, a Dealer Superhero that’s always helping find solutions to dealers problems.

In today's episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Fran O'Hagan, President and CEO of Pied Piper, a mystery shopping organization that focuses on customer interactions at Powersports dealerships.
Fran brings a wealth of experience in dealership operations, having worked in the automotive and powersports industries, as well as being an avid motorcycle buyer. He is well-versed in how dealerships should interact with digital customers for sales and service.
During our conversation, we discussed the survey questions, how they are scored, and why it is important for dealerships to incorporate them into their customer outreach. We also talked about how dealerships of different sizes and with varying levels of resources can use this information to improve their processes.
We then touched on the importance of mystery shopping your own store to assess the customer experience. Fran emphasized how a poorly scored survey can highlight areas of improvement in your process, serving as a "burglar alarm" of sorts.
As we rely more on technology to automate workflows, it is important to ensure that it is working as intended. Pied Piper can provide valuable insights into the customer experience, but it is up to the dealership to make the necessary changes.

How’s your used inventory looking these days? Gone are the “Pay retail, sell for more” trade or acquisition strategy.
We sit down with Mike Murray the VP of Sales for National Powersports Auction or NPA and outline what the used motorcycle & powersports market looks like for dealerships.
Managing their current inventory is getting tougher, especially if you still have units that were purchased at the all-time high values and are still trying to “retail out of them”. It may be time to cut them loose and reinvest that into something else that can sell quicker.
We also talk about tools available and using data to make some better decisions on turning your inventory regardless of the reconditioning, parts availability, or time spent retail-ready. Does your dealer have a schedule to review bikes and have a plan when they reach a certain age?
Time for a change? The retail environment has changed this year, customers have turned back into price shoppers as they look for the deals and try to get the best possible value from their trade. Does your desk manager tell customers “they don't take in that kind of trade”?
Overall, NPA has been a staple in powersports for not only selling your unwanted, over-aged, or non-brand vehicles but also is a great resource for acquiring motorcycles, ATVs, utv’s, and marine products to supplement your used-inventory mix.

In this episode of Dealership Fixit, we sit down with Justin Quinn from DX1 to discuss all things Dealer Management System (DMS). The DMS is a complex software with various components that require careful management.
During this discussion, we explore the benefits of a cloud-based solution, which allows for easy mobility and management of different dealership aspects, even at events or promotions outside the dealership. It is natural to wonder if a user needs to be a "computer guy" to use DMS options effectively. However, learning the software's functionality is key to managing multiple departments, eliminating the need for a separate resident expert.
We also talk about the pros and cons of OEM integration and how it makes dealer managers and operators feel about big brother directly accessing their sales data, service repair orders, and parts transactions. Lastly, we discuss the possibility of ecommerce capabilities, which can significantly improve convenience for customers and increase revenue for dealerships.

On this episode of the Dealership Fixit, we talk to Tim Yarborough, the National Admissions Representative for Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI).
As a graduate of an automotive trade school (Wyoming Technical Institute & East Valley Institute), I get to talk about what it looks like in 2023 for the young aspiring technician starting on this journey to be a trained mechanic.
We start off with learning Tim’s background, which included sales, F&I in automotive and powersports dealers and General Manager at a Harley dealer before finding his home for the last 20+ years with Universal Technical Institute in their Motorcycle Mechanics Institute.
A school known for churning out thousands upon thousands of trained technicians, many of which are still working at dealerships today.
We go over what the ideal candidate for joining the school would look like, what to expect, and what some of the training curriculum would look like. We also dive into the many different OEMs that support the school with donation bikes, ATVs, side-by-sides, watercraft, and marine vehicles to help learn on. Did you know that after 14 months, these techs are walking out of there with an associate's degree?
Diving into what day one in the workforce would look like. Typically a year and a half in of schooling, student debt, financed tools and their toolbox, they relocate to work at a new shop. Scary for some. What should dealers expect when onboarding these new techs and putting them into a mentorship with a more experienced tech or shop foreman.
Continued schooling is also a big factor! The industry and the products are getting so advanced, the OEM’s are pushing the limits, the techs need to learn how to fix it and get some further education. MMI has got your back on that too.
Overall, I harken back to my own time going to a technical school, picking out my courses, talking to dealers, and ultimately working as a certified master technician for over 7 years. It set my course and put me in the workforce within a year. Unlike many college programs that are double and triple the cost depending on the degree, most don't end up using it anyway.
Learn a trade, skills stay with you for life. Thanks again to Tim at MMI for the great conversation, we hope you find some value in this podcast.

On this episode of the Dealership Fixit, we interview our Guest, Tad Kilgore, Co-Founder & Creator of both Traffic Log Pro (TLP) & Dealership Performance 360 (DP360), 2 CRM’s still in use today with 100’s of powersports dealerships.
Subscribe YouTube: https://youtube.com/@dealershipfixit
We talk through the history of how and why Tad, and his twin brother Tod, build and developed their own “traffic log” in the early 200’s while working for the powersports group RideNow.
After that success, he was approached by Dealerspike to build their own CRM called DP360. He was able to configure this new one with everything they learned from TLP and advance it to a whole another level.
Now, Tad is currently working with Ready2Rid, a newer company looking to make a splash in powersports with their wonderful marketing program tying both worlds together.
We discuss various topics revolving around the CRM, such as best ways to use it, what steps dealers can use to maximize efforts and future advancements on the horizon.
The Customer Relationship Management tool should be the nucleus of the sales process for any dealership and if used properly, can make a huge difference in efficiency and make more sales.

He Entered into marketing from humble SEO (Search Engine Optimization) beginnings with a couple of companies but realized that Paid Ads is the clear winner.
We know how an agency or great media buyer can use Google ads to help dealers: Increase Visibility, Get More customers to see your products and services. We Target locally in direct marketing areas and we Know Your Audience's interest and patterns.
Conversion Tracking By default, Google Ads only tracks clicks and impressions. As an operator, you need to have a conversation and ask what is their Definition of a conversion? Is it a Lead or Is It A Click and Page View?
Negative Keywords Help To Eliminate Waste. Negative keywords help not show your ads to users that Google thinks might be similar. Mike recalls when he was running campaigns for Ford Dealerships, the song “Tom Ford by Jay-Z” was popular and had to negate that from users wasting ad dollars.
He also talks about excluding Times of the Day and Geographic areas from the targeting so it is only confined to a specific area and targets the best customers.

On this episode of the Dealership Fixit; Jacob is discussing 5 ways that you can draw a parallel to your online inventory the same way you would create an online dating profile.
Shoppers browse your inventory the same way singles browse dating apps or sites.
It’s not a hard comparison when you think about it. All of the same ingredients are there.
You have to put up some sexy photos, multiple if possible.
Need your correct Year, Make, Model & Mileage, this would be a name and age.
You need to write a good description, or “bio” for your potential suitors to get to know you better
And lastly, most listings let you put in your type or segment of vehicle, these are like your interests on your profile.
Have some fun with this one!

There are lots of different programs out in a short amount of time. We look at the various ways a AI tool can help supplement a dealership staff and their responsibilities.
From customer service and online chat to the sales or desking process for writing up a deal.
Marketing programs will help content writing, social media, graphic creation, and more when utilized properly
Major unit inventory management and ordering the correct mix of vehicles that sell well and can make a good profit.
Parts applications and a labor install guide for every make and model you might carry.
Operators trying to squeeze the last little bit out of the percentage out of every deal to help hit that next revenue goal.
Service technicians and writers can use it to better facilitate a customer's concerns and help diagnose the problem quicker and ensure better satisfaction.

Pied Piper ranks Indian Dealers as #1 when it comes to their Internet Lead responses, How does this affect how your store process responds to mystery shopping?
Tucker goes DTC (direct to consumer) and some industry heavyweights feel like its now competing with the dealers they are distributing it for. Can this be a good thing for both Dealers and Tucker?
Interest Rates Raise Again, Jerome Powell, chairman of the Fed announced another raising of another 25 basis points. How will this make it tougher to get banks to buy in for powersports loans?

This episode is tagged as Explicit because I talk about (wait for it) ... HICKEYS!
I probably just lost most/all of my dealership business-only minded listener audience! Haha. But, I thought this stupid kid story was so fitting to go into a new year where we are constantly being told what new thing we need to worry about. I had been thinking I wanted to share this story for the New Year 2023 and then was certain I would after the house deal fell thru mid month. But, I got busy again and today out of the blue the friend that I mentioned who gave me to "to do list" for the pool party (haha love to my old friend Heather) reached out today to talk about her Dad's health. Her Dad is into his twilight years, going through the things many of them do with health & mind and feeling the feelings because sometimes there's nothing we can do to help. But, we can spend the time we can with them, being present in the moment instead of thinking about what we are losing during that precious time.
Enjoy what you're doing. Enjoy your friends. Enjoy your family as best you can. Life is short and it'll serve you up plenty of "hickeys" - don't go over-worrying about them because as they say you'll waste 100% of the time for the ones that never come.
I hope you got at least a little chuckle from my stupid kid story :) Have a wonderful weekend friends.

How lucky am I? I saw this book that I knew I had to buy and read and when I messaged the author about coming on my little dealership podcast to talk about it, he said yes! Frank J. O'Connell, who before becoming an author of this book was in leadership at several titan companies you'd know the names of, including Indian Motorcycles. Frank is an avid motorcycle rider and enthusiast of 50 years and logs more miles each year than most legit motorcyclists that I know. Being an absolute top level corporate turnaround guy as well as a motorcycle guy, it was my honor to get a few minutes with him talking about where he sees the opportunity for dealerships to get a little better. Thanks for taking the time to listen.

With the help of some great employers to teach him the ropes and at least one great mentor, he has gone on through dealership management and now owner & operator of multiple stores in his native Texas region.
It's obvious that he is motivated through his Faith in God and shares some of that here. That Faith definitely helps center his motivation daily to show up and uplift and promote others to do their best. The end of day self check-in he mentions plus the epic daily "10 pennies" approach are amazing ways to gamify helping any of us to give & get our personal best on a consistent basis. I love it! I have never worked for him but I have been drawn to look and listen to his social media content. He has a great vibe as a leader to follow and that is why I asked him to come on and chat.
Lots of fun conversation in this hour. Phillip, I appreciate you taking the time Sir!

Jon (Pierre) Levesque of Ronnie's Cycle Sales of Bennington (Vermont) joined me for a chat about how their dealership has used Facebook groups as way of tapping into a customer base far beyond their local area. I really appreciate him being willing to share this secret for success - but as we all know it takes both knowledge AND action to make a recipe work. As mentioned I really see this as a tool for the dealership to help remove barriers for older riders/racers to reenter the dirtbike category in as safe an environment (mentally and physically) as possible. That means longer term, happier customers.

Last weekend I was on a rare sunny Oregon winter day bike ride the with my kids.
They’re currently 10 and 8 years old.
I got both of them started riding bikes pretty young so they’re both (surprisingly?) proficient.
I’m actually in awe about it when I ride with them.
While riding and thinking about how great they are doing - and of course my mind appreciating being in that moment as well as knowing any such experience could be my or our last - It occurred to me that each time we do it, it’s both practice and the performance. We are doing the thing that it took practice to learn at the best we’ve ever been able to do it (potentially) as well as (hopefully) we are refining a skill that we’ll be slightly better the next time we do it.
I’m sharing this with my connections on LinkedIn because I tried to tell the kids this and their response was pretty much “yeah, we know Dad” 😂
So my new tombstone quote for the day is:
“Do it like it’s both, practice and the performance.“ ~ Brian Croft
I hope this helps you BE in the moment and appreciate what you have accomplished as well as where you are headed. Enjoy it!
Thanks for listening!

Powersport Roundtable - Dec 9th - Part 5 - Kurt von Ahnen
For a man with so many irons in the fire at any given time - Kurt is surprisingly difficult to write a "who is" about!
While he is a published author of a motorcycle fixed ops (service department) efficiencies book, that is certainly not all. He was a corporate trainer for Ducati N.A. as well as Suzuki America, a certified speaker by the John Maxwell team, and daily runs his Mañana No Mas website that touches all things life including health, faith, business, racing, training and interviews. As it is for me, the more I get to know Kurt, the more I see he is like an onion with a firm awareness that there are an infinite amount of layers! Kurt is also the consummate connector of people and ideas. This Powersport Roundtable is the proof of that.

Powersport Roundtable - Dec 9th - Part 2 Joe Marcoux
With over 30 years of specialty retail experience, Joe Marcoux has managed, owned and sold retail fitness businesses. Since the sale of his last retail venture, Joe has played the roles of consultant and coach for high-ticket sales in the specialty fitness equipment and electric bicycle industries.
He is a published author and has created programs that have helped thousands of sales people in specialty retail stores all over North America, Europe and Asia.
Joe has been contracted to train, coach and help with integration for some of the world’s largest retailers to help them scale their business.
He has been invited to speak at annual sales meetings, trade shows and events.
Providing real life stories that are injected with humor, truth and memorable information, he inspires listeners to take action.
He's proud to be from Winnipeg, Canada.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Joe is the youngest of three siblings in a French-Canadian family.
At the age of 18, he became the manager of a specialty fitness equipment retail store while attending University.
At 20, he opened his first retail store.
At the age of 25, Joe decided to merge with another fitness retailer, becoming the 7th location in what would become a 38-store chain 18 months later.
The Most Important Lessons:
Ambition caught up to him in his early 30s and a devastating affair tore his young family apart.
This was a defining moment in Joe’s business life.
Not because his wife and best friend had an affair, but because Joe realized that it was his ambition that had kept him away from his family. He did not heed his own advice and was away from what he loved most for too long, resulting in a failed relationship.
He co-parented his two daughters as a single dad for over 10 years.
“If the first man a girl loves is her father, I would like to set the bar extremely high.”
– Joe Marcoux
Today, Joe, along with his wife and LeadCycles business partner, Shauna, live in Winnipeg and are close to all five of their combined children. They also spend as much time as they can at their cottage on Lake of The Woods, Ontario, when they are not traveling and training clients.

Welcome back! Tonight I caught up with Austin Rothbard, CEO of Twisted Road to see what he up to, after a year has passed since last episode he was on. Why would normal powersports dealerships be interested in understanding motorcycle "sharing" when they want to sell more motorcycles? I think they should learn about it as, like most other tools available to you - they are also available to your competitors. This is why I asked Austin to speak with me about what he is doing, so powersports dealerships can understand how the landscape is changing and the options of an UBER-esque population begin to hit where we live. Know the change so you can be decisive in how you deal with that change. That's my opinion anyway. Austin Rothbard is Founder and CEO at Twisted Road, a motorcycle sharing community that empowers riders (possibly future owners) to try different motorcycles where they live or while traveling elsewhere in the US. Like an AirBnB in homes or TURO in automobiles, TwistedRoad.com allows rental of others bikes or you can be the owner who lets others use your motorcycle when you aren't. A potentially nice financial offset to your ownership cost when you were going to have it sitting still anyway... Check them out here: https://www.twistedroad.com/ Austin admits that not everyone wants someone else to ride their motorcycle - and he says that's ok! He says the majority of people he has surveyed would like to rent someone else's motorcycle while the minority of people are initially interested in letting some "stranger" ride theirs. Sounds like sound logic to me. LOL. We are all likely to fear an unknown like this... I know I did. Listeners to this podcast are likely to have in the past or do currently work in a powersports dealership, so the idea of getting (or letting) a potential buyer pay to try a motorcycle rather than just become an owner may have you feeling skeptical at first. Trust me, I am not an investor in his company and he has not paid me anything to speak on his behalf but I can tell you I see some reasons to be optimistic about this business model in relation to dealership business. NEW DEALER DEMO framework. Could dealers who shy away from doing motorcycle test rides be more confident in letting consumers demo their bikes? I'm talking a day or two day, get-to-know the bike. Do you think a consumer/renter would fall in love with a bike if given a bit more time to romance it? I think they might. Austin and Twisted Road seem to have a framework that may let a dealership put units or some into rental listing, get paid for the "demo" while being covered by their insurance and then offer up an offsetting amount of the rental incurred, if the renter buys the bike. Sounds like a less commitment/more attractive rent to own program. A customer would start to have some skin in the game that way. And as he mentioned, the owner gets to determine if the renter is actually qualified to be on that bike, baed on their riding experience. Parts and Accessory sales. According to Austin, a renter would already be licensed and insured or they wouldn't be able to rent from Twisted Road. If the owner (a dealer) chooses, they could have a certain availability of gear or they could obviously just be there to sell the renter gear, if needed. Could be an opportunity at a bit of a captive audience in front of your well stocked accessory walls. If the shift to sharing model becomes more reality as some studies say it will be - are you, as a selling dealer prepared to stay in play with that consumer? It's my belief that the vast majority of the dealers I have worked with in my 20 years in powersports, nationwide, may not be. Contact Austin at: austin@twistedroad.com

Jared joined me again to dig in on ideas for dealers to implement in this very confusing and continually evolving Coronavirus Pandemic.
He recently wrote the referenced article, here on his LinkedIn page: Jared's Article on LinkedIn
Jared says it will also be published on DealerNews this coming Monday, March 23, 2020.
If you haven't checked out DealerNews recently, do yourself a favor and hop over there. They were a true staple in my days at dealership (albeit in a paper version!)
Jared is NOT new to the ideas of dealerships needing to make big changes to remain relevant to how consumers expect to be able to transact with us. Now, we are seemingly in a true do or die situation in regards to that. Dealers who adapt right now will have a chance and those who are expecting to do what they've always done - I fear they will be gone before the next year goes by. I'm no seer, but I feel like this is one of those pivotal moments and I hope you'll use it to get creative and implement the new.

Jaye Sanders joined me tonight to discuss what a recruiter can do to help dealerships as well as individuals who work in the spaces of powersports, marine & RV. Now, with the current situation involving the #COVID19 #CoronaVirus there may be a certain lack of action by many of us to wait and see but Jaye says they haven't stopped helping people and businesses like you, connect the right talent to the right opportunity. In fact it might be the perfect time to utilize your skills for a business that needs some fresh people power perspective.
She offers a professional resume service and loves the process of helping individuals best showcase their talents in that way. Seems maybe a lot of us dealership folks are not so great at telling our story on a one pager! ;-) She can help!
She told me a bit more about what sets them apart from the other industry job boards and recruiters. She also tells me that if you aren't on LinkedIn, you should be as it is THE place where she finds a lot of the right connections. Just leave the drama behind! (That's me saying that! LOL)
Find Jaye's LinkedIn here: Jaye Sanders on LinkedIn
She says she typically has a discovery phone call with any potential candidates to see if there is a fit. If the fit is there, you're off to the races! If not, many times she can help you connect with a different recruiter.

Derek joined me this afternoon to discuss why communication is one of the most important things you need to put laser focus on, right now in the midst of this COVID-19 coronavirus thing we dealership people are trying to wrap our heads around. For starters, the consumer expectation has long since diverged from what dealerships (in general) are actually doing to communicate with the consumer, on the consumers' preferred terms. Consumers right now are scared and uncertain. If they reach out to a dealership, we need to be the rock for them to count on. Communication is key to be that rock!
If you have a vendor that provides any communication service - which ones are they? Are you paying for it? Are you using it? Are you using it effectively? This relates to all communication streams. I know at Trader, we provide phone call tracking but maybe more importantly right now, we provide texting, chat and even managed chat in dealer packages. I have dealers who have them and chose not to activate them because they didn't have the time to learn them or weren't interested in holding their staff accountable up to now. I think the events we are experiencing are the perfect time to hit the reset button on that mentality. Call your product/service reps, ask if you have any services like that that you aren't using. Have them get you and your staff trained on them. Have a plan with expectations so everyone in the store knows what the plan and goals are in all communications.
As Derek said, if your team is saying they need to get a customer into the store to move past a call or message communication - you may be dead in the water in this, the new world that we were just thrust into. A lot more in the chat today with Derek. He is always a great guest. I appreciate him coming on to share his experiences.
Please reach out to Derek if you are looking for training or just some perspective.

Parts & Accessory folks - Do you want to grow? Are you currently retaining all of your customers? Sadly, based on what I see when I visit or consult with many businesses, the answer is probably not a yes. So, if you are bleeding customers at any level, what is step one? I had Richard Kimes come on the dealership fiXit podcast to discuss just that.
Although he is no longer with Helmet House, Richard's most recent role was as their Chief Marketing Officer & Director of Training until late last year. You probably know Helmet House as your main distribution source for Shoei & HJC helmets as well as Cortech, Tourmaster and many more solid accessory lines. I know that when I was at dealerships I relied on my Helmet House rep as my main go-to for helmet training. That was some years ago and I know there are other distributors doing great things now but, for me they were the hot ticket.
Richard says that of ultimate importance is that there is belief at the GM/Ownership level, that more of the right training can help. Vital is what he calls Customer Handling Training where scenarios can be used to help staff understand consumer expectations, nuances of communication and (example) if you are better off to sell what you have on the shelf or skip the turn and order them something else instead. Interesting thing to have to decide on as standard operations have always been that roll what is on the floor. But when is that the wrong choice?
Having a background in advertising where he represented companies like Suzuki, General Motors and more seems to have helped Richard really understand what it takes to help move people toward the product or service you offer so please listen in for insights. I'm hoping these type of ideas can help dealerships like yours stop the bleeding, keep the "easy button" web sales away from your customers and set yourself up for a way to test and grow PG&A sales in the local market you serve.

I recently read Kurt von Ahnen's book "Service Writing in Black & White" written in 2007 and - I can tell you that if you have any interaction with a dealership service department - you need to get it and read it right away! In fact, Kurt has opened up to pre-order the follow up to the first book, which will be named "Service Writing in the Grey"
I wrote service as my very first job in this business and I can tell you that I did not have proper training so anything I got accomplished was with hard work and/or pure luck! LOL. Don't let your team LUCK AROUND, get them dialed in with proper training and turn on the cash machine that is your service department.

Welcome back! Here we are already a couple weeks into 2020! How did that happen?
Episode 53 and tonight we got to chat with Jason Gearld about his "baby" Phoenix Handlebars as well as some other stuff.
Jason started in the powersports biz working at a shop in rural Indiana where he says it all started for him in 1985, when his mom brought home the June copy of Dirt Bike magazine from the grocery store and his obsession began. He got his first dirt bike - a legit 1985 Honda XR80 which he says he would ride until it ran out of gas.
Excellent!
Check out the website here: https://www.phoenixhandlebars.com/
Jason is setting a great example for young, upwardly inclined powersports people, in my opinion.
He was hot for all things dirt bike and even with apprehension and uncertainty, picked up his life (a KX125 and an S-10 pickup) and moved to parts unknown to be or do more in the moto biz! I applaud him. He actually made step one and two and three, ultimately making it to the "moto-mecca" of SoCal where he resides today. He stepped up into the big show - which you can see in his resume - and now he is making products for guys like his younger self. In my opinion, he's a working class guy and if that is you, you should support him by spending you money with him. It doesn't happen overnight but if you put one foot in front of the other like Jason has, you can make moves, friends and a fun living in this business.
As mentioned in the episode, he also works with Alex at MotorcycleIndustryJobs.com in a business development role. He is not a recruiter, but he is a great guy to know as he is a connector by nature.

Did you know that I was inspired to do this podcast by an old friend? As we all know too well this time of year, sometimes inspiration falls flat before the perspiration part even gets started, if we haven't put ourselves around the right kind of people - people who will nudge us in the direction of completing the things we said we wanted to. My old buddy Craig Johnson from Wild Ass Seats is that guy. Ever since I've known him he has been a guy like that.
I talked with Craig this time one year ago as I was thinking that a podcast about dealership issues, including the real conversations that do occur or maybe more importantly need to occur in and around those dealerships. He said "YOU SHOULD!" to which I probably replied something like "Well I didn't mean that I should do it!" - but the words spoken cannot be taken back. Here I am with 6600 plus listens by folks like you and growing every month. Craig held me accountable much the same way I now do to folks responding to episodes or ideas for future episode topics when I say "maybe you and I should just discuss that on an episode" - Thanks Craig for setting an example. Those willing to speak out loud the ideas they are passionate about are the ones who will be given to opportunity to be held accountable. That's a great thing!
Craig's business at Wild Ass Seats is finding a way to make customers comfortable - but I realize even more now that he many times has to do that when they don't realize that being uncomfortable for a moment (introspection, analysis, planning to remedy) can lead to better things and more fulfillment in the long term.
I'm very fortunate to have friends like Craig and I'd encourage anyone who reads this to take this new year threshold to move yourself in the direction of friends who will make you better and you can commit the same to them. You didn't have to do it on New Year's Eve, New Years Day or anything like that - just make the change, do better, as soon as you know better.
(That's NOW, if you are keeping track!)

I couldn't wait to talk with her and get her take on how we are doing in this business, from a woman's perspective. This being my first chat with a woman in motorcycle business, on this podcast. She was a pleasure to talk with and I know you'll love the listen. Buckle up!
You know Teri has to be tough since she attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps before coming into the motorcycle biz. So why the hell would a dealership say he wouldn't sell her a sportbike?? Listen to the episode for that story.
So are we moving beyond that sort of stereotype in this male dominated place? She can elaborate on that...
I can tell you she has great ideas on how we can better move our minds and retail stores to better resonate with what consumers now expect from us and have a better opportunity at them spending their hard earned money in this home we call the powersports business.

Josh Barton with Trail Tech talks with me about Connected Riders & Trail Tech GPS products - Episode 50
Josh was willing to be my CLOSEST proximity guest to date - and doing a phone podcast interview form just across the river in Washington state!
If you understand that one of the most important things a company can do these days is offer a way to help a human CONNECT to other people, you'll see the value in their new product line - centered around Connected Riders!
I have been on offroad (adventure bike) rides that end in a fun time but could have been better if someone hadn't gotten lost and people had to double back to find them, etc. It makes for a long day when the fun of blazing trail with your pals isn't what occupies the majority of the time, but locating a lost pack member is - enter the Trail Tech Connected Rider GPS system.
From their website:
You may know Trail Tech as a company that designs and manufactures industry leading GPS systems, digital gauges, fan kits, high output stators, kickstands, and a variety of electrical accessories for motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, and UTVs. There is more to know about them and I would encourage you to click over and see their product offering at: WWW.TRAILTECH.NET
Trail Tech joined the Apex Product Group in 2017, to better serve their customers growing needs. Trail Tech continues to invent and develop cutting edge, quality products for the benefit of the Powersport community.

You know that snow sports must be a great hook when someone from Texas decides not just to get into them, but to get into the actual industry while living in Texas! My old buddy Aaron Remkus from the great state of Texas joined me today to elaborate on the who/what/where and WHY he got into Ski Biking and opened a company named Texas Ski Bikes.
Now, if you've ever been to Texas (or heard about it, seen pics, etc LOL) you know that Texas isn't known as any epicenter of snow or snow activities. In fact when I lived there, it was because it had a distinct LACK of snow 99% of the time. Having moved to Texas, from Upstate NY to remove myself from the snow that had wedged itself in between me and my motorcycle for many months at a time, I was glad it didn't have snow. Now, after hearing from this old friend about how I should check out a thing he called a "SKI BYK," I let him tell me about it...
Aaron has taken a bit of a self-appointed ambassadorship role for this Ski Bike sport he fell in love with, specifically the brand he says fits his bicycle and motorcycle riding style, to a tee. Enter... the SKI BYK.
He told me about his introduction to it when the idea of snow sports didn't quite marry up to the actual experience for him. Specifically, he said the activity of skiing or snowboarding sounded like a great escape from the heat of the south but skiing and snowboarding were not what he wanted to do on the snowy mountain, even after trying them. Other than riding a snowmobile or track equipped dirtbike on the mountain side, what option does a powersports person have to bring the "behind bars" experience to the mountain?
Yes, I am checking these rigs out. Funny because, until now, I figured my days of finding anything that could coax me back to a cold, snowy mountain were long behind me. Funny how a fresh take on a product category can do that.
Please check them out and thank you in advance for sharing this episode with anyone you know that should hear it!

Joining me today was Larry Little. You may not know who he is, but Larry is one of many people working behind the scenes to keep the doors of your dealership swinging. I think it's important for dealership folks to understand that they do have a network of people working on their behalf to help their business stay healthy.
How? Larry is with the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) - who works on things that those of us working IN the powersports retail side of the business don't always have time to do, like ... determine what motorcycle consumers want from us as well as what consumers that didn't know they want to be a motorcyclist; want. Yes, new MIC research has determined that there is a certain culture code that can be used to find people with a propensity to become motorcyclists. He admits this is a long term play but the insights in that are huge starting with you reading this, TODAY.
There is a lot more to come as I got Larry on to talk about this early in their roll out. Heck, they haven't even named the initiative yet. So please be sure you watch www.mic.org for updates on that.
What can you do today? Well, maybe re-examine how well you are tapping into your local area/regional culture of not just current customers - but WOULD-BE customers. Remember, we now know that as many as 8% of U.S. households have a motorcycle in their garage. Are you seeing that percentage of your local population in your store? Is your location sitting in the middle of a certain subset of the population that you don't include in your message? If so, they are probably having a hard time seeing themselves within your message and that could be setting a hurdle that you hadn't anticipated. As a realtor prepares a house for sale so that the vision is easier for the prospective buyer to see the result of their problem being solved - a "staged" house shown is a home that is ready to live in. If you have - as Larry mentions - just old white guys like him or I in your messaging, it may be harder for all the NON-old white guys to easily see themselves a part of it. I am not saying to pander, I'd never recommend that as it is immediately and obviously disingenuous and will work against you in the fastest way. What I am saying is that you need to look at who your current and prospective customers are and be sure your messaging speaks to them as a LIFEstyle they can see fitting into their LIFE.
This is a much deeper conversation but I'm honored that Larry took some time to share the scratched surface with me.
My call to action for all my listeners is to:
1) follow the MIC now and be informed about coming initiatives like the one mentioned above
2) email them your insights or feedback at: newriders@mic.org
3) look at your current messaging to your local population to see if it fits to them
Lastly, share this message and podcast episode. The podcast continues to grow and I'm so thankful to all of you who have shared it. It is a labor of love for me that I only do in my off work hours. I have spent no money promoting the podcast so it's a slow road and that is ok by me. I'm here for the long run.

Do you like technology? Of course you do! You are listening to a podcast. These pretty much didn't exist until technology allowed us to take books and such on the go, with iPods and iPhones etc. At one point there was no way to do such a thing with a wire or two to tether you to these grandchildren of Walkman we now use. Now, when you helmet up for a ride - you probably expect to easily access calls and play whatever music of podcast (like this one) that you are in the mood for. Enter bluetooth helmet communicators... They have come a long way since the early 2000's when I heard of but knew nothing about them, except that some old dudes on touring bikes wanted help installing them into their helmets and couldn't be more than a few bikes away from each other to use them!
Check out the episode as MUCH has changed - and will continue to do so.
Cardo Systems states this on their website:
"Our passion is to make your ride exceptional
We believe that riding a motorcycle shouldn’t mean you can’t enjoy the company of your friends. That's why we invented the Bluetooth motorcycle communications market back in 2004. We have been reinventing the market ever since. If you have the love for riding, we have the passion to make it truly exceptional!"
Jamie Cheek is the VP of Sales for Cardo Systems, based in Texas.
He is a legit moto and street riding dude and knows the tech side of things too.
If you didn't already know about Cardo getting the tip of the hat to put their system on riders and team at the Monster Energy Cup this year, go to their website and check out the story there. That sort of thing gets me pumped to be witnessing moto history be rewritten. Goosebump stuff! Interesting to see what comes next on that.

If you were in business and business seemed to be getting harder, would you quit or search for ways to be better?
No, it's not a trick question. Many businesses are in the midst of a major transformation right now and if you built a business that is a retail operation you probably have some trepidation about how you fit in not and ongoing. Powersports dealerships are retail outlets that focus on Motorcycle, ATV, UTV, Snowmobile and Personal Watercraft products and services. They have been around for long enough to see some hard times in the past but I'd contend they typically chalk up a softening of revenues to being "luxury goods" and "quick to the chopping block" by consumers versus staple goods, in tough times. I'm not even contending that isn't accurate and true. But, I will say that in the recession 2008-2011, I witnessed dealerships close down who seemingly just weren't ready or able to fight. And in some cases, they weren't ready to change.
Jeffrey P. McNulty agreed to come speak with me on this episode because I told him that I live and breathe powersports, more specifically I live and breathe to help the dealerships that sell powersports. I shared with him that I see a widening gap between the worst to best shops in what they are knowing and doing. I get that it is a bit of a bell curve as with many things but I hate to see good hard working people that are enthusiasts first, in powersports, get left behind without trying to provide them some extra insights from some folks that have been there/done that at the highest levels of retail. Are you ready to change and capitalize?
Please plan for a couple hours to listen to this entire episode and then you should also go get his book. It's impressive. Having grown up working in traditional retail before I entered the powersports retail business in 1998, I can tell you that the contents of the "manual" are certainly awesome. He didn't reward me in any way to say that. I bought two copies of the manual because I believe there is great value for you, my dealership audience. And, I will be giving 1 of the copies away to a podcast listener at no charge.

Natan Sanel, founder of National Powersports Distributors joined me tonight to discuss his thoughts on what is missing from the powersports business these days. Thankfully he is passionate enough about seeing it get healthier industry wide that he shared many insights with me that most business owners would probably prefer to lock up in a safe, than share with all their competitors!
Coming from a background in auto parts, Nate says he and his wife decided to get into the powersports business when 9/11 happened and the stock market shut down for several days. He planned to gain better control of his investments, doing it on a small scale from his own garage - a bike at a time. His plan was to buy and sell some used bikes. Fast forward some 19 years later, he sells 2500+ bikes per year from the current Concord, NH location and was Triumph's #1 Dealer in North America.
Some possibly surprising ideas ... He built his business on the e-bay concept where he knew the majority of his customers don't physically come to him.
He says at the core of his business are these 3 words: "Tell The Truth" and he and his staff refer back to them when making decisions daily.
On his website inside the prominent "Why Buy From Us?' link on the home page you'll find a great story about them including the following:

Dealerships, whether metric or v-twin focused are in a bit of a predicament. Those of us that are in the industry love this thing we do called powersports - riding a powered thing in a sporting way ;-) BUT we have been struggling despite our best efforts to keep our doors swinging with new customers. We can blame the parents of bubble wrapped kids, we can blame the electronics that kids get to play with but whatever the reason you feel is most legitimate, you have to know that there is a big issue on having the right number of next generation people to hand the powersports baton to in the coming years.
Enter STACYC... A company that built their first prototype to help get a proper size/weight powered bike for the owner Ryan Ragland's son to ride that wasn't as big and heavy as was currently available. Once there was interest from neighbors for this electric powered balance bike, Ryan moved forward to what is now known as the STACYC bike that is owned by Harley-Davidson but sold to metric dealers as SYACYC and Harley dealers as IRONe bikes. I have to say how impressed I am that H-D chose to do that. In traditional business models most manufacturers would have chosen to corner the market but Harley didn't do that.

Tonight I had my old friend from Houston, Texas on the podcast to discuss what he has been up to since we worked together (I with Scott USA and he was with Parts Unlimited). Larry Hughes has been into motorcycles his whole life and sharing that love with every human that sees or comes into contact with him. A man of real integrity, Larry is a shining beacon of hope in life and business as the STACYC he now represents, appears to be for the future of powersports. He joined STACYC last year as Central U.S. Territory Manager and is pumped to tell us about it.
Please share this episode with all your friends in powersports as I firmly believe the STACYC products are an entry point to outsiders becoming powersports customers, like no other.
Thanks for coming on Larry!

Tristan Wright joined me from Melbourne, Australia to discuss how his path from uni (college) for engineering to "real life" work lead him to starting a company making custom cycling apparel. That took off and he built it into a solid 7 figure business that sold around the globe. He says that it didn't go as smoothly as a story book since balancing that and home life ended up costing him a marriage.
He says that one thing that he learned is that to build a business you need to be able to accept help from someone who has the experience to see what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong and help you adjust your sails to do more of the right stuff.
A lot of the conversations I have with small business dealership owners make what Tristan talked about resonate. Look for perspective from those who have done what you want to do. Put yourself in circles with those who are where you want to be in several years.
Consider getting a business coach. If you intend to scale the highest peaks of business and feel like a full fledged business sherpa is the type you'd like, please check him out here: https://www.evolvetogrow.com.au/
Please share this podcast with someone at dealership that you know. That dealership person may be a lot person, front counter help, sales person, manager, or owner. People need different perspective at different times in their journey.

Randy joined me for the 3rd of 3 sessions discussing some intricate points that he, as a California dealership, is accountable for to state and federal regulatory agencies. This is a session that may have some of you who are not in a role where these compliance items are part of your day to day, let's say... it may have you sort of "glaze over!" But, if you aspire to be in a management role at a dealership or you are today, listen up - the level of onerousness that compliance has come to in some states (and likely many more/all over time) is high. If you plan to play in the sell fun powersports or RV business you'll want to bookmark the 3 Randy Felice episodes for a later reflection.
As mentioned at least once, Randy is not a lawyer. I also, am not a lawyer. We are having this discussion to show how immense the expectations are on you as a dealership, thru the perspective of a motorcycle dealership (Randy's) operating in California.
Randy has graciously offered up his email to answer questions directly about any of these topics:

Randy Felice joins me as guest on this, his second episode of three to discuss why it's important for dealership owners and managers to ask for help. He describes his experiences starting in powersports and realizing he had a lack of actual management experience. He reached outside the industry and started his journey then in was probably a standard corporate America style management course. It started him on a journey where he hired a business coach and learned the importance of evaluating the state of a business as it is now, them creating the vision for where you want to take it. Sounds pretty logical but as you know, once you set foot inside a business all the best ideas can go right out the window without a plan and accountability in the way of, as Randy said a few times "how much and by when"
He describes several places a typical dealership has business relationships with that can help get a dealership staff trained, including any manufacturers you are partnered with, insurance companies, OSHA and more. Pretty surprising, actually.
There are some books he recommends as well as podcasts you may want to check out (wink wink) and he gives some examples from his years of involvement in a major powersports 20 group - including his feelings about the Spader Group and his Facilitator, Mark Sheffield.
Please share this podcast with everyone who should hear it.

How does a mission statement set the bar in your organization? You may want to have a look at yours and determine if it fits to get your vision implemented on a daily basis, to your customers, by your staff.
It was a pleasure tonight, getting the chance to talk shop with Randy Felice. His shop, A&S Motorcycles in Roseville, California is one I have been to although it was probably almost 10 years ago. Randy has many more years experience in this motorcycle business we love and I'm glad he let me pick his brain on the Dealership fiXit podcast. He is Dealer Principal of A&S Motorcycles, making him a BMW, Ducati and Triumph motorcycle factory authorized representative in his market. Interesting to me is that he is a DP that chooses to sit daily in the Sales Manager role within his organization. Why would he do that? It seems a less likely occurrence in the stores I have interacted with over the years. It would seem, he sees that role as a very important one in an owner's ability to engage with his customers, in a time when customer engagement is how you can aspire to providing the ultimate buying experience.
We discuss in depth some checklists he has fine tuned (and continues to fine tune) as a way of minimizing likelihood of system breakdown and the fallout it can have when consumers expectations are at levels like never before. Randy says he is happy to share the checklists with dealers who are interested. Please email me at dealershipfixit@gmail.com to get you in contact.

Hey there - I am still alive! Seasonality got me... In the heat of a summer season in the powersports business, I put the podcast on the rear most burner for a month. Sorry about that! But, as we know we experience some pretty strong seasonality in this business. It's September. My kids are just now back in school. The days are getting (noticeably) shorter. What changes are you making in your business? How are you preparing for Fall & Winter 2019? The year is 75% over according to the calendar so I wanted to get the pulse from you listeners on how your 2019 is looking and what you are planning for last quarter of 2019 and into 2020? (insert your 20/20 vision reference here! Lol).
Thanks for missing me. I got a couple messages asking where the heck I was. I appreciate that. It means this little podcast and the thoughts we have in it mean something to some other people. I take that seriously. The podcast has now been moved from rear burner to front! And the bigger and better front burner - you know what I'm talking about!
Please share this podcast and please share with me, some ideas for future sessions or people you'd like to hear from.
More coming soon! Thanks for listening!

You may not know the DFW (Dallas/Ft Worth, Texas) area but it's a massively populated metro area surrounded by some sprawling suburbs, full of powersports riding Texans. Bobby Whitney has come to powersports within the last year, from 20 years in high line, high volume, luxury automotive business working with Sewell Auto Group. This is where Bobby learned Mr Sewell's "Customer For Life" philosophy (as the book by that same name expands upon).
"Customers For Life" book by Carl Sewell: https://www.amazon.com/Customers-Life-One-Time-Lifetime-Customer/dp/0385504454/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Customer+for+Life&qid=1564187839&s=gateway&sr=8-2
What you should be able to takeaway from learning about Bobby and his plans are that the days of powersports dealership staff that "sorta" care just enough to prop up a stool at a parts counter at fading fast. Bobby seems to have crystalized what I have preached for years, which is that each interaction deserves 1000% effort. I know 1000% isn't a thing but I'm being dramatic to illustrate the point that the 100% effort of old days is long gone. Time to reset that effort meter.
Progressive Powersports is currently 2 locations in Granbury, Texas & Arlington, Texas but sounds like some more spots are coming soon. Keep an eye on them and please share this with anyone you know that needs to hear it.

I got a few minutes of Tony Tarell's time to chat about his wizard-like products he provides to dealers to sell thru their F&I departments. Have you ever gone to a merchant and left, feeling underwhelmed? Yeah, I bet you have. Most likely today or within the last 24 hours you have had that experience. I just wanted to have a quick episode as a reminder that you, fellow Dealership fiXit, are empowered to be sure you are the Hugger! I like to imagine that each interaction with a fellow human being is an opportunity to embrace them (figuratively) and solve a problem they have arrived at your doorstep about. Are you front line in parts department, service department, sales, management or a dealership owner? Guess what? It's on all of you to be sure you are giving out hugs today. And tomorrow. And every time you unlock the doors, turn on the lights and invite the public into your building. I haven't ever and won't ever say it's easy to do this. But, if it was easy it wouldn't be so special. We all go around and interact with other businesses daily and see the gamut of examples in customer experience (good and bad). Please take this as your reminder that you need to think on, watch/listen and act on making your business the example in your corner of the world, in exceptional customer experience. Hug your customers! (figuratively - unless you have real hug waivers signed!)
Thanks for listening and thanks for making right now, today the time you level up in this area.

Motorcycle sharing is rentals.
Check them out here: https://www.twistedroad.com/
Austin admits that not everyone wants someone else to ride their motorcycle - and he says that's ok!
Demo framework. Could dealers who shy away from doing motorcycle test rides be more confident in letting consumers demo their bikes? I'm talking a day or two day, get-to-know the bike. Do you think a consumer/renter would fall in love with a bike if given a bit more time to romance it? I think they might. Austin and Twisted Road seem to have a framework that may let a dealership put a unit or some into rental listing, get paid for the "demo" while being covered by their insurance and then offer up an offsetting amount of the rental incurred, if the renter buys the bike.
The understanding of this process as I've written above is just my opinion. I don't work for Twisted Road so please form your own opinion by checking them out. Here is the FAQ page for answers to some FAQs: https://www.twistedroad.com/faq

PG&A folks - check this out! Today we got to have a great pod-versation with Phil Ammendolia, President & CEO of LS2 Helmets U.S.
If you don't know this line, you owe it to your bottom line to check them out. Seeing as it's been many years since I have been working INSIDE a powersports parts department, I'm sure Phil will forgive me for not knowing anything about his brand, but as the old saying goes - Do your best. When you know better, do better! The videos Phil has on the LS2 YouTube page are a great resource to gain insights on helmet "why's" like...
Why should a helmet flex?
What is the newest technology in helmets?
Why is a COG (cost of goods), turns and healthy margin important for a dealership?
Why are both MAP (minimum advertised pricing) and MRP (Minimum Retail Price) policies important to help dealers?
Why is it important to stock the right products in your parts departments?
Phil has a lot of the answers to questions you may not have known you should have asked. It was very interesting to me and I hope there is value for you here.
Please check them out and reach out to LS2 for more info.
LS2 America YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/user/LS2HelmetsUS/videos
LS2 U.S. website here: https://ls2helmets.us/
Phil recently posted an article on LinkedIn that may be of interest in discussing how dealers want to see the manufacturers new products asking "have shows outlived their usefulness" here in the US? That article is here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/have-motorcycle-trade-shows-us-outlived-usefulness-phil-ammendolia/

Mike Murray, the VP of Sales forNational Powersport Auctions (NPA) is my guest in this episode.
He and his team have been a big part of keeping an impressive dealer-first service culture while growing their team, in recent years.
Having worked with and for Mike in the past, I'm a big fan of his passion as well as and NPA.
If you have not been to the experience that is the largest powersports auction in the world and at the level NPA does it... you owe it to yourself to go to your closest location and see it live.
It's my firm belief that any dealers who want to be able to most effectively buy and sell units at minimal exposure and for maximum profit need to be savvy in the use of NPA tools and services.
Those tools include their NPA Value Guide but also a whole lot more these days.

Scott Wright of IMS Products is no stranger to dealerships. Sure, he has been manufacturing and selling powersports products to distributors, dealers and customers for the last 25 years. But, did you know that he worked at a dealership? It's been a few years but he has a great grasp on dealership life and he has some ideas of how any dealer can better control their own destiny by stocking more of the right products.
I agree wholeheartedly with Scott in that a dealer cannot stock everything but should be sure to include some items like theirs in that subset of can-do accessories of dirtbikes, ATVS, dual-sports and adventure bikes are units you sell. IMS pegs and Shift levers were items I did believe in, stock and sell thru at dealerships I managed parts of. I'd encourage you to check out the link below where Scott nerds out on technical stuff for some footpeg products why and how, in a 2017 interview.

John Slater from SRP, maker of Slater Skins and Slater Shields joined me tonight for a talk about branding opportunities.
He's been doing this a long time and has had some great history of getting outside sponsors to step up and brand up motocross and freestyle mx riders machines with his products that add much needed volume to the available space of these motocross bikes.
If you haven't seen what I'm talking about, see the links below for images. These things are impressive. I might have to buy a Yamaha! ;-)
Most recent example I saw was this 2019 Yamaha YZ-F labelled up with Hog Technologies, Dinoliners.com, EBR Performance and Tucker Powersports logos.
Check out the Slater Skins on a Yamaha YZ250F here: https://www.facebook.com/799423086793758/photos/a.799667560102644/2155555291180524/?type=3&theater
https://www.facebook.com/799423086793758/photos/a.799667560102644/2155555261180527/?type=3&theater
Check out the Slater Shield on a Yamaha YZ250F here: https://www.facebook.com/799423086793758/photos/a.799667560102644/2155555361180517/?type=3&theater
I'd encourage any shop with racers sponsored, to consider the front Slater Shield for any off-road race bike and the full Slater Skins & Shield for bikes with fitment available (2014-current YZ250F & 450F at time of this publication, 2019). John says he is working on more bike brand fitments as we speak.
Maybe you can think of ways to use it promotionally and get your logos MUCH MORE visible in your area and differentiate yourself from all your competitors.
Remember, this is the sort of products that Motocross Action Magazine printed back in the 1990's that would be the way our sport would continue to land and retain big outside sponsors. Serious businesses expect big branding ROI. Maybe it's time to take their advice.

Brooke Farquhar owns a shop named Motoworks in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It's different from any shop I've been a part of in that it's a membership only shop where Brooke can invest all of this time and energy into being the exact level of advocate that each and every customer needs to stay engaged in this activity we love so much - motorcycling. Motoworks Facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/motoworksva/ This business is more of a labor of love for Brooke and it shows. When he describes what he gets to do every day it's obvious. This is a dream of his and it goes far beyond the normal parameters I'm used to in discussions of ROI calculations, at typical businesses. He has learned from some selfless leaders and coaches like Bob Henig of Bob's BMW Motorcycles and I think he's on the right track to keep that cycle of positive contribution going for many generations to come. I'm impressed that he he chosen to serve the customers seemingly most likely to fall thru the cracks at a powersports store of lesser focus and become an "I tried motorcycling, but it wasn't for me" story. I just read and wanted to share the article plus my thoughts on the Powersports Business article entitled, "Harley-Davidson Dealerships are number 1 at Replying to Website Customers" study, in which they include a Pied Piper PSI study (article link included below as well).
Imagine, you are a regular consumer, ready to move forward in the purchase of a new widget, product X that costs several thousand bucks. This is a product that you don NOT need but believe it will help make you lead a happier, more fulfilling life. (not that any product but powersports products do this anyway. LOL) So, you email the area location selling product X including your name and phone and ask a question to help you slim your choices and sped up acquisition of said product.
If that dealer doesn't reply to you in an hour, what do you do?
What about if they don't reply within 24 hours?
Now, what about if they NEVER reply to your inquiry?
This is an inquiry that you sent right to their preferred virtual doorstep... The place that anyone would understand to be the pinnacle of what the shop is about and how it could be benchmarked to perform for you in any/all future interactions.
This is at minimum, bad first impression at more likely a prohibitive problem if we want to continue selling products that people do not need to own. This process needs to be thoroughly examined and dialed in to a much better level of time sensitivity.
How have dealers of the brand(s) you represent performed in 2019 vs 2018? What parts of this study are surprising?
Please let me know you thoughts on this. I will be sharing it on my personal/Dealership fiXit page LinkedIn page, here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bc315/
If you prefer Facebook or Instagram check us out there.

I've heard for many years that powersports dealerships are many years behind automotive dealerships in regards to their advertising, branding and data utilization around those investments. I found Michael Annable on Linkedin this year and started following him since he shares a lot of insights there, on where dealerships in the automotive vertical are making mistakes and possibly wasting money. I knew I was harassing one of the right people when I saw he was co-founder of Showroom Logic his currently Chief Product Officer at ROI Detective.
I Linkedin messaged him and asked if he would like to come on the dealership fiXit podcast, after hours one day, to share some of that story.
He agreed!

"Stop wasting your time posting to Facebook!"
Wow.
Yes - Joe Iribarren got my attention with that statement too! Thankfully, he was ready to back it up with real world insights.
I'll start out by saying that this episode will only be an initial insight into this topic but you'll want to hear what Joe Iribarren has to say on how you are using social media now versus some changes you may want to make to use the medium for better engagement and visibility. I am hoping to get him back on for a more in depth as soon as possible. Maybe send me questions for him so I can ask him the sort of questions you want more info on.

I welcome Derek Sanders of DS1 Consulting back for another visit, this time about the F&I department of your powersports dealership.
Do you have an F&I dept in your dealership?
Since I haven't spent any time in that role, I had Derek come chat about how every dealer can be a better, more profitable finance and insurance department plus better satisfy your customers at the same time. Seem counter intuitive? It isn't!
I welcome your feedback on this or any Dealership fiXit episode. These are just the opinions and observations of myself and my guests, from working in and into dealerships.
Please share this episode with anyone you know that needs to hear it or would maybe like to be a guest on a future episode.

What is your personal expectation on merchandising at your retail dealership? Specifically, online... If you haven't thought about exactly where you set the bar for yourself and your staff on merchandising each and every area of your operation, you're losing. Consumers expect you to be the tip of the spear. Heck, they're supposed to hand you money for the product, right? As always, feel free to give me your feedback or better yet email me and come on a future podcast (virtually) and let's talk it out. My old friend and special guest on Dealership fiXit podcast, Craig Johnson has many years worth of insights that he was willing to come on and share just a few of. He's worked in powersports dealerships, he opened his own KTM motorcycle dealership in Minnesota, sold cars in auto dealerships and now runs a company that sells motorcycle products thru distributors Tucker Powersports and Parts Unlimited to customers thru dealerships like yours. Aside from his product knowledge, he knows how to win customers by instead calling them friends, literally. It's been a buzz word for years but I've formed my own theory about how to keep it simple. It's as simple as taking your CX expectations to the level that tl rival or beat your dealership owner's own.
